Using a molecular marker that allows the differentiation of two strains of the solitary endoparasitoid wasp Venturia canescens, the study investigated the influence of host mass and the time interval between ovipositions on the survival and development of larvae from both the first and second laid eggs in superparasitised Ephestia kuehniella. As the time interval between ovipositions increased both overall and superparasitism success decreased, however, time between, and order of, ovipositions had little effect on other developmental parameters. Adult size increased with host mass under both parasitism and superparasitism, while host mortality decreased with host mass under superparasitism. In addition, wasps emerging from superparasitised hosts were larger than wasps from parasitised hosts. The results confirm that for V. canescens on the host E. kuehniella both self- and conspecific-superparasitism will be an adaptive strategy when hosts are the limiting factor.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Polyembryonic wasps provide dramatic examples of intra-specific developmental conflict. In these parasitoids, each egg proliferates into a clonal lineage of genetically identical larvae. If more than one egg is laid in a host (superparasitism), individuals of different clones may compete for food resources.
2. In the polyembryonic encyrtid Copidosoma koehleri , one larva per clone can differentiate into a sterile soldier. It is shown that soldiers are always females, and that they attack intra-specific competitors.
3. Research hypotheses were that (a) clones that develop in superparasitised hosts suffer heavier mortality than clones that develop in singly parasitised hosts, and (b) female clones cause higher mortality to their competitors than male clones, hence larval survival is lower in superparasitised hosts that contain females than in male-only broods.
4. The potential frequency of superparasitism in C. koehleri was manipulated by varying parasitoid–host ratios and exposure durations.
5. As parasitoid densities and exposure durations increased, the frequency of superparasitism rose, brood sizes increased, but the number of hosts that completed development was reduced. The number of offspring per parasitoid female decreased with increasing parasitoid–host ratios. Offspring size and longevity were inversely correlated with brood size. As superparasitism rates increased, fewer all-male broods were produced. Male–female broods were female-biased, suggesting selective killing of males by female soldiers. All-female broods were significantly smaller than all-male broods at high parasitoid densities only, possibly reflecting aggression among soldiers of competing clones.

Abstract.  1. Superparasitism occurs in Cotesia glomerata (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a gregarious endoparasitoid of Pieris spp. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). The response of P. brassicae larvae to superparasitism and the consequences for the parasitoid were examined in order to elucidate the ecological significance of this behaviour.
2. Field surveys of a Swiss population revealed that C. glomerata brood sizes from P. brassicae larvae ranged from three to 158, and both the female ratio and the body weight of emergent wasps correlated negatively with brood size. In the laboratory, single oviposition on P. brassicae larvae did not produce any brood size larger than 62, but brood size increased with superparasitism.
3. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that both naive and experienced female wasps were willing to attack hosts that had been newly parasitised by themselves or conspecifics. Superparasitism reduced survivorship but increased food consumption and weight growth in P. brassicae larvae. Superparasitism lengthened parasitoid development and prolonged the feeding period of host larvae.
4. Despite a trade-off between maximising brood size and optimising the fitness of individual offspring, two or three ovipositions on P. brassicae larvae resulted in a greater dry female mass than did a single oviposition on the host. Thus, superparasitism might be of adaptive significance under certain circumstances, especially when host density is low and unparasitised hosts are rare in a habitat.  相似文献

1. In solitary parasitoids, only one individual can complete development in a given host. Therefore, solitary parasitoids tend to prefer unparasitised hosts for oviposition, yet under high parasitoid densities, superparasitism is frequent and results in fierce competition for the host's limited resources. This may lead to selection for the best intra‐host competitors. 2. Increased intra‐host competitive ability may evolve under a high risk of superparasitism if this trait exhibits genetic variation, and if competitive differences among parasitoid genotypes are consistent across environments, e.g. different host genotypes. 3. These assumptions were addressed in the aphid parasitoid Lysiphlebus fabarum (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) and its main host, the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae (Scopoli) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Three parthenogenetic lines of L. fabarum were allowed to parasitise three aphid clones singly and in all pairwise combinations (superparasitism). The winning parasitoid in superparasitised aphids was determined by microsatellite analysis. 4. The proportions of singly parasitised aphids that were mummified were similar for the three parasitoid lines and did not differ significantly among host clones. 5. Under superparasitism, significant biases in favour of one parasitoid line were observed for some combinations, indicating that there is genetic variation for intra‐host competitive ability. However, the outcome of superparasitism was inconsistent across aphid clones and thus influenced significantly by the host clone in which parasitoids competed. 6. Overall, this study shows that the fitness of aphid parasitoids under superparasitism is determined by complex interactions with competitors as well as hosts, possibly hampering the evolution of improved intra‐host competitive ability.  相似文献

1.Superparasitism influences the fitness of female parasitoids and their progeny, and increasing time interval between oviposition bouts generally reduces survival probabilities of the second clutch. However, the timing of superparasitism may, under certain conditions, favour the second clutch. 2. This study investigated the effects of superparasitism time intervals on survival and fitness of both clutches, allowing the egg parasitoid Trichogramma euproctidis to parasitise previously parasitised Ephestia kuehniella host eggs at different time intervals. 3. In short intervals (0–1 h), a significant advantage was found for the second clutch over the first clutch (93.1% survival). In contrast, the second clutch was outcompeted by the first clutch in 17–19 h and 27–29 h intervals. Females deposited their eggs into larvae (intraspecific hyperparasitism) in a 39–41 h interval with a probability of survival of 57.1%. Females mostly refused to hyperparasitise pupae (~80% rejection at 124–126 h), and when they did, their progeny never survived. 4. Hyperparasitism significantly increased parasitoid mortality in both clutches from less than 20% (superparasitism only) to over 35%. 5. Except on newly laid eggs (0–1 h), superparasiting females were frequently observed attempting to stab immatures of all stages (from 36.4% to 89.4% of all ovipositions depending on treatment), but infanticide only appeared to succeed on larvae (39–41 h). 6. When the second clutch survived, emerging parasitoids were smaller than control individuals, probably due to resource depletion. 7. These results suggest that T. euproctidis females can detect that a host has been previously parasitised but they cannot perceive superparasitism time intervals.  相似文献

1. The reproductive fitness of a parasitoid depends on its mating and ovipositing success. Virgin haplodiploid females can reproduce, but produce only males, and may diminish fitness by producing more male offspring than required. Therefore, females must decide on whether to mate or oviposit first. 2. This study was conducted to assess the mating versus ovipositing decision and its impact on the reproductive fitness of Diaeretiella rapae (Hymenoptera: Aphididae), an endoparasitoid of the cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae). 3. When newly emerged females were given a choice between mating and ovipositing, about 62% of D. rapae females preferred to mate before ovipositing. Those females who oviposited before mating parasitised only 10% of the available aphids. After mating, females superparasitised their hosts with fertilised eggs, which resulted in a highly female‐biased sex ratio in the offspring. 4. Mating success was very high (91%) in the presence of hosts (cabbage aphid nymphs) compared with that in the absence of aphids. However, mating success was not influenced by the quality (size) of the hosts present in the mating arena, despite a parasitoid preference for larger hosts during oviposition. The time between pairing and mating was also shorter in the presence of host aphids. The mean number of aphids parasitised and the parasitism rate were significantly greater after mating.  相似文献

1. This study examined biological characteristics of sexual and asexual strains of the parasitoid wasp, Lysiphlebus fabarum (Marshall) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). 2. Strains were reared in different instar hosts (the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli) under identical environmental conditions (21 °C, 65–75% RH, and LD 16:8 h). 3. Results showed that the second instar of the aphid is the most suitable growth stage for both strains, as the wasps that emerged from the second instar hosts were larger, more fecund, and had larger egg size. Trade‐offs between the fitness components of the parasitoid were clearer when the parasitoids were reared in suboptimal instars. 4. According to the results, sexual females emerged around 1 day earlier and lived around 0.5 day less than asexual females. Also, sexual females emerged with a lower initial egg load, although these wasps tend to have larger eggs than asexual females. Asexual females may enjoy greater longevity and higher developmental plasticity which suggests a higher degree of synchronization with pest population dynamism. 5. The results suggest that sexual wasps, in contrast to asexual wasps, invest more in egg size than in egg load. This study suggests strain‐specific adaptations of L. fabarum to different instars of the black bean aphid by which the allocation of nutritional resources to various functions differs between strains. 6. Furthermore, differences in life history traits between strains can greatly influence the population dynamics of each strain, and hence their effectiveness in suppressing pest populations.  相似文献

Many parasitoids discriminate previously parasitised hosts from unparasitised ones to avoid mortality of offspring. Parasitoids that parasitise aggressive hosts such as lepidopteran larvae are known to attack hosts very quickly to avoid being attacked. However, little is known about host discrimination of such quick attacking parasitoids. We investigated host discrimination of Microplitis demolitor (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) a quick attacking parasitoid of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Results showed that ratios of female wasps that rejected the hosts after antennal examination did not differ between parasitised and unparasitised hosts, indicating that M. demolitor did not discriminate hosts by antennal examination. However, 95% of females that inserted ovipositor into unparasitised hosts actually laid eggs, whereas it was only 31% for parasitised hosts, indicating that females discriminated hosts by oviposition insertion. Analyzing video recordings revealed that the ovipositor exploration of the host took 0.3 s. Female wasps that had experienced high-host density of unparasitised hosts readily rejected parasitised hosts, while wasps with experience of low host availability of parasitised hosts tended to accept parasitised hosts. This suggests that host discrimination behaviour of M. demolitor is affected by previous experience of different host availability and host quality.

The foraging behavior ofVenturia canescens, a solitary endoparasitoid of lepidopteran larvae, was investigated in the laboratory. FemaleVenturia canescens with a larger number of mature eggs to lay were found to have higher levels of superparasitism (measured as numbers of eggs laid per parasitized host). Increased parasitoid density was found to result in reduced levels of superparasitism by host-deprived (i.e.,undepleted) wasps. Females which had been allowed access to hosts before the experiment (depleted wasps) laid fewer eggs per parasitized host than undepleted wasps, although there was no significant difference in the levels of superparasitism among the depletion periods of 1, 2, 5, and 7 h. It was also found that an egg which was encountered less than 15 min after oviposition was much less likely to be avoided than one which was encountered after more than 15 min had elapsed.  相似文献

In the parasitoid Venturia canescens Gravenhorst (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), asexual and sexual wasps coexist in the field in the Mediterranean basin, but only the asexual strain is present indoors. The sexual strain dominates outdoors despite the demographic costs associated with the production of males and mate location. The present study tests whether females of the sexual and asexual strains of V. canescens differ in flight characteristics in line with the differences of their preferred habitats and enquires whether these differences might contribute to the persistence of sexually reproducing individuals in the vicinity of asexual counterparts. The results show that sexual female wasps are smaller than their asexual counterparts. The size of wasps has a strong influence on flight parameters, with larger animals generally being better fliers. In wasps of approximately the same size, sexual wasps fly faster than their asexual counterparts under experimental laboratory conditions, in terms of both the average speed over the observation period as well as the longest single flight. Sexual wasps also perform fewer flights to cover the same distance. Sexual wasps have higher wing loading than asexual ones of the same size, which could have contributed to the observed differences in speed between individuals of both reproductive modes. There are no significant differences between the two reproductive modes in the parameters related to the distance traversed or the time spent in flight. This study shows clear differences in the flight behaviour of sexual and asexual V. canescens. Together with previous results, this finding suggests differential adaptations to their preferred habitats. These differences might ease the competition between modes of reproduction through niche and habitat differentiation and might help to explain their coexistence on a geographical scale.  相似文献

Adaptiveness of sex ratio control by the solitary parasitoid wasp Itoplectis naranyae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) in response to host size was studied, by examining whether differential effects of host size on the fitness of resulting wasps are to be found between males and females. The offspring sex ratio (male ratio) decreased with increasing host size. Larger hosts yielded larger wasps. Male larvae were less efficient in consuming larger hosts than female larvae. No significant interaction in development time was found between parasitoid sex and host size. Larger female wasps lived longer than smaller females, while longevity of male wasps did not increase with increasing wasp size. Smaller males were able to mate either with small or with large females, while larger males failed to mate with small females. Larger female wasps had a greater number of ovarioles and mature eggs at any one time than smaller females, although the number of eggs produced per host-feeding was not influenced by female wasps. Thus, the differential effect of host size on the fitness of males and females exists in I. naranyae. The basic assumption of the host-size model was therefore satisfied, demonstrating that sex ratio control by I. naranyae in response to host size is adaptive.  相似文献

In the solitary ectoparasitoid, Dinarmus basalis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), the occurrence of superparasitism according to the unparasitised host density, and the nature of the host(s) provided was investigated in laboratory studies. In this species superparasitism was observed whatever the experimental conditions used, but the degree of superparasitism depended on the density of its host, Bruchidius atrolineatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). Superparasitism was due to successive egg-laying phases on the same host. However, females were able to discriminate between unparasitised hosts and hosts parasitised from 8 h to 72 h beforehand by themselves or by conspecifics. There was no conclusive evidence that superparasitism in the presence of a host parasitised 30 min before was linked to an absence of host discrimination. Host discrimination in this species is achieved by host-quality markers. These are individual-specific markers since conspecific superparasitism rates were often higher than self superparasitism rates. One deterrent substance is emitted by the females during oviposition onto the egg or released by the 16 to 24 h-old egg itself. Another host-quality marker is associated with the presence of a larva on its host. On the other hand, host discrimination ability did not always imply avoidance of superparasitism. In D. basalis there exists a positive relationship between the survival probability of the second egg and the tendency to superparasitise, and superparasitism could therefore result in a significant fitness gain. Under our experimental conditions, D. basalis females exhibited a wide range of oviposition behavioural plasticity in relation to the parasitoid developmental stage, the type of superparasitism, and the encounter rate with unparasitised hosts.  相似文献

Abstract 1. When offered a choice, female diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) oviposited more eggs on plants with non‐parasitised conspecific larvae than on plants with parasitised larvae. 2. The leaf area consumed by parasitised larvae was significantly lower than that by non‐parasitised larvae. However, this quantitative difference in larval damage did not explain the female’s ability to discriminate between plants with parasitised and non‐parasitised larvae, as females showed an equal oviposition preference for plants infested by higher or lower densities of non‐parasitised larvae. 3. Pupal weight and duration of the larval stage of P. xylostella were independent of whether larvae were reared on plants that were previously infested by either non‐parasitised or parasitised larvae. 4. The larval parasitoid Cotesia vestalis did not distinguish between plants infested by non‐parasitised larvae and plants infested by larvae that had already been parasitised by conspecific wasps. 5. Based on these data, it can be concluded that the moth oviposition preference for plants infested by non‐parasitised conspecifics relative to plants infested by parasitised conspecifics was not explained by plant quality or by the attractiveness of plants towards wasps. It is hypothesised that one of the reasons for this preference is avoidance of plants where a relatively high risk of parasitism is expected due to the emergence of parasitoids from the parasitised host larvae.  相似文献

The solitary endoparasitoid Aenasius vexans Kerrich (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) is used for augmentative releases against the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus herreni Cox & Williams (Sternorrhyncha: Pseudococcidae), an important pest on cassava in South America. In light of the need for large numbers of high quality females, experiments were conducted on host stage suitability and sex allocation. In choice and no-choice experiments, individual female wasps were offered second and third instar, as well as adult, hosts. During the first five days after emergence, the wasps showed a steady increase in the number of hosts they successfully parasitised per day, but the respective secondary sex ratio for each instar remained constant. Parasitism was highest for third instar hosts in no-choice tests, while in choice tests parasitism was highest in both third instars and adults. The later the developmental stage of the host at oviposition, the faster the parasitoids developed and emerged, and for each host stage, the development time of males was shorter than for females. The sex ratio of the wasps emerging from hosts that were parasitised as second instars was strongly male-biased, while the apparently preferred later stages yielded significantly more females than males. Female and male A. vexans emerging from hosts parasitised at the third instar were significantly larger than for the other stages. This may explain the preference for the third instar as well as the female-biased sex ratio, as size is usually positively correlated with higher fitness, especially in females. The results suggest that third instar hosts are the most suitable for rearing high numbers of large females.  相似文献

  • 1 The fitness consequences of superparasitism for a solitary parasitoid depend on whether the host was first parasitized by itself (‘self-superparasitism’) or a different individual (‘conspecific superparasitism’). Self superparasitism is usually expected to be avoided.
  • 2 A.pandens females showed no difference in their probability of superparasitism between self-parasitized and conspecifically-parasitized hosts. The probability of superparasitism decreased as time from the laying of the first egg in a host increased, from about 0.29–0.46 at a time interval of 1 h to 0.10–0.14 at 72 h.
  • 3 The egg distribution of wasps foraging alone on a patch showed significant avoidance of superparasitism, but that of wasps foraging in the presence of conspecifics was not significantly different from a random distribution. This suggests that wasps switch from avoidance of superparasitism when alone to acceptance of all hosts when in a group.
  • 4 When wasps foraged in a group, the hosts had many more ovipositor puncture marks than when wasps foraged singly. This suggests that either hosts were attacked several times per encounter, or that the wasps' encounter rate with hosts was much higher when in a group. If the latter is true, it is possible that, although the egg distribution suggested a higher rate of superparasitism when wasps foraged in a group, the ratio of acceptances to contacts of parasitized hosts may in fact have been lower.

Summary When host quality varies, parasitoid wasps are expected to oviposit selectively in high-quality hosts. We tested the assumption underlying host-size models that, for solitary species of wasps, quality is based on host size. Using Ephedrus californicus, a solitary endoparasitoid of the pea aphid, we evaluated the influence of aphid size (= mass), age and defensive behaviours on host selection. Experienced parasitoid females were given a choice among three classes of 5-day-old apterous nymphs: small aphids that had been starved daily for 4 h (S4) and 6 h (S6) respectively, and large aphids permitted to feed (F) normally. Wasps attacked more, and laid more eggs in, small than large aphids (S6>S4>F). This rank-order for attack did not change when females could choose among aphids of the same size that differed in age; however, wasps oviposited in all attacked aphids with equal probability. Host size did not influence parasitoid attack rates when aphids were anaesthetized so that they could not escape or defend themselves. As predicted by host-size models, wasp size increased with host size (F>S4; S6), but large wasps required longer to complete development than their smaller counterparts (S4E. californicus reflects a trade-off between maximization of fitness gains per egg and the economics of search-time allocation. Because large aphids are more likely to escape parasitization, a wasp must balance her potential gain in fitness by ovipositinng in a high-quality (large) aphid against her potential cost in terms of lost opportunity time if the attack fails.  相似文献

Successful parasitism of a host partly depends on a female's assessment of its quality, including whether the host has already been parasitised or not. We conducted experiments to elucidate host discrimination by Dolichogenidea tasmanica (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). It is the most commonly collected parasitoid of light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). To assess the rate of superparasitism avoidance by D. tasmanica, female wasps were given choices between (1) unparasitised hosts versus freshly self-parasitised hosts, (2) unparasitised hosts versus hosts at 24 h post-self-parasitisation and (3) freshly self-parasitised hosts versus hosts freshly parasitised by a conspecific female. Results confirm that host discrimination occurs in D. tasmanica. Females avoid laying eggs in hosts that have been parasitised by themselves or conspecifics, even though the frequency of first encounter with either an unparasitised or a parasitised host was the same for all choices. Thus, it appears that females are not able to discriminate the host parasitisation status prior to contacting a host, but host acceptance is not random. Host discrimination is time-dependent, with greater avoidance of superparasitism after 24 h. The ability of female D. tasmanica to distinguish healthy from parasitised hosts suggests that it could be an effective biological control agent in regulation of host populations. It should also ensure production efficiency in parasitoid mass-rearing.  相似文献

The most favourable period for Dendrosoter protuberans development occurred when wasps were introduced 16 days after the beginning of Scolytus multistriatus development (the greatest number of emerged wasps per a single parasitoid female with a very positive sexual index and high percentage of parasitised elm bark beetle larvae). No significant differences were observed in parasitoid efficiency between the 11th and the 21st day. The most unfavourable period for elm bark beetle parasitisation was six days after the beginning of S. multistriatus development (a low reproduction of D. protuberans, a negative sexual index and a low number of destroyed S. multistriatus larvae). The reproduction of both the elm bark beetle and D. protuberans was greater in the first, than in the second generation. The developmental period of D. protuberans in the first generation was approximately two days longer than in the second generation. Furthermore, the development of females was 1-2 days longer than the development of males. D. protuberans developed most successfully on S. multistriatus (the most abundant parasitoid reproduction with the longest developmental period and a very positive sexual index that resulted in a high percentage of parasitised larvae) and then on S. ensifer, S. pygmaeus and Pteleobius kraatzi. On the other hand, S. scolytus larvae were the poorest host of all elm species - the reproduction of D. protuberans in this species was the scarcest with the shortest period of development and a negative sexual index, hence larval parasitisation was the lowest.  相似文献

Various physiological effects of Wolbachia infection have been reported in invertebrates, but the impact of this infection on behavior and the consequences of these behavioral modifications on fitness have rarely been studied. Here, we investigate the effect of Wolbachia infection on the estimation of host nutritive resource quality in a parasitoid wasp. We compare decision‐making in uninfected and Wolbachia‐infected strains of Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on patches containing either fresh or old host eggs. For both strains, fresh eggs were better hosts than older eggs, but the difference was smaller for the infected strain than for the uninfected strain. Oviposition behavior of uninfected wasps followed the predictions of optimal foraging theory. They behaved differently toward high‐ vs. low‐quality hosts, with more hosts visited and more ovipositions, fewer high‐quality hosts used for feeding or superparasitism, and a sex ratio that was more biased toward females in patches containing high‐quality hosts than in patches containing low‐quality ones. Uninfected wasps also displayed shorter acceptance and rejection times in high‐quality hosts than in hosts of lower quality. In contrast, infected wasps were less efficient in evaluating the nutritive quality of the host (fresh vs. old eggs) and had a reduced ability to discriminate between unparasitized and parasitized hosts. Furthermore, they needed more energy and therefore engaged in host feeding more often. This study highlights possible decision‐making manipulation by Wolbachia, and we discuss its consequences for Wolbachia fitness.  相似文献

1. Several hypotheses concerning modified dispersal behaviour in aphids parasitised by aphidiine wasps (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae) were tested in the laboratory. Behavioural changes may be host-mediated, parasitoid-mediated, or a by-product of trauma and pathology. 2. Mummification site varied with parasitoid species. Pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) parasitised by Aphidius ervi, Aphidius pisivorus, Monoctonus paulensis, and Praon pequodorum mummified near the aphids’ preferred feeding sites on bean plants, but those parasitised by Ephedrus californicus often died and mummified outside the colony, away from the plants. 3. Parasitism by E. californicus had a progressive effect on the behaviour of pea aphids. Approaching death, aphids lost motor control and frequently dropped off the host plant when disturbed. Dropped aphids were unable to return to the feeding site and mummified elsewhere. The proportion of aphids mummifying outside the colony increased with mummy density. 4. Mummification site was not influenced by the presence within the same colony of aphids parasitised by different species of aphidiine wasps. 5. The evidence does not support the hypothesis that mummification site selection in E. californicus is determined by a host- or a parasitoid-mediated change in aphid dispersal behaviour. Association-specific differences in the dynamics of larval development and growth between aphidiine species provide an equally valid and possibly more general explanation of mummification behaviour.  相似文献
