The impact of natural coccinellid larvalpredation on the balsam twig aphid was evaluated bysystematically removing coccinellid egg masses in a6–8 year-old balsam fir (Abies balsamea)Christmas tree plantation in southwesternQuebec. Among coccinellid species hunting on firfoliage during development of Mindarus abietinusfundatrices in May, the indigenous Anatis mali was by far the most abundant and themain one to oviposit on trees. Comparison of trees onwhich coccinellid larval predation was excluded withcontrol trees showed that A. mali had a markedimpact both during and after the phase of rapid M. abietinus population growth that followedfundatrix maturation. On trees where coccinellidlarvae were allowed, aphid colonies became inactive(i.e. no live aphids in the colony) about two weeksearlier than on controls. A strong dampening effect onaphid density was also observed in those colonies thatremained active until the end of the aphid life cycle.Predation on aphid colonies reduced sexualsproduction, as the density of M. abietinusoverwintering eggs per shoot subsequently was reducedby 32%. Predation by coccinellid larvae occurred toolate to prevent needle damage to current year shoots,which affects the aesthetic value of Christmas trees.However, current year shoots measured in the mid-crownof trees late in the season were 19% longer on treeswhere aphid predation by coccinellid larvae wasallowed, compared with trees where they were excluded.Rearing all larval stages of A. mali on 4thinstar and adult sexuparae of M. abietinusindicated an average consumption of 269 aphids tocomplete larval development and pupate, which wasequivalent to at least seven colonies of M.abietinus at maximum aphid density at theexperimental site. Anatis mali is an importantnatural control factor of balsam twig aphid inChristmas tree plantations, hence its activity shouldbe protected and possibly stimulated by favourablepest management practices.  相似文献

Summary Floronia bucculenta hibernates in the egg stage; the egg sacs are deposited on the leaves of grass tussocks without any shelter. The morphogenesis of the eggs was divided into 10 arbitrarily chosen stages, in order to test the dependence of embryonic development on temperature in the laboratory. The eggs developed slowly at 23°C, 16°, 12.5°; embryogenesis stopped after 70–45 days, when prosomal appendage rudiments began to form. At 10°, 7.5°, 5°, 0° complete embryogenesis was possible until the emergence of the first complete stage. The eggs developed most rapidly at 5° (mean developmental time 203 days). The egg development was normal at 5° and 0°, when compared with the timetable of the embryogenesis of the linyphiid Bathyphantes gracilis, a species which has no egg diapause. At 7.5° and 10° the embryogenesis was strongly delayed during the median phases of development (elongation of the germ band, formation of prosomal appendages); after reversion the development was accelerated (postdiapause phase). After long exposure to low temperatures (-10° to +10°) the diapause was terminated. A temperature of 0° was optimal (minimal time of exposure 8–9 weeks). The time required for embryonic development of postdiapause eggs decreased hyperbolically with increasing temperature. In the field the median phases of embryogenesis were retarded by low ambient temperatures; diapause was terminated from late December to mid-January. The spread of hatching in spring was 7–15 days.During the diapause phase the O2-consumption of the eggs at 25° was depressed. It rose from 1.55 (in late diapause) to 4.21 ml/100 eggs·h at the onset of postdiapause, whereas O2-utilization did not change significantly at 5° (from 0.54 to 0.61 ml/100 eggs·h just after the termination of diapause).The diapause phase was not characterized by higher resistance to cold, drought, or flooding. As compared with single eggs removed from the cocoon, the silken wall of the intact egg sac did not affect the survival of postdiapause eggs exposed to-15° (LD50=28 days); it raised, however, the survival time of eggs exposed to a R.H. of 32% (at 5°) or flooding by distilled water (at 5°): from LD50=37 to 68 days at drought, from LD50=30 to 92 days at flooding.Diapause is important for synchronizing the life-cycle of F. bucculenta with the seasonal fluctuations of environment. The egg stage is highly tolerant to the extreme factors of the winter. Some implications of the relation of the studied spider to its habitat are discussed.  相似文献

1. Little is known about the predators of insect eggs in fresh waters. This study describes aspects of the life history of a scathophagid fly (Acanthocnema sp.), whose larvae are predators of aquatic insect eggs. 2. Because the Acanthocnema predator oviposits its eggs on the surface of aquatic insect egg masses, all insect egg masses were collected regularly within a 200‐m reach of Redwood Creek (California, U.S.A.) between September 2003 and June 2007. Acanthocnema predators were found predominantly within egg masses of the caddifly Neophylax rickeri (Trichoptera: Uenoidae). 3. There was a mean of 0.25 Acanthocnema individuals per N. rickeri egg mass (n = 2367 egg masses). In general, N. rickeri egg masses were more commonly found clustered in aggregations (93.7%) than singly (6.3%), and Acanthonema were found more often within the aggregations of N. rickeri (98.7%) compared to singly laid egg masses (1.3%). 4. The duration of the Acanthocnema predator life stages was: egg 2.9 ± 0.8 (mean ± SD) days, larva 15.6 ± 10.2 days, pupa 80.3 ± 24.9 days and adult 7.2 ± 4.8 days. The short duration of the Acanthocnema egg stage (1–7 days) compared to that of its prey N. rickeri (2–4 weeks) raises the probability that the undeveloped eggs of N. rickeri would be available to the young predators upon hatching. Egg consumption of N. rickeri eggs by Acanthocnema averaged 262.6 eggs per larval period. 5. Acanthocnema had a bivoltine life cycle in which the first generation fed exclusively on N. rickeri egg masses in the winter and the second generation fed on the egg masses of several species, including other Trichoptera (Brachycentridae) and Diptera (Ceratopogonidae, Chironomidae) in the spring. These findings suggest differing feeding strategies by the first and second generations of Acanthocnema in response to the seasonal availability of prey species. This type of autecological information is important for understanding mechanisms of community interactions.  相似文献

Temperature and photoperiod play major roles in insect ecology. Many insect species have fixed degree‐days for embryogenesis, with minimum and maximum temperature thresholds for egg and larval development and hatching. Often, photoperiodic changes trigger the transfer into the next life‐cycle stadium. However, it is not known whether this distinct pattern also exist in a species with a high level of phenotypic plasticity in life‐history traits. In the present study, eggs of the dragonfly Sympetrum striolatum Charpentier (Odonata: Libellulidae) are reared under different constant and fluctuating temperatures and photoperiodic conditions in several laboratory and field experiments. In general, and as expected, higher temperatures cause faster egg development. However, no general temperature or light‐days for eyespot development and hatching are found. The minimum temperature thresholds are distinguished for survival (2 °C), embryogenesis (6 °C) and larval hatching (above 6 °C). Low winter temperatures synchronize hatching. Above 36 °C, no eyespots are visible and no larvae hatch. In laboratory experiments, light is neither necessary for eyespot development, nor for hatching. By contrast to the laboratory experiments, the field experiment show that naturally changing temperature and photoperiod play a significant role in the seasonal regulation of embryonic development. The post‐eyespot development is more variable and influenced by temperature and photoperiod than the pre‐eyespot development. This developmental plasticity at the end of the embryogenesis might be a general pattern in the Libellulidae, helping them to cope with variation in environmental conditions.  相似文献

Abstract Most studies of insect reproductive allocation concentrate on propagule size and number and very few consider egg composition, which is likely to be equally important. In the present study, data are provided on changes in egg lipid, glycogen, free carbohydrate and protein during embryonic development of the aphidophagous ladybird Adalia bipunctata (L.) and the compositions of A. bipunctata, Adalia decempunctata and Anisosticta novemdecimpunctata eggs are compared. In A. bipunctata, egg mass, lipid and glycogen decline strongly during development and egg protein declines more weakly. Free carbohydrate declines early in egg development and increases at egg hatching. Lipid is energetically the most important developmental fuel, although approximately half of the initial egg lipid remains in the neonate larva. Across the three species, energy per unit egg mass is lowest in the least specialized species, A. bipunctata, which also has the largest eggs, and is highest in the most specialized, An. novemdecimpunctata, which has the smallest eggs. Two possible explanations for the observed pattern are discussed: (i) species laying smaller eggs may incur higher developmental costs per unit mass than species laying larger eggs and (ii) more specialized species, which reproduce at lower aphid densities, may provision neonate larvae better to facilitate location and capture of aphids.  相似文献

Abstract: We assessed winter forage selection by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Anticosti Island, Quebec, Canada, using cafeteria-feeding trials. Winter habitat on Anticosti is degraded and free-ranging deer at high densities consume 70% balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and 20% white spruce (Picea glauca), even though spruce is much more available than fir. Deer ate 89.9% balsam fir and 10.1% white spruce when the availability of both trees was equal. Deer did not eat shredded twigs more than intact twigs. Fiber content and condensed tannins were greater in white spruce than in balsam fir. Deer preference for fir was not based on texture but, more likely, on plant constituents, so we concluded that deer will nearly eliminate fir before they use any significant amount of white spruce. Management actions, therefore, need to be undertaken to enhance balsam fir regeneration.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Efficacy of commercial formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki (Btk) against spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana was investigated in mixed balsam fir‐white spruce stands. Btk treatments were scheduled to coincide with early flaring of balsam fir shoots, and later with flaring of white spruce shoots. Btk efficacy on the two host trees was compared and examined according to the foliar content of nutrients and allelochemicals and the insect developmental stage at the time of spray. 2 Larvae fed white spruce foliage were less vulnerable to Btk ingestion than larvae fed balsam fir foliage. Higher larval survival on white spruce, observed 10 days after spray, was related to higher foliage content in tannins and a lower N/tannins ratio, which might have induced inactivation of Btk toxins. 3 Larval mortality due to Btk did not depend on spruce budworm larval age. 4 Foliage protection of both host trees was similar in plots treated with Btk: larval mortality due to Btk treatment reduced insect grazing pressure on balsam fir trees; meanwhile, suitability of white spruce foliage seemed to decrease very rapidly, which induced high larval mortality among spruce budworm fed on white spruce trees. Nevertheless, following Btk sprays, 50% more foliage remained on white spruce than on balsam fir trees, because of the higher white spruce foliage production. 5 Both spray timings achieved similar protection of white spruce trees, but Btk treatments had to be applied as early as possible (i.e. during the flaring of balsam fir shoots to optimally protect balsam fir trees in mixed balsam fir‐white spruce stands).  相似文献

Hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), is one of the most important defoliator in North American forests. The common egg parasitoid Telenomus coloradensis Crawford (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) plays a significant role as a natural control agent, with parasitism levels in spring typically higher than in fall. The objectives of this study were to quantify changes in host acceptance and reproductive performance of the parasitoid in relation to (1) host egg fertilization in fall, (2) host diapause status, (3) host embryonic development in spring, and (4) host deprivation during summer. Our results indicate that T. coloradensis do not have the capacity to develop in unfertilized host eggs, whereas early‐diapausing eggs are more suitable for the parasitoid than post‐diapausing eggs. Furthermore, the host physiological suitability decreases with embryonic development in spring. Finally, a host deprivation period during the summer tends to negatively affect the parasitic activity of T. coloradensis. These laboratory results confirm previous hypotheses concerning T. coloradensis seasonal ecology and contribute to a better understanding of the effect of hemlock looper egg physiology and availability on the reproductive potential of T. coloradensis.  相似文献

In birds, the adaptive significance of hatching asynchrony has been under debate for many years and the parental effects on hatching asynchrony have been largely assumed but not often tested. Some authors suggest that hatching asynchrony depends on the incubation onset and many factors have been shown to influence hatching asynchrony in different species. Our objective was to analyze the exact timing of the onset of incubation and if this affects hatching asynchrony; and, in addition, which other factors (brood patch development, incubation position, adult body condition, intra‐clutch egg dimorphism, laying date and year) affect hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus. We first estimated the eggshell temperature at which embryo development starts, with a non‐destructive and novel method. We then recorded individual egg temperatures in 61 nests during incubation, and related them, and other breeding parameters, to hatching asynchrony. We also observed incubation positions in 307 nests. We found a significant positive relationship between hatching asynchrony and the temperature that the first‐laid egg experienced during egg laying and between hatching asynchrony and the initial brood patch area. We also found a negative relationship between hatching asynchrony and the difference in temperature between second and first‐laid eggs within a clutch, measured after the egg‐laying period was finished. We ruled out position of the eggs during incubation, adult body condition, egg volume, laying date, and study year as factors influencing hatching asynchrony. The egg temperature during laying and the difference in temperature between eggs of a clutch are determinants of hatching asynchrony in Magellanic penguins.  相似文献

Tonicia lebruni, a common, lower intertidal and subtidal chiton inhabiting Patagonian rocky shores, is a gonochoristic iteroparous species producing large eggs (≈ 400 μm in diameter), which are fertilized and brooded within the pallial groves until released as juveniles. A free larval stage is absent, despite this, T. lebruni is widely distributed along the south‐western Atlantic. At Puerto Deseado, T. lebruni has a marked seasonality in the reproductive cycle, reproducing only once a year. The reproductive period is quite short and defined in time: spawning and brooding take place during the late austral winter and beginning of spring. Recovery of the female gonad starts very soon after spawning. Oogenesis takes about 10–11 months for completion. Brood size is correlated with length of maternal individual. The number of embryos per brood varied between 785 and 5945. Extensive resorption of abortive eggs is viewed as related to limitation of space available for brooding. The egg hull is formed by a large number of minute pentagonal or hexagonal plates each one bearing a short spine bent onto the egg surface. The morphology and the surface of the hull could contribute to the cohesiveness of the brooded egg mass within the pallial grooves.  相似文献

To examine how dormancy contributes to the establishment and persistence of Bythotrephes longimanus, we investigated resting egg production and hatching in relation to the demography of the planktonic stage and environmental conditions in Island Lake Reservoir (USA). During a 3-year study, the largest contribution to the egg bank occurred in autumn and most eggs hatched in spring, but we also detected some resting egg production and hatching in summer. The difference between summer and late autumn densities of eggs in sediments averaged 47% (range 0–98%) for 18 sites throughout the reservoir, which was similar to experimental estimates of in situ hatching fraction of 67% for eggs in the spring and summer following their production. Based on emergence traps, neonates hatch in the field during May and June. We estimated mortality rates of 64% for resting eggs and embryos, and 59% for newly emerged neonates. Although hatching fraction saturated at the same level, eggs incubated offshore hatched later than those nearshore where water temperature was warmer and light was detectable at the sediment surface. Low dissolved oxygen concentration did not significantly reduce hatching fraction but resulted in some eggs that initiated development but failed to hatch. Collectively, our results demonstrate substantial annual turnover in the resting egg bank of B. longimanus and high mortality of resting eggs during recruitment from the egg to the first molt of the planktonic stage. These patterns suggest that propagule pressure in the form of resting eggs requires large numbers for establishment, and that considerable post-establishment resting egg production is necessary for inter-annual persistence.  相似文献

The seasonal variations in diel production pattern, and egg hatching time of the copepod Centropages tenuiremis in Xiamen waters, China, were investigated between January and June of 2003. The results show that in the winter–spring (January to early May) the adult females tended to lay subitaneous eggs at night, while in the beginning of summer (late May–June) they tended to lay diapause eggs as well as subitaneous eggs during the daytime. The egg hatching time negatively correlated with water temperature. These results, combined with the fact that C. tenuiremis migrates vertically in Xiamen waters, may explain the reproductive strategy of this dominant species in winter–spring.  相似文献

In temperate regions, populations of Aedes aegypti survive the cold season in the egg stage. In the present work, we studied the cold‐season mortality of Ae. aegypti eggs and their subsequent hatching pattern in Buenos Aires city. Eggs were exposed during the winter season (three months) in three neighborhoods located along a gradient of distance toward the Río de la Plata River, coincident with a gradient of activity of Ae. aegypti. Results showed mortalities lower (30.6%) than those from tropical regions during the dry season. Significant differences were detected among the egg mortalities of each site with a maximum value at the site nearest the Río de la Plata River (50%), and a minimum value at the most continental site (9%). Post‐experimental hatching response of eggs differed between sites, with the highest proportion of hatched eggs during the first immersion in the site nearest to the river and the lowest proportion in the most continental site. The hatching proportion also differed between age classes, with older (early‐laid) eggs hatching later than new (late‐laid) ones. Our results provide the first information of Ae. aegypti egg mortality in temperate South America and support the hypothesis that differences in egg mortality are associated with abundance patterns of Ae. aegypti in Buenos Aires city.  相似文献

1. Winter conditions shape plankton dynamics and community composition in temperate regions, but their effect on dynamics and genetic composition of cyclical parthenogens like Daphnia is largely unclear. 2. For 5 years, we studied the dynamics, hatching from resting eggs and genetic structure of a D. galeata × longispina hybrid complex in a dimictic, temperate reservoir. Our main hypothesis was that higher spring densities and an earlier population peak will be observed after warmer winters, with a lower genetic diversity because of a lower contribution of resting eggs to population growth. 3. The study period could clearly be categorised into cold‐winter years (n = 3) and warm‐winter years (n = 2). Daphnia densities at the end of spring overturn were ~10‐fold lower after cold winters than after warm ones, but no pattern emerged concerning the timing and the height of the population peak in early summer. 4. Hatching intensity from resting eggs was higher and contributed up to 8.5% to Daphnia abundance in a cold‐winter year compared to a negligible contribution in a warm‐winter year. Consistent with this finding, new multilocus genotypes (MLGs) adding to the overwintering stock after the end of spring overturn and presumably originating from resting eggs increased genetic diversity and attained high frequencies within the population only after a cold winter. New MLGs were recorded also after warm winters, but they never gained dominance and no shift in genetic diversity was observed. However, genetic diversity was not generally reduced after warm winters. 5. Our results confirm earlier findings that winter conditions have only a limited effect on the main growth phase and the peak of Daphnia during late spring and early summer. However, winter conditions determine the contribution of resting eggs to the population development, which may profoundly alter the genetic composition of the population compared to the previous season.  相似文献

Insect parasitoids and herbivores must balance the risk of egg limitation and time limitation in order to maximize reproductive success. Egg and time limitation are mediated by oviposition and egg maturation rates as well as by starvation risk and other determinants of adult lifespan. Here, we assessed egg load and nutritional state in the soybean aphid parasitoid Binodoxys communis under field conditions to estimate its risk of becoming either egg‐ or time‐limited. The majority of female B. communis showed no signs of egg limitation. Experimental field manipulations of B. communis females suggested that an average of 4–8 eggs were matured per hour over the course of a day. Regardless, egg loads remained constant over the course of the day at approximately 80 eggs, suggesting that egg maturation compensates for oviposition. This is the first case of such “egg load buffering” documented for a parasitoid in the field. Despite this buffering, egg loads dropped slightly with increasing host (aphid) density. This suggests that egg limitation could occur at very high host densities as experienced in outbreak years in some locations in the Midwestern USA. Biochemical analyses of sugar profiles showed that parasitoids fed upon sugar in the field at a remarkably high rate. Time limitation through starvation thus seems to be very low and aphid honeydew is most likely a source of dietary sugar for these parasitoids. This latter supposition is supported by the fact that body sugar levels increase with host (aphid) density. Together, these results suggest that fecundity of B. communis benefits from both dynamic egg maturation strategies and sugar‐feeding.  相似文献

The seasonal timing mechanism of egg hatching was examined in two cicadas, Cryptotympana facialis and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata, with different but overlapping geographical distributions. These species lay eggs in summer, and nymphs hatch in the summer of the following year after egg durations of 10-12 months. When eggs were maintained at 25 °C from oviposition, both the species entered embryonic diapause within 60 days irrespective of photoperiod, but at different developmental stages between the two species. The optimal temperature for diapause development was approximately 15 °C in both the species. The development rate for postdiapause morphogenesis increased linearly with temperature in the range of 20-27.5 °C in C. facialis, and of 15-25 °C in G. nigrofuscata. The lower development threshold and the sum of effective temperatures were computed as 14.3 °C and 715.3 day-degrees in C. facialis and 12.1 °C and 566.6 day-degrees in G. nigrofuscata, respectively. The hatching dates predicted by these large thermal constants accorded with the hatching dates observed in the field, i.e., late June and mid-July in G. nigrofuscata and C. facialis, respectively. Therefore, the high thermal requirements for postdiapause development compel the cicadas to hatch in summer.  相似文献

The balsam twig aphid, Mindarus abietinus Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae), is a major insect pest of balsam and Fraser fir grown for Christmas trees. Our objectives in this study were to 1) monitor the phenology of A. abietinus in fir plantations; 2) assess relationships among M. abietinus density, tree phenology, and damage to tree foliage; and 3) develop an esthetic injury level for M. abietinus on Christmas trees. We monitored phenology of M. abietinus and fir trees on three commercial Christmas tree plantations in central and northern Lower Michigan for 3 yr (1999-2001). Phenology of M. abietinus fundatrices and sexuparae was strongly correlated with accumulated degree-days (DD) base 10 degrees C. Fundatrices matured by approximately 83 DD(10 degrees C) and sexuparae were first observed at approximately 83-111 DD(10 degrees C). Trees that broke bud approximately 1 wk later than other trees in the same field escaped M. abietinus damage and shoot expansion rate in spring was generally positively correlated with M. abietinus damage. Retail customers surveyed at a choose-and-cut Christmas plantation in 2 yr did not consistently differentiate between similarly sized trees with no, light, and moderate M. abietinus damage, but heavy damage (>50% damaged shoots) did affect customer perception. Similarly, when wholesale grades were assigned, the high quality Grade 1 trees had up to 40% shoot damage, whereas Grade 2 trees had 32-62% shoot damage. Two trees ranked as unsaleable had sparse canopies and distorted needles on 42% to almost 100% of the shoots.  相似文献

1. Semi-arid rangeland productivity is limited by precipitation, and yet droughts are projected to increase in frequency and duration with unknown impacts on insect populations. As some katydids prolong diapause and remain in an egg bank as a blastoderm for multiple growing seasons, is it possible that drought could prolong diapause and promote outbreaks by synchronising embryonic development and hatching of Mormon crickets, Anabrus simplex, after moisture is restored? 2. In this study, a high-elevation Wyoming population (WY) was compared with a mid-elevation Idaho (ID) and a low-elevation Oregon population (OR). It was predicted that eggs from the drier ID and OR habitats would be more tolerant of desiccation. Developmental state and water loss of eggs were measured after drought treatments, and when moisture was restored. 3. The two drier treatments had significantly more WY eggs prolonging diapause until after drought ended compared with the two wetter treatments. Whether WY eggs developed in the second or subsequent warm periods was independent of drought treatments. Significantly fewer OR embryos developed in the driest treatment compared with the others, whereas almost all ID eggs developed irrespective of the drought treatment. 4. In conclusion, Mormon crickets can delay embryonic development to improve drought tolerance. Although drought did not synchronise development and hatching, diapause plasticity allowed insects to cope and await more favourable conditions. 5. Unexpectedly, eggs from WY (the highest, wettest site) were more tolerant, because postponing development resulted in less water loss than in developed embryos.
