Adult survival and fecundity of three Dalbulus leafhopper species were determined at constant temperatures of 20, 23, 26 and 29°C. Survival was measured by quartiles (i.e. time to 75%, 50% and 25% survival) and estimated parameters of the Weibull model fitted to the survival distributions. D. gelbus lived as long or significantly (P= 0.05) longer than the other species at all temperatures. D. maidis (the corn leafhopper) had survival times equal to or significantly shorter than D. elimatus (the Mexican corn leafhopper) at all temperatures except 29°C where D. maidis lived the longest. The shape of the survival curves did not vary among species or change with temperature. The fecundity of D. gelbus, as measured by the average number of eggs laid per female per generation, was equal to or significantly lower than the other species at all temperatures. D. maidis and D. elimatus had similar fecundity at all temperatures except 29°C, where D. maidis produced significantly more eggs. The mean development time from egg to adult declined with temperature between 17 and 29°C. At all temperatures, D. maidis developed the fastest, D. gelbus the slowest, and D. elimatus was intermediate. The results can be explained on the basis of the geographic distribution, plant host species, and life-history strategies of the leafhoppers. Models for describing the population dynamics of leafhoppers are evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

Little is known about the natural enemies of the leafhopperDalbulus spp. (Homoptera: Cicadellidae). Searches for its dryinid (wasps) parasitoids were made in Jalisco, Mexico. Jalisco contains the greatest number ofDalbulus species, and is considered to be near to the center of origin of this leafhopper genus and its host plants: maize, teosintes (Zea spp.) and gamagrasses (Tripsacum spp.). The dryinidGonatopus bartletti was found parasitizingD. maidis on maize and on annual teosinteZea mays spp.parviglumis. G. flavipes was found parasitizingD. elimatus on perennial teosinteZ. perennis; and a new speciesG. moyaraygozai andAnteon ciudadi parasitizingD. quinquenotatus onTripsacum pilosum andT. dactyloides. Parasitism by dryinids was found at altitudes of 680–2,000 m.Dalbulus maidis, the leafhopper species which causes the greatest losses in maize in Latin America, was found to be parasitized from 680–1,760 m. TheDalbulus species associated with annual host plants (maize andZ. mays spp.parviglumis) were parasitized by dryinids during the rainy season, while theDalbulus species associated with perennial host plants (Z. perennis andTripsacum) were parasitized by dryinids during both the rainy and dry season. The greatest diversity of dryinid parasitoids ofDalbulus spp. and the highest levels of parasitism were recorded from perennial plants, indicating that such species are reservoirs of natural enemies ofDalbulus spp.  相似文献

Few leafhopper species are known to be ant-attended. Evidence is presented that unequivocally demonstrates that Dalbulus quinquenotatusis a myrmecophile. In a greenhouse study, the behavior of D. quinquenotatusand four Dalbulusspecies not associated with ants was observed in the absence and presence of the pavement ant, Tetramorium caespitum. D. quinquenotatusis readily contacted by tending ants and responds to stroking on the abdomen from ants' antennae by excreting and holding honeydew droplets until droplets are removed by ants. Nonattended Dalbulusspecies avoid contact with ants by walking,jumping, or flying away when approached. D. quinquenotatusexcretes three to six times the volume of honeydew as do two nonattended species, D. maidisand D. gelbus.Droplets of D. quinquenotatusare about 23% larger in diameter and excreted two to four times more frequently than for the other species. D. quinquenotatustakes about 0.15 s to form honeydew droplets on the anal tube, then holds the droplet an average of 0.28 s before expelling it when ants are absent. In the presence of ants, D. quinquenotatusholds the droplet an average of 1.31 s, which gives ants time to harvest the droplet. Nonattended species, however, immediately expel droplets from the anal tube after droplet formation. This ant-leafhopper mutualism apparently has evolved due to the ability of D. quinquenotatusto have extensive physical contact with ants and excrete large amounts of honeydew. D. chiapensis,a possible descendent of D. quinquenotatus,may secondarily have lost its mutualistic relationship with ants.  相似文献

Low-temperature (LT) tolerance is an important economic trait in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that determines the plants’ ability to cope with below freezing temperatures. Essential elements of the LT tolerance mechanism are associated with the winter growth habit controlled by the vernalization loci (Vrn-1) on the group 5 chromosomes. To identify genomic regions, which in addition to vrn-1 determine the level of LT tolerance in hexaploid wheat, two doubled haploid (DH) mapping populations were produced using parents with winter growth habit (vrn-A1, vrn-B1, and vrn-D1) but showing different LT tolerance levels. A total of 107 DH lines were analyzed by genetic mapping to produce a consensus map of 2,873 cM. The LT tolerance levels for the Norstar (LT50=−20.7°C) × Winter Manitou (LT50=−14.3°C) mapping population ranged from −12.0 to −22.0°C. Single marker analysis and interval mapping of phenotyped lines revealed a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 5A and a weaker QTL on chromosome 1D. The 5A QTL located 46 cM proximal to the vrn-A1 locus explained 40% of the LT tolerance variance. Two C-repeat Binding Factor (CBF) genes expressed during cold acclimation in Norstar were located at the peak of the 5A QTL.  相似文献

The effect of corn stunt spiroplasma (CSS) on survival and fecundity of three Dalbulus leafhopper species was determined. CSS significantly reduced the survival, as measured by the time to 50% (t50) and 25% (t25) survival, and by the scale parameter (b) of the Weibull model, for D. elimatus and D. gelbus. Fecundity of these two species, as measured by the net and gross reproductive rates, was also reduced by CSS. CSS did not significantly affect the corn leafhopper, D. maidis. In a separate experiment, maize bushy stunt mycoplasma (MBSM) reduced the survival and fecundity of D. maidis at temperatures from 20 to 29 °C. The effect of MBSM on D. maidis survival was less severe than CSS on D. elimatus and D. gelbus; t25, but not t50, was reduced by MBSM. Survival times and the cohort generation time generally declined with increasing temperature. Fecundity, however, generally increased with increasing temperature.  相似文献

The importance of color stimuli in host-finding by Dalbulus maidis (DeLong & Wolcott), D. gelbus DeLong, and D. quinquenotatus DeLong & Nault (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) was determined by comparing pre- and post-contact responses of leafhoppers to maize seedlings (Zea mays L.) with those to vertical models varying in hue or value (total amount of reflected light). For each species, more contacts were made with maize by jumping/flying than by walking, and both sexes remained on maize for similar times after contact. When presented simultaneously with seven models (vertical wooden rods) painted in different colors, each species made more contacts with yellow. Yellow also received more contacts when it was present in a group of four colors. There were no differences in contacts made with the yellow model by jumping/flying or by walking for D. maidis and D. gelbus, but D. quinquenotatus made more contacts by jumping/flying than by walking. If yellow was not present in the group, the color reflecting maximally between 500–580 nm received more contacts compared to the other three colors. Responses to a series of neutrals indicated contacts were elicited primarily because of hue, and not changes in value. Yellow also elicited tenure as long or significantly longer than other colors after contact with a model. For each species, there were no differences in tenure between males and females on models. The importance of color stimuli in host-finding by Dalbulus leafhoppers is suggested to be influenced by differences in flight behavior and habitat stability of field hosts.
Résumé Nous avons examiné l'importance de la couleur dans la découverte de l'hôte, en comparant au laboratoire les réactions avant et après contacts avec des plants de maïs,-à 4 feuilles-, et avec des leurres peints présentant des différences de nuance ou de quantité de lumière réfléchie, chez 3 espèces de Dalbulus: D. maidis,-spécialiste du maïs-, D. gelbus,-qui consomme le maïs et Tripsacum, et D. quinquenotatus,-spécialiste de Tripsacum. Les espèces entrent en contact avec le maïs plus en voltigeant que par la marche, mâles et femelles séjournant plusieurs heures après être entrés en contact. En utilisant des leurres végétaux,-des morceaux de bois verticaux peints de différentes couleurs-, une forte réponse au jaune, due à la teinte plus qu'à l'intensité, a été mise en évidence. Il n'y a pas de différence dans les contacts après voltige ou après marche avec des leurres jaunes pour D. maidis et D. gelbus, tandis que chez D. quinquenotatus, ils sont plus fréquents après voltige. Ces 3 espèces de Dalbulus continuent à être influencées par la couleur après contact, puisque chaque espèce reste plus longtemps sur le jaune que sur les autres couleurs. L'importance de la stimulation par la couleur dans la découverte des hôtes par Dalbulus est semble-t-il due au comportement de vol et à la stabilité de l'habitat dans la nature.

We tested hypotheses concerning the specificity of interactions between insect vectors and mollicute plant pathogens in a 22-month study of leafhoppers collected at three agricultural field sites in Mexico. The common species collected, Dalbulus maidis, D. elimatus, D. gelbus, and D. guevari were equally likely to test positive for corn stunt spiroplasma (CSS) in ELISA, and to transmit maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBSP) to test maize seedlings. We documented intraspecific variation in the ability of D. maidis to transmit confirmed CSS infections. Dalbulus guevari and D. gelbus were less successful in transmitting CSS than D. maidis from the same population. Our results suggest this vector-plant pathogen interaction is not specific to a single Dalbulus-mollicute combination, and that both the range of potential vectors in agricultural fields, and intraspecific variation across populations of these vectors, should be the focus of future work.  相似文献

Athrycia cinerea Coq. is a univoltine parasitoid of the bertha armyworm,Mamestra configurata Walker (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in western Canada. This parasitoid overwinters as a pupa in the soil. These pupae are less sensitive than their host to increased cold stress caused by lower temperatures or danger durations of exposure. Exposure to −7.5°C for 140 days did not significantly reduce survival. Survival decreased with exposure to temperatures from −10 to −20°C, but survival was 48% even after 40 days exposure to −20°C. Rhodamine-phalloidin staining of winter oilseed rape suspension cells revealed that the structure of actin cytoskeleton changes with the phase of cell growth. In small, 4-day-old cells, entering the exponential phase of growth, a dense and uniformly distributed cortical microfilament networks was seen. In six-day-old vacuolated cells, which reached the stationary phase of growth, the actin cytoskeleton was composed of thicker microfilament cables in irregular arrangements. In cells acclimated in cold for 7 days a dense, uniformly distributed and cortical microfilament network was still seen. The fine microfilament network was sensitive to extracellular freezing since the structures underwent depolymerization at −3 °C (in the presence of extracellular ice), both in non-acclimated and cold-acclimated cells. The thicker transvacuolar cables in cells of the stationary growth phase resisted freezing to −7 °C. Acclimation of suspensions at 2 °C resulted in slowing down growth of cells and in the increased freezing tolerance of cells as indicated by a decrease of LT50 from −11 °C to −17.5o or to −25 °C when determined 7 or 20 days after the beginning of the cold treatment, respectively. Freezing tolerance of non-acclimated cells decreased from −11 °C to −8 °C during subculture, showing a transient increase to −17 °C on the day 6. Results indicate that the arrangement of actin microfilaments and their sensitivity to freezing-induced depolymerization depends on the phase of cell growth rather than on cell acclimation status. Possible mechanisms involved in the freezing-induced depolymerization of actin microfilaments are discussed. Seasonally acclimatized adult and immature parasites of the citrus blackfly (CBF),Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, were exposed to high or low temperature extremes for 3 h periods. Death of all summer adults ofEncarsia opulenta Silvestri andE. smithi Silvestri occurred between 35° and 40°C. Within CBF hosts,E. opulenta were not able to emerge when temperatures reached between 45° and 50°C. In winter experiments adults of bothEncarsia species succumbed between −5° and −10°C. In a comparison of the 2 seasonal tests, a higher percentage ofE. smithi adults were able to survive both higher and lower temperatures thanE. opulenta, but the main interspecific difference was the ability ofE. opulenta within CBF to survive −10° to − 15°C whileE. smithi did not. Arctic ground squirrels overwintering in northern Alaska experience average soil temperature of −10°C. To examine energetic costs of arousing from hibernation under arctic compared to temperate conditions, captive ground squirrels were maintained in ambient temperatures (T a) of 2, −5 and −12°C. Rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production were used to estimate metabolic rate and fuel use during the three phases of arousal episodes: rewarming, euthermia, and recooling. Respiratory quotient comparisons suggest exclusive use of lipid during rewarming and mixed fuel use during euthermia. Animals rewarming from torpor at T a −12°C took longer, consumed more oxygen, and attained higher peak rates of oxygen consumption when compared to 2°C. T a had no significant effect on cost or duration of the euthermic phase. Animals recooled faster at −12°C than at 2°C, but total oxygen consumption was not different. T a had no significant effect on the total cost of arousal episodes when all three phases are included. Arousal episodes account for 86% of estimated costs of a complete hibernation cycle including torpor when at 2°C and only 23% at −12°C. Thus, due to the higher costs of steady-state metabolism during torpor, proportional metabolic costs of arousal episodes at T a characteristic of the Arctic are diminished compared to relative costs of arousals in more temperate conditions.  相似文献

Nitrogenous excretion in two snails, Littorina saxatilis (high intertidal) and L. obtusata (low intertidal) was studied in relation to temperature acclimation (at 4° and 21°C), including total N excretion rates, the fraction of urea in N excretion, corresponding O:N ratios and the partitioning of deaminated protein between catabolic and anabolic processes at 4°, 11° and 21°C. Aggregate N excretion rates in both species showed no significant compensatory adjustments following acclimation. Total weight specific N excretion rates at 21°C were higher in standard 3 mg L. saxatilis (739 ng N mg−1 h−1) than standard 5 mg L. obtusata (257 ng N mg−1 h−1) for snails acclimated to 21°C. Comparisons of Q10 values of total weight specific N excretion to Q10 values for weight specific oxygen consumption ({xxV}O2) between 4° to 11 °C and 11° to 21°C indicated that, while total rates of catabolic metabolism ({xxV}O2) and protein deamination in L. obtusata were essentially parallel, the relationship between N excretion and {xxV}O2 in L. saxatilis revealed the partitioning of a larger share of deaminated protein carbon into anabolism at 4° and 21°C than at 11°C. Urea N accounted for a larger share of aggregate N excreted in L. saxatilis than in L. obtusata, but in both species urea N is a greater proportion of total N excreted when acclimated at 4°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 1 to 2.15) than in snails acclimated to 21°C (urea N: ammonia N ratio range: 0.46 to 1.39). Molar O:N ratios indicate that the proportion of metabolism supported by protein catabolism is greater in L. saxatilis (O:N range: 2.5–8.4) than in L. obtusata (O:N range: 7.3–13.0). In both species, regardless of acclimation temperature, the O:N ratios are generally lowest (high protein catabolism) at 4°C and highest at 21°C.  相似文献

The winter-active Diamesa mendotae Muttkowski (Diptera: Chironomidae) is freeze intolerant in the adult stage with a low mean supercooling point (SCP) of ~−20 °C. However, cold-hardiness strategies for immatures of this species are unknown. In this study, we measured SCP values for D. mendotae larvae, pupae and adults using surface-contact thermometry. In addition, the lower lethal temperature (LLT) was determined for the larval stage. The mean SCPs for larvae (−7.4 °C) and pupae (−9.1 °C) were relatively high compared to adults (−19.7 °C). Our results indicate that the larvae of D. mendotae are freeze tolerant with a LLT99 (−25.4 °C), ~−10 °C lower than their minimum SCP (−15.6 °C). Freeze tolerance in these larvae may be a strategy to provide protection from short-term exposures to ice crystals or to permit diapause within frozen substrates. The change in cold-hardiness strategy from freeze tolerant to freeze intolerant between the larval and adult stages of this species is likely a result of the different habitats occupied by these two life stages.  相似文献

The leafhopper Dalbulus maidis DeLong & Wolcott survived significantly longer on aster, Callistephus chinensis Nees, infected with any one of 3 strains of aster yellows (AY) mycoplasma-like organism (MLO) than on healthy asters. After 7 or more days on AY-diseased aster, females were conditioned to survive longer on healthy asters than were leafhoppers of the same age previously exposed only to maize. Females were also conditioned to survive longer on healthy aster by prior exposure to AY-MLO-infected celery (Apium graveolens L.). Males were not so conditioned. Leafhoppers injected with infectious extracts of AY-MLO dit not live longer on aster nor transmit the AY-MLO to aster. Conditioning on AY-diseased aster did not cause D. maidis to transmit AY-MLO and did not interfere with the transmission to maize of the mollicute (Spiroplasma kunkelii Whitcomb et al.) that causes corn stunt disease. Spiroplasma citri Saglio et al. infection of aster but not of turnip (Brassica rapa L.), Plantago major L. or periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus (L.)), improved the longevity of D. maidis on these plants and conditioned leafhoppers for enhanced subsequent survival on healthy asters.

Le conditionnement sur aster AY n'a pas entrainé la transmission de AY-MLO par D. maidis, et n'a pas interferé avec son aptitude à transmettre l'agent du nanisme du maïs, Spiroplasma kunkelii. S. citri a aussi conditionné D. maidis sur aster, mais a été sans effet sur navet (Brassica rapa), sur plantain (Plantago major) et sur pervenche (Vinca).

Seedlings of O. violaceus were cultured on MS media and treated at low temperature. Cold treatment at 5–7 °C for more than 7 days was needed for flower induction of seedlings in vitro originated from germinated seeds. When cultured on MS media supplemented with 2.5 mg l−1 zeatin and 2 mg l−1 gibberellin (GA3), seedlings in vitro did initiate flowers without cold treatment. When MS media was used with a reduced amount of NH4NO3, flower induction of seedlings in vitro could be accelerated. Pantoea dispersa strain 1A is a Gram-negative rod-shaped, yellow-pigmented bacterium isolated on nutrient agar plates incubated at 4°C. The identity of the bacterium was confirmed by sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene. It was capable of growing at temperatures ranging from 4 to 42°C, but maximum growth was observed at 30°C. It is endowed with multiple plant growth promotion attributes such as phosphate solubilization, IAA production, siderophore production and HCN production, which are expressed differentially at sub-optimal temperatures (15 and 4°C). It was able to solubilize phosphate (17.6 μg of P2O5 ml−1 day−1), and produce IAA (3.7 μg ml−1 day−1), at 15°C. Qualitative detection of siderophore production and HCN were also observed at 15°C. At 4°C it was found to express all the plant growth promotion attributes. This bacterial isolate was able to positively influence and promote the growth and nutrient uptake parameters of wheat (cv. VL.802) under glasshouse conditions. Hence in the context, of cold wheat-growing environments, it is proposed that Pantoea dispersa 1A (MTCC 8706), could be deployed as an inoculant to attain the desired results of bacterization.  相似文献

Polar-desert plants experience low average air temperatures during their short growing season (4–8 °C mean July temperature). In addition, low availability of inorganic nitrogen in the soil may also limit plant growth. Our goals were to elucidate which N sources can be acquired by polar-desert plants, and how growth and N-uptake are affected by low growth temperatures. We compared rates of N-uptake and increases in mass and leaf area of two polar-desert species (Cerastium alpinum L. and Saxifraga caespitosa L.) over a period of 3 weeks when grown at two temperatures (6 °C vs. 15 °C) and supplied with either glycine, NH4 + or NO3 . At 15 °C, plants at least doubled their leaf area, whereas there was no change in leaf area at 6 °C. Measured mean N-uptake rates varied between 0.5 nmol g−1 root DM s−1 on glycine at 15 °C and 7.5 nmol g−1 root DM s−1 on NH4 + at 15 °C. Uptake rates based upon increases in mass and tissue N concentrations showed that plants had a lower N-uptake rate at 6 °C, regardless of N source or species. We conclude that these polar-desert plants can use all three N sources to increase their leaf area and support flowering when grown at 15 °C. Based upon short-term (8 h) uptake experiments, we also conclude that the short-term capacity to take up inorganic or organic N is not reduced by low temperature (6 °C). Quantitative changes in total leaf soluble proteins, proline, carbohydrate content, chlorophyll fluorescence, guaiacol peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) activities were determined in a less cold-hardy (LCH) spring cv. Kohdasht (LT50 = −6°C), a semi cold-hardy (SCH) facultative cv. Azar 2 (LT50 = −15°C), and a cold-hardy (CH) winter cv. Norstar (LT50 = −26°C) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) exposed to 4°C for 9 weeks. Seedlings were grown in a controlled growth room for 14 days at 20°C and then transferred to 4°C (experimental day 0) for 63 days (cold treatment); otherwise they were maintained continuously at 20°C (control treatment). The samples were harvested 0, 2, 21, 28, 42, and 63 days after exposure to 4°C. The results showed significant low temperature (LT)-induced accumulation of total soluble proteins, proline, and carbohydrates and elevation in activities of CAT and POD in leaves of SCH and CH winter cultivars rather than in LCH spring cultivar. In contrast, the chlorophyll fluorescence (F v/F m) declined during LT treatment irrespective of cultivar. The results suggest that developmental traits such as vernalization requirement of wheat affects on cold-tolerance expression system of plants.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, irradiance, and daylength on Sargassum horneri growth were examined at the germling and adult stages to discern their physiological differences. Temperature–irradiance (10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C × 20, 40, 80 μmol photons m−2s−1) and daylength (8, 12, 16, 24 h) experiments were carried out. The germlings and blades of S. horneri grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–25°C), irradiances (20–80 μmol photons m−2s−1), and daylengths (8–24 h). At the optimal growth conditions, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the germlings were 21% day−1 (25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 13% day−1 (8 h daylength). In contrast, the RGRs of the blade weights were 4% day−1 (15°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 5% day−1 (12 h daylength). Negative growth rates were found at 20 μmol photons m−2s−1 of 20°C and 25°C treatments after 12 days. This phenomenon coincides with the necrosis of S. horneri blades in field populations. In conclusion, we found physiological differences between S. horneri germlings and adults with respect to daylength and temperature optima. The growth of S. horneri germlings could be enhanced at 25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 8 h daylength for construction of Sargassum beds and restoration of barren areas.  相似文献

Food limitation was tested in the laboratory by individual growth and reproduction of two cladoceran species, Ceriodaphnia richardi and Daphnia gessneri, from the shallow tropical Brazilian Lake Monte Alegre. The cladocerans were fed cultivated green alga Scenedesmus spinosus in concentrations of 0.20, 0.10, 0.05, and 0.025 mg C l−1. Higher biomass and growth rates occurred in the two highest-food concentrations; the two lowest ones negatively affected clutch size and first reproduction. The threshold food concentration is lower than 0.025 mg C l−1 and the incipient limiting level is a value between 0.10 and 0.20 mg C l−1. The largest species, D. gessneri, was more sensitive to low food concentrations. The effects of low and high temperatures (19 and 27°C) were evaluated by life table experiments with three cladocerans from the lake—Daphnia ambigua, D. gessneri, and Moina micrura—with no food limitation (1 mg C l−1 of S. spinosus). Higher population growth rates for the three species were found at 27°C; better performance in most life table parameters was observed for the former two species at the highest temperature, D. gessneri being the most sensitive to the lowest temperature. There are indications that temperature is an important abiotic factor that constrains populations of cladocerans for a short period in winter in the lake, when temperature decreases to 18–19°C. However, its influence cannot be separated from a biotic factor such as food, whose effect is stronger in the cool season, when concentrations are lower and contribution of inedible algae is relatively higher.  相似文献
