Effects of temperature on the subsequent development in continuouslight of floral buds formed after a single short-day cycle inLemna perpusilla 6746, a short-day plant, were studied usingfronds selected in relation to the order of emergence. The floralbuds developed to stage 1 regardless of the temperature duringthe following CL. The rate of development, however, was slowerat lower temperature. The minimum number of days in CL neededfor the abortion of once formed floral buds increased with adecrease in temperature, accompanied by an increase in the frondplastochron. Furthermore, when the frond plastochron was alteredby manipulation of the environmental conditions, i.e., lightintensity or medium strength, the minimum number of days inCL required for the abortion of the floral buds also changed. These results suggest that the development pattern of floralbuds in this plant is highly correlated with the frond plastochron. Summary In the short-day plant Impatiens balsamina it was found that, while floral buds are initiated with 3 short-day (SD) cycles, at least 8 such cycles are required for flowering. The numbers of floral buds and open flowers bear a linear relationship with the number of SD cycles. The induced floral buds revert to vegetative growth unless the plants receive the minimum number of SD cycles needed for flowering, this reversion occurring in a basipetal direction. The rate of extension growth of the stem increases with increasing numbers of SD cycles. The high rate is maintained longer in plants receiving 32 or more SD cycles, but the subsequent fall is also steeper in these plants than in plants receiving less inductive cycles. Senescence also occurs in these plants and appears to be related to the magnitude of reproductive development and the high rate of extension growth.  相似文献

Summary All floral buds of Impatiens balsamina plants exposed to 4 short-day (SD) cycles and then returned to long days reverted to vegetative growth. The same happened with the upper buds of plants receiving a larger number of SDs, even as many as 90 cycles. The reversal proceeded in a basipetal order. The number of floral buds and flowers increased, and their reversion to vegetative growth was delayed with increasing numbers of SD cycles. Depending upon the stage attained by the floral bud before the transfer of the plant to noninductive photoperiods one or more inner whorls of the flower were replaced by a vegetative apex. The tip of the placenta was able to resume vegetative growth even after the formation of fertile anthers and an ovary with abortive ovules, showing that the potentiality for reversion is maintained till quite late stages in floral bud development. Continuous exposure to SD cycles is required not only for the continued production of floral buds, but also for their development to mature flowers, indicating that the floral stimulus in this plant is not self-perpetuating.  相似文献

As the dynamics of changes in phytohormones may be involved in photoperiodic regulation of the rates of growth and flowering, fluctuation of cytokinins was followed in long-day and short-day tobacco. Zeatin (Z) and zeatin riboside (ZR) were identified in leaves and roots using a GC-MSC system. In plants of the long-day tobaccoNicotiana silvestris increasing the number of long-day inductive for flowering (10, 20, 30, 40 LD) resulted in a rise in ZR activity. Half the plants reached a reproductive stage on the 40th day of induction. In short-day Mam moth tobacco plants, short-day floral induction (10, 20, 30, 40 SD) caused similar but less marked changes in ZR.  相似文献

Summary In the qualitative short-day plant Impatiens balsamina, gibberellic acid (GA3) not only promoted the formation of floral buds in response to suboptimal photoinductive conditions and reduced the number of SD cycles that are required for their development into flowers, but also caused initiation of floral buds under non-inductive photoperiods. In plants treated with repeated applications of GA3, the floral buds developed into flowers irrespective of whether the apex was left intact or was removed. In those that received a single application of GA3 the floral buds developed into flowers only in decapitated plants.  相似文献

The effect of floral stimulus on flower sex expression in monoeciouscucurbits was examined using a qualitative short-day plant,Sicyos angulatus L. Sicyos was induced to flower not only bygrafting it onto a flower-induced plant of the same speciesbut also by intergeneric grafting Onto the day-neutral plantCucumis sativus L. or the quantitative short-day plant Luffacylindrica Roem under noninductive long-day conditions. Sicyosplant grafted onto various cucumber varieties having differentgenetic backgrounds for their sex expression developed bothstaminate and pistillate inflorescences with similar sex expression. When the availability of floral stimulus was restricted as inthe case of grafting of Sicyos onto young cucumber seedlingsat the cotyledonary stage, most inflorescences appearing onthe Sicyos were staminate ones. Pistillate flowers formed onthe cucumber receptors substantially increased when they weregrafted onto Sicyos donors which had a sufficient number ofleaves induced by short-days as compared with those graftedonto noninduced ones. These results suggest that the availabilityof floral stimulus participates in the sex expression of flowersin Cucurbitaceae. Undeveloped pistillate inflorescences, whichoccasionally appear on Sicyos scion, flowered normally whenN6-benzylaminopurine was directly applied to the inflorescence. To test the proposition that photoperiodic controls synchronizethe flowering of cowpeas, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. [V. sinensis(L.) Savi], the day-length requirements for floral initiationand for flowering were investigated in several short-day accessions. No evidence was found of different critical photoperiods atdifferent stages of development, but exposure to only 2–4short days was required for floral initiation compared withabout 20 for development to open flowers. Pod setting was increasedafter exposure to even one short day more than the number requiredfor flower opening. Floral buds at higher nodes appeared to require fewer shortdays for development to flowering than buds at the lower nodes, and displayed faster rates of development. Inflorescence budsdid not resume development if they were exposed to 15 or morelong days following inflorescence initiation. Thus, any tendencytowards synchronous flowering in cowpeas is not due to the criticalday-length for flower development being shorter than that forflower initiation, but could be the result of cumulative photoperiodicinduction of plants and the more rapid development of later-formedflowers. The stability of the florally determined state in terminal and axillary buds of two tobacco cultivars was studied. We used Hicks and Hicks Maryland Mammoth, near-isogenic cultivars of Nicotiana tabacum differing at the recessive maryland mammoth locus which confers short-day behavior. The experimental design consisted of growing plants in short-day conditions and subjecting them to three bioassays in long-day conditions: in vitro culture of apices consisting of meristems and three to four leaf primordia; rooting of buds consisting of meristems and 8 to 12 leaves, leaf primordia, and internodes; and release from apical dominance of axillary buds in situ. Cultured terminal and axillary apices expressed floral determination, indicating that meristems can be florally determined. Two lines of evidence indicate that rooting destabilizes an already acquired florally determined state: cultured apices from both axillary and terminal buds produced fewer nodes after excision than homologous buds which were rooted; and a lower percentage of rooted axillary buds from Hicks Maryland Mammoth plants expressed floral determination than did homologous axillary buds grown out in situ in noninductive conditions. Rooted buds from the two genotypes expressed floral determination at different frequencies, but produced abnormal inflorescences at similar frequencies, indicating that roots and the maryland mammoth allele influence common as well as unique processes associated with floral determination.  相似文献

The effect of floral-bud removal at different stages of developmenton the plant height and on the total number of buds of Petuniawas studied. Continuous removal of all the floral buds 2 d beforeanthesis caused a marked decrease in plant height and also increasedthe total number of floral buds formed thereafter. At otherstages of floral bud development, bud removal had a lesser effecton both phenomena. Moreover, the plants did not respond to budremoval at anthesis. GA3 at 25 ppm applied to plants from which the buds had beenremoved, promoted stem elongation. The most pronounced effectwas on plants from which the buds were removed 2 d before anthesis, but it had no effect on plants from which the buds were removedat anthesis stage. The possible involvement of endogenous growth hormones in theresponse of Petunia plants to floral-bud removal and to applicationof GA3 is discussed. Aims Viola philippica is a species with a typical chasmogamous-cleistogamous (CH-CL) mixed breeding system. It provides a flower model system to investigate floral organs development under different photoperiods. Morphological changes of intermediate cleistogamous (inCL) flowers have been observed, the trends in variation of changes from CH flowers to CL flowers or from CL flowers to CH flowers have been analyzed, the localized effects of poorly developed stamens and petals in CL and inCL flowers have been identified. This research provided morphology and structural changes with implication for the evolutionary significance of the dimorphic flower formation for further study in dimorphic flower development. Methods We used methods of anatomy and structural analysis to observe the morphological structures of flowers under different photoperiods.Important findings Photoperiod played an important role in the development of CH and CL flowers in V. philippica. Under short-day light and intermediate-day light, both CH and inCL flowers developed simultaneously. Most of the floral buds were CH flowers under a photoperiod of short-day light, but most of the floral buds were inCL flowers under mid-day light. Complete CL flowers formed under long-day lights. However, there were a series of transitional types in the number and morphology of stamens and petals among inCL flowers, including five stamens with three petals related to CH flowers and two stamens with one petal related to CL flowers. The former type was dominant under short-day light conditions, and the latter type was dominant under mid-day light. Further more, there were localized effects in stamen and petal development for CL and inCL flowers. The development of ventral lower petal (corresponding to the lower petal with spur of CH flower) and the adjacent two stamens in inCL flowers were best, and the back petal was similar to that of CL flowers, an organ primordium structure. The adjacent stamens with the back petals tended to be poorly developed. In extreme cases, these stamens in inCL flowers had no pollen sac, only a membranous appendage or even a primordium structure. When the plants with CL or CH flowers were placed under short-day light or long-day light, the newly induced flowers all showed a series of inCL flower types, finally the CL flowers transformed into CH flowers, and the CH flowers transformed into CL flowers. This result indicates the gradual effects of different photoperiods on dimorphic flowers development of V. philippica. A long photoperiod could inhibit the development of partial stamens and petals, and a short photoperiod could prevent the suppression of long-day light and promote the development of stamens and petals.  相似文献

Plants of Corchorus olitorius, a short-day plant, were subjectedto varying numbers of short-day cycles before transfer to longdays. Treatments started after germination of the seeds at thetime of cotyledon release. Four short-day cycles (10 h naturaldaylight followed by 14 h darkness) were sufficient to induceflowering in all plants. The number of flowers and fruits producedon a plant increased as the number of short-day cycles was increasedfrom three to 30. Plants given three to seven short-day cyclesproduced flowers on the main stem only but when plants weremaintained in short days for longer periods, flowers were alsoproduced on the branches. The growth in d. wt of fruits wasgreatest when plants were maintained in short days throughout. Corchorus olitorius L., flowering, fruit development, photoperiodism  相似文献

Apical buds of Xanthium were grown in aseptic culture under short-day cycles known to induce flowering in the intact plants or under “light-break” conditions known to prevent flowering. The total light provided in each 24-hr cycle was the same under the two photoperiods. Various numbers of leaves were excised from the apical buds. Excision of leaves did not change the response to photoperiod: even with all leaves excised the apical buds cultured under short-day conditions reached the same average floral stage as the control buds, and those under light-break conditions all remained vegetative. Fresh weight was not significantly changed by the excisions, either. However, excision of the young leaves resulted in an increase in the number of new leaves developed by the apical bud during the two-week culture period.  相似文献

The flowering response of thin layers excised from branch internodes of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Maryland Catterton (quantitative short-day plant for induction) was studied under three photoperiodic treatments. The explants were excised from inflorescences bearing flowers only, flowers and green fruits, or from infructescences with green fruits only. The aim of the study was to investigate the post-inductive photoperiodic effects on in vitro flower bud formation in a quantitative short-day tobacco and the relation with infructescence development. Short days quantitatively enhanced the flower bud regeneration capacities of explants in all stages of development, both as number of explants induced to produce flowers and as mean number of flowers per explant. There was no significant difference in flower bud formation on explants of the first two stages, which produced much more flowers than those of the third stage. Observations in planta showed that, during the 20 days separating the second stage from the first stage, there was no significant difference in the number of floral buds and flowers present on the inflorescence; however, the branch internodes lengthened, as did the floral buds and flowers. During the 10 days leading to the third stage, the number of capsules did not change significantly, but a high rate of floral abscission occurred. The present results show that in Nicotiana tabacum cv. Maryland Catterton short day quantitatively controls not only the inductive step of the flowering process, but also affects the capacity to regenerate flower buds during the late post-inductive phases. The responsiveness to the photoperiodic signal decreases only when the plant exhibits only fruits.  相似文献

Plants of Lamium amplexicaule, grown under short-day field conditionsin Northern California produce predominantly closed flowers.Under long-day field conditions, plants may produce up to 50per cent open flowers, the same total number of flowers beingproduced under each daylength regime. A 20 ml drop of GA3 or GA7 (100µM) was applied to themain shoot apex of plants growing under short-day conditions, and all subsequently produced flowers opened. CCC, an inhibitorof gibberellin synthesis, was applied (0.06 per cent) to thesoil of seedlings grown under long-day conditions. The CCC-treatedplants were dwarfed and bore only closed flowers. With GA7 appliedexogenously to the CCC-treated shoots, inhibition was released, resulting in elongated internodes and open flower production. The timing of flower production and internodal extension inLamium amplexicaule are positively correlated. When floral primordiawere removed from main shoots, the average internode lengthsdecreased. The number of nodes produced in treated plants wasincreased as a result of flower removal. Exogenous GA7 (10 µM)applied to the nodes from which flowers were removed resultedin internodal extension but had no effect on node number. Twoprocesses that may contribute to the control of the productionof open and closed flowers in Lamium amplexicaule are: (1) anincreasing anther sac size from lower to upper node flowersthat may exert control locally, via GN production, on corollaexpansion, and (2) a photoperiodic control. The photoperiodic requirement for flowering in Impatiens balsaminachanges with the length of the photoperiod. Floral buds wereinitiated with two 8 hr but with four 15 hr photoperiods andflowers opened with four 8 hr but twenty-eight 15 hr photoperiods.A part of the photoperiodic requirement for floral inductionin this plant can be substituted by LDs containing 4 or morehours of darkness (10). It indicates the identical nature ofthe floral stimulus produced during the dark period, whetherit forms a part of the inductive or non-inductive cycles. Theeffect of these supplementary non-inductive photoperiodic cyclesin causing floral bud initiation also depends on the lengthof the first inductive obligatory cycle. More floral buds andflowers were produced on plants exposed to 15 hr than 8 hr photoperiods, probably due to the higher number of leaves that were producedunder the former condition of weaker induction. The shorterthe dark period in the photoperiodic cycle, the weaker the induction, the slower the rate of extension growth but the more differentiationof leaves. 1 Present address: Department of Biology, Guru Nanak Dev University,Amritsar-143005, India. Plants of Impatiens balsamina L. grown under long days were divided into 5 lots to receive 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 consecutive short day (SD) cycles respectively. Each lot was divided into 5 groups to receive 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 long day (LD) cycles subsequent to SD regime and the cycles were repeated till the end. Observations on the number, position and time of emergence of floral buds, flowers and extension growth were recorded. The floral buds are initiated and these develop into flowers even when Individual SDs are intercalated with 16 LD cycles, showing that the sub-threshold stimulus is not wiped off but becomes effectively summated through a long non-inductive period. The floral bud initiation in lots receiving less than 4 and flowering in those receiving less than 8 consecutive SD cycles are delayed with decreasing number of consecutive SDs and increasing number of intercalating LDs. This progressive delay is probably due to the delay that is caused by these treatments in the completion of requisite number of SD cycles. The first node to show floral bud initiation is shifted up with increasing intercalated LDs only in plants receiving less than 4 SD cycles and not in those receiving more. Some of the lower floral buds in plants receiving less than 8 consecutive SD cycles either abort or revert to vegetative growth. The first node to flower is, therefore, shifted up. The number of such buds increases either with a decrease in the number of consecutive SDs or an increase in the number of intercalated LDs. The number of floral buds produced in plants receiving 2 or more and flowers in those receiving 4 or more consecutive SD cycles does not differ much with the number of intercalated LDs, but decreases in those receiving less number of SDs. Some nodes bear more than one floral bud and flower. Such nodes are observed in plants receiving individual SD cycles only when intercalated with individual LDs but in all groups in plants receiving 16 consecutive SD cycles. The rate of extension growth increases with an increase in the number of consecutive SDs. The rate in plants receiving individual SDs closely resembles that of plants grown under continuous LDs and that of consecutive 16 SDs with that of control SD plants. The attainment of maximum and the consequent steep fall preceding senescence is successively delayed with an increase in the number of intercalated LDs in plants receiving 16 consecutive SD cycles. Light interruption of the dark period inhibits both the initiation of floral buds and their development Into flowers. showing that in this plant. short days are necessary both for the initiation of floral buds and their development into flowers.  相似文献

The response in vitro of thin cell layers, excised from different stem regions of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Maryland Mammoth plants at various developmental stages, was studied under different photoperiodic treatments. The aim was to determine at which stage of plant development, and in which region of the stem, the absolute short-day requirement, indispensable for the induction of the flowering process in this genotype, becomes quantitative and whether it remains short-day. The explants were cultured on a medium suitable for flower neoformation, and were exposed for 30 days to the following treatments: continuous darkness, 8 h light/16 h dark per day, 16 h light/8 h dark per day, and continuous light. The first flowers on explants were observed from plants that were still in the vegetative state, but whose apex showed an accelerated production of axillary vegetative buds, as observed histologically. These explants were excised from the first 10 internodes below the first node with a leaf ≥ 5 cm in length (apical site), and produced flowers only under short-day treatment. When the apical dome initiated the organization of the terminal flower, the apical site explants developed flowers under both short-day and long-day treatments. At the same stage, explants from the 15th to the 20th internode below the first leaf ≥ 5 cm in length also formed flowers, but only under short-day. When the plant showed a complete inflorescence, flowers were also present on explants from the most basal stem internodes and from the inflorescence branches. At this stage, flower neoformation occurred under all treatments; however, under short-day the number of explants showing flowers not associated with vegetative buds on the same sample greatly exceeded that observed under other treatments, as did the mean number of flowers per explant (except the basal regions). In conclusion, in the post-inductive phases of the flowering process, the photoperiodic requirement of this genotype is always short-day. The superficial tissues of the stem require either absolute or quantitative short-day treatment, depending on their position on the stem and the stage of evolution of the flowering process in the terminal apex.  相似文献

Seedling-cuttings of Pharbitis nil, a typical short-day plant, initiated floral buds under continuous light of 2200–2400lux at 24–26?C. When cultured under poor-nutritional conditions, the node bearing the first floral bud was as low as the 4thone. A close relation between floral initiation under continuouslight and retarded vegetative growth was observed. (Received September 28, 1973; )  相似文献
