Trichomycterus itacarambiensis is a troglobitic (cave-restricted) catfish found in the Olhos ďÁgua Cave, Itacarambi Co., Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The cave is subject to a pronounced seasonality, and is flooded during part of the rainy season. The pigmentation degree is variable in T. itacarambiensis , a third of the population being true albinos; the eyes vary from normal to externally invisible. As expected for a cave-dwelling fish, T. itacarambiensis is a carnivorous generalist, which preys mainly on autochthonous insects and earthworms. It is a chemically oriented predator of bottom and surface animals, using foraging tactics also used by other cave catfishes, such as the pimelodids Pimelodella kronei and Imparfinis sp. However, bottom feeding seems to be more important for T. itacarambiensis than for the latter. There is a severe feeding stress during the dry season, when few individuals are able to get food. Reproduction is seasonal, with increased reproductive activity at the end of the rainy period, as recorded for Imparfinis sp., also a species living in a semi-arid region with a well-defined dry season. It is estimated that up to 50% of the female T. itacarambiensis can reproduce every year, a high proportion for a troglobitic fish species. At least during the study period, pigmented individuals reproduced more frequently than the albinos.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The tendency of larvae of Chyranda centralis to mark themselves by adding coloured plastic segments to their cases was used to study instream movements of the species. Plastic strips of different colours were placed at measured distances down a small spring stream and larvae cut pieces and incorporated them in their cases.
2. Over 50% of the marked population moved upstream into cooler water prior to pupation in an exceptionally dry year. The greatest distance moved upstream by a single larva was 56.9m, In a wet year, when daytime stream temperatures were cooler, 11–28% of the marked population moved upstream. Downstream movement occurred in both years late in the fifth instar.
3. Larvae selected yellow in preference to other colours in laboratory tests and they preferred heavy, textured plastic to light, smooth plastic as they neared pupation.
4. Upstream movements, found also in Desmana bethula (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae) in the same spring stream, may be an adaptation for avoiding pupation in areas of high temperature, low oxygen concentration, or intermittent flow.  相似文献

  • 1 Radio‐telemetry and mark‐recapture methods were used to study the summer movements of adult and juvenile white‐clawed crayfish, Austropotamobius pallipes from a wild population in a small braided stream, Dalton Beck, North Yorkshire, U.K. Radio‐transmitters were attached to the chelae of 18 large (> 35 mm carapace length) crayfish and individuals were subsequently located to within 0.15 m. Additionally a total of 888 crayfish were marked with carapace brands, and 83 were recaptured.
  • 2 Radio‐tracked crayfish exhibited significantly greater local activity at dusk (21.00–00.00) than at dawn (03.00–06.00), or during morning (09.00–12.00) and afternoon (15.00–18.00) monitoring periods.
  • 3 The greatest movements of radio‐tracked crayfish occurred within 2 days of release. After this time, periods of residence were interspersed by movements to new locations, interpreted as establishment of ephemeral home areas. It is suggested that the initial large movements were the result of a ‘fright response’ following capture.
  • 4 Movements varied widely between individuals, some moving more than 300 m in 10 days, while others showed little movement over an equivalent time period. Mean (±SE) daily movements were 4.6 ± 3.0 m for males and 1.5 ± 1.0 m for females. Although crayfish often used specific home sites for in excess of 7 days, displaced animals did not return to home sites.
  • 5 The total distances travelled and the mean distance travelled per day by individual radio‐tagged crayfish did not differ significantly between upstream or downstream directions or between males and females. This was also the case for marked crayfish used in mark‐recapture studies.
  • 6 Positive correlations between distance moved per day and size (carapace length) were found for downstream movements by male and female crayfish, but not for upstream movements.
  • 7 Some preliminary observations of the response of crayfish to flood events suggested that these could be catastrophic with two out of five tracked crayfish found dead after a high stream‐discharge event.

A fish‐based Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) was adapted for use in a stream of the heavily impacted Piracicaba River basin in southeastern Brazil. The influences of land use (mainly sugar‐cane crops) and an urban area on the fish community were investigated at ten sites along a 17 km‐long stream during the dry and rainy season. The IBI varied with the season and location along the stream, reflecting differences between the agricultural and urban sites, which were more pronounced during the dry season. The final index was positively correlated with a Habitat Quality Index (dry season) but not with a Water Quality Index. The results can be viewed as a tool for assessing and monitoring the ecological health of streams in this watershed. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

1. Over 140 000 larvae of the case-building caddisfly Gumaga nigricula were self-marked as they incorporated glitter into small portions of their cases while reared in streamside troughs. These marked individuals were released into stream pools and their movements monitored in the dry season, when base flow was low and no spates occurred, and in the wet season when base flow was high and several spates occurred. 2. Of the 9,000–10 000 larvae released in each of two stream pools in the dry season, 4–20% (i.e. 377–1817 marked individuals) were observed on three sampling dates (4, 11 and 24 d after release). Most larvae (87–93%) remained within 4 m up- or downstream of the release line after 24 d. No larvae were found outside of the release pools, even after 37 d. 3. Of the > 120 000 larvae released in one stream pool near the beginning of the wet season, 408 larvae were recaptured 130–167 d later, a period that included 30 days of high flow associated with six spates. Estimated survivorship over this period was 0.7–6.2%; there was no relationship between survival and larval size at release. Most (75%) recaptured larvae were found in the pool where they were originally released. The remaining larvae were found downstream of the release pool. Larvae had generally dispersed only a short distance downstream of the release pool (median = 18 m, maximum = 222 m). In addition, four marked pupae were later found 436 m downstream of the release pool. 4. These results illustrate the sedentary nature of larval G. nigricula as well as the important role that high flow events play in larval mortality and dispersal. These case-building larvae move very little during low flow periods, even when food resources appear limiting. In contrast, the frequency and distance of larval dispersal are much greater during periods with high flow. 5. Our observations for G. nigricula support previously published inferences that larval dispersal within a stream can be limited for some aquatic insects. However, our observations also suggest that, even for a relatively sedentary species like G. nigricula, larval dispersal during periods with high flow may contribute significantly to gene flow within a stream reach.  相似文献

A mark‐recapture study was conducted in 1997–2005 to investigate movements of stocked pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, in the Paraná River Basin of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Fish raised in cages within the Itaipu Reservoir and in ponds were tagged externally (n = 2976) and released in the Itaipu Reservoir (53.2%) and bays of its major tributaries (46.8%). In total, 367 fish (12.3%) were recaptured. In all, 91% of the pacu moved away from the release site; upstream movements were more extensive than downstream movements. Pacu traveled upstream a maximum of 422 km (average of 41.3 km) at a maximum rate of 26.4 km day−1 (av. 0.8). Downstream movements were limited in terms of number of individuals and distance moved. Fish released during the wet season moved farther than those released during the dry season, and feeding rather than spawning might have been the compelling reason for movement. Although fish passed downstream through dams, none of the marked fish were detected to have moved upstream through the passage facilities. Pacu showed movement patterns not radically different from those of other neotropical migratory species, but their migratory movements may not be as extensive as those of other large migratory species in the basin.  相似文献

Frugivorous primates in the family Lemuridae, the largest seed dispersers in Madagascar, often modify their behavior dramatically to cope with seasonal fluctuations in food availability and climate. Such behavioral strategies influence seed dispersal distances and seed shadows, which determine seed fate, gene flow, and the geographical range expansion of plant populations. To examine seasonal variation in seed shadows generated by the common brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus), I combined data on movements of a wild group of lemurs in northwestern Madagascar from full-day observations made twice weekly for 1 year and full-night observations made once a fortnight during the dry season, with gut passage times for three captive individuals in a Malagasy zoo. During the rainy season, brown lemurs increased traveling effort (mean daily path lengths: 1172?±?SE 59 m), adopting a high-cost/high-yield foraging strategy to maximize harvest under periods of fruit abundance; this resulted in long seed dispersal distances (median: 170?±?MAD 77 m). During the dry season, daily path lengths (mean: 469?±?SE 30 m) were shorter owing to midday resting and consumption of water-rich succulent leaves, probably to avoid overheating and dehydration. These behaviors led to short-distance seed dispersal (median: 75?±?MAD 47 m). Although brown lemurs moved nocturnally during the dry season (mean nightly path lengths: 304?±?SE 58 m), nocturnal seed dispersal distances were short (median: 34?±?MAD 21 m). This seasonal variation in seed shadows might cause different population dynamics for rainy- and dry-season-fruiting species of large-seeded plants that depend on brown lemurs for seed dispersal. Additionally, lemur-facilitated seed dispersal distances were shorter than those of large frugivores elsewhere in the world. Therefore, lemur-mediated seed dispersal systems are likely to be vulnerable to forest fragmentation, which can isolate new recruits and prevent gene flow among plant metapopulations.  相似文献

Life-history variations in male and female fluvial sculpins, Cottus nozawae, were studied in a small mountain stream in Hokkaido, Japan, primarily by using capture-mark-recapture methods. At three study areas established along the stream course, the majority of marked sculpins were recaptured in their original location over one or more years, indicating their long-term occupation of each restricted habitat area. Sculpin densities increased toward the upstream habitats, whereas individual growth rates were more rapid downstream. In both sexes, sculpins distributed downstream matured at a larger body size and later in life than upstream sculpins, clearly demonstrating a clinal variation in these respects. A comparison of life-history variations in C. nozawae with those in amphidromous C. hangiongensis suggests that intrapopulational life-history variations in the former might be environmentally induced, and that one of the most important determinants for the variations in Cottus species might be population density.  相似文献

Pattern of movements of adult Barbus haasi in a small Mediterranean stream   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Most adult Barbus haasi , at a 1950 m-long site in Vallvidrera creek, were highly sedentary and resided within a home range <20 m (32 m2), while a small group were more mobile. On successive sampling occasions, between 52·3 and 64·9% of fish were recaptured in the same 10-m-long section in which they had previously been captured. Movements over long distances were infrequent, and only 5·6% of the fish moved >100 m. The movement pattern of the population was seasonally stable, although the mean distances were slightly greater in summer because of the medium-range movements of a few individuals. Overall, upstream and downstream movements were equally common but a significant downstream movement occurred in spring. The size of the fish did not influence the movement rate. Fish inhabiting those sections of the stream with greater depth, slower current and more cover had a lower movement rate than fish occupying shallower, exposed sections. The restricted movement of B. haasi could increase the survival of fish by increasing the probability of staying in the remaining pools during summer dry-out, and may therefore be of adaptive significance.  相似文献

1. Crayfish are amongst the most frequently introduced non‐native aquatic organisms, with well‐documented negative effects on a large number of freshwater taxa. Many crayfish‐control strategies make use of manual removal by trapping, a method known preferentially to remove the largest individuals, leaving the juvenile population almost entirely untrapped. 2. A predicted outcome of trapping bias in riparian habitats is that removed individuals could be replaced by large crayfish immigrating from surrounding, untrapped, areas. We tested the hypothesis that removal by trapping of American signal crayfish from a U.K. river would result in increased rates of immigration, and increased distances moved, of crayfish from untrapped areas. 3. We studied four stretches of the River Windrush each 1 km in length and divided into three sections; a 250‐m long upstream section, a 500‐m middle section and a 250‐m downstream section. At two sites (removal sites), signal crayfish were trapped and removed from the 500‐m middle sections; at the other two (non‐removal), they were marked and returned. All crayfish captured in the upstream and downstream sections were marked and returned. 4. Probability of capture was higher for larger individuals with both chelae intact, and larger crayfish were more likely to immigrate from the upstream and downstream sections into the middle. The percentage of captured crayfish immigrating into the middle sections was the same (3.7%) in both removal and non‐removal sites. However, the mean distance that crayfish moved when immigrating was significantly greater at removal sites (239 m) than at non‐removal sites (187 m). 5. These results imply that removal of large individuals may have reduced the potential for interference competition by increasing the relative competitiveness of the immigrating individuals and permitting them to make larger movements. Consequently, the impact of manual removal strategies, both on the signal crayfish population and other biota affected by them, is likely to be reduced at the point of removal, but to extend at least 200 m beyond the trapped length of river.  相似文献

To estimate the range of area that is affected by sulfuric acid pollution after pyrite oxidation, the surface water chemistry of two rivers in peat swamp forests in central Kalimantan, Indonesia, was surveyed at 1.0- to 3.0-km intervals in September 2003 and 2004 (dry season) and March 2004 and 2005 (rainy season). Water discharged from canals into the main stream of the Sebangau River and the Kahayan River showed lower pH compared to the mainstream water of the rivers, implying sulfuric acid loading from the canal to the main stream of the rivers. The ratio of concentrations of sulfate ion/chloride ion, which was used as a parameter for estimating the contribution of pyritic sulfate to river water chemistry, showed that sulfuric acid loading from pyrite oxidation occurred from the river mouth up to 150 km upstream in both rivers. Water of the main stream of the rivers as well as water discharged from artificial canals into the main stream in the rainy season showed much higher acidity and a higher ratio of sulfate ion/chloride ion than that in the dry season. This result implies that the discharge of pyritic sulfate from peat swamp forests to the limnological system is much higher in the rainy (high water table) season than the dry (low water table) season. Water in the canal in the rainy season was found to be highly acidic (pH = 2.0–3.0). Pyrite oxidation after peatland development causes not only acidification of soil but also acidification of the limnological ecosystem.  相似文献

We describe the home range and movements of a population of Kinosternon integrum in Tonatico, Estado de México, México, over 3.5 years (during rainy and dry season months) using radiotelemetry in 37 adult turtles. The results showed that the home range of K. integrum was 0.151 ± 0.051 ha using 50% kernel density estimator (KDE), and 0.657 ± 0.214 ha using 95% KDE; the home range did not vary between sexes. Kinosternon integrum showed low distances traveled 51.44 ± 4.50 m, where 87.3% (n = 373) of movements were <100 m. The distance traveled differed by season, and movement category (aquatic and terrestrial movements). The shortest distance occurred during the dry season, during which some individuals move to estivation sites, and these movements were shorter than movements to artificial ponds (cattle ponds). In this population, home range and movement are similar to other species of the genus Kinosternon. Overall, the results indicate than K. integrum are highly dependent on aquatic habitats, but also utilize the terrestrial habitats for different biological activities, and to maintain viable populations. Therefore, the conservation of the entire inhabited area is fundamental. This study highlights the need to increase the studies, in Central México, concerning habitat use of freshwater turtles in order to increase the efficiency of conservation strategies.  相似文献

Population ecology of the troglobitic armored catfish, A. cryptophthalmus, from caves in São Domingos karst area of central Brazil, was studied in a two-census capture-mark-recapture study carried out during the dry season of 1999. Like many loricariids, including epigean Ancistrus catfishes from that area, A. cryptophthalmus is a typical bottom-dweller with a strong preference for rocky substrates in fast-flowing stream sectors. Relatively high population densities, when compared to other cavefishes, were recorded in the studied cave sections: 0.9 individuals m–2 in Angélica Cave and 0.5 individuals m–2 in Passa Três Cave. Passa Três Stream is a small tributary of the São Vicente Cave system, and the estimated population for Passa Três Cave (ca. 2000 m long) is around 1000 individuals. On the other hand, the large Angélica Cave Stream (8 km long) harbors a very large population, conservatively estimated at 20 000 individuals. No fish movements of distances longer than 100 m were recorded in the 40-day period. In Passa Três Cave, a few movements of distances up to 60 m were detected. Proportion of mature females in Angélica Cave was higher than in Passa Três Cave, possibly reflecting a greater food availability in the first cave. Mean individual growth rates in Angélica Cave (1.35 mm month–1 for size class <41 mm SL, 0.17 mm month–1 for size class >41 mm SL) point to relatively high longevities, possibly attaining 15 years.  相似文献

Radio-telemetry was used to study the late autumn and winter movements of twenty adult signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus (32.9–63.8 mm carapace length) an introduced exotic crayfish species, in the upland River Wharfe, northern England. The distances moved during the study varied greatly between individuals (0–328 m). Movements were generally sporadic; crayfish would remain in one position for several weeks and make occasional movements to new locations. Total distances travelled, linear range and ranging area did not differ significantly between males and females. The distance travelled in upstream and downstream directions did not differ significantly and there was no correlation between distance travelled and crayfish size. Several high flow events occurred during the study, but these did not cause any mortality or apparent displacement of crayfish downstream, suggesting that this is not a significant factor in downstream dispersal or mortality of adults of this invasive crayfish species in winter. A marked reduction in large-scale movements occurred in mid-December which coincided with a decline in water temperature. There was a less distinct pattern in local activity which was strongly correlated with water temperature and varied before and after mid-December.  相似文献

1. The effects of seasonal inundation on the biology of fishes on floodplains of large Amazonian rivers are well studied. However, the small seasonal changes in headwater streams are generally considered to have little effect on fish assemblages. 2. In this study, we analysed seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of fish in small Amazonian forest streams. We sampled fish with hand and seine nets in headwater streams in a 10 000 ha terra‐firme forest reserve near Manaus, Brazil. Each stream was surveyed at the end of the 2005 dry season, at the beginning of the 2006 rainy season and at the beginning of the 2006 dry season, by means of a standardized sampling effort. 3. The numbers of individuals and species caught were higher in the dry season, but rarefaction analyses indicated that greater species numbers could have been due simply to the larger number of individuals caught. 4. Between the dry and rainy season, the direction of changes in species composition in multivariate space varied among sites, especially for quantitative (abundance) data. However, the observed variation among sites was the less than expected if the directions of change were random. 5. Fish assemblages in the second dry season were more similar to those in the previous dry season than expected if changes in species composition among seasons were random. This indicates that a general seasonal pattern in fish assemblages can be detected, despite the existence of some erratic site‐specific changes. 6. Most of the species that showed large seasonal variations in density occupy temporary ponds during the rainy season, when much of the valley is inundated and pond networks form adjacent to streams. Short‐duration lateral migrations to these ponds may play an important role in the seasonal fish‐assemblage dynamics in Amazonian headwater streams. 7. Our results contrast with previous studies on small Amazonian streams, which have found little seasonal change in fish assemblages, and highlight the importance of the abundance of common species as an indicator of general fish assemblage structure in biological monitoring programmes.  相似文献

Growth in length, condition, and gonads of a food fish, Dormitator latifrons , were studied in the Chone River basin, Ecuador, in 1981. The river was bordered by floodplains in the upstream freshwater zone, and by mangrove swamps and shrimp farms in the downstream estuarine zone. The climate was marked by wet (January to April) and dry (May to December) seasons. During the dry season, an earth dam in the river prevented movement of water and fish between upstream and downstream zones. At the end of the dry season, most of the upstream floodplains were dry, and the main fish refuges were in downstream areas in deep pools in the river upstream. During the floods, fish migrated from downstream areas towards upstream floodplains. Growth rates and condition increased when water levels were high or salinity was low and decreased when water levels were low or salinity was high. Seasonal changes in gonads and abundance of juveniles indicated that reproduction occurred during the floods, but there was some reproduction in the dry season. Reproduction occurred in upstream and downstream zones and appeared to be stimulated by a complex of factors, including water levels, currents and salinity. The yield in flood plain sites was estimated as c. 115 kg ha−1 in 1981.  相似文献

1. This paper examines the distribution, habitat relationships, and potential for spread of non‐native signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in streams of the Truckee River catchment, California, U.S.A. Crayfish associations with natural features and with impoundments and flow alteration were examined in a survey of 33 streams. Abundance changes were followed over 5 years, which included some of the highest and lowest flows on record, in three streams, two unregulated and one regulated. Movement of marked crayfish was studied in one 0.5 km stream reach just upstream from a reservoir. 2. Signal crayfish were most abundant in low‐gradient streams and were positively associated with proximity to reservoirs (both upstream and downstream). Crayfish were more likely to be found in regulated than unregulated sites, and did not occur in sites upstream of barriers, such as culverts, that separated them from reservoirs or lakes. 3. Crayfish declined in abundance in years following particularly intense and prolonged wet‐season spates, leading to a negative association between crayfish abundance and both peak discharge and duration of bankfull flows. 4. Crayfish moved distances of up to 277 m, and at rates of up to 120 m day?1, suggesting significant dispersal ability. Larger crayfish moved greater distances and were more likely to move downstream. Female crayfish showed a pattern of upstream movement in early summer and downstream movement late in the summer, opposite the pattern found in two other studies. 5. These results suggest that natural or artificial gradient barriers and, in regulated systems, management of flow regimes to include bankfull or greater flows may help to control invasive crayfish in streams.  相似文献

The behavior of endangered adult Sakhalin taimen Parahucho perryi was tracked during 2008–2010 using acoustic telemetry in the Bekanbeushi River system, which flows through eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Movement distances per unit time of tracked P. perryi were compared between mid- and downstream habitats. Results indicated that movement distances were significantly longer in downstream habitats during all seasons. The movement distances in each stream decreased from spring to autumn. Moreover, tracked P. perryi exhibited crepuscular movement patterns; however, patterns were less pronounced in downstream habitats than in up- and midstream habitats. These findings strongly suggested that adult P. perryi exhibit nearly distinctive movement patterns across stream habitats; thus, fish may adopt different foraging tactics in each stream habitat. Fish moved more frequently in spring, which included the post-wintering and post-spawning season, most likely to search for food and more desirable habitat for recovery.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A population of Calopteryx aequabilis Say was sampled daily on a tributary of Canard River, Kings County, Nova Scotia, for the entire flight season in 1983 (29 May to 13 August), using capture–mark–recapture techniques.
2. 2701 sightings of 678 individuals were obtained along a 635 m segment of the stream. A maximum daily count of 174 imagines was reached on 11 June, after which the population gradually declined.
3. More females than males were marked but sexually mature males outnumbered females at the water on all but four days.
4. Immigration rather than local emergence accounted for a large proportion of the population after 20 June.
5. Females were consistently vagile; males were site–specific but occasionally moved long distances between captures.
6. Males and females first marked as tenerals became reproductively mature after about 5 days.
7. We experimentally increased female density on a partially isolated section of the study stream to see how increased female numbers affected the demographics and movement patterns of the population.
8. Residence times for introduced and resident females were similar. In contrast, during a similar introduction of males a year earlier, most introduced males disappeared quickly.
9. Males decreased the distance they travelled daily between captures, their total distance travelled and their range following the introduction, and females showed a tendency (not statistically significant) toward increased movements and dispersal, as predicted.  相似文献

Individual movements and population size of the amphidromous sculpinCottus hangiongensis, excluding young-of-the-year smaller than 50 mm in body length, were studied from October 1983 to December 1984 in 5 separate sections of the Daitobetsu River of southern Hokkaido, by using mark-recapture methods. During the non-breeding season, distinct inclinations in density, body length distribution and sex ratio ofC. hangiongensis populations were found along the course of the river. The population density was the highest, 3.45 per m2, in the lowest section and decreased in the upper sections. Larger males were found in larger numbers toward the lower reaches, whereas the sex ratio, which was biased in favor of females, was generally more striking upstream. These characteristics of the population structure may result from the amphidromous life history and the polygynous mating system of this species. Many marked fish were recaptured within the original sections, where they had been marked and released, throughout the year. During the non-breeding season, especially, the mean movement was 40.6 m, with the greatest movement being 92 m. During the breeding season, on the other hand, some sculpins appeared to move downstream before spawning and upstream after spawning. Such downstream spawning migration may increase the chance of encountering a mate, and for females it may enhance the chance of encountering larger males. Moreover, it may also contribute to a decrease in the mortality rate of their flowing larvae.  相似文献
