The scarcity of records of Early Paleocene radiolarians has meant that while radiolarian biostratigraphy is firmly established as an important tool for correlation, there has been a long-standing gap between established zonations for the Cretaceous and from latest Paleocene to Recent. It has also led to considerable speculation over the level of faunal change across the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary. Consequently, the discovery of rich and diverse radiolarian assemblages in well-delineated K/T boundary sections within siliceous limestones of the Amuri Limestone Group in eastern Marlborough, New Zealand, is of great significance for biostratigraphy and K/T boundary research.This initial report is restricted to introducing a new latest Cretaceous to mid Late Paleocene zonation based on the radiolarian succession at four of these sections and a re-examination of faunas from coeval sediments at DSDP Site 208 (Lord Howe Rise). Three new Paleocene species are described:Amphisphaera aotea, Amphisphaera kina andStichomitra wero. Six new interval zones are defined by the first appearances of the nominate species. In ascending order these are:Lithomelissa? hoplites Foreman (Zone RK9, Cretaceous),Amphisphaera aotea n. sp. (Zone RP1, Paleocene),Amphisphaera kina n. sp. (RP2),Stichomitra granulata Petrushevskaya (RP3),Buryella foremanae Petrushevskaya (RP4) andBuryella tetradica (RP5). Good age control from foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils permits close correlation with established microfossil zonations. Where age control is less reliable, radiolarian events are used to substantially improve correlation between the sections.No evidence is found for mass extinction of radiolarians at the end of the Cretaceous. However, the K/T boundary does mark a change from nassellarian to spumellarian dominance, due to a sudden influx of actinommids, which effectively reduces the relative abundance of many Cretaceous survivors. An accompanying influx of diatoms in the basal Paleocene of Marlborough, together with evidence for an increase of total radiolarian abundance, suggests siliceous plankton productivity increased across the K/T boundary. Possible causes for this apparently localised phenomenon are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The global warming trend of the latest Oligocene was interrupted by several cooling events associated with Antarctic glaciations. These cooling events affected surface water productivity and plankton assemblages. Well-preserved radiolarians were obtained from upper Oligocene to lower Miocene sediments at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199 Sites 1218 and 1219 in the equatorial Pacific, and 110 radiolarian species were identified.Four episodes of significant radiolarian faunal changes were identified: middle late Oligocene (27.5 to 27.3 Ma), latest Oligocene (24.4 Ma), earliest Miocene (23.3 Ma), and middle early Miocene (21.6 Ma). These four episodes approximately coincide with increases and decreases of biogenic silica accumulation rates and increases in δ18O values coded as “Oi” and “Mi” events. These data indicate that Antarctic glaciations were associated with change of siliceous sedimentation patterns and faunal changes in the equatorial Pacific.Radiolarian fauna was divided into three assemblages based on variations in radiolarian productivity, species richness and the composition of dominant species: a late Oligocene assemblage (27.6 to 24.4 Ma), a transitional assemblage (24.4 to 23.3 Ma) and an early Miocene assemblage (23.3 to 21.2 Ma). The late Oligocene assemblage is characterized by relatively high productivity, low species richness and four dominant species of Tholospyris anthophora, Stichocorys subligata, Lophocyrtis nomas and Lithelius spp. The transitional assemblage represents relatively low values of productivity and species richness, and consists of three dominant species of T. anthophora, S. subligata and L. nomas. The characteristics of the early Miocene assemblage are relatively low productivity, but high species richness. The two dominant species present in this assemblage are T. anthophora and Cyrtocapsella tetrapera. The most significant faunal turnover of radiolarians is marked at the boundary between the transitional/early Miocene assemblages.We also reviewed changes in other microfossil assemblages in the low latitudes during the late Oligocene through early Miocene. The microfossil assemblages of major groups show sequential changes near the Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) boundary (23.8 Ma). Many extinction events and some first occurrences of calcareous nannofossils and many occurrences of radiolarians are found from about 24.8 to 23.3 Ma, and first occurrences of planktic foraminifers and diatoms followed from 23.2 through 22 Ma. Hence, the O/M boundary is identified as a significant level for microfossil evolutions.  相似文献

Summary The study of radiolarians collected during sediment trap experiments in the Drake Passage, the northern Powell Basin, and the King George Basin of the Bransfield Strait provides new information on the fluxes of radiolarian shells in Antarctic waters, on the annual flux pattern, the species distribution and its ecological significance, and on alteration processes of the radiolarian shells in the water column and at the sediment/water interface. A 28-month monitoring with time-series sediment traps in the Bransfield Strait indicates an annual flux pattern characterized by short-term flux pulses during austral summer, which reach daily fluxes of up to 5 × 103 shells m–2 and which account for more than 90% of the total annual flux. The distinct seasonal variations are linked to variations in the sea ice coverage. Other controlling factors are the production of phytoplankton and the impact by zooplankton grazers, e.g., krill. During the summer flux pulses the vertical fluxes of radiolarians range between ca. 3 and 21 × 104 shells m–2, values that are one or more orders of magnitudes lower than fluxes observed at sites in the tropical and northern high-latitude ocean. Significant lateral transport of radiolarians was documented during the austral summer in the Bransfield Strait by a factor of 10 increase of the radiolarian flux in the lower portion of the water column and the species composition trapped in deeper waters. Radiolarian assemblages associated with pelagic and neritic environments characterized by typical Antarctic taxa (Antarctissa spp.) and a group of species with bipolar distribution (e.g. Plectacantha oikiskos, Phormacantha hystrix), respectively, are distinguished. While the signal of polycystine radiolarians is relatively well recorded in the sediments, the shells of phaeodarians, which were observed at fluxes of up to 1 × 103 shells m–2day–1 in the upper portion of the water column, are almost completely dissolved during settling through the water column.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of different groups of radiolarians and mesozooplankton (l = 0.2–3.0 mm) and the contribution of radiolarians to total biomass of bathometer-sampled zooplankton were studied in the epipelagic East Pacific Rise and the Gulf of California during 49th cruise of R/V “Akademik Mstislav Keldysh” (September–October, 2003). The production of the symbiotic algae of acantharians and colonial radiolarians as well as their contribution to the total primary production were evaluated. The proportion of all radiolarian groups in the total zooplankton biomass was shown to range from 1.4 to 11.5%. Live (i.e. rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the 0–1 cm layer of multiple core samples were examined at three contrasting sites in the northeast Atlantic as part of the Natural Environment Research Council Deep Ocean Benthic Boundary Layer (BENBO) Thematic Programme. Sites A (3600 m water depth) and C (1900 m) were located in the Rockall Trough while Site B (1100 m) was in the Hatton–Rockall Basin. Wet-sorting sediment residues (>125 m fraction) revealed more abundant (98–190 individuals/10 cm2) and diverse (71–99 species /27 cm2) assemblages than found previously in studies employing dry-sorting techniques. At all three sites, the assemblages were numerically dominated by delicate soft-bodied and agglutinated species, most of which are undescribed. Calcareous taxa formed a relatively small proportion of the assemblages (23% of individuals at Site B, 13% at Site C and 7% at Site A). Conversely, the agglutinated hormosinaceans (mainly Reophax species) became more prominent with increasing depth and accounted for 8% of the assemblage at Site B, 33% at Site C and 51% at Site A. Foraminifera represented 67–81% of the fauna in the samples and greatly outnumbered the metazoans. The assemblage at Site A has similarities with abyssal assemblages, while those at Sites B and C contain characteristic bathyal species. At Site B, Uvigerina peregrina and Melonis barleeanum are abundant, suggesting that there are high organic carbon inputs at this site. Reduced species diversity was observed at Site A following the spring phytodetritus bloom due to the presence of large numbers of juvenile Hoeglundina elegans, although it is not clear whether this species is responding to phytodetritus inputs.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifers in the size-fraction greater than 0.073 mm were studied in 88 Paleocene to Pleistocene samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 525 (Hole 525A, Walvis Ridge, eastern south Atlantic). Clustering of the samples on the basis of the 86 most abundant foraminifers (in total, 331 taxa were identified) allowed separating two major assemblage zones: the Paleocene to Eocene interval, and the Oligocene to Pleistocene interval. Each of these, in turn, were subdivided into three minor subzones as follows: lower upper Paleocene (approx. 62.4 to 57.8 Ma); upper upper Paleocene (56.6 to 56.2 Ma); lower and middle Eocene (55.3 to 46.8 Ma); upper Oligocene to middle Miocene (25.3 to 16 Ma); middle Miocene to Pliocene (15.7 to 4.2 Ma); and lower Pleistocene (0.4 to 0.02 Ma), with only minor differences with the previous zone. Some very abundant taxa span most of the column studies (Bolivina huneri, Cassidulina subglobosa, Eponides bradyi, E. weddellensis, Gavelinella micra, Oridorsalis umbonatus, etc.). Several of the faunal breaks recorded coincide with conspicuous minima in the specific diversity curve, thus suggesting that the corresponding turnovers signal the final stages of periods of faunal impoverishment. At least one major bottom-water temperature drop (as derived from δ18O data) is synchronous with a decrease in the foraminiferal specific diversity. On the other hand, a specific diversity maximum in the middle Miocene might be associated with a δ13C increase at approx. 16 to 12 Ma. Highest foraminiferal abundances (up to 600–800 individuals per gram of dry sediment) occurred in the late Paleocene and in the early Pleistocene, in coincidence with the lowest diversity figures calculated. The magnitude of the most important faunal turnover recorded, between the middle Eocene and the late Oligocene, is magnified in our data set by the large hiatus which separates the middle Eocene from the upper Oligocene sediments. Considerably smaller overturns occurred within the late Paleocene (in coincidence with changes in the specific diversity, absolute abundance of foraminiferal tests, and δ13C), and in the middle Miocene (in coincidence with a specific diversity maximum and a δ13C excursion). New information on the morphology and the stratigraphic ranges of several species is furnished. For all the taxa recorded the number of occurrences, total number of individuals identified and first and last appearances are listed.  相似文献

Estimating past ocean productivity from ocean sediments often gives different results depending on the measurement used. We have examined a suite of paleoproductivity proxies in latest Miocene–Recent sediments from DSDP Site 532 and ODP Site 1084, two deep-sea sections underlying the Benguela Upwelling System off the Atlantic coast of southern Africa. The productivity history of this system has been previously established via organic carbon concentration, diatom floras and alkenone based estimates of surface water temperature, and shows a change from low productivity in the early Pliocene to sustain high productivity in the late Pliocene–Recent. Each of our samples was split and simultaneously analysed for several proxies of ocean productivity, including organic carbon (TOC%), carbonate, abundance of opaline radiolarians, accumulation rate of benthic foraminifera (BFAR); the radiolarian faunal composition indices Upwelling Radiolarian Index (URI) and the Water Depth Ecology index (WADE); other proxies for opal and carbonate dissolution, plus stable isotopes of benthic foraminifera. Comparisons between proxies in the same measured samples, between sites in downcore plots and to the published productivity record for this region suggest that TOC and radiolarian faunal composition, particularly the WADE index, are good indicators of past productivity, albeit with different sensitivities (log–linear correlation WADE–TOC% r = 0.78, n = 65, p < 0.01). In contrast, carbonate, and carbonate-based proxies such as BFAR primarily reflect changes in dissolution. Radiolarian faunal composition indices do not appear to be affected by bulk opal accumulation or changes in opal preservation. WADE analysis of radiolarian faunas and TOC% measurements appear to be useful proxies for productivity in late Neogene sediments, particularly for sections where opal or carbonate dissolution is significant.  相似文献

Recent marine planktonic diatom assemblages from 47 sediment surface samples retrieved from the eastern equatorial Pacific yielded four significant Q-mode factors that are related to surface water properties. They include a northern subtropical (Factor 1), a southern subtropical (Factor 2), a Peru Current (Factor 3) and an eastern Equatorial Pacific (Factor 4) factor.A transfer function (based on 42 surface sediment samples) with a productivity range of 109 to 210 gC m–2 y–1 was defined using the geographic distribution of the northern and southern subtropical assemblages (Factor 1 and 2) and their relation to mapped surface water primary productivity. This transfer function has a standard error of estimate of 11.9 gC m–2 y–1 and it is used to estimate late Pleistocene paleo-productivity changes at ODP Leg 111 Site 677 off Ecuador.The Site 677 samples (usually spaced 10 cm apart and with a linear sedimentation rate of 4.3 cm y–3) were the same samples that were used for stable oxygen/carbon isotopic analysis from planktonic Foraminifera. The well constrained oxygen isotope stratigraphy permitted assignment of accurate ages to downcore samples.The interval between oxygen isotope stages 3 and 9 had variable productivity that is generally higher than present values of 175 gC m–2 y–1 A major decline in paleo-productivity below the present value occurred in stage 9, the early part of stage 8 and in the early and late stage 5.  相似文献

The Ouarsenis Massif belongs to the Algerian Tell domain which is considered as the eastern part of the Maghrebian Tethys former margin. The Cenomanian-Turonian Douar Menkouchi section outcropping in the eastern side of the Ouarsenis massif is composed of marls and laminated limestone alternations, including massive limestone and a biosiliceous bed toward the upper part of the succession. It reveals the presence of well-preserved and diversified radiolarians. In this study, we have identified for the first time in the Algerian domain, age-diagnostic radiolarian assemblages characterizing the Cenomanian-Turonian transition (C/T). The organic-rich laminated beds (black shales) confined to Silvae Zone, Cenomanian in age and underlying a biosiliceous interval, have provided radiolarian assemblages dominated by Pseudodictyomitrae. The successions overlying the biosiliceous interval have provided diversified radiolarian assemblages including Hagiastridae (i,e. Crucella cachensis, Alievium cf. superbum) and abundant Dictymitrae taxa (i,e. Dictyomitra cf. napaensis and Dictyomitra undata) indicating early Turonian age. These marl-limestone alternations are assigned to the Alievium superbum Zone. Considering taphonomic and diagenetic implications on assemblages content, we conclude that organic-rich beds and biosiliceous interval outline the latest Cenomanian. The radiolarian assemblage composition exhibits similarities to microfauna recovered from Bonarelli Horizon in Central Italy. Morphological similarities are also deduced from assemblages containing Pseudodictyomitrae tiara morphotypes (synonym of Pnakasekoi) which resemble those recovered from ophiolitic intervals in Cyprus and Oman areas.  相似文献

A preliminary study of the paleobiogeographic patterns of radiolarian facies during the Paleogene and subsequent time shows that:(1) Through time radiolarian assemblages display distinct faunal provincialism reminiscent of modern faunal distributions correlated with planetary temperature gradients and surface oceanic conditions. The equatorial—tropical radiolarian fauna extended apparently unrestricted across the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean through Early Miocene time. In the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, radiolarians reached their maximum abundance in the Eocene and Oligocene. Subsequently, they gradually declined to virtual disappearance in these areas in the early Miocene. Their Pacific counterparts remained practically undisturbed, except that post early Miocene assemblages there showed a marked trend toward decreasing test thickness. This trend has since been a worldwide characteristic of Neogene radiolarian assemblages and their modern equivalents. It is postulated that the disappearance of radiolarians in the Carribean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean at the end of the Paleogene is related to the onset of the emergence of the isthmus of Panama which interrupted the preexisting oceanic circulation between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.(2) Throughout the Paleogene there have been marked sequential fluctuations in the radiolarian assemblages of the Caribbean Sea which indicate intermittent incursions of higher-latitude fauna in this area. Associated with the faunal fluctuations are cyclic variations in the total carbonate of the sediment with patterns also comparable in duration to Pleistocene carbonate cycles in the equatorial Pacific known to have been induced by climatic changes. Based on similarities with Pleistocene climatic cycles in the equatorial Pacific and elsewhere, it is surmised that the faunal and lithologic fluctuations observed in Paleogene radiolarian sediments were also induced by the biologic and physico-chemical processes associated with worldwide changes in the climatic conditions of that time.  相似文献

Deep-sea benthic foraminifera show important but transient assemblage changes at the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, when many biota suffered severe extinction. We quantitatively analyzed benthic foraminiferal assemblages from lower bathyal–upper abyssal (1500–2000 m) northwest Pacific ODP Site 1210 (Shatsky Rise) and compared the results with published data on assemblages at lower bathyal (~ 1500 m) Pacific DSDP Site 465 (Hess Rise) to gain insight in paleoecological and paleoenvironmental changes at that time.At both sites, diversity and heterogeneity rapidly decreased across the K/Pg boundary, then recovered. Species assemblages at both sites show a similar pattern of turnover from the uppermost Maastrichtian into the lowermost Danian: 1) The relative abundance of buliminids (indicative of a generally high food supply) increases towards the uppermost Cretaceous, and peaks rapidly just above the K/Pg boundary, coeval with a peak in benthic foraminiferal accumulation rate (BFAR), a proxy for food supply. 2) A peak in relative abundance of Stensioeina beccariiformis, a cosmopolitan form generally more common at the middle than at the lower bathyal sites, occurs just above the buliminid peak. 3) The relative abundance of Nuttallides truempyi, a more oligotrophic form, decreases at the boundary, then increases above the peak in Stensioeina beccariiformis. The food supply to the deep sea in the Pacific Ocean thus apparently increased rather than decreased in the earliest Danian. The low benthic diversity during a time of high food supply indicates a stressed environment. This stress might have been caused by reorganization of the planktic ecosystem: primary producer niches vacated by the mass extinction of calcifying nannoplankton may have been rapidly (<10 kyr) filled by other, possibly opportunistic, primary producers, leading to delivery of another type of food, and/or irregular food delivery through a succession of opportunistic blooms.The deep-sea benthic foraminiferal data thus are in strong disagreement with the widely accepted hypothesis that the global deep-sea floor became severely food-depleted following the K/Pg extinction due to the mass extinction of primary producers (“Strangelove Ocean Model”) or to the collapse of the biotic pump (“Living Ocean Model”).  相似文献

Oxygen and carbon isotopes of foraminifera were analyzed in core PC4, water depth 1366 m, off northern Japan, near the east side of the Tsugaru Strait (130 m depth) between the open northwestern Pacific Ocean and the Japan Sea. At present, the site is at the confluence of the Tsugaru Warm Current which flows eastwards out of the Sea of Japan through the Tsugaru Strait, the subarctic Oyashio Current and the subtropic Kuroshio Current. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the Oyashio Current penetrated further to the South and outflow from the Japan Sea was restricted by glacio-eustatic sea level lowering.The isotopic values of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) and the benthic foraminifer Uvigerina akitaensis reflect rapid millennial-scale paleoceanographic changes between 34 and 6 ka. Hydrographic changes during deglaciation were related to events at high northern latitudes, but Holocene hydrographic changes were dominated by local effects, such as the development of the outflow of the Tsugaru Warm Current. High values of planktic δ18O during the LGM reflect the southward advance of the Oyashio Current. These values decreased by 0.3‰ from 19.4 to 18.9 ka, then increased by 0.5‰ at 18 ka, with highest values between 17.5 and 15 ka. The δ18O oscillations between 19.4 and 15 ka may reflect millennial-scale warm–cold oscillations during Heinrich event 1. Planktic microfossil data indicate that cold Oyashio waters flowed from the northwestern Pacific into the Japan Sea via the Tsugaru Strait between 17 and 16 ka, consistent with the occurrence of the highest planktic δ18O values in core PC4. Planktic δ18O values rapidly decreased by 0.9‰ at 15 ka, possibly reflecting the effects of both a rapid increase in fresh water flux and rising temperatures in the subarctic North Pacific. During the Younger Dryas, cold event planktic δ18O values increased by 0.5‰, followed by a gradual decrease by 1‰ from the early to middle Holocene, reflecting a gradual increase in eastward outflow via the Tsugaru Strait with sea level rise. Both planktic and benthic foraminiferal δ13C values oscillated between 34 and 10 ka, at relatively large amplitudes (about 0.5‰), then remained relatively stable during the last 10 kyr. Several negative planktic and benthic ( − 0.7‰) δ13C excursions were present in sediment dated between the precipitation of secondary carbonates during episodic methane release possibly associated with methane release from continental margin sediments.  相似文献

In Aalenian times, the South Iberian Palaeomargin was part of the westernmost Tethys Ocean. The Median Subbetic palaeogeographic domain of the Betic Cordillera was a relatively deep trough in the South Iberian Palaeomargin during the Early Jurassic–Late Cretaceous interval, where mainly pelagic and hemipelagic limestones and marls were deposited. A semiquantitative study of nannofossil assemblages was performed in sediments from the upper Toarcian–lowest Bajocian from two Median Subbetic sections (Agua Larga and Cerro de Mahoma). Nannofossil assemblages are composed mainly of cosmopolitan and Tethyan taxa. The NJ8a, NJ8b and NJ9 Zones as well as other useful biohorizons (FOs of Triscutum tiziense and Carinolithus magharensis and LO of Similiscutum finchii) were identified and directly correlated to ammonite zones. The analysis of the relative abundances of some common to abundant taxa including Biscutum, Carinolithus superbus, Crepidolithus crassus, Lotharingius, Schizosphaerella and Watznaueria display noticeable fluctuations that can be correlated between the two sections. The comparison of these fluctuations with the δ13Ccarb curves and the interpretation of the palaeoecologic significance of some of these taxa provided an outline of the palaeoceanographic trophic regime throughout the interval studied. During the latest Toarcian–Early Aalenian, the high proportions of oligotrophic Schizosphaerella, moderately high proportions of C. crassus and low proportions of eutrophic Biscutum, correlate with low to moderate values in the δ13Ccarb curves. Radiolarians display low abundance throughout this interval. This is interpreted as an interval where mesotrophic to oligotrophic and stable conditions occurred in surface waters. The Middle Aalenian, characterized by high proportions of Schizosphaerella and C. crassus and low proportions of Biscutum, correlates with low values in the δ13Ccarb curves, and was interpreted to correspond to an episode when stable oligotrophic conditions occurred in surface waters. Radiolarians moderately increased throughout this interval. Finally, the Late Aalenian–earliest Bajocian interval, with lower proportions of Schizosphaerella and C. crassus, and higher proportions of Biscutum, also correlates with a significant positive excursion in the δ13Ccarb curve, suggesting a shift from oligo- to eutrophic conditions in surface waters. This change in productivity is also revealed by a conspicuous increase in radiolarian abundance, at the same time as a quasi-complete replacement of Early Jurassic radiolarian fauna took place. The analysis of faunal-flora turnovers reveals a causal link between the global carbon-cycle and the pelagic response. This noticeable faunal-flora change throughout the Late Aalenian–Bajocian can be interpreted as a major biological response to the drastic modification in the western Tethys palaeogeography as consequence of the Atlantic opening, which in turn caused a new pattern in the oceanic circulation.  相似文献

This study presents new evidence of when and how the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) was established in its present form. We analyzed planktic foraminifera, oxygen isotopes, and Mg/Ca ratios in upper Miocene through Pleistocene sediments collected at Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) Site 292. These data were then compared with those reported from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 806. Both drilling sites are located in the western Pacific Ocean. DSDP Site 292 is located in the northern margin of the modern WPWP and ODP Site 806 near the center of the WPWP. Three stages of development in surface-water conditions are identified in the region using planktic foraminferal data. During the initial stage, from 8.5 to 4.4 Ma, Site 806 was overlain by warm surface water but Site 292 was not, as indicated by the differences in faunal compositions and sea-surface temperature (SST) between the two sites. In addition, the vertical thermal gradient at Site 292 was weak during this period, as indicated by the small differences in the δ18O values between Globigerinoides sacculifer and Pulleniatina spp. During stage two, from 4.4 to 3.6 Ma, the SST at Site 292 rapidly increased to 27 °C, but the vertical thermal gradient had not yet be strengthened, as shown by Mg/Ca ratios and the presence of both mixed-layer dwellers and thermocline dwellers. Finally, a warm mixed layer with a high SST ca. 28 °C and a strong vertical thermal gradient were established at Site 292 by 3.6 Ma. This event is marked by the dominance of mixed-layer dwellers, a high and stable SST, and a larger differences in the δ18O values between G. sacculifer and Pulleniatina spp. Thus, evidence of surface-water evolution in the western Pacific suggests that Site 292 came under the influence of the WPWP at 3.6 Ma. The northward expansion of the WPWP from 4.4 to 3.6 Ma and the establishment of the modern WPWP by 3.6 Ma appear to be closely related to the closure of the Indonesian and Central American seaways.  相似文献

In all 29 polycystine radiolarian species were obtained from surface seawater on May 28, 1999, using a plankton-net at one station (Site 990528; 26°37′18″N, 127°47′35″E) approximately 5 km northwest of Okinawa Island, Japan. In most polycystine radiolarians of the orders Nassellarida and Spumellarida symbiotic algae were observed under light microscopy. The light microscopic (LM) images of the symbionts, however, varied in clarity among individuals because of the variations in microanatomy of the host radiolarian cells. On the other hand, epifluorescence microscopic (EFM) observation easily detected and confirmed the existence of the algal symbionts within the host cytoplasm even in radiolarians such as Dictyocoryne truncatum (Ehrenberg) that include algal symbionts in the depth of the cytoplasm. The chloroplasts of the algal symbionts emitted autofluorescence in ultraviolet irradiation and they appeared red. That is, the autofluorescence images of the chloroplasts can be used to recognize the existence of the algal symbionts within the host radiolarians. Moreover, staining of the symbiont cells with 4′,6-diamido-2-phenylindle permitted visualization of the nucleus in the center of the symbiont cell, confirming the existence of living endosymbiotic algae within the polycystine radiolarians. Both the LM and EFM observations of eight polycystine radiolarian species revealed the specific patterns of various host-symbiont associations. (1) The investigated polycystine radiolarians all possess algal symbionts, except for one species, i.e. Dictyocoryne profunda Ehrenberg. (2) The size of the algal symbionts depends on the radiolarian species. The symbionts are largely classified into two types based on the size of their diameters, i.e. about 8–10 μm for the larger group and about 5 μm for the smaller one. (3) The algal symbionts show a variety of locations within the host radiolarian cytoplasm. The types of distribution of algal symbionts may be a useful characteristic for radiolarian taxonomy.  相似文献

We studied the distribution of polycystine radiolarians in the northern South China Sea (SCS) in September 2005 in order to document the relation between radiolarian assemblages and environmental parameters. Vertical plankton tows were collected at depth-intervals from 0 to 250 m at thirteen stations, using a closing net (62 µm mesh). The highest abundance of polycystine radiolarians generally occurred at depths of 0–75 m, i.e., above the chlorophyll-a maximum and thermocline. In contrast, the maximum polycystine abundance occurred below the chlorophyll-a maximum at station E105 (75–150 m), possibly as a result of down-welling of warm waters, and the maximum fell within the chlorophyll-a maximum at station E702, as a result of upwelling of intermediate cold waters.During our sampling period, the southwestern monsoon caused upwelling in the northern SCS (the Taiwan Bank region), as shown by the high abundance of Tetrapyle octacantha, Acanthodesmia vinculata, Cladococcus cervicoris, Octopyle octospinosa, Spongaster tetras, Streblacantha circumtexta and Spongotrochus glacialis. The patterns of distribution and the abundances of the species Botryocyrtis scutum, Pterocorys hertwigii, Collosphaera tuberosa and Didymocyrtis tetrathalamus tetrathalamus suggested that western Equatorial Pacific waters did not yet influence the region at the time of sampling; the first two species were dominant in the northern SCS during our sampling. The species Cornutella profunda and Cyrtopera laguncula were rare at depths of 150–250 m in the tropical region of the SCS, and assemblages in northern and southern SCS were very similar. The relative abundance of B. scutum and P. hertwigii is an indicator for seasonal changes in monsoonal circulation.  相似文献

The first radiolarians discovered in the Ordovician of the Argentinian Precordillera are reported. The material is associated with conodonts indicating the upper part of the Lenodus variabilis Biozone (Lower Darriwilian, Da1-2). The low diversity radiolarian fauna shows similarities with Middle Ordovician radiolarians from the Akzhal Mountains of Kazakhstan. However, a close comparison is difficult due to the poor preservation of the material, in which internal structures of the radiolarian tests are not preserved.  相似文献

Well-preserved Cretaceous (Albian–Turonian) radiolarians were extracted from radiolarian-bearing chert olistoliths of the Monagroulli Member within the Moni Mélange (Campanian-Maastrichtian, Southern Cyprus). Four assemblages were distinguished: Middle Albian–Lower Cenomanian (Thanarla spoletoensis Zone), Upper Albian–Lower Cenomanian (Thanarla spoletoensis Zone, Dorypyle? anisa Subzone), lowermost Turonian (base of Alievium superbum Zone) and Lower Turonian (Alievium superbum Zone). The radiolarian assemblages are diverse and have taxonomic composition similar to coeval assemblages of Italy and Spain. The sediments of the Monagroulli Member differ from coeval rocks of the Mamonia Complex (western Cyprus) by the more common presence of radiolarian cherts and may have been formed in the distal part of a continental margin with less input of clastic material. A new spicular radiolarian genus Cyprothamnus with 2 new species (C. multifurcatus and C. moniensis) is described from the Lower Turonian strata.  相似文献

Well-preserved radiolarians were recovered from seven sections in the Mae Hong Son-Mae Sariang area, northwestern Thailand. 51 species assigned to 34 genera are identified, including 1 new species (Triassospongosphaera erici Feng sp. nov.) and 19 unidentified species. They are divided into the Late Permian, late Ladinian and middle Carnian radiolarian assemblages. Newly identified radiolarian assemblages, together with the published radiolarian biostratigraphic data from this region, indicate that there was a pelagic basin during the Late Paleozoic and Triassic. This basin was joined to the Chiang Dao and Changning-Menglian oceanic basins, and they represent the main oceanic basin of the Paleotethyan Archipelago Ocean. This main oceanic basin was situated in the traditional “Shan-Thai Block”. Therefore, “the Shan-Thai Block” was not a single block during that stage, but composed of the Paleotethyan Ocean and two continental terranes that were affiliated with the Gondwana and Cathaysian domains, respectively.  相似文献

Planktic foraminiferal assemblages are well known to vary in accordance with seasonal fluctuations in ocean properties, periodic reproduction cycles, and variations between water masses. Here we report that storms also can significantly influence foraminiferal assemblages. During the RV Meteor cruise 21 to the Northeast Atlantic Ocean ( area), from March to May 1992, planktic foraminifera were sampled using a multiple opening-closing net. While sampling, two storms with wind forces up to 12 Beaufort caused intensified surface layer mixing with shifts in the depth of the upper ocean mixed-layer from 20–40 m to 170–240 m. Subsequently, planktic foraminiferal growth rates increased, resulting in an elevated quantity of small (100–150 μm) tests (Phase 1). When the wind strength increased a second time, the mixed-layer deepened to a depth below the former position of the pycnocline, and again the abundance of small tests increased (Phase 2). During Phase 2, the weight of calcite in specimens of the productive zone reached its maximum. In the export zone, an associated increase in empty tests occurred with a lag time depending on the test sinking velocity. In the upper export zone, down to 700 m water depth, CaCO3 flux increased from 9.3 to 49.8 mg CaCO3 m−2 d−1 after the first storm and from 8.9 to 19.9 mg CaCO3 m−2d−1 after the second storm. In the 700 to 2500 m depth interval, the flux increased from 5.1 mg CaCO3 m−2 d−1 to about 9.2 mg CaCO, m−2 d−1. Thus, the standing stock of living foraminifera and export of empty tests from the productive zone increased after the storms, leading to pulses of CaCO3 exported from the surface to deep water.  相似文献
