Seventeen species and sub-species of fishes belonging to four families (Cyprinidae, Clariidae, Aplocheilidae, Cichlidae) were known to occur in perennial bodies of water in the Sahara desert. The study of fishes collected in Lake Boukou near Ounianga Serir (Borkou, northern Chad) shows, for the first time, the occurrence in the Sahara desert of relict populations of Polypterus senegalus (Polypteridae) and Poropanchax normani (Poeciliidae). The Cichlidae Tilapia zilli was also collected in this lake. With these new records, the relict fish fauna currently known in lakes and gueltas of the Borkou plateaus comprises six species. In the Ennedi Mountains, where the specific status of Barbus populations was unclear, B. macrops was collected in Bachikere guelta. The toad Amietophrynus regularis was collected in Ounianga Kebir.  相似文献

We describe two events of water plant extinction in the Hula Valley, northern Israel: the ancient, natural extinction of 3 out of 14 extinct species at Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov, which occurred some 800-700 k.yr., and an anthropogenic, near contemporary extinction of seven species in the artificial drainage of the Hula Lake in the 1950s. We conclude that the considerable fraction of water plants that disappeared from the Hula Valley in the Early-Middle Pleistocene was the result of habitat desiccation and not global warming. Thus, there is evidence that the hominins who lived in the Hula Valley inhabited a comparatively dry place. The disappearance of water plant species was partially the result of reduced seed dispersal by birds (ornitochory) as a result of the shrinkage of water bodies and their number along the Rift Valley. We suggest that the disappearance of a group of rare, local water plants can be used as an indicator of climate drying and impacts on the local vegetation.  相似文献

The great lakes of Africa contain one of the most remarkable known examples of rapid evolution and speciation of a vertebrate group. The three major lakes - Lake Victoria, Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika - each contain a unique radiation of fish belonging to the family Cichlidae. This has produced species 'flocks' that are unique to each lake in species numbers and diversity. At present most of the cichlid species in Lake Victoria are facing extinction as a result of the introduction of an exotic fish species. There are many other examples of introductions or invasions of non-native fish that have had severe effects on the native fish populations and regional economics. These examples should provide a clear warning against the proposed introductions of exotic fish into Lake Malawi.  相似文献

The distribution of fish in the three major habitats (inshore, surface and bottom) in Kainji Lake was studied using gill-nets in graded fleets each consisting of seven nets with mesh sizes ranging from 5 cm to 18 cm. No significant difference was observed in the annual yields of fish in the three habitats. Three of the nine major families, however, gave higher yields in selected habitats. Characidae and Cichlidae were most abundant in the shore and surface and Bagridae in the shore and bottom. Catches of the Cichlidae in the surface were limited to areas where the mean depth was below 7 meters. Analysis of variance showed no significant difference in the overall yields of fish among sampling areas located within the major strata of the lake. Although a general trend was observed in the seasonal yields of fish, with higher yields during low water, the variations were not significant either for the overall annual yields or among sets. The implications of these findings in relation to the mode of life of the major fish species and the stability of the fish population are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of elevated turbidity on shallow lake fish communities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis We compared the fish communities of two shallow lakes in the lower Waikato River basin, North Island, New Zealand, to determine the effects of elevated suspended solids (SS) and collapse of submerged macrophytes. Lake Waahi was turbid (20–40 g m-3 SS) and devoid of submerged macrophytes whereas Lake Whangape was clearer (5 g m-3 SS) and dominated by submerged macrophytes. The lakes had similar fish species richness and had nine major species in common; representing eight families including Anguillidae, Retropinnidae, Galaxiidae, Eleotridae, Mugilidae, Ictaluridae, Poeciliidae, and Cyprinidae (two species). The only major fish that was absent from Lake Waahi was a lacustrine form of the common smelt, Retropinna retropinna, which disappeared after the lake became turbid in the late 1970s. CPUE, condition, and size of most species in Lake Waahi were similar to, or greater than, those in Lake Whangape. Lake Whangape clearly exceeded Lake Waahi only for CPUE of two species. Within Lake Whangape two species displayed significantly greater condition, and one species greater size, in a turbid arm of the lake than in the main basin. Apart from lacustrine Retropinna retropinna, the fish in these lakes appear well adapted to cope with, or to avoid, the direct toxic effects of suspended and settleable solids on sensitive early developmental stages. In Lake Waahi loss of cover and food provided by submerged macrophytes appears to have been compensated for by increased turbidity and an associated increase in the biomass of the mysid, Tenagomysis chiltoni (a major prey item).  相似文献

The Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP), situated mainly in the Eastern Highlands Ecoregion of the Upper Congo basin, is drained by the Lowa and Ulindi rivers, and some western affluents of Lake Kivu. In this study, the first list of the fish diversity of these systems is provided based on museum collections and complemented, for the Lowa River system and the western Lake Kivu affluents, with recently collected specimens (2013–2017). A total of 118 species are reported from the Lowa basin, 22 from the Ulindi basin and seven from these Lake Kivu affluents. Within the Lowa and Ulindi, respectively, five and one species, all cichlids, have been introduced. Currently, 51 species are reported from within the park, only two of which have been reported from the highlands, i.e., Amphilius kivuensis from the Luha, the source of the Luka River, and Clarias liocephalus from the headwaters of the Lake Kivu’ affluents. With a total of 30 species, Cyprinidae is by far the largest family, representing 25% of the total species diversity of the Lowa basin. It is followed by Mormyridae with 13 species (11%), Alestidae and Mochokidae with 10 species each (8%), Clariidae and Amphiliidae with eight species (7%), and Distichodontidae with six species (5%). Seven new species for science were discovered and 11 species were found to be endemic to the Lowa system. Although further exploration is needed, this underscores the importance of the KBNP in protecting the fish fauna of the Lowa basin but also highlights the park's limited coverage of the fish fauna of the Lowa basin.  相似文献

Lake Agmon was constructed in summer 1994 in the northern part of the drained Lake Hula swamp, as part of the Hula Reclamation Project. One of the main goals of the project was to attract aquatic and semi- aquatic birds to the area as a basis for planned eco-tourism and one of the main concerns of the project was the potential for increased proliferation of mosquitoes (including vector species of malarial parasites). There was a perceived need, therefore, to establish and maintain a suitable fish community. This present study documents the developments in the fish community in Lake Agmon between May 1995 and December 1996. The lake was initially stocked with two fish species, Tilapia zillii and Gambusia affinis, to control mosquitoes and to provide suitable small- bodied forage species for piscivorous birds. Subsequent stocking also included Oreochromis aureus, and Cyprinus carpio. Additional species were established by immigration from the Jordan River. Relatively large species ( e.g., Clarias gariepinus and C. carpio) flowed into the lake as eggs or juveniles, whereas the smaller species ( e.g., Hemigrammocapoeta nana, Pseudophoxinus kervillei and Aphanius mento) entered the lake as adults. In the first year, eight fish species were found in Lake Agmon: T. zillii, G. affinis, C. gariepinus, C. carpio, Capoeta damascina, P. kervillei, Acanthobrama lissneri and H. nana. Of these, T. zillii, G. affinis and H. nana were dominant, though the relative abundance of H. nana was very low in spring, and increased during summer. In the second year, O. aureus, A. mento and Anguilla anguilla also occurred in the lake. The density of P. kervillei increased, in comparison with the previous year. The relative proportions of juvenile and adult fish also changed in the second year. A high percentage of young T. zillii was found during the first spring, decreasing in the summer and autumn. The proportion of juveniles of both G. affinnis and H. nana was very low during the first year, but increased during the second. These results indicate that the fish community of Lake Agmon had not stabilized by the end of 1996 and that further changes in relative abundances, and species, age and sex compositions should be expected.  相似文献

We establish through 13 excavations the landscape context and nature of hominin activities across the Zinjanthropus land surface from which the Leakeys recovered the FLK 22 and FLK NN 1 paleoanthropological assemblages. The land surface was created by fluvial incision of the eastern margin of paleo-Lake Olduvai following a major lake withdrawal. Erosion was uneven, leaving a peninsula bounded by a river channel, the FLK Fault, and a freshwater wetland. This FLK Peninsula supported groves of trees that attracted hominins and carnivores, and that preserved the dense concentrations of carcass remains and stone tools they left behind, including those at FLK 22. Some carcasses appear to have been acquired at the ecotone of the Peninsula and Wetland, where another dense artifact and bone assemblage accumulated. A lesser topographic high at the edge of a Typha marsh in the Wetland was the site of FLK NN 1 and a scatter of large stone tools used possibly for rootstock processing. Our landscape reconstruction delimits the vegetation mosaic indicated by previous work and provides a topographical explanation for the existence of FLK 22 and FLK NN 1. Both are unexpected if the FLK area was the flat, featureless lake margin terrain typical of lake basins similar to paleo-Olduvai. The results show that the Leakeys’ sites were not isolated occupation floors but rather parts of a land surface utilized intensively by hominins. Although commonly considered to have been home bases, their likely high predation risk, evidenced by large carnivore feeding traces and the remains of four hominin individuals, suggests visits to them were brief and limited to feeding. Finally, stratigraphic observations confirm that FLK NN 3 accumulated on an older land surface, refuting the hypothesis that the OH 8 foot found there is the same individual as the OH 35 leg from FLK 22.  相似文献

The fish fauna of the newly inundated Lake Itezhi-tezhi, Zambia was observed between 1980 and 1985. Marked changes in the community structure were identified. The most obvious were a decline in species diversity and a shift in species composition from acommunity with a preponderance of Alesles lateralis (Boulenger) (Characidae), to one dominated by cichlids. These changes were primarily due to members of the families Cyprinidae, Mormyridae and Schilbeidae being unable to adapt to the new environmental conditions, such as spawning and feeding grounds, and their inability to cope with fluctuating water levels in the lake. It was suggested that a sound fishery data collection system be implemented to provide reliable information on which to base management policy.  相似文献

A study of the distribution of fish populations in the inshore, surface and bottom water habitats of L. Kainji, and comparison with previous data, showed that there has been a relative increase in the populations of the fish families Cichlidae, Bagridae, Schilbeidae, Centropomidae and Cyprinidae and a relative decrease in the populations of the Characidae, Mochokidae, Citharinidae and Mormyridae. The overall composition of fish families caught in the three habitats varied significantly ( P <0.05). Four of the nine major families showed habitat preference: there was a preponderance of Cichlidae and Centropomidae in the inshore water habitat; Bagridae were evenly distributed in the inshore and bottom waters; and Schilbeidae were the most abundant in the surface water habitat. There were significant differences in the total catch among the various sampling stations. However, there was no significant difference in the catch of various family groups except in Cyprinidae. It was established that overall catches from the three major habitats were inversely proportional to water level in the lake.  相似文献

A member of the Cyprinidae family, the Chalcalburnus tarichi is a fish species that only inhabits the Lake Van Basin. The Lake Van represents an interesting ecosystem in the world, known as the biggest soda lake in the world, in that its water is highly alkaline with a pH of 9.8. C. tarichi has bright-silver color, its back is grayish green, and the abdominal region is silver. Its body is covered with small scales, and its eyes are large. It feeds on phyto and zooplanktons. Its average life span is 7 years, and the fish reaches reproductive maturity at 3 years old. C. tarichi is an diadrom fish that lives in the lake, but during the reproduction period it immigrates to the surrounding freshwater rivers returning after the reproduction period of April–July. In the past, pearl mullet was an attractive fresh fish for the local people and was easily caught during the spawning migration, resulting in over-fishing. The species was one of the highly endangered animals of Turkey before conservation studies, some 10 years ago, have started. At present, illegal fishing activities declined, although some locals are continuing to fish during the spawning season.  相似文献

Synopsis Nile perch, Lates niloticus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were originally transplanted from Lake Albert in western Uganda to the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga, where they are partially implicated in reduction of the fish species diversity. Lake Albert is facing multiple environmental changes, including declining fish species diversity, hyper-eutrophication, hypoxia, and reduced fish catches. To examine the role of Nile perch and Nile tilapia in the food web in their native Lake Albert, we estimated their diets using stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. In Lake Albert, the tilapiine congeners (closely related species), Tilapia zillii, Oreochromis leucostictus, and Sarethorodon galilaeus, and the centropomid Nile perch congener, Lates macrophthalmus, have narrower diet breath in the presence of the native O. niloticus and L. niloticus. A computerized parameter search of dietary items for five commercially important fish species (Hydrocynus forskahlii, Bagrus bayad, L. niloticus, Alestes baremose and Brycinus nurse) was completed using a static isotopic mixing model. The outcome of the simulation for most fish species compared favorably to previously published stomach contents data for the Lake Albert fishes dating back to 1928, demonstrating agreement between stable isotope values and analyses of stomach contents. While there were some indications of changes in the diets of L. niloticus and A. baremose diets over the past 20 years in parallel with other changes in the lake, for the most part, food web structure in this lake remained stable since 1928. The Lake Albert fish assemblage provides insight into the invasion success of L. niloticus and O. niloticus.  相似文献

The pond smelt Hypomesus olidus and minnow Zacco platypus were collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes in January 2003, and their metacercarial infections was examined by the muscle compression and artificial digestion techniques. In the Soyang Lake, 161 metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (0.35 per fish) were harvested from 459 pond smelts examined. Also, 13 metacercariae of C. sinensis (0.43 per fish), 1 of Metagonimus sp., 4 of Echinostoma sp., 148 of Centrocestus armatus and 44 unidentified species were collected from 30 minnows. In the Daechung Lake, 369 metacercariae of C. sinensis (3.69 per fish) and 51 unidentified species were recovered from 100 pond smelts. The metacercariae of C. sinensis were fed to experimental rats, in which the adult flukes were identified. The pond smelts and minnows collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes were verified to be the second intermediate hosts and the sources of human C. sinensis infection.  相似文献

Starting in the middle of the 1970s, submerged macrophytes began to disappear from shallow Lake Warniak due to feeding pressure by grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). In the middle of the 1980s, the lake was stocked with seston-feeding silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis). By 1993, the biomass of silverhead carp and bighead carp had declined. This allowed charophytes to recolonize the bottom of the lake. The main charophyte species at this time were Chara globularis and Chara rudis. Since then, five other stonewort species have been found: Chara contraria, C. filiformis, C. tomentosa, C. aspera and Nitellopsis obtusa. Seventeen species of aquatic angiosperms have also been found. There were distinct changes in the relative abundance and spatial distribution of particular species. C. rudis developed most intensely in the shallow parts of the lake near the southern and western shores. C. globularis gradually took over the deeper central part of the lake. In 2001, C. rudis began to retreat again. The relative abundance and spatial distribution of charophytes was correlated to water clarity (r = 0.87, p < 0.05), total phosphorus level (r = −0.78; p < 0.05), and chlorophyll a content (r = −0.79; p < 0.05).  相似文献

Thousands of vertebrate fossils have been recovered from the lower Omo River Valley, in southern Ethiopia, however, fishes have been poorly reported. Here we describe fossil fish remains deriving from the Shungura Formation, part of the Omo Group of deposits ranging in date from 1.8 to 3.4 my. Two new species are reported, Sindacharax omoensis (Characiformes) and Lates arambourgi (Perciformes), which suggest greater diversity of these genera than previously documented.  相似文献

Aquifers dominated by Pleistocene basalts and Jurassic to Cretaceous calcareous rocks feed the Hula basin which is drained by the Jordan River into Lake Kinneret. The sedimentary sequence of Lower-Middle Pleistocene Benot Ya‘akov Formation (BYF) exposed by excavations of the 0.78 Ma lake-side site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov (GBY) consists of six cycles representing ca. 100 ka history of the Hula basin. This study characterizes the types of water sources in the catchment, tests the use of the Strontium (Sr) isotopes in the common extant snail Melanopsis sp. as a tracer for water in its habitat, and uses this tracer in the fossil specimens from GBY to investigate the palaeohydrology of the Hula paleolake during the corresponding period. The Sr isotope composition (87Sr/86Sr) of extant Melanopsis shells in the Hula catchment range widely (0.7046-0.7079). These analyses define distinct groups of water sources and aquifers, while the Jordan River at the GBY site has values around 0.70685. The values for fossil Melanopsis from GBY vary along stratigraphy; they are highest around 0.70710 in Cycles 1 and 2, decrease to around 0.70685 in Cycle 3, and exhibit upward trending fluctuations in the subsequent cycles to 0.70703 in Cycle 6. This trend reveals the dominance of the Hermon Jurassic aquifer during the earlier, colder periods before the Matuyama-Brunhes Boundary (MBB) and enhanced influence of the Golan basaltic aquifers, in subsequent warmer periods, indicating that the MBB coincides with climate warming as supported by other indicators. Hence, this global geochronological indicator of 0.78 Ma is also potentially a global palaeoclimatic marker. The similarity between the Sr isotope composition of the Jordan River waters and Melanopsis and those from Cycle 3 suggests that the current climate corresponds to that of the warmest period within the record of GBY, clarifying the comparative interpretation of this 100 k.yr. climate record.  相似文献

Distributional records of non‐native fish species were identified in the Wet Tropics region, Far North Queensland, Australia, through a compilation of published records and expert knowledge. A total of 1106 records were identified comprising 346 presence and four uncertain records for at least 13 species, and 756 absence records. All current presence records consist of six species from the families Cichlidae and Poeciliidae with established self‐sustaining populations in the region, probably affecting the highly diverse native fish fauna.  相似文献

Of the approximately 1.5 million species described to date, about 48 170 (3.2%) are vertebrates. Of these 24 618 (51%) are fishes. Amazingly, 41% of fishes are found in fresh water which makes up a negligible percentage of the water on earth. The sea accounts for 97% of all water on the planet and contains 58% of the fish species, mostly from shallow, warm-coastal areas. The families Cichlidae, Cyprinidae, Characidae, Loricariidae, and Cyprinodontidae constitute about half of all the recently described new freshwater fish species named in the period 1978–1993. The Gobiidae and Serranidae are the marine families with the largest number of recently described new species. The most new freshwater teleost names came from South America (39%), Africa (32%) and Asia (17%). New fish species continue to be described at the rate of roughly 130–160 each year. An estimated 13 775 new fish names have been proposed in this century, representing about 56% of all currently known fish species. Three species are discussed in detail to represent remarkable examples of 20th century fish discoveries: the coelacanth Latimeria chalumnae, the salamanderfish Lepidogalaxias salamandroides of Western Australia, and the megamouth shark Megachasma pelagios. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
