Notes on the taxonomy and distribution of various species of Labiatae of Mexico, and Central and South America, are presented, as part of a continuing series of supplements to the authors’ earlier monographs. Eight new species are described in the generaHyptis, Salvia, Satureja, andScutellaria. Two new combinations are made, one each inHarlanlewisia andSatureja. South Africa developed its first biological control programme for a submerged aquatic weed following the discovery of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle (Hydrocharitaceae) in a major tourism dam in 2006. A leaf-mining fly, Hydrellia sp. (Diptera: Ephydridae) from Singapore, originating on a closely related biotype of the weed invading South Africa, was considered a priority candidate agent. Host range was investigated through no-choice and paired-choice larval development trials. “Host suitability” trials (multiple generations and performance) were used to further evaluate the potential for non-target host use by the fly. Hydrellia sp. developed on a few closely related species in the Hydrocharitaceae and one species in the Potamogetonaceae. However, paired-choice tests demonstrated a strong preference for its host plant and the host suitability trials indicated that Hydrellia sp. has very limited potential to establish permanent populations on native aquatic plant species. Hydrellia sp. should therefore be considered safe for release in South Africa.  相似文献

It can be demonstrated that the Indigo of Commerce in Colonial North America consisted of three species in the genusIndigofera. One of these was a native plant,I. Caroliniana Mill, while the other two were introduced.Indigofera tinctoria L. (French Indigo), an Old World species, andI. Suffruticosa Mill. (Guatemala Indigo), a New World species, were both introduced into South Carolina in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Their cultivation flourished until the American Revolution. Five taxa already in the literature are here removed from Chydorus to their own genus Ephemeroporus, and two new species — E. acanthodes and E. archboldi — are described, with E. acanthodes being designated the type species of the genus. These taxa, plus at least nine undescribed species and others undoubtedly waiting to be sorted out, constitute a tightly circumscribed group of species morphologically. The first two species described — E. barroisi and E. poppei — are nomina dubia for the present, as no specimens exist from the original collections, nor are any available from the type localities or reasonably close thereto. E. hybridus from Brazil has been characterized in greater detail through the availability of specimens from the type series, which has enabled one of the species in the E. hybridus group from North America to be judged conspecific with reasonable certainty. E. tridentatus, from Brazil, has been restored as a valid species, and the highly distinctive E. phintonicus from Sardinia and Algeria constitutes the seventh species in the genus. Chydorus nitidulus and Chydorus tilhoi, which have been suggested to be members of the barroisi complex, are not. What are presently called E. barroisi and E. hybridus, except for E. hybridus, sens. str., each consists of a cluster of species sharing the same number of teeth on the labrum and shell. Because of their wide, distribution, abundance, and frequency of occurrence, especially in South Asia, the species in the E. barroisi group will be especially meaningful to sort out.  相似文献

The South American cichlid fish, Acarichthys heckelii, is one of many exotic species established in Singapore’s artificial freshwater habitat; forming the only recorded population outside its native distribution. The discovery of an A. heckelii individual in a sensitive natural waterway (Nee Soon Swamp Forest) prompted this study, which aimed to investigate the distribution, diet, growth and reproductive ecology of the fish, as well as its possible route of introduction. We found that A. heckelii is largely restricted to artificial freshwater bodies, although a sizable established population occurs in a modified waterway connected to Nee Soon Swamp Forest. Gut contents revealed that the fish fed mainly on benthic algae and macroinvertebrates, the latter occurring in higher frequencies in larger individuals. While unable to ascertain clear seasonality in its breeding, we observed a peak in reproductive investment coinciding with the Northeast monsoon, indicating possible life history adaptations. Genetic comparisons of the cytochrome b mitochondrial marker between individuals from South America, Singapore and the ornamental fish trade shows that the A. heckelii populations in Singapore’s fresh waters are more closely related to fishes in the ornamental fish trade than the native population in South America, corroborating anecdotal evidences identifying aquarists as the source of local releases. Our findings also demonstrate the viability of the ornamental trade as an avenue of species introduction and the potential invasiveness of A. heckelii.  相似文献

The species composition of centric diatoms from Lake Frolikha (Transbaikal area) has been studied. The lake is located on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal and connected with it by a river. Twenty-three species of Centrophyceae from 7 genera (Aulacoseira, Cyclostephanos, Cyclotella, Discostella, Handmania, Pliocaenicus, and Stephanodiscus) have been found. The most represented genus is Aulacoseira (11 species). Fifteen species and 4 genera are new for the lake record. All revealed species are known in other lakes of the Baikal region; however Baikal endemics are absent in Lake Frolikha. The flora of centric diatoms in Lake Frolikha can be divided into two groups. The first group includes taxa common in Lake Baikal, and the second group includes taxa not typical for Lake Baikal. The level of differences between flora in Lake Baikal and Lake Frolikha is high (43%) despite the close location and connection to the river. An analysis of distribution of interesting species in Asia is presented.  相似文献

Three introduced parasites ofPhthorimaea operculella (Zeller) are now widespread, and a fourth established in a limited area, in Australia.Apanteles subandinus Blanchard, which occurs from Tasmania to Queensland, is the most effective species and the outstanding parasite in Victoria. The extent of parasitism and the status of the various parasites were monitored from the time of their release until 1971. In many areas whereCopidosoma koehleri Blanchard was the only parasite found in 1966, a substantial increase in parasitism was recorded in subsequent years, following the liberation of other species. In the 1969–70 season there was an explosive increase inOrgilus lepidus Muesebeck, which became the dominant species in some coastal areas of New South Wales, displacingA. subandinus. Its change of status to a dominant position was associated with a change of sex ratio from 1.6 ♀: 1♂ to 1.0 ♀: 1 ♂.  相似文献

The “East Pacific Barrier” has been recognized as the World’s largest marine biogeographic barrier. Munida gregaria is the only species of its family with transpacific populations; however, it still remains to be elucidated whether these two distantly located populations belong to the same species. In this study, we investigated the genetic cohesion of M. gregaria across the East Pacific Barrier by analyzing mitochondrial markers. Cytochrome oxidase subunit I and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 genes were sequenced for individuals from different areas, i.e., the southeast Pacific, the southern tip of South America, the southwest Atlantic, and the southwest Pacific. A median-joining network, pairwise F STs, genetic diversity statistics, and neutrality tests were computed. Our results, i.e., the absence of different haplogroups on both sides of the East Pacific Barrier and existence of shared haplotypes, showed that populations on both sides of this barrier belong to the same species. At a population genetic level, our results suggest that individuals from both regions have been connected, since although some differentiation was found between the southern tip of South America and the southwest Pacific, the southeast Pacific and southwest Atlantic showed no signs of differentiation from the southwest Pacific. In addition, our results provided evidence of a population expansion in southern South America during the Pleistocene. The role of Pleistocene glaciations and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in shaping the distribution of sub-Antarctic marine invertebrates is discussed.  相似文献

Buller’s Albatross, Thalassarche bulleri, is a New Zealand breeding endemic that is frequently observed in the subtropical and sub-Antarctic South Pacific Ocean between Australia and Peru. However, in the South Atlantic Ocean, it is a vagrant, as information on its presence in this region is limited to only a few sightings. Here, we report a new record of T. bulleri in the south-western Atlantic Ocean off Argentina (55°06′13″S, 66°06′44″W) while investigating interactions between commercial fisheries and seabirds. This record provides new information about the distribution of this albatross species and its relation with fisheries outside of its regular range.  相似文献

The South African invasive legume Dipogon lignosus (Phaseoleae) produces nodules with both determinate and indeterminate characteristics in New Zealand (NZ) soils. Ten bacterial isolates produced functional nodules on D. lignosus. The 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences identified one isolate as Bradyrhizobium sp., one isolate as Rhizobium sp. and eight isolates as Burkholderia sp. The Bradyrhizobium sp. and Rhizobium sp. 16S rRNA sequences were identical to those of strains previously isolated from crop plants and may have originated from inocula used on crops. Both 16S rRNA and DNA recombinase A (recA) gene sequences placed the eight Burkholderia isolates separate from previously described Burkholderia rhizobial species. However, the isolates showed a very close relationship to Burkholderia rhizobial strains isolated from South African plants with respect to their nitrogenase iron protein (nifH), N-acyltransferase nodulation protein A (nodA) and N-acetylglucosaminyl transferase nodulation protein C (nodC) gene sequences. Gene sequences and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) PCR and repetitive element palindromic PCR (rep-PCR) banding patterns indicated that the eight Burkholderia isolates separated into five clones of one strain and three of another. One strain was tested and shown to produce functional nodules on a range of South African plants previously reported to be nodulated by Burkholderia tuberum STM678T which was isolated from the Cape Region. Thus, evidence is strong that the Burkholderia strains isolated here originated in South Africa and were somehow transported with the plants from their native habitat to NZ. It is possible that the strains are of a new species capable of nodulating legumes.  相似文献

Caryopsis and spikelet fork remains of Dasypyrum villosum (L.) Coss. & Durieu ex P. Candargy have been recovered from a Hallstatt period archaeobotanical assemblage (ca. 900/800–450 cal. bc) in western Hungary (Carpathian basin). The presence of D. villosum has not been reported previously from any Hungarian archaeological sites, however there are accounts of its possible occurrence from the Neolithic, the Bronze and Iron Age in northern Serbia. The exact identification of the species has been hindered by its morphological similarity to wild rye and wheat species, as well as to Secale cereale L. and Triticum timopheevii Zhuk. ssp. timopheevii. D. villosum has been found growing at seven locations in Hungary during the past 100 years. Most of these occurrences do not exist today, and the species is not considered indigenous to the present Hungarian flora. The new finds of this species from an Iron Age feature dated to 702–696 cal. bc in western Hungary leave doubts as to whether it is indigenous or not, and should encourage archaeobotanists to consider the possibility of the occurrence of this species on other sites.  相似文献

The Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus) is a small lacertid lizard species, and its distribution range encompasses the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, China and Russia. Eremias argus is widespread, but populations on the Korean Peninsula are small and declining, provoking concerns that genetic diversity is being lost. This species is currently listed under the Protection of Wild Fauna and Flora Act in South Korea. In this study, nine novel microsatellites for E. argus were developed with a biotin-enrichment method and used to understand its population genetic structure and delineate conservation units on the Korean Peninsula. Overall, low intrapopulation genetic diversity was observed (mean number of alleles per locus = 2.463; mean H E = 0.398) from 10 populations investigated (n = 110). Two populations (among five with n≥ 10) showed an excess of heterozygosity expected under HWE relative to that expected at mutation-drift equilibrium, indicating severe reduction in population sizes. With only a few exceptions, the overall genetic differentiation among populations was substantial with the high levels of pairwise-F ST (0.006–0.746) and -R ST (0.034–0.940) values. The results of Bayesian STRUCTURE analysis showed that E. argus populations on the Korean Peninsula were most likely partitioned into three genetic clusters. Taken all together, such low levels of gene flow and strong genetic structuring have critical implications for the conservation of this endangered species and its management.  相似文献

Of the many types of freshwater bodies across Iceland (e.g., lakes, springs, rivers, and ponds), greater effort has been invested in researching the freshwater Crustacea (Cladocera, Copepoda) of more permanent, larger, and deeper water bodies than on smaller or more ephemeral sites. To address this, we described the fauna of 12 shallow freshwater bodies distributed from the coast to the central highlands of Iceland. We identified 16 species in 11 genera belonging to six families of Cladocera, and 12 species in eight genera belonging to four families of Copepoda. Five of the species we identified (Alona werestschagini, Cyclops vicinus, Daphnia cristata, Diacyclops abyssicola, and Heterocope borealis) represent new distribution records for Iceland, increasing the number of species now known from this region to 34 Cladocera and 38 Copepoda taxa. Additionally, we discuss the taxonomy of some species with doubtful taxonomical status. Six crustacean taxocenes are described, each characterized by the dominance of different taxa, with bottom sediment characteristics best explaining species assemblage structure. We evaluated the relationships between Icelandic Cladocera and Copepoda faunas and those of the adjacent Svalbard, Faroe, and Shetland Islands, Greenland, and the mainland Norway. The taxonomic composition of the Icelandic fauna is dominated by widely distributed Holarctic, and secondarily Palaearctic and Nearctic species, and is more similar to the faunas of the major North Atlantic islands (64.2–71.8 % similarity) than it is to that of continental Norway.  相似文献

The mahseers are an important group of fishes endemic to Asia with most species considered threatened. Conservation plans to save declining wild populations are hindered by unstable taxonomy, and detailed systematic review could form a solid platform for future management and conservation. D-loop and cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) mtDNA sequences were examined in nine mahseer species of Tor, Neolissochilus, and Naziritor. Pseudogenes amplified in a portion of the species limited the utility of the D-loop region. ABGD analysis, NJ, ML, and MP methods and genetic distance (TrN?+?I?+?G) using COI data revealed concordant species delimiting patterns. The three genera were monophyletic, separated as distinct clades (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.064 to 0.106), and Naziritor was flagged as a separate genus, distinct from Puntius (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.196). Out of seven nominal species known for Tor cogeners from India, only five were recovered with mtDNA data (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.000 to 0.037) and two species could not be distinguished with the molecular data set employed. Tor mosal, synonymized as Tor putitora, was rediscovered as a distinct species (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.031) based on its type locality. Tor mussulah was confirmed as a separate species (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.019 to 0.026). Two valid species, Tor macrolepis and T. mosal mahanadicus, were not distinct from T. putitora (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.00). The high divergence with mtDNA data failed to validate T. mosal mahanadicus as a subspecies of T. mosal (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.031). Morphological outliers discovered within the distribution range of Tor tor (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.022 to 0.025) shared the same lineage with T. putitora (TrN?+?I?+?G 0.002 to 0.005), indicating a new extended distribution of the Himalayan mahseer T. putitora in the rivers of the Indian central plateau. The findings indicate the need for integrating molecular and morphological tools for taxonomic revision of the Tor and Naziritor genera, so that taxa are precisely defined for accurate in situ and ex situ conservation decisions.  相似文献

Introgression between two allopatric species,Quercus macrocarpa andQ. gambelii, has been observed in two separate locations: northeastern New Mexico and the Black Hills of western South Dakota and adjacent Wyoming. The probability that this introgression is the result of long-range pollination appears remote. Presumably these two species hybridized during a period of past sympatric association. Further indication of past sympatry in the Black Hills is the presence of a common species of obligate parasite, i.e., wasp(Cynips insulensis) onQ. gambelii in the Rocky Mountains and onQ. macrocarpa of the Black Hills. The hybrid oaks in New Mexico probably reflect a westward migration ofQ. macrocarpa during pluvial periods of the Pleistocene.Quercus gambelii most likely reached the Black Hills during the warmer postglacial hypsithermal era. The hybridization reported here may reflect secondary sympatry, i.e., sympatric occurrence after the species, or their ancestors, became geographically separated.  相似文献

The Brown’s Grayling (Pseudochazara amymone) is one of the most enigmatic and sought after species among European butterflies. Hiding its exact distribution for almost 40 years with the idea of protecting it, resulted in an increasing collector’s interest, with market prices reaching up to 1,000 euro for a single female after its discovery in Albania. Aiming to demystify this butterfly and enable entomologists and conservationists to see the species in its natural environment, we provide detailed information on its distribution in south-eastern Albania. In addition, we modelled the potential species distribution to facilitate further surveys within its potential range. The modelled range of P. amymone is highly fragmented stretching from the central part of eastern Albania to northern Greece and is strongly bound to ophiolite geological strata. The species was re-assessed as Endangered according to the IUCN criteria, with a predicted population decline due to construction of hydroelectric power plants in one of the locations. We argue that hiding valuable information regarding threatened insect species may have negative effects and we advocate publishing available distribution data so that conservation measures may be undertaken where and when necessary.  相似文献
