Effect of Fruiting on Leaf Gas Exchange in Olive (Olea Europaea L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect on traits of photosynthesis and water relations of assimilate demand was studied in olive tree that has strong alternate bearing. The diurnal and seasonal leaf gas exchanges, area dry mass, and saccharide and chlorophyll (Chl) contents were measured by comparing shoots with fruit of "on-trees" (heavy fruit load) with shoots without fruit on both "on-trees" and "off-trees" (light fruit load). In spite of large seasonal and diurnal differences, leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (C 1), transpiration rate (E), and respiration rate (R D) were not significantly influenced by fruit load or by the presence or absence of fruit on the shoot. An only exception was at the beginning of July when the one-year-old leaves on shoots with fruit had slightly higher P N and E than leaves on shoots without fruit. Water content, Chl and saccharide contents, and area dry mass of the leaf were not substantially influenced by the presence/absence of fruit on the shoot or fruit load. Hence the sink demand, associated with fruit growth, did not improve leaf photosynthetic efficiency in olive. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Shoot cultures of Hedyotis corymbosa, a C3 species, and sugarcane, a C4 species, were used to examine the effects of various CO2 concentrations and two light intensities on growth and photosynthetic rates. The fresh and dry weights of new growth of Hedyotis shoots were higher when grown under the higher light intensity, while differences among shoots grown under different CO2 levels were marginal. After 14 d of growth in various CO2 concentrations, no significant differences could be observed in the newly produced leaves of Hedyotis with respect to stomatal distribution and number of mesophyll cell layers. Shoots grown under high light intensity did not show higher rates of photosynthesis than those grown under low light intensity. Also, sugarcane shoots grown in a CO2-enriched environment did not have higher photosynthetic rates, perhaps because the C4 pathway is less sensitive to the ambient CO2 concentration. The quantum yield of Hedyotis shoots grown on medium with 20 g l−1 sucrose was lower than that of shoots on lower sucrose concentrations, supporting the view that photosynthesis is inhibited by high levels of sucrose. Our results suggest that Hedyotis shoots in culture exhibit some form of acclimation to high CO2. so that there is no net gain in productivity by photosynthesis.  相似文献

Midday measurements of single leaf gas exchange rates of upper canopy leaves of soybeans grown in the field at 350 (AC) and 700 (EC) µmol(CO2) mol–1 in open topped chambers sometimes indicated up to 50 % higher net photosynthetic rates (P N) measured at EC in plants grown at AC compared to EC. On other days mean P N were nearly identical in the two growth [CO2] treatments. There was no seasonal pattern to the variable photosynthetic responses of soybean to growth [CO2]. Even on days with significantly lower P N in the plants grown at EC, there was no reduction in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, chlorophyll, or soluble protein contents per unit of leaf area. Over three years, gas exchange evidence of acclimation occurred on days when either soil was dry or the water vapor pressure deficit was high (n = 12 d) and did not occur on days after rain or on days with low water vapor pressure deficit (n = 9 d). On days when photosynthetic acclimation was evident, midday leaf water potentials were consistently 0.2 to 0.3 MPa lower for the plants grown at EC than at AC. This suggested that greater susceptibility to water stress in plants grown at EC cause the apparent photosynthetic acclimation. In other experiments, plants were grown in well-watered pots in field chambers and removed to the laboratory early in the morning for gas exchange measurements. In these experiments, the amount of photosynthetic acclimation evident in the gas exchange measurements increased with the maximum water vapor pressure deficit on the day prior to the measurements, indicating a lag in the recovery of photosynthesis from water stress. The apparent increase in susceptibility to water stress in soybean plants grown at EC is opposite to that observed in some other species, where photosynthetic acclimation was evident under wet but not dry conditions, and may be related to the observation that hydraulic conductance is reduced in soybeans when grown at EC. The day-to-day variation in photosynthetic acclimation observed here may account for some of the conflicting results in the literature concerning the existence of acclimation to EC in field-grown plants.  相似文献

The photosynthetic rates of intact sporophytes or gametophytes of the fern Todea barbara grown in sterile culture were measured using an infrared gas analyzer. Sporophytes consisted of single whole plants with roots and leaves grown in tubes of agar. Gametophytes were grown as several plants covering the surface of the agar. Sporophytes had photosynthetic rates at light saturation of 8.50 microliters CO2 per hour per milligram dry weight and 1,300 microliters CO2 per hour per milligram chlorophyll, whereas rates for gametophytes were lower, 2.36 microliters CO2 per hour per milligram dry weight and 236 microliters CO2 per hour per milligram chlorophyll.  相似文献

Summary The rate of metabolism and biosynthetic processes makein vitro cultures very sensitive to environmental changes, and therefore subject to physiological and morphological alterations leading to senescence in the short term. The effect of three different calibrated atmospheric compositions were studied duringin vitro culture ofPrunus avium shoots. At 0.034% CO2-21% O2 (vol/vol), which stimulate the natural atmosphere, the highest growth rate and chlorophyll content were recorded. When grown at 0.09% CO2-8% O2 (vol/vol), a favorable condition for photosynthesis and growth, cultures showed a higher percentage of dry matter and elevated ethylene production, but total chlorophyll was lower. These shoots were also highly lignified and fibrous with red pigmentation along the leaves and stems. At 0% CO2-21% O2 (vol/vol), in contrast, growth and ethylene formation were inhibited; chlorophyll content was lowest in comparison with the other two environmental conditions, but regreening of tissues was observed after the first half of the culture period. Senescence symptoms, as indicated by decreased chlorophyll, appeared after about 18 d of culture for tissues grown in CO2-containing atmospheres. These experiments provided evidence that in CO2-enriched cultures biomass production steadily increased even when chlorophyll decreased. A possible role of CO2 in promoting tissue-senescence through activation of photooxidative events and ethylene synthesis is discussed.  相似文献

Regulation of photosynthetic rates of submerged rooted macrophytes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Fourteen temperate, submerged macrophytes were cultivated in the laboratory at high DIC levels (3.3–3.8 mM), 10.4–14.4 mol photons (PAR) m-2 d-1 and 15°C. Photosynthesis at photosaturation ranged between 0.59 and 17.98 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 at ambient pH (8.3) and were markedly higher between 1.76 and 47.11 mg O2 g-1 DW h-1 at pH 6.5 under elevated CO2 concentrations. Photosynthetic rates were significantly related to both the relative surface area and the chlorophyll content of the leaves. Consequently, the photosynthetic rate was much less variable among the species when expressed per surface area and chlorophyll content instead of dry mass. The chlorophyll content was probably a main predictor of photosynthesis of submerged leaves because of the direct relationship of chlorophyll to the light harvesting capacity and/or a coupling to the capacity for photosynthetic electron transport and carboxylation. A comparison with terrestrial leaves characterized the submerged leaves by their low chlorophyll concentrations and low photosynthetic rates per surface area due to the thin leaves. Photosynthetic rates per chlorophyll content in submerged leaves at CO2 saturation, however, were at the same level as photosynthesis in terrestrial leaves measured at ambient CO2 when appropriate corrections were made for differences in incubation temperature.  相似文献

Summary The effects of CO2 enrichment on plant growth, carbon and nitrogen acquisition and resource allocation were investigated in order to examine several hypotheses about the mechanisms that govern dry matter partitioning between shoots and roots. Wild radish plants (Raphanus sativus × raphanistrum) were grown for 25 d under three different atmospheric CO2 concentrations (200 ppm, 330 ppm and 600 ppm) with a stable hydroponic 150 mol 1–1 nitrate supply. Radish biomass accumulation, photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, nitrogen per unit leaf area, and starch and soluble sugar levels in leaves increased with increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, whereas specific leaf area and nitrogen concentration of leaves significantly decreased. Despite substantial changes in radish growth, resource acquisition and resource partitioning, the rate at which leaves accumulated starch over the course of the light period and the partitioning of biomass between roots and shoots were not affected by CO2 treatment. This phenomenon was consistent with the hypothesis that root/shoot partitioning is related to the daily rate of starch accumulation by leaves during the photoperiod, but is inconsistent with hypotheses suggesting that root/shoot partitioning is controlled by some aspect of plant C/N balance.  相似文献

The azimuth of vertical leaves of Silphium terebinthinaceum profoundly influenced total daily irradiance as well as the proportion of direct versus diffuse light incident on the adaxial and abaxial leaf surface. These differences caused structural and physiological adjustments in leaves that affected photosynthetic performance. Leaves with the adaxial surface facing East received equal daily integrated irradiance on each surface, and these leaves had similar photosynthetic rates when irradiated on either the adaxial or abaxial surface. The adaxial surface of East-facing leaves was also the only surface to receive more direct than diffuse irradiance and this was the only leaf side which had a clearly defined columnar palisade layer. A potential cost of constructing East-facing leaves with symmetrical photosynthetic capcity was a 25% higher specific leaf mass and increased leaf thickness in comparison to asymmetrical South-facing leaves. The adaxial surface of South-facing leaves received approximately three times more daily integrated irradiance than the abaxial surface. When measured at saturating CO2 and irradiance, these leaves had 42% higher photosynthetic rates when irradiated on the adaxial surface than when irradiated on the abaxial surface. However, there was no difference in photosynthesis for these leaves when irradiated on either surface when measurements were made at ambient CO2. Stomatal distribution (mean adaxial/abaxial stomatal density = 0.61) was unaffected by leaf orientation. Thus, the potential for high photosynthetic rates of adaxial palisade cells in South-facing leaves at ambient CO2 concentrations may have been constrained by stomatal limitations to gas exchange. The distribution of soluble protein and chlorophyll within leaves suggests that palisade and spongy mesophyll cells acclimated to their local light environment. The protein/chlorophyll ratio was high in the palisade layers and decreased in the spongy mesophyll cells, presumably corresponding to the attentuation of light as it penetrates leaves. Unlike some species, the chlorophyll a/b ratio and the degree of thylakoid stacking was uniform throughout the thickness of the leaf. It appears that sun-shade acclimation among cell layers of Silphium terebinthinaceum leaves is accomplished without adjustment to the chlorophyll a/b ratio or to thylakoid membrane structure.

The photosynthetic CO2-fixation rates, chlorophyll content, chloroplast ultrastructure and other leaf characteristics (e.g. variable fluorescence, stomata density, soluble carbohydrate content) were studied in a comparative way in sun and shade leaves of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and in high-light and low-light seedlings.
  1. Sun leaves of the beech possess a smaller leaf area, higher dry weight, lower water content, higher stomata density, higher chlorophyll a/b ratios and are thicker than the shade leaves. Sun leaves on the average contain more chlorophyll in a leaf area unit; the shade leaf exhibits more chlorophyll on a dry weight basis. Sun leaves show higher rates for dark respiration and a higher light saturation of photosynthetic CO2-fixation. Above 2000 lux they are more efficient in photosynthetic quantum conversion than the shade leaves.
  2. The development of HL-radish plants proceeds much faster than that of LL-plants. The cotyledons of HL-plants show a higher dry weight, lower water content, a higher ratio of chlorophyll a/b and a higher gross photosynthesis rate than the cotyledons of the LL-plants, which possess a higher chlorophyll content per dry weight basis. The large area of the HL-cotyledon on the one hand, as well as the higher stomata density and the higher respiration rate in the LL-cotyledon on the other hand, are not in agreement with the characteristics of sun and shade leaves respectively.
  3. The development, growth and wilting of wheat leaves and the appearance of the following leaves (leaf succession) is much faster at high quanta fluence rates than in weak light. The chlorophyll content is higher in the HL-leaf per unit leaf area and in the LL-leaf per g dry weight. There are no differences in the stomata density and leaf area between the HL- and LL-leaf. There are fewer differences between HL- and LL-leaves than in beech or radish leaves.
  4. The chloroplast ultrastructure of shade-type chloroplasts (shade leaves, LL-leaves) is not only characterized by a much higher number of thylakoids per granum and a higher stacking degree of thylakoids, but also by broader grana than in sun-type chloroplasts (sun leaves, HL-leaves). The chloroplasts of sun leaves and of HL-leaves exhibit large starch grains.
  5. Shade leaves and LL-leaves exhibit a higher maximum chlorophyll fluorescence and it takes more time for the fluorescence to decline to the steady state than in sun and HL-leaves. The variable fluorescence VF (ratio of fluorescence decrease to steady state fluorescence) is always higher in the sun and HL-leaf of the same physiological stage (maximum chlorophyll content of the leaf) than in the shade and LL-leaf. The fluorescence emission spectra of sun and HL-leaves show a higher proportion of chlorophyli fluorescence in the second emission maximum F2 than shade and LL-leaves.
  6. The level of soluble carbohydrates (reducing sugars) is significantly higher in sun and HL-leaves than in shade and LL-leaves and even reflects changes in the amounts of the daily incident light.
  7. Some but not all characteristics of mature sun and shade leaves are found in HL- and LL-leaves of seedlings. Leaf thickness, dry weight, chlorophyll content, soluble carbohydrate level, photosynthetic CO2-fixation, height and width of grana stacks and starch content, are good parameters to describe the differences between LL- and HL-leaves; with some reservations concerning age and physiological stage of leaf, a/b ratios, chlorophyll content per leaf area unit and the variable fluorescence are also suitable.

We evaluated the hypothesis that photosynthetic traits differ between leaves produced at the beginning (May) and the end (November–December) of the rainy season in the canopy of a seasonally dry forest in Panama. Leaves produced at the end of the wet season were predicted to have higher photosynthetic capacities and higher water-use efficiencies than leaves produced during the early rainy season. Such seasonal phenotypic differentiation may be adaptive, since leaves produced immediately preceding the dry season are likely to experience greater light availability during their lifetime due to reduced cloud cover during the dry season. We used a construction crane for access to the upper canopy and sampled 1- to 2-month-old leaves marked in monthly censuses for six common tree species with various ecological habits and leaf phenologies. Photosynthetic capacity was quantified as light- and CO2-saturated oxygen evolution rates with a leaf-disk oxygen electrode in the laboratory (O2max) and as light-saturated CO2 assimilation rates of intact leaves under ambient CO2 (Amax). In four species, pre-dry season leaves had significantly higher leaf mass per unit area. In these four species, O2max and Amax per unit area and maximum stomatal conductances were significantly greater in pre-dry season leaves than in early wet season leaves. In two species, Amax for a given stomatal conductance was greater in pre-dry season leaves than in early wet season leaves, suggesting a higher photosynthetic water-use efficiency in the former. Photosynthetic capacity per unit mass was not significantly different between seasons of leaf production in any species. In both early wet season and pre-dry season leaves, mean photosynthetic capacity per unit mass was positively correlated with nitrogen content per unit mass both within and among species. Seasonal phenotypic differentiation observed in canopy tree species is achieved through changes in leaf mass per unit area and increased maximum stomatal conductance rather than by changes in nitrogen allocation patterns.

Measurements were carried out of the gas exchange properties (namely, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration rates), water use efficiency and water relations of two mangrove species, Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal at Gazi Bay, Kenya. Rhizophora mucronata had significantly higher photosynthetic rates than C. tagal. Internal CO2 concentrations were higher during the wet season than the dry season in both species. Gas exchange properties were correlated positively with photon flux density in both species. Leaf water potentials were highest during the morning and lowest at midday and were also highest in the lower canopy leaves in both species. The two mangrove species had conservative water use. Management potential for the East African mangroves based on the results of this study is suggested.  相似文献

Photosynthesis in tissues under periderm of woody stems and shoots of perennial plants occurs in environment that is very different from the internal environment of leaf chloroplasts. These tissues are characterized by high CO2 and low O2 concentrations, more acidic surroundings, besides that only light which have passed through periderm reaches photosynthetic antennas. In contrast to leaves of deciduous plants chlorenchyma tissues of wintering plant organs are exposed to temperature fluctuations during all seasons, that is why the photosynthetic apparatus of woody stems has to be able to adapt to a wide range of environmental temperatures. In order to reveal unique features, which enable photosynthetic apparatus of chlorenchyma cells in woody plant organs to implement biological functions under different light and temperature conditions, we studied photosynthetic tissues of stem cortex in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) under normal conditions and after exposure to suboptimal temperatures and high light intensity. Comparative analysis of photosynthetic pigment composition and low-temperature chlorophyll fluorescence emission spectrum of leaves, young shoots and chlorenchyma of lignified shoots revealed relatively high level of chlorophyll b and carotenoids, and high photosystem II (PSII) to photosystem I (PSI) ratio in woody shoots. Analysis of parameters of variable chlorophyll fluorescence revealed high PSII activity in grapevine shoot cortex and demonstrated improved freeze tolerance and higher sensitivity to light of photosynthetic apparatus in grape vine in comparison to leaves. It was shown for the first time that photosynthetic apparatus in chlorenchyma cells of vine undergoes so-called “state-transition”–fast rearrangements leading to redistribution of energy between photosystems. Analysis of fatty acid (FA) compositions of lipids in examined tissues showed that the FA unsaturation index in green tissue of vine is lower than in leaves. A distinct feature of FA compositions of lipids in vine cortex was relatively high level of linoleic acid.  相似文献

Leaves developed at high irradiance (I) often have higher photosynthetic capacity than those developed at low I, while leaves developed at elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] often have reduced photosynthetic capacity compared with leaves developed at lower [CO2]. Because both high I and elevated [CO2] stimulate photosynthesis of developing leaves, their contrasting effects on photosynthetic capacity at maturity suggest that the extra photosynthate may be utilized differently depending on whether I or [CO2] stimulates photosynthesis. These experiments were designed to test whether relationships between photosynthetic income and the net accumulation of soluble protein in developing leaves, or relationships between soluble protein and photosynthetic capacity at full expansion differed depending on whether I or [CO2] was varied during leaf development. Soybean plants were grown initially with a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 950 µmol m–2 s–1 and 350 µmol [CO2] mol–1, then exposed to [CO2] ranging from 135 to 1400 µmol mol–1 for the last 3 d of expansion of third trifoliolate leaves. These results were compared with experiments in which I was varied at a constant [CO2] of 350 µmol mol–1 over the same developmental period. Increases in area and dry mass over the 3 d were determined along with daily photosynthesis and respiration. Photosynthetic CO2 exchange characteristics and soluble protein content of leaves were determined at the end of the treatment periods. The increase in leaflet mass was about 28 % of the dry mass income from photosynthesis minus respiration, regardless of whether [CO2] or I was varied, except that very low I or [CO2] increased this percentage. Leaflet soluble protein per unit of area at full expansion had the same positive linear relationship to photosynthetic income whether [CO2] or I was varied. For variation in I, photosynthetic capacity varied directly with soluble protein per unit area. This was not the case for variation in [CO2]. Increasing [CO2] reduced photosynthetic capacity per unit of soluble protein by up to a factor of 2.5, and photosynthetic capacity exhibited an optimum with respect to growth [CO2]. Thus CO2 did not alter the relationship between photosynthetic income and the utilization of photosynthate in the net accumulation of soluble protein, but did alter the relationship between soluble protein content and photosynthetic characteristics in this species.  相似文献

The effects of extreme phosphate (Pi) deficiency during growth on the contents of adenylates and pyridine nucleotides and the in vivo photochemical activity of photosystem II (PSII) were determined in leaves of Helianthus annuus and Zea mays grown under controlled environmental conditions. Phosphate deficiency decreased the amounts of ATP and ADP per unit leaf area and the adenylate energy charge of leaves. The amounts of oxidized pyridine nucleotides per unit leaf area decreased with Pi deficiency, but not those of reduced pyridine nucleotides. This resulted in an increase in the ratio of reduced to oxidized pyridine nucleotides in Pi-deficient leaves. Analysis of chlorophyll a fluorescence at room temperature showed that Pi deficiency decreased the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII reaction centres (φe), the in vivo quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (φPSII) and the photochemical quenching co-efficient (qP), and increased the non-photochemical quenching co-efficient (qN) indicating possible photoinhibitory damage to PSII. Supplying Pi to Pi-deficient sunflower leaves reversed the long-term effects of Pi-deficiency on PSII photochemistry. Feeding Pi-sufficient sunflower leaves with mannose or FCCP rapidly produced effects on chlorophyll a fluorescence similar to long-term Pi-deficiency. Our results suggest a direct role of Pi and photophosphorylation on PSII photochemistry in both long-and short-term responses of photosynthetic machinery to Pi deficiency. The relationship between φPSII and the apparent quantum yield of CO2 assimilation determined at varying light intensity and 21 kPa O2 and 35 Pa CO2 partial pressures in the ambient air was linear in Pi-sufficient and Pi-deficient leaves of sunflower and maize. Calculations show that there was relatively more PSII activity per mole of CO2 assimilated by the Pi-deficient leaves. This indicates that in these leaves a greater proportion of photosynthetic electrons transported across PSII was used for processes other than CO2 reduction. Therefore, we conclude that in vivo photosynthetic electron transport through PSII did not limit photosynthesis in Pi-deficient leaves of sunflower and maize and that the decreased CO2 assimilation was a consequence of a smaller ATP content and lower energy charge which restricted production of ribulose, 1-5, bisphosphate, the acceptor for CO2.  相似文献

Abstract: We used chlorophyll fluorescence imaging to examine the homogeneity of photosynthetic metabolism during CAM in the thick leaves of Kalanchoë daigremontiana Hamet et Perrier de la Bǎthie. Intense, persistent fluorescence from a DCMU treated thin leaf of Clematis sp placed beneath a K. daigremontiana leaf was readily detected through the thick leaf. Evidently reabsorption of fluorescence was qualitatively unimportant in the system used. Chlorophyll fluorescence images from 7 mm tissue discs excised from Kalanchoë leaves were collected at 60 s intervals during 20 min transients elicited by red excitation light. Information about patchiness and subsurface processes was gained by statistical factor analysis and Fourier transform. Although small, highly resolved rings of bright chlorophyll fluorescence surrounding discs of low fluorescence were observed from cells near the surface, no independent regional temporal variation in fluorescence was evident in the surface‐biased images. Temporally independent chlorophyll fluorescence was present in images biased towards sub‐epidermal sources, in most phases of CAM, and during endogenous rhythm. These asynchronous changes were several millimetres apart. This patchy fluorescence was confirmed when attached leaves were excited with blue light in a leaf chamber while CO2 and H2O exchange was monitored. Large spatio‐temporal variations in the efficiency of photosystem II were always observed during phases II and IV of CAM, when both CO2 fixation cycles are active, and during the maximum rate of CO2 fixation during the endogenous rhythm in continuous light. These data are discussed in terms of metabolic isolation in the thick but uniform tissues in which gas diffusion may be largely confined to wet cell walls, thereby rendering the tissue functionally heterobaric. Prolonged, but in some instances, reversible alterations in PSII efficiency could be produced by injection of metabolic inhibitors, confirming that patchy fluorescence may reflect the differing energy costs of photosynthesis in different CAM phases.  相似文献

The photosynthetic response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Brant) primary leaves was studied as a function of chlorosis induced by CO2 enrichment. Leaf yellowing, measured as changes of chlorophyll a and b, was more extensive in controlled environments at elevated (680 ± 17 µl l?1) than at ambient (380 ± 21 µl l?1) CO2. Stomatal conductance of primary leaves was decreased by growth in elevated CO2 between 11 and 18 days after sowing (DAS) when measured at both 380 and 680 µl l?1 CO2. Internal leaf CO2 concentration (Ci) was also lower for elevated- compared to ambient-CO2-grown primary leaves between 11 and 14 DAS. Results suggest that non-stomatal factors were responsible for the decreased photosynthetic rates of elevated- compared to ambient-CO2-grown primary leaves 18 DAS. Various photochemical measurements, including quantum absorptance (α), minimal (F0), maximal (Fm), and variable (Fv) chlorophyll fluorescence, as well as the Fv/Fm ratio, were significantly decreased 18 DAS in the elevated- compared to ambient-CO2 treatment. Photochemical (qP) and nonphotochemical (qN) chlorophyll fluorescence quenching coefficients of 18-day-old primary leaves did not differ between CO2 treatments. Photosynthetic electron transport rates of photosystem II were slightly lower for elevated- compared to ambient-CO2-grown primary leaves 18 DAS. Concentrations of α-amino N (i.e. free amino acids) in barley primary leaves were increased by CO2 enrichment 10 DAS, but subsequently, α-amino N decreased in association with photosynthetic decline. Total acid protease activity was greater in elevated- than in ambient-CO2-grown leaves 18 DAS. The above findings suggest that photoinhibition and premature senescence were factors in the CO2-dependent yellowing of barley primary leaves.  相似文献

Using non-invasive techniques (CO2 gas exchange, light scattering, light absorption, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll luminescence), we have analysed the response of respiration and photosynthesis to dehydration and rehydration of leaves of the resurrection plants Craterostigma plantagineum Hochst., Ramonda mykoni Reichb. and Ceterach officinarum Lam. et DC. and of the drought-sensitive mesophyte spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.). The following observations were made: (i) The rate of water loss during wilting of detached leaves of drought-tolerant resurrection plants was similar to that for leaves of the sensitive mesophyte, spinach. Leaves of Mediterranean xerophytes lost water much more slowly. (ii) Below a residual water content of about 20%, leaves of spinach did not recover turgor on rewatering, whereas leaves of the resurrection plants did. (iii) Respiration was less sensitive to the loss of water during wilting in the resurrection plants than in spinach. (iv) The sensitivity of photosynthesis to dehydration was similar in spinach and the resurrection plants. Up to a water loss of 50% from the leaves, photosynthesis was limited by stomatal closure, not by inhibition of reactions of the photosynthetic apparatus. Photosynthesis was inhibited and stomates reopened when loss of water became excessive. (v) After the leaves had lost 80% of their water or more, the light-dependent reactions of photosynthetic membranes were further inhibited by rewatering in spinach; they recovered in the resurrection plants. (vi) In desiccated leaves of the resurrection plants, slow rehydration reactivated mitochondrial gas exchange faster than photosynthetic membrane reactions. Photosynthetic carbon assimilation recovered only slowly.  相似文献

The CO2 exchange of pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) shoots was continuously monitored over several years. The spatial and temporal variability of gas exchange was thoroughly investigated for three forest types. The net uptake of CO2 by current-season shoots in a bilberry pine stand equaled 5.4 g CO2 per g dry wt for the growing season. The net CO2 assimilation by one-year-old shoots over a growing season constituted 9.9 and 2.4 g CO2/(g dry wt year) in the upper and lower crown parts, respectively. The nighttime respiration of the current-season shoots released 0.7 g CO2/(g dry wt year), and the respiration of one-year-old shoots in the upper and lower parts of the canopy released 0.45 and 0.36 g CO2/(g dry wt year), respectively. Recalculation of three-year data per entire crown yielded an annual average carbon assimilation of 1.54 g C/(g dry wt year). Water relations markedly affected CO2 fixation. Nevertheless, the daily average values of photosynthesis in the summer were similar for pine stands with bilberry, heather, and dwarf shrub–polytric as understory dominants. It is shown that the realization of changes in photosynthetic function is related in time to growth processes.  相似文献
