Insects use chemosensory cues to feed and mate. In Drosophila, the effect of pheromones has been extensively investigated in adults, but rarely in larvae. The colonization of natural food sources by Drosophila buzzatii and Drosophila simulans species may depend on species-specific chemical cues left in the food by larvae and adults. We identified such chemicals in both species and measured their influence on larval food preference and puparation behaviour. We also tested compounds that varied between these species: (i) two larval volatile compounds: hydroxy-3-butanone-2 and phenol (predominant in D. simulans and D. buzzatii, respectively), and (ii) adult cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs). Drosophila buzzatii larvae were rapidly attracted to non-CH adult conspecific cues, whereas D. simulans larvae were strongly repulsed by CHs of the two species and also by phenol. Larval cues from both species generally reduced larval attraction and pupariation on food, which was generally—but not always—low, and rarely reflected larval response. As these larval and adult pheromones specifically influence larval food search and the choice of a pupariation site, they may greatly affect the dispersion and survival of Drosophila species in nature.  相似文献

SUMMARY The origin of marine invertebrate larvae has been an area of controversy in developmental evolution for over a century. Here, we address the question of whether a pelagic "larval" or benthic "adult" morphology originated first in metazoan lineages by testing the hypothesis that particular gene co-option patterns will be associated with the origin of feeding, indirect developing larval forms. Empirical evidence bearing on this hypothesis is derivable from gene expression studies of the sea urchin larval gut of two closely related but differently developing congenerics, Heliocidaris tuberculata (feeding indirect-developing larva) and H. erythrogramma (nonfeeding direct developer), given two subsidiary hypotheses. (1) If larval gut gene expression in H. tuberculata was co-opted from an ancestral adult expression pattern, then the gut expression pattern will remain in adult H. erythrogramma despite its direct development. (2) Genes expressed in the larval gut of H. tuberculata will not have a coordinated expression pattern in H. erythrogramma larvae due to loss of a functional gut. Five structural genes expressed in the invaginating archenteron of H. tuberculata during gastrulation exhibit substantially different expression patterns in H. erythrogramma with only one remaining endoderm specific. Expression of these genes in the adult of H. erythrogramma and larval gut of H. tuberculata , but not in H. erythrogramma larval endoderm, supports the hypothesis that they first played roles in the formation of adult structures and were subsequently recruited into larval ontogeny during the origin and evolution of feeding planktotrophic deuterostome larvae.  相似文献

Silicified trilobite faunas yield a well preserved and abundant record of early development in many taxa. Although their morphologies are well known, protaspid larvae are poorly understood in terms of trilobite life history and developmental biology. Two distinct morphologic types are recognized among the great diversity of protaspides studied; these are termed adult‐like and nonadult‐tike according to gross similarity to later developmental stages. Transitions between nonadult‐like and adult‐like morphologies are abrupt, occurring between successsive instars, and, thereby, constitute metamorphoses.

By analogy with developmental patterns among modern marine arthropod taxa, metamorphoses during early trilobite ontogeny correspond to radical modifications in life mode and ecology. Adult‐like trilobite protaspides possess a dorso‐ventrally flattened tergum which displays a coarsely featured prosopon and surface‐parallel spines; these are interpreted as benthic larvae. In contrast, nonadult‐like protaspid larvae display an ovoid to spheroidal shape with spine pairs that project at right angles to one another; these are considered to have been planktonic. Protaspid morphologies are compared and discussed in light of these inferred modes of life.  相似文献

Larval red drum Sciaenops ocellatus survival, turning rate, routine swimming speed, escape response latency and escape response distance were significantly correlated with essential fatty‐acid (EFA) concentrations in eggs. Of the five traits that varied with egg EFA content, two (escape response latency and routine swimming speed) were significantly different when larvae were fed enriched diets compared with the low fatty‐acid diet, indicating that the larval diet can compensate for some imbalances in egg composition. Turning rate during routine swimming and escape response distance, however, did not change when larvae predicted to have low performance (based on egg composition) were fed an enriched diet, indicating that these effects of egg composition may be irreversible. Escape response distances and survival rates of larvae predicted to perform well (based on egg composition) and fed highly enriched diets were lower than expected, suggesting that high levels of EFA intake can be detrimental. Altogether, these results suggest that both maternal diet, which is responsible for egg EFA composition, and larval diet may play a role in larval survivorship and recruitment.  相似文献

Colonization by the zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, was quantified for five dragonfly species that differed in size and larval habits in a Michigan lake. Both larger size and a non-burrowing habit independently increased susceptibility to colonization. In 2005, over 50% of the final instars of the sprawlers Didymops transversa and Hagenius brevistylus were colonized, as well as younger instars. Rarely colonized were Progomphus obscurus and Dromogomphus spinosus, whose larvae burrow under sand, and the sprawler Epitheca princeps, whose final instars were lightly covered with sand. Hagenius larvae that had been preyed upon carried more mussels than those dying of other causes. More generally, mussel attachment decreased the probability that sprawlers left the water to emerge, the distance that some species traveled before emerging, and the ability of an overturned sprawler to right itself. On average, final instars of Didymops and Hagenius remaining in the water carried three times as many mussels as individuals known to emerge. Compared to uncolonized individuals, Epitheca and Progomphus with mussels emerged closer to the water line. Among colonized Didymops, the distance traveled on land before emerging decreased with increasing mussel load. Of the colonized Didymops that could right themselves, righting time increased with mussel load. Because the two common species of sprawlers were disproportionately colonized, and mussel attachment decreased their chances of emerging, our results suggest that D. polymorpha has the potential to affect the community structure of this guild of aquatic and terrestrial predators. A chemically defined synthetic rearing medium was used to compare larval growth of Aedes aegypti with or without crude animal lecithin or synthetic dipalmitoyl lecithin. Pupal weights, adult female life spans and oviposition histories of pupae and adults derived from synthetic diet rearings and from crude culture (liver powder) rearings were also compared. Both lecithins improved larval growth rate; optimal concentrations reduced time to pupation by 2 and 1 days for animal and synthetic lecithins respectively, and animal lecithin was better tolerated by the mosquito larvae at the higher concentrations tested. Addition of crude animal lecithin to the basal synthetic rearing medium had little effect on the weights of male and female pupae, but it increased adult female life spans and improved weekly egg production. In no case did mosquitoes from axenic rearings in synthetic media deviate greatly from limits specified by earlier workers for field-derived mosquitoes.

Reproduction and larval rearing of amphibians   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Reproduction technologies for amphibians are increasingly used for the in vitro treatment of ovulation, spermiation, oocytes, eggs, sperm, and larvae. Recent advances in these reproduction technologies have been driven by (1) difficulties with achieving reliable reproduction of threatened species in captive breeding programs, (2) the need for the efficient reproduction of laboratory model species, and (3) the cost of maintaining increasing numbers of amphibian gene lines for both research and conservation. Many amphibians are particularly well suited to the use of reproduction technologies due to external fertilization and development. However, due to limitations in our knowledge of reproductive mechanisms, it is still necessary to reproduce many species in captivity by the simulation of natural reproductive cues. Recent advances in reproduction technologies for amphibians include improved hormonal induction of oocytes and sperm, storage of sperm and oocytes, artificial fertilization, and high-density rearing of larvae to metamorphosis. The storage of sperm in particular can both increase the security and reduce the cost of maintaining genetic diversity. It is possible to cryopreserve sperm for millennia, or store it unfrozen for weeks in refrigerators. The storage of sperm can enable multiple parentages of individual females' clutches of eggs and reduce the need to transport animals. Cryopreserved sperm can maintain the gene pool indefinitely, reduce the optimum number of males in captive breeding programs, and usher in new generations of Xenopus spp. germ lines for research. Improved in vitro fertilization using genetic diversity from stored sperm means that investigators need the oocytes from only a few females to produce genetically diverse progeny. In both research and captive breeding programs, it is necessary to provide suitable conditions for the rearing of large numbers of a diverse range of species. Compared with traditional systems, the raising of larvae at high densities has the potential to produce these large numbers of larvae in smaller spaces and to reduce costs.  相似文献

Echinoderm larvae share numerous features of neuroanatomy. However, there are substantial differences in specific aspects of neural structure and ontogeny between the dipleurula-like larvae of asteroids and the pluteus larvae of echinoids. To help identify apomorphic features, we have examined the ontogeny of the dipleurula-like auricularia larva of the sea cucumber, Holothuria atra. Neural precursors arise in the apical ectoderm of gastrulae and appear to originate in bilateral clusters of cells. The cells differentiate without extensive migration, and they align with the developing ciliary bands and begin neurogenesis. Neurites project along the ciliary bands and do not appear to extend beneath either the oral or aboral epidermis. Apical serotonergic cells are associated with the preoral loops of the ciliary bands and do not form a substantial commissure. Paired, tripartite connectives form on either side of the larval mouth that connect the pre-oral, post-oral, and lateral ciliary bands. Holothurian larvae share with hemichordates and bipinnariae a similar organization of the apical organ, suggesting that the more highly structured apical organ of the pluteus is a derived feature. However, the auricularia larva shares with the pluteus larva of echinoids several features of neural ontogeny. Both have a bilateral origin of neural precursors in ectoderm adjacent to presumptive ciliary bands, and the presumptive neurons move only a few cell diameters before undergoing neurogenesis. The development of the holothurian nervous systems suggests that the extensive migration of neural precursors in asteroids is a derived feature. A larval specific high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been isolated from Musca domestica hemolymph by a combination of density gradient and glycerol gradient ultracentrifugations. The larval lipoprotein has a density of 1.134 g/ml and is formed by at least four apoproteins with molecular weights equal to 26,000, 23,000, 21,000, and 20,000. This lipoprotein contains large amounts of hydrocarbons and phospholipids and minor amounts of diacylglycerols and cholesterol. The larval lipoprotein is completely distinct from lipophorin in regard to apoprotein composition, lipid moiety, physiological pattern, and immunological reactions. Larval lipoprotein is accumulated until the end of the feeding period. During the pupal molt this protein is utilized and is no longer detected after 2 days of pupal stadium. The results obtained imply a possible role of this protein in the puparia and/or pupal cuticle formation. Judging from the properties shown, the Musca domestica larval lipoprotein is a completely new type of insect lipoprotein.  相似文献

The genetics of adaptation to tomato in Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) were investigated in reciprocal F1, F2, and backcross populations generated from crosses between beetles from a tomato adapted population and from a population that was poorly adapted to tomato. Larvae from the parent and test populations were reared on tomato for four days, after which survivorship and larval weights were recorded. Most results indicate that differences in larval growth and survival on tomato between the parent populations are largely determined by autosomal, polygenic mechanisms, the inheritance of which involves a significant dominance component. However, results from F2 crosses are not consistent with this conclusion. A significant difference in larval weights, but not in survival, between reciprocal F1 populations in an analysis of combined data from four separate experiments suggests that maternal cytoplasmic effects may contribute to differences in larval performance on tomato between the adapted and unadapted populations. The unusual results obtained from F2 crosses in this study are not atypical of results from previous studies of the genetics of adaptation to host plants by the Colorado potato beetle. Host plant adaptation by Colorado potato beetles may therefore involve unusual genetic mechanisms that are not easily assessed by classical Mendelian analysis.  相似文献

Adult oviposition preferences are expected to correlate with host plant suitability for the development of their offspring. For most lepidopteran species, this is particularly important as the hatching neonate larvae of many species are relatively immobile. Thus, the site of oviposition chosen by a female adult can greatly influence the probability of survival for her offspring. In the present study, we investigated the oviposition preference of adult Trichoplusia ni moths for six plant species to determine whether they could accurately rank the suitability of the plants for larval development. We also compared oviposition preferences to neonate larval acceptance and preference to determine whether the adult host range matched that of larval diet breath. Our results indicate that in two-choice and no-choice tests adult T. ni were able to rank the plants accurately, with the exception of anise hyssop. However, when given a choice of all six plants together, they laid more eggs on a plant that was not suitable for larval survival. Larvae accepted and fed on all plants in no-choice tests, and accurately ranked them according to larval performance. We conclude that neonate larvae are better able than adults to rank plants according to larval performance, and that larval diet breadth is wider than the range of plants accepted by adults. We also provide a discussion of the reduced accuracy of adult oviposition preference with increased plant choices.  相似文献

Electrophoretic analyses of haemoglobin and globin phenotypes in families of Xenopus borealis and Xenopus l. laevis revealed two developmental haemoglobin transitions during ontogeny. The first transition occurs at the developmental stage when tadpoles begin to feed. It is characterized by the decline of embryonic-specific globins in favour of novel, tadpole-specific globins (X. borealis) correlated to changes in the haemoglobin pattern. We suppose that this switch results from the replacement of a primitive, ventral blood island-dependent erythrocyte population by tadpole erythrocytes from other erythropoietic sites. Several other globin chains and haemoglobins are present in both young tadpoles and throughout larval life. The second, well-known transition occurs during metamorphosis, where all tadpole haemoglobins are replaced by adult haemoglobins composed of entirely different globin chains.  相似文献

We conducted an artificial pond experiment to test hypotheses about the effects of competition and non-lethal predator cues on metamorphic characteristics of sympatric Oregon spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) and red-legged frogs (Rana aurora) in southwestern British Columbia. Tadpoles were exposed to the presence or absence of one another, two density levels and to the presence or absence of predacious odonate larvae (Aeshna palmata) isolated in enclosures. In the artificial pond study, R. aurora were significantly larger at metamorphosis (12%) and exhibited only slightly longer larval periods when exposed to Aeshna. In the presence of R. pretiosa, they significantly decreased time to metamorphosis, and were significantly larger at metamorphosis (12%) than those reared alone. Rana pretiosa in treatments with R. aurora were somewhat larger at metamorphosis when a non-lethal predator was present, and in treatments where R. pretiosa were alone with a predator tadpole mass at metamorphosis was smaller than those in the absence of Aeshna, but these results were not statistically significant. Both species reduced activity and moved away from the predator in the presence of an enclosed dragonfly larva in the laboratory. Most tadpole mesocosm experiments have found that the trade-off between size and timing of metamorphosis is extremely important to amphibians, but we suggest that the trade-off discussed in traditional amphibian models may not apply to species like R. pretiosa that are exposed to the same gape-limited predators upon reaching metamorphosis.  相似文献

Many ladybird beetles respond to a potential predation event by `reflex bleeding' or secreting a noxious defensive chemical that is similar to hemolymph. Both adults and larvae show this response. Reflex bleeding is known to reduce predator attack rates and increase prey survival after an attack, especially when reflex bleeding is employed in combination with other cues such as odor and warning coloration. In this experiment, we examined how variability in the number of reflex bleeding events and food quality in the larval stage of the aposematic ladybird beetle Harmonia axyridis affected elytral color, development time, and terminal size in adults. Effects of reflex bleeding were subtle and may have been influenced by diet treatments. Adult color did not differ between bleed treatment groups but beetles that reflex bled tended to take longer to develop and grow to smaller sizes than control group beetles. There were clear and strong effects of larval diet on adult phenotype: an ad libitum pollen diet resulted in paler adult coloration, shorter development time, and larger adult size relative to a limited-availability aphid diet. Our results suggest that the best environment for producing bright-red coloration may not be the best environment for favorable expression of life history characters, especially under stressful conditions. Interactions between different life history stages of H. axyridis are also discussed. Received: 20 April 1997 / Accepted: 30 September 1997  相似文献
