It has been reported that pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis, in Lake Ogawara, Japan, appear in small and large size groups during spawning despite being an annual fish. It is hypothesized that pond smelt have a bimodal life history, anadromous for large size groups and resident in the lake for small size groups. We calculated the body length and growth rate of the small and large size groups through the use of daily otolith increments and compared growth parameters between groups. In addition, the growth processes of resident fish in Lake Ogawara and anadromous fish in the adjacent sea were examined and compared with small and large size groups, respectively. We found that the two size groups diverged after 40–50 days from hatching with significant size groups present after 50 days. Through otolith increment analysis the growth processes of the small and large size groups were correlated with resident and anadromous forms respectively. These results revealed the utility of otolith increment analyses to clarify population structure of this species.  相似文献

In Lake Nojiri, the Japanese smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis McAllister, 1963, population has been thought to be maintained by artificial spawning, and stocking efforts as natural spawning in in-flowing streams is unlikely due to the lack of inflowing stream habitat. In this study, novel resident Japanese smelt spawning was observed along the lakeshore in shallow areas with clean gravel and flow. Spawning occurred at night during early March to mid-April and eggs, confirmed on gravel substrate, progressed to the eyed state in 5–6 weeks. Although natural spawning was observed, the ratio of eggs that progressed to the eyed stage was minimal, possibly due to thick algae cover in areas with low flow velocity. Therefore, resident Japanese smelt spawning along the lake shoreline is physically possible and potentially contributes to the overall population in Lake Nojiri, but in-lake spawning alone presumably is not a biologically viable method for population sustainability due to low survival rates and egg density at present. Environmental improvements such as construction of fish ladders to suitable in-flowing spawning habitat, introduction of clean gravel to shorelines, and water level management adjusted to the smelt spawning run would contribute to higher recruitment by natural smelt reproduction, and consequently enhance the smelt production in Lake Nojiri.

Sequencing of two regions of mitochondrial DNA, CytB (1124 bp) and COI (629 bp), is conducted for the first time for pond smelt Hypomesus olidus (Osmeridae) from the Commander Islands. The haplotypes identified, H1 and H2, differ by one mutation in the region of the COI gene. Haplotype H1 that belongs to the pond smelt from the Commander Islands was previously massively found in pond smelt of Azabache Lake. Haplotype H2 was not found previously and is probably unique to pond smelt from the Commander Islands.  相似文献

To study the site selection and timing of spawning by rainbow smelt, Osmerus modax, in a freshwater system, smelt were sampled with fyke nets during the spawning run in spring 2002 and 2003. The sex ratio of smelt favored males in the early and late segments of the run, with over 90% of smelt caught being male. At the peak in the catch, females comprised 57% of the smelt collected. The gonadosomatic index of males and females declined significantly on the day of peak catch, signaling the peak in spawning activity. Higher catches of smelt occurred on cobble-dominated substrates during the peak of the run, but no site selection was apparent earlier or later. Groundwater outflow did not appear to affect catches. Our study suggests that smelt come inshore but do not select specific spawning substrates prior to or after the peak in spawning. Smelt do select cobble sites during the highest rates of spawning. The relation between the peak in spawning and site selection could have application in planning removal strategies for the species.  相似文献

Smelt Osmerus eperlanus has two different life history strategies in the Netherlands. The migrating population inhabits the Wadden Sea and spawns in freshwater areas. After the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, part of the smelt population became landlocked. The fresh water smelt population has been in severe decline since 1990, and has strongly negatively impacted the numbers of piscivorous water birds relying on smelt as their main prey. The lakes that were formed after the dike closure, IJsselmeer and Markermeer have been assigned as Natura 2000 sites, based on their importance for (among others) piscivorous water birds. Because of the declining fresh water smelt population, the question arose whether this population is still supported by the diadromous population. Opportunities for exchange between fresh water and the sea are however limited to discharge sluices. The relationship between the diadromous and landlocked smelt population was analysed by means of otolith microchemistry. Our interpretation of otolith strontium (88Sr) patterns from smelt specimens collected in the fresh water area of Lake IJsselmeer and Markermeer, compared to those collected in the nearby marine environment, is that there is currently no evidence for a substantial contribution from the diadromous population to the spawning stock of the landlocked population.  相似文献

We report on the spawning ecology, genetic characteristics, and predation threats to spawning groups of rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, in Lake Utopia, New Brunswick where a dwarf morpho-type has been listed as a threatened species. Two spawning groups in three inlet streams had been previously identified; we observed three groups using four inlet streams. The earliest group was the largest in body size (12–29 cm fork length (FL)), lowest in numbers (~1 000), and completed spawning approximately two weeks before the second group. The early spawners were previously identified as the normal morpho-type, but we now classify these as a giant morpho-type. The second group spawned in three different streams. They were intermediate in body size (10–15 cm FL) and numbers (~10 000). The dwarf group began spawning as the intermediate group completed spawning and within the same three streams. The dwarfs were numerous (~1 000 000), small in size (<12 cm), and with higher gill raker counts. Microsatellite analyses suggested that gene flow among groups occurred, but genetic divergence was high and genetic separation among populations of the same group among streams and within a stream occurred. Stable isotopes and stomach contents indicated the dwarf group were likely consumed by a variety of fishes, but they were not the sole food resource of any predator including a population of landlocked salmon. These are some of the complexities of smelt ecology, but there are clearly life history tactics that we do not yet understand.  相似文献

The pond smelt Hypomesus olidus and minnow Zacco platypus were collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes in January 2003, and their metacercarial infections was examined by the muscle compression and artificial digestion techniques. In the Soyang Lake, 161 metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis (0.35 per fish) were harvested from 459 pond smelts examined. Also, 13 metacercariae of C. sinensis (0.43 per fish), 1 of Metagonimus sp., 4 of Echinostoma sp., 148 of Centrocestus armatus and 44 unidentified species were collected from 30 minnows. In the Daechung Lake, 369 metacercariae of C. sinensis (3.69 per fish) and 51 unidentified species were recovered from 100 pond smelts. The metacercariae of C. sinensis were fed to experimental rats, in which the adult flukes were identified. The pond smelts and minnows collected from the Soyang and Daechung Lakes were verified to be the second intermediate hosts and the sources of human C. sinensis infection.  相似文献

We analysed lake smelt (Osmerus eperlanus eperlanus m. spirinchus Pallas.) population dynamics in relation to water level and temperature in Lake Peipsi, Estonia/Russia, using commercial fishery statistics from 1931 to 2004 (excluding 1940–1945). Over this period, smelt provided the greatest catch of commercial fish although its stock and catches have gradually decreased. At times, catches of smelt were quite variable with a cyclic character. Disappearance of smelt from catches in years 1973–1975 was the result of summer fish kill. Regression analysis revealed a significant negative effect of high temperature on the abundance of smelt stock, while the effect of water level was not significant. Our results suggest that critical factors for the smelt population are the absolute value of water temperature in the hottest period (≥20°C) of summer and the duration of this period. These weather parameters have increased in synchrony with smelt decline during the last 7 decades. There appeared to be a significant negative effect of hot summers on the abundance of smelt operating with a lag of one and 2 years, which can be explained by the short life cycle (mainly 1–2 years) of this species.  相似文献

The European smelt Osmerus eperlanus had been accidentally introduced into the ecosystem of the Syamozero Lake (Karelia). The population of this species has achieved a high density and caused serious changes in the structure and trophic relationships of fish community of the Syamozero ecosystem. The microsporidia Glugea hertwigi Weisenberg, 1921 has become a new and super-dominant parasite of the european smelt in this ecosystem. The invasion of microsporidia has caused a mass death of fishes, that has led to changes in population structure of the smelt and lowered a fish catch. The present study suggests to show a role of parasites in the ichthyocenosis structure regulation in freshwater ecosystem.  相似文献

“Netcor” computer-aided hydroacoustic system has been used to study the pattern of spawning migration in the Shuya River of the Atlantic salmon Salmo Salar inhabiting Onega Lake. The migrants’ length frequency and abundance have been evaluated, and the pattern of their spawning run, as referring to observation days and the time of day, has been determined. The data obtained with the use of the hydroacoustic system have been compared with those from a fish-counting trap at a fish-counting barrier (FCB). Hydroacoustic systems have been shown to perform better in studies of anadromous fish migration and in the determination of migrants’ abundance and the cycling and direction of their movements.  相似文献

Pond smelt,Hypomesus nipponensis McAllister, in Lake Ogawara demonstrate alternative life history strategies, as evidenced by the coexistence of anadromous and resident fish. However, it is unknown if anadromous and resident groups interbreed. In this study, maturation and spawning processes were examined and compared between anadromous and resident groups. Histological observations indicated negligible variation in the maturational stage composition of oocytes, the frequency of oocyte diameter being unimodal for all specimens at different maturational stages. Oocytes were absent in the ovaries of spent fish. Accordingly, the species can be considered a semelparous spawner with unimodal oocyte diameter distribution. Temporal changes in the proportion of spent fish were compared between anadromous and resident groups. Spawning of both groups began in late March and peaked over April 8–12. Although both groups did not differ significantly in the period of peak spawning, anadromous fish finished spawning earlier than resident ones. Anadromous fish were not able to spawn upon migration into Lake Ogawara, and quickly matured after immigration, contrasting with resident fish.  相似文献

An extensive mortality of young-of-the-year rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) occurred in Lake Erie during the fall of 1969. Dead and dying smelt were observed along the north shore from west of Long Point in the central basin to Port Maitland in the eastern basin. No other fish species was involved. Glugea hertwigi, a microsporidan parasite, was observed in 90% of the distressed smelt examined, and is believed to have been a major contributing factor to the mortality.  相似文献

Introductions or alien species invasions will induce changes in aquatic ecosystems but are rarely reported in Chinese highland lakes. The Japanese smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis) invaded and has become a dominant fish species in Lake Erhai, a highland lake in southwestern China, since 2016. Here, we engineered Ecopath models for two different periods, 2008–2009 (preinvasion) and 2016–2018 (postinvasion), in Lake Erhai to model ecosystem impacts from the Japanese smelt invasion. In the dynamic Ecosim model based on the 2016–2018 Ecopath model, we ran three 50-year scenarios to simulate the potential effects of Japanese smelts on the system. Our results showed competition between invasive and native species as well as changes in trophic structures, highlighting the impacts of the invasive species over time. The lake ecosystem additionally experienced significant degradation after invasion, mainly reflected in several related indicators, such as total biomass/total system throughput (TB/TST), total primary production/total biomass (TPP/TB), total primary production/total respiration (TPP/TR), Finn's mean path length (FML), Finn's cycling index (FCI) and the Connectance Index (CI). The simulation results indicated that the relative biomass of icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), sharpbelly (Hemiculter leucisculus), and zooplankton were significantly affected by increasing the strength of the top-down control of the Japanese smelt on its prey. It is also important to do ecological regulation of planktivorous fishes in the studied Lake Erhai, especially the Japanese smelt.  相似文献

In the eastern Gulf of Finland, European smelt Osmerus eperlanus occurs as an anadromous ecological form that spawns in coastal, low-salinity zones and in several rivers entering the gulf, most importantly in the River Neva. Osmerus eperlanus is a key commercial fish species for the population of St. Petersburg, and the city's fish symbol. However, the state of the smelt stock has considerably deteriorated over the past few decades. Monitoring shows that annual catches during 1965–1992 averaged 2274 t, compared to 292 t in 2002–2017, although some improvement is inidicated by a gradual increase in catches in recent years (e.g., to 595 t in 2017). This paper addresses long-term and recent changes in the fisheries for smelt in the eastern Gulf of Finland, including both commercial and recreational fisheries, and the range of fishing gears used. The commercial smelt fishery is mainly conducted during the spawning period (April–May) on migrating fish, using trap nets of various designs and beach seines. There has been an increase in recreational fisheries for smelt; in years when ice cover on the gulf during winter (December–April) is steady, recreational fishers from St. Petersburg, using hook and line, may catch quantities that are comparable to those of commercial catches. Several factors may account for the stock dynamics and associated changes in catches of smelt: these include a decrease in prey availability in the gulf; loss and degradation of spawning and nursery habitats, partly associated with large-scale hydroengineering operations in Neva Bay; and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing which became widespread in post-Soviet decades. In spite of a gradual increase in smelt abundance in the most recent 15 years, a failure to accurately monitor and manage the extent of IUU and recreational fishing for smelt, to assess the status of the stock, or to forecast catches, increases the risk of overfishing of the spawning stock.  相似文献

A critical analysis of literature data on the distribution, morphology, and phylogeography of the Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) and five species of marine and anadromous fish such as navaga (Eleginus navaga), pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax dentex), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), and pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has been performed. The results show that all these species have colonized Northern European seas, distributing along the Arctic coastline of Eurasia after the glacier retreat. The reasons that the dispersal of these species in the Atlantic Ocean may be impeded (preference for a cold environment, competition, and decrease of the evolutionary potential) are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis Koaro, Galaxias brevipinnis, were once the only fish present in Lake Rotopounamu but, after a comprehensive survey in 1990, none were found in the lake or its tributary streams. Introduced native fish, specifically smelt, Retropinna retropinna, and the common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, now occur in this lake. As koaro co-exist with bullies in other lakes, but have declined in landlocked lakes containing smelt, the disappearance of koaro in Lake Rotopounamu is attributed to the introduction of smelt alone. Interspecific competition for food between 0 + year old koaro and smelt, combined with predation by 2 + year old smelt on koaro larvae, are thought to be responsible. Such a mechanism would be consistent with theoretical predictions of predator-prey regulation systems within same chain food webs. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, which were introduced into a number of local lakes before smelt, and which preyed on the koaro, have been blamed for the decline of the koaro populations. However, the disappearance of koaro in Lake Rotopounamu shows that smelt can reduce koaro populations independently of trout predation.  相似文献

Close observation of the breeding activities of specimens of Tilapia discolour obtained from Lake Bosomtwe and held captive in glass aquaria, a net cage and a pond showed that this species practises substrate-brooding; the eggs were incubated and hatched in prepared nests. However, brief egg-carrying tendencies were observed; both the male and female brood fish carried the eggs in their mouths from the sites of spawning to new sites. Both sexes also made and guarded the nests, incubated the eggs and provided protection to the young fry.  相似文献

The genetic analysis is made on the population of the European smelt Osmerus eperlanus occasionally introduced to Lake Syamozero (Karelia) and of the vendace Coregous albula supposedly acclimatized in Solovetskie Islands as a result of fish cultural activities of the Solovetskii Monastery. They are compared with several natural populations—possible donors for both introductions. Genetic variation in a sample of smelt was estimated by means of restrictase analysis of mtDNA (fragment ND1/ND2) in samples of vendace—by means of allozyme analysis of six isoenzyme systems. The probable population for the Syamozero smelt is the population of Onega Lake in spite of the previously noted greater morphological similarity of colonizers with the smelt of Ladoga Lake. A high level of genetic variation in the Syamozero smelt in comparison with native populations indicates that, beside the introduction from Onega Lake, there were repeated introductions from neighboring water bodies. The genetic analysis of the Solovetskaya vendace does not prove that the vendace appeared on islands due to acclimatization. Frequencies of alleles of allozyme loci in the Solovetskaya population significantly differ from frequencies in continental populations. Still, it is compared with some populations of the Arkhangelsk oblast. Estimations of genetic diversity of the Solovetskaya vendace turned out to be comparable with those in native populations.  相似文献
