Summary The developmental pattern of the neuter castes was studied in the mandibulate nasute generaCornitermes, Embiratermes andRhynchotermes. InCornitermes walkeri, all the workers and soldiers are male. There are two larval and a single worker instar. Workers can molt into presoldiers. InEmbiratermes chagresi andRhynchotermes perarmatus, both sexes are present among the neuters. A slight sexual dimorphism (males > females) is discernible among both larval instars and among workers ofE. chagresi; female workers can molt into presoldiers. InR. perarmatus, the sexual dimorphism is conspicuous from the first larval instar on. Male larvae go through two instars, then give rise to workers, which do not molt. InR. perarmatus, there is no worker stage in females, but a third larval instar, preceding the presoldier. Hypotheses are proposed as to the evolution of these caste patterns, attempting to conciliate present knowledge of Nasutitermitinae phylogeny and known evolutionary trends affecting termite caste patterns, according to the species' ecology.Research Associate: National Fund for Scientific Research (Belgium).  相似文献

North European Leptoceridae (Trichoptera) perform three types of swarming flight patterns: (1) swarming males of Athripsodesand Ceracleafly in horizontal zigzag patterns over the water surface, (2) the Mystacidesspp. perform vertical zigzag movements, and (3) the flight of males of Triaenodes unanimisMcLach. is a mixture of the horizontal and vertical zigzagging. Also three groups of pair formation behavior can be distinguished. In the first group, of Athripsodesand Ceraclea, the females fly into the male swarms, where they are grasped and carried to the riparian vegetation by the flying males with the females hanging upside-down in genitalia coupling. In the second group, a Mystacidesfemale is caught by a male, when approaching a swarm and both use their wings to fly in tandem to the shore where they copulate. In the third group, of Triaenodes bicolor(Curt.) and Oecetis lacustris(Curt.), the males fly searching for females sitting on aquatic plants and when a female is found the male lands and they copulate immediately while clinging to the plant. The different swarming and mating behaviors might have favored selection for three types of sexual dimorphism: (1) longer forewings in males than females in species which fly in copula, (2) larger eyes in males of the vertically zigzagging species, and (3) much smaller males in the group where males search for females sitting on aquatic plants. In the second group approaching females are detected by males before reaching the swarm and in the third group the female almost always mates with the male which is the first to find her. In conclusion, we suggest that females of Athripsodesand Ceracleahave a greater choice among swarming males than do females of Mystacides, T. bicolor, and O. Lacustris.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in four species of rockfish genusSebastes (Scorpaenidae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Sexual dimorphisms, and factors influencing the evolution of these differences, have been investigated for four species of rockfish:Sebastes melanops, S. flavidus, S. mystinus, andS. serranoides. These four species, which have similar ecology, tend to aggregate by species with males and females staying together throughout the year. In all four species adult females reach larger sizes than males, which probably relates to their role in reproduction. The number of eggs produced increases with size, so that natural selection has favored larger females. It appears males were subjected to different selective pressures than females. It was more advantageous for males to mature quickly, to become reproductive, than to expend energy on growth. Other sexually dimorphic features include larger eyes in males of all four species and longer pectoral fin rays in males of the three piscivorous species:S. melanops, S. flavidus, andS. serranoides. The larger pectoral fins may permit smaller males to coexist with females by increasing acceleration and, together with the proportionately larger eye, enable the male to compete successfully with the female to capture elusive prey (the latter not necessarily useful for the planktivoreS. mystinus). Since the size of the eye is equivalent in both sexes of the same age, visual perception should be comparable for both sexes.  相似文献

Nine species of didymozoid trematodes referable to the genusDidymocystis Ariola, 1902 are reported from scombrid fishes of the Visakhapatnam coast, Bay of Bengal, India. They are:Didymocystis wedli fromThunnus tonggol; D. dissimilis fromKatsuwonus pelamis; D. alalongae fromT. tonggol; D. superpalati fromT. tonggol; D. bifurcata fromT. tonggol; D. oesophagicola fromT. tonggol; D. pinnicola fromK. pelamis; D. exiguus fromAuxis thazard andEuthynnus affinis; and a new species,D. guttatus, fromScomberomorus guttatus. The generaLagenocystis Yamaguti, 1970,Oesophagocystis Yamaguti, 1970 andDidymosulcus Pozdnyakov, 1990 are synonymised withDidymocystis. The synonymies ofUnivitellodidymocystis Yamaguti, 1970 andDidymocystoides Yamaguti, 1970, but notCoeliodidymocystis Yamaguti, 1970, withDidymocystis, as proposed by Pozdnyakov (1990), are accepted.Didymocystis bifasciatus (Yamaguti, 1970) is considered a synonym ofD. alalongae Yamaguti, 1970 andD. philobranchia Yamaguti, 1970 ofD. bifurcata Yamaguti, 1970. Of the nine species reported, eight constitute new reports from the Bay of Bengal. A key to the species ofDidymocystis from scombrid fishes of the Visakhapatnam coast is presented.  相似文献

The developmental times and the reproduction of two resistant Italian strains ofTyphlodromus pyri Scheuten andAmblyseius andersoni (Chant) were studied in the laboratory by rearing them on the spider mitesPanonychus ulmi (Koch) andEotetranychus carpini (Oud.), on the eriophyidColomerus vitis (Pgst.) and on pollen ofMesembryanthemum criniflorum. The response ofT. pyri andA. andersoni females to a spider mite supply (P. ulmi orE. carpini) of 4, 8 and 16 adult female prey per female predator per day was also studied.Development ofT. pyri onE. carpini andC. vitis required a shorter period than onM. criniflorum pollen, while intermediate values were recorded forP. ulmi. When the highest number of prey was offered, the influence of different foods on oviposition rates ofT. pyri was not significant. An increase in spider mite supply favoured a shorter pre-oviposition period and higher oviposition rates.Development ofA. andersoni was faster on pollen than on spider mites, while intermediate values were found concerningC. vitis. Differences statistically significant were recorded for development onP. ulmi andC. vitis. Colomerus vitis proved to be the more suitable food in terms of oviposition. The oviposition rate decreased when feeding uponP. ulmi, but reached intermediate values onE. carpini andM. criniflorum. Increasing spider mite densities caused shorter pre-oviposition times and higher oviposition rates. Using a given number ofE. carpini females, rather than those ofP. ulmi, resulted in higher oviposition rates and shorter pre-oviposition times. For both predators, the results suggest a higher intrinsic rate of population increase onE. carpini orC. vitis than onP. ulmi. The research was supported by a grant from Regione Veneto (Lotta biologica ed integrata nel controllo di insetti ed acari dannosi). The general lines of the research have been planned by C. Duso. The authors contributed equally to the experimental work.  相似文献

The species status ofDermacentor marginatus andDermacentor reticulatus was evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of adult ticks, cross-breeding experiments and molecular biological analysis of eggs derived from transspecific pairings. The SEM investigations including the morphometric quantification of phenotypic features, resulted in an unequivocal differentiation of adultD. marginatus andD. reticulatus ticks. The cross-breeding experiments demonstrated that irrespective of whether female ticks of both species were applied with con- or transspecific male ticks or without males to sheep, they engorged and laid eggs. The larvae, however, developed only in eggs which originated from conspecific matings. A nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) using the DNA of eggs from transspecific pairings and sequencing of the PCR products revealed two different genotypes. The genotypes of eggs originating fromD. marginatus andD. reticulatus females of these pairings differed. However, the eggs deposited byD. marginatus always possessed the same two genotypes as did the eggs produced byD. reticulatus. These results argue for a strict reproductive isolation ofD. marginatus andD. reticulatus and, therefore, for a separate species status.  相似文献

The life cycle of Glyptapanteles liparidis was 23.75 ± 1.26, 21.95 ± 2.44 and 20.83 ± 0.78 days when fed on the first, second and third instar larvae of Acronicta rumicis, respectively. Although insufficient numbers hindered statistical analysis, the life cycle of G. liparidis appeared to be shortest, 19 days, when fed on fourth instar larvae. The life cycle of G. liparidis tends to shorten as the larvae of A. rumicis fed upon are more advanced. The body length, forewing length and head capsule width of female G. liparidis fed on first instar larvae of A. rumicis were greater than those of males, while the antennae of males were longer than those of females. When fed on second instar larvae, there was no difference in body length and head capsule width between males and females, but the male antennae were longer than the female, and the female forewings were longer than the male. When fed on third instar larvae, there was no significant difference in head capsule width between the sexes, but female body length and forewing length were greater than the male, and the male antennae were longer than the female. On the whole, females were bigger than males in terms of body length and forewing length, while antennae of the males were longer than those of the females. There was no difference in head capsule width between males and females. Body length, antenna length, forewing length and head capsule width of male and female G. liparidis were relatively larger when fed on first instar larvae of A. rumicis than when fed on second and third instar larvae.  相似文献

The genusCryptococcus was found to be heterogeneous on the basis of partial rRNA sequences. The human-pathogenic speciesC. neoformans, comprising 4 serotypes and havingFilobasidiella neoformans andF. bacillispora as teleomorphs, was found at a relatively large distance fromFilobasidium. Serotypes B and C had identical sequences, while in A and D they were different, with D closer to B and C than to A.Filobasidiella depauperata, which lacks a yeast-like anamorph, clustered withF. neoformans. The genusFilobasidium was clearly separated fromFilobasidiella and clustered withC. albidus, C. kuetzingii, C. gastricus, C. lupi, C. vishniaciae, C. bhutanensis, C. aerius, C. terreus andC. ater. The latter may represent the anamorph ofFilobasidium elegans. The organe to red species ofCryptococcus, as well asC. aquaticus andC. yarrowii, were found completely unrelated with these taxa,C. macerans being affiliated toCystofilobasidium capitatum. The genusTrichosporon was found relatively homogeneous; it includesC. humicola, C. curvatus and the filamentous speciesHyalodendron lignicola. Cryptococcus flavus andC. dimennae probably belong to the Tremellales, though distances between these species are large. The positions ofC. laurentii andC. luteolus remains to be determined.  相似文献

Four species of the Drosophila virilis group, D. montana, D. littoralis, D. lummei, and D. ezoana, occur sympatrically in several locations in northern Europe. Courtship interactions between the flies of the three first-mentioned species were observed at malt baits in Kemi, northern Finland, to find out how the flies of different species recognize conspecific individuals and how interspecific courtships differ from intraspecific ones in the wild. Intraspecific courtships (including females of different reproductive stages) and interspecific courtships were also videotaped and analyzed in laboratory. In the wild the males courted both conspecific and allospecific females, even though the species varied in how much the males were attracted to females of different species. Interspecific courtships usually broke off when the male touched the female or when the male and/or the female vibrated his/her wings, producing acoustic cues. In the laboratory males courted conspecific females irrespective of the reproductive stage of the female, even though the courtships directed toward immature and fertilized females usually included only orienting and touching (no licking and singing). D. littoralis, and very rarely D. montana and D. lummei, males courted also allospecific females. In the few interspecific courtships between these three species, where the male proceeded to singing, females responded to male singing by vibrating their wings. This ended the courtship. It is suggested that both the chemical cues affecting female attractivity and the acoustic signals of males and females, which are produced by wing vibration, function in maintaining sexual isolation between these three species.  相似文献

Cylicocyclus asini n. sp. is described from the ventral colons of seven domesticated donkeys Equus asinus in South Africa. The specimens are smaller than 11 members of the genus Cylicocyclus, which currently comprises 10 recognised species, one recognised subspecies and two species inquirendae, but is similar in size to the two smaller species, C. ashworthi and C. leptostomum. Additionally, the small size of its buccal capsule places it within the so-called small buccal capsule group, namely C. ashworthi, C. leptostomum, C. nassatus, C. radiatus and C. triramosus. The shape of the oesophagus at the oesophago-intestinal junction is elongate, similar to that of C. leptostomum. The female specimens have a tail length shorter than the vulva to anus distance, similar to three of the smaller Cylicocyclus species, namely C. leptostomum, C. radiatus and C. triramosus. The new species is distinguished from the smaller members of the genus by the presence of a `club-foot' posterior in the female specimens, 40–46 elements in the external leaf-crown and a deep division of the dorsal ray which extends beyond the origin of the externodorsal ray. Similarly, the new species can be separated from the two other members in the genus with a `club-foot' posterior in the females (C. auriculatus and C. gyalocephaloides) by its body length (6.6–8.47 mm) and the presence of a nipple-like dorsal gutter.  相似文献

In Africa, the seeds and/or pods ofVigna unguiculata andVigna radiata (Papilionacea) are attacked in fields and storage structures by bruchid beetlesCallosobruchus maculatus andBruchidius atrolineatus, on which parasitoid communities can develop. One of these parasitoids is the solitary ectoparasitoidEupelmus vuilleti (Eupelmidae). The storage conditions ofV. unguiculata andV. radiata favor the overlapping of all host stages during several months. These conditions suggest that female parasitoids would vary the sex ratio of their offspring according to the different sizes or developmental stages of hosts. The sex ratio ofE. vuilleti was strongly related to the developmental stage of the hostC. maculatus. Under our experimental conditions, where superparasitism is rare, the proportion of daughters varied between 5 and 25% on the third larval stage but reached 70 to 90% on the pupae. The increase in the proportion of daughters was also observed in the absence of superparasitism. In this case, there was an absolute coincidence between the sex ratio of eggs laid and that of emerged adults. Manipulation of the sex of the egg by the females seems to take place at the time of the egg's fertilization. The relation between host weight and egg sex showed that the male eggs are preferentially laid on lighter host larvae and the female eggs on heavier ones.  相似文献

The host suitability of Agrotis segetum Denis & Schiff., A. ipsilon Hufn., Spodoptera littoralis Boisd, S. exigua Hub., Mythimna loreyi Duponchel and Mamestra oleracea L. for the gregarious braconid Cotesia ( = Apanteles) telengai Tobias was determined under laboratory conditions. The parasitoid only completed its development in larvae of A. segetum. The percentage of successfully parasitized larvae and the mean duration of C. telengai egg‐larval period were inversely related to the age of the host or host instar at parasitization. The mean number of parasitoids which emerged per parasitized larva was positively correlated with the larval age. The sex ratio was consistently high (ca. eight males to one female), independent of the host instar parasitized, as compared to 1:1 as observed frequently in field populations of this wasp. The females of C. telengai were active and produced offspring at temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30° C. However, the mean percentage of parasitized larvae increased from 13.1 to 72% and the mean progeny per parasitoid female increased from 14.7 to 129.4 parasitoids, both significant, when the experimental temperature was raised from 15 to 30°C, while their mean development time decreased from 75.5 to 19.2 days. At 25°C, the virgin and mated females continued oviposition until days 16 and 17, with a lifetime total of progeny of 397.6 (SD ±224.7) and 611.1 (SD± 128.8) parasitoids respectively, reaching a maximum of 64.3 and 99.2 on day 2 respectively.  相似文献

Between June 1986 and October 1992, in 3 periods totaling 12 months, we studied social organization of pigtailed langurs (Simias concolor)in the Pagai Islands, Indonesia. With one possible exception, all of 20 family groups contained only 1 adult male each. Nine of them contained only 1 adult female, and 11 contained ≥2 adult females. Mean group size is 4.1 individuals. Home ranges varied from 7 to 20 ha, and population density averages 21 animals/km 2 . Simias concoloris sexually dimorphic⤖n a museum sample males average 29% heavier than females, and their canine teeth are on average nearly twice the length of female canines. Combined data from several studies indicate that 60% of S. concolorgroups contain an adult pair plus young, and 40% are multifemale groupings. We sggest that any 1-male mating system that comprises a mixture of 1-female and multifemale groups in the same population should be termed monandry.  相似文献

The postcanine dentition ofCallithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix penicillata, andCallithrix kuhli was compared metrically to determine whetherC. kuhli is a hybrid population ofC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata or not. Many measurements showed significant differences (p<0.01 orp<0.05) among the three marmosets. The dental variability inC. kuhli was not greater than those inC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata. Based on canonical analysis, the three marmosets are discriminated, andC. kuhli did not occupy a middle position betweenC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata on the first two canonical axes. In the projection of the first two principal components,C. penicillata tended to be distinguished fromC. geoffroyi andC. kuhli, andC. kuhli does not exhibit intermediacy betweenC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata. The present statistical analysis failed to provide evidence thatC. kuhli constitutes a population hybridized fromC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata, although the three marmosets were discriminated from each other. This may provide support for the hypothesis thatC. kuhli is not a hybrid population ofC. geoffroyi andC. penicillata but a distinct species.  相似文献

Synopsis The status of knowledge of spawning among the five shallow waterChaetodon species in the western Atlantic is reviewed. Spawning has been observed for three species in Puerto Rico, St. Croix and the Bahamas, with possible courtship in a fourth.Chaetodon aculeatus spawned near the time of sunset over objects on the reef as single female/male pairs or as two females and one male, with pair spawning in rapid succession. Spawning occurred during much of the lunar month from February to April and it is uncertain whether any lunar periodicity to spawning exists. Male-male aggression was noted. Spawning sites (coral heads) were alternated daily and it is likely that females spawn only once every two days. A single female produced as many as 2090 eggs in a single spawning.Chaetodon capistratus spawned during much of the lunar month from February to April. It spawned about 5 min afterC. aculeatus, occasionally using the same sites, and alternated sites daily. A female produced as many as 3710 eggs in one spawning.Chaetodon striatus spawned from February to April but it is unknown if it has any lunar spawning cycle. No predation attempts by piscivores on spawning adults were seen. Predation byMelichthys niger on eggs ofC. striatus occurred. No egg predation was observed forC. aculeatus andC. capistratus. With an assumed four month reproductive season, alternate day spawning and observed egg production values,C. aculeatus andC. capistratus produce respectively about 100 000 and 200 000 eggs per large female per year. The reproductive strategy of smaller species may be to produce moderate numbers of eggs per day over a spawning season of at least a few months while larger species may produce more eggs per day for a shorter period.  相似文献

Bertiella elongata (Bourquin, 1905) andB. plastica (Sluiter, 1896) both fromCynocephalus volans (Linnaeus, 1758) andC. variegatus (Audebert, 1799) are redescribed and illustrated. A neotype forB. plastica is designated.B. boholensis Spasskii, 1951 is reduced to synonymy withB. elongata andB. cynocephali Spasskii, 1951 is synonymised withB. plastica. A new species,B. rauschi, is described fromC. volans in the Philippines. It differs from its congeners in having an accessory seminal receptacle and testes which do not extend to the aporal extremity of the medulla.Bertiella musasabi Yamaguti, 1942 is redescribed from a specimen fromPetaurista petaurista (Pallas, 1766) from Taiwan.Indotaenia indica Singh, 1962 andAprostatandrya petauristae Sawada & Kugi, 1979 become synonyms ofB. musasabi. The biogeography of the genus is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Compared with the strongly monogenic blowfliesChrysomya albiceps andC. rufifacies investigated previously, the closely related speciesC. chloropyga, C. putoria andC. varipes turned out to be amphogenic, i.e. each female of these species produces both sexes in nearly equal frequencies.C. chloropyga, C. putoria andC. varipes possess similar karyotypes consisting of five pairs of long identifiable autosomes and one pair of smaller sex chromosomes, which are homomorphic (XX) in the female and heteromorphic (XY) in the male. In all species the Y is shorter than the X. Among the cytologically known amphogenicChrysomya speciesC. varipes has the smallest heterochromosomes. Male meiosis inC. chloropyga, C. putoria andC. varipes is achiasmatic. During mitosis the autosomes show a high degree of somatic pairing but heterochromosomes, which form a heteropyknotic mass in the interphase nuclei, usually separate in the course of early mitotic prophase. A comparative study of C-banding patterns in mitotic and meiotic chromosomes ofC. chloropyga, C. putoria, C. varipes andC. rufifacies revealed that constitutive heterochromatin is present in almost all chromosomes. In the five pairs of large chromosomes it is confined to short regions adjacent to the kinetochores. An interstitial C-band has been observed only in the shorter arm of autosome no. 3 inC. putoria. With the exception of the tiny Y chromosome ofC. varipes, which seems to be completely euchromatic, all the other sex chromosomes of the amphogenicChrysomya species as well as the small chromosome no. 6 ofC. rufifacies possess longer or shorter C-segments. The karyotype ofC. varipes resembles closely that of the monogenic speciesC. albiceps andC. rufifacies thus indicating that the monogenic species could have evolved from an ancestral species closely related toC. varipes. The occurrence of two exceptional XO females and one exceptional XXY male among normal XX and XY animals in a wild stock ofC. chloropyga demonstrates that the Y chromosome of C. chloropyga and most probably of all amphogenicChrysomya species bears an epistatic male determining factor.

Feeding, reproductive and locomotor activities of fourDrosophila species were studied under short and long daylengths at 15°C. A short daylength induced firm reproductive diapause in experimental strains ofD. subauraria andD. triauraria from northern Japan, but very shallow diapause in those ofD. lutescens andD. rufa from southern Japan. A subtropical strain ofD. triauraria had no diapause. The influence of diapause on feeding activity was detected only in aged (> 12 day old) females; that is, the feeding activity was lower in diapausing females than in non-diapausing ones. Females that do not produce eggs would not require so much energy. On the other hand, young adults of the study species exhibited a high feeding activity and rapidly increased bodyweight irrespective of sex and the diapause state. They would need nutrition to build up their adult body. In males, the feeding activity decreased with age irrespective of the diapause state. Males would not require so much energy for reproductive activity. Diapausing males became heavier than non-diapausing males, perhaps because they accumulated triacylglycerols in fat bodies. However, female bodyweight did not differ by the diapause state, perhaps because diapausing females accumulated triacylglycerols and reproducing females had eggs in their ovaries. InD. triauraria, diapausing individuals exhibited somewhat lower locomotor activity than non-diapausing ones.  相似文献

Some aspects of sociosexual behavior and the age at which maturing females experienced their first evident pregnancy and at which maturing males caused their first evident pregnancy were recorded in Saguinus fuscicolliscohabiting from 6 months of age with either an adult or a maturing sex partner. The following pair combinations and trios were studied: young male -young female, young male-adult female, adult male-young female, and adult male-young male-young female. The most frequent type of social interaction between young animals was rough and tumble play, while huddling was the most frequent interaction between young animals and their adult partners. Grooming and sexual interactions were very infrequent and there were no differences in the frequencies of these interactions among subject groups. Maturing females cohabiting with an adult male conceived significantly earlier than maturing females cohabiting with a male of their own age. Maturing males cohabiting with adult females sired offspring at a significantly earlier age than males cohabiting with a female of their own age. Some possible behavioral and physiological processes involved in the causation of early reproductive success in young tamarins cohabiting with adults are discussed. To understand the roles of two well known tumour suppressor genes.l(2)gl andl(2)gd in normal imaginal disc development inDrosophila, we have initiated a study to examine effect of mulations of these genes on the expression of genes involved in the patterning of the imaginal discs. In this study we show that the expression ofwingless, theDrosophila orthologue of the mammalian oncogeneWnt, is affected in the imaginal discs ofl(2)gl 4 andl(2)gd 1 mutant individuals. In the tumourous wing imaginal discs froml(2)gl mutant larvae, the pattern ofwingless expression was progressively disrupted with an increase in the area of expression, Tumourous wing imaginal discs froml(2)gd homozygous individuals exhibited progressive broadening and extension of the wingless expressing domains. We suggest thatl(2)gl andl(2)gd might be involved in regulating post embryonic expression ofWingless.  相似文献
