Leg positions during walking on a plane and on thin rods were recorded by photography, videorecording, and videokymography. Joint angles were reconstructed from the tibia-ending position, using a 3-D model of the body. Participation of leg joints in propulsion was analysed by calculating the partial derivatives of tibia end-point position on different joint angles. Adjustment to walking with a narrow ground base is achieved by additional femur depression and flexion of the tibia in the stance phase. In the swing phase, the leg is raised by the same amount as when walking on a plane, but not to the same superior position, as on a plane. The contribution of the subcoxal joint to body propulsion is 64-94% in fore-and middle legs and 22-49% in hind legs. The oblique alignment of the coxal pivot within the thorax helps maintain a long stride for variable ground bases. In Graphosoma , it is close to the optimal position: according to several criteria, the angle between the coxal axis and the body vertical shall be arctan π/2, or ∼ 57.5°.  相似文献

  • 1 The size–grain hypothesis ( Kaspari & Weiser, 1999 ) states that (1) as organisms decrease in size, they perceive their environment as being more rugose; (2) long legs allow organisms to step over obstacles but hinder them from entering small gaps; and (3) as the size of an organism decreases, the benefits of long legs begin to be outweighed by the costs of construction. Natural selection should therefore favour proportionally longer legs in larger organisms, thereby leading to a positive allometry between leg and body length (scaling exponent b > 1).
  • 2 Here we compare the scaling exponent of leg‐to‐body length relationships among insects that walk, walk and fly, and predominantly fly. We measured the lengths of the hind tibia, hind femur, and body length of each species.
  • 3 The taxa varied considerably in the scaling exponent b. In seven out of ten groups (Formicidae, Isoptera, Carabidae, Pentatomidae, Apidae, Lepidoptera, Odonata adult), b was significantly greater than one. However, there was no gradual decrease in b from walking to walking/flying to flying insects.
  • 4 The results of the present study provide no support for the size–grain hypothesis. We propose that leg length is not only affected by the rugosity of the environment, but also by (1) functional adaptations, (2) phylogeny, (3) lifestyle, (4) the type of insect development (hemimetabolism or holometabolism), and (5) constraints of gas exchange.

Predatory invertebrates play a significant role in the organisation of aquatic communities. However, their ecology is poorly known even for many common taxa. We examined the meso-habitat use and aspects of movement activity of two common predatory water bug species Ilyocoris cimicoides (L., 1758) and Nepa cinerea L., 1758 under field and laboratory conditions in order to assess the effect of the patchiness on habitat choice. Ilyocoris cimicoides preferred open habitats, rich in submerged vegetation, without submerged terrestrial materials. Shaded habitats such as under trees, with moderately dense vegetation and submerged branches, were favoured by N. cinerea. Both laboratory and field data indicated differences in the short-term and similarity in the long-term movement behaviour of the two species. In the short-term, I. cimicoides moved frequently, while N. cinerea moved rarely, but the distance visited over the course of a longer time span is comparable.  相似文献

A new Ryocalanoid copepod, Ryocalanus spinifrons, collected by the MTD net system at a depth of 1400 m from the southwestern part of Sagami Bay, Japan, is described. The new species is morphologically very close to R. infelix Tanaka, 1956 (female unknown) from the Izu region of Sagami Bay. It is distinguished from other species by the presence of 12 long spinules on the ventral inner side of the fifth pedigerous somite, nine setae on the coxal epipodite of the maxillule and nine large robust spinules on the coxal segment of the fourth leg. The row of five robust spines on the paragnath distinguishes R. spinifrons.  相似文献

Studies of laboratory cultures of Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton from southernmost South America revealed that this species has an obligate sexual life history in which a macroscopic sporophyte alternates with a monoecious microscopic gametophyte. Sexual reproduction is isogamous and under photoperiodic control. Gametes are produced only in short days, whereas in long days, asexual zoospores are formed that recycle the gametophyte generation. Unfused gametes develop into gametophytes, and sporophytes originate only from zygotes. Unlike other sexual members of the Chordariales, gametes of C. linearis have a reduced stigma and do not show phototaxis. They are released at the beginning of the night, not in the morning. In nature, C. linearis seems to be regularly infected by a dictyosiphonalean epiphyte resembling the rare arctic species Trachynema groenlandicum (Lund) Pedersen. The epiphyte is responsible for previous contradictory results obtained in laboratory cultures of C. linearis. This is the first record of Trachynema in the southern hemisphere.  相似文献

Previous studies of leg injuries in harvestmen have focused on the fitness consequences for individuals that use autospasy (voluntary detachment of the leg) as a secondary defense mechanism. Leg damage among non‐autotomizing species of laniatorean harvestmen has not been investigated. Under laboratory conditions, we damaged femur IV of Cynorta marginalis and observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the changes in these wounds over ten days. We also used SEM to examine leg damage from individuals of three species of cosmetid harvestmen that were collected in the field. On the basis of changes in the external surface of the hemolymph coagulum, we classified these wounds as fresh (coagulum forming), recent (coagulum with smooth surface), older (coagulum is scale‐like with visible cell fragments), and fully healed (scale replaced by new cuticle growth on the terminal stump). Our observations indicate that wound healing in harvestmen occurs in a manner comparable to that of other chelicerates. Leg injuries exhibited interspecific variation with respect to the overall frequency of leg wounds and the specific legs that were most commonly damaged. In addition, we measured walking and climbing speeds of adult C . marginalis and found that individuals with fresh injuries (lab‐induced) to femur IV walked at speeds significantly slower than uninjured adults or individuals collected from the field that had fully healed wounds to a single leg. Summary During locomotion, stick insectsCarausius morosus, place the tarsus of the rear leg near the tarsus of the ipsilateral middle leg, whatever the position of the latter. This adjustment by the hind leg requires that it receive information on the actual position of the middle leg tarsus. It is shown by ablation experiments that such information is contributed by the following proprioceptors of the middle leg: the ventral and dorsal coxal hairplates, the coxal hair rows, the trochanteral hairplate and the femoral chordotonal organ. Additional information comes from other, as yet unidentified, sense organs. Several alternatives are considered to explain how the signals from the diverse sense organs of the subcoxal joint might be combined in computing the target position for the protracting hind leg. Variations of associations between different behavioural patterns were analysed during post-embryonic development in the water stick insect,Ranatra linearis L. (Heteroptera: Nepidae). Behavioural patterns recorded were: quiescence, swimming, crawling, leg waving, body swaying, respiratory ascents breathing, respiratory descents, grooming and feeding activities (predatory attempts, foreleg movements, ingestion). A factorial analysis of correspondance stressed the contrast between the organization of larval behaviour and that of adult behaviour. No behavioural patterns were dropped from the repertoire during post-embryonic development ofRanatra linearis and no new patterns developed in adults outside the reproductive period. Larval behaviour was characterized by more frequent respiratory activities and grooming and adult behaviour was characterized by more frequent locomotory activities. At all larval stages grooming was associated with respiratory activities and crawling, but not with feeding activities.  相似文献

Summary The lung mite P. africanus Fain, 1959 and its larva from a new host (Mandrillus leucophaeus) is described and compared to the most frequently found species, P. simicola Banks, 1901. The chaetotaxy of the legs is essentially identical, but leg IV of P. simicola bears 5 spines and 10 setae, while in P. africanus one of the spines is replaced by a seta. Also, very fragile small setae were discovered at the base of the ambulacra on legs II, III and IV in P. africanus and only on leg IV in P. simicola. The chaetae of the ‘Haller's organ’ on leg I are described in detail, and formulae for the chaetotaxy of all legs and measurements of both species are given. ac]19860213  相似文献

  1. Several animal species are known to distinguish between their own eggs and eggs of unrelated conspecifics. However, the cues involved in this discrimination are often unknown. These cues were studied using the predatory mite Gynaeseius liturivorus Ehara.
  2. Adult females of these predatory mites oviposit in clusters and avoid oviposition close to eggs laid by other females, resulting in reduced cannibalism between offspring. Because predatory mites are blind, it was tested whether volatiles of eggs were used as a cue for egg recognition.
  3. Adult female predatory mites were offered volatile cues of their own eggs and of unrelated conspecific eggs, and females were prevented from contacting the eggs. Predatory mites oviposited closer to their own eggs than to unrelated eggs. This preference was observed even when one own and one unrelated egg were offered as a volatile source.
  4. These results suggest that adult female predatory mites can determine kinship using volatiles released from the eggs.

The ultrastructure of the coxal glands and associated tissues in the centipedes Lithobius forficatus and Lithobius crassipes has been examined in the light of two contrasting functional hypotheses postulated by different authors. Lithobiomorph chilopods possess eight sets of pores on the posterioventral border of the coxal podomeres of leg pairs 12–15 in adult (maturus) and subadult (pseudomaturus) stadia. A modified cuticular hypodermis, known as the coxal gland, surrounds the distal portion of each blindended pore. Each gland is made up of cells which contain large numbers of hypertrophied mitochondria and a highly folded apical and basal plasma membrane. The similarity of the coxal gland to so called “transporting epithelia” is discussed and further comparisons are made between these and secretory glands in arthropods. A careful consideration of both functional hypotheses (osmoregulation or pheromone release) has revealed the possibility that the coxal gland may encompass both functions.  相似文献

Haplogloia andersonii (Farlow) Levring is an anti-tropical species that occurs on cold and warm-temperate Pacific coasts of both Americas. In its habit it resembles the subantarctic species Chordaria linearis (Hooker et Harvey) Cotton. Culture studies show that the species differ in morphology and ecophysiology of their microscopic gametophytes and in gamete behavior. Details of sporophyte anatomy are presented that also allow the distinction of field plants. In South America, H. andersonii occurs only on the Pacific coast, from central Perú (14°S) to southern Chile (50°S). Chordaria linearis occurs on the Pacific coast from Chiloé Island (43°S) to Cape Horn (56°S). In the shared area the species may co-occur. On the Atlantic coast, C. linearis was newly collected at a locality in northern Patagonia (41°S). In addition, C. linearis occurs in Antarctica. Haplogloia moniliformis Richer, recently described from Macquarie Island, is probably synonymous with Chordaria linearis.  相似文献

This study focuses on the predatory capacity of four sympatric species of web- building spiders that inhabit coffee plantations in Southern Mexico: Gasteracantha cancriformis, Cyclosa caroli, and the morphologically similar species pair Leucauge mariana and L. venusta which were considered as one species group. The retention capabilities of the webs of these species and the incidence of prey capture and consumption were measured using eight types of insect prey belonging to the orders Coleoptera (1 species), Hymenoptera (3), Diptera (2) Lepidoptera (1) and Homoptera (1). The different characteristics of each prey such as body weight, body size, defensive behaviour, etc., were recorded. The incidence of prey retention, capture and consumption were significantly higher in G. cancriformis than in any of the other species. The lowest rates of retention, capture and consumption were observed in C. caroli, while L. mariana/venusta were intermediate in their predatory capabilities. Significant negative correlations between prey size and percent consumption were detected in L. mariana/venusta and in G. cancriformis; in both cases, large prey were less likely to be immediately consumed than small prey items. The results can be interpreted in the light of the morphological characteristics of the spiders. G. cancriformis possesses long legs and a carapace and appeared to have few difficulties to manipulate all types of prey. In contrast, C. caroli showed lesser abilities to manipulate and subdue aggressive prey items, perhaps due to the short leg length and unprotected body of this species. The consumption of prey items may be related to the predatory strategy of each spider. G. cancriformis constructs a new web every morning and prey storage was never observed. The absence of prey storage behaviour could explain why this species consumes prey soon after capture. In contrast, C. caroli constructs a permanent web and stores captured prey on a stabilimentum that may explain the very low incidence of immediate consumption of prey observed in this species.  相似文献

SUMMARY In arthropods, such as Drosophila melanogaster, the leg gap genes homothorax (hth), extradenticle (exd), dachshund (dac), and Distal‐less (Dll) regionalize the legs in order to facilitate the subsequent segmentation of the legs. We have isolated homologs of all four leg gap genes from the onychophoran Euperipatoides kanangrensis and have studied their expression. We show that leg regionalization takes place in the legs of onychophorans even though they represent simple and nonsegmented appendages. This implies that leg regionalization evolved for a different function and was only later co‐opted for a role in leg segmentation. We also show that the leg gap gene patterns in onychophorans (especially of hth and exd) are similar to the patterns in crustaceans and insects, suggesting that this is the plesiomorphic state in arthropods. The reversed hth and exd patterns in chelicerates and myriapods are therefore an apomorphy for this group, the Myriochelata, lending support to the Myriochelata and Tetraconata clades in arthropod phylogeny.  相似文献

FMRFamide-related peptides of insects are particularly important because of their possible function as neurohormones and neuromodulators on a wide variety of tissues. Part of this study was an investigation of the immunofluorescent staining of motor nerves which arise in the metathoracic ganglion, examined in wholemount using an antiserum that recognizes extended -RFamide peptides (generally recognized to be of the FMRFamide family). This antiserum revealed immunochemical staining of numerous cell bodies in the metathoracic ganglion and of axons in peripheral nerve 5, a large nerve which contains both motor and sensory fibres. Axons staining positive for FMRFamide-related peptides were traced in nerve 5 as far as the femur-tibia joint, and into the first (sensory-motor) and third (motor only) ramus of nerve 5. Reverse-phase HPLC with radioimmunoassay revealed a peak of FMRFamide-related peptide activity in nerve 5 that was coincident with a peak found when thoracic ganglia were processed in the same fashion. A physiological assay was devised to test the ability of various non-native peptides to alter the characteristics of contraction of skeletal muscles of the legs.
