SUMMARY.
  • 1 Input of allochthonous material, standing stocks of benthic organic matter (BOM) and suspended paniculate organic matter (POM) were measured in a south-western Cape mountain stream from March 1986 to February 1988. The surrounding fynbos-dominated catch-ment was subjected to a prescribed burn in March 1987.
  • 2 Litter-fall in the pre-burn year exhibited a distinct seasonal pattern, with peak falls during the early summer. Although the riparian canopy was not directly affected by the fire, in that it did not burn, a heavy, aseasonal leaf-fall occurred shortly afterwards. The following summer, litter-fall was less than half that of the pre-burn summer.
  • 3 Standing stocks of BOM were significantly higher in autumn than in winter in the pre-burn year and were inversely related to discharge. Despite the heavy post-burn leaf-fall and low litter-fall during the post-burn summer, there was no significant difference between pre- and post-burn BOM standing stocks.
  • 4 Proportions and quantities of fine benthic organic matter (FBOM) in the soft BOM fraction were significantly higher in the post-burn spring, and monthly accumulation of ultra-fine benthic organic matter (UBOM) was also significantly higher in the post-burn spring and summer. These results may reflect accelerated decay rates of BOM in response to enhanced post-burn nitrate concentrations in stream water.
  • 5 Export of CPOM was low in comparison to FPOM and particularly to UPOM, and the stream appears to be highly retentive of CPOM.
  • 6 The natural resilience of the riparian vegetation minimizes the potentially disturbing effects of fire on the stream environment. As a result, the prescribed burn had a less than expected effect on both standing stocks of BOM and the stream environment in general.

Summary

The effects of a late-summer prescribed burn on the temperature and benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of a south-western Cape mountain stream were investigated over a period of 12 months. Temperature and discharge regimes appear well-defined and relatively predictable from year to year. As in other mediterranean-type ecosystems, seasonal changes in the structure of the invertebrate community and the relative abundance of different feeding groups appear to be associated primarily with changes in the physical environment. Distinctive summer and winter communities were identified, with chironomids dominating the fauna in summer and simuliids dominant in winter. Although the riparian vegetation was only slightly damaged by the fire, a heavy, aseasonal leaf-fall occurred shortly afterwards. The canopy remained sparse for approximately four months. Stream temperature in the post-burn year was not demonstrably affected by increased exposure to solar radiation, however, probably because the canopy remained open during the winter months. The fire appeared to have little effect on the invertebrate fauna. Apart from five rare elements of the biota, all species recorded in the pre-burn year were present in the post-burn year and in similar densities. It is concluded that the riparian vegetation is of major importance in maintaining the integrity of the stream environment.  相似文献

The long-term trends of mean monthly nitrate concentrations in stream and drainage runoff were evaluated in the experimental microbasin Rybárik (0.119 km2) at the Institute of Hydrology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, during the period 1987–2005. The results of analyses indicate a decreasing trend of nitrate concentration after the year 1989, but with relatively high losses in some years and relatively low losses in other years. This decreasing trend is mainly caused by a decrease in the use of nitrogen fertilizers. The nitrate concentration in surface runoff strongly correlates with runoff and fertilization. Based on measured data, an empirical relation was found describing the dependence of annual nitrate transport in the stream on annual runoff depth and on the annual amount of applied nitrogen fertilizers. In North American tidal marshes, prescribed burning has been used to manage waterfowl, furbearers, invasive plants, and fuels, but its effects on non-target species, such as marsh birds, are relatively unknown, particularly in the mid-Atlantic region. To address this informational need, we studied seaside sparrows (Ammodramus maritimus) in Dorchester County, Maryland, where prescribed marsh burning has been conducted since at least the 1930s. We compared the effects of 4 fire treatments (<1 yr since burn, 1–2 yr since burn, 3–4 yr since burn, and ≥5 yr since burn) on seaside sparrow density and reproductive output, and examined the impact of fire treatment, nest-site characteristics, and weather on nest survival from 2007 to 2009. We found that nest and territory densities were greatest on marshes <1 year post-burn, indicating that burning did not displace seaside sparrows. Nest and territory densities also declined as time since burn increased, and were about 50% less on marshes that were ≥5 years post-burn compared to marshes <1 year post-burn. Egg density (the number of eggs produced per ha) was 50% greater on marshes burned <1 year ago than on marshes burned 3–4 years ago, but we found no difference in fledgling density, indicating that predation may have disproportionately affected recently-burned marshes. Study year and percent cover of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) best explained nest survival, which was lowest in 2009, a year with high precipitation and tides. We recommend that prescribed burning continue to be used at 1–4 year intervals to maintain habitat quality for breeding seaside sparrows in the mid-Atlantic, but suggest that the effects of fire management may be less influential than predicted impacts of global climate change. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

A mass balance procedure was used to analyze rates of nitrate depletion in three adjacent reaches of West Duffin Creek, Ontario, Canada. Daily nitrate losses in individual reaches were highly variable (0.5–24 kg N) during low and moderate stream flows in May–October, 1982–1985. Nitrate removal efficiency (nitrate loss as a % of nitrate input) showed a rapid exponential decline with increased nitrate inputs to each reach. Nitrate losses and nitrate removal efficiency also had a significant negative correlation with stream discharge. The association of large nitrate loads with high stream discharge reduced the nitrate removal capacity of the stream because of shorter residence times and a higher ratio of water volume to stream bed area. Water temperature exhibited a significant positive correlation with nitrate loss which may reflect increased denitrification at higher temperatures.Variations in nitrate losses and nitrate removal efficiency between the three reaches were highly influenced by differences in water residence time. Standarized nitrate losses with respect to water residence time revealed a longitudinal decline in nitrate depletion between the reaches which was associated with a downstream decrease in stream nitrate concentration and in the organic carbon content of fine textured sediments from pool habitats.  相似文献

A severe burn leads to hypermetabolism and catabolism resulting in compromised function and structural changes of essential organs. The release of cytokines has been implicated in this hypermetabolic response. The severity of the hypermetabolic response following burn injury increases with age, as does the mortality rate. Due to the relationship between the hypermetabolic and inflammatory responses, we sought to compare the plasma cytokine profiles following a severe burn in adults and in children. We enrolled 25 adults and 24 children who survived a flame burn covering more than 20% of total body surface area (TBSA). The concentrations of 22 cytokines were measured using the Linco multiplex array system (St. Charles, MO, USA). Large perturbations in the expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were seen following thermal injury. During the first week following burn injury, IFN-gamma, IL-10, IL-17, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-8 were detected at significantly higher levels in adults compared with children, P < 0.05. Significant differences were measured during the second week post-burn for IL-1beta (higher in children) and IL-5 (higher in adults), P < 0.05. IL-18 was more abundant in children compared with adults during the third week post-burn, P < 0.05. Between post-burn d 21 and d 66, IL-1alpha was detected at higher concentrations in pediatric compared with adult patients, P < 0.05. Only GM-CSF expression was significantly different at all time points; it was detected at lower levels in pediatric patients, P < 0.05. Eotaxin, G-CSF, IL-13, IL-15, IP-10, MCP-1, and MIP-1alpha were detected at significantly different concentrations in adult compared with pediatric patients at multiple time points, P < 0.05. There were no differences in IL-12, IL-2, IL-7, or TNF levels in adult compared with pediatric burn patients at any of these time points. Following severe flame burns, the cytokine profiles in pediatric patients differ compared with those in adult patients, which may provide insight with respect to the higher morbidity rate in adults. Furthermore, the dramatic discrepancies observed in plasma cytokine detection between children and adults suggest that these two patient populations may benefit from different therapeutic interventions to achieve attenuation of the post-burn inflammatory response.  相似文献

We monitored 24 storms during the period 1998–2002 in order to elucidate whether the origin of nitrate could be inferred from water sources in the catchment. The study was performed in the Fuirosos catchment (10.5 km2) drained by an intermittent stream. Water sources were estimated through end member mixing analysis (EMMA) using chloride, sulfate and dissolved organic carbon as tracers. Three end members were identified in the catchment: event water, hillslope groundwater and riparian groundwater. Streamwater data encompassed the mixing space defined by the end members only during the 12 storms occurred during the wet period (from December to May). Water sources were related to stream nitrate concentrations during 6 of the 12 storms indicating a linkage between hydrological and nitrate sources. However, there was not a consistent pattern of a particular end member being a source of nitrate. EMMA was used to determine expected nitrate concentrations in stream water based on conservative mixing of the different water sources. The effect of the near- and in- stream zones on stream nitrate was inferred by comparing predicted nitrate concentrations to measured stream nitrate concentration. At discharges below 80 l s−1 stream nitrate concentrations were lower than expected from catchment sources in 82% of the cases suggesting nitrate retention in the near stream zones. The trend was the opposite at higher discharges.  相似文献

Immunoregulation as a consequence of thermal injury was investigated by using a murine model involving a 30% surface area full thickness burn. Both allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and in vitro anti-SRBC responses were depressed from days 3 to 25 post-burn. Suppressor T cells could be identified in both systems between days 5 and 15. On day 5 post-burn, an Ly-1+,2-, I-J+ T cell is responsible for the majority of the suppression observed. This cell behaves like a T suppressor inducer T cell in that it must interact with an Ly-2+ cyclophosphamide-sensitive cell to manifest suppression. On day 7 post-burn, only Ly-1-,2+ suppressor T cells are found which can directly suppress the activity of Ly-1+,2- helper T cells. Thus, these cells behave as T suppressor effector cells. We suggest that feedback suppression is in operation after thermal injury, with functional suppressor inducer cells appearing on day 5 post-burn, leading to the appearance of T suppressor effector cells by 7 days post-burn. Recovery from post-burn immunosuppression occurs by day 25 post-burn and is associated with the appearance of V. villosa-adherent T cells, whose activity antagonizes that of the day 7 post-burn suppressor effector. These cells may represent contrasuppressor T cells, which could play a role in the restoration of immunocompetence after burn injury.  相似文献

We examined the use of stream baseflow water quality as a representative measure of mean ground water quality in the Tomorrow-Waupaca Watershed in central Wisconsin and the relationship between agricultural land use and watershed water quality. From 1997 to 1999, 38 stream sites were sampled for nitrate during winter and summer baseflow conditions. Some sites have been sampled during winter baseflow conditions since 1994. The land area contributing ground water to each stream sampling site was delineated, resulting in 38 sub-basins. In addition, over 3500 test results from private wells in the watershed were compiled and mapped using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Nitrate concentrations in stream baseflow and well waters were found to have strong positive correlation in the sub-basins of second order or higher. This indicates that stream baseflow may be valid for monitoring mean ground water quality in watersheds predominantly fed by ground water, where much of the stream nitrate is believed to originate from ground water. Analysis of seasonal variation in the stream data showed that winter nitrate concentrations were higher than summer concentrations, implying that winter stream monitoring may be more critical for the assessment of overall ground water quality in the watershed. We also found that, as the amount of agricultural land increased in each sub-basin, average nitrate concentrations in the well and stream waters also increased, suggesting a connection between agricultural land use and nitrate contamination of water resources in the watershed.  相似文献

We quantified microscale pattern in vegetation and seed assemblages along a 24 m transect before and for two years following a controlled burn in chamise (Adenostoma fasciculatum) chaparral in central coastal California. Our objective was to document scale-dependent correlation between pre-burn seed assemblages, pre-burn canopy cover, microtopography, soil temperatures during burning, post-burn seed assemblages and post-burn vegetation. Scale-dependent correlations among pre- and post-burn seed densities, maximum soil temperatures during burning, microtopography and post-burn vegetation were measured based on two-term local covariance analysis.Seed distribution varied among species prior to fire, with seeds of some annual species concentrated in gap areas. Maximum soil temperatures during burning ranged from less than 50 °C to 225 °C, and were generally lowest in gaps in the pre-burn canopy. These gaps were associated with local topographic depressions. After burning, readily germinable seeds were concentrated in or near gaps in the pre-burn canopy. Germination of different species was variously enhanced, diminished or unchanged by the passage of fire. Post-burn vegetation was very patchy, with some areas nearly devoid of seedlings and other areas, especially pre-burn canopy gaps, supporting numerous seedlings. Seedling recruitment patterns in the second year were generally highly correlated with patterns in pre-burn seed banks and first year vegetation. Although many species exhibited similar recruitment patterns, several different mechanisms may have been responsible for the origin of those patterns.  相似文献

Contamination of surface- and groundwaters as a result of anthropogenic nitrate loading is of concern in regions subjected to intense agricultural activities. The capacity of watersheds to absorb, process or release nitrate to outflow drainage waters, however, is poorly constrained. An investigation of in-stream denitrification was conducted in a small stream draining a heavily fertilized agricultural watershed by analyzing natural isotopic abundances of nitrate-nitrogen. Using 15N isotopic signatures, we show that denitrification plays a large role in reducing nitrate levels during stream transport over a relatively short distance. We found in-situ nitrate losses of up to 50% and a corresponding shift in NO3--15N values of 10 over a 600 m distance downstream consistent with denitrification. Our results suggest that in-stream nitrate losses must be considered when examining nitrate cycling and contamination in watersheds. Not only should attempts to identify nitrate contamination sources using NO3--15N signatures be carried out with caution (as nitrate-N isotopic values can be altered during stream transport such that they no longer reflect the original nitrate source), but in-stream measures of nitrate concentrations aimed at monitoring contamination levels may underestimate nitrate inputs to surface waters due to denitrification during transport.  相似文献

The impact of residential and agricultural development on stream periphyton communities in the New Jersey Pine Barrens was examined by comparison with communities in undeveloped areas. Watershed disturbance resulted in stream water primarily characterized by greatly elevated pH levels and nitrate concentrations. A total of 53 periphyton species were encountered in bimonthly samples over a one year period in the three disturbed and three undisturbed study streams. Species richness was significantly greater in the disturbed streams based on three criteria: the average number of species per stream on each sampling occasion (disturbed = 6.3; undisturbed = 4.9), the average number of species per stream for the entire year (disturbed = 19.3; undisturbed = 16.0), and the total number of species found in streams within a type (disturbed = 40; undisturbed = 31). Species composition also changed significantly as the result of disturbance. There appeared to be replacement of species characteristic of undisturbed Pine Barrens streams with species peripheral to the region. The expected effects of both elevated pH and nitrate were consistent with these results.  相似文献

1. Assessment of the role of landscape structures such as buffers is a necessary prerequisite for the sustainable management of water resources in an agricultural setting. 2. We monitored nitrate concentrations during interstorm periods at the outlet of 16 subcatchments of different orders within a catchment of 378 km2. We characterised stream network, wetlands, agricultural practices and land cover and identified their relationships with nitrate fluxes and concentrations. 3. Two main factors controlled annual nitrate fluxes: the agricultural nitrogen surplus and the nature of the system comprising the wetland zone and adjoining watercourses. In the latter case, nitrate fluxes were reduced in proportion to the surface area of the riparian wetland and the flowpath distance of fluxes in the stream network. At the scale of the order‐6 stream, 53% of annual nitrate flux during interstorm periods was removed during transfer via the wetland and the river, corresponding to 21.1 kg N ha?1 per year. 4. The influence of the riparian wetland zone/watercourse system increased during periods of low water level, explaining up to 64% of nitrate concentration variation among locations within the river network, but only 9% during periods of high water level. 5. The buffering role was stronger at higher stream orders, and the dependence on stream order was more apparent at low water level, when we observed mean nitrate concentrations in the order‐6 stream that were 47% lower than observed in order‐2 or order‐3 streams.  相似文献

An Arizona watershed converted from chaparral to grass, released high concentrations of nitrate to stream water. The nitrate originated from the rooting zone of the decomposing shrubs. High nitrate concentrations (44–373 ppm) were found in soil solutions from 1.5-, 3.0-, and 4.6-m depths on the converted watershed as compared with low nitrate concentrations (0.2–6.2 ppm) found in an adjacent undisturbed area. Soil solution nitrate concentrations at the 0.3-m depth were generally low, especially in the untreated area. High nitrate concentrations were balanced mainly by relative decreases in bicarbonate anions in the soil solutions and in the stream water. Multiple stepwise regression analyses showed improvement in the regression of bicarbonate on nitrate when chloride and sulfate anions were entered as variables.  相似文献

A major complication associated with burn injury is delayed wound healing. While healing of the burn injury site is essential, healing of distal injury sites caused by surgical interventions and other processes also is important. The impact of burn injury on healing of these distal wound sites is not understood clearly. To study this, mice were subjected to major burn injury or a sham procedure. Immediately following, excisional wounds were made on the dorsal surface caudal to the burn site and wound closure was monitored over a 7-d period by planimetry. In a second series of experiments, plasma and excisional wounds were collected for in vitro analysis of cyto- and chemokine levels, L-arginine metabolism, and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha expression. At 1-7 d post-injury, a significant inflammatory response was evident in both groups, but the healing process was delayed in the burn-injured mice. At 3 d post-injury, wound levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and keratinocyte-derived chemokine were suppressed in the burn group. This difference in the wound inflammatory response was independent of changes in L-arginine metabolism (nitrate levels, inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, arginase activity), but correlated with a marked reduction in HIF-1alpha protein levels. In conclusion, these findings suggest that HIF-1alpha and the inflammatory response play a significant role in wound healing, and reduced levels of HIF-1alpha contribute to the impaired healing response post-burn.  相似文献

Hypermetabolism and anorexia are significant problems associated with major burn trauma. Recent studies have implicated hypothalamic peptides and receptors of the corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) family as putative mediators of burn-induced hypermetabolism. Increased neuronal activity at the CRF type 2 receptor (CRF R-2) appeared particularly involved in the expression of elevated resting energy expenditure (REE) following major burn trauma. In the present study we continued these investigations of CRF R-2 mediation of burn-induced hypermetabolism, demonstrating that 3rd ventricle injection of CRF R-2 antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) normalized REE in burned rats. Similar treatments with CRF or CRF R-1 antisense ODNs had no significant effect in burned rats. In addition, 3rd ventricle injection of the selective CRF R-2 antagonist, antisauvagine-30, also reduced REE significantly in burned rats, while similar treatment with the selective CRF R-1 antagonist, antalarmin, was without effect. To determine which endogenous peptide was altered following burn we measured hypothalamic levels of urocortin (UCN) and CRF 15 days after burn injury, finding UCN was significantly elevated by nearly 3-fold, while CRF level tended to be decreased. We also assessed hypothalamic mRNA peptide and receptor expression by real-time PCR 7, 14, and 21 days post-burn, observing decreased CRF expression 7 and 21 days post-burn, decreased UCN-2 expression 7 days post-burn, and no significant alteration in UCN-1 at any time point. However, CRF R-2 mRNA was elevated at each post-burn time point. These results continue to suggest that increased neuronal activity is integrally involved in the mediation of burn-induced hypermetabolism, and that one of the UCN peptides may be the endogenous ligand affecting this receptor.  相似文献

In a boreal forest catchment in the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario, wildfire caused an increase in the concentrations of strong acid anions and base cations of the stream. In the naturally base-poor Northwest (NW) Subbasin, a 1980 wildfire caused exports of strong acid anions to increase more than export of base cations, causing a 2.5 fold increase in the acidity of the stream. Mean annual stream pH declined from 5.15 prior to fire to 4.76 two years after fire. Acid-neutralizing capacity (ANC), calculated as the difference between total base cations and strong acid anions, decreased to 20% of pre-fire values. Sulfate and chloride were the strong acid anions responsible for the decline in ANC, increasing four-fold. While nitrate increased eleven-fold, concentrations were too low to significantly affect ANC. There was a significant correlation between weekly sulfate concentration and base cation concentration (r 2 = 0.83) in the two years after fire. Recovery of ANC was caused by the more rapid decline in concentration of sulfate than by changes in base cations. Drought produced a similar but weaker response than fire, with increased sulfate concentrations and decreased stream pH. Climatic warming that increases drought and fire frequency would have effects that mimic the impacts of acidic precipitation (i.e. higher sulfate concentrations and acidic stream waters). Areas which have higher concentrations of stored S from past acid precipitation or have large areas of peatlands in the watershed may have aggravated losses of S and H+ after drought and fire.  相似文献

Burn injury is associated with profound inflammation and activation of the innate immune system involving γδ T-cells. Similarly, Toll-like receptors (TLR) are associated with activation of the innate immune response; however, it is unclear whether TLR expression is altered in γδ T-cells after major burn injury. To study this, male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to burn injury (25% TBSA) and 1 or 7 days thereafter, blood and spleen cells were isolated and subjected to FACs analysis for TLRs and other phenotypic markers (γδ TCR, αβ TCR, CD69, CD120b). A marked increase in the number of circulating γδ T-cells was observed at 24 h post-burn (14% vs. 4%) and a higher percentage of these cells expressed TLR-2. TLR-4 expression was also increased post-burn, but to a lesser degree. These changes in TLR expression were not associated with altered CD69 or CD120b expression in γδ T-cells. The mobilization of, and increased TLR expression in, γδ T-cells was transient, as phenotypic changes were not evident at 7 days post-burn or in γδ T-cells from the circulation or spleen. The increases in TLR expression were not observed in αβ T-cells after burn injury. In conclusion, 24 h after burn injury mobilization of γδ T-cells with increased TLR expression was observed. This finding suggests that this unique T-cell population is critical in the innate immune response to injury, possibly through the recognition of danger signals by TLRs.  相似文献

The influence of riffle-pool units on hyporheic zone hydrology and nitrogen dynamics was investigated in Brougham Creek, a N-rich agricultural stream in Ontario, Canada. Subsurface hydraulic gradients, differences in background stream and groundwater concentrations of conservative ions, and the movement of a bromide tracer indicated the downwelling of stream water at the head of riffles and upwelling in riffle-pool transitions under base flow conditions. Channel water also flowed laterally into the floodplain at the upstream end of riffles and followed a subsurface concentric flow path for distances of up to 20 m before returning to the stream at the transition from riffles to pools. Differences in observed vs predicted concentrations based on background chloride patterns indicated that the hyporheic zone was a sink for nitrate and a source for ammonium. The removal of nitrate in the streambed was confirmed by the loss of nitrate in relation to co-injected bromide in areas of downwelling stream water in two riffles. Average stream water nitrate-N concentrations of 1.0 mg/L were often depleted to <0.005 mg/L near the sediment-water interface. Consequently, an extensive volume of the hyporheic zone in the streambed and floodplain had a large unused potential for nitrate removal. Conceptual models based mainly on studies of streams with low nutrient concentrations have emphasized the extent of surface-subsurface exchanges and water residence times in the hyporheic zone as important controls on stream nutrient retention. In contrast, we suggest that nitrate retention in N-rich streams is influenced more by the size of surface water storage zones which increase the residence time of channel water in contact with the major sites of rapid nitrate depletion adjacent to the sediment-water interface.  相似文献

Mechanisms underlying catchment export of nitrogen (N) during seasonal transitions (i.e., winter to spring and summer to autumn) were investigated in high-elevation catchments of the Sierra Nevada using stable isotopes of nitrate and water, intensive monitoring of stream chemistry and detailed catchment N-budgets. We had four objectives: (1) determine the relative contribution of snowpack and soil nitrate to the spring nitrate pulse, (2) look for evidence of biotic control of N losses at the catchment scale, (3) examine dissolved organic nitrogen ( DON) export patterns to gain a better understanding of the biological and hydrological controls on DON loss, and (4) examine the relationship between soil physico-chemical conditions and N export. At the Emerald Lake watershed, nitrogen budgets and isotopic analyses of the spring nitrate pulse indicate that 50 to 70% of the total nitrate exported during snowmelt (ca. April to July) is derived from catchment soils and talus; the remainder is snowpack nitrate. The spring nitrate pulse occurred several weeks after the start of snowmelt and was different from export patterns of less biologically labile compounds such as silica and DON suggesting that: (1) nitrate is produced and released from soils only after intense flushing has occurred and (2) a microbial N-sink is operating in catchment soils during the early stages of snowmelt. DON concentrations varied less than 20–30% during snowmelt, indicating that soil processes tightly controlled DON losses.  相似文献
