Background and Aims

Root system development is affected by soil conditions. The effects of bulk density, water content and penetration resistance on root development processes were investigated in peach trees.

Methods

Peach tree rootstocks were grown in various soil conditions, combining two bulk densities (1.2 and 1.5?g soil.cm-3) and three water contents (0.14, 0.17 and 0.20?g.g-1soil). Root parameters (tip diameter, length of apical unbranched zone, branching density and diameters of main and lateral roots) and plant growth (leaves, branches, trunk, root dry mass) were measured. Root growth processes (elongation, branching) were studied using relationships between root parameters.

Results

The proportion of biomass allocated to each plant compartment was similar whatever the soil conditions. Variations in root development were best explained by the variation in penetration resistance, rather than other soil properties. Increased soil penetration resistance reduced the root elongation rate, especially for thick roots. In addition, the branching pattern was affected. In soil with a high penetration resistance, the root system shape differs from a typical herringbone pattern.

Conclusions

These results allow quantification of the root system plasticity, and improve our understanding of the interactions between root development and soil properties.

Development of the root system, appearance of nodules, and relationshipsbetween these two processes were studied on pea (Pisum sativumL., cv. Solara). Plants were grown in growth cabinets for 4weeks on a nitrogen—free nutrient solution inoculatedwith Rhizobium leguminosarum. Plant stages, primary root length, distance from the primary root base to the most distal first-orderlateral root, and distance from the root base to the most distalnodule, were recorded daily. Distribution of nodules along theprimary root and distribution of laterals were recorded by samplingroot systems at two plant stages. Primary root elongation ratewas variable, and declined roughly in conjunction with the exhaustionof seed reserves. First-order laterals appeared acropetallyon the primary root. A linear relationship was found betweenthe length of the apical unbranched zone and root elongationrate, supporting the hypothesis of a constant time lag betweenthe differentiation of first-order lateral's primordia and theiremergence. Decline of the primary root elongation rate was precededby a reduction in density and length of first-order laterals.Nodules appeared not strictly but roughly acropetally on theprimary root. A linear relationship was found between the lengthof the apical zone without nodule and root elongation rate, supporting the hypothesis of a constant time lag between infectionand appearance of a visible nodule. A relationship was foundbetween the presence/absence of nodules on a root segment andthe root elongation rate between infection and appearance ofnodules on the considered root segment. Regulation of both processesby carbohydrate availability, as a causal mechanism, is proposed. Key words: Pisum sativum L, root system, nodules  相似文献

This study aimed to underpin the development of a generic predictivemodel of the regulation of shoot branching by roots in nodallyrooting perennial prostrate-stemmed species using knowledgegained from physiological studies of Trifolium repens. Experiment1 demonstrated that the net stimulatory influence from the basalrooted region of the plant on growth of newly emerging axillarybuds on the primary stem decreased as their phytomeric distancefrom the basal root system increased. Experiment 2 found thatat any one time the distribution of net root stimulus (NRS)to the apical bud on the primary stem and all lateral brancheswas fairly uniform within a single plant. Thus, although NRSavailability was uniform throughout the shoot system at anypoint in time, it progressively decreased as shoot apical budsgrew away from the basal root system. Based on these findings,a preliminary predictive model of the physiological regulationof branching pattern was developed. This model can explain thedecline in growth rate of buds on a primary stem as it growsaway from its basal root system but not the rapid progressivedecline in secondary branch development on successive lateralbranches. Thus knowledge of NRS availability to emerging budsis not, by itself, a sufficient basis from which to constructa predictive model. In addition, it seems that the ability ofan emerging bud to become activated in response to its localNRS availability is, at least in part, directly influenced bythe activation level of its parent apical bud. The experimentaltesting of this hypothesis, required for continued developmentof the model, is proceeding.

The in vitro cultures of the PR 204/84 peach rootstock (Prunus persica×P. amygdalus) produced the higher rooting percentage, mean root number, mean root length, fresh, and dry mass of roots when grown on media containing 88 mM sucrose or 88 mM glucose. Parafilm, rubber and aluminum foil as sealing materials were not significantly different in terms of rooting percentage, fresh, and dry mass of roots after 24 d in culture. The use of cotton as sealing material induced lower root number per shoot, length of roots, fresh, and dry mass of roots than the rest treatments.

Thick roots elongate faster than thinner ones. However, within one species, the growth achieved by roots of a given diameter can be very variable, and root diameter can only be considered as a determinant of root potential elongation rate. As root elongation is highly correlated to carbon availability, it can be hypothesized that local competition for resources, expressed as the number of lateral roots per unit length (i.e. the branching density), modulates root elongation. Using novel methods in field conditions, we have estimated apical diameters, elongation rates and growth durations of nearly 3500 banana lateral roots, in a field experiment with high radiations and a shaded glasshouse experiment with low radiations. Apical diameters and branching densities were lower in the experiment with low radiation, but elongation rates were higher. In both experiments, mean elongation rates of first-order laterals and thick second-order laterals were negatively correlated with bearing root branching densities. It is hypothesized that, even though apical diameters were lower, low branching densities in the shaded glasshouse allowed enhanced lateral root elongation. In both experiments, second-order laterals elongated more slowly than first-order laterals of similar diameter. A specific effect of root order, independent of branching density and apical diameter, contributed to explain these slow second-order lateral elongation rates. Most lateral roots elongated between 9 and 21 days and growth duration was mainly correlated with root diameter.

Field root investigations are often limited by the static nature of classical observations, resulting in the need to develop alternative methodologies that allow dynamic interpretation of root architecture variability on the basis of static measurements. The objectives of this work were (i) to evaluate the use of selected morphological indicators, namely root apical diameter (Da) and the length of the apical unbranched zone (LAUZ), in predicting primary and lateral root growth patterns in banana trees, (ii) to propose a field methodology for the assessment of root dynamics based on static measurements. Banana trees (Musa acuminata cv `Grande Naine') were grown in 5 rhizotrons as well as in field conditions, respectively on pouzzolane and Mollic Andosols. In rhizotrons, root growth analysis was carried out by reporting root elongation, Da and LAUZ, three times a week. In field conditions, 4 series of excavations were made at three-week intervals. Apart from root growth rate, measurements were the same as those in the rhizotrons. LAUZ was confirmed as a stable and good predictor of root growth rate for the different types of roots. In the rhizotrons, the root growth of lateral roots was found to be well correlated to the product of Da and the growth rate of the bearing root. Evaluation in field conditions from static observations attested consistent relationships between measured and predicted root length for lateral roots (slopes close to 1:1). The apical diameter can be considered as a good indicator of root growth potential, while actual lateral root growth depends on the bearing root elongation rate. Morphological static indicators calibrated from growth dynamics in rhizotrons are of major interest in explaining growth variability in field conditions. Especially the `growth rate-LAUZ' relationship can be considered a useful tool in interpreting field patterns of growing roots in relation to various soil conditions.

This work was undertaken to follow the appearance and development of symptoms of lead toxicity in growing roots of seedlings. The effects of lead nitrate (10-2–105 M) were studied on the roots of maize (Zea mays) seedlings, cvs. Diamant and Sterling. The roots were grown on filter paper either on glass in trays or in large Petri dishes. The following characteristics of root growth were studied: seed germination, length of primary and seminal roots, number of seminal and lateral roots, length of branching zone, length of meristem and fully-elongated cells and the number of fully-elongated cells along the daily length increment. 10-2 M lead nitrate exerted a clear toxic effect on root elongation just after radicle emergence; its influence on shoot growth was weak. However 10-2 M Pb solution did not affect either radicle emergence itself or seminal root emergence, which can be explained by the impermeability of seed testa to lead salt. The inhibitory effect of 10-3 M lead nitrate appeared a day later and was not as toxic: the growth of primary and seminal roots proceeded at lower rate due to a partial inhibition of cell division and cell elongation in them. 10-3 M lead nitrate modified the root system morphology: it exerted no effect on the emergence of lateral roots and their number, but induced a more compact distribution of lateral roots along a shorter branching zone due to a reduced length of mature cells in the primary root. As a result of the more prominent inhibition of primary root growth, a shorter branching zone with more compactly located lateral roots occupied a position much closer to the root tip than in roots grown without the influence of lead.

Species of the genus Veronica differ in habitat preferences, growth form and in adventitious root production. The annualspecies rarely or never produce adventitious roots in intactplants in the field but some, for example V. persica and V.arvensis will root vigorously from single node stem segmentsin culture. Others, such as V. agrestis require the presenceof IAA for substantial levels of root formation to occur incultured stem segments. Veronica hederifolia cuttings rarelyproduce roots. Stem cuttings of the perennial species, in general, rooted more vigorously than those of annual plants. Both V.fihiformis and V. serpyllifolia root very strongly. The position of root production from the stem cuttings differedfrom species to species. Roots arose either from the node, theregion of the base or at some intermediate point. Veronica arvensis,V. chamaedrys and V. persica rooted mainly from the basal regionwhereas V. filiformis rooted mainly from the node. Veronicaserpyllifolia cuttings rooted at both of these locations. Veronica filiformis, a perennial species that is infertile inBritain, produces root primordia in intact plants at nodes whichare close to the shoot apex. Thus, even very young stem segmentshave ‘preformed’ root primordia. For this reason, detached stem segments of V. filiformis root very rapidly andthis probably has been of great significance in its successfulinvasion and spread in lawns and short turf areas. The seasonal patterns in concentrations of both soluble (NSC-S)and insoluble (NSC-I) non-structural carbohydrates, in 3-year-oldpeach trees (Prunus persica L. Batsch) grown in sand cultureare described. The ability of trees to mobilize their carbohydratereserves in response to scion-trunk girdling, which preventsphotosynthate transport toward the roots, was tested at fourphenological stages. Girdling induces a NSC-I depletion in rootsand rootstock-trunk bark and a NSC-I accumulation in leavesand shoots. On the contrary, the NSC-S concentrations of theorgans located both above and below girdling were not significantlyaffected by the treatment. Consequently, when phloem transportbreaks down, trees, whatever their growing stage, mobilize carbohydratereserves below the girdle to maintain the soluble sugar contentsat the same level as in control trees. The effects of taproot blocking and pruning on the developmentof the early secondary roots (ESR) of rubber seedlings werestudied in root observation boxes under controlled conditions.During shoot flush, both the mean elongation rate and mean apicaldiameter of the ESR decreased regardless of treatments. Thereafter, the elongation rate of the ESR increased greatly when the taprootwas blocked, slightly for the control and scarcely for the prunedsystems in which fast growing regenerated roots developed. Thedifferences between treatments were related to the proportionof ESR which ceased growing. Following shoot arrest, the apicaldiameter of ESR increased greatly for blocked seedlings andto a lesser extent for pruned seedlings. Branching density ofthe ESR and elongation of tertiary roots were also higher forseedlings without a growing taproot. The dynamics of ESR response was not consistent with activeinhibition of their development by the growing taproot. Moreover, this response was dependent on concurrent development of shootand regenerating roots, hence competition processes were morelikely to be determining. In such an hypothesis, root elongationcan be limited by assimilate availability, but also by eachroot's maximum growth rate in non-limiting conditions, i.e.growth potential. Since the latter is related to apical diameter,a significant acceleration of elongation required a parallelincrease in apical diameter and this may explain the relativeinertia of ESR to taproot alteration. Conversely, regeneratingroots could have a high growth potential because they were initiatedin a favourable context, thus their development competed stronglywith elongation of ESR. Changes in the obturator of the peach (Prunus persica) havebeen investigated and related to pollen tube growth in thisregion. At anthesis, the cells of the obturator are active andrich in starch reserves. Twelve days after anthesis these cellsproduce a secretion that stains for carbohydrates and for proteins. As the secretion is produced, starch vanishes from these cellsand they degenerate and collapse as callose is accumulated.Secretion is independent of pollination as it takes place ina similar fashion both in pollinated and in unpollinated flowers. Pollen tube growth along the obturator surface depends on thissecretion for, although pollen tubes reach the base of the styleseven days after pollination, they cannot grow on the obturatoruntil five days later, when the secretion is produced. Thisdiscontinuous secretion taking place at the obturator may providea mechanism that controls the entrance of pollen tubes intothe ovary in the peach. A dynamic 3D model of root system development was adapted to young sessile oak seedlings, in order to evaluate the effects of grass competition on seedling root system development. The model is based on a root typology and the implementation of a series of developmental processes (axial and radial growth, branching, reiteration, decay and abscission). Parameters describing the different processes are estimated for each root type. Young oak seedlings were grown for 4 years in bare soil or with grass competition and were periodically excavated for root system observation and measurements (topology of the root system, length and diameter of all roots with a diameter greater than 0.3 mm). In the fourth year, 40 cm×20 cm×20 cm soil monoliths were excavated for fine root measurement (root density and root length). Root spatial development was analysed on a sub-sample of roots selected on four seedlings. The model was a guideline that provided a complete and consistent set of parameters to represent root system development. It gave a comprehensive view of the root systems and made it possible to quantify the effects of competition on the different root growth processes. The same root typology was used to describe the seedlings in bare soil and in grass. Five root types were defined, from large tap roots to fine roots. Root system size was considerably reduced by grass competition. Branching density was not affected but the branch roots were always smaller for the seedlings grown in competition. Reiteration capacity was also reduced by competition. Cross sectional areas before and after branching were linearly related with a scaling coefficient close to 1, as predicted by the pipe model theory. This relationship was not affected by grass competition.

Two manipulative experiments tested hypotheses pertaining to the correlative control exerted by nodal roots on branch development of the distal non-rooted portion of Trifolium repens growing clonally under near-optimal conditions. The two experiments, differing in their pattern of excision to manipulate the number of branches formed at the first 9-10 phytomers distal to the youngest nodal root, each found that after 20 phytomers of growth the total number of lateral branches formed on the primary stolon remained between five and seven regardless of where the branches formed along the stolon. Additional treatments established that nodal roots influenced branch development via relationships among shoot sinks for the root-supplied resources rather than through variation in the supply of such resources induced by fluctuations in photosynthate supply to roots from branches. Regression analysis of data pooled from treatments of both experiments confirmed that shoot-sink relationships for root- supplied resources controlled the branching processes on the non-rooted portion of plants. A disbudding treatment, which removed all the apical and axillary buds present on basal branches, but left other branch tissues intact, increased branch development of the apical region in the same way as did complete excision of the basal lateral branches. The apical buds and the elongation processes occurring immediately proximal to the buds were thus identified as strong sinks for the root-supplied resources. Such results suggest that branch development on the non-rooted shoot portion distal to the youngest nodal root is regulated by competition among sinks for root-derived resources, of limited availability, necessary for the processes of elongation of axillary buds and the primary stolon apical bud.

Two approaches for modelling the growth and development of cassava,Manihot esculenta Crantz, are described and evaluated. The twomodels differ only in the hypotheses accounting for storageroot growth. In model 1, assimilate allocation to storage rootsis governed by the combined Chanter's (1976: Mathematical modelsin mushroom research and production. PhD Thesis, Universityof Sussex, UK) growth equation; and in model 2 the spill-overhypothesis for assimilate allocation to storage root governsstorage root growth. In both models, canopy photosynthesis generatesthe carbon substrate required for all growth processes. Thegrowth rates of leaves, stems and storage roots are definedby growth equations subject to substrate saturation kinetics.A key feature of both models is that the growth demands of thestem, fibrous roots and storage roots are related to leaf demandrates. Allocation to stems and branches was modelled by meansof a modified logistic growth equation which includes all theparameters and variables (number of nodes, internode lengths, stem density, stem modulus of elasticity and branch tensilestrength) that define the limits of the load bearing capacityof the shoot's supportive structures. The correlation coefficientsfor determination of yield prediction for the models werer =0.898,P =0.0385 (model 1) and r =0.954, P =0.0117 (model 2). For agrowth season of 290 d (after which leaf area index equals zeroand crop growth ceases), both models simulate the sigmoidaltransition from the lag to exponential phase of crop growth. Both models are equally well corroborated by observed data;however, model 1 has greater explanatory power. Summary Root attributes of tree seedlings of seven species from the tropical deciduous forest along the Pacific Coast of Mexico are described using morphometirc root system analysis. Mean relative growth rate, root/shoot ratios, specific root length, root density, mean number of roots tips and root length/leaf area ratio were determined in seedlings grown for 35 days inside growth chambers. All the species had low relative growth rates, low root/shoot ratios and low root densities (<0.5 cm/cm3). The species associated with disturbed habitats, in contrast to the species characteristic of undisturbed areas, presented small seeds, a dichotomous root branching pattern and large specific root length. No relationship was found between seed size and mean relative growth rate among the species studied.

The meristematic activity of the apical cell and its derivatives (merophytes) in the unbranched, determinate roots of Azolla filiculoides Lam. was investigated. The plane of division of the apical cell indicates that it is the initial of each merophyte. The division plane of each newly formed merophyte is strictly periclinal to the root surface and provides confirmation that the immediate derivatives of the apical cell cannot be the ultimate root initials. The frequency of cell division as determined by the mitotic index, and by the duration of the cell cycle as determined by the colchicine method, confirmed the meristematic activity of the apical cell. As roots increase in length, the duration of the cell cycle in the total meristem increases, with the apical cell possessing the longest cell cycle, whereas the immediate derivatives maintain approximately the same cycle duration as in shorter roots. In determinate Azolla roots, cell division appears to play a major role up to a certain root length, then increase in length is produced mainly by cell elongation.
