Most socially monogamous bird species engage in extra-pair mating,and consequently males may adopt various behavioral strategiesto guard paternity. However, the relationship between mate guardingand extra-pair paternity is unclear: low levels of extra-pairpaternity can be associated either with no mate guarding orwith intense mate guarding. We investigate paternity guardsin the purple-crowned fairy-wren (Malurus coronatus), a duettingspecies where extra-pair paternity is rare. This species isunusual in a genus known for extremely high levels of extra-pairmating. We examine the behavioral interactions between the sexesunderlying these low rates of extra-pair paternity and showthat male purple-crowned fairy-wrens do not use frequent copulationor courtship feeding to assure paternity or guard females acousticallyby duetting. Males maintain close proximity to females bothwhen they are fertile and when they are not breeding and donot invest in courtship displays to extra-pair females. Consistentwith predictions of theoretical models, low extra-pair paternityin this species may be related to female fidelity rather thanmale paternity assurance strategies, but short-term removalof males would be necessary to test this experimentally.  相似文献

A territorial intruder often poses more of a threat to the territory holder of the same sex as itself. As territorial aggression is associated with costs, aggression shown by birds towards territorial intruders of the opposite sex deserves investigation. This behaviour could arise due to the reproductive value of a mate or through mutualism between members of a pair. We investigated these hypotheses by presenting mated pairs of Tawny Owls Strix aluco with playback of male calls, female calls and a male and female duetting, and recording the number and intensity of responses by the male and female territory holders. Females responded significantly more often to female than to male calls. Males responded equally often to male and female playback. Males which had previously bred successfully with their mate were significantly more likely to respond to female playback in the spring, which suggested males were responding to female playback due to the reproductive value of their mate. There was no evidence of mutualism between members of a pair.  相似文献

Studies of several bird species have shown that coloured leg bands may affect a male's success in mate attraction and/or mating competition. From a colour band experiment in the field, we have previously reported that male bluethroats, Luscinia s. svecica, with blue and orange bands (BO males) guarded their mates less intensely at the peak of female fertility, and spent more time advertising for additional mates, than males banded with non-BO colours. These responses indicated that BO males experienced less threat to their paternity than did non-BO males, possibly mediated through an increased attractiveness. Here we present paternity analyses of the broods from the field study and test whether there were differences between the two male groups in within-pair or extrapair paternity. There were no significant differences between the two groups of males in paternity, suggesting effective male protection of paternity. However, extrapair paternity was infrequent in the 2 years of the field experiment; hence, the power in detecting effects on paternity does not allow a definitive conclusion on this issue. We also conducted an aviary experiment in which females were given the choice between a BO male and a non-BO male, to test whether females had preferences for particular colour bands. Females did not associate more with BO males, as would have been expected if these males were more attractive in social mate choice. Female extra‐pair copulations (EPCs) have selected for male paternity guarding strategies in many bird species. In the bluethroat, Luscinia s. svecica, males guard their mates closely during the last 2 d before the start of egg laying, but there is great individual variation in the intensity of mate guarding. Here we show that some of this variation is related to male age. Old males guarded their mates with much lower intensity and sang more than young males, although the latter difference was not statistically significant. Controlling for male age, male and female coloration and size were not significantly related to the intensity of mate guarding. We have previously shown that young and old males had a similar paternity loss in their own broods. On the other hand, old males were far more successful than young males in achieving extra‐pair fertilizations. These patterns suggest that young and old males have different trade‐offs between preventing paternity loss in own nest and gaining paternity in others, because male skills in obtaining EPCs improve with experience and/or because of female preferences for old males as copulation partners. There were no significant relationships between paternity and male mate‐guarding behaviour during the fertile period, indicating that mate guarding is not a very effective paternity‐assurance strategy in the bluethroat.  相似文献

Duetting, found in many animal taxa, is still a poorly understood form of signalling behaviour despite numerous hypotheses to explain its function. One contentious issue is whether duetting is a cooperative endeavour or signals conflict between the sexes. We studied the function of duetting in the tropical boubou, using interactive playback experiments. We staged encounters by presenting paired birds with four variants of each of four duet types (neighbour and stranger solos and neighbour and stranger duets). Multiple lines of evidence suggest that both joint territorial defence and mutual mate guarding are important functions of duetting, and that both cooperation and conflict between males and females have shaped duetting behaviour. Of a repertoire of 12 duet types, eight were used for joint territorial defence. Two of these eight duet types were probably also used for mutual mate guarding, suggesting that individual duets can have multiple functions. We found an unusual response for duetting birds in that females often synchronized notes with male solo playback to form precise duets. In turn, males attempted to jam the song of rivals when females joined the song of male solo playback, providing further evidence for the importance of acoustic mate guarding. Song jamming by males has not previously been described for duetting species. Finally, we suggest that the repertoire of duet types is used to fine-tune territorial encounters in a network environment of multiple interactants.  相似文献

Avian duetting is a poorly understood phenomenon despite many hypotheses as to its function. Contrary to the recent view that duetting functions for mate guarding and is a result of conflict between the sexes, Australian magpie-larks, Grallina cyanoleuca, do not use duetting as a paternity guard. I used a playback experiment to investigate the role of antiphonal duetting in territorial defence and pair bond maintenance, two traditional hypotheses about the function of duetting. The experiment showed that, like many nonduetting species, magpie-larks recognize neighbours on the basis of song. It also provided evidence of functional differences between duetting and solo singing which indicate that temporal coordination of song between partners is used to maintain the territory and pair bond. Duets were more threatening territorial signals than solo songs: males initiated more vocalizations in response to playback of duets than playback of solos. Simulated intrusion also caused males and females to approach the speaker together and coordinate more of their vocalizations to form duets. Females did not engage in sex-specific territorial defence, responding equally strongly to playback of male and female song, and maintaining both territory and pair bond by attempting to exclude intruders of either sex. Males initiated more vocalizations in response to playback of male than female song, and their likelihood of duetting appeared to be related more to threats to the pair bond, in particular desertion by their partner. We studied the association between extrapair paternity (EPP) rate and male mating status in the rock sparrow, Petronia petronia, a facultative polygynous species. Overall, 32.0% (58/181) of the chicks were not sired by the social father and 57.1% (24/42) of the broods contained at least one extrapair young. Polygynous males allocated less time to guarding their mate during her fertile period than monogamous males but did not differ in the time spent guarding their nest. Polygynous males were cuckolded more frequently than monogamous males (50.5 and 6.6% of the young, respectively) and their paternity loss was positively correlated with the degree of overlap between the fertile periods of their primary and secondary females. Paternity loss did not differ between primary and secondary broods of polygynous males and acquiring a second mate was possible only at the expense of paternity in both broods. Late broods contained fewer extrapair young, despite no significant seasonal trend in the time allocated by the male to guarding his mate. Male yellow badge size was not associated with paternity. Old males were cuckolded less frequently than first-year males, but male age had a minor effect on paternity compared with male mating status. Reproductive success (number of young fledged/year) did not differ between monogamous and polygynous males once paternity was accounted for. Together, these results suggest that mate guarding can be efficient in preventing cuckoldry, and that there is a trade-off between attracting an additional mate and protecting paternity in the rock sparrow, whereas male age and phenotype were, at best, fair predictors of paternity. In multimale groups where females mate promiscuously, male–infant associations have rarely been studied. However, recent studies have shown that males selectively support their offspring during agonistic conflicts with other juveniles and that father's presence accelerates offspring maturation. Furthermore, it was shown that males invest in unrelated infants to enhance future mating success with the infant's mother. Hence, infant care might provide fitness gain for males. Here, we investigate male–infant associations in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), a primate with low paternity certainty as females mate with multiple partners and males ensure paternity less efficiently through mate‐guarding. We combined behavioural data with genetic paternity analyses of one cohort of the semi‐free‐ranging population of Cayo Santiago (Puerto Rico) and recorded affiliative and aggressive interactions between focal subjects and adult males from birth to sexual maturation (0–4 years) of focal subjects. Our results revealed that 9.6% of all interactions of focal subjects involved an adult male and 94% of all male–infant interactions were affiliative, indicating the rareness of male–infant aggression. Second and most interestingly, sires were more likely to affiliate with their offspring than nonsires with unrelated infants. This preference was independent of mother's proximity and emphasized during early infancy. Male–infant affiliation rose with infant age and was pronounced between adult males and male rather than female focal subjects. Overall, our results suggest that male–infant affiliation is also an important component in structuring primate societies and affiliation directed towards own offspring presumably represent low‐cost paternal care.  相似文献

Male mate guarding by close following has been reported in many socially monogamous bird species and is generally believed to function as a paternity guard. Many aspects of the dynamics and effectiveness of this behavior are still however poorly understood. Here, we describe the temporal variation in mate guarding behavior in male reed buntings (Emberiza schoeniclus) with a particular focus on how males allocate their mating effort between mate guarding and extrapair mating in a context of intense sperm competition. In our highly synchronous study population most males have to balance the simultaneous and mutually exclusive demands of mate guarding and seeking extrapair copulations (EPCs). We found that males frequently switched between guarding their mates and performing intrusions to neighboring territories. Both activities seemed to have significant fitness payoffs, as male mate guarding effort had a positive effect on paternity, and a large fraction of extrapair fertilizations occurred during the days when the sire guarded its own female. The reed bunting is thus an example of how discontinuous or part‐time mate guarding can still be effective in securing paternity. Female reed buntings were not particularly active in initiating EPCs as they never were observed performing extraterritorial forays. We argue that the absence of female‐initiated EPCs is a prerequisite for males to trade mate guarding against seeking EPCs. Otherwise, if females circumvent male mate guarding by timing their EPCs to periods of male absence, males should guard their mates almost continuously or rely on alternative paternity guards.  相似文献

To investigate the relative importance of paternity defences in the European robin we used behavioural observations, simulated intrusions and temporary male removal experiments. Given that paired males did not increase their mate attendance, copulation rate or territory size during the female's fertile period, the most frequently quoted paternity assurance strategies in birds were absent. However, males with fertile females sang and patrolled their territories more regularly, suggesting that territorial motivation and vigilance were elevated when the risk of cuckoldry was greatest. In addition, there was a significant effect of breeding period on response to simulated intrusions: residents approached and attacked freeze-dried mounts more readily in the fertile period. During 90-min removals of the pair male in the fertile period, neighbours trespassed more frequently relative to prefertile and fertile period controls and appeared to seek copulations with unattended females. When replaced on their territories, males immediately increased both song rate and patrolling rate in comparison with controls. We propose that male robins sing to signal their presence, and increase their territorial vigilance and aggression in the fertile period to protect paternity. In many socially monogamous species, both sexes seek copulation outside the pair bond in order to increase their reproductive success. In response, males adopt counter-strategies to combat the risk of losing paternity. However, no study so far has tried to experimentally prove the function of behaviour for paternity assurance. Introducing a potential extra-pair partner during the female fertile period provides a standardised method to examine how pair members respond immediately (e.g. increase mate guarding or copulation frequency) or long term (e.g. later parental investment and paternity uncertainty). In this study on a socially monogamous passerine species, we experimentally confronted pairs of reed warblers with a conspecific male (caged male simulating an intruder) during egg-laying. Our results revealed that occurrence of an intruder during that period triggered aggression against the intruder, depending on the presence of the female. The male territory owner also attacked the female partner to drive her away from the intruder. Thus territory defence in reed warblers also serves to protect paternity. The increase in paternity uncertainty did not affect later paternal investment. Paternal investment was also independent of the actual paternity losses. In females, the experiment elicited both, immediate and long-term responses. E.g. female copulation solicitations during the intruder experiment were only observed for females which later turned out to have extra-pair chicks in their nest. In relation to long term response females faced with an intruder invested later less in offspring feeding, and had less extra-pair chicks in their nests. Extra-pair paternity also seems to be affected by female quality (body size). In conclusion female reed warblers seem to seek extra-pair fertilizations but we could demonstrate that males adopt paternity assurance tactics which seems to efficiently help them to reduce paternity uncertainty.  相似文献

Paired male and female eastern whipbirds, Psophodes olivaceus,sing precisely coordinated, male-led duets. Four broad explanationshave been proposed for the function of duets: 1) cooperativeresource defense, 2) prevention of partner usurpation, 3) defenseof an individual's own position within the partnership, or 4)mate identification and localization. These 4 hypotheses makedifferent predictions about how male and female residents shouldrespond to simulated intrusion by other pairs or individuals.We compared the behavioral and vocal responses of 20 pairs ofeastern whipbirds to simulated territorial intrusions by: 1)a solitary singing male, 2) a solitary singing female, and 3)a duetting pair. Males and females did not coordinate theirapproach to the playback speaker and showed sex-specific responsesto playback. Males did not respond differently to duetting versussolo singing intruders. By contrast, females approached moreclosely during solo female song than during solo male song orduet playback. Females also produced specific vocalizationsonly in response to duet and solo female playback. Both sexesapproached the speaker more closely and quickly during playbackof same-sex solo songs than opposite-sex solo songs. Finally,females answered more of their mate's songs during simulatedintrusion by a lone female than during simulated intrusion bya lone male. Our results suggest that duets in this speciesprimarily function to allow females to defend their exclusiveposition in a partnership. Mate defense by females is unusualin birds but may be promoted in eastern whipbirds by a female-biasedsex ratio and the need for exclusive access to male care. Thus,duets result from independent and conflicting strategies ofmate and territory defense in males and females.  相似文献

In multiple animal taxa, including many birds and primates, members of mated pairs produce coordinated acoustic displays known as duets. By observing the behaviour of territorial animals as they respond to playback‐simulated duets of rivals, we can gain insight into the behavioural significance of vocal duets. Playback experiments, however, have been conducted across a very narrow range of duetting animals. Furthermore, many studies have been conducted with single‐speaker playback, whereas stereo‐speaker playback offers more spatially realistic simulation of duets. Moreover, by evaluating the reactions of animals to separate loudspeakers broadcasting male and female duet contributions, we can study the interactions of both males and females with same‐sex vs. opposite‐sex rivals. We used a paired experimental design to broadcast duet stimuli through a single‐speaker and a stereo‐speaker apparatus to 30 pairs of duetting barred antshrikes Thamnophilus doliatus in Costa Rica. Our goals were (1) to evaluate whether territorial antbirds respond more aggressively to male vs. female duet components and (2) to assess aggressive responses of antbirds towards single‐speaker vs. stereo‐speaker playback. Neither males nor females differentiated between the loudspeaker simulating the male vs. female duet contribution during stereo‐speaker playback trials. Barred antshrikes displayed significantly stronger responses to stereo‐speaker playback compared with single‐speaker playback. Males displayed stronger playback responses than females with closer, quicker and more vocal responses. These results provide evidence for a joint resource defence function of antbird duets given that pairs responded together with equivalent intensity to male and female simulated intruders. This is the first study to show that although duetting is an aggressive territorial signal, birds do not necessarily respond to sex‐specific components of duets. Our results support the idea that spatially realistic stereo presentation of duet stimuli is critical for experimental duet research.  相似文献

Monogamous primates maintain exclusive use of their ranges by regularly defining and reinforcing the conventional location of boundaries.Callicebus moloch males often call alone during the first morning bout, when groups are near boundaries but usually separated by more than 100m. Depending on the location and proximity of neighboring animals, groups might begin duetting and approaching one another. Duetting requires close vocal and spatial coordination of the mated pair, and stimulates the approach of neighboring pairs. At the boundary, vocalizations which keep the pair together and those associated with withdrawal from the boundary increase in proportion. To determine the effect of different calls, I played back recordings of six different vocalizations during two playback experiments, holding location and proximity constant. The responses supported hypotheses generated in the normalistic study, and suggested that at the boundary aggression is primarily intrasexual. Vocalizations and their effects in specified contexts constitute the mechanisms regulating spacing. The resulting spacing patterns maintain resource availability and exclusive access to a mate.  相似文献

Although females are the choosier sex in most species, male mate choice is expected to occur under certain conditions. Theoretically, males should prefer larger females as mates in species where female fecundity increases with body size. However, any fecundity‐related benefits accruing to a male that has mated with a large female may be offset by an associated fitness cost of shared paternity if large females are more likely to be multiply mated than smaller females in nature. We tested the above hypothesis and assumption using the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) by behaviourally testing for male mate choice in the laboratory and by ascertaining (with the use of microsatellite DNA genotyping) patterns of male paternity in wild‐caught females. We observed significant positive relationships between female body length and fecundity (brood size) and between body length and level of multiple paternity in the broods of females collected in the Quaré River, Trinidad. In laboratory tests, a preference for the larger of two simultaneously‐presented virgin females was clearly expressed only when males were exposed to the full range of natural stimuli from the females, but not when they were limited to visual stimuli alone. However, as suggested by our multiple paternity data, males that choose to mate with large females may incur a larger potential cost of sperm competition and shared paternity compared with males that mate with smaller females on average. Our results thus suggest that male guppies originating from the Quaré River possess mating preferences for relatively large females, but that such preferences are expressed only when males can accurately assess the mating status of encountered females that differ in body size.  相似文献

Female singing and coordinated male–female duetting are often but not always found in the same species. Both behaviors are more common in tropical than temperate songbirds, but few studies have differentiated between the factors selecting for each. Here we investigate the evolution of female vocal complexity and male–female vocal coordination in Carolina wrens (Thryothorus ludovicianus), one of the few non-tropical members of a songbird family (Troglodytidae) that is well known for producing coordinated male–female duets. Female Carolina wrens are not known to sing; rather, they produce relatively simple, sex-specific chatters, often during territorial encounters. We analyzed field recordings to show that females coordinate these chatters with male songs at rates similar to those observed in some tropical duetting wren species. We then used phylogenetic comparative methods to show that the evolutionary ancestors of Carolina wrens had female songs that were more acoustically complex than the vocalizations of current females, suggesting past selection against female vocal complexity. Levels of vocal coordination with males, in contrast, have changed relatively little from those of tropical ancestors. Our results suggest that these two aspects of female behavior, acoustic complexity and vocal coordination with males, have evolved independently and have different functions in communication.  相似文献

In socially monogamous species, females may engage in extra-pair fertilizations to gain direct or indirect benefits not provided by the social mate, with the potential risk of a reduction in the social mate’s paternal effort. I present an ESS model of cuckoldry frequencies, which considers both facultative and nonfacultative male responses to losses in paternity. Two possible equilibria exist: stable social monogamy with varying degrees of extra-pair paternity, and polygamy with little or no male care. Monogamy with limited cuckoldry can be stable only if the initial cuckoldry frequency is low, intrinsic cuckoldry benefits are not high, males can reasonably accurately detect cuckoldry, and female compensation for losses in male care is incomplete. Deviations from these assumptions lead to stronger mate acquisition in males at the expense of paternal care, and eventually to runaway evolution towards polygamy. Average female fitness is reduced in the runaway, although it is initiated by females maximizing the survival of offspring – a potential “tragedy of the commons” in breeding systems.  相似文献

Scramble competition polygyny is expected when females and/or resources are widely dispersed and not easily monopolized by males, or when there is an abundance of mates during an extremely restricted reproductive period. Additional factors such as first male sperm precedence or low female re-mating rate might further explain the propensity of males to engage in scramble competition. The sexually cannibalistic praying mantid Pseudomantis albofimbriata exhibits a polygynous mating system, where females exist in low-density populations and male competition manifests as the race to find females rather than as direct physical fighting. Here, we aim to determine whether there is a paternity advantage for the first-male to mate and/or a low frequency of female re-mating. First, we determined sperm precedence patterns in P. albofimbriata using the sterile male technique. Second, we tested the likelihood of female re-mating in P. albofimbriata by comparing the close-range approach behaviour and frequency of successful mating attempts for males when paired with virgin as opposed to recently mated females, and by comparing the frequency of long-distance male attraction between virgin and mated females. We found no paternity advantage for the first male to mate, rather a second male advantage. Although mated females were not rejected by males when approached from close-range, they were chemically unattractive to males searching from a distance. Since initial mate attraction in many praying mantids, including P. albofimbriata, is mediated via long-distance chemical communication, we believe the latter result is more ecologically relevant and therefore more important. These results suggest that the relatively low frequency of female re-mating observed in P. albofimbriata may be an additional factor driving scramble competition in this system.  相似文献

Sexual communication often involves signal exchanges between the sexes, or duetting, in which mate choice is expressed through response signals. With both sexes acting as signalers and receivers, variation in the signals of males and females may be important for mate choice, reproductive isolation, and divergence. In the Enchenopa binotata species complex – a case study of sympatric speciation in which vibrational duetting may have an important role – male signals are species‐specific, females choose among males on the basis of signal traits that reflect species and individual differences, and female preferences have exerted divergent selection on male signals. Here, we describe variation in female signals in the E. binotata species complex. We report substantial species differences in the spectral and temporal features of female signals, and in their timing relative to male signals. These differences were similar in range to differences in male signals in the E. binotata complex. We consider processes that might contribute to divergence in female signals, and suggest that signal evolution in the E. binotata complex may be influenced by mate choice in both sexes.  相似文献

Sonagrams of duets and solo song of the Aldabra White-throated Rail are presented and their behavioural contexts and functions noted. Visual inspection of sonagrams suggests that the structure of elements of high intensity song is individually characteristic. Elements of low intensity song are characteristic for some but not all individuals. The elements of medium intensity song are the most variable within individuals, and it is least likely that these could permit individual recognition. However, it is noted that the temporal pattern of delivery of song elements may provide cues for vocal recognition.
Both male and female Aldabra Rails respond to the playback of their mate's song by either approaching the sound source or vocalizing. A greater number of positive responses was given to playbacks of the mate's song than to playbacks of a song of a strange bird of the same sex as the mate. It is suggested that this difference in responsiveness may in part result from a more rapid habituation to unfamiliar song.
The function of duetting in the Aldabra Rail and other tropical rails is discussed. It is considered that the major function of duetting in the Aldabra Rail may be co-operative territorial defence. The extent and precision of duetting in the Rallidae is considered. It is concluded that precise duetting has not yet been demonstrated in any rail species and that the rates of calling in duets may be internally derived.  相似文献
