When the snail Biomphalaria glabrata is doubly infected by two species of trematode, Schistosoma mansoni and Ribeiroia marini, each species keeps its own cercarial shedding pattern. Emergence of S. mansoni cercariae occurs during the photophase while the R. marini cercariae are shed during the night. These results demonstrate the absence of interference between the mechanisms responsible for the cercarial shedding of each species. The only difference noted concerns a two-hour shift in the peak emergence of S. mansoni as a consequence of the antagonism between the two parasites.  相似文献

An experimental study of the cercarial emergence rhythm was conducted to compare 2 geographical strains of Schistosoma intercalatum from Cameroon and Za?re. For the Cameroon strain, the peak emergence time was between 1300 hr and 1400 hr, and the mean emergence time was 1359 hr. For the Za?re strain, the peak emergence time was between 1200 hr and 1300 hr, and the mean emergence time was 1213 hr. These results were shown to be significantly different by statistical analysis. Thus, the chronobiology of the emergence rhythms of the cercariae seems to be an additional marker to estimate the genetic variability of this species and to characterize the 2 strains.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the cercarial shedding of 2 Schistosoma mansoni populations originating from the same endemic area (Guadeloupe) allows us to distinguish an early (peak emergence at 1100 hr) and a late (peak at 1600 hr) shedding patterns of cercariae. This intraspecific variation in the chronobiology of S. mansoni cercariae may be related to the ecology in the transmission site. The early shedding pattern characterizes schistosome populations originated from urbanized foci where man plays the main role in the parasite transmission; the late shedding pattern characterizes schistosome populations originated from sylvatic focus where a rat (R. rattus) is the main host. The late shedding of cercariae is considered as an adaptation favoring transmission to a murine host whose behavior is preferentially crepuscular.  相似文献

This paper discusses observations on the emergence of Schistosoma mansoni from the snail Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to manganese sulfate. Such treatment, when snails were exposed to a short pulse of light, terminated cercarial emergence. However, with 6 hr of light, a relatively large number of cercariae emerged, indicating that a long photoperiod can override manganese inhibition. Manganese also inhibited emergence of cercariae from the sporocyst and retarded maturation of developing cercariae. Coincidental observations indicated that manganese exerts a prolonged anesthetic and relaxing action on the snail.  相似文献

The infection dynamics of Centrocestus armatus cercariae with respect to second intermediate fish hosts were investigated using cercariae collected from naturally infected Semisulcospira libertina. Cercariae survival and infectivity were recorded at 2-hr intervals. Survival remained constant but decreased abruptly at 30 hr of age. An age-dependent model presented the best-fit curve for the survival data (r2 0.936), implying that cercariae tended to allocate resources equally among themselves and then died once those resources were depleted. Cercariae infectivity remained constant over the first 10 hr of life and then declined; an age-dependent model also provided a better fit (r2 = 0.956). The transmission rate of C. armatus cercariae to the fish host was relatively low near the time of emergence from the snail host but peaked at 85% after 1 hr and then maintained a plateau period until 5 hr of exposure to fish. The pattern of transmission was also investigated initially at varying densities of cercariae and then by maintaining a constant cercariae density but varying the total number. Results revealed that the pattern of transmission was frequency-dependent.  相似文献

During a 27-hr period of food deprivation, Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Schistosoma mansoni had lower heartbeat rates and locomotor activities than did controls that were feeding ad lib. However, there was no difference between the cercarial emergence from control and experimental snails either before, during, or after the period of food deprivation. No correlation was found between the locomotor activity of the snail and the number of cercariae emerging from the snail in continuous light. Our results indicated that the emergence of S. mansoni cercariae from B. glabrata was not affected by the heartbeat rate or locomotor activity of the snail. The factors controlling the rhythm of S. mansoni cercarial emergence from B. glabrata may be independent of the snail.  相似文献

Biomphalaria glabrata and Bulinus globosus were infected with Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium, respectively, and the effect of different illumination conditions at 25 C on cercarial output was observed for 4 days. In both species, a dark period of 10–14 hr on Day 2 of the observation period resulted in an emergence pattern on Day 3 similar to the regular pattern recorded for Day 1. Total cercarial output on Day 3 was within 30% of the control (Day 1) output. A dark period of between 0 and 8 hr resulted in suppression of cercarial emergence and in abolishment of the regular hourly emergence pattern on Day 3. A dark period of 16–20 hr resulted in an emergence pattern with two peaks, the first occurred at Hour 1, and the other at Hour 5 of the subsequent light period. Interjection of a 1-hr dark period during the light period of Day 3, following short (2–8 hr) exposure to dark on the preceding day, produced an increase in cercarial shedding of S. mansoni immediately after restitution of the light conditions. On the other hand, in S. haematobium, cercarial output was stimulated during the interposed dark period itself.  相似文献

A delayed pattern of Schistosoma mansoni cercarial emergence from Biomphalaria glabrata is presented, in which cercariae did not emerge from the snail under a diurnal photoperiod until after 12 noon. Even with a reversed (nocturnal) photoperiod, delayed cercarial emergence still persisted.  相似文献

Time-until-death studies were run on cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni in 15 concentrations of zinc (from zinc sulfate) ranging from 57.6 ppm to 1 ppb. A chemically defined water medium was used for the dilution and control medium, and a partially enclosed slide chamber was perfected for the detailed observation of test cercariae. In concentrations of less than 57.6 ppm, zinc was found to have little lethal effect on cercariae during that period in which these larvae were most likely to be infective (0–6 hours) after emergence. Zinc concentration of 1 ppb killed all test cercariae within 46 hours at 21–22°C.At the highest concentration tested, 57.6 ppm zinc immobilized all test organisms within 6 hours at 21–2°C. The average time for 100 percent mortality for the control was 49 hours. The cercaricidal effects of zinc were shown to be insignificant in concentrations that would not be detrimental to other aquatic organisms.  相似文献

Hybridization and introgression can have important consequences for the evolution, ecology and epidemiology of pathogenic organisms. We examined the dynamics of hybridization between a trematode parasite of humans, Schistosoma mansoni, and its sister species, S. rodhaini, a rodent parasite, in a natural hybrid zone in western Kenya. Using microsatellite markers, rDNA and mtDNA, we showed that hybrids between the two species occur in nature, are fertile and produce viable offspring through backcrosses with S. mansoni. Averaged across collection sites, individuals of hybrid ancestry comprised 7.2% of all schistosomes collected, which is a large proportion given that one of the parental species, S. rodhaini, comprised only 9.1% of the specimens. No F1 individuals were collected and all hybrids represented backcrosses with S. mansoni that were of the first or successive generations. The direction of introgression appears highly asymmetric, causing unidirectional gene flow from the rodent parasite, S. rodhaini, to the human parasite, S. mansoni. Hybrid occurrence was seasonal and most hybrids were collected during the month of September over a 2-year period, a time when S. rodhaini was also abundant. We also examined the sex ratios and phenotypic differences between the hybrids and parental species, including the number of infective stages produced in the snail host and the time of day the infective stages emerge. No statistical differences were found in any of these characteristics, and most of the hybrids showed an emergence pattern similar to that of S. mansoni. One individual, however, showed a bimodal emergence pattern that was characteristic of both parental species. In conclusion, these species maintain their identity despite hybridization, although introgression may cause important alterations of the biology and epidemiology of schistosomiasis in this region.  相似文献

A comparative experimental study of the rhythmic shedding of three geographic strains of Schistosoma bovis cercariae (Sardinian, Sudanese and Spanish) by Bulinus truncatus showed a significant difference in the emergence patterns. The results support the existence of a genetic variability of the emergence rhythms. The origin of the variability is discussed and could be found in the pastoral practice and the ecological characteristics of the different transmission foci.  相似文献

The effects of exogenous glucose in artificial spring water (ASW) were studied on the survival and infectivity of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae. The mean percent survival of cercariae maintained in 1% glucose in ASW for 36 and 48 hr was significantly greater than that of cercariae maintained identically in ASW. Cercariae maintained in ASW with or without glucose for 24 hr, fixed in neutral buffered formalin, and stained in Oil Red O, showed an accumulation of neutral lipid in the tail. Cercariae maintained as described above and stained in periodic acid-Schiff exhibited depleted glycogen, mainly from the tail. Cercariae maintained in ASW with glucose for 24 hr did not resynthesize glycogen. Cercariae maintained in ASW with glucose for 24 hr were as capable of infecting male FVBN202 mice as were freshly emerged cercariae, and increased the percent of worm recovery. Exogeneous glucose added to ASW prolonged the survival of S. mansoni cercariae and increased infectivity in terms of worm recovery.  相似文献

Gross and histologic studies were done on laboratory-raised Physa heterostropha, Helisoma trivolvis, and Biomphalaria glabrata snails exposed individually to 100 cercariae of Echinostoma revolutum. Cercariae showed a predisposition for the kidneys of snails. They entered the nephridiopore, migrated up the tubular kidney, and encysted in the saccular kidney within 2 hr. Considerably more cysts were in the kidney of B. glabrata at 24 hr than in H. trivolvis or P. heterostropha kidneys. Encysted metacercariae were not infective to domestic chicks at 2 hr, but were infective by 4 hr. Biomphalaria glabrata exposed to about 1,000 cercariae/snail and necropsied either 10 or 16 wk postexposure contained 300-500 cysts/kidney; about one-half the cysts were viable and infective to chicks. Biomphalaria glabrata is an excellent second intermediate host for the laboratory propagation of E. revolutum.  相似文献

Because of their role in causing schistosomiasis, flukes of the genus Schistosoma are the best known of all digeneans. The genus has traditionally been divided into four familiar species groups. Here we report on three poorly known species of Schistosoma, one of which, Schistosoma hippopotami, is known from the hippopotamus, one of which is provisionally identified as Schistosoma edwardiense, another hippo parasite, and a third that has not previously been described. All were collected from freshwater snails obtained from Lake Edward, western Uganda, the type locality for both known hippo schistosomes. The three different kinds of schistosome cercariae differ from one another in size, and all are readily differentiated by their long tail stems from the cercariae of human-infecting species. Furthermore, each was recovered from a different genus of snail host, Biomphalaria sudanica, Bulinus truncatus or Ceratophallus natalensis. Molecular analysis, based on 8350 bases of combined nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, groups these three long tail-stem cercariae into a well supported clade that does not associate with any of the recognised species groups. The placement of this clade, basal to all African species plus several Asian species, suggests that there has been an ancient association between Schistosoma and hippos. This new African Schistosoma clade advocates the need for further modification of the traditional species group-based classification. Two of the four species groups are paraphyletic. It also suggests that Schistosoma has been remarkably plastic with respect to adapting to snail hosts-three distantly related genera of planorbid snails have been exploited by worms within a single clade. Finally, it adds a new layer of complexity to deciphering the origins of Schistosoma, often considered to be African but recently challenged as being Asian. In the late Cenozoic the distribution of hippo species straddled both Africa and Asia and they may have provided a means for the introduction of blood flukes to Africa.  相似文献

Susceptibility experiments were carried out with a Biomphalaria straminea-like planorbid snail (Biomphalaria aff. straminea, species inquirenda) from Espinillar, near Salto (Uruguay), in the area of the Salto Grande reservoir, exposed individually to 5 miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (SJ2 and BH2 strains). Of 130 snails exposed to the SJ2 strain, originally infective to Biomphalaria tenagophila, 30 became infected (23%). The prepatent (precercarial) period ranged from 35 to 65 days. The cercarial output was irregular, following no definite pattern, varying from 138 to 76,075 per snail (daily average 4.3 to 447.5) and ending up with death. Three specimens that died, without having shed cercariae, on days 69 (2) and 80 after exposure to miracidia, had developing secondary sporocysts in their tissues, justifying the prospect of a longer precercarial period in these cases. In a control group of 120 B. tenagophila, exposed to the SJ2 strain, 40 became infected, showing an infection rate (33.3%) not significantly different from that of the Espinillar snail (chi 2 = 3.26). No cercariae were produced by any of the Espinillar snails exposed to miracidia of the BH2 strain, originally infective to Biomphalaria glabrata. Four specimens showed each a primary sporocyst in one tentacle, which disappeared between 15 and 25 days post-exposure, and two others died with immature, very slender sporocysts in their tissues on days 36 and 54. In a control group of 100 B. glabrata exposed to BH2 miracidia, 94 shed cercariae (94%) and 6 remained negative. Calculation of Frandsen's (1979a, b) TCP/100 index shows that "Espinillar Biomphalaria-SJ2 S. mansoni" is a vector-parasite "compatible" combination.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The emergence of Austrobilharzia terrigalensis cercariae from the snail Velacumantus australis decreased with decreasing salinity and temperature. This was most marked between 23 and 25 and between 24 and 19°C. Very few cercariae were shed below 23 regardless of temperature. The decrease in cercarial emergence was associated with the decreasing metabolic activity of the intermediate host. The emergence pattern of A. terrigalensis cercariae from V. australis was diurnal. There was a major peak between 08h00 and 10h00 and a minor second one between 16h00 and 18h00. No cercariae were shed between 22h00 and 04h00. Cercariae survived in sea water (35) for up to 48h, with a half-life of 30h. There was evidence that the prevalence of A. terrigalensis infection in the intermediate host population in the Swan estuary was higher during the summer than during the winter. The production of cercariae in the sporocyst also appeared to be a seasonal phenomenon. Mature cercariae were rare in sporocysts examined during the winter months (May–October) and absent altogether from those examined in September.  相似文献

Donnelly F. A., Appleton C. C. and Schutte C. H. J. 1984. The influence of salinity on the cercariae of three species of Schistosoma. International Journal for Parasitology14: 13–21. The effect of salinity on the longevity and infectivity of cercariae of Schistosoma mattheei, Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni was determined. No significant differences in cercarial longevity occurred (p > 0.05) in low salinities (0–5.25%), whereas further increases in salinity resulted in progressive decreases in survival. In salinities ? 17.5%, cercariae were incapable of surviving for longer than 11 min. A maximum life-span of up to 122 h was recorded for some S. mattheei cercariae. Cercarial infectivity, as indicated by worm returns, was reduced progressively with increasing salinity up to a lethal limit of 10.5%. Differences in the salinity tolerance of the cercariae of the three species were discussed.  相似文献

In vivo and in vitro encystment of the cercariae of Echinochasmus liliputanus and biological activity of the metacercariae were studied. In vivo encystment of cercariae occurred in the gills of goldfish, the second intermediate host. However, the cercariae also encysted in vitro in Locke solution (0.6x to 1.2x strength), 0.7-1.2% NaCI, artificial gastric juice, and human gastric juice. Locke or NaCI solutions were shown to be appropriate for in vitro encystment to occur within 24 hr; however, full-strength Locke solution was shown to be optimal. The 1-day-old metacercariae formed in vivo and treated in 0.1% sodium deoxycholate excystation medium at 37 C for 1 hr showed 88.5% excystation. The metacercariae formed in vitro, however, showed 88.6% and 85.0% excystation for normal and abnormal ones, respectively. Abnormal cysts at room temperature usually die within 10 days. About 70% of the normal cysts, both in vivo and in vitro, can still excyst after being stored in Locke 0.5x solution at 4 C for 3 mo. Cysts formed in vivo and in vitro were equally infective. The encystment of the cercariae in vitro could be inhibited when the cercariae were treated with 1 micromol silver nitrate. Because silver nitrate binds to the papillae, especially to the ciliated papillae, on the cercaria surface, it is suggested that papillary chemoreceptors may be involved in encystment of the cercariae. The finding of E. liliputanus cercariae encysting in vitro, especially in human gastric juice, might be helpful in elucidating mechanisms of the definitive hosts that are directly infected by the cercariae.  相似文献

The daily emergence of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium cercariae was investigated under field conditions. Intermediate host snails of both schistosome species were collected during the rainy season, cold dry season and warm dry season and kept separately in test tubes in habitat water. Shed cercariae were collected from each of the test tubes at two hourly intervals, transferred to Petri dishes and counted. Mice were exposed to these cercariae to establish the identity of the schistosome parasites. Peak shedding for both species was observed at 1100 h during the rainy and warm dry seasons and at 0900 h during the cold dry season. Shedding before 0900 h was found only for S. haematobium in the rainy season while shedding after 1700 h occurred only during this season at both species. Shedding observed during 1900 h observation period was in the low category for both species. No shedding was observed during the 2100 h observation period for any of the species and the investigation was discontinued after this period. Only S. haematobium ova were found in the exposed mice.  相似文献

The cercarial shedding of Schistosoma bovis and S. haematobium were studied in single and mixed infections in the snail host Bulinus truncatus. The two species displayed a distinctive diurnal cercarial emergence with an earlier shedding pattern for S. bovis than S. haematobium (the average emergence peaks were respectively at 0800 h and 1200 h). In mixed infections, each species kept its own cercarial shedding rhythm with no marked alterations. The cercarial emergence pattern is proposed as a new method to identify natural mixed infections in the snail intermediate hosts. The interactions between the two parasites are discussed.  相似文献
