This study compares the results of three studies and assesses the effects of seasonal changes in the environment on populations of small mammals at three altitudes in Malawi (Zomba Plateau [1900 m], Liwonde National Park [550 m] and Lengwe National Park [100 m]). Zomba Plateau had a higher annual rainfall (mean 2244 mm), longer wet season, shorter dry season, cooler temperatures and smaller water deficit than either Liwonde NP or Lengwe NP (which had similar climates). Maximum grass biomass (and fluctuation index) was 814 g/m2 (1.7) on Zomba Plateau, 1066 g/m2 (2.7) at Liwonde, and 854 g/m2 (30.5) at Lengwe. Sixteen species of rodents were recorded, 7–9 at each study area; the species on Zomba Plateau did not occur at the lower altitudes, and the lower altitude species did not occur on Zomba Plateau. Percentage Similarity and Coefficients of Community showed that there was considerable similarity between Liwonde and Lengwe, but no similarity between either of them and Zomba Plateau. Mean population densities of small rodents (range, fluctuation index) were 23/ha (15–35, 2.3) on Zomba Plateau, 12.6 (2.7–19.1, 7.1) at Liwonde, and 14.5 (0.9–30.9, 33.9) at Lengwe. Stability of the environment tends to confer stability in demographic characteristics. Reproduction was mainly confined to the wet season (December to April) at all altitudes. Comparison of the proportion of new individuals each month, and the duration of residence by individuals, suggests that turnover of the population was slowest on Zomba Plateau and fastest at Lengwe. There was no evidence for reduced litter size, reduced opportunity for reproduction, or increased age to maturity at the highest altitude compared with the lower altitudes as has been recorded in temperate environments.  相似文献

To document the species composition, relative abundance and habitat association of small mammals, wet and dry season surveys were conducted along the altitudinal gradient of Jiren Mountain, Jimma area, Ethiopia. Sherman traps were used to capture small mammals from the six habitats: wetland, mixed plantation, open shrub, eucalyptus plantation, montane grassland and coffee plantation. The 393 trap nights, from the six habitat types, yielded 106 individual small mammals of tweleve species. The trapped rodents were Lophuromys flavopunctatus, Stenocephalemys albipes, Desmomys harringtoni, Mus mahomet, Lemniscomys barbarous, L. striatus, Tachyoryctes splendens, Mastomys natalensis and the insectivores Crocidura fumosa and C. turba. Two species of rodents Hystrix cristata and Helioscuirus gambianus were observed. Lophuromys flavopunctatus and S. albipes contributed 83.8% of the total capture. L. flavopunctatus, S. albipes and D. harringtoni were distributed in all habitats and gradients. T. splendens was captured from montane habitat, while the zebra mice were associated with the lower altitude habitats. Lophuromys flavopunctatus and M. natalensis extended their range deep into the coffee plantation habitats. Uncontrolled vegetation exploitation of the mountains for timber production and fire wood collection are the major threats. Conservation of the area to reduce the anthropogenic pressure is essential.  相似文献

The high altitude grasslands of Zomba Plateau (1900 m) in Malawi are inhabited by at least eleven species of small terrestrial mammals (rodents and shrews), of which nine species were found in pellets of grass owls, Tyto capensis. Dendromus nyikae and Otomys angoniensis were the most numerous species in the pellets, although three large species, O. angoniensis, Dasymys incomtus and Pelomys fallax contributed 91–93% of the biomass of prey. Each pellet contained the remains of one to five mammals, representing a prey-biomass of 33–256 g (x?= 132 g). Data from pellets were compared with data from a 10-month live-trapping programme in the same grasslands. The most commonly trapped species were Mus triton, Lophuromys ftavopunctatus, Praomys delectorum and D. nyikae, whereas O. angoniensis, D. incomtus and P. fallax were very rarely trapped and appear to be extremely trap-shy. Two species: L. flavopunctatus (which is common) and Thamnomys dolichurus (which is uncommon) in the grasslands, were trapped but not found in the pellets. The diet of grass owls from Zomba Plateau was compared with the diets of grass owls from ten localities in South Africa. the comparison suggests that Otomys spp. are the staple prey of grass-owls throughout much of their geographical range in Africa. The diet of the grass owls was also compared with diets of the closely related barn owl (Tyto alba) from two localities in Malawi. The two species of owls prefer habitats at different altitudes, and they prey largely upon different species of small mammals.

In order to compile an annual or seasonal energy budget for a small mammal population, it is necessary to derive estimates of standing crop, consumption, egestion, digestion, excretion, assimilation, respiration, growth and reproduction. This review gives an account of the methods available for compiling such budgets, and uses results obtained from a study of Microtus agrestis in south west Britain as a worked example. This population was live–trapped on twenty occasions during the course of 2 years. Total energy flow was 309 kJ/m2 in the first year and 173 kJ/m2 in the second. The average coefficient of digestibility of the natural diet was 54–3%, the average net production efficiency was 1 –0% and the average gross ecological efficiency was 1 –2%. Peak energy flow occurred in spring and late summer each year, and coincided with peaks in the abundance and growth rate of the grasses which formed the main source of food. Previously published estimates show that the annual flow of energy is higher amongst small mammal populations inhabiting open habitats, such as grasslands, than it is in successionally more mature habitats, such as woodlands.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Twenty-three species of unionid mussels were sampled during the summer of 1975 from a 76-mile reach of the Upper Mississippi River; this represented eight species fewer than were recorded in a 1930–31 survey for the same section of the river. Of the 244 sites sampled in 1975, mussels were found at 116 sites and the ten most productive sites accounted for 40.8% of the 1205 mussels collected. There were as many as thirteen different mussel species taken from one sampling site. The two most abundant species ( Amblema peruviana and Megalonaias gigantea ) constituted 54.5% of the mussels sampled in 1975; these two species made up only 8.3% of the 1930–31 survey. Individuals of the twelve most abundant mussel species were aged, and shell-length growth equations were determined. In addition, shell-free dry weight growth rate and shell weight growth rate was determined for Amblema peruviana . The calculated annual production for A. peruviana (assuming a mean density of 1 per m2) was 482 mg/m2 shell-free dry weight, and 14.471 g/m2 shell weight.  相似文献

Eleotrid larvae (2.1–16 mm) were collected from surface waters of a billabong in south-eastern Australia. Estimates of larval density in plankton net samples at night averaged 148.3 larvae per m3 and 16.6 larvae per m3 during the day. In contrast, pump samples provided density estimates of 8.3 larvae per m3 at night and 0.9 larvae per m3 during the day. Larval densities did not differ between open water, snag (fallen tree) and Typha habitats, but Typha habitats yielded larger larvae than other habitats. 32.9% of larvae in pump samples were damaged and unmeasurable, creating a bias favouring larger larvae. The modal length of larvae in net samples at night was 5–6 mm, compared with 3–4 mm during the day, reflecting both greater net avoidance by larger larvae during the daytime and dispersal of smaller larvae from the surface at night. Dispersion patterns of larvae suggest that classes of larvae smaller than, and larger than 5.0 mm exhibit reciprocal diel vertical migration behaviour linked to ontogenetic changes in diet. Larvae less than 5 mm fed only during the day and preyed exclusively on rotifers, whereas larger larvae continued to feed at night and consumed mostly planktonic crustaceans.  相似文献

Small mammals in a high-altitude grassland area close to Mexico City were studied. Populations of 10 species were censused using live traps in 48 sample quadrats. Within each quadrat, vegetation characterization, including complete floristic listings, cover values for species and layers and values of habitat modification, were assessed. Habitats were described according to plant communities identified using ordination and classification methods. Nine different plant communities were obtained. Densities and abundance of all small mammal species were calculated for each of the habitats classified. Peromyscus alsloni was the most abundant species in all habitats, reaching maximum densities of 55 ha−1 in pine forest with dense ground and herb layer. Peromyscus melanotis also occurred in all habitats but at lower densities (maximum 29 ha−1). Reithrodontomys megalotis was found in all habitats except in tall dense grassland. Densities for this species were generally low (1-9 ha−1) but reached 19 ha−1 in short dense grassland. All other species were largely absent from 4–8 habitats and showed very low densities (0.75–4 ha−1). The densities of the more abundant species were largely correlated with more open habitats and higher indices of habitat modification. Lower altitude grassland habitats have a greater abundance of small mammals and a higher species richness than the medium and higher altitude, physiognomically more complex habitats. Species richness was highest in tall pine-alder forest with a species-rich, dense herb layer and lowest in pine forest with dense ground and herb layers. Species richness was positively correlated with overall small mammal density.  相似文献

The wide intertidal zone of the Quirimba Archipelago (Mozambique, East Africa) encompasses many different habitats, which all experience wide environmental variation. Large daily fluctuations in temperature occur when standing water is heated up at low tide to >10°C above ambient. Salinity may be high in the dry season and periodically almost fresh in the wet season. Very high current velocities (≈3 ms−1) may occur and the direction of water flow is often complex. Sponges were a major component of the fauna (and dominate the sessile forms) in most of the eight habitats studied: exposed reef, sheltered reef, sand-rock, cave, reef boulders, boulders on sand, mangrove swamp and seagrass meadows. The highest number of sponge species occurred in the two reef habitats: from mean values of between ≈2.5 and ≈0.5 species/m2 (upper and lower shore, respectively). The diversity of species present yielded a high Shannon index value of H=2.95 for the total of 33 species. A rank-abundance plot of the data showed a high level of equitability (J=0.84). Community similarity measurement using Bray–Curtis index showed two clusters; the exposed habitats of the reefs and sand-rock and the refugia of cave, reef and sand boulders.  相似文献

Summary Germinable seed stores of 5- and 8-year-old rehabilitated bauxite mine pits in south-west Western Australia were assessed before and after burning. These seed stores were compared to those of adjacent unmined Jarrah ( Eucalyptus marginata ) forest, to identify at what age fire can be reintroduced, in order to measure restoration success and reduce fire hazard. Soils were sampled in early summer (before fire) and late autumn (after fire). Before fire, the mean topsoil seed bank of 5-year-old sites was 2121 seeds per m2 while 8-year-old sites had a mean of 1520 seeds per m2. Only the 5-year-old sites were significantly different from the forest mean of 1478 seeds per m2 for the same season. After summer burns (and possibly due to seasonal effects) topsoil seed banks of rehabilitated areas (sampled in autumn) decreased by an average of 53 per cent. Topsoil seed banks of 5–8-year-old sites were resistant to lower intensity burns, with 362 seeds per m2 of native species surviving mild burns and 108 seeds per m2 of native species surviving after an intense summer fire. The topsoil seed reserve of 5–8-year-old rehabilitated areas had a high proportion of annual weed species while the forest sites had high levels of subshrubs and native annuals. Low-intensity burns did not alter the composition of life-forms in the soil seed bank, while intense burns favoured annual weed and shrub species. The results indicate that it is not appropriate to introduce fire to rehabilitated areas before 8 years, due to limited fuel reduction benefits and possible adverse effects on obligate seeding species. The large proportion of weed species in the soil seed bank of young rehabilitated areas is a concern, and remains a major consideration for future disturbance of these areas.  相似文献

The dispersion of salmon and trout of 0 +, 1 + and 2 + age classes was examined by electrofishing 12 sections of a stream in Perthshire, Scotland at the end of the growing season in September to October in 1972 and 1976. In 1972 sections ranged in surface area from 21 to 122 m2 and had volumes of 5.0–17.3 m3 and when surveyed in 1976 surface areas were 15–106 m2 and volumes 2.1–6.7 m3. In 1976 widths and areas of sections were 63–87% of the values for 1972, depths were 39–68% and volumes 28–52% of the earlier values. These differences were due to 1976 being drier and warmer. In both years, all sections contained 0 + and 1 + age classes of salmon and trout and some sections contained 2 + age salmon and trout. The total density of fish in a section ranged from 1.9 to 3.9 m−2 in 1972 and from 3.72 to 6.08 m−2 in 1976. There was an inverse relationship, significant in 1972 only, between the density of 0 + salmon and that of 1 + trout in the different sections. Densities of both 0 + and 1 + salmon in the sections were inversely correlated, and those of 0 + and 1 + trout were directly correlated, with area of water deeper than 10 cm.  相似文献

The 'resource balance hypothesis' proposes that the species richness of grassland vegetation is potentially highest when the N:P ratio of plant tissues is 10–15 (co-limitation), so that species richness could be raised by fertilisation with N or P at sites with lower or higher N:P ratios, respectively. Here we use data from field surveys in Swiss, Dutch and American fens or wet grasslands to analyse what changes in N:P ratios might produce noticeable changes in species richness. Plant species numbers, above-ground biomass, tissue N and P concentrations and soil pH were recorded in plots of 0.06–4 m2. In each data set, plots with intermediate tissue N:P ratios (6–20) were on average most species-rich, but N:P ratios explained only 5–37% of the variation in species richness. Moreover, these effects were partially confounded with those of vegetation biomass and/or soil pH. The unique effects of N:P ratios (excluding those shared with biomass and pH) explained 11–17% of variation in species richness. The relationship between species richness and N:P ratios was asymmetric: plots with high N:P ratios were more species-poor than those with low N:P ratios. This was paralleled by a smaller species pool size at high N:P ratios (estimated from species numbers in multiple records), suggesting that fewer species are adapted to P-limited conditions than to N-limited conditions. According to these data, species richness in wetlands may possibly be raised by P-fertilisation when the initial N:P ratio of the vegetation is well above 20, but this option is not recommended for nature conservation as it might promote common species at the expense of rare ones.  相似文献

We examined structural and physiological traits relevant to the phenology of the tropical dry forest (TDF) pioneer tree Cochlospermum vitifolium . Despite marked seasonality in rainfall, meristem activity occurred throughout the year. Leaves were produced almost continuously during the rainy season, while leaf shedding started early during drought, before changes in soil water content were observed. Phenological activity under drought included flowering and fruiting of leafless trees; bud break and shoot extension took place before the end of the dry season. Low wood density of C. vitifolium stems (0.17 g/cm3) and lignotubers (0.14 g/cm3) provided water and starch storage needed to support phenological events such as branch extension, leaf flushing, and reproduction during the dry season, and probably also contributed to survival following mechanical damage and fire, typical of early TDF successional stages. Lignotuber water and starch contents showed substantial seasonal variation, declining from the beginning of the dry season to their lowest levels at the time of reproduction and dry-season flushing. Stems progressively replaced lignotubers as main storage organs as tree size increased. Evidence for a role of water stores in buffering daily water deficits was weak. Leaf water potentials remained above −1.2 MPa and stomatal conductance below 350 mmol/m2/s, suggesting that gas exchange during the rainy season was limited to prevent xylem cavitation. Leaf shedding occurred when early-morning and mid-day ΨL converged at the rainy–dry season transition, without changes in lignotuber or soil water content, suggesting that leaves of C. vitifolium are closely tuned to atmospheric drought.

The seasonal variations in numbers and biomass of the mobile epifauna of a shallow, sandy bay in Gullmar Fjord (Sweden) was investigated during 1976–1977 using the drop-net technique. Juvenile plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L., sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus (Pallas), and brown shrimp Crangon crangon L. are the dominant epifaunal species. A net enclosing an area of 100 m2 was used, and the organisms captured were collected with a small trawl. Three stations with a water depth≤ 1 m were regularly sampled with a total number of 73 drops. Maximum abundance was for plaice in June (6 ind m-2), for the shrimp in July-August (61 ind m-2), and for sand goby in September (2 ind m-2). Standing stocks (dry wt) were 0.2, 1.5 and 0.2 g m-2 respectively. Production estimates were based on seasonal changes in size frequency and information on specific growth rates. The production rate was for plaice (0-group) 0.3 g m-2 yr-1, for the shrimp 1.5, and for sand goby 0.2 g m-2 yr-1. Reliable estimates of the absolute abundance can be derived from the mean catch per unit area only when the efficiency of the fishing gear is known. After 6 hauls with the trawl in the drop-net enclosure more than 85% of the shrimps were caught and after the fifteenth haul less than 1% were still left. The fishing efficiency of a push-net in relation to the drop-net was for the shrimp 50%, for plaice 35% and for sand goby 17%.  相似文献

Population and habitat occupancy patterns of small mammals in five woodland-savannah habitats (riverine grassland, miombo, mopane, talus, thicket) were studied at Sengwa Wildlife Research Area in Zimbabwe between July 1992 and July 1993. The study was initiated following a drought year and extended over a year of average rainfall. Fourteen species of small mammals were recorded during mark-and-recapture live-trapping. Populations of most species were low during the 1992 cool dry and hot dry seasons, began increasing during the hot wet season, and attained peak densities during the 1993 cool dry season. The greatest amplitudes of density fluctuations were exhibited by the bush squirrel ( Paraxerus cepapi ) and the multimammate mouse ( Mastomys natalensis ). The numbers of habitats occupied by a single species ranged from one to four, although the majority of captures for each species tended to occur in a single habitat. The habitats occupied by an individual species during the season of lowest density was always the same as the one in which it reached its highest density. Temporal variation in density was greatest in riverine grassland and least in talus. Overall low densities during this study may have resulted from a combination of drought and impacts of large mammals on small mammal habitats.  相似文献

Nekton dynamics were studied in two contrasting habitats in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico. Over an annual cycle, a total of 83 fish species used the high-salinity fringing mangrove/ Thalassia testudinum habitat and biomass ranged from 0.43 to 3.43 g m−2. The highest biomass occurred during the dry season when aquatic primary production was highest (i.e. 333 g C m−2 year−1). By contrast, 65 species used the freshwater and low-salinity riverine mangrove/Crassostrea virginica/Vallisneria habitat and biomass ranged from 0.57 to 1.48 g m−2 with the highest biomass occurring during the wet season, the time of highest primary production in this habitat (i.e. 219 g C m−2 year−1). The high- and low-salinity habitats serve as ecological bridges between freshwater areas and the sea. Fish life histories have evolved to utilize these habitats for spawning, feeding and nursery grounds in a manner which generally leads to the use of different habitats during the periods of highest primary productivity.  相似文献

The age, growth, population densities and annual production of an isolated population of brown trout ( Salmo trutta L.) and bullhead ( Coitus gobio L.) were investigated over a 5 year period in Trout Beck in the northern Pennines. Additional data were obtained from two other sites; Great Dodgen Pot Sike and the River Tees.
Trout growth rates were low, particularly in Dodgen Pot Sike, but ages up to VIII were recorded. Bullhead growth rates were similar to those in the Tees at Cow Green (Crisp et al. , 1974), though the Moor House bullheads had a higher survival rate. Population densities of trout ranged from 0.10–0.22/m2, with a fry contribution of 0.80%. The bullhead population in Trout Beck was sparse, generally 0.1/m2, though an 0 group value of 0.46/ma was estimated in 1967. At Tees Bridge values ranged from 2.5–7/8/m2. Most trout matured by age III, though in Great Dodgen Pot Sike only half of the females were mature at age IV.
Annual production was estimated from Allen graphs. Trout production ranged from 1.02–3.50 g/m2/year, the fry contributing up to 51.5% of the total. A value of 0.48 g/m2/year was obtained for bullheads in the Trout Beck system in a year of good recruitment, whilst bullhead production at Tees Bridge was 7.43 g/m2/year, with fry and I group contributing 48.7 and 37.5% respectively. The high survival rate, irregular recruitment, and poor growth of these high altitude populations is discussed. Growth and reproductive peculiarities of the Great Dodgen Pot Sike trout are also discussed.  相似文献

Adaptations to extreme low light in the fern Trichomanes speciosum   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Trichomanes speciosum is a threatened species restricted to sheltered, very humid sites. Uniquely amongst European ferns, differing ecological tolerances of the gametophyte and sporophyte generations are manifested as widely differing distributions. The perennial, vegetatively propagating gametophyte persists in drier, colder, darker habitats than the sporophyte. In sites where the gametophyte grows, light availability was found to be < 1 μmol m2 s1 for approx. 85% of daylight hours, rarely or (in some sites) never rising above 10 μmol m2 s1. Much of the time, light was < 0.01% of full sunlight. Measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence yield show that these plants have optimal photosynthesis at light intensities c . 5–10 μmol m2 s1, the highest light to which they are normally exposed to in their natural environment. The absence of any capacity for reversible nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching means that there is little or no protection of the photosynthetic apparatus from light-induced damage. We conclude that these plants are able to create what are essentially monocultures in their extreme environments only because of a combination of low metabolic rate (at low temperatures) and an ability to make efficient use of what little light is available to them by morphological and physiological means.  相似文献

The forest on the strictly protected island Vorsø in Horsens Fjord has since 1952 been examined every ten years to discover the number, basal area, wood volume and aboveground biomass of the species. This paper describes the results from 1982 and the development up to that. The dominating species are Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus glabra and Fagus sylvatica. The two forests, "Vesterskov" (6.09 ha) and "Østerskov" (2.48 ha) respectively, were, in 1982, still immature. Their number of stems per ha were: 756 and 509; basal area: 38 m2 and 45 m2. volume: 544 m3 and 615 m3; biomass 207 t and 268 t. The annual increase 1972–1982 was respectively 8.8 m3/ha and 0.3 m3/ha. The impact of the cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis ) is especially in "Østerskov" increasing, since the colony here was established in 1976. The succession of the forest is discussed in relation to the disturbance by the cormorants.  相似文献

We conducted wet [26 March–4 April 2003 (Apr03)] and dry [1–8 November 2005 (Nov05)] season aerial surveys of African elephants ( Loxodonta africana Blumenbach) in the Caprivi Strip, Namibia to provide an updated status report on elephant numbers and distribution and assist with a historical analysis of elephant distribution and abundance in the Caprivi Strip. During the wet season when water was available in seasonal pans, elephants were widely distributed throughout the survey area. In contrast, during the dry season, a majority of elephant herds occurred within 30 km of the perennial Kwando, Linyanti and Okavango rivers and few herds occurred within the West Caprivi Game Reserve where water in the seasonal pans was limited. We estimated 5318 elephants for the 7731-km2 survey area (0.71 elephants km−2) for the Apr03 wet season survey and 6474 elephants for the 8597-km2 survey area (0.75 elephants km−2) for the Nov05 dry season survey. Based on our aerial surveys and reports of elephant numbers and distribution from historical aerial surveys and telemetry studies, civil war, veterinary fences and human activities appear to have effected changes in African elephant abundance, distribution and movements in the Caprivi Strip, Namibia since 1988 when the first comprehensive aerial surveys were conducted.  相似文献

Benthic macroinvertebrates of a fluctuating reservoir   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
SUMMARY. Benthic macroinvertebrate distribution, abundance, and composition were observed in a fluctuating (7.7 m) central Wisconsin, U.S.A., reservoir during 1973–74. Chironomidae and Oligochaeta represented 98% of the total fauna by number. The chironomid, Chironomus plumosus , and an oligochaete, Limnodrilus , each averaged 36% of the total benthic biomass. Annual mean numbers and biomass in areas exposed to air, exposed to ice cover, or remaining inundated were 3025/m2 (1.8g/m2), 4311/m2 (4.5g/m2), and 8558/m2 (16.0 g/m2), respectively. A substantial portion of the benthic fauna was stranded and subsequently decreased rapidly in drying and frozen substrates exposed to air. Total benthic numbers and biomass were greatest immediately below the drawdown limit.
Recolonization required 3 months (mid-March to mid-June, 1974) to attain pre-drawdown values for numbers and biomass, and subsequently both were greater after reinundation than before the substrate was exposed. Recolonization of areas exposed to the air was greater in substrates containing large amounts of organic matter than in sandy areas containing little organic matter. Sorting and transportation of sediments redistributed organic materials from the regulated zone to below the drawdown limit, and macrophytes were eliminated from the regulated zone. When compared to other reservoirs and lakes, the density of benthos in the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir is neither high nor low. However, when compared with non-fluctuating reservoirs the number of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Amphipoda, and Gastropoda was low.  相似文献
