The well-preserved theropod track Weiyuanpus zigongensis, recently assigned to Eubrontes zigongensis, was not described in exhaustive detail at the time of its original discovery in 2007. Among the morphological details not described was an antero-medially directed hallux seen in five of the six tracks that make up the type trackway. Hallux traces are only rarely reported in large Lower Jurassic theropod tracks such as Eubrontes and Gigandipus, and their presence or absence may be the result of one or both of two factors: track depth and/or differences in hallux configuration in the trackmakers. Here we argue that E. zigongensis is one of the best preserved examples of a eubrontid track, which can be morphologically distinguished from other Eubrontes ichnospecies by the presence of well-defined hallux traces.

Pterosaur tracks (cf. Pteraichnus) from the Summerville Formation of the Ferron area of central Utah add to the growing record of Pteraichnus tracksites in the Late Jurassic Summerville Formation and time-equivalent, or near time-equivalent, deposits. The site is typical in revealing high pterosaur track densities, but low ichnodiversity suggesting congregations or “flocks” of many individuals. Footprint length varies from 2.0 to 7.0 cms. The ratio of well-preserved pes:manus tracks is about 1:3.4. This reflects a bias in favor of preservation of manus tracks due to the greater weight-bearing role of the front limbs, as noted in other pterosaur track assemblages. The sample also reveals a number of well-preserved trackways including one suggestive of pes-only progression that might be associated with take off or landing, and another that shows pronounced lengthening of stride indicating acceleration.

One well-preserved medium-sized theropod trackway (Therangospodus) and other larger theropod track casts (cf. Megalosauripus) are associated with what otherwise appears to be a nearly monospecific pterosaur track assemblage. However, traces of a fifth pes digit suggest some tracks are of rhamphorynchoid rather than pterodactyloid origin, as usually inferred for Pteraichnus. The tracks occur at several horizons in a thin stratigraphic interval of ripple marked sandstones and siltstones. Overall the assemblage is similar to others found in the same time interval in the Western Interior from central and eastern Utah through central and southern Wyoming, Colorado, northeastern Arizona, and western Oklahoma. This vast “Pteraichnus ichnofacies,” with associated saurischian tracks, remains the only ichnological evidence of pre-Cretaceous pterosaurs in North America and sheds important light on the vertebrate ecology of the Summerville Formation and contiguous deposits.

Abstract: New dinosaur tracksites are described from the Bajocian–Bathonian Bemaraha Formation of western Madagascar. Two track‐bearing surfaces can be followed over a distance of at least 4 km, suggesting the existence of a hitherto unrecognized megatracksite. The track assemblage is theropod dominated, but sauropod tracks also occur at one site. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the abundant theropod track material suggests that most, if not all, theropod footprints are attributable to a single trackmaker and are referred to Kayentapus isp. Although this ichnogenus, originally described from the Lower Jurassic of North America, has never been recorded from Gondwana nor from the Middle Jurassic, track morphology strongly suggests this attribution. Palaeogeographical, sedimentological and ichnological data suggest that the dinosaur tracks formed in an intertidal to supratidal setting where the coastline influenced the preferred walking direction of the animals.

A Middle Jurassic dinosaur trackway site from Oxfordshire, UK
The Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Ardley trackway site in Oxfordshire, UK is described in detail. The track site is extensive, containing over 40 more-or-less continuous theropod and sauropod trackways preserved together on a single bedding plane with some trackways up to 180 m in length. The trackways display reasonable preservation, with claw marks discernible. Sauropod trackways are by far the most abundant and are representative of taxa that exhibit both narrow and wide-gauge styles of locomotion. Theropod trackways are represented by large tridactyl prints and claw impressions that display exceptionally low pace angulation values during their walking phase. One theropod trackway is unique in that it reveals a gait transition associated with a temporary increase of speed. These dinosaurs were walking over a lime-mud firmground to hardground that was emergent, or locally very shallowly submerged. GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) data reveal that the tracks, preserved during a short time interval, trend in a north-easterly direction. Multi-herding behaviour is suggested for the sauropods of differing size. The discovery of this site adds significantly to our knowledge of the taxonomic composition of Middle Jurassic ecosystems. Evidence concerning locomotor styles employed by saurischian dinosaurs, footprint identification, potential trackmaker, social interactions and observations concerning estimates of Middle Jurassic faunal diversity, as well as aspects of dinosaur locomotor evolution are discussed.

The largest known sauropod trackway site from the Upper Jurassic in Europe has been found in the northern Jura Mountains of Switzerland. Since the initial discovery of the site in 1988, detailed ichno‐facies mapping of the sites has been undertaken and completed. Six separate sites (from 5 to 45km apart) have been located to date; the largest one, displaying 345 single imprints, extends over a surface of 7000 m2. As all of the reported sites occur within the same bed, these vertebrate prints form a megatracksite covering an area of more than 360 km2. All localities are stratigraphically within the Reuchenette Formation. Two biostratigraphically diagnostic ammonites have been found within the sequence (Aulacostephanus; Gravesia), indicating an Upper Kimmeridgian age (sensu gallico). In the easternmost sites, imprints occur on mud‐cracked tidal pond deposits, whereas the western tracksites are found in supratidal algal marsh deposits. The track‐bearing horizon is immediately below a trans‐gressive event at all the sites, suggesting that the ichnofaunas represent dinosaur activity during a relative sea‐level low‐stand. Footprint size and morphology, as well as trackway dimensions, suggest that the track producers belong to the largest sauropods yet recorded in the European Jurassic, closely resembling the Breviparopus tracks from the Middle Jurassic of Morocco.

Dinosaur track assemblages from the Houcheng Formation in the small continental Shangyi Basin of northern Hebei Province, China bridge a gap in the record of vertebrates from this unit and enrich our knowledge of ichnofaunas from the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary. Their stratigraphic position between the Middle Jurassic Yan-Liao Biota and the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Biota gives them a special importance. New discoveries allow a re-assessment of theropod and possible ornithopod tracks that are present with several trackways. Seventy-three footprints were examined and documented. Despite their smaller size, the tridactyl mesaxonic theropod tracks show morphological similarities with the ichnogenus Therangospodus known from the Upper Jurassic deposits of North America, Europe, and Central Asia. The possible ornithopod tracks lack an associated manus imprint, suggesting a bipedal trackmaker. These possible ornithopod tracks from the Houcheng Formation provide evidence for the presence of small basal ornithopods or basal Cerapoda in the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous in this region. The depositional environment was the margin of an extensive shallow lake with fluctuating water levels under seasonally dry climate.

Tracks of large theropods and a single sauropod footprint are reported from red beds at Beikeshan locality in the Middle Jurassic Chuanjie Formation, of Lufeng County, near the large World Dinosaur Valley Park complex. The Chuanjie theropod tracks are assigned to the ichnogenus Eubrontes and the large sauropod track is given the provisional label Brontopodus. All occur as isolated tracks, i.e., trackways are not preserved. Saurischian dominated ichnofaunas are relatively common in the Jurassic of China. The producers of the Chuanjie tracks may have been similar to the basal tetanuran theropod Shidaisaurus and to mamenchisaurid sauropods, which were widely distributed throughout China, during the Jurassic, and are known from skeletal remains found in the same unit. Other potential sauropod trackmakers include titanosauriforms or as-yet-unknown basal eusauropods. The ichno- and skeletal records from the Jurassic of the Lufeng Basin are largely consistent, and both document the presence of middle-large sized theropods and sauropods.

Mateus, O. & Milàn, J. 2009: A diverse Upper Jurassic dinosaur ichnofauna from central‐west Portugal. Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 245–257. A newly discovered dinosaur track‐assemblage from the Upper Jurassic Lourinhã Formation (Lusitanian Basin, central‐west Portugal), comprises medium‐ to large‐sized sauropod tracks with well‐preserved impressions of soft tissue anatomy, stegosaur tracks and tracks from medium‐ to large‐sized theropods. The 400‐m‐thick Lourinhã Formation consists of mostly aluvial sediments, deposited during the early rifting of the Atlantic Ocean in the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian. The stratigraphic succession shows several shifts between flood‐plain mud and fluvial sands that favour preservation and fossilization of tracks. The studied track‐assemblage is found preserved as natural casts on the underside of a thin bivalve‐rich carbonate bed near the Tithonian–Kimmeridgian boundary. The diversity of the tracks from the new track assemblage is compared with similar faunas from the Upper Jurassic of Asturias, Spain and the Middle Jurassic Yorkshire Coast of England. The Portuguese record of Upper Jurassic dinosaur body fossils show close similarity to the track fauna from the Lourinhã Formation. □Dinosaur tracks, Lusitanian Basin, Portugal, skin impressions, Upper Jurassic.

A dinosaur tracksite at Hemenkou (Shuangbai County, Yunnan Province) in the ?Middle–Upper Jurassic Shedian Formation that consists mainly of gray-purple feldspathic quartz sandstones was previously reported incorrectly as being in the Lower Cretaceous Puchanghe Formation. The previous assignment is also inconsistent with two regional geological maps. Although mostly yielding poorly preserved tracks, the site nevertheless indicates a diversity of theropod and sauropod trackmakers partly consistent with the Late Jurassic body fossils from the region. Purported ornithopod are re-evaluated here as those of theropods. The theropod tracks and trackways show distinct similarities to those of the GrallatorEubrontes plexus and can be subdivided into three morphotypes that may reflect different pes anatomy and/or substrate conditions. Two sizes of tracks (small, large) indicate the presence of different size classes or species in this area in the Late Jurassic. Similarly, the sauropod trackways document three differently sized trackmakers (small–medium–large) showing a typical wide-gauge (Brontopodus) pattern. The track record is the first evidence of theropods in the ?Middle–Late Jurassic of central Yunnan, whereas the sauropod tracks suggest a relation to the coeval basal eusauropods known from this region by skeletal remains.

The Sundance Formation (Middle-Upper Jurassic) of Wyoming is well known for pterosaur footprints. Two new partial trackways from the upper Sundance Formation of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (BICA) of north-central Wyoming are enigmatic. The trackways are preserved in rippled, flaser bedded, glauconitic sand and mud. The deposits were laid down in tidal flats, behind barrier islands, along the mesotidal Sundance Sea.

The best-preserved print of the primary trackway possesses four impressions: three shorter digits with negative rotation and an elongate, caudally-oriented mark. The primary trackway has low pace angulation. The combination of morphology and pace angulation matches neither tracks nor body fossils of horseshoe crabs, theropod dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodylomorphs, “lacertoids,” or mammaliforms. The secondary trackway, possibly consisting of undertracks, similarly possesses elongate caudal impressions but differs from the former by possessing four subparallel, cranially-oriented digits. These prints also do not closely resemble any of the aforementioned taxa. While the secondary trackway does not lend itself to conclusion, the primary track maker could have been either an injured, pathologic pterosaur or a pterosaurian taxon otherwise unknown from the ichnological record.
