The main objective of this study was to investigate boxlip mullet, Oedalechilus labeo (Cuvier, 1829), a species that lives in open, oligotrophic and stenohaline waters, exhibits slower growth rates and has a longer life span than other mugilids. A total of 1662 specimens ranging from 2.2 to 24.4 cm TL were obtained by beach seine in the eastern Adriatic Sea. The overall sex ratio was unbalanced in favour of females (1.0 : 1.3) and differed statistically from the expected 1 : 1. The reproductive season extended through summer and autumn. All specimens above 15 cm TL were sexually mature. Length‐weight relationship for males was TW (g) = 0.010 × TL (cm)2.975 and TW (g) = 0.009 × TL (cm)3.014 for females. The age study comprised 150 (38.5%) males, 192 (49.4%) females, and 47 (12.1%) immature O. labeo, for a total of 389 individuals. Age of the fish was determined by scale readings, with the maximum age of 10+ observed for both sexes. A predominance of age classes 1+ and 2+ (71.0%) in the total catch was noted. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation for combined samples were: L = 25.93 cm, k = 0.192 year?1 and t0 = ?1.427 year. The growth parameters showed that males grew at a slightly lower rate than females. The size and age frequency distributions of both sexes were not significantly different. When compared to other mugilids, O. labeo reaches the lowest maximum body length and has a relatively slower growth and a longer life span.  相似文献

Molecular phylogenetic studies are very scarce for the Mugilidae family; the present analysis using DNA sequences of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome b genes is the first study involving Brazilian mugilids. The results corroborate the monophyly of Mugil and are elucidative for the taxonomy of Brazilian mugilids. Mugil curema is clearly divided into two genetically distinct taxa, M. curema type I being closer related to Mugil hospes and the true M. curema (type II) grouping significantly with M. incilis. The results also suggest that Mugil liza and Mugil platanus should be treated as a single species or even populations of Mugil cephalus.  相似文献

Two new species of Ergasilidae are described from southern Africa; a representative of the genus Dermoergasilus Ho et Do, 1982 on the gill rackers and one of Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1932 on the gill filaments of the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L.The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, has a wide geographical distribution and is parasitized by more than 40 different species of parasitic copepods (Ho & Do, 1982). It acts as host for seven species of Ergasilidae, i.e. Diergasilus kasahari Do, 1981, Dermoergasilus amplectens (Dogiel et Akhmerov, 1952), Ergasilus seiboldi von Nordmann, 1832, Nipergasilus bora (Yamaguti, 1939) and Ergasilus lizae Kroyer, 1963, Ergasilus mugilis Vogt, 1879 and Ergasilus cyanopictus Carvalho, 1962.Ergasilids have been reported from mullets on the African continent, i.e. E. lizae from Tunisia (Raibaut, Ben-Hassine & Prunes, 1975) and Ghana (Paperna, 1969). The present study has shown that two new species of Ergasilidae occur on the southern periphery of the continent, which are described below.Type specimens were deposited in the collection of the Dept. of Zoology, Rand Afrikaans University.  相似文献

The status of the nominal species of Dicrogaster is re-assessed by means of a comparative morphological study based on newly collected material from the western Mediterranean and a critical evaluation of the published data. D. perpusilla Looss, 1902 (type-species) and D. contracta Looss, 1902 are redescribed on the basis of new material from Liza spp. D. fragilis Fernández Bargiela, 1987 is considered a junior synonym of D. fastigata Thatcher & Sparks, 1958 and D. maryutensis Al-Bassel, 1990 is considered to be nomen nudum. A key to the recognised species of Dicrogaster is presented. A new species of Forticulcita Overstreet, 1982 is described from Mugil cephalus L. in the Spanish Mediterranean and differentiated from the type-species, F. glabra Overstreet, 1982, and the recently described F. mugilis Hassanine, 2007 by its significantly smaller body size and most of its metrical data. The new species, F. gibsoni n. sp., is characterised by a narrow ‘neck’ region anterior to the genital pore and a long striated ‘tail’ region in the hindbody which is devoid of organs, such that the bulk of the uterus is restricted to the anterior half of the hindbody and the testis is located more anteriorly. F. gibsoni differs from F. glabra in having a longer forebody, smaller sucker width ratio and larger eggs, and from F. mugilis in having a smaller sucker width ratio, a hermaphroditic sac much longer than the ventral sucker and smaller eggs. The three Mediterranean forms, D. perpusilla, D. contracta and F. gibsoni are further distinguished by multivariate analyses. Keys to the species of both genera are presented.

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

Two new species of microcotylid monogeneans are described. Solostamenides platyorchis n. sp. was obtained from the gills of Mugil cephalus (Mugilidae) and Polylabroides guangdongensis n. sp. from the gills of Sparus macrocephalus, S. berda and Acanthopagrus latus (Sparidae). Solostamenides platyorchis is morphologically similar to S. mugilis (Vogt, 1878) Unnithan, 1971 and S. pseudomugilis (Hargis, 1956) Unnithan, 1971 in the structure of the copulatory organ, but differs from them in the number, arrangement and shape of the testes. Features of P. guangdongensis distinguishing it from other species of the genus include a copulatory organ lacking small spines and an extremely long polar filament on the egg. In view of this species, we suggest omitting the presence of small spines on the copulatory organ as a diagnostic character of the genus Polylabroides Mamaev & Parukhin, 1976.  相似文献

This study investigated variation in the rates of growth and mortality, and age and fork‐length (LF) compositions of two exploited species of Mugilidae, Liza argentea and Myxus elongatus, in two south‐east Australian estuaries (Lake Macquarie and St Georges Basin). An ageing protocol was developed by counting opaque growth zones on sectioned otoliths which was validated by periodically examining the otoliths of captive‐reared young‐of‐the‐year fishes, and marginal increment analysis of wild fishes. The maximum recorded age was 17 years for L. argentea and 12 years for M. elongatus, which is greater than generally observed in other species of mugilids. Growth models of each species significantly differed between sexes and, except for male L. argentea, between estuaries. Fishes from Lake Macquarie generally had a greater mean LF at age than those from St Georges Basin and females of both species generally attained a greater maximum LF and age than males. Gillnet catches of L. argentea were of similar LF and age compositions in both estuaries, whereas the age composition of catches of M. elongatus in Lake Macquarie contained a greater proportion of younger fish. Estimates of total, natural and fishing mortality were greater for M. elongatus than L. argentea across both estuaries, and estimates of total mortality were greatest for both species in Lake Macquarie. The data indicate that neither species has been overfished in these estuaries.  相似文献

Gymnodinium acidotum Nygaard, a blue-green dinoflagellate previously shown to contain cryptophycean chloroplasts and other organelles, was observed from water and soil samples and in culture. The dinoflagellate excysts from soil samples as a mononucleated colorless cell that is positively phototactic. Colorless cells in unialgal culture remain colorless and can only be maintained less than one week whereas pigmented cells cultured unialgally grow for 10 days but then decline rapidly. Colorless cells cultured with Chroomonas spp. regain chloroplasts and have been maintained in mixed cultures for nine months. Fifty-seven percent of the dinoflagellates from mixed cultures are bi-nucleated, and three cells have been observed possibly ingesting cryptophytes. We suggest that cryptophycean chloroplasts are retained and possibly utilized by G. acidotum for at least ten days and then digested.  相似文献

Thick-walled rosette-like snow algae were long thought to be a life stage of various other species of snow algae. Rosette-like cells have not been cultured, but by manually isolating cells from 38 field samples in southern British Columbia, we assigned a variety of rosette morphologies to DNA sequence. Phylogenetic analysis of Rubisco large-subunit (rbcL) gene, ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) rRNA region, and 18S rRNA gene revealed that the rosette-like cells form a new clade within the phylogroup Chloromonadinia. Based on these data, we designate a new genus, Rosetta, which comprises five novel species: R. castellata, R. floranivea, R. stellaria, R. rubriterra, and R. papavera. In a survey of 762 snow samples from British Columbia, we observed R. floranivea exclusively on snow overlying high-elevation glaciers, whereas R. castellata was observed at lower elevations, near the tree line. The other three species were rarely observed. Spherical red cells enveloped in a thin translucent sac were conspecific with Rosetta, possibly a developmental stage. These results highlight the unexplored diversity among snow algae and emphasize the utility of single-cell isolation to advance the centuries-old problem of disentangling life stages and cryptic species.  相似文献

In Escherichia coli the process of spontaneous zygogenesis (Z-mating), i.e. complete genetic mixing in the absence of a conjugative plasmid, was investigated further. Spontaneous-zygogenesis-promoting (Szp+) cells displayed strong clustering with each other and with ordinary F cells in the optimal cell density range for Z-mating. When induced to rounding by the drug mecillinam, they aggregated into large, dense, stainable syncytium-like cells leaving giant ghosts upon lysis. In Z-mating mixtures of mecillinam-treated cells, these giant cells co-purified with mating products as other cells died. Giant cells recovering from mecillinam treatment yielded monstrous, branching forms, whereas non-Szp+ coccal cells reverted to rods in one step, and some 29% of the colonies formed were identified as deriving from entities possessing two distinct genomes. Z-mating was examined between E. coli and a distantly related Serratia marcescens strain. In the presence of calcium, mecillinam-rounded cells of a stable non-complementing diploid hybrid with the E. coli phenotype segregated normally dividing cells of the Serratia form.  相似文献

Two new species of Pseudohaploporinae, Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. and Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. n., are described from intestines of the Vietnamese mullet fish Moolgarda seheli and Osteomugil cunnesius, respectively. Pseudohaploporus pusitestis sp. n. differs from two known Pseudohaploporus species, P. vietnamensis and P. planiliza, by the absence of a diverticulate hermaphroditic duct and muscular sphincters at the proximal end of the hermaphroditic sac. Metrically, P. pusitestis sp. n. is close to P. vietnamensis and differs from this species and from P. planilizum by lower maximum sizes of most parameters. Parahaploporus elegantus n. g., sp. differs from representatives of Pseudohaploporus by the presence of a single testis and the armament of hermaphroditic duct and is morphologically close to trematodes of the genus Haploporus. However, P. elegantus n. g differs from all known Haploporus species from mugilids of the Indo-West Pacific by the structure of the armament of the hermaphroditic duct and also by size of body, organs and eggs. The validity of designating two new species and a new genus of trematodes is supported by ITS and 28S rDNA sequence data. Phylogenetic reconstructions showed that the new trematodes belong to the Pseudohaploporinae, which formed a well-supported cluster within the monophyletic Haploporidae.  相似文献

Stempellia milleri sp. n. was found in blood cells and the adipose tissue of field-collected larvae of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say. Its development is different from other Stempellia species described in that it is dimorphic, producing two types of spores in adipose cells. Both were studied with the electron microscope. One spore is thin-walled and uninucleate; the other is thick-walled and binucleate. The latter spores are produced from sporonts that are somewhat similar to those of Nosema. Sporoblasts and spores of S. milleri were compared to those of Stempellia magna Kudo, and Stempellia lunata Hazard and Savage in both light and electron microscope preparations. S. milleri was transmitted experimentally to Culex pipiens pipiens, C. p. quinquefasciatus, C. salinarius, C. tarsalis, and C. territans. Transmission of S. magna to its host and other mosquito species was not possible. Although, generally low numbers of test larvae became infected with the pathogen, heavy infections were seen occasionally in individual specimens of its natural host, C. p. quinquefasciatus. Species of Aedes, Anopheles, Culiseta, Psorophora, and Uranotaenia exposed to spores of S. milleri were not susceptible to the disease.  相似文献

Summary Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.) and endod (P. dodecandra L'Herit) produce ribosome-inactivating proteins which are sequestered in leaf cell walls. These proteins display strong antiviral activity. To aid in studying the antiviral mechanism, we developed protocols to isolate protoplasts from suspension culture cells and leaves. Ninety-five percent of pokeweed or endod culture cells were converted to protoplasts using 2% cellulase, 0.25% pectinase, 0.2 M mannitol, 2% sucrose, 15 mM CaCl2 Murashige and Skoog salts, pH 5.7. Viability was >85% after 24 h. Culture-derived protoplasts were purified by centrifugation through a 15% sucrose pad. Protoplasts collected from the supernatant were then pelleted in 0.3 M mannitol. Pokeweed leaves provided respectable yields (4×106 protoplasts/g f w) of partially-purified viable protoplasts when digested in solution containing 1% cellulase, 0.2% Pectolyase, 0.4 M mannitol, CPW salts, 0.5 mM MES, pH 5.6. We were unable to completely separate cell debris from mesophyll protoplasts, which were small and easily damaged by centrifugation. Endod leaves were found to be resilient to several digestion enzymes tested.  相似文献

Abstract

A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of Cycas cuticle characteristics was undertaken in order to expand our knowledge of microscopic characters not observable under light microscopy and to clarify unresolved affinitites among some species within the genus. Whole leaf and isolated cuticle specimens from the middle region of leaflets of greenhouse-grown plants of Cycas revoluta, Cycas rumphii, Cycas circinalis, Cycas media, and Cycas normanbyana were examined using SEM for interior and exterior features. Characteristics in common include hypostomy, hair bases on abaxial and adaxial surfaces, adaxial cells randomly arranged, adaxial exterior cuticle smooth, and stomata sunken to various degrees but stomatal pit always formed by two layers of epidermal cells. Stomatal complex is of the polyperigenous type. Stomata randomly dispersed and oriented, and except C. revoluta, are not contiguous. Stomata deeply sunken in C. revoluta, intermediate in C. rumphii and C. normanbyana, and less sunken in C. circinalis and C. media. Aperture between guard cells extends the entire stomatal length in C. rumphii and C. normanbyana, ~80% in C. circinalis and C. media, and ~50% in C. revoluta. Cuticular features of C. revoluta show the greatest difference from the other species in complex relief of exterior cuticle and interior cuticular structure of subsidiary cells; C. media and C. circinalis show close similarity to each other and their stomatal complex dimensions fall within the same unique cluster using principal component analysis under normalized variables. C. normanbyana and C. rumphii show the most similarity to each other in cuticular micromorphology. Stomatal complex dimensions of these two species fall into a second cluster that also includes C. revoluta. These data contrast with current taxonomy placing C. normanbyana synonymous to C. media.  相似文献

Eupolystoma vanasi is described as a new species of the Polystomatidae parasitic in the urinary bladder of Schismaderma carens in Northern Province and KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. This is the third Eupolystoma species described from Africa and the first polystomatid from Schismaderma, an anuran genus that is primitive with respect to the other African bufonids in which Eupolystoma has been recorded. The species is distinguished by body size (this is the largest Eupolystoma known; mean length of adults 6 mm), by genital spine number (4 in comparison with 6-9 in other species), marginal hooklet length (greater than in other African species), and by the small size of the ovary and testis. In a sample of 27 toads, 37% were infected with up to 130 parasites per host (mean intensity 37). Worm burdens of this magnitude are exceptional amongst polystomatids in general but are characteristic of Eupolystoma, where there may be repeated re-infection of adult hosts and, uniquely, a direct, internal cycle of auto-infection.  相似文献

Physiological and structural changes in cells of Synechocystis aquatilis f. aquatilis acclimated to grow in the presence of high zinc levels (2.20–3.30 mg·L?1) were investigated. Growth of these cells showed a decreased specific growth rate and final yield of about 60% and 50%, respectively, of the values found for cells grown in the presence of 0.21 mg zinc·L?1 (control culture). The higher the zinc concentration in the culture medium, the more pronounced the reduction in the chl a content. Regardless of zinc concentration, S. aquatilis possessed three distinct carotenoids. A decrease in carotenoid content accompanied the decrease of chl a, and the proportions of the pigments to each other were not affected by zinc. The photosynthetic performance of cells cultured in the presence of high zinc levels showed a decline in both the apparent photosynthetic efficiency and the photosynthetic maximal rate. In these cells the PSII reaction centers became partially closed, and the electron transport activity around PSII and PSI was reduced to 61% and 38% of the control values, respectively, which may indicate an altered PSII/PSI stoichiometry. In addition, electron micrographs revealed a reduced amount of thylakoid membranes, indicating that acclimation to high zinc levels led to a decrease in the overall number of photosynthetic units. On the other hand, light microscopic observation of negative‐stained cells revealed the presence of a thick mucilaginous layer surrounding the high zinc‐acclimated cells. This extracellular material could retain high amounts of metal ions from the medium, thus providing the Synechocystis cells a mechanism to circumvent toxic levels of zinc.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations and assemblage structure of fish species were investigated in Beymelek Lagoon, on the south‐western Mediterranean coast of Turkey. A total of 3956 fish, mainly juveniles, from 24 species representing 11 families were sampled by gillnets and trammel nets from February 2006 to January 2007. Twelve of the species were marine straddlers, 11 were marine‐estuarine‐dependent and one was catadromous. Numerical contribution of marine‐estuarine‐dependent species to the total fish abundance was 86.2%, while marine straddlers contributed only 13.8%. Despite the higher number of species, the numerical abundance of marine straddlers was lower than the abundance of marine‐estuarine‐dependent species. The contribution of catadromous species by number was only 0.02%. The assemblage was taxonomically dominated by Sparidae (seven species, 51.3%), Mugilidae (five species, 36.0%), and Clupeidae (one species, 10.3%). Among sparids, Sparus aurata, Diplodus sargus and Lithognathus mormyrus contributed 38.0, 7.2 and 4.6% to the total catch, respectively. The most abundant mugilid species was Liza saliens with 25.2%, followed by Chelon labrosus 5.2%, and Liza aurata 4.0%. Contribution by the other mugilid species to total catch was quite low. The Clupeidae (10.3%) were represented by Sardinella maderensis with 9.1% of the total catch. While the upper reaches of Beymelek Lagoon were dominated by Sparus aurata and Liza saliens, dominant in the lower reaches were Sardinella maderensis, Sparus aurata, Diplodus sargus, Lithognathus mormyrus and Liza saliens. Sparids were generally caught from mid‐summer to mid‐winter while mugilids were caught throughout the year. Clupeids occurred mainly from autumn to spring.  相似文献

Summary Comparison of lytic-dose response behavior of seven lepidopteran cell lines to the activated delta-endotoxin polypeptides ofBacillus thuringiensis subspecieskurstaki (HD-263) andaizawai (HD-112) indicated distinct differences among the lines. The lines derived fromSpodoptera speciesS. exigua (URC-SE-1A) andS. littoralis (UIV-SL-575) were more susceptible to lysis byaizawai towin (Bta) thankurstaki toxin (Btk) as were cells from theLymantria dispar line (IPLB-LD652Y). However, the concentrations of Bta required for lysis of 50% of URC-SE-1A and IPLB-LD652Y cells (LC50) were 0.2 to 0.8 μg/ml compared to 5 to 9 μg/ml for UIV-SL-575 cells. In comparison, Btk LC50 concentrations for the three lines were similar (14 to 19 μg/ml). Cells fromS. frugiperda (IPLB-SF-21AE) andTrichoplusia ni (TN368) were similar in their response to Bta (LC50=2.5 to 3.7 μg/ml) and Btk (LC50=1.0 to 2.8 μg/ml) whereas the lines derived fromHeliothis spp. were the least susceptible to both toxins. The LC50 concentrations for Bta with theH. zea line (IPLB-HA-1075) andH. virescens line (BCIRL-HV-AM1) were >50 μg/ml and for Btk were >50 μg/ml and 42 to 50 μg/ml, respectively, yet for both lines Btk was the more cytolytic. Cytolysis of TN368 cells could be inhibited to varying extents by preincubation of the toxins with the aminosugars of galactose, mannose, and glucose and theirN-acetyl derivatives. The unsubstituted hexoses were not inhibitory. The order of decreasing inhibitory effectiveness was the same for both toxins regardless of the derivative species and followed the order galactose, mannose, and glucose. Also, inhibition of cytolysis could be achieved to varying extents by assaying cells grown in medium with tunicamycin. Lysis with Btk was inhibited 68 and 37% using treated cells of TN368 and IPLB-LD652Y, respectively; however, no inhibition was observed with URC-SE-1A cells. Further, no inhibition of Bta-mediated lysis was obtained with tunicamycin-grown cells of the three lines.  相似文献

Lankesteria clarki sp. n. from the treehole mosquito, Aedes sierrensis (Ludlow) in California, is described. This species can be separated from the closely related ones, L. culicis (Ross) and L. barretti Vávra, by the totally intracellular nature of the trophozoite, the shape of the gamont, the position of the gamont nucleus and the structure and position of the residual body in the spore. Morphologic and ultrastructural investigations of gametogenesis and sporogony were conducted and the host relationship discussed. Lankesteria clarki was found in mosquitoes collected from all treeholes examined near Novato in Marin County, California and an examination of over 6,000 larvae of A. sierrensis showed an infection rate of 27.5%. The parasite is capable of destroying the midgut epithelial cells during its trophic stage and Malpighian tubule cells during gametogenesis and sporogony.  相似文献
