Adult population of a dragonfly Nannophya pygmaeaRamber inhabited in a damp ground was investigated with mark-and-recapture method in 1975. The following results about the seasonal changes of the population size and distribution in the habitat were obtained. Adults emerged from late May to mid August. The number of the adults was most abundant in early June, but that of matured males in early July. From the recapture data, the estimate of daily survival rate was 0.82, and the length of immature stage in males was estimated as 5 days or so. Total number of post-teneral adults emerged in the habitat was estimated as about 9,000. The mean crowding-mean density regression method was applied for the analysis of the distribution pattern of the adults. Matured males showed a spaced-out distribution, while females and immatured males distributed themselves rather aggregatively. Such a distribution pattern of the matured male would be attributed to their territorial behaviour. The territorial behaviour was considered to force the matured males to extend the distribution area in July when they were most abundant. From the above-mentioned results and some observations, the meaning of the territoriality in this species was discussed.  相似文献

The libellulid dragonfly genus Sympetrum has been recognized since 1833, but lacks any morphological synapomorphies to unite the taxon. Previous researchers have disagreed over which species belong in Sympetrum, bringing the monophyly of the genus into question. We use DNA sequence data from 6 genetic loci (16S, tRNA-valine, 12S, elongation factor 1 alpha, cytochrome oxidase subunit I, and the second internal transcribed spacer region) and 25 morphological characters (mainly genitalic) to test the monophyly of Sympetrum with Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses. Under Bayesian inference, all Sympetrum species included in this study form a clade, which also contains the Hawaiian monotypic genus Nesogonia, often considered a close relative of Sympetrum. Phylogenetic analyses also reveal at least six strongly supported clades (treated as species groups) within Sympetrum, but relationships between these species groups remain unresolved or unsupported. Although the relationships between Sympetrum species groups remain unresolved, several species groups include taxa from multiple biogeographic regions/continents, and the species group sister to the rest of Sympetrum contains migratory species from the New World and Africa. This pattern suggests a complex biogeographic history in Sympetrum shaped by vicariance and dispersal. Preliminary estimates of the divergence dates of Sympetrum species groups outline a rapid radiation of the groups approximately 32-38 million years ago, possibly influenced by cooling and drying climates of the late Eocene and early Oligocene.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of the dragonfly,Orthetrum japonicum, is described. Behavioral processes of turnover of territorial males, simultaneous guarding of 2 females by a male, and copulation by non-territorial males are described. The males with longer hind wings won the territorial conflicts more frequently. The total duration of territorial residence of a given male was correlated with the number of his matings, but not correlated with the length of his abdomen or hind wings. The territorial site with the lower degree of vegetation cover was occupied by males more consistently. Males in more consistently occupied territorial sites did not have longer abdomen and hind wings than males in less consistently occupied sites. The territorial site where the larger number of copulations was observed was not occupied more consistently. Selection episode analysis using the method of Arnold & Wade (1984a, b) showed that direct selection on the hind wing length favored the short wing and that direct selection on the abdomen length favored the long abdomen during mating.  相似文献

Males of the calopterygid damselfly Hetaerina vulnerata remain with their mates after copulating with them. The species exhibits two unusual features of post-copulatory mate guarding. First, a male will often leave his territory to accompany a female in tandem on a search for oviposition sites elsewhere. Second, a male will perch near his ovipositing female even though she completely submerges when egg-laying and cannot be captured and mated by another male while she is underwater. These activities carry two potential costs: (1) a male may miss other receptive females while guarding one mate and (2) he may lose his territory to an interloper while he is absent. These costs were low, however, because territorial males secured only one mating per 3.6 days on average. Moreover, 23 times out of 26, territorial males reclaimed their plots quickly after being away for 30–60 min. The gain from postcopulatory guarding came from being present to recapture a female should she fly up from the water after rejecting an oviposition site. There was a 40% chance that a female would leave one site to search for another during an oviposition bout. If the male were not present, his mate would be captured and mated by another individual (no female ever selected an oviposition site without being carried to it by a male). Her new partner would fertilize the remaining eggs in the female's clutch (if sperm precedence occurs in this species). The total number of eggs fertilized by a male will be affected by how well he prevents any one mate from copulating again before she lays her entire clutch and the total number of receptive females he captures. The variation in the degree of mate guarding by male odonates seems to be the evolutionary outcome of differences in fitness gains derived from these two competing activities in different ecological settings.  相似文献

Male soapberry bugs (Jadera haematoloma)face severe mating competition at the northern edge of their range due to male-biased adult sex ratios. Copulations lasting up to 11 days may serve a mate guarding function (encompassing four or more ovipositions), but copulation duration is highly variable, with some pairings lasting as little as 10 min. Data were gathered to describe factors that influence the reproductive costs and benefits of prolonged copulation. Estimated copulation durations (mean ± SD) were 20 ± 23 h in the lab and 50 ± 8 h in the field and were only weakly affected by sex ratio. Females mated for 5 min produced as many fertile eggs as those mated for 600 min laid; they became depleted of fertile sperm after about 25 days. In twicemated females, the first male's paternity was reduced by about 60%, and all females (N = 13) whose mates were removed experimentally mated again within an average of 6 min. The outcome of sperm competition on a perclutch basis was not highly predictable. The possibility of increased sperm displacement in longer copulations was not tested. Males often guarded females during oviposition and successfully defended them from intruding single males by recopulating. Such intrusions occurred in the majority of oviposition attempts observed in nature. Even though most females mated promiscuously, in a focal aggregation with a mean sex ratio of 2.2 ± 0.4 males/female, the interval between matings by males was commonly several days. Males appeared to respond facultatively to several aspects of the distribution and availability of females. The intensities of mating competition and sperm competition indicate that monogamous mate guarding should be favored over nonguarding in nature. Unpredicted brief. pairings may result from assessment by males of female reproductive value or of their own physical condition, or from female resistance.  相似文献

1. Histological correlative studies on the cerebral neurosecretory cells, the corpora allata and the oocyte development strongly suggest the involvement of cerebral NSM mostly produced by the A cells of pars intercerebralis and the CA hormone in the vitellogenesis. 2. Biochemical studies reveal the incorporation of haemolymph proteins and lipids in the yolk during vitellogenesis. 3. Exogenous administration of the extract of the brain-CC and FME demonstrates, to some extent, the stimulation of protein synthesis during vitellogenesis in the haemolymph by the cerebral NSM and the CA hormone, while the lipid metabolism lies, mostly, under the control of juvenile hormone.  相似文献

Summary The neurosecretory cells of the ventral ganglia in the adult dragonfly, Orthetrum chrysis, are classified into A, B, C1 and C2 cells. The neurosecretory material in the ventral ganglia is composed of PAS-positive material with 1-, 2-glycol groups and some proteins. The proteins rich in cystine or cysteine occur predominantly in the A cells, moderately in C cells and negligibly in B cells. Proteins containing arginine occur in A and B cells only, and those containing basic amino acids occur in C2 cells. The neurosecretory pathways and the neurohemal organs are also described.  相似文献

Larvae of the widespread dragonfly, Libellula quadrimaculata, were adapted to a series of salt solutions, and the osmotic pressure, and sodium, potassium and chloride concentrations in the haemolymph measured. The regulation of potassium is extremely efficient over the range 0–50 m-mole/l. external concentration. Above this, larvae die. Sodium and chloride are regulated to a lesser extent, the larvae being able to withstand considerable changes in the concentration of these ions in the haemolymph. However, at higher external concentrations, the haemolymph concentration of these ions is maintained below that of the external medium. The osmotic pressure is regulated in parallel with sodium concentration over most of the range tested. However, in higher salinities, the osmotic pressure of the haemolymph does not fall below that of the external medium. This is seen as a strategy to limit the amount of drinking in saline media. Overall, the osmoregulatory system of L. quadrimaculata resembles that of brackish-water insects, rather than that of the more strictly freshwater dragonflies that have been studied.  相似文献

A field observation of the dragonflyNannophya pygmaea revealed that males prefer some territorial sites to others, and that these same sites attract more females than others (Tsubaki & Ono, 1986, 1987). In this paper, we asked if males choose territorial sites in response to female dispersion or distribution of resources. We conducted 3 types of removal experiments to test the following 2 hypotheses; (1) a male may assess the territory quality by the female encounter rate at his site (learning), (2) a male may assess the resource quality (or quantity) in the territory. The results of our experiments show that males discriminate attractive and less attractive territorial sites without any mating experience within the study area. Moreover, the territorial site preference of males was not affected by the mating experience. Therefore, males probably choose territorial sites by resource quality rather than by female dispersion.  相似文献

The larva of Libellula foliata (Kirby) is described based upon mature larvae from the Biosphere Reserve of ??El Triunfo?? in the state of Chiapas. It belongs to the small group of species without dorsal protuberances, L. composita (Hagen), L. comanche Calvert and L. saturata Uhler. The following combination of characters permits the separation of L. foliata larva from the other aforementioned larvae: tergites 6?C10 uniformly colored, no lateral spines on segments 8?C9, 5?C6 palpal setae and 3 long premental setae. After this finding, only the larvae of Libellula gaigei Gloyd and L. nodisticta Hagen remain undiscovered for the Mexican species of Libellula.  相似文献

Here we describe the antennal lobe of Libellula depressa (Odonata, Libellulidae), identified on the basis of the projections of the afferent sensory neurons stemming from the antennal flagellum sensilla. Immunohistochemical neuropil staining as well as antennal backfills revealed sensory neuron terminal arborizations covering a large portion of the antennal lobe. No clear glomerular structure was identified, thus suggesting an aglomerular antennal lobe condition as previously reported in Palaeoptera. The terminal arbors of backfilled sensory neurons do, however, form spherical knots, probably representing the connections between the few afferent neurons and the antennal lobe interneurons. The reconstruction revealed that the proximal part of the antennal nerve is divided into two branches that innervate two spatially separated areas of the antennal lobe, an anterioventral lobe and a larger posteriodorsal lobe. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that one tract of the antennal nerve of L. depressa contains olfactory sensory neurons projecting into one of the sublobes, while the other tract contains thermo-hygroreceptive neurons projecting into the other sublobe.  相似文献

Libellula depressa (Odonata, Libellulidae) is an exophytic dragonfly ovidepositing eggs in clutches on the surface of floating plants and algae. The present work investigates, at ultrastructural level, the gradual differentiation of the egg envelopes and the chorionic changes after egg deposition in water. The ovary of the mature female of L. depressa is composed of numerous strings of panoistic ovarioles, where the eggshell formation takes place gradually throughout the activity of the follicle cells. The present data show that the egg envelopes are constituted of a very thick electrondense vitelline envelope, a thin endochorion and an extremely thick exochorion composed of a fibrillar matrix resting on a thin electrondense layer. After deposition in water, L. depressa eggs, initially white and almost transparent, gradually become brown spots in a semitransparent jelly coat, rich of incorporated debris. The jelly coat enveloping the eggs of L. depressa derives exclusively from the exochorion, constituted of a fibrillar matrix, which swell at contact with water. The jelly-like coat performs an adhesive function and presumably a protective role during egg segmentation and ensuing larval hatching.  相似文献

Zenithoptera dragonflies are known for their remarkable bluish colouration on their wings and unique male behaviour of folding and unfolding their wings while perching. However, nothing is known about the optical properties of such colouration and its structural and functional background. In this paper, we aimed to study the relationship between the wing membrane ultrastructure, surface microstructure and colour spectra of male wings in Zenithoptera lanei and test the hypothesis that colouration functions as a signal in territorial fights between males. The results show that the specific wing colouration derives from interference in alternating layers of melanized and unmelanized cuticle in the wing membrane, combined with diffuse scattering in two different layers of wax crystals on the dorsal wing surface, one lower layer of long filaments, and one upper layer of leaf-shaped crystals. The results also show that the thicker wax coverage of the dorsal surface of the wings results in increased brightness and reduced chroma. In the field experiments, we have demonstrated that there is a reduction of aggressive reactions of rivals towards individuals with experimentally reduced amount of blue wing colouration.  相似文献

Adult dragonflies can be divided into two major groups, perchers and fliers, exhibiting notably different flight behaviour. Previous studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the link between the wing macro-morphology and flight style in these two groups. In this study, we present the first systematic investigation of the micro-morphological differences of wings of percher and flier dragonflies in four closely related species from the family Libellulidae. Our results suggest that the shape and material composition of wing microstructural components and, in particular, the nodus are adapted to facilitate the specific wing functioning in fliers and perchers. The findings further indicate a decreasing trend in the area proportion of the soft resilin-dominated cuticle in the nodus in the series of species from typical perchers to typical fliers. Such a reduction in the resilin proportion in the nodus of fliers is associated with an increase in the wing aspect ratio. The knot-shaped protrusion at the nodus of perchers, which becomes notably smaller in that of strong fliers, is likely to act as a mechanical stopper, avoiding large wing displacements. This study aims to develop a novel framework for future research on the relationship between wing morphology and flight behaviour in dragonflies.  相似文献

The ovaries consist of large number of panoistic ovarioles in the last instar nymph and the adult dragonfly Orthetrum chrysis (Selys). In the nymph the vitellaria are compactly filled with the primary oocytes and the vitellogenesis takes place only in the adult stage. During vitellogenesis oocytes change widely in their shape, size and cytological organisation and their developmental stages can be divided into pre-vitellogenic, early-vitellogenic, vitellogenic, late-vitellogenic and maturation age. PAS-positive material appears first around the germinal vesicle in the early-vitellogenic stage and lateron it migrates towards the periphery. Glycogen appears in the late-vitellogenic stage. DNA is abundantly present in the nuclei of the oocytes during the pre-vitellogenic and completely absent in early-vitellogenic, vitellogenic, late-vitellogenic and maturation stages. It is observed in the nuclei of follicular epithelial cells of all the stages. RNA is abundantly present in cytoplasm of the pre-vitellogenic oocytes but lateron is gradually decreases. During the early-vitellogenic and vitellogenic stages high concentration of RNA in the follicular epithelial cells has been observed. The protein bodies appear first in the interfollicular spaces and towards the periphery of the oocytes just near the enveloping follicular epithelial cells, during the early-vitellogenic stage suggesting the formation of yolk proteins from the haemolymph. In Orthetrum chrysis the sudanophilic bodies appear first in the follicular cells and then lie in the peripheral region of the oocytes suggesting the incorporation of yolk lipid either from the follicular epithelium or from the haemolymph through the follicular epithelium. The phospholipids are synthesised in pre-vitellogenic to the late-vitellogenic stages. In the late-vitellogenic stages the phospholipid granules are present abundantly in the follicular epithelium while in the maturation stage they disappear suggesting their utilisation in the formation of membranes like vitelline and chorion. The neutral fats are present in the form of large number of droplets in the oocytes during the maturation stage.  相似文献

Ultrastructural and electrophysiological (single-cell recordings) investigations were carried out on the coeloconic sensilla borne by the apical antenna of the larvae of Libellula depressa (Odonata: Libellulidae). These sensilla appear as pegs located in pits. One of them is a compound sensillum constituted of two fused pegs in a common pit and the other two are single pegs located in separated pits close to each other. Coeloconic sensilla show position and ultrastructural details very similar to those described in insect hygroreceptors. The electrophysiological recordings on the apical antennae of the last larval instar of L. depressa clearly show the presence of moist and dry cells responding antagonistically to humidity changes. This study gives the first evidence of hygroreceptors in dragonfly larvae and represents the first electrophysiological approach to larval sensilla of aquatic insects. The presence of hygroreceptors in L. depressa larvae is in agreement with the hygropositive response shown by these insects in laboratory and field behavioural experiments.  相似文献

An ultrastructural investigation (SEM, TEM) on the antennal flagellum of the adult of the dragonfly Libellula depressa (Odonata:Libellulidae) revealed sensilla located in pits on the lateral-ventral side of the antenna. These sensilla are represented by sensilla coeloconica and by deeply sunken sensilla. The sensilla coeloconica are innervated by three unbranched dendrites, which enter the peg and show a dendrite sheath ending at the base of the peg. The peg has no socket and its cuticle is irregular with wide pore-like structures at the base of which actual pores are visible. The structure of these coeloconic sensilla is in agreement with that reported for single-walled insect chemoreceptors. The deeply sunken sensilla are represented by two kinds of sensilla styloconica, named type-1 and type-2, located at the bottom of deep cavities appearing as simple openings on the antennal surface. These sensilla are no-pore sensilla with inflexible socket and unbranched dendrites and, notwithstanding their structural differences, share common features typical of thermo/hygroreceptors. The presence of chemoreceptors in adult dragonflies sheds light on evolutionary trends in insect perception; the previously unknown occurrence of thermo/hygroreceptors in dragonflies is very important in view of the reported ability of Odonata to thermoregulate heliothermically.  相似文献

An outline of the morphology of the secondary genitalia of libellulid dragonflies is given together with a more detailed treatment of the components of the fourth (distal) segment of the penis. The variations of penis structure in 70 species, representing ten of the 11 subfamilies, are surveyed and catalogued. There is remarkable diversity in the presence and form of penis structures, particularly those associated with the medial process, namely the flagelium, cornua and inner lobes. A comparable survey of females shows that they can be provisionally divided into ten types according to the number and size of their sperm-storage organs. Comparisons of penis structures with the sperm-storage organs of females suggests that in species whose females store large amounts of sperm, usually doing so in one or a pair of organs, males possess highly extensible, lobate and bristly penes, commonly equipped with cornua. By contrast, in those species in which the females store small volumes of sperm, usually doing so in three organs, the penes bear either flagella equipped with proximally directed spines or with large terminal barbs, or they have narrow, spiny inner-lobes which resemble flagella. Some functional interpretations are proposed in the light of sperm competition. The variability of genital structure can be interpreted adaptively and does not closely reflect phylogenetic relationships. Functionally convergent structures have evolved a number of times from different origins.  相似文献
