The role of thyroid gland hormone in the ontogenesis of the Large African Barb Barbus intermedius sensu Banister, 1973 (Teleostei; Cyprinidae)--the supposed ancestral species which produced the species flock of the large African Barbs of the Lake Tana (Ethiopia)--has been studied. It has been shown that the thyroid hormone influences the period of many morphological processes and a change in its level causes heterochrony, reflecting on the definitive morphology of fish. Thus, it can be assumed that even a slight change in activity of the thyroid axis in the process of ontogenesis can be the cause of wide variability of the morphological features of B. intermedius and is at the basis for the fast diversification of the species flock of Big African Barbs of Lake Tana.  相似文献

The 16 African large barb fish species of Lake Tana inhabit different ecological niches, exploit different food webs and have different temporal and spatial spawning patterns within the lake. This unique fish species flock is thought to be the result of adaptive radiation within the past 5 million years. Previous analyses of major histocompatibility class II B exon 2 sequences in four Lake Tana African large barb species revealed that these sequences are indeed under selection. No sharing of class II B alleles was observed among the four Lake Tana African large barb species. In this study we analysed the class II B exon 2 sequences of seven additional Lake Tana African large barb species and African large barbs from the Blue Nile and its tributaries. In addition, the presence and variability of major histocompatibility complex class I UA exon 3 sequences in six Lake Tana and Blue Nile African large barb species was analysed. Phylogenetic lineages are maintained by purifying or neutral selection on non-peptide binding regions. Class II B intron 1 and exon 2 sequences were not shared among the different Lake Tana African large barb species or with the riverine barb species. In contrast, identical class I UA exon 3 sequences were found both in the lacustrine and riverine barb species. Our analyses demonstrate complete partitioning of class II B alleles among Lake Tana African large barb species. In contrast, class I alleles remain for the large part shared among species. These different modes of evolution probably reflect the unlinked nature of major histocompatibility genes in teleost fishes.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at .An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Helerochronies caused by changes in the hormonal status are proposed to play a major role in the diversification of the Lake Tana barbs of Labeobarbus (=Barbus) genus (Dgebuadze and Mina, 2008). To test this hypothesis, we (i) compared temporal patterns of cranial development in L. intermedius, likely ancestral for Tana species flock, and L. brevicephalus and L. megastoma proposed to be paedomoiphic and peramoiphic, respectively; (ii) studied the role of thyroid hormone (TH) in the regulation of L. intermedius development; (iii) evaluated the effect of TH changes on the definitive morphology, and (iv) evaluated the possible role of TH in diversification of Tana barbs. Skull development was found to be heterochronicaily changed in L. brevicephalus and L. megastoma as compared to L. intermedius; revealed heteroclironies may account for differences in skull proportions distinguishing these barbs, TH was shown to play a major role in the regulation of ontogeny. Changes in TH level cause heterochronies in the development of a skull, axial skeleton, fins and fin girdles, squamation, and dentition. Heteroclironies were shown to influence adult morphology of these structures. These findings support the hypothesis of the involvement of developmental and hormonal factors in the diversification of the Lake Tana large barbs.  相似文献

Direct observations on three forms (morph types) of spawning barbs, considered by some authors as different species, were carried out in September–October 2005 at the Gumara River and its small tributary, the Ducalit, in the Lake Tana basin. The spawning barbs were sampled using cast nets. Barbs of different morphotypes composed common spawning aggregations and were caught together. It is likely that troutlike females mate extensively with intermedius males and, probably, with bigmouth small-eye males. Experiments in artificial fertilization and rearing showed that, during the embryonic period, there was no increase in mortality of progeny from crosses of barbs of different morphotypes, in comparison with homonomic crosses, thus suggesting an absence of postzygotic reproductive isolation between the morphotypes. At the same time, mortality of progeny from crossing barbs with Varicorhinus beso Rüppell, 1836 was very high during the earliest stages of development, suggesting strong, even if incomplete, reproductive isolation ensured by postzygotic mechanisms. 29 quantitative and 18 qualitative skull characters were studied in the African large barbs (Barbus intermedius complex) from Lake Tana (Ethiopia). Based on results of principle components analysis phenetic relationships of 12 morphotypes were assessed. External features diagnostic of the morphotypes were found in individuals substantially different in the skull characters. The obtained data along with the data on morphological diversity of large barbs from Ethiopia beyond the Lake Tana basin suggest origination of the Lake Tana complex of forms from a complex of forms that existed in the upper reaches of the Blue Nile before the lake came into being, and the extant morphotypes of the Lake Tana barbs originated from three or four forms that composed the ancestral riverine local complex.  相似文献

Aerial surveys have been used to estimate abundance for several wild bird species but its application for wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) populations has been limited. We surveyed Rio Grande wild turkey (M. gallopavo intermedia) populations during March 2006 using an R44 helicopter. We used flocks with radio-tagged birds to estimate flock detectability. We also used simulations to evaluate accuracy and precision and examine power to detect trends in population change. We observed that wild turkey flock detectability was 94.7% (74.0–99.9%; 95% CI). Our simulations suggested helicopter surveys would underestimate abundance by about 5.6% (4.6% CV). Surveying 980 to 1,960 km2 (requiring 27 to 55 h of flight time) can provide sufficient power (≥0.80) to detect a 10 to 25% change in abundance over a 4- to 5-year period.  相似文献

Ancient lakes are excellent laboratories for evolutionary research, where species can be studied in the cradle where they originated. In this article, we investigate two endemic ostracod species flocks from the two oldest lakes in the world, Lake Baikal (LB) (ca. 28 myr) and Lake Tanganyika (LT) (ca. 12 myr), with DNA sequence data. Nuclear ITS1 failed to resolve the phylogeny of both flocks. Whilst most phylogenetic relationships of the Tanganyika flock are resolved with mitochondrial COI, the Baikalian tree contains multifurications of up to seven different clades. The Tanganyikan Cyprideis flock shows higher genetic variability, which matches its higher morphological variability. A significant deviation from a constant divergence rate through time indicates that the Cytherissa flock most likely experienced explosive speciation events during its earlier history. Comparative analyses of substitution rates furthermore revealed that they are not clock-wise for COI. Ancestral Cytherissa probably radiated in LB 5–8 myr ago, around the time when the cold, oxygenated abyss was formed in LB. The Tanganyikan Cyprideis flock is almost twice as old as the Baikalian Cytherissa flock, and possibly older than LT itself, ca. 15 myr. The Cyprideis flock has survived drastic lake level changes and resulting salinity crises during its entire history.  相似文献

For the first time, Piscicola brylinskae was described from Lake Vechten in the village of Bunnik, near Utrecht — The Netherlands. Until now, P. brylinskae has been found in Poland in Lake Maróz and in the Łyna River near Olsztyn (the northern part of Warmian-Masurian voivodeship). Thanks to proper conservation the coloration of P. brylinskae was described for the first time. Applying 32 indexes resulted that P. brylinskae clustered to Caspiobdella fadejewi. Analysis based on 113 non-metric characteristics has shown that P. brylinskae is most similar to Piscicola margaritae. Though, P. brylinskae do not form with P. margaritae dichotomic branching nor with any other species from this cluster, it could confirm that it is an individual species of the Piscicola genus.  相似文献

In this article, I analysed the biogeographical distribution and the historical origin of freshwater fish of the Ethiopian Rift Valley (ERV) region which is not a homogeneous area. The Ethiopian region, including Eritrea and part of Somalia, includes 13 basins as geographical units. A comparison was carried out with four Near East geographical units. A correspondence analysis was applied to presence–absence data for the 17 basins × 170 species’ matrix. Then, a faunistic distance (Euclidian distance) between basins was computed from the coordinates of factors retained in this new analysis. From this faunistic distance, a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed and a dendrogram produced by a UGPMA classification. The old Abyssinian ichthyo-province (sensu Roberts, Zool J Linn Soc 57:249–319, 1975) was not homogeneous in species composition. I distinguished four main groups based on the present species composition which seemed to be mainly influenced by historical events. The species composition of the ERV basins was not randomly distributed and can be classified into four main geographical units. The importance of the historical events was demonstrated and two origins can be considered. The westernmost basins are under Nilo-Sudan influence whereas the easternmost ones seem to have been colonised from the Near East. In this Eastern part it can be distinguished three different groups: the main ERV province and two derived sub-regions, Lake Tana with a Labeobarbus intermedius related species flock and the Coastal Red Sea, characterised by a very impoverished freshwater fish fauna.  相似文献

The infection rate by Ligula intestinalis has been studied in 14 fish species (Varicorhinus beso, Garra dembecha, Labeobarbus intermedius, L. crassibarbis, L. tsanensis, L. megastoma, L. brevicephalus, L. nedgia, L. acutirostris, L. gorgorensis, L. dainellii, L. macrophthalmus, Barbus humilis, and B. tanapelagius) from Lake Tana (Ethiopia). Plerocercoids have been found only in the fishes of gg. Labeobarbus and Barbus. Ligula has been found in seven out of ten studied large barbels. Barbels larger than 23 cm are not infected with ligula. It is revealed that a specific “synergism” exists between Ligula intestinalis and cestode Khawia sp. parasitizing the intestine of barbels. This synergism is manifested as a regular cooccurrence of these parasites. In juvenile Labeobarbus, fish coparasitized by Khawia sp. and L. intestinalis occurred more often than fish infected with each of this parasite separately.  相似文献

The aim of the project was to determine the effects of sudden change in potassium concentration in inland saline water on the survival, osmolality and condition indices of western Australian King Prawn—Penaeus latisulcatus Kishinouye. Australia has large volumes of inland saline water that could be used for aquaculture but is often deficient in K+. Western king prawn is a candidate species for culture in inland saline water. Such waters require K+ fortification for prawn survival and growth. Trials were conducted in tanks to determine the effect of sudden change in K+ concentration in inland saline water samples on the survival, osmolality and condition indices of western king prawns. Prawns in tanks were acclimated to inland saline water procured from Wannamal—an inland location in Western Australia. After 3 days of acclimation, prawns were subjected to sudden increase in medium K+ concentration over 1 h, ranging from 80% to 100% of the marine water K+ concentration by adding potassium chloride. Identical inland saline water was added to the control tanks over the same time period. Survival, ingestion rate and osmoregulatory capacity (OC) were then recorded over 19 days. At the conclusion of the trial, survival ranged from 71% to 78% in the potassium-enriched tanks whereas 100% mortality was observed in the control tanks by day 11. Ingestion rate of prawns was significantly higher in the experimental tanks than in the control. Osmoregulatory capacity of potassium-enriched prawns was significantly lower post- than pre-ionic change and significantly higher at the conclusion of the trial than both pre- and post-ionic change. There was no significant difference in OC between water types at any time period. These results indicate that prawns can tolerate sudden increase in K+ content in inland saline water and the higher K+ concentration increases survival and OC, but other measures indicate the prawns were experiencing stressful conditions. Changes in gene expression contribute to reproductive isolation of species, adaptation, and development and may impact the genetic fate of duplicated genes. African clawed frogs (genus Xenopus) offer a useful model for examining regulatory evolution, particularly after gene duplication, because species in this genus are polyploid. Additionally, these species can produce viable hybrids, and expression divergence between coexpressed species-specific alleles in hybrids can be attributed exclusively to cis-acting mechanisms. Here we have explored expression divergence of a duplicated heterodimer composed of the recombination activating genes 1 and 2 (RAG1 and RAG2). Previous work identified a phylogenetically biased pattern of pseudogenization of RAG1 wherein one duplicate—RAG1β—was more likely to become a pseudogene than the other one—RAG1α. In this study we show that ancestral expression divergence between these duplicates could account for this. Using comparative data we demonstrate that regulatory divergence between species and between duplicated genes varies significantly across tissue types. These results have implications for understanding of variables that influence pseudogenization of duplicated genes generated by polyploidization, and for interpretation of the relative contributions of cis versus trans mechanisms to expression divergence at the cellular level. Synodontis catfish are a species‐rich, tropical pan‐African genus that predominately occur in fluviatile environments, but which also form a small radiation within Lake Tanganyika (LT). Here we estimate Synodontis relationships, based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA, greatly expanding previous sampling. Data were analysed using different methods of phylogenetic inference: Bayesian (also testing compositional heterogeneity), likelihood and parsimony, in order to investigate biogeographic history and the extent of intralacustrine speciation within this group. Bayesian‐relaxed clock analyses were used to estimate timings of radiations. Our analyses reveal a single origin of the LT flock with the inclusion of the nonendemic S. victoriae, and that these taxa evolved relatively recently (5.5 Ma), considerably later than the formation of LT (9–12 Ma). Two internal endemic clades diversified at a similar time (2–2.5 Ma), corresponding to a period of climate change, when lake levels dropped. We find evidence for a further species flock, composed of riverine southern African taxa, the diversification of which is very rapid, 0.8 Ma (95% HPD: 0.4–1.5) and infer a similar scenario for the diversification of this flock to southern African serrachromine cichlids in that they radiated in the now extinct lake Makgadikgadi. We also reveal that the biogeographic history of Synodontis catfish is more complex than previously thought, with nonmonophyletic geographic species groupings.  相似文献

Morphology of a rare species—large-scale eelpout Lycodes macrolepis Taranetz et Andriashev, 1935—has been studied. It was shown that the main lateral line of this species has a ventrolateral configuration rather than medial, as was considered previously. Large-scale eelpout is an endemic species of the Sea of Okhotsk; evidence of its finding in the Sea of Japan is based on the erroneous classification of another eelpout species.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the only known intact species flock of large cyprinids, the 16 Labeobarbus species of Lake Tana (Ethiopia), has been extensively studied for the past two decades. Seven species of Labeobarbus are known to migrate >50 km upstream into tributary rivers for spawning during the rainy season (July to October), whereas eight other species are absent from these rivers and probably developed a new strategy of lacustrine spawning (macro-spatial segregation). One species (L. intermedius) probably spawns in the lake as well as in the rivers. Between the early 1990s and 2000s, the riverine spawners showed a decline of 75% in both biomass and number in both fishery independent surveys and in commercial catches. Reproductive migration makes fishes vulnerable to fisheries and other threats like habitat modifications. Lacustrine spawners are probably more resilient as they are not known to form spawning aggregations that can easily be exploited by fishermen. In addition, upstream rivers and catchments around Lake Tana are highly degraded by erosion and recently subjected to intensive habitat modification for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. This article reviews results of field studies on the Labeobarbus spawning migration from Lake Tana to spawning rivers, giving emphasis on segregation and homing. It also summarizes existing and emerging threats which form potential causes for the decline of the migratory Labeobarbus species. Knowledge gaps on the reproductive biology are identified for further investigation.  相似文献

Excessive iodine intake is known to induce hypothyroidism in people who have underlying thyroid disorders. However, few studies have been performed on subjects with normal thyroid function without a history of autoimmune thyroid disease. We hypothesized that high iodine intake may cause a subtle change in thyroid function even in subjects with normal thyroid function. We analyzed 337 subjects (64 men and 273 women; mean age, 49 years) who showed normal levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) and thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-Ab) by measuring the urinary iodine excretion, free T4 (FT4), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The results showed urinary iodine excretion had negative correlation with FT4 (γ = −0.11, p = 0.043) and showed a positive trend with TSH (γ = 0.10, p = 0.068). We found that 61.7% of subjects had circulating TPO-Ab within normal reference range. In all subjects, TPO-Ab levels were negatively correlated with FT4 (γ = −0.17, p = 0.002) and positively with TSH (γ = 0.13, p = 0.021). In conclusion, high iodine intake can negatively affect thyroid hormone levels in subjects with normal thyroid function. Population-based study will be helpful for further clarification.  相似文献

In this study we identified and characterized a major latex lectin — designated as EtLLH — with antimicrobial activity from the succulent African milk tree Euphorbia trigona. The lectin is highly concentrated in the latex of E. trigona and appears to be composed of at least two subunits with a molecular mass of 32 kDa. EtLLH shares significant similarities to known plant lectins — ricin from Ricinus communis and agglutinin from Viscum album coloratum — which specifically bind D-galactose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, the major building blocks of many fungal cell walls. Antimicrobial activity assays revealed an impact of EtLLH on three phytopathogenic filamentous ascomycetes. The germination of the conidiospores and the hyphal growth of Aspergillus niger and Fusarium graminearum were severely inhibited by EtLLH already at concentrations below 0.1 mg cm−3, while the effect on germination of the melanized conidiospores of Botrytis cinerea was less significant.  相似文献

To better understand the diversification of the endemic thalassoid (i.e. marine-like) cerithioidean gastropods of Lake Tanganyika, as well as the origin and significance of brooding among lake species, we here redescribe the anatomy and ontogeny of the ovoviviparous Tiphobia horei from Lake Tanganyika and compare it to that of Lavigeria sp. A, representing another ovoviviparous lake clade that has acquired a uterine brood pouch independently. Within the phylogenetic framework provided by recent molecular analyses, the distant relation of these two taxa is corroborated by many external and internal anatomical differences. Comparison of the brood pouches demonstrates that they each bear unique features consistent with their independent modification for brooding. Despite representing functionally analogous structures, they also share several similarities in organization likely representing symplesiomorphies of the Lake Tanganyika species flock. The ontogeny is characterized by the presence of a velum and by delayed calcification producing a characteristically wrinkled embryonic cap. Comparison with other brooding cerithioideans reveals that T. horei and Lavigeria sp. A retain many more embryos than other freshwater cerithioideans of comparable size with a uterine brood pouch, possibly facilitated by the presence of longitudinal lamellae. Compartmentalization of the oviduct and delayed calcification is strongly linked to the brooding of embryos.  相似文献
