Brown tides caused by the pelagophyte Aureoumbra lagunensis DeYoe et Stockwell have formed ecosystem disruptive algal blooms in shallow lagoons of Texas (TX), USA, for more than two decades but have never been reported elsewhere. During the summer of 2012, a dense brown tide occurred in the Mosquito Lagoon and northern Indian River Lagoon along the east coast of Florida (FL), USA. While chlorophyll a levels in this system have averaged 5 μg L−1 during the past two decades, concentrations during this brown tide reached ∼200 μg L−1. Concurrently, levels of nitrate were significantly lower than average and levels of dissolved organic nitrogen were significantly higher than average (p < 0.001 for both). Sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of the bloom community and of single cell isolates were identical to those of Aureoumbra lagunensis DeYoe et Stockwell from TX. The A. lagunensis brown tide in FL bloomed to densities exceeding 106 cells mL−1 (quantified with a species-specific immuno-label) from July through September, began to dissipate in October, but maintained densities exceeding 105 cells mL−1 in some regions through December of 2012. The decline of the bloom was associated with near-hypoxic conditions and more than 30 fish kills reported within the Mosquito Lagoon in September 2012, a number far exceeding all prior monthly reports in this system dating to 1996. Wild northern quahog populations (a.k.a. hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria) suffered mass die offs during the brown tide and eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) that settled during 2012 were significantly smaller than prior years. Clearance rates of hard clams and eastern oyster were significantly reduced in the presence of Mosquito Lagoon bloom water and A. lagunensis monocultures isolated from the Mosquito Lagoon at densities of ∼106 cells L−1. The expansion of harmful brown tides caused by A. lagunensis to these estuaries represents a new threat to the US southeast coast.  相似文献

The photosynthetic and repiratory metabolism of Zostera marina and maerl communities was compared, in the same area of the Bay of Brest in March–April, using benthic chambers. PE curves for both oxygen and carbon were established for bottom irradiances between 0 and 525 μmol m−2 s−1. An exponential function was fitted to calculate daily production. Community metabolic quotients did not differ for maerl and seagrass beds. Community photosynthetic quotients were significantly higher (1.19) whereas community respiratory quotients were lower (0.70) than 1. Maerl and seagrass bed PE curves mainly differed by the minimum saturating irradiance (Ek). Net community production was estimated to 26.8 mmol C m−2 d−1 for Z. marina meadows and 8.6 mmol C m−2 d−1 for maerl beds. The two communities can, therefore, be considered as autotrophic during the March–April period. Community respiration did not differ between Z. marina meadows and maerl beds, with an average value of 53.8 mmol C m−2 d−1 during a day. In similar environmental conditions, the production of maerl beds corresponds to approximately one third that of seagrass meadows. The maerl communities, therefore, form productive ecosystems, relevant to temperate coastal ecosystems functioning.  相似文献

The sensitivity of bacteria to the marine neurotoxins, brevetoxins, produced by the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis and raphidophytes Chattonella spp. remains an open question. We investigated the bacteriocidal effects of brevetoxin (PbTx-2) on the abundance and community composition of natural microbial communities by adding it to microbes from three coastal marine locations that have varying degrees of historical brevetoxin exposure: (1) Great Bay, New Jersey, (2) Rehoboth Bay, Delaware and (3) Sarasota Bay, Florida. The populations with limited or no documented exposure were more susceptible to the effects of PbTx-2 than the Gulf of Mexico populations which are frequently exposed to brevetoxins. The community with no prior documented exposure to brevetoxins showed significant (p = 0.03) changes in bacterial abundance occurring with additions greater than 2.5 μg PbTx-2 L−1. Brevetoxin concentrations during K. brevis blooms range from ∼2.5 to nearly 100 μg L−1 with typical concentrations of ∼10–30 μg L−1. In contrast to the unexposed populations, there was no significant decrease in bacterial cell number for the microbial community that was frequently exposed to brevetoxins, which implies variable sensitivity in natural communities. The diversity in the bacterial communities that were sensitive to PbTx-2 declined upon exposure. This suggests that the PbTx-2 was selecting for or against specific species. Mortality was much higher in the 200 μg PbTx-2 L−1 treatment after 48 h and >37% of the species disappeared in the bacterial communities with no documented exposure. These results suggest that toxic red tides may play a role in structuring bacterial communities.  相似文献

This study comprised (1) a field survey of intertidal seagrass (Zostera capricorni) biomass, cover and photosynthetic potential and sediment characteristics at a range of contrasting sites in three New Zealand harbours, and (2) a microcosm experiment comparing plant responses to sediments from extant versus historical seagrass sites. The field survey showed that the sediment physico-chemical characteristics were generally consistent with the limited previous reports for Zostera environments, although the total P concentration range was higher (0.08–0.72 mg P g−1). Overall, 52% of variation in seagrass cover was explained by sediment water content (R = 0.54) and organic content (R = −0.56). Twenty-two percent of variation in seagrass biomass was explained by sediment total P and redox potential (both R = −0.35). Intra-harbour seagrass–sediment relationships were more significant (explaining up to 82% of plant variation) but harbour-specific. In the microcosm experiment, threefold higher Z. capricorni biomass was maintained on extant than historical sediments but not conclusively linked to measure sediment characteristics. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that significant relations can exist between estuarine sediment conditions and Z. capricorni growth responses, and suggest that detrimental change in sediment conditions may be a contributing factor in seagrass decline.  相似文献

Annual blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis in the eastern Gulf of Mexico represent one of the most predictable global harmful algal bloom (HAB) events, yet remain amongst the most difficult HABs to effectively monitor for human and environmental health. Monitoring of Karenia blooms is necessary for a variety of precautionary, management and predictive purposes. These include the protection of public health from exposure to aerosolized brevetoxins and the consumption of toxic shellfish, the protection and management of environmental resources, the prevention of bloom associated economic losses, and the evaluation of long term ecosystem trends and for potential future bloom forecasting and prediction purposes. The multipurpose nature of Karenia monitoring, the large areas over which blooms occur, the large range of Karenia cell concentrations (from 5 × 103 cells L?1 to >1 × 106 cells L?1) over which multiple bloom impacts are possible, and limitations in resources and knowledge of bloom ecology have complicated K. brevis monitoring, mitigation and management strategies. Historically, K. brevis blooms were informally and intermittently monitored on an event response basis in Florida, usually in the later bloom stages after impacts (e.g. fish kills, marine mammal mortalities, respiratory irritation) were noted and when resources were available. Monitoring of different K. brevis bloom stages remains the most practical method for predicting human health impacts and is currently accomplished by the state of Florida via direct microscopic counts of water samples from a state coordinated volunteer HAB monitoring program. K. brevis cell concentrations are mapped weekly and disseminated to stakeholders via e-mail, web and toll-free phone numbers and provided to Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) for management of both recreational and commercial shellfish beds in Florida and to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for validation of the NOAA Gulf of Mexico HAB bulletin for provision to environmental managers. Many challenges remain for effective monitoring and management of Karenia blooms, however, including incorporating impact specific monitoring for the diverse array of potential human and environmental impacts associated with blooms, timely detection of offshore bloom initiation, sampling of the large geographic extent of blooms which often covers multiple state boundaries, and the involvement of multiple Karenia species other than K. brevis (several of which have yet to be isolated and described) with unknown toxin profiles. The implementation and integration of a diverse array of optical, molecular and hybrid Karenia detection technologies currently under development into appropriate regulatory and non-regulatory monitoring formats represents a further unique challenge.  相似文献

There is a world-wide trend for deteriorating water quality and light levels in the coastal zone, and this has been linked to declines in seagrass abundance. Localized management of seagrass meadow health requires that water quality guidelines for meeting seagrass growth requirements are available. Tropical seagrass meadows are diverse and can be highly dynamic and we have used this dynamism to identify light thresholds in multi-specific meadows dominated by Halodule uninervis in the northern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Seagrass cover was measured at ∼3 month intervals from 2008 to 2011 at three sites: Magnetic Island (MI) Dunk Island (DI) and Green Island (GI). Photosynthetically active radiation was continuously measured within the seagrass canopy, and three light metrics were derived. Complete seagrass loss occurred at MI and DI and at these sites changes in seagrass cover were correlated with the three light metrics. Mean daily irradiance (Id) above 5 and 8.4 mol m−2 d−1 was associated with gains in seagrass at MI and DI, however a significant correlation (R = 0.649, p < 0.05) only occurred at MI. The second metric, percent of days below 3 mol m−2 d−1, correlated the most strongly (MI, R = −0.714, p < 0.01 and DI, R = −0.859, p = <0.001) with change in seagrass cover with 16–18% of days below 3 mol m−2 d−1 being associated with more than 50% seagrass loss. The third metric, the number of hours of light saturated irradiance (Hsat) was calculated using literature-derived data on saturating irradiance (Ek). Hsat correlated well (R = 0.686, p < 0.01; and DI, R = 0.704, p < 0.05) with change in seagrass abundance, and was very consistent between the two sites as 4 Hsat was associated with increases in seagrass abundance at both sites, and less than 4 Hsat with more than 50% loss. At the third site (GI), small seasonal losses of seagrass quickly recovered during the growth season and the light metrics did not correlate (p > 0.05) with change in percent cover, except for Id which was always high, but correlated with change in seagrass cover. Although distinct light thresholds were observed, the departure from threshold values was also important. For example, light levels that are well below the thresholds resulted in more severe loss of seagrass than those just below the threshold. Environmental managers aiming to achieve optimal seagrass growth conditions can use these threshold light metrics as guidelines; however, other environmental conditions, including seasonally varying temperature and nutrient availability, will influence seagrass responses above and below these thresholds.  相似文献

Using shipboard data collected from the central west Florida shelf (WFS) between 2000 and 2001, an optical classification algorithm was developed to differentiate toxic Karenia brevis blooms (>104 cells l−1) from other waters (including non-blooms and blooms of other phytoplankton species). The identification of K. brevis blooms is based on two criteria: (1) chlorophyll a concentration ≥1.5 mg m−3 and (2) chlorophyll-specific particulate backscattering at 550 nm  0.0045 m2 mg−1. The classification criteria yielded an overall accuracy of 99% in identifying both K. brevis blooms and other waters from 194 cruise stations. The algorithm was validated using an independent dataset collected from both the central and south WFS between 2005 and 2006. After excluding data from estuarine and post-hurricane turbid waters, an overall accuracy of 94% was achieved with 86% of all K. brevis bloom data points identified successfully. Satisfactory algorithm performance (88% overall accuracy) was also achieved when using underway chlorophyll fluorescence and backscattering data collected during a repeated alongshore transect between Tampa Bay and Florida Bay in 2005 and 2006. These results suggest that it may be possible to use presently available, commercial optical backscattering instrumentation on autonomous platforms (e.g. moorings, gliders, and AUVs) for rapid and timely detection and monitoring of K. brevis blooms on the WFS.  相似文献

While cyst germination may be an important factor for the initiation of harmful/toxic blooms, assessments of the fluctuation in phytoplankton cyst germination, from bottom sediments to water columns, are rare in situ due to lack of technology that can detect germinated cells in natural bottom sediments. This study introduces a simple mesocosm method, modeled after previous in situ methods, to measure the germination of plankton resting stage cells. Using this method, seasonal changes in germination fluxes of toxic dinoflagellates resting cysts, specifically Alexandrium fundyense (A. tamarense species complex Group I) and A. pacificum (A. tamarense species complex Group IV), were investigated at a fixed station in Kesennuma Bay, northeast Japan, from April 2014 to April 2015. This investigation was conducted in addition to the typical samplings of seawater and bottom sediments to detect the dinoflagellates vegetative cells and resting cysts. Bloom occurrences of A. fundyense were observed June 2014 and February 2015 with maximum cell densities reaching 3.6 × 106 cells m−2 and 1.4 × 107 cells m−2, respectively. The maximum germination fluxes of A. fundyense cysts occurred in April 2014 and December 2014 and were 9.3 × 103 cells m−2 day−1 and 1.4 × 104 cells m−2 day−1, respectively. For A. pacificum, the highest cell density was 7.3 × 107 cells m−2 during the month of August, and the maximum germination fluxes occurred in July and August, reaching 5.8 × 102 cells m−2 day−1. Thus, this study revealed the seasonal dynamics of A. fundyense and A. pacificum cyst germination and their bloom occurrences in the water column. Blooms occurred one to two months after peak germination, which strongly suggests that both the formation of the initial population by cyst germination and its continuous growth in the water column most likely contributed to toxic bloom occurrences of A. fundyense and A. pacificum in the bay.  相似文献

Using ten years (2003–2012) of satellite Chlorophyll-a data, we report that annual phytoplankton bloom climax in the Northwest Pacific marginal seas (17°–58°N) delays northward at a rate of 22.98 ± 2.86 km day−1. The spring bloom is a dominant feature of the phytoplankton seasonal cycle in this region, except for the northern South China Sea, which features a winter bloom. The sea surface hourly Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) intensity averaged over the bloom peak duration is nearly uniform (1.04 ± 0.10 W m−2 h−1) among the four sub-regions (i.e. the northern South China Sea, the Kuroshio waters, the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk), although different algal species in these four distinct ecological provinces could adapt to a much larger change in other environmental parameters (including total daily PAR, day length, sea surface temperature, net surface heat flux, mixed layer depth, wind speed and euphotic depth). The differences of the hourly PAR intensity between the four provinces during their bloom periods are smaller than those during non-bloom seasons. In contrast, an increasing total daily PAR (W m−2 day−1), due to the longer day length at higher latitudes, may balance decreasing sea surface temperature and induce algal flowering. Our results point to an optimal hourly light intensity for the annual phytoplankton bloom peak timing in this entire region, which could potentially become an indicator for the requirement of these annual bloom peaks.  相似文献

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have posed a serious threat to the aquaculture and fisheries industries in recent years, especially in Asia. During 1998 there were several particularly serious blooms in the coastal waters of south China, which caused a serious damage to aquaculture. We report a massive dinoflagellate bloom near the mouth of Pearl River in November 1998 with analyses of data from both in situ sea water measurements and satellites. A multi-parameter environmental mapping system was used to obtain real-time measurements of water quality properties and wind data through the algal bloom area, which allow us to compare water measurements from inside and outside of the bloom areas. This bloom with high concentrations of algal cells was evident as a series of red colored parallel bands of surface water that were 100–300 m long and 10–30 m wide with a total area of about 20–30 km2 by visual. The algal density reached 3.8×107 cells l−1 and the surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was high. The algal species has been identified as Gymnodinium cf. catenatum Graham. The water column in the bloom area was stratified, where the surface temperature was 24–25 °C, the salinity was 18–20%, and the northern wind was about 3–4 m s−1 in the bloom area. The SeaWiFS image has shown high Chl-a area coinciding with the bloom area. The sea surface temperature (SST) image of the Pearl River estuary combined with the in situ measurements indicated that the bloom occurred along a mixing front between cooler lower salinity river water and warmer higher saline South China Sea (SCS) water.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of seagrass and epiphytic algal primary production were measured in an eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in the Akkeshi-ko estuary, Hokkaido, Japan (43°02′N, 144°52′E). During spring and early summer, eelgrass biomass increased, with a high production (maximum: 2.89 g C m−2 day−1), but the production and biomass of epiphytic algae remained low. In contrast, epiphytic algae bloomed in August, with a high production (5.21 g C m−2 day−1), but eelgrass production ceased and its biomass subsequently decreased. Therefore, the major primary producers in this eelgrass bed switched seasonally from eelgrass in spring and early summer to epiphytic algae in late summer and autumn. Epiphytic algae maintained similar productivity because of the change of photosynthetic kinetics and the dominant epiphytic diatom changed from highly adhesive species to less adhesive or filamentous small species during the bloom. This suggests that the change of epiphyte density and biomass was due to change of its loss rate, possibly due to herbivorous grazing rate. Moreover, competition between epiphytic algae and eelgrass for nutrients and light may also affect the dramatic seasonal changes in the major primary producers.  相似文献

Since resting cysts are a potential seeding source for blooms, the presence of these cysts in sediments is a marker of an established population for a number of harmful algal species. The spatial patterns of cyst density in relation to sediment characteristics and hydrodynamics are still largely misunderstood. This study investigated the spatial distribution of resting cysts belonging to the Alexandrium tamarense species complex (Dinophyceae) in sediments of a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Thau Lagoon, France). This lagoon, hosting shellfish farming, is regularly impacted by toxic Alexandrium catenella blooms. The average cyst density across the whole lagoon was rather low, <20 cysts g−1 of dry sediment (DS). However, densities varied widely among sampled stations, with the highest density (∼440 cysts g−1 DS) recorded in a shallow cove named Crique-de-l’Angle, which is the only area where dense blooms of A. catenella and A. tamarense have been recorded in the years preceding this survey. An analysis using spatial autoregressive models demonstrated that cyst densities were highly spatially autocorrelated (indicating that close stations tended to have more similar cyst densities) with accumulation sites. With respect to sediment characteristics (5 granulometric fractions <2 mm and biochemical components), the highest densities were found in silty sediments containing high proportions of water and organic matter. Nevertheless, the linkage between cyst density and sediment structure was not always verified; this reflected the influence of hydrodynamics on the sedimentation of cysts and sediment particles, and on the dispersal of cysts away from the bloom area by wind-induced currents, suggesting that hydrodynamics was responsible for the spatially autocorrelated distribution of cyst densities.  相似文献

The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent huge tsunami greatly affected both human activity and the coastal marine ecosystem along the Pacific coast of Japan. The tsunami also reached Funka Bay in northern Japan and caused serious damage to the scallop cultures there, and this tsunami was believed to have affected the coastal environments in the bay. Therefore, we investigated the changes in the spatial abundance and distribution of the toxic dinoflagellates Alexandrium tamarense cysts before the tsunami (August 2010) and after the tsunami (May 2011, August 2011, May 2012 and August 2012) in the bay. Further, monthly sampling was conducted after the tsunami to identify seasonal changes of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense cysts and vegetative cells. Significant increases were observed in the populations of A. catenella/tamarense cysts, comparing the abundances before the tsunami (in August 2010; 70 ± 61 cysts g−1 wet sediment) to those just after it (in May 2011; 108 ± 84 cysts g−1 wet sediment), and both A. tamarense bloom (a maximum density was 1.3 × 103 cells L−1) and PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) toxin contamination of scallops (9.4 mouse unit g−1 was recorded) occurred in the bay. Seasonal sampling also revealed that the encystment of A. tamarense and the supply of the cysts to bottom sediments did not occur in the bay from September to April. These results strongly suggested that the mixing of the bottom sediments by the tsunami caused the accumulation of the toxic A. tamarense cysts in the surface of bottom sediment through the process of redeposition in Funka Bay. Moreover, this cyst deposition may have contributed to the toxic bloom formation as a seed population in the spring of 2011.  相似文献

The phosphorus (P) fractions and bioavailable P in the sediments from the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve were investigated using chemical extraction methods for the first time to study the distribution and bioavailability of P in the reserve sediments. A hypothesis was presented suggesting that the bioavailable P in the sediments could be evaluated using the P fractions. The total phosphorus (TP), inorganic phosphorus (IP), organic phosphorus (OP), non-apatite phosphorus (NAIP), and apatite phosphorus (AP) contents in the sediments were in the ranges of 303.87–761.59 mg kg−1, 201.22–577.66 mg kg−1, 75.83–179.16 mg kg−1, 28.86–277.90 mg kg−1, and 127.36–289.94 mg kg−1, respectively. The water soluble phosphorus (WSP), readily desorbable phosphorus (RDP), algal available phosphorus (AAP), and NaHCO3 extractable phosphorus (Olsen-P) contents in the sediments were in the ranges of 0.58–357.17 mg kg−1, 80.77–586.75 mg kg−1, 1.09–24.12 mg kg−1, and 54.96–676.82 mg kg−1, respectively. The correlation analysis results showed that the NAIP was the major component of the bioavailable P and that the impact of the AP on the bioavailable phosphorus may be minimal. Due to the low TP content in the sediments of the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve, the potential pollution risks of P in the sediments may not be very high. The results also show that the bioavailable P concentrations in the sediments of the Quanzhou Bay Estuarine Wetland Nature Reserve could not be evaluated by measuring the P fractions and that the hypothesis was untenable.  相似文献

Beginning in April 2002, three species of Florida puffer fish from around the state of Florida, USA were monitored for the presence of saxitoxin (STX). In total, 873 southern (Sphoeroides nephelus), 171 checkered (S. testudineus), and 53 bandtail (S. spengleri) puffer fish were collected between 2002 and 2006 from eight regions: Jacksonville, the Indian River Lagoon, Tequesta, the Florida Keys, Charlotte Harbor, Tampa Bay, Cedar Key, and Apalachicola. Emphasis was placed on collecting specimens from the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), where recreational harvesting of puffer fish led to 28 cases of saxitoxin puffer fish poisoning (SPFP) between January 2002 and May 2004. Southern puffer fish from the northern IRL routinely contained the highest concentrations of STX, with average levels in the skin of 1787 μg STXequiv./100 g tissue. Elevated concentrations were also found in the muscle (1102 μg STXequiv./100 g), gut contents (539 μg STXequiv./100 g), gonads (654 μg STXequiv./100 g), and liver (214 μg STXequiv./100 g). Lower, yet significant (above the action limit of 80 μg STXequiv./100 g tissue), concentrations of STX were also detected in the skin (599 μg STXequiv./100 g), muscle (233 μg STXequiv./100 g), gut contents (197 μg STXequiv./100 g), and gonads (239 μg STXequiv./100 g) of southern puffer fish from Tequesta in the southern IRL, as well as in the gonads (122 μg STXequiv./100 g) of Jacksonville southern puffer fish and the skin (265 μg STXequiv./100 g) of Tampa Bay southern puffer fish. STX concentrations above the action limit were also found in the skin of bandtail puffer fish from the IRL (620 μg STXequiv./100 g), Tequesta (374 μg STXequiv./100 g), and the Florida Keys (230 μg STXequiv./100 g). Checkered puffer fish collected from the IRL, Tequesta, and the Florida Keys on average were nontoxic, containing STX levels below the action limit in all tissues.  相似文献

Confined to Texas, USA, for more than 20 years, brown tides caused by Aureoumbra lagunensis emerged in the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon, Florida, USA, during 2012 and 2013, affording the opportunity to assess whether hypotheses developed regarding the occurrence of these blooms are ecosystem-specific. To examine the extent to which top-down (e.g. grazing) and bottom-up (e.g. nutrients) processes controlled the development of Aureoumbra blooms in Florida, nitrogen (N) uptake, nutrient amendment, and seawater-dilution, zooplankton grazing experiments were performed and the responses of Aureoumbra and competing phytoplankton were evaluated. During the study, Aureoumbra comprised up to 98% of total phytoplankton biomass, achieved cell densities exceeding 2 × 106 cells mL−1, and contained isotopically lighter N compared to non-bloom plankton populations, potentially reflecting the use of recycled N. Consistent with this hypothesis, N-isotope experiments revealed that urea and ammonium accounted for >90% of N uptake within bloom populations whereas nitrate was a primary N source for non-bloom populations. Low levels (10 μM) of experimental ammonium enrichment during blooms frequently enhanced the growth of Aureoumbra and resulted in the growth rates of Aureoumbra exceeding those of phycoerythrin-containing, but not phycocyanin-containing, cyanobacteria. A near absence of grazing pressure on Aureoumbra further enabled this species to out-grow other phytoplankton populations. Given this alga is generally known to resist zooplankton grazing under hypersaline conditions, these findings collectively suggest that moderate loading rates of reduced forms of nitrogenous nutrients (e.g ammonium, urea) into other subtropical, hypersaline lagoons could make them susceptible to future brown tides caused by Aureoumbra.  相似文献

The long-term sustainability of seagrasses in the subtropics and tropics depends on their ability to adapt to shifts in salinity regimes, particularly in light of present increases in coastal freshwater extractions and future climate change scenarios. Although there are major concerns world-wide on increased salinity in coastal estuaries, there is little quantitative information on the specific upper salinity tolerance of tropical and subtropical seagrass species. We examined seagrass hypersalinity tolerance under two scenarios: (1) when salinity is raised rapidly simulating a pulsed event, such as exposure to brine effluent, and (2) when salinity is raised slowly, characteristic of field conditions in shallow evaporative basins; the first in hydroponics (Experiments I and II) and the second in large mesocosms using intact sediment cores from the field (Experiment III). The three tropical seagrass species investigated in this study were highly tolerant of hypersaline conditions with a slow rate of salinity increase (1 psu d−1). None of the three species elicited total shoot mortality across the range of salinities examined (35–70 psu over 30 days exposures); representing in situ exposure ranges in Florida Bay, a shallow semi-enclosed subtropical lagoon with restricted circulation. Based on stress indicators, shoot decline, growth rates, and PAM florescence, all three species were able to tolerate salinities up to 55 psu, with Thalassia testudinum (60 psu) and Halodule wrightii (65 psu) eliciting a slightly higher salinity threshold than Ruppia maritima (55 psu). However, when salinity was pulsed, without a slow osmotic adjustment period, threshold levels dropped 20 psu to approximately 45 psu for T. testudinum. While we found these three seagrass species to be highly tolerant of high salinity, and conclude that hypersalinity probably does not solely cause seagrass dieoff events in Florida Bay, high salinity can modify carbon and O2 balance in the plant, potentially affecting the long-term health of the seagrass community.  相似文献

The diel change in dissolved oxygen concentrations were recorded with an automated incubator containing a pulsed oxygen sensor in Sarasota Bay, Florida. The deployments occurred during a ‘pre-bloom’ period in May to June 2006, and during a harmful algal bloom dominated by Karenia brevis in September 2006. The diurnal (daylight) increase in dissolved oxygen concentrations varied from 16 to 104 μmol O2 l−1 with the corresponding nocturnal decrease in oxygen varying from 16 to 77 μmol O2 l−1. Nocturnal respiration consumed 42–113% of the diurnal net oxygen production with the minimum and maximum during the pre-bloom period. Hourly production rates closely followed fluctuations in irradiance with maximum rates in the late morning. Hourly oxygen utilization rates (community respiration) at night were highest during the first few hours after sunset.  相似文献

A cyanobacteria-induced black bloom in Taihu Lake, 2007, subjected nearly one million Wuxi City residents to a drinking water crisis. This black bloom attracted wide attention in China and the rest of the world. However, black bloom is a highly weather-dependent event, and its rapid movement in lakes makes it difficult to predict where it will occur. Therefore, jar-tests and simulated flow experiments were performed to investigate the flocculation, deposition, and resuspension of black-bloom-induced black matter. At a dosage of 0.2 g L−1 chitosan + 1 g L−1 diatomite, 90% of the turbidity was removed within 1 h in jar-tests and in low flow speed simulated experiments. However, the black matter/clay flocs did not fully sink, and stratification of turbidity apparently occurred in the lower part of the tank during the simulated flow experiments. The resuspension experiments under simulated flow speeds showed that at a wind speed of 1–6 m s−1 in Taihu Lake produced currents that did not greatly affect floc resuspension, but a wind speed of 3–4 m s−1 produced waves that could induce floc resuspension. Quartz sand was sprayed over the flocs to verify its effect on inhibiting resuspension. A shear stress of 0.37 N m−2 did not induce floc resuspension, which indicated that a wind speed of 6 m s−1 would not induce floc resuspension in Taihu Lake.  相似文献
