In this study, the effects of lanthanum were investigated on contents of pigments, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, antioxidative enzymes, and biomass of maize seedlings under salt stress. The results showed that salt stress significantly decreased the contents of Chl and carotenoids, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qP), and quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), net photosynthetic rate (PN), and biomass. Salt stress increased nonphotochemical quenching (qN), the activities of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide compared with control. Pretreatment with lanthanum prior to salt stress significantly enhanced the contents of Chl and carotenoids, Fv/Fm, qP, qN, ΦPSII, PN, biomass, and activities of the above antioxidant enzymes compared with the salt-stressed plants. Pretreatment with lanthanum also significantly reduced the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide induced by salt stress. Our results suggested that lanthanum can improve salt tolerance of maize seedlings by enhancing the function of photosynthetic apparatus and antioxidant capacity.  相似文献

The effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) treatment on parameters of photosynthesis and antioxidant defense system were measured in pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) leaves under low-light (LL) stress. Seedlings exposed to LL stress showed increased chlorophyll content as well as decreased net photosynthetic rate (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), maximum quantum yield of PSII (F v/F m), actual PSII photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII), electron transport rates and photochemical quenching coefficient (q p). However, almost all the photosynthetic parameters above were enhanced markedly in seedlings treated with GABA under LL stress. Moreover, LL stress increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide anion radical (O2 ·?) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. GABA-treated, LL-stressed seedlings exhibited lower MDA, O2 ·? and H2O2 production, and showed an activated antioxidant defense system, including increased activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione peroxidase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase, ascorbate and glutathione. Moreover, seedlings subjected to LL stress showed increased endogenous GABA levels, and the level was further improved by application of exogenous GABA. These results suggest that GABA mitigates the LL-induced stress via regulating the antioxidant defense system and maintaining a high level of photochemical efficiency in pepper seedlings.

Cold acclimation and photoinhibition of photosynthesis in Scots pine   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Cold acclimation of Scots pine did not affect the susceptibility of photosynthesis to photoinhibition. Cold acclimation did however cause a suppression of the rate of CO2 uptake, and at given light and temperature conditions a larger fraction of the photosystem II reaction centres were closed in cold-acclimated than in nonacclimated pine. Therefore, when assayed at the level of photosystem II reaction centres, i.e. in relation to the degree of photosystem closure, cold acclimation caused a significant increase in resistance to photoinhibition; at given levels of photosystem II closure the resistance to photoinhibition was higher after cold acclimation. This was particularly evident in measurements at 20° C. The amounts and activities of the majority of analyzed active oxygen scavengers were higher after cold acclimation. We suggest that this increase in protective enzymes and compounds, particularly Superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and ascorbate of the chloroplasts, enables Scots pine to avoid excessive photoinhibition of photosynthesis despite partial suppression of photosynthesis upon cold acclimation. An increased capacity for light-induced de-epoxidation of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin upon cold acclimation may also be of significance.Abbreviations APX ascorbate peroxidase - DHA dehydroascorbate - DHAR dehydroascorbate reductase - Fm maximal fluorescence when all reaction centres are closed - Fv/Fm maximum photochemical yield of PSII - GR glutathione reductase - GSH reduced glutathione - Je rate of photosynthetic electron transport - MDAR monodehydroascorbate reductase - qN nonphotochemical quenching of fluorescence - qP photochemical quenching of fluorescence - SOD superoxide dismutase This work was supported by the Swedish Natural Science Research Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

Light-dependent Reduction of Oxidized Glutathione by Ruptured Chloroplasts   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Crude extracts of pea shoots (Pisum sativum) catalyzed oxidized glutathione (GSSG)-dependent oxidation of NADPH which was attributed to NADPH-specific glutathione reductase. The pH optimum was 8 and the Km values for GSSG and NADPH were 23 μm and 4.9 μm, respectively. Reduced glutathione (GSH) inhibited the reaction. Crude extracts also catalyzed NADPH-dependent reduction of GSSG; the ratio of the rate of NADPH oxidized to GSH formed was 0.49. NADH and various substituted mono- and disulfides would not substitute for NADPH and GSSG respectively. Per mg of chlorophyll, enzyme activity of isolated chloroplasts was 69% of the activity of crude extracts.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to test the effects of foliar application of progesterone on the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) and photosynthetic rate in wheat flag leaves subjected to cross-stress of heat and high light during grain-filling stage. The results showed that progesterone pretreatment increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione reductase, and the contents of ascorbic acid and glutathione under the cross-stress. Meanwhile, the rate of O2 ? production, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde contents in progesterone pretreated leaves were significantly lower under heat and high light stress. In parallel with the alleviation of oxidative stress, higher content of D1 protein in PSII reactive center was observed in progesterone pretreated leaves, resulting in a significant increase in the potential (Fv/Fm) and actual (ΦPS II) photochemical efficiency of PSII, and the net photosynthetic rate. In summary, this study suggested that foliar application of progesterone might protect the PSII complex from heat and high light stress-induced damage through enhancing antioxidant defense system and further facilitating D1 protein stability in the wheat leaves.  相似文献

The protective effect of selenium (Se) on antioxidant defense and methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification systems was investigated in leaves of rapeseed (Brassica napus cv. BINA sharisha 3) seedlings under cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative stress. Two sets of 11-day-old seedlings were pretreated with both 50 and 100???M Se (Na2SeO4, sodium selenate) for 24?h. Two concentrations of CdCl2 (0.5 and 1.0?mM) were imposed separately or on the Se-pretreated seedlings, which were grown for another 48?h. Cadmium stress at any levels resulted in the substantial increase in malondialdehyde and H2O2 levels. The ascorbate (AsA) content of the seedlings decreased significantly upon exposure to Cd stress. The amount of reduced glutathione (GSH) increased only at 0.5?mM CdCl2, while glutathione disulfide (GSSG) increased at any level of Cd, with concomitant decrease in GSH/GSSG ratio. The activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) increased significantly with increased concentration of Cd (both at 0.5 and 1.0?mM CdCl2), while the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) increased only at moderate stress (0.5?mM CdCl2) and then decreased at 1.0?mM severe stress (1.0?mM CdCl2). Monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), catalase (CAT), glyoxalase I (Gly I), and glyoxalase II (Gly II) activities decreased upon exposure to any levels of Cd. Selenium pretreatment had little effect on the nonenzymatic and enzymatic components of seedlings grown under normal conditions; i.e., they slightly increased the GSH content and the activities of APX, GR, GST, and GPX. On the other hand, Se pretreatment of seedlings under Cd-induced stress showed a synergistic effect; it increased the AsA and GSH contents, the GSH/GSSG ratio, and the activities of APX, MDHAR, DHAR, GR, GPX, CAT, Gly I, and Gly II which ultimately reduced the MDA and H2O2 levels. However, in most cases, pretreatment with 50???M Se showed better results compared to pretreatment with 100???M Se. The results indicate that the exogenous application of Se at low concentrations increases the tolerance of plants to Cd-induced oxidative damage by enhancing their antioxidant defense and MG detoxification systems.  相似文献

Glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) was purified from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaves by affinity chromatography on ADP-Sepharose. The purified enzyme has a specific activity of 246 enzyme units/mg protein and is homogeneous by the criterion of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis on native and SDS-gels. The enzyme has a molecular weight of 145,000 and consists of two subunits of similar size. The pH optimum of spinach glutathione reductase is 8.5–9.0, which is related to the function it performs in the chloroplast stroma. It is specific for oxidised glutathione (GSSG) but shows a low activity with NADH as electron donor. The pH optimum for NADH-dependent GSSG reduction is lower than that for NADPH-dependent reduction. The enzyme has a low affinity for reduced glutathione (GSH) and for NADP+, but GSH-dependent NADP+ reduction is stimulated by addition of dithiothreitol. Spinach glutathione reductase is inhibited on incubation with reagents that react with thiol groups, or with heavymetal ions such as Zn2+. GSSG protects the enzyme against inhibition but NADPH does not. Pre-incubation of the enzyme with NADPH decreases its activity, so kinetic studies were performed in which the reaction was initiated by adding NADPH or enzyme. The Km for GSSG was approximately 200 M and that for NADPH was about 3 M. NADP+ inhibited the enzyme, assayed in the direction of GSSG reduction, competitively with respect to NADPH and non-competitively with respect to GSSG. In contrast, GSH inhibited non-competitively with respect to both NADPH and GSSG. Illuminated chloroplasts, or chloroplasts kept in the dark, contain equal activities of glutathione reductase. The kinetic properties of the enzyme (listed above) suggest that GSH/GSSG ratios in chloroplasts will be very high under both light and dark conditions. This prediction was confirmed experimentally. GSH or GSSG play no part in the light-induced activation of chloroplast fructose diphosphatase or NADP+-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. We suggest that GSH helps to stabilise chloroplast enzymes and may also play a role in removing H2O2. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity may be required in chloroplasts in the dark in order to provide NADPH for glutathione reductase.Abbreviations GSH reduced form of the tripeptide glutathione - GSSG oxidised form of glutathione  相似文献

Effects of the antioxidant system and chlorophyll fluorescence on drought tolerance of four common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars were studied. The cultivars were positioned in the order of a decrease in their drought tolerance: Yakutiye, Pinto Villa, Ozayse, and Zulbiye on the basis of changes in the water potential, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic pigment content, and lipid peroxidation. Under drought conditions, the level of H2O2 was not changed in cv. Pinto Villa but decreased in other cultivars. Antioxidant enzymes (superothide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR)) were generally activated in all cultivars. Interestingly, CAT, APX, and GR activities were not changed in cv. Pinto Villa, APX activity decreased in cv. Yakutiye, and CAT activity was not changed in cv. Zulbiye. The increases in SOD and GPX activities in cv. Ozayse were higher than in other cultivars. Drought stress reduced the effective quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2) and the photochemical quenching (qp), while it increased nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) in all cultivars. The reduction or increase was more pronounced in cv. Zulbiye. There were generally significant correlations between qp, NPQ, and ROS scavenging by SOD and APX. Also, there were significant correlations between SOD and qp in tolerant cultivars and APX and qp in sensitive ones. The results indicate that activation of SOD and APX was closely related to the efficiency of PS2 in common bean cultivars. This interaction was essential for protection of photosystems and plant survival under drought.  相似文献

We investigated the protective role of selenium (Se) in minimizing high temperature-induced damages to rapeseed (Brassica napus L. cv. BINA Sarisha 3) seedlings. Ten-day-old seedlings which had been supplemented with Se (25 μM Na2SeO4) or not were grown separately under control temperature (25 °C) or high temperature (38 °C) for a period of 24 or 48 h in nutrient solution. Heat stress caused decrease in chlorophyll and leaf relative water content (RWC) and increased malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), proline (Pro), and methylglyoxal (MG) contents. Ascorbate (AsA) content decreased at any duration of heat treatment. The content of reduced glutathione (GSH) increased only at 24 h of stress, while glutathione disulfide (GSSG) markedly increased at both duration of heat exposure with associated decrease in GSH/GSSG ratio. Upon heat treatment the activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glyoxalase I (Gly I) were increased, while the activities of monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), and catalase (CAT) were decreased. The activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) remained unchanged under heat stress. However, heat-treated seedlings which were supplemented with Se significantly decreased the lipid peroxidation, H2O2, and MG content and enhanced the content of chlorophyll, Pro, RWC, AsA, and GSH as well as the GSH/GSSG ratio. Selenium supplemented heat-treated seedlings also showed enhanced activities of MDHAR, DHAR, GR, GPX, CAT, Gly I, and Gly II as compared to heat-treated seedlings without Se supplementation. This study concludes that exogenous Se application confers heat stress tolerance in rapeseed seedlings by upregulating the antioxidant defense mechanism and methylglyoxal detoxification system.  相似文献

The effects of 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and antioxidant systems of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) under salt stress were investigated. Eggplant seedlings were exposed to 90?mM NaCl with four levels of 6-BA (5, 10, 20 and 50???M) for 10?days. 6-BA at lower concentrations increased chlorophyll concentration, the net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) and water use efficiency (WUE), as well as the quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (??PSII), photochemical quenching (q p), and decreased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), while higher concentrations reduced the effects or even exacerbated the occurrence of photosynthetic capacity. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) increased significantly during salt treatments, and induced the increase of the activities of these enzymes at certain concentrations of 6-BA. 6-BA also reduced significantly malonaldehyde (MDA) contents and O 2 ·? production. It was concluded that 6-BA could alleviate the detrimental effects of salt stress on plant growth by increasing photosynthetic efficiency and enhancing antioxidant enzyme systems in leaves at a proper concentration and of the varying 6-BA concentrations used, the most effective concentration for promoting growth was 10???M under saline conditions.  相似文献

Photochemical efficiency of PSII of Ctenanthe setosa was investigated to understand the photosynthetic adaptation mechanism under drought stress causing leaf rolling. Stomatal conductance (g s), the levels of photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters were determined in leaves that had four different visual leaf rolling scores from 1 to 4, opened after re-watering and mechanically opened at score 4. g s value gradually decreased in adaxial and abaxial surfaces in relation to scores of leaf rolling. Pigment contents decreased until score 3 but approached score 1 level at score 4. No significant variations in effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII), and photochemical quenching (qp) were found until score 3, while they significantly decreased at score 4. Non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) increased at score 2 but then decreased. After re-watering, the Chl fluorescence and other physiological parameters reached to approximately score 1 value, again. As for mechanically opened leaves, g s decreased during drought period. The decrease in adaxial surface was higher than that of the rolled leaves. NPQ was higher than that of the rolled leaves. ΦPSII and qp significantly declined and the decreases were more than those of the rolled leaves. In conclusion, the results indicate that leaf rolling protects PSII functionality from damage induced by drought stress.  相似文献

A newly developed nitrogen laser fluorimeter insensitive to actinic illumination was used to follow simultaneously the light induced changes in red and blue fluorescence of intact isolated spinach chloroplasts and leaf pieces. The recorded variable blue fluorescence was linked to a water soluble component of intact isolated chloroplasts, depended on Photosystem I, and was related to changes in carbon metabolism. From the comparison of changes in intact and broken chloroplasts and from fluorescence spectra under different conditions, it was concluded that the variation in NADPH was the major cause for the changes in blue fluorescence. This study opens a path towards continuous and non-destructive monitoring of NADPH redox state in chloroplasts and leaves.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - DHAP dihydroxyacetone phosphate - DLGA DL-glyceraldehyde - FNR ferredoxin-NADP reductase - FWHM full width at half maximum - LED light emitting diodes - OAA oxaloacetate - qN non-photochemical quenching - PGA 3-phosphoglycerate - Pi inorganic orthophosphate - qP photochemical quenching - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - QA primary quinone acceptor of Photosystem II Preliminary results of this work were presented at the First Conference on the Physiology and Biochemistry of high Mountain Plants, 2–3 July 1992, Villar d'Arene, France.  相似文献

Glutaredoxins (Grxs) are short, cysteine-rich glutathione (GSH)-mediated oxidoreductases. In this study, a chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) glutaredoxin [LOC101493651 (CaGrx)] gene has been selected based on screening experiments with two contrasting varieties of chickpea, PUSA-362 (drought-tolerant) and ICC-1882 (drought-sensitive) under drought and salinity. The tolerant variety showed higher CaGrx gene expression, as compared to less in the sensitive variety, under both the stresses. The CaGrx gene was then over-expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana and were exposed to drought and salinity. The over-expression of CaGrx elevated the activity of glutaredoxin, which induced antioxidant enzymes (glutathione reductase; GR, glutathione peroxidase; GPX, catalase; CAT, ascorbate peroxidase; APX, glutathione-S-transferase; GST, superoxide dismutase; SOD, monodehydroascorbate reductase; MDHAR, and dehydroascorbate reductase; DHAR), antioxidants (GSH and ascorbate) and stress-responsive amino acids (cysteine and proline). Enhancement in the antioxidant defense system possibly administered tolerance in transgenics against both stresses. CaGrx reduced stress markers (H2O2, TBARS, and electrolyte leakage) and enhanced root growth, seed germination, and survival against both stresses. The physiological parameters (net photosynthesis; PN, water use efficiency; WUE, stomatal conductance; gs, transpiration; E, electron transport rate; ETR, and photochemical quenching; qP), chlorophylls and carotenoids, were improved in the transgenics during both stresses, that maintained the photosynthetic apparatus and protected the plants from damage. The enhanced activity of the cysteine biosynthesis enzyme, o-acetylserine (thiol) lyase (OAS-TL), increased the cysteine level in the transgenics, which elevated glutathione biosynthesis to maintain the ascorbate–glutathione cycle under both stresses. This investigation verified that the CaGrx gene provides tolerance against salinity and drought, maintaining physiological and morphological performances, and could be exploited for genetic engineering approaches to overcome both the stresses in various crops.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12298-021-00999-z.  相似文献

The effect of short-term drought stress on the water content, antioxidant system and photosynthetic characteristics was investigated using cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings. The results indicated that polyethylene glycol induced water stress reduced water content in shoots of cucumber seedling after treatment of 36 hours, and caused obvious reductions in net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration and transpiration of leaves. In addition, water stress significantly reduced the photosynthetic pigment content and inhibited photochemical activity, including actual photochemical efficiency, maximal quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry and coefficient for photochemical quenching. Meanwhile non-photochemical quenching increased. As responses to drought stress, significant increases in electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide levels were detected in leaves. The superoxide dismutases, catalase, glutathione reductase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities, protein, ascorbate and glutathione content, all decreased and peroxidases activity increased, while ascorbate peroxidase and monodehydroascorbate reductase activities exhibited different trend under different degree of water stress. Therefore, it can be concluded that water stress strongly disrupted the normal metabolism of leaves and restrained water absorption.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to elucidate whether exogenous spermidine (Spd) protection of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings under salinity-alkalinity stress is associated with antioxidant enzymes in the chloroplast. The effects of exogenous Spd on antioxidant enzyme activity and antioxidant content in the chloroplast were evaluated in seedlings of salt-sensitive ecotype (Zhongza 9) grown in a 75 mM salinity-alkalinity solution, with or without 0.25 mM Spd foliar spraying. Results showed that salinity-alkalinity stress increased MDA content, superoxide anion O2?- generation rate, superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) activities and ratio of AsA/DHA and reduced contents of ascorbate (AsA), dehydroascorbate (DHA), AsA+DHA, glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), GSH+GSSG, dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) activity and ratio of GSH/GSSG in chloroplasts. The exogenous Spd application combined with salinity-alkalinity stress decreased the O2?- generation rate and MDA content compared to salinity-alkalinity stress alone. The exogenous Spd also increased AsA-GSH cycle components and increased all antioxidant enzyme activities in most cases. Therefore, exogenous Spd alleviates salinity-alkalinity stress damage using antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic systems in chloroplasts.  相似文献

Pea plants were exposed to 0, 20, 50, and 100 µM chromium [Cr(VI)] to investigate oxidative stress in isolated chloroplasts. Leaf area and biomass accumulation were significantly reduced at higher Cr supply. Generation of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and ·OH radical generation was enhanced in the chloroplasts isolated from Cr-exposed pea plants. Cr(VI) significantly reduced F v/F m ratio of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, Chl content, and whole chain electron transport rate. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased at lower Cr supply while it decreased at higher Cr supply. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) was found to be most sensitive to Cr stress. Monodehydroascorbate reductase activity remained higher at 20 and 50 µM Cr but decreased at 100 µM Cr. Increased activities of dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and glutathione reductase (GR) in the isolated chloroplasts were observed during the initial 3 days of Cr exposure of pea plants. Activities of DHAR and GR were increased up to day 3 only. Ascorbate and glutathione (GSH) pools showed similar decrease that was more evident in the GSH pool as the duration of Cr treatment increased. Observed changes in reactive oxygen species concentration, photosynthetic characteristics, and antioxidant system indicate that chloroplasts in Cr-exposed pea plants are an important target of oxidative stress.  相似文献

In order to observe the possible regulatory role of selenium (Se) in relation to the changes in ascorbate (AsA) glutathione (GSH) levels and to the activities of antioxidant and glyoxalase pathway enzymes, rapeseed (Brassica napus) seedlings were grown in Petri dishes. A set of 10-day-old seedlings was pretreated with 25 μM Se (Sodium selenate) for 48 h. Two levels of drought stress (10% and 20% PEG) were imposed separately as well as on Se-pretreated seedlings, which were grown for another 48 h. Drought stress, at any level, caused a significant increase in GSH and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) content; however, the AsA content increased only under mild stress. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) was not affected by drought stress. The monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) and glutathione reductase (GR) activity increased only under mild stress (10% PEG). The activity of dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and glyoxalase I (Gly I) activity significantly increased under any level of drought stress, while catalase (CAT) and glyoxalase II (Gly II) activity decreased. A sharp increase in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and lipid peroxidation (MDA content) was induced by drought stress. On the other hand, Se-pretreated seedlings exposed to drought stress showed a rise in AsA and GSH content, maintained a high GSH/GSSG ratio, and evidenced increased activities of APX, DHAR, MDHAR, GR, GST, GPX, CAT, Gly I, and Gly II as compared with the drought-stressed plants without Se. These seedlings showed a concomitant decrease in GSSG content, H2O2, and the level of lipid peroxidation. The results indicate that the exogenous application of Se increased the tolerance of the plants to drought-induced oxidative damage by enhancing their antioxidant defense and methylglyoxal detoxification systems.
