Remnants of Bushmen cave paintings showing representations of dinosaurs evidently reconstructed from footprints, trackways and skeletal remains have been found in Lesotho. This is a region of prolific dinosaur trackways preserved in Lower Jurassic sedimentary rocks, and the Bushman culture is renowned for extraordinary skill in the tracking of modern animals. It is probable that the track and trackmaker representations depict ornithopod dinosaurs. The track drawings are accurate, and the trackmaker representations show that Bushman artists anticipated modern reconstructions of bipedal dinosaurs and produced depictions that are more realistic than many paleontological reconstructions that endured until quite recently.

Abstract:  New findings of dinosaur footprints are described from the Upper Jurassic Iouaridène ichnosite of Morocco. On the top of two surfaces, stratigraphically close to that bearing the famous Breviparopus taghbaloutensis trackways, two footprints were excavated and assigned to the ichnogenus Deltapodus . This ichnogenus is well known from the Middle Jurassic of Yorkshire and also occurs in Upper Jurassic deposits from Iberia and the United States. This finding represents the first record of Deltapodus from Africa. These footprints, probably produced by stegosaurian dinosaurs, add new data on the distribution of this type of dinosaur and on the connection between the northern and southern margin of Tethys. 3D models have been generated to allow more detailed studies and to record these unique footprints.

Were some dinosaurs gregarious?
A careful survey of the dinosaur footprints and trackways (identified as Eubrontes, Anchisauripus and Grallator) at the Mt. Tom site north of Holyoke, Massachusetts, and plots of their orientations reveal that an improbable percentage (70%) of the tracks are oriented in a nearparallel course. All but one of these coincident ancient traverses were probably made by the same kind of Triassic dinosaur (the footprints of which are referred to as Eubrontes). Comparable trackway orientation patterns have been reported by Albritton (1942) near Comanche, Texas for an Early Cretaceous dinosaur (iguanodobntid?) and Bird (1941, 1944) cited paralled sauporod trackways of Early Cretaceous age near the Paluxy River in Texas. Probability dictates that these sub-parallel traverses were not independent events and the presence of other deviating trackways at all three sites indicates that the trackmakers probably were not confined in their passage by physical barriers. Furthermore, the coincidental occurrence of such natural barriers at all of the sites mentioned here seems highly improbable. the combinedevidence of the Massachusetts site and the two Texas localities, together with the apparently widespread occurrence of dinosaur trackway lineation, strongly indicates gregarious habits for several different kinds of dinosaurs.

An isolated, large recurved and finely serrated tooth found associated with the prosauropodEuskelosaurus from the Late Triassic part of the Elliot Formation is described here. It is compared to the Triassic thecodonts and carnivorous dinosaurs and its possible affinity is discussed. The tooth possibly belongs to a basal theropod and shows some features similar to the allosauroids. This tooth is of significance, as dinosaur remains except for some footprints and trackways, are poorly known in the Late Triassic horizons of southern Africa.

New dinosaur tracks have been found near Bisceglie (Bari, Apulia), on loose blocks ascribed to the Corato Member (late Bedoulian to early Gargasian) of the Calcare di Bari Fm. The material consists of isolated footprints as well as of short trackways of quadrupedal and bipedal dinosaurs. The new tracksite has yielded a quite differentiated dinosaur ichnocoenosis, including theropod, sauropod, thyreophoran and ornithopod footprints. The discovery of early Aptian dinosaur footprints in the limestone of the carbonate platform of southern Italy gives new insights on dinosaur distribution, and new palaeontological constraints for the palaeogeographic reconstruction of the Mediterranean Tethys during the Cretaceous. The analysis of this and others ichnosites of the periadriatic carbonate platforms, gives evidence of repeated emersions and of widespread land-vertebrates dwelling. The characteristics of the associations suggest that the trackmakers did not constitute a real coevolved association but the occasional co-occurrence of taxa after migration. The results emphasize the need of both structural and environmental continuity and walking ways between a southern continent and the periadriatic carbonate platforms during the Early Cretaceous.

The Los Cayos dinosaur tracksite is located at the eastern sector of the Cameros Basin (Cornago Township, La Rioja province), NE Spain. The sediments consist of interbedded terrigenous siliciclastics and carbonates belonging to the Enciso Group (Early Cretaceous, Aptian in age). The sedimentological and faunal evidence suggests that these sediments were deposited in a low gradient lacustrine environment. Los Cayos constitutes a relatively wide area with at least 6 localities that have yielded dinosaur tracks. More than 2,000 dinosaur tracks have been discovered to date. Medium to large theropod dinosaurs constitute about 95% of the ichnofauna. Ornithopod dinosaur tracks have been reported from only one of the outcrops (Los Cayos D). Los Cayos S has yielded theropod and sauropod tracks. One sauropod trackway shows a narrow-gauge locomotion pattern and a manus print morphology suggesting that the trackmaker was a titanosaurid, or at least a titanosauriform sauropod. Some pterosaur manus impressions, avian-like footprints of small size and possible turtle tracks complete the assemblage of one of the most impressive and best-preserved dinosaur tracksites of the European Lower Cretaceous.

Ardley Quarry, Oxfordshire, central England, preserves a most remarkable ichnological record of dinosaur activity on a single 168 Ma old trackway-bearing horizon. This horizon reveals over 40 dinosaur trackways, most of them sauropod, but including several giant theropod trackways tentatively attributed to Megalosaurus, the first creature of its kind recognized and assigned to Dinosauria. A 60 meter-long portion of one theropod trackway (no. 80) is systematically characterized in terms of pitch, yaw, and roll of successive footprints. Variations among these parameters correspond closely with acceleration/deceleration intervals in the trackway, impressed by the animal in wet calcareous mud within the tidewater zone of a mid-Jurassic coastal plain. Energy expended (1.4 watts) by the animal in making each footprint in the trackway is comparable to the resting metabolic rate of modern birds and mammals. Efforts by the theropod to accelerate are reflected by intervals of forward pitch of footprints; here the backward component of the force exerted upon the ground exceeds the forward component. Conversely, during braking (deceleration) intervals, footprints tend to exhibit a backward pitch in which the forward component of the force will have exceeded the backward component. Maximum positive yaw (outward from the midline of the trackway) generally corresponds with forward pitch. Positive yaw is greatest where positive (outward) roll is maximum. Measurements of pitch, yaw, and roll of dinosaur footprints hold potential for revealing fundamental locomotor characteristics of dinosaurs and for estimating acceleration and speed of an animal from its footprint record.

Background

The evolutionary history of Mesozoic terrestrial vertebrates from the Arabian Peninsula is virtually unknown. Despite vast exposures of rocky outcrops, only a handful of fossils have yet been described from the region. Here we report a multi-taxon dinosaur track assemblage near Madar village, 47 km north of Sana''a, Republic of Yemen. This represents the first dinosaur tracksite from the Arabian Peninsula, and the only multi-taxon dinosaur ichnosite in the Middle East.

Methodology/Findings

Measurements were taken directly from trackway impressions, following standard ichnological conventions. The presence of bipedal trackmakers is evidenced by a long series of pes imprints preserving smoothly rounded posterior margins, no evidence of a hallux, bluntly rounded digit tips and digital divarication angles characteristic of ornithopod dinosaurs. Nearby, eleven parallel quadrupedal trackways document a sauropod herd that included large and small individuals traveling together. Based on the morphology of manus impressions along with a narrow-gauged stance, the quadrupedal trackways were made by non-titanosauriform neosauropods. Additional isolated tracks and trackways of sauropod and ornithopod dinosaurs are preserved nearby.

Conclusions/Significance

Taken together, these discoveries present the most evocative window to date into the evolutionary history of dinosaurs of the Arabian Peninsula. Given the limited Mesozoic terrestrial record from the region, this discovery is of both temporal and geographic significance, and massive exposures of similarly-aged outcrops nearby offer great promise for future discoveries.

Mechanics of posture and gait of some large dinosaurs
Dimensions of dinosaur bones and of models of dinosaurs have been used as the basis for calculations designed to throw light on the posture and gaits of dinosaurs.
Estimates of the masses of some dinosaurs, obtained from the volumes of models, are compared with previous estimates. The positions of dinosaurs' centres of mass, derived from models, show that some large quadrupedal dinosaurs supported most of their weight on their hind legs and were probably capable of rearing up on their hind legs.
Distributions of bending moments along the backs of large dinosaurs are derived from measurements on models. The tensions required in epaxial muscles to enable Diplodocus to stand are calculated. It is likely that the long neck of this dinosaur was supported by some structure running through the notches in the neural spines of its cervical and dorsal vertebrae. The nature of this hypothetical structure is discussed.
An attempt is made to reconstruct the walking gait of sauropod dinosaurs, from the pattern of footprints in fossil tracks.
The dimensions of dinosaur leg bones are compared to predictions for mammals of equal body mass, obtained by extrapolation of allometric equations. Their dimensions are also used to calculate a quantity which is used as an indicator of strength in bending. Comparisons with values for modern animals lead to speculations about the athletic performance of dinosaurs.
Estimates of pressures exerted on the ground by the feet of dinosaurs are used in a discussion of the ability of dinosaurs to walk over soft ground.
