Myofibrillar ATPase activity was measured in the epaxial musculature of five freshwater species of fish acclimated to extremes of temperature within their tolerance ranges. Changes in the enzyme activity were apparent in carp, tench and roach, cold acclimated fish (10°C) having higher enzyme activity levels than hot acclimated fish (28°C). Such changes were not apparent in eels or brook trout. Alteration of the enzyme activity took less than 4 weeks, and was totally reversible. This suggests that seasonal adaptation to environmental temperatures is possible, thus maintaining locomotory efficiency.  相似文献

Success of stream restoration can be difficult to define because many interacting abiotic and biotic factors across spatio-temporal scales can have measurable effects. Consequently, failure in habitat restoration to achieve targeted biological goals may reflect interactions of habitat restoration with unaccounted risks that have yet to be addressed on the landscape. This is particularly true within invaded landscapes, where habitat restoration can benefit non-native competitors as much as the native fishes for which restoration is designed. We tested for interacting effects of a reach scale habitat restoration effort and non-native trout competition on habitat use by a brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) metapopulation within a productive main stem corridor of the Shavers Fork watershed, West Virginia. We used a joint species occupancy model within a BACI sampling design to show that brook trout occupancy of main stem habitat was highest post-restoration within restored sampling reaches, but this benefit to native brook trout was conditional on brown trout (Salmo trutta) not being present within the main stem habitat. Collectively these results indicate that habitat restoration was only beneficial for native brook trout when non-native trout were absent from the restored sampling area. Proactive approaches to restoration will be integral for supporting resilient ecosystems in response to future anthropogenic threats (e.g. climate change), and we have shown that such actions will only be successful if non-native competitors do not also benefit from the restoration actions.  相似文献

Juvenile bull trout Salvelinus confluentus from two geographically and ecologically distinct populations were compared with regard to their ability to compete with non-native brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis in an artificial stream, and with respect to their rates of oxygen consumption. Bull trout collected from a migratory population foraged more successfully against brook trout competitors than those from a resident population, capturing more of a limited amount of food items presented. The migratory population was also more aggressive (measured by the number of nips, chases and lateral threat displays) against brook trout competitors than the resident population. Bull trout from the migratory population had a higher oxygen consumption rate (203 mg O2 kg · hr-1) in the field than similar sized fish from the resident population (183 mg O2 kg · hr-1). These results suggest native bull trout have population-level variation in competitive ability against a non-native species and such competitive ability is positively associated with metabolism and migratory life history.  相似文献

An invasive species is defined as an alien (or introduced or non-native) species whose establishment and spread threaten ecosystems, habitats or species with harm. Such threats to UK lake fish communities have long been appreciated and this review assembles case histories, including new data, from the largest lakes of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England to examine the hypothesis that at least some of these introductions have become invasive. Loch Lomond in Scotland has experienced six introductions [chub (Leuciscus cephalus), common bream (Abramis brama), crucian carp (Carassius carassius), dace (Leuciscus leuciscus), gudgeon (Gobio gobio) and ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus)], of which the most significant has been that of the percid ruffe, which has been implicated in a recent decline of the native coregonid whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). In Northern Ireland, the introduction of the cyprinid roach (Rutilus rutilus) to Lough Neagh has apparently had a negative impact on some overwintering waterfowl, although the native coregonid pollan (Coregonus autumnalis) remains abundant. Llyn Tegid in Wales has received three introductions [rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), ruffe and silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna)], although no impacts on the native whitefish or other fish populations have been observed. In England, individuals of at least 12 native and non-native fish species have been brought to Windermere for the purpose of live-baiting, although only those of the cyprinids roach and common bream have established abundant populations. At the same time, the native salmonid Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) has declined markedly while the native esocid pike (Esox lucius) has shown changes in abundance, distribution and individual condition, although these developments have not been shown to be causally linked. None of these introductions were sanctioned by appropriate fisheries or other regulatory bodies and almost all of them probably arose from the release or escape of live-bait used by pike anglers. Of the 10 species introductions documented here, four (common bream, gudgeon, roach and ruffe) have established abundant populations and two of these (roach and ruffe) have apparently caused or currently threaten harm, supporting the hypothesis that at least some of these introductions have become invasive.  相似文献

Isoenzyme patterns and the polymorphism of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were investigated in 3 fish species of family Cyprinidae, i.e. tench (Tinca tinca), crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and carp (Cyprinus carpio). The isoenzyme patterns were tissue and species specific. In crucian carp subunits with different electrophoretic mobility are present, which are genetically controlled from the B1, B2, A1, A2 and C loci, while the set of loci in carp is B1, B2, A, C1 and C2 and in tench B, A, C. The locus B of LDH in tench, the locus B2 in crucian carp, and the loci B1, C1 and C2 in carp are polymorphic and have two different alleles in each case. The polymorphism did not affect the total LDH activity in the tissues. All the populations investigated were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The genetic control of the polymorphism in B1 and C1 loci in carp was proved by test matings. The polymorphism in B loci tested in erythrocytes may be utilized as genetic markers in the fish breeding.  相似文献

Using the electrofishing database of the French National Agency for Water and Aquatic Environment (Onema), the time trends of 48 freshwater fish taxa at 590 sites monitored for at least 8 years from 1990 to 2009 were investigated. The results demonstrated that species richness increased steadily from the beginning of the monitoring period. This is congruent with the finding that the number of species displaying a significant increase in spatial distribution or abundance was greater than those showing a significant decrease. Some species, however, had declined both in occurrence and abundance, e.g. tench Tinca tinca, common bream Abramis brama, brown trout Salmo trutta and European eel Anguilla anguilla. The species showing the most spectacular colonization were non-native, e.g. topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva, wels catfish Silurus glanis and asp Aspius aspius. The time trends in population density were related to the maximal body size, habitat requirement, occurrence and abundance and the status (i.e. native or exotic) but not to the spawning temperature.  相似文献

The mucus layer on the surface of fish consists of several antimicrobial agents that provide a first line of defense against invading pathogens. To date, little is known about the antimicrobial properties of the mucus of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), brook trout (S. fontinalis), koi carp (Cyprinus carpio sub sp. koi), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). The epidermal mucus samples from these fish were extracted with acidic, organic and aqueous solvents to identify potential antimicrobial agents including basic peptides, secondary metabolites, aqueous and acid soluble compounds. Initial screening of the mucus extracts against a susceptible strain of Salmonella enterica C610, showed a significant variation in antimicrobial activity among the fish species examined. The acidic mucus extracts of brook trout, haddock and hagfish exhibited bactericidal activity. The organic mucus extracts of brook trout, striped bass and koi carp showed bacteriostatic activity. There was no detectable activity in the aqueous mucus extracts. Further investigations of the activity of the acidic mucus extracts of brook trout, haddock and hagfish showed that these fish species had specific activity for fish and human pathogens, demonstrating the role of fish mucus in antimicrobial protection. In comparison to brook trout and haddock, the minimum bactericidal concentrations of hagfish acidic mucus extracts were found to be approximately 1.5 to 3.0 times lower against fish pathogens and approximately 1.6 to 6.6 folds lower for human pathogens. This preliminary information suggests that the mucus from these fish species may be a source of novel antimicrobial agents for fish and human health related applications.  相似文献

Vertebrate populations at the periphery of their range can show pronounced genetic drift and isolation, and therefore offer unique challenges for conservation and management. These populations are often candidates for management actions such as translocations that are designed to improve demographic and genetic integrity. This is particularly true of coldwater species like brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), whose numbers have declined greatly across its historic range. At the southern margin, remnant wild populations persist in isolated headwater streams, and many have a history of receiving translocated individuals through either stocking of hatchery reared fish, relocation of wild fish, or both during restoration attempts. To determine current genetic integrity and resolve the genetic effects of past management actions for brook trout populations in SC, USA, we genetically assessed all 18 documented remaining brook trout populations along with individuals acquired from six hatcheries with recorded stocking events in SC. Our results indicated that six of the 18 streams showed signs of hatchery admixture (range 57–97%) and restored patches retained genetic signatures from multiple source populations. Populations had among the lowest genetic diversity (min average HE?=?0.147) and effective number of breeders (mean Nb?=?31.2) estimates observed throughout the native brook trout range. Populations were highly differentiated (mean pair-wise FST?=?0.396), and substantial genetic divergence was evident across major river drainages (max pair-wise FST?=?0.773). The lowest local genetic diversity and highest genetic differentiation ever reported for this species make its conservation a challenging task, particularly when combined with other threats such as climate change and non-native species. We offer recommendations on managing peripheral populations with depleted genetic characteristics and provide a reference for determining which existing populations will best serve as sources for future translocation efforts aimed at enhancing or restoring wild brook trout genetic integrity.  相似文献

We examined the introduction history of non-native freshwater fish in Okinawa-jima Island, Japan, to identify the pathway posing the greater risk for future invasions and to measure the strength of ornamental fish introductions as a vector of new invasions using all available records of freshwater fish introductions to date. At least 45 non-native freshwater fish have been introduced to Okinawa-jima Island. Of those, 22 species have successfully established in natural waters and, consequently, non-native fish species represent 76 % of the total freshwater fish fauna. The most important pathway was via the dumping of unwanted ornamental aquarium fish, which accounted for 71 % of the total introductions. The introduction of ornamental fish has occurred extensively in recent decades, and all fish introduced since the 1980s have been ornamental aquarium fish. The overall rate of establishment success was estimated at 51 %, although this is undoubtedly an overestimate because of unreported failed introductions. Establishment rates varied between stocked fish (100 %) and dumped ornamental fish (39 %), which may reflect the low propagule pressure of ornamental fish. From the observed trends in freshwater fish introductions, the dumping of ornamental fish into natural waters is expected to continue if no action is taken to reduce this most important pathway. We recommend regulations against the release of unwanted pet fish into natural waters, better programs for returning unwanted pet fish to stores or local zoos, educational programs for aquarists and retailers, and regulations against selling and trading ornamental fish that are judged to pose a high risk of causing economic or ecological harm.  相似文献

In many North American rivers, populations of multiple species of non-native cyprinid fishes are present, including black carp (Mylpharyngodon piceus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and goldfish (Carassius auratus). All six of these species are found in the Mississippi River basin and tracking their invasion has proven difficult, particularly where abundance is low. Knowledge of the location of the invasion front is valuable to natural resource managers because future ecological and economic damages can be most effectively prevented when populations are low. To test the accuracy of environmental DNA (eDNA) as an early indicator of species occurrence and relative abundance, we applied eDNA technology to the six non-native cyprinid species putatively present in a 2.6 river mile stretch of the Chicago (IL, USA) canal system that was subsequently treated with piscicide. The proportion of water samples yielding positive detections increased with relative abundance of the six species, as indicated by the number of carcasses recovered after poisoning. New markers for black carp, grass carp, and a common carp/goldfish are reported and details of the marker testing to ensure specificity are provided.  相似文献

Summary The correspondence between increased numbers of both chromosomal and nuclear NORs and artificially induced triploidy in three fish species (rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss; common carp, Cyprinus carpio; and tench, Tinea tinea) has been confirmed by CMA3 fluorescence and Ag-staining. The frequencies of cell nuclei with one, two and three active NORs, as revealed by Ag-staining, has been analyzed statistically to find the minimum cell number which verifies the increased ploidy level. A minimum sample size of about 80 cells exhibiting three active NORs is sufficient to confirm triploidy in all three species and may be of use for categorising other ploidy-manipulated fish species.  相似文献

Hybridization with introduced species represents a serious threat to the persistence of many native fish populations. Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) have been introduced extensively throughout the native range of bull trout (S. confluentus) and hybridization has been documented in several systems where they co-exist and is seen as a significant threat to the persistence of bull trout populations. We identified a group of diagnostic microsatellite loci to differentiate bull trout and brook trout and then used these loci to examine the spatial distribution of hybrids in the Malheur River basin, Oregon USA. In random samples of approximately 100 fish from each of three creeks we identified 181 brook trout, 112 bull trout and 14 hybrids. Although bull trout, brook trout and hybrids were found in all three creeks, they were not evenly distributed; brook trout were primarily found in the lower sections of the creeks, bull trout further upstream, and hybrids in the areas of the greatest overlap. One creek with a population of brook trout in a headwater lake provided an exception to this pattern; brook trout were found distributed throughout the creek downstream of the lake. Several post-F1 hybrids were identified suggesting that hybrids are reproducing in the Malher River Basin. Mitochondrial DNA analysis indicated that both female bull trout and brook trout are involved in hybridization events. Analysis of population structure suggested that brook trout have established multiple spawning populations within the Malheur system. Data presented in this study suggest that relative abundance of brook trout and habitat quality are important factors to consider when evaluating the threat of hybridization to bull trout populations.  相似文献

Fish epidermal mucus and its components provide the first line of defense against pathogens. Little is known about the role of epidermal mucus enzymes in the innate immune system of fish species such as Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), brook trout (S. fontinalis), koi carp(Cyprinus carpio), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), haddock, (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and hagfish (Myxine glutinosa). The epidermal mucus samples from these fish were analysed for the specific activities of various hydrolytic enzymes including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase, cathepsin B and proteases and the enzyme levels were compared among the fish species. Of all the species hagfish mucus showed a high activity for lysozyme and proteases and koi carp mucus had the highest levels of alkaline phosphatase and cathepsin B. A wide variation in enzyme activities was observed among the seven species and also between species of same family such as Arctic char and brook trout (salmonidae), haddock and cod (gadidae). Only lysozyme levels showed a marked variation with salinity where seawater fish showed approximately two times higher lysozyme activity than freshwater-reared fish species. Characterization of proteases with specific inhibitors showed Arctic char, brook trout, haddock and cod having higher levels of serine over metalloproteases whereas koi carp and striped bass had higher levels of metalloproteases over serine proteases. In contrast, hagfish had almost equal proportion of both serine and metalloproteases. This study demonstrates variation in the level of hydrolytic enzymes in the epidermal mucus of fish. These results provide preliminary information for a better understanding of the role of epidermal mucus and its components in the fish innate immune system.  相似文献

Mediterranean-climate regions (med-regions) are global hotspots of endemism facing mounting environmental threats associated with human-related activities, including the ecological impacts associated with non-native species introductions. We review freshwater fish introductions across med-regions to evaluate the influences of non-native fishes on the biogeography of taxonomic and functional diversity. Our synthesis revealed that 136 freshwater fish species (26 families, 13 orders) have been introduced into med-regions globally. These introductions, and local extirpations, have increased taxonomic and functional faunal similarity among regions by an average of 7.5% (4.6–11.4%; Jaccard) and 7.2% (1.4–14.0%; Bray–Curtis), respectively. Faunal homogenisation was highest in Chile and the western Med Basin, whereas sw Cape and the Aegean Sea drainages showed slight differentiation (decrease in faunal similarity) over time. At present, fish faunas of different med-regions have widespread species in common (e.g. Gambusia holbrooki, Cyprinus carpio, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Carassius auratus, and Micropterus salmoides) which are typically large-bodied, non-migratory, have higher physiological tolerance, and display fast population growth rates. Our findings suggest that intentional and accidental introductions of freshwater fish have dissolved dispersal barriers and significantly changed the present-day biogeography of med-regions across the globe. Conservation challenges in med-regions include understanding the ecosystem consequences of non-native species introductions at macro-ecological scales.  相似文献

Tench is produced in pond aquaculture in Europe and is highly valued by consumers. However, little is known about the product quality of this species, including body composition and flesh quality which are relevant for processing, storage and marketing. The experimental investigations indicate that tench are favorable in several parameters of body composition, e.g. carcass yield and fillet percentage, when compared with common carp. Organ weights show a trend toward a lower percentage than in other cyprinids. Composition of the tench fillets is similar to that of common carp. However, tench are able to store large amounts of fat on the fillet surface and intramuscularly, significantly affecting the sensorial characteristics. Technological parameters indicate that tench fillet is quite favorable for processing. In most of the samples analyzed, the water‐binding capacity of raw muscle was significantly better than in other species. Owing to a high energy content in tench muscle, the post‐mortem decrease in pH is very pronounced, which may lead to a rapid autolytic degradation of the tissue. When compared with common carp, tench fillets were favorable in terms of appearance due to a lighter flesh. Large variations in several product quality parameters reflect differences in fish size, age, sex, feeding, and genetic origin.  相似文献

Changes in water clarity (secchi disc transparency) in relation to the presence/absence of introduced, exotic fish, including rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), tench (Tinca tinca), perch (Perca fluviatilis), brown bullhead catfish (Ameiurus nebulosus), goldfish (Carassius auratus), and koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) were determined for 49 small, North Island, New Zealand lakes. There was a negative association between water clarity and the presence of exotic fish independent of lake depth. Moreover, a ‘before-and-after’ comparison and examination of case-studies indicated that introductions of exotic fish reduce water clarity. The number of species introduced affected the relationship between lake depth and water clarity but the specific role of each species could not be distinguished because most of the lakes (83%) contained more than one exotic fish species. A model incorporating the known mechanisms by which planktivorous, benthivorous and herbivorous fish can influence water clarity in lakes showed that control over just one species or feeding guild may not result in an improvement in water clarity because of the additive and synergistic effects of different species on lake trophic processes. In previous studies of nuclear transplantation, most cloned animals were obtained by intraspecies nuclear transfer and are phenotypically identical to their nuclear donors; furthermore, there was no further report on successful fish cloning since the report of cloned zebrafish. Here we report the production of seven cross-genus cloned fish by transferring nuclei from transgenic common carp into enucleated eggs of goldfish. Nuclear genomes of the cloned fish were exclusively derived from the nuclear donor species, common carp, whereas the mitochondrial DNA from the donor carp gradually disappeared during the development of nuclear transfer (NT) embryos. The somite development process and somite number of nuclear transplants were consistent with the recipient species, goldfish, rather than the nuclear donor species, common carp. This resulted in a long-lasting effect on the vertebral numbers of the cloned fish, which belonged to the range of goldfish. These demonstrate that fish egg cytoplasm not only can support the development driven by transplanted nuclei from a distantly related species at the genus scale but also can modulate development of the nuclear transplants.  相似文献

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have been widely introduced outside their respective ranges within North America causing declines and displacement of native trout. Yet, successful coexistence of native and non-native trout has received little attention. Here we evaluated the effect of introduced brook trout on the size and density of native redband trout in two invaded sub-basins in southeastern Oregon. In a multi-year study, we investigated whether habitat and fish communities differed between streams and stream reaches where redband trout were allopatric versus where redband trout were sympatric with brook trout. We hypothesized that redband trout would be less dense and have smaller total length in sympatry with brook trout than in allopatry, but that total trout density would not differ. We investigated whether differences in habitat existed between sympatric and allopatric locations that would indicate differentiation in site level habitat preferences for each trout species. We found that sympatric locations had more wood but similar fish community structure. Mean length and densities of redband trout were higher at allopatric locations. However, in most years at sympatric locations total trout density was twice that of allopatric redband trout sites. Using comparable data from an eastern United States system where brook trout are native, sympatric sites had lower densities of brook trout; however, total trout density did not differ. We conclude that invading trout negatively impact native trout densities; but in southeastern Oregon system the negative impact is minimized.  相似文献

Using gelatin-SDS-PAGE, proteolytic activity was found in the seminal plasma of 10 teleosts: common carp Cyprinus carpio , bream Abramis brama , ide Leuciscus idus , chub Leuciscus cephalus , rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , grayling Thymallus thymallus , perch Perca fluviatilis , pike Esox lucius , goldfish Carassius carassius and pikeperch Stizostendion lucioperca . This activity was also measured, using azoalbumin as a substrate, in the seminal plasma of these species, with exception of pikeperch and goldfish. When azoalbumin-hydrolysing activity was expressed per volume, it was highest in common carp. Otherwise, as expressed per g of protein, the activity was highest in pike. The lowest proteolytic activity (expressed per g and volume) was observed in perch seminal plasma. Using gelatin containing polyacrylamide gels for detecting gelatinolytic activity, species-specific electrophoretic profiles were found. For all cyprinids two similar bands with a molecular mass of 68 and 74 kDa were found. The seminal plasma of grayling and rainbow trout showed similarities in the 41 kDa band. Perch and pikeperch had one similar main band with a molecular mass of 61 kDa. Proteolytic enzymes of seminal plasma from pike showed high individual variability. These results suggest that multiple forms of proteolytic enzymes exist in seminal plasma of teleosts and they differ among fish families and species.  相似文献
