Photoperiodic lighting can promote flowering of long‐day plants (LDPs) and inhibit flowering of short‐day plants (SDPs). Red (R) and far‐red (FR) light regulate flowering through phytochromes, whereas blue light does so primarily through cryptochromes. In contrast, the role of green light in photoperiodic regulation of flowering has been inconsistent in previous studies. We grew four LDP species (two petunia cultivars, ageratum, snapdragon and Arabidopsis) and two SDP species (three chrysanthemum cultivars and marigold) in a greenhouse under truncated 9‐h short days with or without 7‐h day‐extension lighting from green light (peak = 521 nm) at 0, 2, 13 or 25 μmol m?2 s?1 or R + white (W) + FR light at 2 μmol m?2 s?1. Increasing the green photon flux density from 0 to 25 μmol m?2 s?1 accelerated flowering of all LDPs and delayed flowering of all SDPs. Petunia flowered similarly fast under R + W + FR light and moderate green light but was shorter and developed more branches under green light. To be as effective as R + W + FR light, saturation green photon flux densities were 2 μmol m?2 s?1 for LDP ageratum and SDP marigold and 13 μmol m?2 s?1 for LDP petunia. Snapdragon was the least sensitive to green light. In Arabidopsis, cryptochrome 2 mediated promotion of flowering under moderate green light, whereas both phytochrome B and cryptochrome 2 mediated that under R + W + FR light. We conclude that 7‐h day‐extension lighting from green light‐emitting diodes can control flowering of photoperiodic ornamentals and that in Arabidopsis, cryptochrome 2 mediates promotion of flowering under green light.  相似文献

The claim of methane (CH4) formation in plants has caused much controversy and debate within the scientific community over the past 4 years. Here, using both stable isotope and concentration measurements, we demonstrate that CH4 formation occurs in plant cell cultures that were grown in the dark under sterile conditions. Under non‐stress conditions the plant cell cultures produced trace amounts [0.3–0.6 ng g?1 dry weight (DW) h?1] of CH4 but these could be increased by one to two orders of magnitude (up to 12 ng g?1 DW h?1) when sodium azide, a compound known to disrupt electron transport flow at the cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV) in plant mitochondria, was added to the cell cultures. The addition of other electron transport chain (ETC) inhibitors did not result in significant CH4 formation indicating that a site‐specific disturbance of the ETC at complex IV causes CH4 formation in plant cells. Our study is an important first step in providing more information on non‐microbial CH4 formation from living plants particularly under abiotic stress conditions that might affect the electron transport flow at the cytochrome c oxidase in plant mitochondria.  相似文献

Methane efflux was studied in stands of three emergent macrophyte species (Equisetum fluviatile, Schoenoplectus lacustris and Phragmites australis) commonly found in the littoral zone of boreal lakes. In vegetation stands with relatively low methane (CH4) emissions (<0.3 mol m?2 (ice‐free period)?1), the seasonal variation of CH4 efflux was better correlated with the dynamics of plant growth than variation in sediment temperature. In dense and productive vegetation stands that released high amounts of CH4 (2.3–7.7 mol m?2 (ice‐free period)?1), the seasonal variation in CH4 efflux was correlated with sediment temperature, indicating that methanogens were more limited by temperature than substrate supply. The bottom type at the growth site of the emergent plants significantly influenced the ratio of CH4 efflux to aboveground biomass of plants (Eff : B). The lowest Eff : B ratio was found in E. fluviatile stands growing on sand bottom under experimental conditions and the highest in P. australis‐dominated littoral areas accumulating detritus from external sources. The future changes expected in the hydrology of boreal lakes and rivers because of climatic warming may impact the growth conditions of aquatic macrophytes as well as decomposition and accumulation of detritus and, thus, CH4 effluxes from boreal lakes.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship between vascular plant production and CH4 emissions from an arctic wet tundra ecosystem in north‐east Greenland. Light intensity was manipulated by shading during three consecutive growing seasons (1998–2000). The shading treatment resulted in lower carbon cycling in the ecosystem as mean seasonal net ecosystem exchange (NEE) decreased from ?336 to ?196 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 and from ?476 to ?212 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and 2000, respectively, and total ecosystem respiration decreased from 125 to 94 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and from 409 to 306 mg CO2 m?2 h?1 in 2000. Seasonal mean CH4 emissions in controls and shaded plots were, respectively, 6.5 and 4.5 mg CH4 m?2 h?1 in 1999 and 8.3 and 6.2 mg CH4 m?2 h?1 in 2000. We found that CH4 emission was sensitive to NEE and carbon turnover, and it is reasonable to assume that the correlation was due to a combined effect of vegetative CH4 transport and substrate quality coupled to vascular plant production. Total above‐ground biomass was correlated to mean seasonal CH4 emission, but separation into species showed that plant‐mediated CH4 transport was highly species dependent. Potential CH4 production peaked at the same depth as maximum root density (5–15 cm) and treatment differences further suggest that substrate quality was negatively affected by decreased NEE in the shaded plots. The concentration of dissolved CH4 decreased in the control plots as the growing season progressed while it was relatively stable in the shaded plots. This suggests that a progressively better developed root system in the controls increased the capacity to transport CH4 from the soil to the atmosphere. In conclusion, vascular plant photosynthetic rate and subsequent allocation of recently fixed carbon to below‐ground structures seemed to influence both vegetative CH4 transport and substrate quality.  相似文献

Biogenic emissions of halomethanes (CH3CI, CH3Br and CH3I) and methanethiol (CH3SH) are of major significance to atmospheric chemistry, but there is little information on such emissions from higher plants. We present evidence that plants can produce all these gases through an identical methyltransferase reaction. A survey of 118 herbaceous species, based on CH3I production by leaf discs supplied with Kl, detected the presence of in vivo halide methyltransferase activity in 87 species. The activities ranged over nearly 4 orders of magnitude. Plants generally considered salt tolerant had relatively low activities, and salinization of three such species did not increase the activity. The highest activities were found in the family Brassicaceae. Leaf extracts of Brassica oleracea catalysed the S-adenosyl-L-methioninc-dependenl niethylalion of the halides I?, Br? and CI? to the respective halomethanes. In addition, the extract similarly methylated HS? (bisulphide) to CH3SH. These two types of enzyme activity (halide and bisulphide methyltransferase) were also present in all of the 20 species comprising a subsample that represented the range of CH3I emissions observed in the initial survey of in vivo CH3I production ability, and in a marine red alga Endocladia muricata. Moreover, the two activities occurred in approximately the same ratio in all the higher plants tested. These findings highlight the potential of higher plants to contribute to the atmosphericbudget of halomethanes and melhanethiol. The halide and bisulphide methyltransferase activities may also provide a mechanism for the elimination of halide and HS? ions, both of which are known to be phytotoxic.  相似文献

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) stems showed increased elongation under two types of vegetative shade: canopy shade (low red to far red [R/FR] ratio) and neighbouring proximity shade (FR enrichment). Hypocotyls also elongated more under narrow-band FR light than under narrow-band R light. Ethylene levels were determined in actively elongating 7-day-old hypocotyls and 17-day-old internodes under three R/FR ratios. Ethylene levels were lower in both sunflower hypocotyls and internodes when the R/FR ratio was reduced. Both FR enrichment of normal R/FR ratio and narrow-band FR light with very low light irradiance resulted in reduction in ethylene levels in 7-day-old hypocotyls. Further, in application experiments, sunflower stems grown under low R/FR ratio were more sensitive to ethephon and less sensitive to aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) than stems grown under high R/FR ratio. Low R/FR ratio appears to initiate reduction in ethylene levels in sunflower seedlings, allowing maximum stem elongation. These results, and findings of other authors, suggest that various plant species may have developed different ways of regulating stem elongation and ethylene levels in response to low R/FR ratio.  相似文献

Seedlings of six major European temperate forest tree species (Fagus sylvatica, Acer pseudoplatanus, Quercus robur, Taxus baccata, Abies alba, Pinus sylvestris) were exposed to 360, 500, and 660 μL CO2 L?1 in the understorey of a 120‐y‐old forest over two growing seasons. Seedlings rooted in the natural forest soil within 36 open‐top chambers (12 OTCs per CO2 treatment), each with a different known quantum flux density (QFD) ranging from 0.36 to 2.16 mol m?2 d?1 (= 0.8% to 4.8% of full sun). In contrast to a frequent assumption the natural CO2 concentration in the understorey is close to the ambient concentration in the free atmosphere during daytime. The CO2‐effect on seedling growth differed greatly among species and was strongly codetermined by microsite‐specific QFD. Biomass production in the deep‐shade tolerant species Fagus and Taxus increased by 73% and 37% under elevated CO2 in low QFD microsites but was not significantly different among CO2‐treatments in high QFD microsites. The less shade‐tolerant species Acer, Quercus, and Abies showed no significant response to elevated CO2 in low QFD microsites, but increased their biomass by 39%, 25%, and 55% in high QFD microsites. In the shade‐intolerant Pinus, seedling survival was too low for a safe conclusion. Our data showed that the largest relative responses to increasing CO2 occurred at a comparatively small increase from 360 to 500 μL L?1 with only small and non‐significant changes with a further increase to 660 μL L?1. Subtle shifts in the availability of light can totally reverse interspecific differences in the CO2 response. Given these different responses, we conclude that increasing atmospheric CO2 is likely to induce changes in species composition of temperate forests due to altered chances of recruitment. However, these shifts will depend on light patterns in the understorey, and thus on canopy structure, disturbance patterns and forest management.  相似文献

Arctic wetlands are currently net sources of atmospheric CH4. Due to their complex biogeochemical controls and high spatial and temporal variability, current net CH4 emissions and gross CH4 processes have been difficult to quantify, and their predicted responses to climate change remain uncertain. We investigated CH4 production, oxidation, and surface emissions in Arctic polygon tundra, across a wet‐to‐dry permafrost degradation gradient from low‐centered (intact) to flat‐ and high‐centered (degraded) polygons. From 3 microtopographic positions (polygon centers, rims, and troughs) along the permafrost degradation gradient, we measured surface CH4 and CO2 fluxes, concentrations and stable isotope compositions of CH4 and DIC at three depths in the soil, and soil moisture and temperature. More degraded sites had lower CH4 emissions, a different primary methanogenic pathway, and greater CH4 oxidation than did intact permafrost sites, to a greater degree than soil moisture or temperature could explain. Surface CH4 flux decreased from 64 nmol m?2 s?1 in intact polygons to 7 nmol m?2 s?1 in degraded polygons, and stable isotope signatures of CH4 and DIC showed that acetate cleavage dominated CH4 production in low‐centered polygons, while CO2 reduction was the primary pathway in degraded polygons. We see evidence that differences in water flow and vegetation between intact and degraded polygons contributed to these observations. In contrast to many previous studies, these findings document a mechanism whereby permafrost degradation can lead to local decreases in tundra CH4 emissions.  相似文献

At the southern margin of permafrost in North America, climate change causes widespread permafrost thaw. In boreal lowlands, thawing forested permafrost peat plateaus (‘forest’) lead to expansion of permafrost‐free wetlands (‘wetland’). Expanding wetland area with saturated and warmer organic soils is expected to increase landscape methane (CH4) emissions. Here, we quantify the thaw‐induced increase in CH4 emissions for a boreal forest‐wetland landscape in the southern Taiga Plains, Canada, and evaluate its impact on net radiative forcing relative to potential long‐term net carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange. Using nested wetland and landscape eddy covariance net CH4 flux measurements in combination with flux footprint modeling, we find that landscape CH4 emissions increase with increasing wetland‐to‐forest ratio. Landscape CH4 emissions are most sensitive to this ratio during peak emission periods, when wetland soils are up to 10 °C warmer than forest soils. The cumulative growing season (May–October) wetland CH4 emission of ~13 g CH4 m?2 is the dominating contribution to the landscape CH4 emission of ~7 g CH4 m?2. In contrast, forest contributions to landscape CH4 emissions appear to be negligible. The rapid wetland expansion of 0.26 ± 0.05% yr?1 in this region causes an estimated growing season increase of 0.034 ± 0.007 g CH4 m?2 yr?1 in landscape CH4 emissions. A long‐term net CO2 uptake of >200 g CO2 m?2 yr?1 is required to offset the positive radiative forcing of increasing CH4 emissions until the end of the 21st century as indicated by an atmospheric CH4 and CO2 concentration model. However, long‐term apparent carbon accumulation rates in similar boreal forest‐wetland landscapes and eddy covariance landscape net CO2 flux measurements suggest a long‐term net CO2 uptake between 49 and 157 g CO2 m?2 yr?1. Thus, thaw‐induced CH4 emission increases likely exert a positive net radiative greenhouse gas forcing through the 21st century.  相似文献

Invasive plants can influence ecosystem processes such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wetland systems directly through plant-mediated transfer of GHGs to the atmosphere or through indirect modification of the environment. However, patterns of plant invasion often co-vary with other environmental gradients, so attributing ecosystem effects to invasion can be difficult in observational studies. Here, we assessed the impact of Phragmites australis invasion into native shortgrass communities on methane (CH4) emissions by conducting field measurements of CH4 emissions along transects of invasion by Phragmites in two neighboring brackish marsh sites and compared these findings to those from a field-based mesocosm experiment. We found remarkable differences in CH4 emissions and the influence of Phragmites on CH4 emissions between the two neighboring marsh sites. While Phragmites consistently increased CH4 emissions dramatically by 10.4 ± 3.7 µmol m?2 min?1 (mean ± SE) in our high-porewater CH4 site, increases in CH4 emissions were much smaller (1.4 ± 0.5 µmol m?2 min?1) and rarely significant in our low-porewater CH4 site. While CH4 emissions in Phragmites-invaded zones of both marsh sites increased significantly, the presence of Phragmites did not alter emissions in a complementary mesocosm experiment. Seasonality and changes in temperature and light availability caused contrasting responses of CH4 emissions from Phragmites- versus native zones. Our data suggest that Phragmites-mediated CH4 emissions are particularly profound in soils with innately high rates of CH4 production. We demonstrate that the effects of invasive species on ecosystem processes such as GHG emissions may be predictable qualitatively but highly variable quantitatively. Therefore, generalizations cannot be made with respect to invader-ecosystem processes, as interactions between the invader and local abiotic conditions that vary both spatially and temporally on the order of meters and hours, respectively, can have a stronger impact on GHG emissions than the invader itself.  相似文献

The photosynthetic capabilities of the fern Pteris cretica var. ouvrardii were analysed by means of the light response curves of CO2 exchange. In control growth conditions (greenhouse, low-light: 20–32 W m?2); photosynthesis was shown to be saturated for low irradiance (20–25 W m?2); the saturating photosynthetic rate, very low as compared to higher plants, was due to an extremely high intracellular resistance. When irradiance during the photosynthesis measurement was higher than 60–80 W m?2, a constant decline of net CO2 exchange as a function of time was observed. When irradiance during growth was enhanced, whether in greenhouse (20–250 W m?2) or controlled (62 W m?2) conditions, the first fronds that had developed in the new condition from the crosier stage exhibited decreased net maximal photosynthesis and a decreased efficiency in low light, but saturating irradiance was unmodified. However, the fronds whose entire differentiation (from meristem) occurred under these moderate irradiances (plants defoliated of all fronds and crosiers at the time of transfer), possessed more efficient photosynthetic characteristics than control plants. Pteris is able to grow under extreme shade conditions (4–8 W m?2); light saturating photosynthesis and efficiency are higher under extreme shade than under control conditions. These adaptive characteristics indicate that Pteris is a well-adapted shade species.  相似文献

Wetlands are the single largest natural source of atmospheric methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas, and occur extensively in the northern hemisphere. Large discrepancies remain between “bottom‐up” and “top‐down” estimates of northern CH4 emissions. To explore whether these discrepancies are due to poor representation of nongrowing season CH4 emissions, we synthesized nongrowing season and annual CH4 flux measurements from temperate, boreal, and tundra wetlands and uplands. Median nongrowing season wetland emissions ranged from 0.9 g/m2 in bogs to 5.2 g/m2 in marshes and were dependent on moisture, vegetation, and permafrost. Annual wetland emissions ranged from 0.9 g m?2 year?1 in tundra bogs to 78 g m?2 year?1 in temperate marshes. Uplands varied from CH4 sinks to CH4 sources with a median annual flux of 0.0 ± 0.2 g m?2 year?1. The measured fraction of annual CH4 emissions during the nongrowing season (observed: 13% to 47%) was significantly larger than that was predicted by two process‐based model ensembles, especially between 40° and 60°N (modeled: 4% to 17%). Constraining the model ensembles with the measured nongrowing fraction increased total nongrowing season and annual CH4 emissions. Using this constraint, the modeled nongrowing season wetland CH4 flux from >40° north was 6.1 ± 1.5 Tg/year, three times greater than the nongrowing season emissions of the unconstrained model ensemble. The annual wetland CH4 flux was 37 ± 7 Tg/year from the data‐constrained model ensemble, 25% larger than the unconstrained ensemble. Considering nongrowing season processes is critical for accurately estimating CH4 emissions from high‐latitude ecosystems, and necessary for constraining the role of wetland emissions in a warming climate.  相似文献

Sources of methane (CH4) become highly variable for countries undergoing a heightened period of development due to both human activity and climate change. An urgent need therefore exists to budget key sources of CH4, such as wetlands (rice paddies and natural wetlands) and lakes (including reservoirs and ponds), which are sensitive to these changes. For this study, references in relation to CH4 emissions from rice paddies, natural wetlands, and lakes in China were first reviewed and then reestimated based on the review itself. Total emissions from the three CH4 sources were 11.25 Tg CH4 yr?1 (ranging from 7.98 to 15.16 Tg CH4 yr?1). Among the emissions, 8.11 Tg CH4 yr?1 (ranging from 5.20 to 11.36 Tg CH4 yr?1) derived from rice paddies, 2.69 Tg CH4 yr?1 (ranging from 2.46 to 3.20 Tg CH4 yr?1) from natural wetlands, and 0.46 Tg CH4 yr?1 (ranging from 0.33 to 0.59 Tg CH4 yr?1) from lakes (including reservoirs and ponds). Plentiful water and warm conditions, as well as its large rice paddy area make rice paddies in southeastern China the greatest overall source of CH4, accounting for approximately 55% of total paddy emissions. Natural wetland estimates were slightly higher than the other estimates owing to the higher CH4 emissions recorded within Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau peatlands. Total CH4 emissions from lakes were estimated for the first time by this study, with three quarters from the littoral zone and one quarter from lake surfaces. Rice paddies, natural wetlands, and lakes are not constant sources of CH4, but decreasing ones influenced by anthropogenic activity and climate change. A new progress‐based model used in conjunction with more observations through model‐data fusion approach could help obtain better estimates and insights with regard to CH4 emissions deriving from wetlands and lakes in China.  相似文献

Rice paddy is a major source of anthropogenic terrestrial methane (CH4). China has the second‐largest area of rice cultivation in the world, accounting for ca. 19% of the world's rice‐producing area. Recognizing the significance of China's rice cultivation in the global CH4 budget, we estimated the CH4 emissions resulting from irrigated rice cultivation in China from 1960 to 2050 using a CH4MOD model. The model estimates suggest that the annual CH4 emissions decreased from 5.62 Tg yr?1 in 1960 to 4.13 Tg yr?1 in 1970, and this decrease was attributed to changes in water management from continuous flooding to mid‐season drainage irrigation. Since the early 1970s, the amount of CH4 emissions gradually increased to 6.85 Tg yr?1 by 2009 because of significant improvements in crop production that led to high‐crop residue retention. Higher levels of CH4 emissions occurred in southern China, where double rice cropping systems are most common. For the A1B and B1 scenarios of the IPCC Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES), the amount of CH4 emissions from 2010 to 2050 is predicted to increase at an average rate of 1.2 kg ha?1 yr?1 in response to global warming. Compared to 2009, the CH4 flux is predicted to increase by ca. 14% by the late 2040s, and the increase in these emissions in northeastern China is estimated to become more significant than in the other rice‐growing regions of the country. Under the assumptions that the rice‐producing land area will remain the same, decrease by 25% or increase by 38% by the late 2040s, the CH4 emissions are projected to be 7.8, 5.6 or 11.7 Tg yr?1, respectively.  相似文献

This study examined four species of Syzygium (S. firmum, S. makul, S. operculatum, S. rubicundum) Myrtaceae, a tree genus that dominates the canopy of rain forests of south‐west Sri Lanka. Syzygium spp. occupy differing habitats with relation to succession and forest topography. We examined differences in leaf morphology and physiology in response to amount of shade, an important environmental variable affecting Syzygium distribution within the forest. To study change in leaf structure and physiology, environmental shelters were constructed simulating forest shade that differed in quality, quantity and duration. Seedlings were exposed to: (i) 0% shade (full sun, FS), red : far red (R : FR) ratio 1.27; (ii) 65% shade (large opening, LO) with direct sunlight similar to the centre of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.27; (iii) 82% shade (small opening, SO) with direct sunlight similar to the centre of a small canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.27; (iv) 58% uniform light shade (LS) with a quality similar to the outside edge of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 1.05; (v) 85% uniform medium shade (MS) with a quality similar to the inside forest edge of a large canopy opening, R : FR ratio 0.97; (vi) 99% uniform deep shade (DS) similar to that of the forest understorey, R : FR ratio 0.23. The shelters were constructed in a large open area at the field station of the Sinharaja World Heritage site, Sri Lanka. Seedlings of each species were grown for two years in their respective shade treatments before physiological, morphological and anatomical measurements were made on leaves. Variation in leaf structure and physiology between the species was associated with differences in shade‐tolerance and water‐use. All species increased in photosynthesis rates and dimensions in leaf structure (leaf blade and cuticle thickness, stomatal density, thickness of upper and lower epidermis, and thickness of palisade mesophyll) with decrease in shade. In contrast, stomatal conductivity was highest in the DS (99% shade) treatment. Leaves of Syzygium firmum were thickest and largest in area. S. firmum also had highest photosynthesis in the SO (82% shade) treatment. S. firmum was the most shade‐tolerant of all species: it grows well in low shade and its leaf structure suggests it to be the most conservative in water‐use of the Syzygium spp. In the forest S. firmum can persist in the forest shade as established seedlings, but grows best within canopy openings of late‐seral rain forest. Leaves of S. operculatum were thinnest but had highest stomatal densities of the four species. S. operculatum is considered shade‐intolerant, with a leaf structure suggesting it to be prone to desiccation, and by implication susceptible to drought. S. operculatum is found along streams within early seral rain forest habitat, often originating on stream banks after land clearance for cultivation. In the FS (0% shade) treatment, S. rubicundun had highest photosynthesis rates and greatest number of leaves but smallest leaf area of the Syzygium species. S. rubicundum is more shade‐intolerant but more efficient in water‐use than S. operculatum. S. rubicundum is a mid‐seral canopy tree of the midslope stands that are thought to have originated after catastrophic windthrows or swidden cultivation. The leaf physiology and structure of S. makul suggests it to be both moderately shade‐tolerant and conservative in water‐use. It is the most widely distributed Syzygium species across the topography of late‐seral rain forest. We suggest forest disturbance and hydrology are important environmental factors that influence distribution of Syzygium species across the topography. Results from this study contribute to a body of knowledge suggesting that canopy tree species of rain forests in south‐west Sri Lanka have discrete affinities to topography and differences in successional status, and that adaptations in leaf structure and physiology are indicative of such phenomena. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 141 , 365–377.  相似文献

In this study, we quantify the impacts of climate and land use on soil N2O and CH4 fluxes from tropical forest, agroforest, arable and savanna ecosystems in Africa. To do so, we measured greenhouse gases (GHG) fluxes from 12 different ecosystems along climate and land‐use gradients at Mt. Kilimanjaro, combining long‐term in situ chamber and laboratory soil core incubation techniques. Both methods showed similar patterns of GHG exchange. Although there were distinct differences from ecosystem to ecosystem, soils generally functioned as net sources and sinks for N2O and CH4 respectively. N2O emissions correlated positively with soil moisture and total soil nitrogen content. CH4 uptake rates correlated negatively with soil moisture and clay content and positively with SOC. Due to moderate soil moisture contents and the dominance of nitrification in soil N turnover, N2O emissions of tropical montane forests were generally low (<1.2 kg N ha?1 year?1), and it is likely that ecosystem N losses are driven instead by nitrate leaching (~10 kg N ha?1 year?1). Forest soils with well‐aerated litter layers were a significant sink for atmospheric CH4 (up to 4 kg C ha?1 year?1) regardless of low mean annual temperatures at higher elevations. Land‐use intensification significantly increased the soil N2O source strength and significantly decreased the soil CH4 sink. Compared to decreases in aboveground and belowground carbon stocks enhanced soil non‐CO2 GHG emissions following land‐use conversion from tropical forests to homegardens and coffee plantations were only a small factor in the total GHG budget. However, due to lower ecosystem carbon stock changes, enhanced N2O emissions significantly contributed to total GHG emissions following conversion of savanna into grassland and particularly maize. Overall, we found that the protection and sustainable management of aboveground and belowground carbon and nitrogen stocks of agroforestry and arable systems is most crucial for mitigating GHG emissions from land‐use change.  相似文献

Willow coppice, energy maize and Miscanthus were evaluated regarding their soil‐derived trace gas emission potential involving a nonfertilized and a crop‐adapted slow‐release nitrogen (N) fertilizer scheme. The N application rate was 80 kg N ha?1 yr?1 for the perennial crops and 240 kg N ha?1 yr?1 for the annual maize. A replicated field experiment was conducted with 1‐year measurements of soil fluxes of CH4, CO2 and N2O in weekly intervals using static chambers. The measurements revealed a clear seasonal trend in soil CO2 emissions, with highest emissions being found for the N‐fertilized Miscanthus plots (annual mean: 50 mg C m?² h?1). Significant differences between the cropping systems were found in soil N2O emissions due to their dependency on amount and timing of N fertilization. N‐fertilized maize plots had highest N2O emissions by far, which accumulated to 3.6 kg N2O ha?1 yr?1. The contribution of CH4 fluxes to the total soil greenhouse gas subsumption was very small compared with N2O and CO2. CH4 fluxes were mostly negative indicating that the investigated soils mainly acted as weak sinks for atmospheric CH4. To identify the system providing the best ratio of yield to soil N2O emissions, a subsumption relative to biomass yields was calculated. N‐fertilized maize caused the highest soil N2O emissions relative to dry matter yields. Moreover, unfertilized maize had higher relative soil N2O emissions than unfertilized Miscanthus and willow. These results favour perennial crops for bioenergy production, as they are able to provide high yields with low N2O emissions in the field.  相似文献

The semiarid and arid zones cover a quarter of the global land area and support one‐fifth of the world's human population. A significant fraction of the global soil–atmosphere exchange for climatically active gases occurs in semiarid and arid zones yet little is known about these exchanges. A study was made of the soil–atmosphere exchange of CH4, CO, N2O and NOx in the semiarid Mallee system, in north‐western Victoria, Australia, at two sites: one pristine mallee and the other cleared for approximately 65 years for farming (currently wheat). The mean (± standard error) rates of CH4 exchange were uptakes of ?3.0 ± 0.5 ng(C) m?2 s?1 for the Mallee and ?6.0 ± 0.3 ng(C) m?2 s?1 for the Wheat. Converting mallee forest to wheat crop increases CH4 uptake significantly. CH4 emissions were observed in the Mallee in summer and were hypothesized to arise from termite activity. We find no evidence that in situ growing wheat plants emit CH4, contrary to a recent report. The average CO emissions of 10.1 ± 1.8 ng(C) m?2 s?1 in the Mallee and 12.6 ± 2.0 ng(C) m?2 s?1 in the Wheat. The average N2O emissions were 0.5 ± 0.1 ng(N) m?2 s?1 from the pristine Mallee and 1.4 ± 0.3 ng(N) m?2 s?1 from the Wheat. The experimental results show that the processes controlling these exchanges are different to those in temperate systems and are poorly understood.  相似文献
