Long-term effects of catchment liming on invertebrates in upland streams   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
1. Catchment liming to mitigate acidification causes major chemical change in freshwaters but longer‐term effects are poorly understood. Using a replicated basin‐scale experiment with a multiple BACI design (= before‐after‐control‐impact), we assessed chemical and biological effects for 10 years after the catchments of three acidified Welsh streams at Llyn Brianne were limed in 1987/88. 2. Stream chemistry was measured weekly to monthly, and macroinvertebrates monitored annually, between 1985 and 1998. Biological change through time was assessed from the abundance and taxon richness of invertebrates. We paid particular attention to 18 species known to be acid‐sensitive. The effects of liming were assessed by comparing chemical and biological trends among the three replicate limed streams, three acid reference streams and two naturally circumneutral streams. 3. Following single lime applications, acid‐base chemistry in treated streams changed significantly. High mean pH (> 6), increased calcium (> 2.5 mg L?1) and low aluminium (< 0.1 mg L?1) persisted throughout the 10 years following liming. 4. The effects of liming on invertebrates were modest. Acid sensitive taxa increased significantly in abundance in limed streams, but only during 2 years following treatment. Significant effects on richness were more sustained, but on average added only 2–3 acid‐sensitive species to the treated streams, roughly one‐third of their average richness in adjacent circumneutral streams. Only the mayfly Baetis rhodani and the stonefly Brachyptera risi occurred significantly more often in limed streams after treatment than before it. 5. Despite these modest long‐term effects on invertebrates, nearly 80% of the total pool of acid‐sensitive species has occurred at least once in the limed streams in the 10 years since treatment. This pattern of occurrence suggests that the colonization of limed streams by acid‐sensitive taxa reflects limited persistence rather than restricted dispersal. We present evidence to show that episodes of low pH continued to affect acid‐sensitive taxa even after liming. We highlight the importance of extending the time‐periods over which the effects of large‐scale ecological experiments are assessed.  相似文献

Gill net catches of perch Perca fluviatilis in eight acidified lakes immediately before liming are compared] with catches in the same lakes two years after liming. Simultaneously, six control lakes, not limed, were investigated with the same procedures. A significant increase in the average catches of perch was found in the limed lakes, but not in the control lakes. This result confirms earlier reports, although seldom supported with data from controls, on successful recovery after liming.  相似文献

In this study, we surveyed the long term effects of liming and fertilizing in old Scots pine stands on the ectomycorrhiza (ECM) colonization, tree growth and needle nutrient concentration 35 years later. Four mature stands of Scots pine on low productive mineral soil were limed in 1959 and 1964 with total doses of limestone ranging from 3 to 15 Mg ha?1 and fertilized with nitrogen (N) in 1970. Thirty-five years after the first liming treatment, all stands were analysed for tree growth and needle nutrient concentrations and two of the stands were also analysed for ECM colonization. ECM colonization increased significantly with liming from 61.5% in the control plots to 88% in the plot with the highest limestone dose. ECM colonization increased with increasing pH in the humus layer from 62% colonization at pH?=?3.5 to 90% at pH?=?6.5 and decreased with increasing amount of extractable phosphorus (P) in the humus. Liming did not affect the frequencies of different ECM morphotypes or dead short root tips, the fine root biomass or necromass. ECM colonization was uncorrelated with needle nutrient concentrations or tree increment. Liming did not significantly affect tree growth. However, nutrient concentrations of current-year needles were affected by prior liming. Ca concentrations in current-year needles increased from approximately 15 mg g?1 in control treatments to more than 30 mg g?1 in limed plots, whereas concentrations of Mn, Al, Fe, and in two stands, B, decreased due to liming. In conclusion, liming with doses up to 15 Mg ha?1 was detectable in stands 35 years after treatment. The liming significantly increased the ECM colonization of Scots pine fine roots, increased the needle nutrient concentration of Ca and decreased the needle concentrations of Mn, Al, and Fe.  相似文献

1. When available, Daphnia spp. are often preferred by age‐0 yellow perch and bluegill sunfish because of energetic profitability. We hypothesised that predation by age‐0 yellow perch could lead to a midsummer decline (MSD) of Daphnia spp. and that priority effects may favour yellow perch because they hatch before bluegill, allowing them to capitalise on Daphnia spp. prior to bluegill emergence. 2. Data were collected from 2004 to 2010 in Pelican Lake, Nebraska, U.S.A. The lake experienced a prolonged MSD in all but 1 year (2005), generally occurring within the first 2 weeks of June except in 2008 and 2010 when it occurred at the end of June. MSD timing is not solely related to seasonal patterns of age‐0 yellow perch consumption. Nevertheless, when Daphnia spp. biomass was low during 2004 and 2006–2010 (<4 mg wet weight L?1), predation by age‐0 yellow perch seems to have suppressed Daphnia spp. biomass (i.e. <1.0 mg wet weight L?1). The exception was 2005 when age‐0 yellow perch were absent. 3. Growth of age‐0 bluegill was significantly faster in 2005, when Daphnia spp. were available in greater densities (>4 mg wet weight L?1) compared with the other years (<0.2 mg wet weight L?1). 4. We conclude that age‐0 yellow perch are capable of reducing Daphnia biomass prior to the arrival of age‐0 bluegill, ultimately slowing bluegill growth. Thus, priority effects favour age‐0 yellow perch when competing with age‐0 bluegill for Daphnia. However, these effects may be minimised if there is a shorter time between hatching of the two species, higher Daphnia spp. densities or lower age‐0 yellow perch densities.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Total seston, and invertebrate drift were studied before and after lime addition to Fyllean River, a stream-iake system in Halland county, southwest Sweden, with poorly buffered waters undergoing acidification. 2. The largest effect of liming was on the chemistry of the water. Following liming with 23 mg CaCO3 l?1 the pH of the water changed from 5.8 to 6.8 and alkalinity from 0.04 to 0.13 meq l?1.Turbidity increased from 3.4 to 4.7 JTU with no change in colour. 3. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration of all samples was in the range 10.7–13.3 mg C l?1 with no significant change occurring due to liming. 4. Total seston increased from 4.35 mg DM 1?1 in unlimed conditions to 6.25 mg DM l?1 after lime addition. All significant changes in seston occurred in the smaller size fraction (0.45–25 μm). 5. Liming reduced the organic content of the partieulate material from an average of 61% to 39% immediately downstream of a lime silo (within 1 km) but had little effect when the river course was interrupted by lakes and impoundments. 6. The lakes in the river system had a larger effect on seston concentration than any effect of the lime addition by itself. Particle concentrations were reduced by 50–55% and DOC by about 1 mg C l?1as the water passed through the lakes. 7. Macroinvertebrate drift density was low in all samples before and after liming and typical of oligotrophic streams. Drift was significantly lower at limed (0.024 ind. m?3) than at unlimed (0.083 ind. m?3) locations. The decrease was only in total drift density with no significant change in the relative abundance of functional groups or in densities of single taxa, except for a reduction in drift of predators in the limed condition.  相似文献

Soil acidification can be detrimental to root growth and nutrient uptake, and liming may alleviate such acidification. In the following study, seedlings of sessile oak (Quercus petraea Liebl. M.) were grown in rhizotrons and subjected to liming (L) or gypsum (G) treatments and compared with the control (C). In order to study and interpret the impact of these calcium rich treatments on fine root development and tree growth, the following parameters were assessed: fine root biomass, fine root length, seedling development (height, diameter, leaves), seedling biomass, nutrient content of roots and seedlings, bulk soil and soil solution chemistry and rhizosphere soil chemistry. The results show that liming increased bulk soil pH, exchangeable Mg, Ca and the Ca/Al molar ratio, and decreased exchangeable Al, mainly in the A-horizon. Gypsum had a similar but smaller impact on exchangeable Al, Ca, H+ and the Ca/Al molar ratio in the A-horizon, but reacted with depth, so that exchangeable Mn, Mg and Ca were increased in the B-horizon. In the rhizosphere, the general pattern was determined by the treatment effects of the bulk soil. Most elements were more concentrated in the rhizosphere than in bulk soil, except for Ca which was less concentrated after liming or gypsum application. In the B-horizon rhizosphere pH was increased by the treatments (L > G,C) close to the root tips. Furthermore, the length of the zone with a positive root-induced pH increase was greater for the limed roots as compared with both the other treatments. Fine root growth was stimulated by liming (L > G,C) both in terms of biomass and length, whereas specific root length was not obviously affected apart from the indication of some stimulation after liming at the beginning. The live:dead ratio of fine roots was significantly higher in the limed rhizotrons as compared to the control (G not assessed), indicating lower mortality (higher longevity). Shoot growth showed greater lime-induced stimulation (L > G,C) as compared to root growth. As a result the shoot:root ratio was higher in the limed rhizotrons than in the control (L > G,C). Liming induced a higher allocation of P, S, Mg, Ca and K to the leaves, stem and twigs. Gypsum showed similar effects, but was only significant for S. Liming increased the foliar Ca/Al ratio by both increasing foliar Ca and decreasing foliar Al, whereas gypsum did not clearly improve foliar nutrition. This study suggests that a moderate application of lime can be successful in stimulating seedling growth, but that gypsum had no effect on seedling growth. It can be concluded that this lime-induced growth stimulation is directly related to the improved soil fertility status, and the alleviation of Al toxicity and acid stress, resulting in better foliar nutrition. The impact of liming on fine roots, as a consequence, was not limited to a stimulation of the total amount of fine roots, but also improved the root uptake performance. The essential oil of Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) leaves was extracted by hydro distillation and tested on female and male adults of Callosobruchus macullatus (F.) for insecticidal and repellent effects. GC-MS analysis was used to identify and quantify the volatile composition of the essential oil. Results showed that 1,8-cineole (34.2%) and α-pinene (29.0%) were the major components of the oil. Callistemon citrinus oil was found to be toxic to adult insects when applied by fumigation. Responses varied according to the gender of the insect and exposure time. LC50 values were 12.88 and 84.4 μL.?L?1 for males and females, respectively. An increase in exposure time from 3 to 24 h caused an increase in mortality from 50% to 100% in males and from 15.5% to 85.2% in females, at the highest concentration (500 μL.?L?1). The essential oil also had a repellent effect against C. macullatus in a filter paper arena test. After 2 and 4 h, 86% and 94%, respectively, repellent effects were demonstrated at the highest concentration of 0.4 μL?.cm?2. These observations suggest that C. citrinus essential oil may be usefully applied to control storage pests.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of acidic pH and acute aluminum (Al) exposure on the metabolic substrates of Astyanax bimaculatus, and on the ability of these animals to recover in clean water. After an acclimation period, sexually mature A. bimaculatus females were sorted into six glass aquaria with three experimental groups: control in neutral pH (7.0), acidic pH (5.5), and Al (0.5 mg·L− 1) in acidic pH (5.5). After a 96 h treatment, 10 animals from each experimental group were sampled and the rest were returned to clean water in neutral pH without Al for a recovery period of 96 h. The acidic pH, either alone or combined with Al, decreased T4 levels, whereas Al exposure increased T3 levels. Recovery of T3 levels occurred after 96 h. Al exposure decreased ovary and plasma proteins, muscle glycogen contents, and hepatic lipids due to lipoperoxidation. In the recovery phase, lipids decreased in most tissues, probably to re-establish ovary protein and hepatic glycogen. A. bimaculatus prioritized the use of energetic resources during acclimatization to Al instead of prioritizing reproduction, thereby avoiding the ovulation of impaired eggs.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to freeze sperm of sex‐reversed females (neomales) of perch and to test their fertilization ability. Sperm used was testicular (TSN), collected from females that have been inverted by means of externally administered 17‐alpha methyltestosterone. Sperm collected from intact males (SSNM) of the same origin were used as control. Prior to freezing, both TSN and SSNM were diluted into 300 mm glucose solution at the ratio of 1 : 6 and DMSO was used as cryoprotectant (10% final concentration). Crypreservation was performed in 0.5 ml straws placed into a polystyrene box, three cm above the liquid nitrogen level for 10 min and thereafter transferred fully into liquid nitrogen. Samples were thawed in 40°C water bath for 8 s and used for the fertilization experiments. Spermatozoa concentration of fresh TSN and SSNM were estimated with 45.3 × 109 and 37.8 × 109 spermatozoa ml?1, respectively. Both sperm velocity and motility showed significant decreases in the TSN (134.6 μm s?1 and 12.8%) compared to the SSNM (203.2 μm s?1 and 94.7%) at 10 s after sperm activation. However, no differences were observed in terms of hatching rates between fresh TSN and SSNM (42.5 vs 49.3%) at fertilization densities of 12 × 105 spermatozoa per egg. Frozen/thawed SSNM exhibited similar hatching rates at 12 × 105 and 2.4 × 105 spermatozoa per egg (37.2% vs 29.1%). Hatching rates for frozen/thawed TSN were about 7.3% with 12 × 105 spermatozoa per egg and did not show any difference at 2.4 × 105 spermatozoa per egg (6.6%). Stripped sperm of normal perch can be successfully frozen. Squeezing of the testes is not a good method for collection of testicular sperm resulting into low velocity, motility and hatching rate. To understand the influences of neomales on sperm quality on reproductive success further studies should be performed addressing a full assay of motility and fertility criteria when using stripped sperm from normal males and neomales. Additionally, the results indicate that many of sex reversed perch neomales are not able to release sperm and that for further studies some well spermiating neomales must to be selected.  相似文献

A large-scale liming program was initiated in Sweden in the mid-1970s to ameliorate the effects of acidification and to restore acidified lakes and rivers to conditions present before acidification. I compared the fish fauna composition and biomass among limed, acidified, and consistently circumneutral lakes. The study focused on (1) recolonization and fish assemblage development and (2) fish biomass and assemblage composition. Time-series data from 14 limed, 5 acid, and 10 circumneutral lakes, and a data set of 323 limed and 346 nonlimed circumneutral lakes, are analyzed. Long-term monitoring revealed that fish species richness increased after liming and was of the same magnitude in limed lakes as in nonlimed circumneutral lakes after 10–20 years. Species proportions differed between limed and nonlimed lakes, and the relative biomass of Perca fluviatilis (Eurasian perch) was in general higher, whereas cyprinid and pelagic species were less important in the limed lakes than in the nonlimed circumneutral lakes. Recolonization of fish species was found to be a crucial factor for the development of the fish assemblages after liming, and in several limed lakes the reintroduction of fish species has accelerated the recovery of pre-acidification fish assemblages.  相似文献

There are concerns that the anthropogenic acidification of Swedish forest soils may have severe effects on forest yield, and it has been suggested that liming could be used to counter this problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the survival, growth and element concentrations of C+1 needles of Picea abies (L.) Karst. seedlings planted on plots that had been acidified (in 12 annual treatments totalling 600 or 1200 kg S ha–1 in the form of elemental sulphur), limed (12×500=6000 kg lime ha–1 in the form of CaCO3) or N-fertilized (3×200=600 kg N ha–1 in the form of urea) prior to harvest. Seedlings growing on plots given a combination of the N plus low S treatments were also tested. None of the treatments, given to triplicate plots, significantly influenced seedling survival during the first five growing seasons. Furthermore, none of the treatments significantly affected growth, although the average growth rate was slightly higher for limed plots. The survival and growth of the seedlings are discussed in relation to differences in the cover of field-layer vegetation between the treatments after the final felling. Needles from seedlings in the limed plots showed significantly lower concentrations of Mn and Al, and higher concentrations of Ca and Zn compared with needles from seedlings in the other plots (i.e. control, high S or N-treated). The K concentration in the needles was significantly higher in limed plots than in high-S plots. Changes of element concentrations observed in the soil, associated with the treatments, where in some cases reflected in the needle concentrations.  相似文献

Summary The influence of liming on soil solution composition was compared in two laboratory amended soils and one field amended soil. In the laboratory study, soil solutions were sampled by miscible displacement at intervals of 1 and 10 weeks after liming. In addition to increases in pH and Ca, there were large reductions in the concentrations of Mg, K, Na, Si and Mn. Solution concentration of free Al decreased with liming; however, organically complexed Al increased, as did soluble organic matter. Liming also stimulated mineralization of N as indicated by increased solution NO3 levels. The field amended soils were obtained from a long-term cutting trial investigating the effects of lime on pasture. Despite the passage of a 16-year interval since application, the effects of lime on soil solution characteristics were still clearly evident and generally consistent with those observed in the laboratory study. Estimated leaching losses of Ca from limed soil were relatively low, amounting to 12%, 27% and 44% of the 4.2, 8.4 and 12.5 t lime ha−1 applied, respectively. The results suggest that, in Eastern Ireland, a lime treatment would maintain and elevated pH and would influence the avialability and mobility of plant nutrients for some decades following application.  相似文献

In this study, the population structure, growth and reproduction characteristics of 414 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L., 1758) from the ?kizcetepeler dam lake were investigated monthly between January and December 2000. Age groups ranged between I and VI for this species in the reservoir, with the second and third year‐classes dominating. Sex ratio was 1 : 1.4 (M : F), corresponding to 58.4% males and 41.6% females. Females attained greater size and age than males. The largest female captured was 24.8 cm FL, the largest male was 24.1 cm FL, both age VI. The von Bertalanffy growth equations and length–weight relationships were found as: Lt = 28.89[1 ?e?0.224(t+1.55)] for females, Lt = 26.71[1 ? e?0.259(t+1.55)] for males; Wt = 347.386[1?e?0.224h (t+1.55)]2.86 for females, Wt =286.48[1?e?0.259 (t+1.55)]2.92 for males; W = 0.0227 × L2.87 for females and W = 0.0194 × L2.92 for males. Significant statistical differences in condition factors between age classes and sexes were not found (P > 0.05, t‐test). Spawning period of this species in the lake was between April and May.  相似文献

The sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus, an invasive species, has expanded its range throughout much of Asia and into the Middle East. However, little is known of its adaptive changes regarding life history traits such as age, growth and mortality that could possibly explain its success as an invasive species. A detailed study of the invasive sharpbelly was conducted based on 4539 samples collected from July 2009 to June 2011 in Erhai Lake, China. Standard length ranged from 4.3–19.1 cm for females and 4.6–12.3 cm for males. Length–weight relationships for females and males were significantly different and described as W = 0.0076SL3.2608 and W = 0.0084SL3.1901, respectively. Otoliths are ideal for age determination because of the single annulus formed each year. Based on marginal increment analysis, the total mean CV for age estimate between two readings was 3.55%. The von Bertalanffy growth curves computed by observed length‐at‐age data were expressed as Lt = 25.6 (1 ? e?0.176 (t + 1.347)) for females and Lt = 16.4 (1 ? e?0.354 (t + 0.819)) for males. According to the age, growth and mortality data, there are three possible reasons for H. leucisculus attaining such dominance within a short time in Erhai Lake. First, because of the simple age structure of this species: 97.58% of males were 1–2 years old with a maximum age of only 3 years; 93.14% of females were 1–3 years old, with a maximum age of 6 years. Second, females grew larger than males at any age. Third, instantaneous mortality rates were much higher for males (4.22 year?1) than for females (1.17 year?1).  相似文献

The grey gurnard Eutrigla gurnardus (L.) has been identified by ICES as a potential commercial species in the NE Atlantic with recommendations made to derive information on population biology for stock assessment purposes. However, data on the population biology of this species is limited. In this study, data on the age, growth and maturity of grey gurnard were collected by otter trawling in the coastal waters of northwest Wales and Eastern Anglesey. Total length (TL) of fish sampled ranged between 2.1–33.0 cm (male) and 1.9–36.9 cm (female) with the majority of female (70.8%) fish between 11 and 20 cm TL and male fish (70.5%) between 11 and 18 cm TL. The percentage of fish >20 cm TL was larger for females (30.4%) compared to males (17.6%). Total weight (TW) for female and male grey gurnard in the stratified subsample ranged from 1.9 to 499.9 g for females and 2.1–390.0 g for males, with the majority of female (66.3%) and male (76.1%) fish between 10 and 60 g. TL/TW relations for male and female fish and both sexes combined were: TW = 0.006TL3.07, TW = 0.007TL3.03 and TW = 0.007TL3.05 respectively. Age structure (based on otolith reading) ranged between 0.5 and 7.5 years old for females and 0.5 to 5.5 years old for male with the majority of female (41.7%) and male (46.0%) fish aged as 1.5 years old. The age structure of female and male grey gurnards was significantly different with the majority of older fish (>2.5 years) being female. The von Bertalanffy growth functions were calculated as Lt = 32.4[1 ? e?0.24(t + 1.41)] for males, Lt = 45.9[1 ? e?0.16(t + 1.37)] for females and Lt = 44.0[1 ? e?0.18(t + 1.20)] for both sexes combined. Instantaneous rates of total mortality were similar for males and females and the combined Z value 1.00 year?1 with the natural mortality rate estimated as 0.33 year?1. The size at 50% maturity (L50) was estimated to be 25.3 cm TL for males, females and for both sexes combined. Age at 50% maturity (A50) was 3.2 years for both males and females. The results of this study provide the first information on the population biology of E. gurnardus in the Irish Sea, the first detailed study in the NE Atlantic since 1985 and helps to address the data gap identified by ICES in knowledge of the population biology of this species.  相似文献

The efficacy of clove oil as an anaesthetic and its effects on blood parameters in Nile perch Lates niloticus were evaluated in 2010. Clove oil concentrations of 49.3, 73.9 and 98.5?mg l?1 induced anaesthesia in <3?min, while the average recovery time from anaesthesia was 11?min 22 s. The optimal oil clove oil concentration was 49.3?mg l?1, inducing anaesthesia in 4?min 33 s, with recovery in 3?min 31 s. No stress response was elicited. Clove oil at a concentration of 24.6?mg l?1 was an effective sedative, whereas a concentration of 49.3?mg l?1 was sufficient for measuring fish and stripping gametes. A concentration of 73.9?mg l?1 induced anaesthesia within 4?min and fish recovered in 10?min. Therefore, clove oil was an effective anaesthetic and sedative for the handling of Nile perch within a mass range of 0.4–12?kg fish?1.  相似文献

The effect of liming on the flow of recently photosynthesized carbon to rhizosphere soil was studied using 13CO2 pulse labelling, in an upland grassland ecosystem in Scotland. The use of 13C enabled detection, in the field, of the effect of a 4‐year liming period of selected soil plots on C allocation from plant biomass to soil, in comparison with unlimed plots. Photosynthetic rates and carbon turnover were higher in plants grown in limed soils than in those from unlimed plots. Higher δ13C‰ values were detected in shoots from limed plants than in those from unlimed plants in samples clipped within 15 days of the end of pulse labelling. Analysis of the aboveground plant production corresponding to the 4‐year period of liming indicated that the standing biomass was higher in plots that received lime. Lower δ13C‰ values in limed roots compared with unlimed roots were found, whereas no significant difference was detected between soil samples. Extrapolation of our results indicated that more C has been lost through the soil than has been gained via photosynthetic assimilation because of pasture liming in Scotland during the period 1990–1998. However, the uncertainty associated with such extrapolation based on this single study is high and these estimates are provided only to set our findings in the broader context of national soil carbon emissions.  相似文献

The application of calcium‐ and magnesium‐rich materials to soil, known as liming, has long been a foundation of many agro‐ecosystems worldwide because of its role in counteracting soil acidity. Although liming contributes to increased rates of respiration from soil thereby potentially reducing soils ability to act as a CO2 sink, the long‐term effects of liming on soil organic carbon (Corg) sequestration are largely unknown. Here, using data spanning 129 years of the Park Grass Experiment at Rothamsted (UK), we show net Corg sequestration measured in the 0–23 cm layer at different time intervals since 1876 was 2–20 times greater in limed than in unlimed soils. The main cause of this large Corg accrual was greater biological activity in limed soils, which despite increasing soil respiration rates, led to plant C inputs being processed and incorporated into resistant soil organo‐mineral pools. Limed organo‐mineral soils showed: (1) greater Corg content for similar plant productivity levels (i.e. hay yields); (2) higher 14C incorporation after 1950s atomic bomb testing and (3) lower C : N ratios than unlimed organo‐mineral soils, which also indicate higher microbial processing of plant C. Our results show that greater Corg sequestration in limed soils strongly reduced the global warming potential of long‐term liming to permanent grassland suggesting the net contribution of agricultural liming to global warming could be lower than previously estimated. Our study demonstrates that liming might prove to be an effective mitigation strategy, especially because liming applications can be associated with a reduced use of nitrogen fertilizer which is a key cause for increased greenhouse gas emissions from agro‐ecosystems.  相似文献
