In the present study, the serum and hair levels of zinc, selenium, and copper were determined in children with iron-deficiency
anemia (IDA). A total of 52 anemic children aged 1–4 yr constituted the study group. Fortysix healthy children acted as controls.
The copper and zinc levels were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophometer. Serum and hair selenium was determined
by a spectroflourometric method. The serum zinc and selenium concentrations in the IDA group were found to be significantly
lower and serum copper significantly higher than those in the controls (p<0.05). Lower iron, zinc, and selenium concentrations (p<0.001) but not copper were found in hair (p>0.05). 相似文献

Premature graying of hair with unclear etiology, which is known as premature canities, is a common cause of referrals to the
dermatologists. We assessed the relationship between serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations with premature canities.
This study was conducted on patients under 20 years old suffering from premature canities, having a minimum of ten gray hair
fibers, and referring to university hospitals of Isfahan (Iran). The results were compared with age–sex-matched controls.
Demographic data and disease characteristics were recorded for two groups. We studied serum iron, copper, and zinc concentrations
of 66 patients and 66 controls using atomic absorption and Ferrozine methods. The mean age of studied cases was 17.8 ± 2.0 years,
and the mean age of the onset of canities was 15.5 ± 3.2 years with no significant difference between males and females (P > 0.05). Serum copper concentration was significantly lower in patients compared with controls (90.7 ± 37.4 vs. 105.3 ± 50.2 μg/dL,
P = 0.048), but serum iron concentration was significantly lower in controls compared to patients (88.8 ± 39.5 vs. 108.3 ± 48.4 μg/dL,
P = 0.008). Also, there was no significant difference between patients and controls in serum zinc concentration (114.8 ± 67.8
vs. 108.2 ± 49.9 μg/dL, P = 0.285). According to these results, among copper, zinc, and iron, a low serum copper concentration may play a role in premature
graying of hairs in our society. Further studies are needed to find the underlying mechanism of this relationship. 相似文献

We have studied zinc deficiency in hepatitis C patients (complete responder [C,R] 22, nonresponder [NR] 25) with relation to the therapeutic effect of interferon-α (IFN-α). Circadian variations in serum zinc levels were high in the morning (basal level) and then gradually decreased during the day in both chronic hepatitis C patients and healthy controls. Basal zinc levels in serum were significantly lower in chronic hepatitis C patients (73±3 μg/dL,n=12) than in controls (93±5 μg/dL). An injection of 10 MU of IFN-α to hepatitis C patients augmented the serum zinc reductions, up to 40% in 8 h. Serum cortisol levels were significantly elevated 8 h (25.6±2.3 μg/dL) after IFN-α dose. Forty-seven chronic hepatitis C patients were treated with IFN-α for 24 wk, and serum zinc and copper levels were determined 12 and 24 wk during and after the completion of IFN-α therapy. Serum zinc levels and zinc/copper ratio were higher in CRs than in NRs to IFN therapy at each time-point. Hepatic metallothionein staining became prominent after IFN therapy in most of CRs, whereas it diminished NRs. These data suggest that nutritional status of zinc influences the effect of IFN on hepatitis C patients. 相似文献

Selenium is an essential trace element and its isufficient status may cause serious health complications for both individuals
and the whole populations. To investigate the selenium status of the subpop-ulation in northeastern Bohemia represented by
the region ústí nad Orlicí, 253 serum, 469 urine, and 31 hair samples from 470 randomly selected volunteers between 6 and
65 yr of age have been analyzed for selenium concentration. Serum and hair Se were detected by instrumental neutron activation
analysis (means: 55 ±11 Μg Se/L sera, 0.268 ±0.040 Μg Se/g hair). Urine Se was measured by fluorimetry (12 ±5 Μg Se/L urine)
with coanalyses of Lyphocheck urine, SRM Urine 2670, and Seronorm urine for quality control of the method. Results proved
significant age-dependent differences, but gender differences were not significant. The frequency plot of serum Se proved
maximal frequencies in adults between 55 and 70 Μg Se/L and in children in the range 45–55 Μg Se/L. The same plots of urine
Se for both age groups showed maximal frequency in the limits 8–15 Μg Se/L. All indices used (Se in serum, urine, and hair)
confirmed mild to severe selenium deficiency in the population of the region. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the zinc levels in calves with trichophytosis and to research the importance of
zinc for fungi. The sera of 20 calves with trichophytosis and 10 healthy calves were used in this study. Zinc levels of the
sera were measured by the atomic absorption spectrophotometer method. Serum zinc levels of diseased and healthy animals were
found to be 42.0±16.6 μg/dL and 75.8±5.9 μg/dL, respectively. Serum zinc levels of diseased calves were lower than healthy
ones and this difference were found to be important statistically (p<0.001), whereas there is no statistical difference on the levels of lymphocyte, monocyte, granulocyte, erythrocyte, hemoglobin,
hematocrit, and mean corpuscular volume between groups. These parameters were not influenced by low zinc levels. 相似文献

To investigate the Zn status of inhabitants of the Czech Republic, 1155 serum and 132 hair samples were analyzed for zinc
content. Analyzed material was obtained from randomly selected volunteers of both sexes in the age range 6–65 yr. Subpopulations
from five regions were included in the study. Analyses of both materials were performed by Instrumental Neutron Activation
Analysis (INAA). Coanalyses of Standard Reference Materials (SRM) for quality control were performed. The results (mean 910
±276 Μg Zn/L serum and 189 ±45 Μg Zn/g hair) demonstrate satisfactory zinc status of the searched population. Significant
interregional differences and age-dependent differences, as well as sex-dependent differences have been detected by the use
of correlation analysis. On the basis of these results, serum Zn concentration results of individual categories according
to age and sex were evaluated, and on the grounds of mean ±2 standard deviations, indicative intervals were calculated. The
frequency of individual serum Zn concentrations proved that the population of the Czech Republic does not suffer from severe
zinc deficiency. On the other hand, about one-third of our inhabitants has their serum Zn concentrations below the cutoff
value of 800 Μg Zn/L serum, which means a marginal or mild Zn deficit of the organism. 相似文献

The effectiveness and success of antitubercular therapy is mainly measured by identifying the organism in sputum. In certain
patients, especially in geriatric patients, available tuberculosis tests are not satisfactory and do not provide enough information
on the effectiveness of antitubercular therapy, as the symptoms might be confused with the existing symptoms of ongoing diseases.
Therefore, 60 diagnosed and randomly selected patients with tuberculosis were included into this study. The patients with
other associated diseases likely to influence serum copper and zinc were not included in the study. The estimations of serum
copper and zinc were done in healthy volunteers and in tubercular patients before the start of treatment and after 4 wk of
antitubercular treatment. The average plasma concentration of serum copper and zinc in healthy volunteers were 102±20 μg/dL
and 96±18 μg/dL respectively. In tuberculosis patients, serum copper and zinc levels were 123.65±9.98 μg/dL and 64.14±3.97
μg/dL, respectively, before the start of treatment, which came down to 116.23±4.27 μg/dL and 74.31±3.60 μg/dL, respectively,
after 4 wk of antitubercular treatment. 相似文献

Thirty-four infants with acute bronchiolitis and 25 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled to investigate the possible
relationship between serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and selenium (Se) levels and the occurrence and severity of acute bronchiolitis
in children. Serum samples were taken for serum Se and MDA measurements, and the clinical score was assessed at admission.
Blood was taken again from the children with bronchiolitis at 2 mo after discharge from the hospital. Mean serum MDA levels
were significantly higher in patients with acute bronchiolitis than at the postbronchiolitis stage and the controls (4.2±2.5nmol./L,
1.4±0.8 nmol/L, and 0.7±0.2 nmol/L, respectively [p<0.001]). Infants with bronchiolitis had lower mean serum Se levels at the acute stage than after 2 mo (31.7±28.9μg/L versus
68.4±26.4 μg/L, p<0.05, respectively); both of which were significantly lower than the control group measurements (145.0±21.9 μg/L) (p<0.001). There was a negative correlation between serum MDA and Se levels in the patient group (=−0.85, p<0.001). The age of the patient, child's immunization status, parental smoking habit, and family crowding index were not correlated
with serum Se, MDA levels, or clinical score at admission.
In conclusion, increased MDA levels and impaired Se status demonstrate the presence of possible relationship of these parameters
with pathogenesis of acute bronchiolitis, and antioxidant supplementation with Se might be thought to supply a beneficial

Although there are many studies on effect of fluoride on trace elements in experimental animals, few studies exist on serum
trace elements levels in patients with endemic fluorosis. We aimed to determine the serum levels of trace elements including
serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and serum levels of minerals including calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium
(Na), potassium (K) in patients with endemic fluorosis. The study group consisted of 30 patients with endemic fluorosis (17
females, 13 males, mean age 33.53 ± 9.85 years). An age, gender, and body mass index matched 30 healthy volunteers comprised
control group (21 females, ten males with a mean age 33.93 ± 7.39 years). Urine fluoride levels of chronic fluorosis patients
were significantly higher than that of control subjects as expected (1.92 ± 0.10 mg/l vs. 0.41 ± 0.09 mg/l, respectively;
P < 0.001). Serum Cu levels (89.14 ± 16.77 μg/dL vs. 102.69 ± 25.04 μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.017), serum Zn levels (77.98 ± 20.58 μg/dL vs. 94.57 ± 35.87μg/dL, respectively, P = 0.032), and serum Mg levels (1.92 ± 0.18 mg/dL vs. 2.07 ± 0.31 mg/dL, respectively, p = 0.022) was significantly lower in chronic fluorosis patients than in controls. There were no statistically significant
differences between the fluorosis group and control group with respect to serum levels of Na, K, Ca, and P. We concluded that
chronic fluorosis is associated with reduced serum levels of Cu, Zn, and Mg. 相似文献

Serum magnesium concentration was measured in 80 adult patients (age range: 18–40 yr) presenting with acute, uncomplicated
falciparum malaria infection and a control group of 20 age-matched, healthy individuals. The mean serum magnesium concentration in the
patients was 1950.0 ±10.0 μg/dL. The control serum magnesium was 640.0±40.0 μg/dL. This represents an over threefold increase
in serum magnesium levels above normal value, p<0.01. The key pathogenic event in acute falciparum malaria infection is the hemolysis of both infected and uninfected red blood cells. Therefore, the increased serum magnesium
concentration might occur because of the hemolysis arising from erythrocytic merogony because red blood cells contain high
amounts of magnesium. In conclusion, the increased serum magnesium has potential application as a biomarker of acute falciparum malaria infection in adults. 相似文献

A cross-sectional study of serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels in 31 healthy pregnant women and 51 healthy, nonpregnant
controls living in the Mediterranean area of Granada, Spain, was performed. The subjects were divided into two groups: Group
A, consisted of pregnant women in three categories according to the trimester of pregnancy, and Group B consisted of nonpregnant
women acting as controls.
In pregnant women, serum Zn levels were found from 0.300-1.340 mg/L and serum Cu from 0.936-2.304 mg/L, whereas in the nonpregnant
women group, the mean serum levels were 0.947 ±0.265 mg/L for Zn and 1.092 ±0.365 mg/L for Cu. Serum Zn progressively decreased
with gestation. Mean Zn levels were 0.829 ±0.253, 0.846 ±0.329, and 0.620 ±0.142 mg/L, corresponding to the first, second,
and third trimesters of pregnancy, respectively.
Serum Zn concentrations were significantly lower in pregnant women as compared to controls: 0.712 ±0.236 mg/L vs 0.947 ±0.265
mg/L, respectively (p < 0.05).
In contrast, Cu levels increased with period of gestation from 1.053 ±0.498 mg/L in the first trimester to 1.616 ±0.304 mg/L
in the second and 1.689 ±0.344 mg/L in the third. Serum Cu levels in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were significantly
higher (p < 0.05) than those determined during the first trimester and for nonpregnant controls. Both Zn and Cu during pregnancy did
not appear to be dependent on the subject’s age (p > 0.05). 相似文献

It is known that certain trace elements can affect various heart diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the changes
in concentrations of certain serum trace elements in patients with chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Serum analysis of
selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) trace elements was assayed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RHD patients
had significantly lower serum concentrations of Se and Zn than control subjects (p<0.05 and p<0.001, respectively). However, the serum Cu concentration was significantly higher in RHD patients than in controls (1.93±0.59
μg/L vs 1.06±0.29 μg/L; p<0.001). Similarly, the Cu/Zn ratio in RHD patients was higher than in control subjects (4.70±0.92 vs 1.68±0.45; p<0.001). Additionally, no significant correlation was found among these trace element concentrations and the functional capacity
classes (p>0.05). RHD patients had decreased serum Se and Zn element concentrations and increased serum Cu element concentration. We
suggest that Se and Zn deficiency might be contributory factors in the development of rheumatic heart disease, and a high
Cu concentration and a high Cu/Zn ratio might reflect an ongoing inflammatory process in this disease. 相似文献

The quality of the diet of obese children is poor. Eating habits may alter micronutrient status in obese patients. In this
study, we determined the serum levels of selenium, zinc, vanadium, molybdenum, iron, copper, beryllium, boron, chromium, manganese,
cobalt, silver, barium, aluminum, nickel, cadmium, mercury, and lead in obese Turkish children. Thirty-four obese and 33 healthy
control subjects were enrolled in the study. Serum vanadium and cobalt levels of obese children were significantly lower than
those of the control group (0.244 ± 0.0179 vs. 0.261 ± 0.012 μg/l, p < 0.001, and 0.14 ± 0.13 vs. 0.24 ± 0.15 μg/l, p = 0.011, respectively). There was no significant difference between groups regarding the other serum trace element levels.
In conclusion, there may be alterations in the serum levels of trace elements in obese children and these alterations may
have a role in the pathogenesis of obesity. 相似文献

The zinc, copper, and manganese status of seven children with malabsorption syndromes of varied etiology (MVE) and 12 with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) receiving semi-synthetic diets was investigated using serum and hair trace element concentrations, dietary trace element intakes, and anthropometric measurements as the principal indices. The hair zinc levels of both test groups and hair manganese levels of the IEM group were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of their respective healthy controls matched by age, sex, and geographic location, despite comparable dietary zinc and manganese intakes in test and control subjects. Four subjects from the malabsorption and five from the inborn errors group had hair zinc levels below 100 μg/g (range 30–88 μg/g). Of these nine subjects, serum zinc levels were determined for six, and five were less than normal (range 64–74 μg/dL). In contrast, the copper status of the MVE and IEM subjects, as indicated by hair and dietary copper levels, was not lower than the controls. Mean serum copper levels were 136±30 and 171±40 μg/dL for the IEM and MVE groups, respectively. Levels for the MVE subjects were higher than published normal values. The suboptimal zinc and manganese status observed in some of these test subjects probably arose from malabsorption and decreased availability of dietary zinc and manganese. However, the zinc depletion was not severe enough to result in linear growth retardation. 相似文献

Blood was obtained from 564 11-yr-old children who had participated since birth in a multidisciplinary health and development
study. Serum zinc concentration did not differ between the boys and the girls (mean±SD: 91=17 μg/100 mL,n=453). Five-6% of serum zinc values were low; although there was a weak correlation with height, none of the boys with low
values were below the 10th percentile for height for this group. Serum copper concentration (112±24 μg/100 mL,n=454) was unrelated to sex, height, weight, body mass index, socioeconomic status (SES), or iron status. Blood selenium concentration
(49±10 ng/mL,n=564) was lower than previously reported for Dunedin children; it was higher in children in the lower SES categories. The

Wilson’s disease is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper accumulation in various organs, with most common clinical manifestations
such as hepatic, neurological, and renal dysfunctions. Serum copper and ceruloplasmin in Wilson’s disease were significantly
lower as compared to normals, controls, and relatives of Wilson’s disease patients, whereas marked hypercupriuria (145 ± 7
μg/24 h) was observed in Wilson’s children only. A good correlation (r = 0.92) was found between non-ceruloplasmin-bound copper and 24-h urinary copper excretion in Wilson’s disease patients.
Further, copper studies among the different phenotypes of Wilson’s disease revealed substantially low serum ceruloplasmin
and a marked hypercupriuria in Wilson’s disease children associated with renal tubular acidosis as compared to the patients
with either hepatological or neurological manifestations. Serum ceruloplasmin levels in 14 patients of Wilson’s disease were
between 14 and 20 mg/dL. These patients of Wilson’s disease were confirmed by measuring liver biopsy copper, which was about
nine times higher than normal hepatic copper content. During the family screening by copper studies, four asymptomatic siblings
were diagnosed for Wilson’s disease. These subjects were then started on D-penicillamine therapy because presymptomatic treatment

Hot-dip galvanization is a zinc-coating process to protect the metal items from corrosion. Zinc oxide nanoaerosol fume rising from hot metal bath surface in nano dimensions contains the greatest risk for workers in galvanization process. In the present study, it was evaluated whether inhalation of zinc causes any alteration in cellular immunity and tryptophan degradation by measuring neopterin, tryptophan, kynurenine, and zinc levels in 63 male galvanization workers and 23 male office personnel as controls. Serum and urinary zinc levels were found as 14.90?±?0.90 and 102?±?4.7 μg/dL in workers while 12.87?±?1.45 and 75?±?4.2 μg/dL in controls, respectively (both, p?<?0.05). Similarly, the mean urinary neopterin levels and serum neopterin and kynurenine levels were found to be statistically higher in galvanization workers than the controls (all, p?<?0.05). Significant correlations were found between urinary neopterin levels and kynurenine to tryptophan ratio or serum zinc levels. The results indicated cellular immune activation by occupational zinc exposure. It was estimated that neopterin, in parallel with kynurenine pathway, could reflect occupational exposure to zinc nanoaerosols and might be useful in early diagnosis of immune alterations due to nano-scale exposures. 相似文献

Plasma zinc, copper, and parameters of growth were measured in a group of 116 French preschool children, 2–5 yr-old from low-income
households. Participants were selected on the basis of Z-scores of weight for height (WHZ) and height for age (HAZ). Zinc
and copper concentrations of children with growth impairment (GI), defined by a WHZ and/or HAZ< −1 Z-score, were compared
to those of age, sex, and ethnic origin matched controls (WHZ and HAZ >−1 Z-score). Mean (±SD) plasma zinc concentration was
12.58±1.84 μmol/L in the GI group, and 13.27±1.98 μmol/L in the controls. The difference of the means of paired samples was
0.69±2.34, and by pairedt-test the significance reachedp=0.028. This effect was primarily a result of the weight retarded group (WHZ <−1 Z-score,p<0.009) and to the girls (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in plasma copper concentrations between groups. These results suggest the presence
of marginal zinc deficiency in French preschool children with low weight for height Z-scores. 相似文献

Leptin, the obesity gene protein product, is a hormone with multiple physiological functions in the human. However, there
are few reports in the literature on its role in trace element metabolism in the normal population. Therefore, we investigated
the association among serum leptin, zinc, copper, and zinc/copper ratio in 570 healthy men and women aged 15 yr and older.
Serum leptin assay was done with a commercial enzymelinked immunosorbent assay kit; serum zinc and copper levels were measured
by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Serum leptin was found to be positively associated with age (r=0.254, p<0.001), sex (r=0.406, p<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (r=0.553, p<0.001), and serum copper (r=0.419, p<0.001), but negatively associated with the zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.423, p<0.001). There was no significant association between serum leptin and zinc (r=−0.131, p>0.05). When the confounding effects of age, sex, and BMI were removed, serum leptin was still positively associated with
serum copper (r=0.197, p=0.02) and the serum zinc/copper ratio (r=−0.182, p=0.03). These results suggest that copper and not zinc has an effect on serum leptin levels. 相似文献

Serum copper concentration was measured in 80 adult patients (40 males and females each; age range: 18–40 yr) presenting with
acute, uncomplicated falciparum malaria infection and a control group of 20 age-matched, healthy individuals. The mean serum copper concentration was 109.0±40.0
μg/dL in healthy individuals. Both male and female patients were found to have a significantly decreased serum copper concentration
(p<0.05). In the male patients, the mean serum copper concentration decreased by 33.95%, whereas it dropped by 38.53% in their
female counteraparts. A compromised enzymatic antioxidant defense capability, particularly superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity,
has been reported in patients with falciparum malaria infection. Because SOD activity is dependent on copper, the ineffective SOD activity can be related to the decrease
in the concentration of copper during the infection. Low serum copper can also contribute to the ineffective immune response
of the host to the antigenic challenge of the falciparum parasite because copper is also important for normal immune function. 相似文献
