Although populations ofAscophyllum nodosum are harvested commercially, little is known about the effects on demographic vital rates (growth, reproduction, survival). This study examines the effects of harvesting season and harvesting intensity on growth, reproduction and mortality of intact fronds in four size classes and in fronds truncated by the harvest. Knowledge of size-specific vital rates was used to evaluate the response of the population to harvesting.Harvesting season and harvesting intensity did not exert a significant effect on growth. Growth in plots not subject to harvesting was less than in harvested plots. No major differences in growth, reproduction and survival between intact and severed fronds emerged. The number of fronds attaining reproduction was enhanced by increased harvesting intensity and by cutting in summer. Harvesting did not seem to induce breakage, and breakage appeared higher in the uncut plots. Most harvesting treatments did not influence survivorship and survivorship was similar among all size classes. Growth rates were inversely related to sizes of fronds.Assessment of variation across size classes yielded more accurate estimates of growth rates than those of previously used methods. Accurate size class specific-growth rates will be a useful criterion when regulating intervals between harvests. Furthermore, assessment of size-specific vital rates allows identification of the frond size classes most relevant to the preservation of resources. Because of their fast growth rates and abundance, fronds in class 1, and, to a lesser extent, class 2, are responsible for most of the population regrowth after harvest. Large‐fronded tree ferns are critical components of many tropical forests. We investigated frond and whole‐plant allometries for Hawaiian keystone species Cibotium glaucum, for prediction and to compare with global scaling relationships. We found that C. glaucum fronds maintain geometric proportionality across a wide range of plant and frond sizes. These relationships result in strong allometries that permit rapid field estimation of frond size from simple linear dimensions. C. glaucum frond allometries complied with intra‐ and interspecific global trends for leaf area versus mass established for much smaller‐leafed species, indicating ‘diminishing returns’ in photosynthetic area per investment in mass for larger fronds. The intraspecific trend was related to declining water content in larger fronds, but not to a significantly larger investment in stipe or rachis relative to lamina. However, C. glaucum complied with the global interspecific trends for greater allocation to support structures in larger leaves. Allometries for frond number and size versus plant height showed that as plants increase in height, frond production and/or retention progressively declines, and the increases of leaf size tend to level off. These frond and whole plant‐level relationships indicate the potential for estimating frond area and mass at landscape scale to enrich studies of forest dynamics.  相似文献

The negative relationship between stand biomass and plant density observed in terrestrial plants was tested among fronds of a clonal red alga, Mazzaella cornucopiae. Stand biomass and frond density were estimated bimonthly for 1 year on 7 permanent quadrats. A positive linear correlation was found between biomass and density for the whole data set, suggesting the lack of self-thinning among fronds of this intertidal alga at natural densities. Higher frond densities could favor increased water retention among fronds, thus minimizing desiccation during low tides. In this way, stands could maintain higher production of biomass. Fronds may also be cushioned better against wave action at higher frond densities, thus decreasing the detachment of larger fronds. The temporal variation of the relationship between biomass and density was plotted separately for these 7 quadrats. Four quadrats showed positive linear correlation between both variables (the other three quadrats showed non-significant positive linear correlation). Their four slopes are statistically similar to that found for the entire data set. It is possible, then, that there is only one positive slope for the biomass-density relationship in this population. If this is true, standing biomass could be estimated from the density of fronds.  相似文献

A matrix model describes the annual dynamics of a commercial (harvested by plucking) Gelidium sesquipedale population off Cape Espichel, Portugal. Vital rates were measured from a frond population divided into size classes; annual transition probabilities among them were calculated. Transition probabilities under harvest by cutting are derived by assuming that all harvested fronds are cut to the first size class, and none are plucked. Simulations of the annual population dynamics for harvest by both plucking and cutting are used to assess which harvest strategy will optimize yields. Assuming the same efficiency for both strategies, cutting fronds to 7 cm (as mechanical harvesters do) results in a higher population growth rate ( = 1.08 to 1.35) than occurs with the plucking technique ( = 0.85). Simulations of population recovery show the number of fronds in each size class available the next harvest season will be higher when cut than plucked. This model can also optimize yields by predicting the more efficient season opening, and harvesting cutting height.  相似文献

Tissue samples ofMacrocystis pyrifera from 2 sites in southern New Zealand and harvested over a period of 12 months were analysed for alginate content and composition (M:G ratio). Plants were divided into three frond classes of different length and each frond was further separated into age categories of blades and stipes (viz young, mature and old blades; mature and old stipes). Within each size class, younger blades had higher alginate content than older blades. Stipes did not show such variation with age. Alginate from younger blades and stipes had higher proportions of mannuronic acid residues than those from old blades and stipes. The range of M:G ratios for age categories of either blades or stipes from longer fronds was greater than those for smaller fronds. Alginate content and M:G ratios of stipes were always higher than for blades. The difference between M:G ratios of blades and stipes was greater for smaller fronds than for longer ones. Palmaria palmata (Linnaeus) O. Kuntze (Rhodophyta, Palmariaceae) is a seaweed commercially harvested for human consumption. Its population density, size structure, and frond dynamics were investigated from May 1999 to May 2001 at one intertidal locality in the northern coast of Spain, which is within the southern distributional boundary of the species in the eastern Atlantic coasts. The effect of size, age, and the life‐history phase (haploid vs. diploid) on frond growth and mortality were also evaluated. The study was carried out by mapping and monitoring fronds in the field. New fronds (macroscopic recruits or sprouts) appeared in spring, but subsequent mortality of these young fronds and detachment of the host plant led to lower density values in January. Palmaria palmata exhibited a distinctive seasonal growth cycle, with positive net growth from March to August and breakage from August to March. Interannual differences were also detected, with higher net growth in 2000 than in 1999. Net growth was apparently independent of age, reproductive status (fertile vs. reproductive), and life‐history phase (haploid vs. diploid) but was dependent on size, as longer fronds showed minor growth or greater breakage than small ones. Mortality, on the other hand, was more dependent on age than on size in the period analyzed (March–May 2000). Results of the study indicate that both size and age should be included as state variables and temporal changes in transition probabilities considered in the development of demographic models of the species.  相似文献

The effects that different intensities of frond harvesting have on frond regeneration and subsequent production of reproductive structures were investigated for the red intertidal alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (Postels & Ruprecht) Hommersand from British Columbia, Canada. Harvesting was done by pruning fronds in the late spring (when stand biomass is highest) of 1993 at two intensities: total and partial collection of fronds, in this second case leaving all frond biomass less than 1 cm high in place. Holdfasts were not damaged. Total percent cover of thalli, frond density, mean frond length, and stand biomass for these experimental quadrats were statistically similar to values for control quadrats in the spring of 1994. These results suggest that one total harvest of fronds per year, done in late spring without damaging holdfasts, may give the highest sustainable yield of biomass. The effects of harvesting intensity on reproduction were variable and difficult to explain. Neither the appearance nor the abundance of cystocarpic fronds were affected by frond pruning, compared with control areas, but pruning did affect the appearance and the abundance of tetrasporic fronds. Partial pruning resulted in a longer presence of tetrasporic fronds, whereas total pruning was associated with their complete absence. Results are compared with those for the few other species of the Gigartinaceae for which experimental harvesting has been done. Studies on the ecological impacts of non‐timber forest products (NTFP) harvest reveal that plants are often more resilient to fruit and seed harvest than to bark and root harvest. Several studies indicate that sustainable fruit harvesting limits can be set very high (>80% fruit harvesting intensity). For species with clonal and sexual reproduction, understanding how fruit harvest affects clonal reproduction can shed light on the genetic risks and sustainability of NTFP harvest. We studied 18 populations of a gallery forest tree, Pentadesma butyracea (Clusiaceae), to test the impact of fruits harvest, climate and habitat size (gallery forest width) on the frequency of sexual or clonal recruitment in Benin, West Africa. We sampled populations in two ecological regions (Sudanian and Sudano‐Guinean) and in each region, we selected sites with low, moderate and high fruit harvesting intensities. These populations were selected in gallery forests with varying width to sample the natural variation in P. butyracea habitat size. Heavily harvested populations produced significantly less seedlings but had the highest density and proportion of clonal offspring. Our study suggests that for plant species with dual reproductive strategy (via seeds and clonal), fruit harvesting and associated disturbances that come with it can lead to an increase in the proportion of clonal offspring. This raises the issue that excessive fruit harvest by increasing the proportion of clonal offspring to the detriment of seed originated offspring may lead to a reduction in genetic diversity with consequence on harvested species capability to withstand environmental stochasticity.  相似文献

Reiteration is a widespread component of plant growth whose evolutionary importance in ferns is not recognized widely. We introduce and discuss the growth architecture of Kaplanopteris clavata, a fossil filicalean fern from the Pennsylvanian (ca. 305 million yeas old), focusing on types of reiteration exhibited by this species and on the adaptive and phylogenetic significance of reiteration for ferns in general. Kaplanopteris clavata combines two types of reiterative growth where growth modules are borne on fronds: (1) entire fronds derived from primary pinnae, and (2) epiphyllous plantlets. This combination of reiterative pathways, unique among fossil and living ferns, allowed K. clavata to explore ecospace through an opportunistic combination of scrambling, climbing and epiphytic growth. Kaplanopteris clavata underscores the organographic importance of fronds (as opposed to stems) in the adaptive architecture of ferns, emphasizing functional convergences between the different Baupla̋ne of ferns and angiosperms. This unique combination of reiterative pathways is interpreted as a derived condition illustrating the structural and developmental complexity achieved by some filicaleans during the first major evolutionary radiation of leptosporangiate ferns.  相似文献

Summary Larvae of the pyralid moth, Herpetogramma aeglealis, construct feeding shelters upon the Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). Field and laboratory study involving 532 shelters showed that as the larvae mature, they sequentially inhabit approximately 5 shelters of 3 distinct types, constructed at night on different fronds of the same plant. The bundle shelter, simple and ephemeral, is first to be inhabited and constructed. The fiddlehead shelter which houses slightly older larvae strongly resembles contemporaneously emerging frond fiddleheads. The final shelter form, the globe, is a silk-bound ball of leaflets at the frond tip. An individual larva usually constructs 3 globe shelters on different fronds of the same plant before completing its development. As shelter sites, sterile Polystichum fronds are chosen preferentially over fertile fronds. The bundle and fiddlehead shelter forms, less abundant, appear cryptic to humans and perhaps to other vertebrates. The final globe shelter form is larger and quite conspicuous. However, the persistence of empty globe shelters left on the plant as the larva moves to a new one may serve to make searching for larvae less profitable for potential predators and parasites. We suggest that the energetic costs of constructing and occupying multiple shelters may be offset by circumvention of reduced frond palatability and reduced exposure to predators and parasites.  相似文献

It differs fromA. coryphae in having larger ascomata and ascospores, and a peridium of brown-walled cells. Available data on determinants of production in species of Gelidium suggest several general patterns. Species diversity is higher in tropical latitudes, whereas in temperate latitudes the size of the fronds is larger, the species are ecologically dominant and commercially viable. Typically, the species occur on rocky substrate, often on coralline crusts, associated with rapid water movement and arranged in successive belts that can extend down to 25 m depth. Yields vary among species, to a maximum of 2.0 kg m–2 y–1. Growth and production in many species can best be explained by complex interactions between irradiance and nutrients. Temperature can interact synergistically with irradiance, while water movement compensates for nutrient limitations. Increased water movement or the addition of nutrients can prevent, to an extent, bleaching by high light and high temperature. Available data suggest the existence of at least eight biological factors affecting predicted productivity of Gelidium crops: morphology, age of the frond, thallus part, reproductive state, seasonality, crop density, life history phase and geographic and ecological origin of the species. At least four events can remove or destroy Gelidium crops: extreme low tides, storms, grazing and careless harvesting. Only the last-named factor has been analyzed over more extensive experimental periods.  相似文献

We studied the effect of four weeding regimes (weed free, one manual weeding, one manual weeding+atrazine, and a weedy check) on larval density and leaf defoliation in four pear millet genotypes by the larvae of Oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata. Data were also recorded on the extent of larval parasitism under different weeding regimes, and the parasitoids involved. The leaf damage and larval densities were lower in weed free plots as compared to the weedy plots. This was also reflected in grain yield, as maximum grain yield was recorded in weed-free plots as compared to the weedy plots. Seven parasitoids (Cotesia ruficrus, Metopius rufus, Sturmiopsis inferens, Palexorista solemnis, P. laxa, Carcelia sp., and the entomopathogenic nematode Neoplectana sp. were recorded from M. separata larvae, of which M. rufus, Carceliasp., and Neoplectanasp. were the most abundant. Parasitism by M. rufus was greater in plots with a weed cover and least in weed-free plots, while parasitsm by Carcelia sp. was lower in plots with one hand weeding than in weedy plots. Numerically, parasitism by Neopletana sp. was low in plots treated with atrazine, and maximum in plots weeded manually. Therefore, the minimum level of weeding, which does not affect the crop adversely should be undertaken to promote the biological control of M. separata in pearl millet.  相似文献

In South Africa, more than 7000 t (f wt) of kelp (Ecklonia maxima) fronds are harvested annually to feed cultured abalone. Carpoblepharis flaccida, Gelidium vittatum and Polysiphonia virgata are conspicuous red algal epiphytes on older kelps and provide habitat and food for numerous animals. Over 4.5 y, we examined the effects of one destructive harvest of E. maxima on these 3 epiphytes. Two 20 × 20 m plots of kelp with similar epiphyte loads were demarcated. In one, all E. maxima sporophytes with stipes longer than 50 cm were harvested. The other plot served as a control. After 2.5 y the biomass of E. maxima in the harvested plot had recovered to control levels, but the epiphyte load (g epiphytes. Kg kelp−1) was statistically lower in the harvested plot after 2.5 and 3.5 y, and only recovered after 4.5 y. While most commercial harvesters cut through the “heads” (primary blades) of the kelp, effectively killing them, a new, non-lethal method removes secondary blades 20–30 cm from their bases, leaving the meristems and primary blades intact. At 5 sites studied, G. vittatum and P. virgata were found almost entirely on stipes and primary blades, and harvesting only distal parts of secondary blades limited losses to about 50% of C. flaccida biomass. To protect epiphytes, non-lethal harvesting is recommended and permanent non-harvest zones have been established in addition to limiting kelp yields and disallowing harvesting in Marine Protected Areas.  相似文献

Climate and disturbance are considered key factors in explaining plant invasion, mainly by their effect on alien seedling recruitment. We tested whether soil disturbance by digging and altitude, as a sub-set of climate, affected the seedling recruitment of two alien species (Cirsium vulgare and Melilotus alba) in the mountain grasslands of central Argentina. We performed a seed-addition factorial experiment with altitude as a fixed factor co-variable (6 levels), time since sowing (6 levels) as an autoregressive co-variable, and soil disturbance by digging (two levels) and seed addition (two levels) as fixed factors. Seeds of the studied species were sown in replicated undisturbed and disturbed soil plots, in grassland stands located every 200 m from 1200 to 2200 m a.s.l. The number of emerging seedlings at each plot was recorded during a period of 8 months, at intervals of 30–60 days. Seedlings of both alien species emerged at all the studied altitudes, but only the recruitment of C. vulgare increased linearly with altitude. Moreover, the time window of seedling recruitment for this species increased with altitude. Soil disturbance produced a significant decrease in overall seedling emergence of both species; however, an increase in emergence was observed for C. vulgare at an altitude over 2000 m a.s.l. Natural emergence inside control plots without seed addition was only observed for Cirsium vulgare, which indicates that this species was not seed limited. Our results show that altitude and the absence of disturbance do not restrict the recruitment of C. vulgare and M. alba in these natural mountain grasslands. Moreover, these alien species seem to be tolerant to and even favoured by conditions occurring at higher altitudes and in absence of micro-site soil disturbances in the Córdoba mountain grasslands.  相似文献

Annual production of age-1 and age-2 crayfish of three populations in the New River, West Virginia, was quantified and then compared to previously reported harvest of crayfish by a bait fishery. Sampling of crayfish within circular plots and age and growth analyses aided estimation of crayfish production. Orconectes sanbornii sanbornii has a two-year life cycle, and Cambarus sciotensis and Orconectes virilis had three-year life cycles. Production by age-1 and age-2 crayfish (all species) was about 7.0 g live weight m−2 yr−1; almost half of this production was by C. sciotensis. Greater crayfish density and therefore production occurred in riffles than in pools. Annual crayfish harvest by anglers and commercial catchers was equivalent to about 5% of annual crayfish production.  相似文献

Fluctuations in plant and frond characteristics are described for Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) forming a fringing zone in the Falkland Islands. Giant kelp plants were sampled along a transect in the austral autumn (May 1986) and late spring (December 1986) which, according to previous frond weight analysis, were the times when extremes in population parameters were expected. Plant density and holdfast wet weights were similar for both seasons, but plants had more fronds and the fronds weighed more in spring than in autumn. Consequently, in autumn the frond biomass (1·1 wet kg m?2) and productivity (34·1 wet g m?2 d?1) were lower than in spring, when a biomass of 5·0 wet kg m?2 and a productivity of 72·4 wet g m?2 d?1 were recorded. Production of new fronds and loss of old fronds were determined at monthly intervals between April 1986 and March 1987. New frond production rates followed fluctuations in the quantity of light and varied between 0·08 and 0·48 fronds per plant per day. Frond loss rates did not show a seasonal pattern and fluctuated between 0·05 and 0·42 fronds per plant per day. It is suggested that the Falkland Islands Macrocystis population is more stable than most other giant kelp beds at high latitudes, because of the absence of winter storms.  相似文献

Recent global commitments to forest and landscape restoration in the tropics call for new management approaches that benefit both biodiversity and livelihoods of forest‐dependent people. The sustainable use of wild forest products is a promising pathway, but requires clarity about harvested species' demography and harvesters' rights. Here, we explored how the exploitation of fruits of the threatened palm Euterpe edulis, a key fruit source for wildlife in Brazil's globally important Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot, could trigger local community involvement in restoration. This palm has both non‐destructive (fruit) and destructive (palm heart) culinary uses, each with unique biological and resource‐use conditions. We quantified all demographic stages of this species in multiple agroforests, secondary forests, and protected areas to parameterize demographic projections of palm populations, harvest profitability, and fruit provisioning to wildlife under different management scenarios. Field observations showed a clear depression of adult palm populations in protected areas, likely due to palm heart poaching, and of intermediate size classes in agroforests, probably from weeding by farmers. Field data and demographic models reveal that in this region, agroforests and secondary forests can successfully conserve this species while providing lasting profits for farmers under most scenarios. These findings demonstrate a clear case where local stakeholders both contribute to and benefit from restoration through harvest of wild products and also highlight a potential source of income from regenerating tropical forests.  相似文献

We examined the effects of the presence of bird's nest ferns on the species diversity of oribatid mites in the whole forest in terms of the three categories of species diversity (α-, β-, and γ-diversity) in a subtropical forest in south-western Japan. The species diversity (1 − D) of oribatid communities in the ferns was significantly lower than those in bark of trees and the forest-floor litter and soil, and was similar to that in the branches. The oribatid faunas in the litter in and the roots of the fern were more similar to those in both the forest-floor litter and soil than to the faunas in the other arboreal habitats. However, the ferns can be colonized by endemic oribatid species specialized to such environments. The number of oribatid species estimated for a hypothetical stand with no ferns was about 180 species from 80 samples; this value did not differ significantly from that in another hypothetical stand with ferns (ca. 190 species). Thus, the species richness of oribatid communities estimated for the whole forest (the γ-diversity) was not affected by the presence or absence of bird's nest ferns. The α- and β-diversities of oribatid communities on bird's nest ferns were lower than those in other habitats, and they might not dramatically raise the overall γ-diversity of invertebrate communities in the whole forest. The bird's nest ferns, however, can generate a unique habitat for specialized species, and this would help to maintain species diversities of invertebrates at the whole-forest scale in subtropical forests.  相似文献
