Summary The degree of association between cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) and cattle was studied during one summer on Saint Catherines Island, Georgia, USA. Previous work by Grubb (1976) and others indicated that cattle egrets foraging with cattle require fewer steps and less time to catch prey than egrets foraging without cattle and single egrets catch prey at a higher rate than egrets foraging in groups of two or more with cattle. Accordingly, we predicted that when given a choice egrets should forage with cattle rather than alone, egrets should prefer to associate with standing rather than sitting cattle, and single egrets associated with cattle should be more common than expected by chance.In excess of two-thirds of the egrets accompanied cattle. Neither time of day nor month influenced the degree of association, but egrets in forest were more likely to be associated with cattle than egrets in pasture. Standing cattle were more likely to be accompanied by egrets than were sitting cattle. Single egrets occurred more frequently than expected by chance when accompanying standing cattle but not when associated with sitting cattle. Thus, cattle egrets usually distributed themselves among cattle in the way predicted by optimal foraging theory.We dedicate this paper to the memory of Michael D. Sabath  相似文献

Nocturnal observations, radio telemetry and time-lapse camera surveillance were used to investigate visits by badgers (Meles meles L.) to two cattle farms. During 59 half-nights (ca. 295 h) of observation and 17 nights (ca. 154 h) of camera surveillance, 139 separate visits to farm buildings, by at least 26 individually identifiable badgers from two social groups, were recorded. The badgers, which included three individuals infected with bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis), used cowsheds, feedsheds, barns, haystacks, slurry pits, cattle troughs and farmyards to exploit a range of food resources, including cattle feed and silage. Cattle feed was contaminated with badger faeces and badgers also came into close contact with cattle. The minimum number of badgers visiting farm buildings per night was negatively correlated with local 24 h rainfall. We conclude that exploitation by badgers of resources provided by cattle farms constitutes a potentially important mechanism for tuberculosis transmission from badgers to cattle.  相似文献

Increases were recorded of lengths of larvae, nymphs and females of the tick, Haemaphysalis (Kaiseriana) longicornis during feeding on cattle, so that categories could be established for estimating the ages of ticks in natural populations. Most larvae and nymphs engorged in 4 days and females in 5 or 6 days. Four age categories were defined for larvae and 3 for nymphs. The growth of females was variable but 4 stages of physiological development were defined based on changes in their lengths. The lengths were determined of each instar 24 h before detachment to enable estimation of the numbers maturing each day on cattle in the field.  相似文献

Control of tropical theileriosis (Theileria annulata infection) of cattle   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Tropical bovine theileriosis caused by Theileria annulata and transmitted by ticks of the genus Hyalomma may be controlled by one or more of the following methods: i) management, with particular emphasis on movement control; ii) vector control by application of acaricides, preventing transmission of disease; iii) treatment of clinical disease using specific chemotherapeutics; iv) immunization with live vaccines; and v) the use of cattle resistant to ticks or the disease. Of these the most important and effective control method is the use of a live cell culture vaccine attenuated by prolonged culture in vitro of mononuclear cells persistently infected with macroschizonts of T. annulata. This vaccine, used chiefly in susceptible taurine dairy cattle, can now be complemented by using novel chemotherapeutic naphthoquinones--parvaquone and buparvaquone--which are very effective in treatment of the clinical disease in these valuable cattle.  相似文献

Clenbuterol is a highly specific, long-acting (four to eight hours) beta-two sympathomimetic which causes bronchodilation and tocolysis (myometrial paralysis). The tocolytic effect was explored as a means to control parturition and reduce dystocia. Forty-six heifers were injected i.m. with either Clenbuterol or saline placebo in a randomly controlled experiment. Animals were treated when a cervical dilation of five centimeters or more was detected by vaginal examination. Length of first, second and third stages of parturition, ease of parturition, maternal pelvic area and calf viability were compared between treatment groups. Treatment with Clenbuterol increased (P<0.025; 119 vs 468 mins) the time heifers were in Stage I. However, the lengths of Stages II and III, pelvic area at birth and calf viability were not influenced by treatment. Diameter of the cervix at treatment was negatively related to the length of Stage I delay. Pelvic area also significantly affected the length of Stage II. Clenbuterol effectively delays Stage I of parturition with no adverse effects on the fetus or dam.  相似文献

Polymorphism of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in cattle and buffaloes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from two breeds of cattle, viz., [Hariana (Bos indicus), Holstein (Bos taurus)] and Indian water buffalo (Bubalis bubalus), was analyzed using 13 restriction endonucleases which recognized an average of about 40 six-base sites. Polymorphism among cattle was detected with six of these enzymes. The two Holstein differed at six sites, whereas the Hariana breed (Bos indicus) did not show any site polymorphism. Surprisingly, the Hariana type differed by only one site from one of the Holstein types. The total size of buffalo mtDNA was estimated to be 16.4 kb. Polymorphism within the Murrah buffalo breed was observed with respect to aBglI site. Scarcely any of the restriction fragments of buffalo mtDNA matched those of cattle mtDNA.  相似文献

The erythrocyte antigen (Ecl) of cattle has been isolated using DEAE-cellulose chromatography, Sephadex gel filtration, and isoelectrofocusing. The purified antigen is free from hemoglobin and migrates as a single protein on polyacrylamide gels. It exhibits an absorption maximum at 278 nm and has a molecular weight of about 100 000; its isoelectric point is 4.95. The antigen has a carbohydrate moeity and loses its activity after oxidation with periodate. The evidence suggests that it is not a common isozyme, but its exact identity remains unknown.  相似文献

Background

Nellore cattle play an important role in beef production in tropical systems and there is great interest in determining if genomic selection can contribute to accelerate genetic improvement of production and fertility in this breed. We present the first results of the implementation of genomic prediction in a Bos indicus (Nellore) population.

Methods

Influential bulls were genotyped with the Illumina Bovine HD chip in order to assess genomic predictive ability for weight and carcass traits, gestation length, scrotal circumference and two selection indices. 685 samples and 320 238 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used in the analyses. A forward-prediction scheme was adopted to predict the genomic breeding values (DGV). In the training step, the estimated breeding values (EBV) of bulls were deregressed (dEBV) and used as pseudo-phenotypes to estimate marker effects using four methods: genomic BLUP with or without a residual polygenic effect (GBLUP20 and GBLUP0, respectively), a mixture model (Bayes C) and Bayesian LASSO (BLASSO). Empirical accuracies of the resulting genomic predictions were assessed based on the correlation between DGV and dEBV for the testing group.

Results

Accuracies of genomic predictions ranged from 0.17 (navel at weaning) to 0.74 (finishing precocity). Across traits, Bayesian regression models (Bayes C and BLASSO) were more accurate than GBLUP. The average empirical accuracies were 0.39 (GBLUP0), 0.40 (GBLUP20) and 0.44 (Bayes C and BLASSO). Bayes C and BLASSO tended to produce deflated predictions (i.e. slope of the regression of dEBV on DGV greater than 1). Further analyses suggested that higher-than-expected accuracies were observed for traits for which EBV means differed significantly between two breeding subgroups that were identified in a principal component analysis based on genomic relationships.

Conclusions

Bayesian regression models are of interest for future applications of genomic selection in this population, but further improvements are needed to reduce deflation of their predictions. Recurrent updates of the training population would be required to enable accurate prediction of the genetic merit of young animals. The technical feasibility of applying genomic prediction in a Bos indicus (Nellore) population was demonstrated. Further research is needed to permit cost-effective selection decisions using genomic information.  相似文献

Daily oral administration of the progestin Sa 45.249 to 80 cycling heifers, at doses ranging from 6 to 14 mg/day and over varying treatment periods (from 8 to 16 days) resulted in all animals in complete estrus inhibition. Irrespective of the dose and the treatment period used, heat and ovulations — as judged by the corpora lutea which became palpable on day 15 of this cycle — occurred between day 2 and 9 after cessation of treatment in 73 of 80 heifers (91%). Neither the daily dose nor the duration of treatment had any discernible effect on the occurrence of heat.This pattern was confirmed in a pilot field trial. From artificial insemination at the first and second heat after treatment, 16 of 21 treated heifers (76%) and 45 of 55 cows (80%) were pregnant. There was no difference in cyclic plasma progesterone levels between heifers treated for 14 days with 10 mg Sa 45.249 and untreated controls, when treatment commenced either on day 5 or 14 of the cycle, with the exception of the delay in the post-ovulatory rise in the latter treatment.  相似文献

African-derived mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) have been described in South American and Caribbean native cattle populations, which could have been introduced into America from Iberia or by direct importation from Africa. However, the similarity among described haplotypes is not known. We examined mtDNA variation in Guadeloupe Creole and Spanish cattle in an attempt to identify African-derived mtDNA haplotypes and compare them with those previously described. Eleven haplotypes clustered into the European taurine haplogroup (T3), two haplotypes into the African taurine (T1) haplogroup, and three haplotypes into the African-derived American haplogroup (AA). The AA1 and Eucons haplotypes were the most frequently observed. The presence of the AA haplogroup in Spanish cattle confirms historical records and genetic evidence of Iberian cattle as the main source of American native cattle origin. The possible origin of African-derived mitochondrial haplotypes in Iberian and Creole cattle is discussed, and the accumulated evidence does not support a founder effect from African ancestral cattle by direct importations. The presence of taurine AA and T3 haplotypes in Brazilian Nellore may indicate introgression by local European-derived cattle. Data presented in this work will contribute to the understanding of the origin of Guadeloupe Creole cattle.  相似文献
