One foraging strategy that scavengers can employ to discover unpredictable food sources is to associate directly with predators who inadvertently provide food. The common raven, a well known feeding generalist, is also a prominent scavenger of wolves' kills and is found to be in close association with this predator. We tested the hypothesis that ravens preferentially associate with wolves in winter as a kleptoparasitic foraging strategy. The presence, absence and behaviour of ravens was documented during winter observations of wolves, coyotes, Canis latrans, and elk, Cervus elaphus, as well as the landscape in the absence of these three species. Ravens were found to be in close association with wolves when they were travelling, resting and hunting prey. In comparison, ravens showed no significant association with coyotes, elk or areas on the landscape in the absence of wolves. We also compared ravens' discovery success of wolf-killed and nonwolf-killed carcasses and their behavioural response upon discovery. Ravens found all wolf kills almost immediately and remained at the carcass to feed alongside wolves after the death of the prey. In contrast, ravens were less successful discovering experimentally placed carcasses in the same study region, and did not land or feed despite the availability of fresh, exposed meat. Our results show that ravens' association with wolves is not just an incidental and proximate by-product of the presence of fresh meat. Instead, we show that ravens preferentially associate with wolves in both the presence and absence of food, resulting in the discovery of carcasses and suppression of ravens' innate fear of novel food sources. Through this mode of social foraging, ravens may experience increased foraging efficiency in the use of an otherwise spatially and temporally unpredictable food source.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Group-foraging ravens scatter-hoard when they are competing for food and, to some extent, also raid the caches made by others. We investigated the effects of observational spatial memory on individual caching and raiding tactics. With captive ravens, we found visual observation was essential for locating and raiding the caches of conspecifics. Both captive and free-ranging ravens, food cachers as well as potential cache raiders, responded to each other's presence. Cachers withdrew from conspecifics and most often placed their caches behind structures, obstructing the view of potential observers. Raiders watched inconspicuously and kept at a distance to cachers close to their cache sites. In response to the presence of potential raiders or because of their initial movements towards caches, the cachers frequently interrupted caching, changed cache sites, or recovered their food items. These results suggest that ravens, regardless of whether they act as cachers or raiders, are capable of withholding information about their intentions and, hence, manipulate the other bird's attention either to prevent or to achieve social-learning opportunities. Such interactions may qualify as ‘tactical’ deception and may have created a considerable pressure selecting for social cognition in ravens. Jackdaws were conditioned to avoid or escape broadcast jackdaw distress calls. The calls were preceded by 10 s of stimulus light which accompanied the broadcast calls for 4 min. Following this, there was a 2-min time-out period without light or sound, after which the stimulus light was illuminated once again. A response (key peck) during the light or light plus sound periods terminated these. Extinction was accomplished with the stimulus light only. Median latencies of response were compared when calls were broadcast using high and low fidelity equipment. Median latencies to the HF calls were significantly shorter than those to LF calls. A comparison was also made between HF calls and discrete 1 kHz tone segments. The median latencies for the tone segments were longer than those for HF calls. HF jackdaw calls were compared with high pass calls (containing only frequencies above 5 kHz) and with HF herring gull distress calls. In both cases, the median response latencies were similar to those for HF jackdaw calls.  相似文献

A young captive rook, Corvus frugilegus, inserted a plug into a plug-hole in its aviary floor so that a pool of water formed, which was used by all four rooks in the aviary for drinking and bathing. The bird was selective about which, of six holes, it chose for insertion of the tool, choosing the appropriate one with respect to the water source. Days on which attempted or successful tool-use occurred were drier than other days, and days of successful tool-uses were also warmer. Availability of fresh water to the birds did not influence the occurrence of tool-use.  相似文献

Molecular cloning, molecular phylogeny, gene structure and expression analyses of growth hormone (GH) were performed in a passerine bird, the jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos). Unexpectedly, duplicated GH cDNA and genes were identified and designated as GH1A and GH1B. In silico analyses identified the zebra finch orthologs. Both GH genes encode 217 amino acid residues and consist of five exons and four introns, spanning 5.2 kbp in GH1A and 4.2 kbp in GH1B. Predicted GH proteins of the jungle crow and zebra finch contain four conserved cysteine residues, suggesting duplicated GH genes are functional. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that duplication of GH genes occur after divergence of the passerine lineage from the other avian orders as has been suggested from partial genomic DNA sequences of passerine GH genes. RT-PCR analyses confirmed expression of GH1A and GH1B in the pituitary gland. In addition, GH1A gene is expressed in all the tissues examined. However, expression of GH1B is confined to several brain areas and blood cells. These results indicate that the regulatory mechanisms of duplicated GH genes are different and that duplicated GH genes exert both endocrine and autocrine/paracrine functions.  相似文献

Parents of sexually reproducing species should adjust their investment in production of sons and daughters in relation to the relative costs and reproductive value of offspring of either sex. Sex allocation mediated by differential allocation of care such as food provisioning, however, requires that parents can identify offspring sex. We analysed sex differences in offspring begging calls that may serve as a cue for parents to discriminate between sons and daughters. A combination of three sonagraphic variables of begging calls of nestling barn swallows allowed us to classify them according to sex at day 16, but not at day 12 after hatching, suggesting that sex differences in begging calls arise during the nestling period as the time of fledging approaches. Hence, parents may be able to discriminate between sons and daughters by auditory cues, which would enable differential allocation of food between offspring during the late nestling and early fledging stages. The social behaviour of carrion crows varies between populations. In northern Spain cooperatively breeding groups form through delayed natal dispersal and/or immigration of individuals (usually males) into the territory. In this population, carrion crows therefore breed as either unassisted pairs, pairs with nondispersing 1-2-year-old helpers (nondispersers), pairs with immigrant helpers or mixed groups (pairs with both immigrants and nondispersers). We used a microsatellite-based genotyping system to determine the parentage of 57 nestlings (19 broods). Polygamous mating was involved in 26% of the broods and reproduction was shared among group members of both sexes in at least three groups. Immigrants of both sexes can therefore gain access to mates by living in a group, while reproduction is unlikely to involve nondispersers. This implies that nondispersers and immigrants gain different sorts of benefits from group living and helping at the nest. Our genetic data confirmed that nondispersers associated with their parents on the natal territory and therefore that delayed natal dispersal leads to family formation in the carrion crow. Polygamous mating was not found in groups without immigrants, suggesting that, in this population, breeders lose parentage in their brood when sociality is extended beyond the limit of the nuclear family.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. While incubating, brooding and calling their young out of the nest, female mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) utter a species-typical maternal vocalization that their young find highly attractive. To determine the characteristic acoustic features of these calls, we recorded the vocalizations of seven hens in the field. The pre-exodus and nest exodus calls of these hens were similar with respect to frequency modulation, presence of a low-frequency impulsive sound, note duration, and repetition rate. The exodus call differs from the pre-exodus call in having more notes per burst and more harmonics, with a corresponding upward shift in dominant frequency. Repetition rate and frequency modulation may be the critical acoustic features of the auditory basis of species identification in mallard ducklings.  相似文献

The vocalizations from a colony of pygmy marmosets are described along with the context in which each was likely to occur. Three contact-location calls were observed to be similar in physical structure, but each appeared in a different context. The ontogeny of these contact-location calls is presented and demonstrates a greater correlation with stages of parental dependence than with chronological age. Alerting and agonistic vocalizations also are described. Many of the vocalizations show close similarity to those of other species of marmosets.  相似文献
