Apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), is a quarantine pest of apples, Malus domestica Borkhausen, and pears, Pyrus communis L., shipped from much of the United States and Canada. As such, these fruits shipped from infested areas to uninfested areas must undergo a quarantine disinfestation treatment. The objective of this research was to develop irradiation quarantine treatments against apple maggot considering that fruit hosts may be stored under hypoxic or cold conditions when they are irradiated. Hypoxia increased from 30.5 to 35.7 Gy (17%) the estimated dose to achieve 99% prevention of the full pupal stage from irradiated third instars in apples compared with ambient atmospheres. However, 50 Gy completely prevented the full pupa in 22,360 and 15,530 third instars, respectively, irradiated in apples in ambient and hypoxic atmospheres. There was no difference in development to the full pupal stage in apple maggot third instars held at 1 or 24 degrees C when irradiated with 20 Gy. Because the maximum dose measured when 50 Gy was sought was 57 Gy, the latter should be the dose recommended for quarantine disinfestation of host fruits of the apple maggot. The effectiveness of tebufenozide applied against the adult, egg, and larvae of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), was evaluated. Significant reductions in fecundity and egg hatch occurred after 1-h and 24-h exposures of females and 24-h exposures of males-only to residues in plastic plates. A significant reduction in egg hatch was also found after a 1-h exposure of males. The ovicidal effects of tebufenozide in field trials did not significantly differ for eggs laid on residues or treated topically. Corrected egg mortality exceeded 95% for cohorts laid <130 degree-days after sprays were applied. Fecundity and egg hatch were measured after either a 24-h exposure of moths or a 10-d exposure of moths and eggs on apple trees. Significant reductions in both fecundity and fertility occurred compared with an untreated control up to 7 d in the 24-h assays and accounted for 60-70% fewer larvae produced per mated female. The mean numbers of larvae produced per mated female after the 10-d exposure were reduced 100-75% in assays started on day 0-21 after the spray application compared with the untreated control. Fecundity was significantly reduced for 7 d and egg hatch was reduced for the entire 21-d test period in these trials. Residues had a 14-d half-life on apple foliage. Residues applied to foliage or to foliage and fruit did not significantly increase the proportion of uninjured fruit compared with the untreated control in bioassays where neonates were placed on foliage 10 cm from fruit. However, the proportion of injured fruits with shallow stings versus deep entries was higher on the treated versus the untreated plants. Field applications of tebufenozide reduced fruit injury >90% when applied early during emergence. Plots treated after the beginning of egg hatch had a larger proportion of injured fruits with shallow larval feeding.  相似文献

Yearling beef heifers (n = 193) were used to evaluate reproductive performance attained with 2 MGA-PGF(2)alpha synchronization systems. These treatments were compared with an untreated control group. The 14-d MGA heifers were synchronized by feeding 0.5 mg MGA/h/d for 14 d. At 17 d after the last MGA feeding, these heifers were injected with PGF(2)alpha (25 mg, im). Heifers in the 7-d MGA treatment group were fed 0.5 mg MGA/h/d for 7 d and received a 25-mg, im injection of PGF(2)alpha on the last day of the MGA feeding period. Heifers in all 3 treatment groups were observed for estrus every 12 h for 7 d beginning 24 h after the PGF(2)alpha injection. Heifers observed in estrus during this 7-d period were artificially inseminated approximately 12 h after the onset of estrus. The percentages of heifers in estrus during the 7-d synchronized period were 75.4, 56.3 and 17.2% for the 14-d MGA, 7-d MGA and control groups, respectively. The estrous responses were significantly different in each treatment. The percentage of heifers in estrus during the peak 24-h period was higher (P < 0.05) in heifers synchronized with the 14-d MGA system than in heifers synchronized with the 7-d MGA system (75.5 vs 50.0%). The synchronized conception rate of the 14-d MGA heifers was significantly higher (65.3%) than that of both the 7-d MGA (41.7%) and control (45.4%) heifers. Synchronized conception rates were similar (P = 0.79) in the 7-d MGA and control treatments. Synchronized pregnancy rates were 55.2, 32.4 and 15.2% for the 14-d MGA, 7-d MGA and control groups, respectively. Both synchronization treatments resulted in significantly higher synchronized pregnancy rates compared with that of the controls. The synchronized pregnancy rate was higher (P < 0.05) in the 14-d MGA group than it was in the 7-d MGA group. The mean day of conception within the breeding season was 11.5 and 9.3 d shorter in the 14-d MGA heifers than in the 7-d MGA and control heifers, respectively. Our results indicate that using the 14-d MGA system to synchronize estrus in beef heifers results in better reproductive performance than that attained in heifers synchronized with the 7-d MGA system or in control heifers.  相似文献

Egg storage longer than 7 days is associated with negative effects on hatchability traits. Pre-storage incubation has been a suggested method to reduce the negative effects of long-term storage times by enhancing the developmental stage of the embryo and probably reducing the embryonic stress. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of pre-storage incubation and storage time on hatchability characteristics, chick quality and serum thyroid hormones, antioxidative properties and immunoglobulin Y (IgY) concentrations of newly hatched chicks at two breeder flock ages. A total of 8000 fertile eggs were obtained from two different ages of chicken breeder hens (Egyptian local cross, Inshas). Half of the eggs were collected from young breeder hens (28 weeks old) and the other half from old breeder hens (50 weeks old). In each breeder flock age, eggs were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design in a 2×4 factorial arrangement, with two storage periods (4 or 14 days) and four pre-storage incubation durations (0, 4, 6 or 8 h at 37.5°C). At 28 and 50 weeks of age, pre-storage incubation and its interaction with storage period influenced significantly the apparent fertility, hatchability of set eggs and hatchability of fertile eggs and this improvement in hatchability is attributed to the reduction in embryonic mortality (early, intermediate and late). Pre-storage incubation for 6 or 8 h elevated significantly the grade A chicks and reduced the grade B chicks in comparison with non-heated controls. Interestingly, for eggs stored for 14 days, pre-storage incubation for 6 or 8 h enhanced serum triiodothyronine, thyroxine, glutathione peroxidase activity, total antioxidant capacity and IgY concentrations significantly and decreased serum malondialdehyde concentration significantly in the newly hatched chicks. It could be concluded that pre-storage incubation enhanced the hatching results, improved the antioxidative properties, reduced lipid peroxidation and elevated the humoral immunity in the newly hatched chicks. Hence, several benefits might be gained by pre-storage incubation when fertilized eggs will be stored for long periods.  相似文献

One California processor of organic garbanzo beans (Cicer arietinum L.), unable to use chemical fumigants, relies on 30-d storage at -18 degrees C to disinfest product of the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F). To determine whether the storage period may be shortened, the most cold-tolerant life stage of the cowpea weevil was identified. Laboratory studies showed that the egg stage was most tolerant to -18 degrees C and that adults were most susceptible. To examine the efficacy of cold storage disinfestation, bags of black-eyed peas, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., infested with cowpea weevil eggs were buried within garbanzo bean bins placed in a commercial cold storage facility kept at approximately -18 degrees C and removed after 7, 14, and 21 d. Survival was highest in eggs located at the center of the bins and coincided with the slowest cooling rate. Although temperatures within the bins did not reach -18 degrees C until after 14-19 d, egg mortality was estimated to be >98% after just 7 d of exposure. Complete mortality of eggs occurred after 14 d of cold storage. A 2-wk treatment regimen may be sufficient for control of cowpea weevil in organic legumes.  相似文献

The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii can acclimate to a wide range of CO(2) concentrations through the regulation of a CO(2)-concentrating mechanism (CCM). By proteomic analysis, here we identified the proteins which were specifically accumulated under high-CO(2) conditions in a cell wall-less strain of C. reinhardtii which release their extracellular matrix into the medium. When the CO(2) concentration was elevated from the ambient air level to 3% during culture, the algal growth rate increased 1.5-fold and the composition of extracellular proteins, but not intracellular soluble and insoluble proteins, clearly changed. Proteomic analysis data showed that the levels of 22 of 129 extracellular proteins increased for 1 and 3 d and such multiple high-CO(2)-inducible proteins include gametogenesis-related proteins and hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins. However, we could not prove the induction of gametogenesis under high-CO(2) conditions, suggesting that the inductive signal might be incomplete, not strong enough or that only high-CO(2) conditions might be not sufficient for the cell stage to proceed to the formation of sexually active gametes. However, these gametogenesis-related proteins and/or hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins may have novel roles outside the cell under high-CO(2) conditions.  相似文献

Incidental transport of arthropods on plant material can be a significant mode of pest entry into greenhouses. We evaluated the use of controlled atmosphere treatments as a potential way to eliminate arthropod pests on plant propagules (i.e., cuttings or small rooted plants). Lethal exposures to CO2 or N2 were determined for common greenhouse pests including fungus gnat larvae, Bradysia sp.; green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer); sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia sp.; twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch; and western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande). We also studied the effect of pest species, life stage, and presence or absence of plants on efficacy of modified atmosphere treatments. Finally, effects of modified atmospheres on plant quality were evaluated for several bedding plant species including begonia, Begonia semperflorens-cultorum Hort. 'Cocktail Series', chrysanthemum, Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev., geranium, Pelargonium X hortorum L.H. Bailey, and impatiens, Impatiens wallerana Hook f., and among cultivars of geranium and chrysanthemum. Exposure for 12-18 h to >99% N2 or CO2 caused complete mortality of aphids, mites, thrips, and whiteflies. Fungus gnat larvae were more tolerant of hypoxic conditions. Adult mites and eggs were equally susceptible. For most pests, there was no difference in response to atmospheres modified by CO2 or N2. However, there was variation in response among plant species and cultivars, with effects ranging from delayed flowering to mortality. Despite the possibility of adverse effects on some plants, this work indicates that use of modified atmospheres has potential to eliminate arthropod pests on plant propagules before they are introduced into greenhouses.  相似文献

Single-rooted soybean leaves were used to investigate the suppression of photosynthesis through end-product inhibition during acclimation to CO(2 )enrichment. The photosynthetic activity was greater in leaves cultured at a CO(2) partial pressure of 70 Pa (high-CO(2)) than that in the leaves cultured at 35 Pa CO(2) (control) during the initial exposure to CO(2) enrichment but then decreased rapidly with a large accumulation of starch, to well below the level of the control leaves. The response curve of photosynthesis (A) to the intercellular CO(2) concentration (Ci) in the high-CO(2) leaves cultured long-term exhibited a significantly low initial gradient. However, on exposure to darkness for 48 h, the initial gradient of the A to Ci curve and rate of photosynthesis were completely restored, and almost all of the accumulated starch was expended. The ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPcase) content and activation ratio in the high-CO(2) leaves remained high and roughly constant during the experiment, and were unchanged by the exposure, while this enzyme was slightly inactivated or inhibited after long-term exposure to CO(2) enrichment. The lower rate of photosynthesis in the high-CO(2) leaves could be linearly increased to a rate approaching the control level by increasing the external atmospheric [CO(2)], which thereby compensated for a reduced CO(2) transfer diffusion from the intercellular space to the stroma in chloroplasts. It is consequently concluded that, during the acclimation to CO(2 )enrichment, the suppression of photosynthesis through end-product inhibition was mainly caused by a lowering of the carboxylation efficiency of RuBPcase due to hindrance of CO(2) diffusion from the intercellular space to the stroma in chloroplasts brought about by the large accumulation of starch.  相似文献

主要探讨冬枣(Ziziphus jujuba Mill. cv Dongzao)在-1 C的动态气调(CA-Ⅰ, 70% O2 0% CO2处理7天,然后转入5% O2 0% CO2中)、普通气调(CA-II, 5% O2 0% CO2;CA-III, 10% O2 0% CO2)及普通冷藏和常温(25C)等条件下,果实发病率、色素、可溶性固形物、可滴定酸、乙醇和乙酸乙酯含量等的变化。结果表明:与普通冷藏相比,气调贮藏能减缓果实的腐烂,抑制色素的分解和减少果肉中乙醇、乙酸乙酯的含量。动态高氧处理能有效地保持果实的颜色,抑制色素降解及果皮褐变。CA-Ⅲ (10% O2 0% CO2)能有效地减少果肉乙醇的含量而CA-Ⅱ(5% O2 0% CO2)能有效地减少果肉乙酸乙酯的含量。气调贮藏的果实可滴定酸及可溶性固形物含量与其他处理的果实没有明显的差异。  相似文献

The effects of exposing meat-type breeder eggs to magnetic field (MF) before incubation on hatchability traits (percents of hatchability and hatchability failures of eggs), chick weight at hatch, and post-hatch performance (weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR)) from 1 to 39 d of age were investigated. Eggs from a Ross flock at 38 weeks of age were exposed to MF of 18 Gauss (1.8 mT) at 50 Hz for 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 min (MF0, MF15, MF30, MF45, MF60, and MF75) before incubation.Exposing eggs to MF did not influence hatchability of eggs and chick weight at hatch. However, chickens of MF60 and MF75 treatments had lower weight gain and feed intake than those of the non-exposed treatment at 39 d of age. MF exposure of eggs did not influence FCR of chickens between 1 and 21 d of age, but tended to increase FCR, albeit non-significantly, between 22 and 39 d of age.It is concluded that exposing meat-type breeder eggs to MF of 18 Gauss (1.8 mT) at 50 Hz for up to 75 min did not influence hatchability traits and chick weight at hatch. However, MF exposure of eggs for 60 and 75 min reduced body weight gain and feed intake of chickens over the 39-d experimental period.  相似文献

Process-based population models need sound and comprehensive data on an animal's response to climatic factors if they are to function reliably under a wide range of climatic conditions. To this end, different aged egg masses of the livestock tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, were either desiccated in atmospheres with saturation deficits of 5, 10, 15 or 20 mmHg at 20 or 26 degrees C, or chilled at temperatures of 5, 10 or 14 degrees C with a saturation deficit of 1 mmHg for varying periods. The survival rate of the eggs through to hatching was related to the initial age of the eggs, the severity of the treatments and the duration of exposure. We established a relationship between desiccation and weight loss of eggs and, secondarily between weight loss and mortality. Mortality increased with weight loss until it reached 100% when the weight loss was about 35%. Low temperatures were increasingly detrimental to eggs as they reduced from 14 to 5 degrees C. Freshly laid eggs were more susceptible to both low temperatures and desiccation than were older eggs. Larvae emerging from eggs that were stressed by either cold or desiccation lived for a shorter time under optimal conditions than did larvae from eggs incubated under optimal conditions. Larvae from eggs with the same hatching rate had the same viability, whether the stress was induced by desiccation or low temperatures. Models were developed to describe the dynamics of weight loss of eggs with desiccation, the accumulation of cold stress of the eggs, and their effects on egg survival and larval viability. These data provide a sound basis for the development of predictive models for use under field conditions, although the response of different aged eggs to low temperatures was too variable to allow us to develop an accurate model to describe that relationship. Field models will also need to take diurnal temperature fluctuations into account.  相似文献

Glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homolodisca coagulate) and olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) were introduced into unturned, chipped yard waste piles to evaluate their survival with time and depth within the piles. In all three trials, no pests lasted more than 14 d, and in no trial did pests survive more than 4d at the 30 and 100 cm depths. No survivors were found after 14 d in any of the treatments at any depth. Neither of the pests survived 100 cm after 2d. A mathematical model for describing pest survival probabilities is described. The model modifies time according to the Arrhenius equation in order to include heat effects on pest survival and can be used to determine exposure times necessary to eliminate these pests with a determined statistical probability. Model projections suggest that for conditions similar to this study, there is 99% confidence that all glassy-winged sharpshooter eggs would be eliminated from 1000 infected leaves in 6.1d at 15 cm depth and in 4.8d at 30 cm or below. Olive fruit fly larvae at these depths would require 4.8 and 4.1d, respectively, for 1000 infected olive fruits. Projected elimination times at the surface were longer, 6.5d for sharpshooter eggs and 14.3d for fruit fly larvae.  相似文献

A new method has been developed for screening algal photosynthetic mutants. This method uses autoradiography to assess gross photosynthetic 14C fixation by green algal colonies on agar plates and allows the identification of clones that differ in photosynthetic characteristics from wild-type cells. Three wild-type cells, high-CO2-grown Chlorella ellipsoidea, air-grown C. ellipsoidea, and air-grown Chlorella saccharophila, had K0.5 values for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) of 1083, 250, and 50 [mu]M, respectively, and as plaques on agar plates at Chl densities greater than 25 [mu]g cm-2 exhibited relative amounts of 14C fixation of 15, 55, and 100%, respectively. Cells of C. ellipsoidea were mutagenized with x-rays and screened by this method. Growth of C. ellipsoidea in high CO2 represses DIC transport and thus lowers its affinity for DIC. Five of the mutants detected by this method showed high-affinity photosynthesis similar to air-grown wild-type cells even when grown in high CO2. Seven other mutants when grown in high CO2 showed affinities for DIC intermediate between air-grown and high-CO2-grown wild-type cells. The affinities of high-CO2-grown mutants were reflected precisely in their capacities to accumulate DIC intracellularly. These results indicate that the mutants are fully or partially insensitive to the repressive effect of ambient CO2 concentration on DIC transport.  相似文献

The research described in this paper represents a part of a much broader research project with the general objective of describing the effects of elevated [CO2] and temperature on tree growth, physiological processes, and ecosystem-level processes. The specific objective of this research was to examine the below-ground respiratory responses of sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) and red maple (Acer rubrum L.) seedlings to elevated atmospheric [CO2] and temperature. Red maple and sugar maple seedlings were planted in the ground in each of 12 open-top chambers and exposed from 1994 through 1997 to ambient air or air enriched with 30 Pa CO2,< in combination with ambient or elevated (+4 °C) air temperatures. Carbon dioxide efflux was measured around the base of the seedlings and from root-exclusion zones at intervals during 1995 and 1996 and early 1997. The CO2 efflux rates averaged 0.4 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1 in the root-exclusion zones and 0.75 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1 around the base of the seedlings. Mineral soil respiration in root-exclusion zones averaged 12% higher in the high temperature treatments than at ambient temperature, but was not affected by CO2 treatments. The fraction of total efflux attributable to root + rhizosphere respiration ranged from 14 to 61% in measurements made around red maple plants, and from 35 to 62% around sugar maple plants. Root respiration rates ranged from 0 to 0.94 μmol CO2 s-1 m-2 of soil surface in red maple and from 0 to 1.02 in sugar maple. In both 1995 and 1996 root respiration rates of red maple were highest in high-CO2 treatments and lowest in high temperature treatments. Specific red maple root respiration rates of excised roots from near the soil surface in 1996 were also highest under CO2 enrichment and lowest in high temperature treatments. In sugar maple the highest rates of CO2 efflux were from around the base of plants exposed to both high temperature and high-CO2, even though specific respiration rates were< lowest for this species under the high temperature and CO2 enrichment regime. In both species, patterns of response to treatments were similar in root respiration and root mass, indicating that the root respiration responses were due in part to differences in root mass. The results underscore the need for separating the processes occurring in the roots from those in the forest floor and mineral soil in order to increase our understanding of the effects of global climate change on carbon sequestration and cycling in the below-ground systems of forests.  相似文献

Arthropod predators can be produced using alternative prey, but the availability of a constant supply of prey at low cost is necessary to support large-scale production. The use of stored prey can be advantageous for maintaining a constant food supply, but its quality may decline in storage. Thus, we tested the effect of using stored pupae of the alternative prey Tenebrio molitor L. at low temperature (mean of 3.6°C) on the performance of predatory stinkbug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas). The treatment conditions we tested were: pupae stored for exactly 30 days before being used as prey (30-d pupae); pupae stored for either 20 or 35 days prior to the initiation of their use as prey, with continued storage during nymphal and adult stages (20-d+ or 35-d+ pupae); and 2-day-old newly moulted pupae as the control treatment. The duration of the nymphal stage of females and the weight of males were lower for nymphs fed 20-d+ and 35-d+ pupae, respectively. The pupal weight consumed and the rate of eggs and nymphs produced per gram of consumed pupae were also lower for adult females fed 35-d+ pupae compared to females that were fed 2-day-old pupae. These measures, however, were similar for females fed 30-d and 20-d+ pupae. The greatest consumption of pupae was observed for 20-d+ and 35-d+ treatments during nymphal and adult stages, respectively. The use of stored T. molitor pupae supported the development and reproduction of P. nigrispinus, regardless of the period of storage but with variable results among treatments. Therefore, among any of the tested treatments those pupae that were stored for exactly 30 days produced the highest fitness for P. nigrispinus.  相似文献

The susceptibility of various life stages of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), a pest of stored wheat, Triticum aestivum L., to flameless catalytic infrared radiation in the 3-7-microm range was evaluated in the laboratory. Immature stages were collected from flour infested with T. castaneum adults only for 1 d. Stages collected after 1 d represented eggs (collected on day 0); those collected after 7, 14, and 21 d from day 0 represented larvae in different developmental stages, whereas those collected after 24 d represented pupae. Adults (2 wk old) were collected after 42 d. Each of these stages was exposed for 45 or 60 s in 113.5 or 227.0 g of wheat at a distance of 8.0 or 12.7 cm from a bench top infrared emitter. The mean temperatures attained during exposures were measured continuously using a noncontact infrared thermometer connected to a computer. The mean grain temperatures attained increased with an increase in exposure time and were inversely related to distance from the emitter. Grain quantity least influenced mean temperatures attained. Pupae were the least susceptible stage and larvae collected after 7 d were the most susceptible stage. Variation in probability of death of various life stages decreased with an increase in mean grain temperatures attained. All life stages were killed after a 60-s exposure at a distance of 8.0 cm from the emitter in 113.5 g of wheat, where the mean +/- SE temperatures attained ranged from 107.6 +/- 1.2 to 111.4 +/- 0.5 degrees C. Our laboratory results using small grain quantities and short exposure times showed that flameless catalytic infrared radiation can be a valuable tool for managing insects in stored organic and nonorganic wheat.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in steel bins containing 13,600 kg of hard red winter wheat, Triiticum aestivum L. One bin was treated with ozone and the second bin served as a control. Stored grain insects were placed in bins for 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-d exposure periods in sampling tubes to test ozone concentrations of 0, 25, 50, and 70 parts per million by volume (ppmv). Ozone treatments on eggs and larvae of Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) were not effective, but pupae were more susceptible. Sitophilus oryzae (L.) adults were the most susceptible species with 100% mortality reached after 2 d in all ozone treatments. However, some progeny were produced at all concentrations and exposure periods. Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) adults had 100% mortality only after 4 d at 50 or 70 ppmv. No T. castaneum progeny were produced after 2-4 d at 70 ppmv. For Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), 100% mortality was never achieved and progeny were produced at all ozone concentrations. Laboratory experiments, testing the effectiveness of ozone in controlling psocids, were conducted in two polyvinyl chloride cylinders each containing 55 kg of hard red winter wheat. Ozone treatment at a concentration of 70 ppmv was highly effective against adult female Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel and Liposcelis paeta Pearman after only 1 d of exposure. Ethylene can only induce senescence in leaves that have reached a defined age. Thus, ethylene-induced senescence depends on age-related changes (ARCs) of individual leaves. The relationship between ethylene and age in the induction of leaf senescence was tested in Arabidopsis Ler-0, Col-0, and Ws-0 accessions as well as in eight old (onset of leaf death) mutants, isolated from the Ler-0 background. Plants with a constant final age of 24 d were exposed to ethylene for 3-16 d. The wild-type accessions showed a common response to the ethylene treatment. Increasing ethylene treatments of 3-12 d caused an increase in the number of yellow leaves. However, an ethylene exposure time of 16 d resulted in a decrease in the amount of yellowing. Thus, ethylene can both positively and negatively influence ARCs and the subsequent induction of leaf senescence, depending on the length of the treatment. The old mutants showed altered responses to the ethylene treatments. old1 and old11 were hypersensitive to ethylene in the triple response assay and a 12-d ethylene exposure resulted in a decrease in the amount of yellow leaves. The other six mutants did not show a decrease in yellow leaves with an ethylene treatment of 16 d. The results revealed that the effect of ethylene on the induction of senescence can be modified by at least eight genes.  相似文献

Irradiation at a minimum absorbed dose of 250 Grays (Gy) has been approved by the USDA as a quarantine treatment for certain fruits in Hawaii to control four species of tephritid fruit flies. Subsequent research must determine whether this dose is sufficient to control other quarantine pests, such as mealybugs, thrips, mites, beetles, moths, and scale insects, on other commodities with export potential that are approved for irradiation treatment for fruit flies. This study demonstrated that irradiation at 250 Gy caused non‐emergence of eggs and pupae, failure of larval development, and sterility of adults of yellow flower thrips, Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom). Adults were the most resistant stage tested, with 100% mortality at 57, 36 and 30 days post‐treatment for the 250, 350 and 400 Gy treatments, respectively. Untreated adults survived up to 66 days. After receiving an irradiation dose of 250 Gy, no one‐ to two‐day old eggs hatched successfully, while 3–4‐day old eggs hatched but did not develop beyond the larval stage. Of the controls, 96.0% of 1–2‐day old eggs and 75.9% of the 3–4‐day old eggs hatched and survived through pupation. No first or second instar larvae treated with a target dose of 250 Gy were able to pupate. When pupae were irradiated at 250 Gy, 37% emerged as adults and all were sterile compared to 88.3% emergence of controls.  相似文献
