The effect of five chemical preservatives on the micro-organisms associated with sorghum grain and malts was investigated. Sorbic acid, sodium benzoate, nisin, formaldehyde and lime at concentrations up to 500, 100, 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm, respectively did not adversely affect the malting properties of sorghum grain. Only HCHO and Ca(OH)2, each of which prevented bacteria and mould growth at 500 and 2000 ppm, respectively, were sufficiently effective at maximum practicable concentrations to control microbial contamination during malting.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of deoxynivalenol (DON) on cellular and humoral immune parameters in horses. A feeding trial using naturally contaminated oats with high (20.2 mg/kg) and low (0.49 mg/kg) levels of DON was conducted. Two groups of five mares were fed 2 kg oats daily with high or low DON levels for two weeks, using a crossover design with a three-week wash-out period. No adverse effects on general health were observed. Only minor diet-related changes in differential blood counts and serum biochemistry were noted. Serum haptoglobin concentration was significantly elevated after feeding DON (p = 0.04). Lymphocyte subsets (CD4+ CD8+, CD2+, CD21+, MHCII+) and lymphocyte proliferation data (concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin, pokeweed mitogen) were not different between feeding-groups. It can be concluded that daily DON intakes as high as 6.9 to 9.5 mg/100 kg BW appear to have no major impact on the measured immune response of horses, indicating that this species has a high tolerance for DON.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out on a lab supercritical CO(2) extraction system to determine the effects of extraction conditions, including mass ratio of CO(2) consumed to distillers dry grain with solubles (DDGS) extracted, extraction pressure, extraction temperature and time, on yield and composition of extracted lipids. A maximum lipid yield of 150 g/kg DDGS was achieved with a mass ratio approximately 45, an extraction pressure at 27.5 MPa, an extraction temperature at 70 degrees C and an extraction time of 4 h. Under these extraction conditions, the contents of tocols, phytosterols, policosanols and free fatty acids were 0.44, 15.6, 31.2 and 155.3 mg/g in the extract. Experimental results indicated that shorter extraction time and higher flow rate of CO(2) can achieve higher contents of tocols, phytosterols and policosanols but lower content of free fatty acids in the lipid extract. Extraction conditions had no observed effects on the composition of free fatty acids in the extract. Palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids were three main free fatty acids extracted and constituted about 94% of all free fatty acids.  相似文献

The effect of sorghum grain of low (0.32%) and medium (0.94%) tannic acid content was studied in a growth experiment on Large White pigs. Medium tannin sorghum in pig diets had no significant adverse effect on growth, back fat thickness or feed conversion efficiency, but it was associated with a trend towards lower growth rate. All-sorghum diets, with either low or medium tannin, resulted in a significantly inferior feed conversion ratio compared to the wheat control. It was concluded that sorghum grain with up to about 0.94% tannic acid can be used as the main or sole grain in grower pig diets without the risk of any significant adverse effect on growth or back fat thickness.The production of medium tannin sorghum grain in bird-infested areas will depend on the extent to which pig producers would be prepared to use it in pig diets.  相似文献

Cereal grains are conventional energy sources in livestock and poultry rations, while the requisite protein is often supplied by richer sources. Possibilities for the production of crude protein by growing micro-organism on crushed cereal grains was investigated with the aim of obtaining protein-enriched grains for providing both energy and protein in farm animal diets.
Samples of white maize and sorghum were crushed, wetted with distilled water and fermented by Fibrobacter succinogenes, Lactobacillus brevis and a mixed culture of both micro-organisms. Crude protein and either extract values increased with increasing fermentation period. Peak values of both fat and protein were obtained in the fourth week for all fermentations. Highest values of protein were 30·1 and 24·2% respectively for heat-treated sorghum and maize which were both fermented by F. succinogenes. Highest values of fat were 13·1 and 10·6% for maize and sorghum respectively and were obtained from fermentation of heat-treated grains using Lact. brevis. Heat treatment of grains encouraged microbial protein production.  相似文献

The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation was used to produce ethanol from raw starch of damaged quality wheat and sorghum grains by utilising crude amylase preparation from B. subtilis VB2 and an amylolytic yeast strain S. cerevisiae VSJ4. Various concentrations of damaged wheat and sorghum starch from 10% to 30%W/V were used and 25% was found to be optimum for damaged wheat and sorghum starch yielding 4.40%V/V and 3.50%V/V ethanol respectively. Whereas 25% raw starch of fine quality wheat and sorghum grains gave an yield of 5.60%V/V and 5.00%V/V respectively. The process was carried out at 35v°C, 5.8 pH and 200 rpm for 4 days.  相似文献

BackgroundOne of the main problems for the preservation of genetics resources of Agaricus subrufescens is to maintain the viability of the strains because the mycelium is very sensitive to cooling and therefore it ages rapidly.AimsEvaluate the viability of A. subrufescens strains stored as cultures on sorghum grain (spawn) at different temperatures.MethodsEighteen strains of A. subrufescens and three strains of Agaricus bisporus were studied. Spawn's viability was evaluated under the following conditions: (1) control at 25 °C (C), (2) cooling to 4 °C (R) and (3) freezing in liquid nitrogen at ?196 °C (LN). Samples were recovered from week 4 every 2 weeks until week 12 and week 24 in C and R, whereas in LN samples were recovered at 4, 12 and 24 weeks. Viability was evaluated in 50 seeds, by strain and condition, recovering the mycelium in Petri dishes with potato dextrose agar medium (PDA). Mycelium growth was also evaluated on PDA after 14 days of recovery.ResultsMost strains showed 100% viability and they were recovered usually in 1 day. In LN the viability ranged between 84 and 100% depending on the strain, but in some cases recovery took more than 10 days. Mycelial growth decreased gradually over time and although the results show significant differences between treatments C and R, the decline is associated with ageing of the mycelium rather than the treatment itself.ConclusionsCulture on sorghum grain and storage at low temperature is an interesting way to preserve genetic resources of A. subrufescens.  相似文献

Ammonia-treated or untreated barley straw supplemented with urea was given as the only feed to two groups of Friesian heifers weighing approximately 550 kg. The digestibility of dry matter (DM) was 58.8 and 49.9%, daily feed intake was 5.88 and 3.87 kg and daily liveweight change was +324 and -447 g for the ammonia-treated and control barley straw diets, respectively.Anhydrous or aqueous ammonia (NH3) was injected into large round straw bales covered with plastic. The rates of degradation of barley straw in nylon bags and digestibility in vivo were the same for both ammonia treatments. The distribution of N in the bales was also similar and uniform with both treatments. No differences were recorded in the rate of degradation in nylon bags if the plastic was removed 2 or 8 weeks after treatment.Anhydrous or aqueous ammonia or isonitrogenous amounts of urea were injected into large round bags containing whole-crop barley or oats collected with a forage harvester. The digestibility of starch by steers was about 92% for ammonia-treated samples and 78% for the urea-treated samples. Urea and ammonia efficiently preserved the whole-crop materials but untreated control samples and samples treated with NaOH deteriorated during storage.  相似文献

The cytogenetic effect of malathion residues in wheat grains stored for different periods of time (4, 12, 24 weeks) was evaluated in Swiss mice. The studies included: (1) chromosomal aberrations analysis in bone-marrow and spermatocyte cells; (2) chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis in spleen cell culture from mice fed with stored wheat grains. The tested doses were 8.36 (applied dose), 25.08 and 41.80 mg malathion kg(-1) wheat grains. The results demonstrated that the cytogenetic effect induced in different mouse tissues by malathion residues was dose-dependent and increased with increasing of both feeding and storage periods.Feeding mice with wheat grains stored for 4 weeks had a non-significant effect with respect to the induction of chromosomal aberrations or SCEs. Significant chromosome damage and increase of SCEs were observed in mice fed with wheat grains stored for 12 weeks. The maximum effect was recorded in mice fed for 12 weeks with the grains treated with the highest tested dose and stored for 24 weeks. However, mitomycin C i.p.-injected in mice at 1 mg kg(-1) body weight (b.w.) (positive control) induced a higher effect. The percentage of chromosome aberrations reached 13.60+/-0.98, 13.60+/-0.77 and 11.73+/-0.98 (P<0.01) in bone-marrow, cultured spleen cells and spermatocytes, respectively. The significant increase of abnormalities in spermatocytes was seen for univalent formation only, predominantly of the sex chromosomes. The frequency of SCEs was 10.76+/-0.62 per cell (P<0.01) in cultured spleen cells compared with 5.46+/-0.45 per cell for control and 14.66+/-0.54 per cell for the positive control.The obtained results indicate that malathion residues in stored wheat grains have potential genotoxic effect in mice under the conditions tested.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in 1989 to evaluate selected converted sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) accessions for resistance to whorl-stage feeding by larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) and to determine the mechanism of resistance. The sorghum was infested in the whorl 26 days after planting (DAP) in experiment 1 and 33 DAP in experiment 2. In experiment 1, the plant accessions IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, IS12678C, and IS12679C were more resistant (rating <3) to damage by S. frugiperda larvae than the resistant check CIMMYT (CM) 1821 (rating 6.2) at 14 days after infestation (DAI). These genotypes were also more resistant (ratings 4 at 7 DAI and <3 at 14 DAI) than the resistant check CM1821 (ratings 5.6 at 7 DAI and 8 at 14 DAI) in experiment 2. The number of larvae that established/plant on IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, or IS12679C was significantly less compared with establishment on the resistant check CM1821 at 14 DAI in experiment 1 and at 7 and 14 DAI in experiment 2. Resistance in IS7273C, IS7444C, IS12573C, and IS12679C was mainly due to their rapid rate of growth which induced a quick change in the plant morphology from the whorl- to the panicle-stage and did not permit a sustained colonization of larvae. This new type of resistance could be referred to as morphological non-preference as apposed to chemical non-preference where non-preference is due to plant chemical factors. These genotypes had a significantly shorter cycle than the other sorghum genotypes. Host evasion, a type of pseudoresistance, was the basis for resistance in IS7794C and IS7947C. Tolerance was the major mechanism of resistance in the resistant check CM1821.  相似文献

【目的】旨在明确草地贪夜蛾Spodopterafrugiperda在玉米和高粱上的产卵选择性和寄主适合度,为草地贪夜蛾的科学防控提供依据。【方法】在室内25℃条件下,采用叶片饲养观察的方法,比较草地贪夜蛾在玉米和高粱上的产卵量、取食量以及食物利用效率,并构建实验种群生命表。【结果】草地贪夜蛾偏好在玉米叶片背面产卵,其平均卵块数最多,达到(3.40±0.55)块,且平均产卵量达到(346.00±72.55)粒。取食玉米的草地贪夜蛾幼虫存活率显著高于取食高粱的(P<0.05),两者的平均存活率分别为98.89%和86.78%;在取食后5、6和7 d时,取食玉米的草地贪夜蛾幼虫食物利用效率显著高于取食高粱的(P<0.05);取食玉米的草地贪夜蛾幼虫发育总历期显著短于取食高粱的(P<0.05);在生命表参数比较中,取食玉米的草地贪夜蛾种群的净增殖率(R0)显著高于取食高粱的(P<0.05),两者的平均净增殖率分别为(415.93±69.69)和(372.45±34.70)。【结论】草地贪夜蛾在玉米和高粱上均能完成生活史,玉米表现出更高的寄主适合度。但由于草地贪夜蛾在高粱上亦有较高的寄主适合度,且玉米和高粱生育期几近相同,因此在我国西南高粱种植面积较大地区,尤需提前防范草地贪夜蛾从玉米转移至高粱为害的风险。  相似文献

Health status of winter wheat roots and thecomposition of wheat root fungi were studiedover 1996-1999 following the cultivation ofoats in a pure stand and mixed with otherplants as forecrops. The infection of wheatroots by >Gaeumannomyces graminis wasobserved to be largely dependent on the kind offorecrop; the best being oats in a pure stand,and then oats with pea or lupin mixtures. Inthe emergence and shooting phases, saprophyticfungi were dominant, while in the stage of harddough stage mainly pathogenic fungi, especially>G. graminis were common. The pathogenicfungi were mostly represented by >G.graminis and >Fusarium spp., while >Rhizoctonia spp. were much less frequent.The composition of the fungal communitydepended considerably on the forecrop anddevelopment phase of the plant. The kind offorecrop significantly affected the frequencyof infection by >G. graminis. The highestnumber of isolates was obtained from wheat rootsof crops grown after a mixture of oats andbarley.  相似文献

Insect feeding on sorghum was studied in the field and in the laboratory. Quantitative differences in cyanogenesis and phenolic acid content were also measured on the same or simillar plants. High concentrations of cyanide were correlated with a reduction in feeding by grasshoppers and by first-instar larvae of Chilo partellus; high concentrations of phenolic acids were correlated with reduced feeding by various grasshoppers and by the planthopper Peregrinus maidis. Mythimna separata larvae, and adults and nymphs of Rhopalosiphum maidis, were apparently unaffected by these chemicals. Some sorghum cvs which were relatively unpalatable to grasshoppers and to P. maidis had low levels of the test chemicals, so that here some other factor or factors must be involved.  相似文献

Three commercial and six experimental plant growth bioregulators were surveyed for their effect on aphid reproduction when applied to sorghum. Only CCC and PIX had a significant effect on the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum. Application of the commercial bioregulators CCC and PIXR caused about a 50% decrease in aphid reproduction rate when applied to greenbug susceptible sorghum but had little effect when applied to a greenbug resistant sorghum line. Electronic monitoring of aphid probing behavior on CCC treated, greenbug-susceptible sorghum showed a response pattern which was indistinguishable from that normally observed on greenbug resistant lines and was different from that associated with aphid probing behavior on untreated susceptible lines. The isolated pectin content of the CCC treated susceptible sorghum was twice that of the controls and had twice the methoxy content. These results support the argument that pectin is a barrier to aphid-stylet penetration for phloem feeding aphids which probe intercellularly and that manipulation of pectin content and/or structure can be a major factor in host-plant resistance to sap-sucking insects.  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the Alternaria mycotoxin tenuazonic acid (TeA) was evaluated by comparative analysis of naturally contaminated sorghum grains and sorghum-based infant food, using a stable isotope dilution LC-MS assay (SIDA; limit of detection (LOD) 1.0 μg/kg) as the reference method. LODs of the ELISA were 30 μg/kg in sorghum grains and 220 μg/kg in sorghum-based infant cereals. With SIDA, 100% of the samples (n = 28) had been positive for TeA in a concentration range of 6–584 μg/kg (mean 113 μg/kg). The ELISA consistently detected TeA in all naturally contaminated samples at cut-off levels of 30–60 μg/kg (sorghum) and 200–300 μg/kg (infant cereals), as based on corresponding to SIDA values. Although the ELISA was much less sensitive than the SIDA method, it may be useful as a screening method for sorghum and sorghum-based infant foods and can be employed to identify samples containing elevated concentrations of TeA in food, well below the proposed level of concern (500 μg/kg).  相似文献

Consumption of oats has long been known to lower plasma total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, an effect usually attributed to the soluble fibers β-glucans. On the basis of this cholesterol-lowering effect, oats are ascribed cardiovascular health-promoting properties. However, besides cholesterol levels, effects of oats on parameters relating to atherosclerosis development have not been extensively investigated. Since oxidation of lipoproteins and inflammation are characteristics of atherosclerosis in addition to lipid accumulation in the vessel wall, micronutrients in oats (phytochemicals) with antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties may contribute to an atheroprotective action. Here, we summarize evidence on antiatherogenic properties of oats obtained from in vitro assays, animal experiments, and human studies. Possible effects involving anti-inflammatory and antioxidative actions, as well as preservation of endothelial function, are considered in addition to those related to reduction of plasma cholesterol. Since results of in vitro assays with isolated oat components are difficult to compare with effects of whole oats in humans and experimental animals, more observational studies with isolated oat components or fractions of oats are warranted. Also, there is a lack of epidemiological studies focusing on effects of oat intake on the cardiovascular disease panorama.  相似文献

Detached ears of sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) were cultured in complete liquid medium containing Ca2+(0, 3, 10 and 30 mM) and effect of this ion on the conversion of sucrose to starch with respect to the activities of amylases, sucrose synthase, sucrose phosphate synthase and soluble invertases were studied in developing grains. Presence of 3 mM Ca2+ in culture medium enhanced both accumulation of starch and activity of alpha-amylase in grain but without having any influence on the activity of beta-amylase. However, with 10 and 30 mM Ca2+, the accumulation of starch and activities of both amylases decreased and with advancement in culturing period, starch accumulation was further decreased. Irrespective of its concentration, Ca2+ enhanced the activities of sucrose synthase (synthesis), sucrose-phosphate synthase, soluble acid invertase and soluble-neutral invertase. Increase in the concentration of Ca2+ in culture medium was concomitant with an elevation in relative proportion of sucrose in the grain reflecting a net balance in per cent increase with Ca2+ in the activities of sucrose-synthesizing enzymes over sucrose-hydrolysing ones. Based on the results, it is suggested that assimilation of Ca2+ by grain is essential for maintaining high activity of alpha-amylase to generate starch primers required for the conversion of sucrose to starch during grain filling in sorghum.  相似文献
