Conidia of the aphid pathogen Erynia neoaphidis on detached bean leaves and glass coverslips maintained at 20°C and at humidities from 40 to 100% r.h. lost their infectivity for pea aphids at a rate dependent on the humidity. Infectivity declined most rapidly in inocula kept on leaves at 70% r.h. and persisted longest in those at 40 and 50% r. h. That of inocula on coverslips declined most rapidly at 77% r.h. and persisted longest in those kept at 40% r.h. Even after 21 days a little infectivity was retained by conidia stored at 50% r.h. on leaves and 40% r.h. on coverslips.  相似文献

The thermoregulatory responses to 10 degrees C (for 3 h) were investigated in 1) 12 natives from sea level (lowlanders) at 150 m, and on arrival at 3,350 and 4,340 m; 2) 6 of these during a 6-wk sojourn at 4,360 m, and on return to sea level; and 3) 5 natives from each of the two altitudes (highlanders) in their respective habitat, and after descent to 150 m. The cold-induced increase in the rate of O2 consumption (Vo2) of the lowlanders was significantly smaller at both altitudes than at sea level. It did not recover substantially during the 6 wk at altitude, but was restored to its initial rate on return to sea level. By contrast, visible shivering activity was augmented on arrival at altitude. It persisted throughout the 6 wk there, but was greatly depressed on return to sea level, despite the increased Vo2. Mean skin temperatures (Tsk) stabilized in the cold at significantly higher values at altitude. Rectal temperature (Tre) decreased similarly at all altitudes. Vo2 of the highlanders in the cold was significantly greater at sea level than at their resident altitudes, although shivering activity was less intense; Tsk stabilized at significantly lower levels at 150 m than at either altitude. These results indicate that altitude exposure reduces the calorigenic response of man to cold, and that this effect is not moderated by acclimatization to altitude, yet is reversible immediately on descent to sea level. The component of cold thermogenesis which appeared to be reduced by altitude exposure was nonshivering thermogenesis rather than visible shivering.  相似文献

Thresholds for the perception of vibration vary with location on the body due to the organization of tactile channels in hairy and non-hairy skin, and variations in receptor density. This study determined vibration thresholds at four locations on the body with two different contactors so as to assist the identification of the tactile channel determining the threshold at each location. Vibrotactile thresholds at six frequencies from 8 to 250 Hz were measured on the distal phalanx of the index finger, the volar forearm, the large toe, and the heel with two contactors: (i) a 1-mm diameter circular probe with a 1-mm gap to a fixed circular surround (i.e., 7.1-mm(2) excitation area), and (ii) a 6-mm diameter circular probe with a 2-mm gap to a fixed circular surround (i.e., 79-mm(2) excitation area). At all frequencies and with both contactors, thresholds on the fingertip were lower than thresholds on the volar forearm, the large toe, and the heel, consistent with a greater density of mechanoreceptors at the fingertip. Thresholds with the larger contactor were lower than thresholds with the smaller contactor on the fingertip at high frequencies (63, 125, and 250 Hz), on the large toe (except at 250 Hz), on the heel (at all frequencies), and on the volar forearm at 250 Hz. It is concluded that at least two tactile channels (Pacinian from 63 to 250 Hz, and non-Pacinian from 8 to 31.5 Hz) determined vibrotactile thresholds at the fingertip, whereas non-Pacinian channels had a dominant influence on vibrotactile thresholds at the volar forearm. The role of Pacinian and non-Pacinian channels could not be confirmed at the large toe or the heel despite some evidence of spatial summation.  相似文献

Initiation and abortion of spikelet primordia on primary tillers and mainstem were compared for plants of spring barley, Maris Mink, sown on two sowing dates during 1983, in plots at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) and at Long Ashton Research Station (LARS). Sowing date had no effect on the number of spikelets initiated on either mainstem or surviving tillers and many more spikelets were initiated on equivalent stems at LARS than at SCRI but more spikelets aborted at the former site. The final number of spikelets produced was eventually similar. Spikelet abortion was complete by anthesis and coincided with the period of rapid stem and rachis elongation and with the time over which tiller death occurred. Despite the fact that plants at SCRI produced fewer fertile tillers they outyielded those at LARS because much heavier grains were produced on the mainstem and tiller 1 of plants at the Scottish site. An interval of 2 wk between sowing had only small effects on the components of yield.  相似文献

Xanthomonas campestris pv. malvacearum was transmitted from infested seed to the cotyledons of cotton cv. Deltapine 61 seedlings at 28°C and relative humidities (RH) of 90% or 73%. A resident population was present on the first and second true leaves but not on the third true leaf of plants at either RH. There were smaller numbers of resident bacteria on fewer leaves of plants at the lower RH than on plants at the higher RH. Cotton plants grown from infested seed at 25°C and 30°C and incubated at 100% RH at different stages of growth developed bacterial blight on leaves that were in bud or partly expanded when incubated. Resident cells of this pathogen can thus invade susceptible leaves when conditions are favourable for infection. Bacterial blight developed on more plants at 30°C than at 25°C. In a field trial, X. campestris pv. malvacearum transmitted from seed was present as resident bacteria on the third leaf from the growing point during the vegetative development of the plant. Resident bacteria, which infected young leaves during rainy periods, were isolated from the bacterial blight lesions which subsequently developed.  相似文献

First, the enzyme immobilized on cyanide bromide agarose beads (CNBr) (that did not involve all enzyme subunits in the immobilization) has been crosslinked with aldehyde-dextran. This preparation did not any longer release enzyme subunits and become fully stable at pH 4 and 25 °C.Then, the stabilities of many different enzyme preparations (enzyme immobilized on CNBr, that derivative further crosslinked with aldehyde-dextran, enzyme immobilized on highly activated amino-epoxy supports, GDH immobilized on supports having a few animo groups and many epoxy groups, GDH immobilized on glyoxyl-agarose beads at pH 7, and that preparation further incubated at pH 10, and finally the enzyme immobilized on this support directly at pH 10) were compared at pH 4 and high temperatures, conditions where both dissociation and distortion play a relevant role in the enzyme inactivation. The most stable preparation was that prepared at pH 7 and incubated at pH 10, followed by GDH immobilized on amino and epoxy supports and the third one was the enzyme immobilized on glyoxyl-agarose at pH 10.The incubation of all enzyme preparations in saturated guanidine solutions produced the full inactivation of all enzyme preparations. When not all enzyme subunits were immobilized, activity was not recovered at all. Among the other derivatives, only glyoxyl preparations (the most inert supports and those where a more intense multipoint covalent attachment were expected) gave significant reactivation when re-incubated in aqueous medium. After optimization of the reactivation conditions, the enzyme immobilized at pH 7 and later incubated at pH 10 recovered 100% of the enzyme activity.  相似文献

Treatment of cancers with cytotoxic agents such as alkylating drugs often, but not always results in transient to permanent testicular dysfunction. The present study was planned to investigate the effects of dacarbazine [5-(3,3-dimethyltriazeno) imidazole-4-carboxamide] on testicular function in mice. Swiss albino mice (9-12 weeks old) were treated with 0, 5, 25, 50, or 100mg/kg body weight/day dacarbazine (i.p.) for 5 days at intervals of 24h between treatments. Mice were sacrificed on days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 49, and 70 after the last treatment (6 mice/dose/sample time), and the epididymal sperm count, sperm motility, sperm morphology, testicular histopathology (qualitative histopathology, seminiferous tubular diameter and epithelial height), and intra-testicular levels of testosterone and lactate dehydrogenase were assessed. Dacarbazine decreased the body weight only on day 28 at 25mg/kg dose-level, but increased the paired testes weights at 50mg/kg on day 7, at 25-100mg/kg on day 14, and at 25 and 50mg/kg on day 21 (P<0.05-0.01; one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post hoc test). The sperm count was decreased on all sampling days except at 5 and 25mg/kg dose-levels on day 70, but with severe oligospermia on days 28 and 35 (P<0.05-0.001). The sperm motility was decreased at 100mg/kg on days 14 and 21, at 5, 25, and 100mg/kg on day 28, and at all dose-levels on day 35 (P<0.05-0.001). Dacarbazine induced both head and tail abnormalities and some sperms with cytoplasmic droplets, but significant increase was seen in all dose groups on days 14 and 21, and at 100mg/kg dose-level on day 35. Drug-induced epithelial sloughing was seen on days 14-35 and other histopathological changes observed were vacuoles and abnormal cells. The STD was increased at 25-100mg/kg on day 7, at all dose-levels on day 14, at 50-100mg/kg on days 21 and 28, but without any effects on days 35-70 (P<0.05-0.001), and the tubular lumen was found dilated. The SE was increased on days 7, 21 and 28 at 100mg/kg and on day 14 at 50-100mg/kg. Dacarbazine reduced the intra-testicular testosterone level at 100mg/kg on day 7, at 5, 50 and 100mg/kg on day 14, at all dose-levels on days 21, 28, and 35, and at 50mg/kg on day 49 (P<0.05-0.001). The intra-testicular lactate dehydrogenase concentration increased at all dose-levels up to day 35, but without any effect on days 49 and 70 (P<0.05-0.001). There was no particular dose-response of dacarbazine on any parameters tested. The sperm count (except on day 7-positive correlation; Pearson product moment correlation) or sperm motility did not have any relation but increase in abnormal sperms showed negative correlation with decrease in testosterone level on days 7, 21 and 28. Decrease in sperm count was in negative correlation on days 14 and 35, and increase in abnormal sperms showed positive correlation on day 35 with increase in LDH level. Finally, the decrease in sperm motility had no correlation with increase in abnormal sperm shapes. We conclude that dacarbazine is genotoxic and cytotoxic to the mouse testis in a transient fashion, and these effects are exerted along with decrease in testosterone and increase in lactate dehydrogenase levels in the testis.  相似文献

Changes in fitness parameters as a function of colony size (one versus 10 aphids) were measured in two biotypes (RWA1 and RWA2) of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Homoptera: Aphididae), feeding on three cultivars of wheat, Triticum aestivum L., at two temperatures. 'Trego' is a cultivar with no specific resistance to D. noxia, whereas, 'Stanton' and 'Halt' express Dny and Dn4 resistance sources, respectively. Feeding in a group accelerated the development of RWA1 on Trego and Stanton at 20 degrees C, but not at 24 degrees C, whereas grouped RWA2 developed faster than solitary RWA2 on all three cultivars at 24 degrees C, but not at 20 degrees C. Survival (first instar-adult) of RWA2 also was improved by grouping on Stanton and Halt at 24 degrees C, but solitary RWA2 survived better at 20 degrees C on all three cultivars. The reproductive rate of RWA1 was improved by grouping on Trego and Stanton at both temperatures, but only on Halt at 24 degrees C. Lifetime fecundity of RWA1 also was increased by grouping in all cases except for Trego at 20 degrees C. Grouped development increased the reproductive rate of RWA2 on all three cultivars at 24 degrees C, but had no effect at 20 degrees C. Grouped RWA2 developed and reproduced faster than grouped RWA1 on all three cultivars at 24 degrees C. Thus, the fitness of D. noxia was positively correlated with group size during colony establishment, but the effects were sensitive to temperature, being more pronounced at 20 degrees C for RWA1 and at 24 degrees C for RWA2.  相似文献

Totara-matai forests are an under-represented forest type in Westland, relative to their original extent, and require protection and enhancement where possible. This study examined the regeneration of totara on gorse-covered river terraces of the Whataroa and Waiho Rivers, on a site grazed by cattle at Whataroa, and ungrazed sites at both locations. Totara is regenerating prolifically at all sites. Tall-seedling densities were significantly higher at the grazed Whataroa site than at the ungrazed Whataroa site. Conversely densities of small seedlings were significantly higher at the ungrazed Waiho site, with the majority of seedlings occurring on raised surfaces created by rafted logs or occasional silt patches, than at either of the Whataroa sites where seedlings established on the ground. Sapling and tree densities were similar at both Whataroa sites, but significantly greater than at the Waiho site. There was a significant relationship between the density of saplings and trees with terrace age at the Whataroa sites. Gorse cover and seedling density were significantly related at both ungrazed sites, but not at the grazed site. Grazing and gorse cover both appear to have roles in totara regeneration on river terraces. The implications of current management for future forest development are discussed, and it is considered that these areas warrant designation as areas of significant indigenous vegetation because of their conservation potential.  相似文献

This study examined the contribution of the superior ovarian nerve (SON) to estrous responsiveness and ovarian function in cycling rats. Section of the SON was carried out at 1100 on proestrus, and lordotic responsiveness was measured at 1500, 1700, and 2100 on that day and at 0900, 1200, and 1500 on the day of estrus. SON section decreased lordosis intensity significantly at 1500 and 1700 on proestrus and at 0900 on estrus. Pacing of sexual contacts with males was decreased at 2100 in nerve-sectioned (Nervx) animals when compared with sham-operated controls (SHAM). Serum progesterone (P) concentrations were significantly lower in Nervx animals than in Sham animals 30 min after surgery, but were not different between groups at 4.5 hr. Serum estradiol (E2) concentrations did not differ between groups at either time. In addition, Nervx and Sham groups did not differ on measures of pregnancy/pseudopregnancy initiation or on measures of ovarian function 10 days after surgery. These data suggest that the integrity of the SON is necessary for the display of full estrous responsiveness in cycling rats, and suggest that the acute decreases in serum P occurring as a consequence of SON section may be responsible for the deficits seen in Nervx animals.  相似文献

Leucine residues at positions 12, 16 and 19 of salmon calcitonin were systematically replaced by alanine either one, two or three at a time. Substitution of Ala at positions 12 or 16 had the greatest effect on the structure of the peptide and on the ability of the peptide to attain structures of higher helical content in the presence of lipid. Despite the similar effects on the conformational properties, the effects on activity are markedly different for analogs with Ala substitutions at positions 12 and 16. The Ala12 derivatives are much less active while the Ala16 derivatives are slightly more active than the parent hormone. In contrast to the effects of substitutions at these positions, substitution of Ala at position 19 has relatively little effect on activity or on conformation. These results demonstrate that different regions of the calcitonin molecule have different conformational requirements for maximal activity.  相似文献

The effect of ionic strength on the rate constant for electron transfer has been used to determine the magnitude and charge sign of the net electrostatic potential which exists in close proximity to the sites of electron transfer on various c-type cytochromes. The negatively charged ferricyanide ion preferentially reacts at the positively charged exposed heme edge region on the front side of horse cytochrome c and Paracoccus cytochrome c2. In contrast, at low ionic strength, the positively charged cobalt phenanthroline ion interacts with the negatively charged back side of cytochrome c2, and at high ionic strength at a positively charged site on the front side of the cytochrome. With horse cytochrome c, over the ionic strength range studied, cobalt phenanthroline reacts only at a positively charged site which is probably not at the heme edge. These inorganic oxidants do not react at the relatively uncharged exposed heme edge sites on Azotobacter cytochrome c5 and Pseudomonas cytochrome c-551, but rather at a negatively charged site which is away from the heme edge. The results demonstrate that at least two electron-transferring sites on a single cytochrome can be functional, depending on the redox reactant used and the ionic strength. Electrostatic interactions between charge distributions on the cytochrome surface and the other reactant, or interactions involving uncharged regions on the protein(s), are critical in determining the preferred sites of electron transfer and reaction rate constants. When unfavorable electrostatic effects occur at a site near the redox center, less optimal sites at a greater distance can become kinetically important.  相似文献

Summary 4-day cyclic adult female Wistar rats were injected subcutaneously with testosterone propionate on diestrus 1 at 16:00 and on diestrus 2 at 10:00 respectively. Non-injected females served as controls. Autopsy was performed on diestrus 2 at 23:00, and on proestrus at 14:00 and 17:00 respectively. The blue Alcian-PAS staining was used to evidence FSH () and LH () pituitary cells.In control animals and in diestrus 2 injected females only a small number of FSH cells could be detected on diestrus 2 at 23:00. This number increased markedly on proestrus at 14:00 and decreased on proestrus at 17:00. A similar evolution was observed in diestrus 1 testosterone injected females, but the number of FSH cells appeared higher at any stage of autopsy in these females than in diestrus 2 injected females and in control rats.In control females, numerous LH cells were observed on diestrus 2 at 23:00. The number of these cells was diminished on proestrus at 14:00 and still more at 17:00. On the contrary few LH cells were detected in testosterone injected females on the evening of diestrus 2. An increase of these cells occurred on proestrus at 14:00, followed at 17:00 by only a weak diminution as established by comparison with control animals.An inhibition of FSH release and a suppression of the proestrus surge of LH were therefore supposed to cause, on one hand, the slowing up of follicular growth observed in diestrus 1 injected females and, on the other hand, the blockage of ovulation noted in both diestrus 1 and diestrus 2 treated animals.

Many employees in service work are required to work on Saturdays, recovering during work-free Sundays and working again Mondays. We examined the effects of social stressors at work on recovery status at Sunday noon and Monday noon, and investigated if sleep quality mediates the negative effects of social stressors at work on recovery. From Saturday until Monday morning, 41 participants wore actigraphs to measure sleep duration and sleep fragmentation. Social stressors at work were assessed by self-reported questionnaires administered on Saturday. Recovery status was reported Sunday noon and Monday noon. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that social stressors at work were negatively related to recovery status on Sunday and on Monday. Supporting our assumptions, more social stressors at work predicted higher sleep fragmentation in the night to Monday. A mediation effect of sleep quality, however, was not found. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

A genomic screening to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting growth, carcass composition and meat quality traits was pursued. Two hundred nineteen microsatellite markers were genotyped on 176 of 620 (28%) progeny from a Brahman x Angus sire mated to mostly MARC III dams. Selective genotyping, based on retail product yield (%) and fat yield (%), was used to select individuals to be genotyped. Traits included in the study were birth weight (kg), hot carcass weight (kg), retail product yield, fat yield, marbling score (400 = slight00 and 500 = small00), USDA yield grade, and estimated kidney, heart and pelvic fat (%). The QTL were classified as significant when the expected number of false positives (ENFP) was less than 0.05 (F-statistic greater than 17.3), and suggestive when the ENFP was <1 (F-statistic between 10.2 and 17.3). A significant QTL (F = 19; ENFP = 0.02) was detected for marbling score at centimorgan (cM) 54 on chromosome 2. Suggestive QTL were detected for fat yield at 50 cM, for retail product yield at 53 cM, and for USDA yield grade at 63 cM on chromosome 1, for marbling score at 56 cM, for retail product yield at 70 cM, and for estimated kidney, heart and pelvic fat at 79 cM on chromosome 3, for marbling score at 44 cM, for hot carcass weight at 49 cM, and for estimated kidney, heart and pelvic fat at 62 cM on chromosome 16, and for fat yield at 35 cM on chromosome 17. Two suggestive QTL for birth weight were identified, one at 12 cM on chromosome 20 and the other at 56 cM on chromosome 21. An additional suggestive QTL was detected for retail product yield, for fat yield, and for USDA yield grade at 26 cM on chromosome 26. Results presented here represent the initial search for quantitative trait loci in this family. Validation of detected QTL in other populations will be necessary.  相似文献

In experiments with commercial seed of different cultivars at Rothamsted and Woburn, Bedfordshire in 1985 – 88 the severity of black dot on daughter tubers at harvest differed between cultivars. The disease was most severe on Desiree tubers. Amounts of disease were similar at both sites in 1986 – 88 but in 1985 it was more severe at Woburn than at Rothamsted. Disease-free seed of 12 (1987) or 15 (1988) cultivars were planted in experiments at Rothamsted (inoculated with Colletotrichum coccodes or not) and at Mepal, Cambridgeshire (not inoculated) and black dot assessed at harvest in October 1987 and in September and October 1988. There were significant differences in the amount of disease on different cultivars and the order of severity was similar at the two sites, on the two harvest dates in 1988 and in both years. Desiree, Maris Piper, Maris Peer and Record were amongst those cultivars severely affected whereas Cara, Pentland Crown and Romano were least affected. Skin discoloration caused by black dot was more noticeable on white-skinned than red-skinned cultivars and was severe on the Dutch cultivars Estima, Marfona, Santé and Wilja.  相似文献

The onset of maternal behavior in pregnant hamsters was measured by presenting foster pups at 0900 and 2100 hr on Day 15 and at 0300, 0500, and 0700 hr on Day 16 and then at hourly intervals until parturition began. The occurrence of parturition was determined at each maternal test and at 0.5 hr intervals beginning at 0700 hr on Day 16. Nulliparous and primiparous animals became maternal at approximately the same time on Day 16, 2 and 6 hr prepartum, respectively, demonstrating that parturition is not essential for maternal behavior. The second experiment showed that nulliparous females injected with either 1 μg or 10 μgm estradiol-17β (E2), 0.1 mgm progesterone (P), 10 μgm E2 plus 0.1 mgm P, or oil at 1200 hr on Day 15 became maternal at the same time of day (0800–1000 hr) while parturition was delayed 8 hr in females receiving P. The results suggest a dissociation between the regulation of parturition and maternal care and are compared to previous research into the hormonal basis of maternal behavior in rats.  相似文献

When unacclimatized lowlanders exercise at high altitude, blood lactate concentration rises higher than at sea level, but lactate accumulation is attenuated after acclimatization. These responses could result from the effects of acute and chronic hypoxia on beta-adrenergic stimulation. In this investigation, the effects of beta-adrenergic blockade on blood lactate and other metabolites were studied in lowland residents during 30 min of steady-state exercise at sea level and on days 3, 8, and 20 of residence at 4300 m. Starting 3 days before ascent and through day 15 at high altitude, six men received propranolol (80 mg three times daily) and six received placebo. Plasma lactate accumulation was reduced in propranolol- but not placebo-treated subjects during exercise on day 3 at high altitude compared to sea-level exercise of the same percentage maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Plasma lactate accumulation exercise on day 20 at high altitude was reduced in both placebo- and propranolol-treated subjects compared to exercise of the same percentage VO2max performed at sea level. The blunted lactate accumulation during exercise on day 20 at high altitude was associated with reduced muscle glycogen utilization. Thus, increased plasma lactate accumulation in unacclimatized lowlanders exercising at high altitude appears to be due to increased beta-adrenergic stimulation. However, acclimatization-induced changes in muscle glycogen utilization and plasma lactate accumulation are not adaptations to chronically increased beta-adrenergic activity.  相似文献

As part of a study on the effect of low temperature on cellular regulatory processes, a class of lactose-negative mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 was isolated which could use lactose as a sole carbon and energy source at 37 C, but which could not use this sugar at 20 C. The lactose operon of the mutants functioned normally at 20 C. Galactose exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on growth, especially at 20 C. Growth of the mutants on glycerol was stopped at 20 C and slowed considerably at 37 C if galactose was added to the medium. Making the mutants galactose-positive eliminated the cold sensitivity of lactose utilization. One mutant was shown to be galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase-negative, galactose-kinase heat-sensitive, and uridine diphosphate-galactose-4-epimerase-positive. It is postulated that the mutant is able to phosphorylate galactose at 20 C (if only at a very low rate), but lacking transferase it is poisoned by the accumulation of galactose-1-phosphate. At 37 C, galactokinase is nonfunctional and the mutant grows on the glucose moiety of lactose.  相似文献

The root aphid Tetraneura nigriabdominalis (Sasaki) (Homoptera: Pemphigidae) is a pest of many Gramineae species; however, little is known about its biology and relationships with host plants. The objectives of this study were to quantify the effects of temperature on development, longevity, fecundity, and population growth of T. nigriabdominalis and to assess the effects of host plant on development of T. nigriabdominalis. The effects of temperature on performance of this root aphid were determined at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 +/- 1 degrees C on rice roots, Oryza sativa L. Nymphal stages from birth to adult decreased from 46.3 d at 10 degrees C to 8.5 d at 30 degrees C. Aphid survival and development were lowest at 35 degrees C, and no aphid produced progeny at this temperature. Average adult longevity decreased from 23.3 d at 15 degrees C to 8.2 d at temperatures up to 35 degrees C. Average number of nymphs produced per female was highest at 25 degrees C; averaging near 30 nymphs per female, but it dropped to near zero at both 10 and 35 degrees C. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (r(m)) was 0.241 at 30 degrees C. Net reproductive rate (R(0)) ranged from 29.8 at 25 degrees C to 0.2 at 10 degrees C. The generation time (GT) decreased with increasing temperatures from 60.3 d at 10 degrees C to 13.8 d at 30 degrees C. In addition, root aphids reared at 30 degrees C on three host plants [O. sativa, Zea mays L. and Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] revealed that the developmental time of the nymphal stages averaged 6.9 d when reared on O. sativa and 10.7 d when reared on Z. mays. Comparison of the nitrogen content of the three host plants indicated that the root nitrogen content was highest in O. sativa. The effect of nitrogen content on aphid performance, however, is still not clear. Other factors, such as plant secondary chemistry, may play a role in affecting aphid performance.  相似文献
