Primary objective: To carry out a preliminary evaluation of subclinical inflammation and its genetic background in young adults.

Research design: Fifty-five healthy Japanese young adults aged 19-27 years (37 males and 18 females, mean age: 22.3 years), and 58 healthy Japanese adults aged 40 to 60 years (21 males and 37 females, mean age: 51.5 years) were included in this study.

Methods and procedures: We measured plasma high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and screened for the C677T polymorphism of the 5-10 methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR), which is considered a genetic risk factor for atherosclerosis, by HinfI digestion.

Main outcomes and results: Hs-CRP levels of the young adult group were significantly lower than the levels of the middle aged group (0.014±0.030 mg/dl vs. 0.031±0.040 mg/dl, p=0.005). The levels were significantly higher in males than in females (0.028±0.019 mg/dl vs. 0.013±0.010 mg/dl, p=0.008) among young adults. Furthermore, we evaluated the relationship of the C677T genotype and hs-CRP values, but found no association between them.

Conclusions: Although the sample size is limited, our preliminary study demonstrated the profiles of hs-CRP in Japanese young adults. Further investigation will be needed to establish the guidelines for customized school health education using sensitive laboratory and genetic markers.  相似文献

To examine developmental trajectories of trunk fat mass (FM) growth of individuals categorized as either low or high for cardiometabolic risk at 26 years, a total of 55 males and 76 females from the Saskatchewan Pediatric Bone Mineral Accrual Study (1991–2007) were assessed from adolescence (11.5 ± 1.8 years) to young adulthood (26.2 ± 2.2 years) (median of 11 visits per individual) and had a measure of cardiometabolic risk in young adulthood. Participants were categorized as low or high for blood pressure and cardiometabolic risk as adults using a sex‐specific median split of continuous standardized risk scores. Individual trunk FM trajectories of participants in each risk group were analyzed using multilevel random effects models. Males and females in the high blood pressure group had significantly steeper (accelerated) trajectories of trunk FM development (0.61 ± 0.14 and 0.52 ± 0.10 log g, respectively) than those in the low blood pressure group for females in the high cardiometabolic risk group trajectory of trunk FM was significantly steeper (0.52 ± 0.10 log g) than those females in the low cardiometabolic risk group. Dietary fat was positively related (0.01 ± 0.003 g/1,000 kcal) and physical activity negatively related (?0.16 ± 0.05 physical activity score) to trunk FM development in males. Young adults with high cardiometabolic risk, compared to low, have greater trunk FM as early as 8 years of age, which supports the need for early intervention.  相似文献

Two larval instars of Carcinops pumilio (Erichson) were identified from a frequency distribution of the head capsule measurements. The total developmental time from egg to adult emergence averaged 20.5 ± 0.1 days at 30 °C. The 2nd instar was the longest, accounting for 39% of the total development time. The 1st instar larvae sustained the highest mortality of 26% whilst there was no mortality in the pupal stage. The immature stages sustained about 50% mortality before adult emergence. The adult females of C. pumilio can live for 140 days and the rate of survival was high in the young adults but decreased as the beetles aged. Newly emerged adults survived for 25.5 ± 0.4 days without feeding. The sex ratio was 0.48 females: 0.52 males. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was 0.065, the generation time (T) was 50.019 days and the net reproduction rate (Ro) was 20.191.  相似文献

Purpose: To revise and extend the previously published serum cotinine cut offs to classify smokers and non-smokers for US adolescents and adults.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional data (N?=?10171) from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2011–2014 were used to compute serum cotinine cut-offs to classify smokers and non-smokers for US adults aged ≥20?years and 2007–2014 (N?=?4583) data were used to compute serum cotinine cut-offs for US adolescents aged 12–19?years.

Results: Specificities and sensitivities for the cut-offs among adults were ≥95% and ≥75% among adolescents. For adults, serum cotinine cut-offs in ng/mL to classify smokers from non-smokers were 3.3 for the total population, 4.13 for males, 2.99 for females, 4.03 for non-Hispanic whites, 8.85 for non-Hispanic blacks, 0.377 for Mexican Americans, 1.72 for other Hispanics and 1.41 for non-Hispanic Asians. For adolescents, serum cotinine cut-offs in ng/mL to classify smokers from non-smokers were 0.765 for the total population, 1.1 for males, 0.408 for females, 1.2 for non-Hispanic whites, 1.98 for non-Hispanic blacks, 0.215 for Mexican Americans and 0.321 for other Hispanics.

Conclusions: Serum cotinine cut-offs to distinguish smokers from non-smokers for US adults and adolescents were developed.  相似文献

We studied the effect of carbonate depositions covering stone surfaces on the growth of larvae and the biomass of subsequent adults of the grazing limnephilid caddisfly Melampophylax mucoreus (Hagen , 1861) in a laboratory rearing experiment. M. mucoreus is mainly distributed in karst streams characterized by calcium carbonate precipitations (tufa). We reared larvae of M. mucoreus on stones covered by calcareous tufa crusts as well as on stones from which these crusts were experimentally removed to assess the influence on larval growth and the subsequent adult biomass. The rough surface of the covered stones provided a higher complexity of micro‐habitats and supported algal growth compared to the smooth surface of stones without crusts. Larvae of M. mucoreus profited from the enhanced algal biofilm growth on the calcium carbonate precipitation indicated by faster larval growth and higher subsequent adult biomass. Biomass increase of larvae reared on stones covered by tufa crusts exhibited a faster biomass development (0.09 ± 0.015 mg/d) compared to the larvae reared on stones without crusts (0.06 ± 0.002 mg/d). Adult males (5.13 ± 0.25 mg) and females (7.64 ± 0.63 mg) were significantly heavier in the treatment with stones covered by tufa than their conspecifics from the treatment with uncovered stones (males: 4.26 ± 0.25 mg, p = 0.047; females: 4.96 ± 0.47 mg, p = 0.001). Additionally, males from the treatment with crust covered stones emerged significantly earlier (p = 0.003) than the males from the other treatment, whereas no significant difference was found for females. Introduction: Vitamin B12 deficiency causes neurologic and psychiatric disease, especially in older adults. Subacute combined degeneration is characterized by damage to the posterior and lateral spinal cord affecting the corticospinal tract.

Objective: To test corticospinal tract projections using motor evoked potentials (MEPs) by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in asymptomatic older adults with low vitamin B12 (B12) levels.

Methods: Cross-sectional study of 53 healthy older adults (>70 years). MEPs were recorded in the abductor pollicis brevis and tibialis anterior muscles, at rest and during slight tonic contraction. Central motor conduction time (CMCT) was derived from the latency of MEPs and peripheral motor conduction time (PMCT). Neurophysiological variables were analyzed statistically according to B12 status.

Results: Median age was 74.3?±?3.6 years (58.5% women). Twenty-six out of the 53 subjects had low vitamin B12 levels (B12?p?=?0.014).

Conclusions: No subclinical abnormality of the corticospinal tract is detected in asymptomatic B12-deficient older adults. The peripheral nervous system appears to be more vulnerable to damage attributable to this vitamin deficit. The neurophysiological evaluation of asymptomatic older adults with lower B12 levels should be focused mainly in peripheral nervous system evaluation.  相似文献

The circulating blood volume has been measured in 65 healthy Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with the dye T-1824 (Evans blue). The values obtained were 83 ± 13 ml/kg in females, and 85 ± 12 ml/kg in females, almost the same as the figures reported in man.Sex difference of blood volume has been reported to be present in man, but from the data obtained here no significant difference was found in the Japanese monkey.In young monkeys aged from 1 to 5.5 years, the blood volume was 77 ± 5 ml/kg in males, and 78 ± 4 ml/kg in females. The blood volume of the monkey was found to increase with age; a significant difference was demonstrated between adult males and young males.  相似文献

The haematology and the haemoglobin components of 40 captive, adult Blue-naped Mousebirds Urocolius macrourus have been studied. Females show significantly lower values in the number of erythrocytes, in the absolute haemoglobin content and in the haematocrit than males. All haematological parameters (number of erythrocytes and leucocytes. haemoglobin content, haematocrit, MCH, MCHC, glucose, differential count) are within the expected range for birds of this body mass. The blood glucose (mean value: 202, 63±50, 61mg/dl) shows a clear 24-hour cycle: During the night (174mg/dl) the concentration is 25,7% lower than during the day (235mg/dl). With respect to the blood parameters, mousebirds are characterized chiefly by two reptile-like features: the erythrocytes of mousebirds are distinctly larger in length (12,95±1,23 μm). width (7.12±0.75 μm) and in the volume (132.12±20.39 μm3) than those of other birds (see Prinzinger & Misovic 1994). Testing of the haemoglobin components showed only HbA to be present in all mousebirds tested. HbD, a normal component in most birds, could not be found. This is also a typical feature of crocodiles and suggests a primitive characteristic.  相似文献

Summary. The study of the social interactions between host bumblebees and their inquiline species requires rearing them. Here we provide a simple method for rearing of cuckoo bumblebees (Bombus subgenus Psithyrus) in the laboratory. Two bumblebee cuckoo-host systems are used: Bombus (Psithyrus) vestalis hosted by B. (Bombus) terrestris and B. (Psithyrus) sylvestris hosted by B. (Pyrobombus) pratorum. First, the invasion of the Psithyrus female is performed in species-specific host colonies containing approximately 10 young workers. On average, a parasitized colony of B. terrestris produced 90 ± 9 young males and 21 ± 3 young females of B. vestalis, whereas a parasitized colony of B. pratorum produced 16 ± 2 young males and 5 ± 1 young females of B. sylvestris. One week after emergence, Psithyrus virgin females are placed in a flight cage exposed to natural light, with Psithyrus males of other colonies. After successful mating, the females are isolated and overwintered in a cold room at 4°C for 2–4 months. This method enables a year-round and mass breeding of Psithyrus species to facilitate studies of these rare species.  相似文献

Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides Supino, 1897 (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is a three‐host hard tick widely distributed in Sri Lanka. The lifecycle of the R. haemaphysaloides population in Sri Lanka was studied under laboratory conditions using fully engorged females collected from dogs. Larvae, nymphs and adults were reared on New Zealand rabbits. Engorged females weighed a mean ± standard deviation (SD) of 470.1 ± 106.5 mg and laid a mean ± SD of 4067.4 ± 3136.2 eggs within 16.1 ± 3.7 days. The mean ± SD preoviposition period was 6.5 ± 1.1 days. The mean ± SD reproductive efficiency index was 8.5 ± 4.1, and was higher in heavier females (Pearson correlation, r = 0.8; P = 0.001). The incubation period of eggs was shorter at higher temperatures. The majority (86.9%) of larvae successfully moulted after a mean ± SD premoulting period of 7.9 ± 0.7 days following a parasitic period of 3.2 ± 0.5 days. Unfed larvae survived a mean ± SD of 103.4 ± 19.8 days. Nymphs completed the bloodmeal after 3.7 ± 0.9 days, weighed 5.7 ± 1.7 mg and demonstrated a premoulting period of 15.1 ± 1.9 days. Unfed nymphs survived a mean ± SD of 45.8 ± 3.8 days. Heavier nymphs moulted into females, whereas lighter nymphs moulted into males (two‐sample t‐test, P < 0.001). The bodyweight of adult females increased more than 100‐fold after feeding. The lifecycle of R. haemaphysaloides was successfully completed on rabbits within a mean of 91.3 days (range: 69–117 days) under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

Effects of starvation on the suryival period and the respiratory rate in adults of a wolf spider, Pardosa astrigera (L. Koch ), were investigated. The spiders used were divided into four groups: well-fed, starved and two limited food groups; in the latter two, each spider was supplied with one leafhopper every second or third day. Adult males and females of P. astrigera could survive for a long time; 28.8±2.7 days and 54.4±18.9 days, respectively, without any food. The longevities shown here were 73.8% for males and 78.6% for females of those of well-fed spiders, indicating that P. astrigera adults have a strong tolerance to starvation. The respiratory rate of well-fed adults showed no tendency to increase or decrease with their aging; the mean respiratory rates were 4.86×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w. (fresh body weight)/hr for males and 3.80×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for females. The respiratory rates of starved spiders increased during the first two days of starvation but decreased markedly from the third to the twelfth day, and thereafter retained an almost constant level for each sex. The mean respiratory rates after the twelfth day of starvation were 2.49×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for males and 2.76×10−4 mg CO2/mg f.w./hr for females; these values were respectively 48.4% and 63.0% of those prior to starvation. The fresh body weight of starved spiders decreased linearly with time but the rate was small. The respiratory rates of the limited food groups tended to decline with time and thereby their weight losses were minimized. The decrease in the respiratory rate under starvation was considered not to be due to spider exhaustion or senescence but due to an intrinsic change in behaviour and/or metabolism, because when the spiders were supplied with ample food for five days after starvation, the respiratory rate and the body weight rapidly recovered to near the levels prior to starvation. It is suggested that starved spiders use a higher ratio of fat as catabolic substrate than normally fed or satiated ones. Feeding strategies of poikilo-therm predators are discussed.  相似文献

Four size classes of both sexes of laboratory-cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus (post-metanauplii 4.7±0.4; juvenile virgins 8.7±0.7; adults I 13.8±0.9, and adults II 22.07±1.1 mm) were fed five concentrations (20 to 320 ml−1) of Anuraeopsis fissa, or six concentrations (20 to 640 ml−1) in adults I and adults II, for 30 minutes. Post-metanauplii consumed at maximum 66±9 rotifers ind.−1 min.−1 (mean±S.D.) while the largest adult females maximally ingested 347±37 rotifers min.−1. Regardless of predator size and sex, prey consumption was dependent on prey density. Functional response curves either plateaued or declined at 320 prey ml−1 in post-metanauplii, juveniles and adults I, and at 640 ml−1 in adults II. Females consumed c. 40% more prey than males. On a daily basis, adult II females consumed up to 1.05 mg rotifer dry weight (10% of their own body weight) while post-metanauplii consumed up to 0.2 mg DW (100% of their body weight). Intermediate stages had intermediate consumption rates. Filtration rates indicated that a fully grown S. proboscideus may filter as much as 2 1 of water per day, suggesting that fairy shrimps, in their natural environment, may often be food-limited.  相似文献

This study examines the use levonorgestrel (Norplant®‐2) as a means of contracepting white‐faced sakis (Pithecia pithecia). A 70‐mg silastic tubule of levonorgestrel was implanted subdermally between the scapulae in four multiparous and two nulliparous females. Implants remained in the females housed with males of proven fertility for 81 to 734 days. All females experienced low, acyclic levels of estrone conjugates (E1C, < 500 ng/mg Cr) and pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide (PdG, < 1.5 μg/mg Cr) after insertion of the implant. In five females having nine contraceptive bouts, ovulation was completely blocked for the entire duration of Norplant insertion (range: 81–734 days) as evidenced by a lack of cyclic changes in excretory hormone levels. However, one female was observed to have cyclic ovarian hormonal levels 5.8 months after Norplant insertion. Thus, levonorgestrel can be an effective method for blocking cyclic ovarian hormonal changes for 1 year (n = 2) and possibly as long as 2 years (n = 3). This work investigates life‐history traits of the long‐nosed skate Dipturus oxyrinchus, which is a common by‐catch in Sardinian waters. The reproductive variables were analysed from 979 specimens sampled during scientific and commercial hauls. Females (10·4–117·5 cm total length, LT) attained larger sizes than males (14·5–99·5 cm LT). To evaluate age and growth, a sub‐sample of 130 individuals (76 females and 54 males) were used. The age was estimated by annuli counts of sectioned vertebral centra. Four models were used for the length‐at‐age data: the von Bertalanffy, the exponential, the Gompertz and the logistic functions. According to the Akaike's information criterion, the Gompertz model seemed to provide the best fitting curve (L mean ± s.e. : 127·55 ± 4·90 cm, k: 0·14 ± 0·09, IP: 3·97 ± 0·90 years). The oldest female and male were aged 17 (115·5 cm LT) and 15 years (96·0 cm LT), respectively. Lengths at maturity were 103·5 cm for females and 91·0 cm for males, corresponding to 90% of the maximum observed length in both sexes. The monthly distribution of maturity stages highlighted an extended reproductive cycle, with spawning females and active males being present almost throughout the year, as confirmed by the gonado‐somatic index. Ovarian fecundity reached a maximum of 26 yolked follicles with a mean ± s.e. size of 19·7 ± 6·5 mm.  相似文献

Teniasis     
The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of level of the essential elements of copper, magnesium, and zinc status in cases of teniasis in children. Copper, magnesium, and zinc levels were measured in 40 children who were positive for intestinal parasite of Taenia saginata. Scores were obtained for the positives and their 30 age- and sex-matched T. saginata-negative healthy children. The mean concentration of copper, magnesium, and zinc in blood showed no statistically difference in T. saginata-positive children than in their controls both in females (p>0.05) and males (p>0.05). However, a clear numerically decrease was observed especially in magnesium and zinc levels compared to the controls both in females and males. The average magnesium concentration in T. saginata-positive female children and male children were 20±1.9 and 22±2.2 mg/L and it was 27±2.1 and 27±2.3 mg/L in controls, respectively. The mean values of the zinc in blood were 0.76±0.5 and 0.72±0.4 mg/L in T. saginata-positive female children and male children and 0.85±0.3 and 0.81±0.5 mg/L in female and male controls, respectively. No correlation could be demonstrated between age and mean values of copper, magnesium, and zinc in T. saginata-positive females and males and controls (p>0.05). No significant correlation could be found between blood copper, magnesium and zinc levels in T. saginata-positive female and male children and controls (p>0.05). Although there was no statistical correlation observed in copper, magnesium, and zinc levels between patients and controls, there seem to be, especially in magnesium and zinc levels, a decrease, whereas no change was seen in the zinc level in children infected with T. saginata compared to controls.  相似文献

In birds, many behavioral and physiological processes that occur during reproduction show daily rhythms in response to environmental temporal constraints. In this study, the individual daily organization of laying and its genetic determinant in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were analyzed. For this purpose, the oviposition time of 102 randomly chosen females, maintained in long-day photoperiodic conditions (LD 14h:10h) for 1 mon was observed and extreme phenotypes selected. Laying is characterized by two parameters: oviposition interval and laying hour.

The birds showed a specific time of laying during 24 h. All eggs were laid in the afternoon between 6.5 and 14 h after lights on (HALO). Two laying profiles were determined: 20% of females with an oviposition interval greater than 24 h (24.7±0.2 h) (the “delayed” profile) laid progressively later each day until a pause day. The remaining 80% of the females laid at the same time each day, with few pause days and an oviposition interval close to 24 h (24.0±0.2 h) (the “stable” profile). Among the females, showing this last profile, an intra-individual stability and an inter-individual variability of laying hour was established. Two extreme laying phenotypes were then determined: the “early” phenotype (E) for females laying on average between 7.5 and 9.5 HALO and the “late” phenotype (L) for females laying between 12.5 and 14 HALO.

In order to study the genetic basis of the laying hour, three females of each extreme phenotype were selected and crossed with two different males. The E and L females produced 57 F1E and 42 F1L daughters, respectively. F1 females displayed both laying profiles. However, the proportion of females displaying a “delayed” profile was higher in the L line (50%) than in the E line (29.8%). For the “stable” daughters, artificial selection induced an advance in laying hour of 4.7% for the E line and a delay of 4.7% for the L line. Realized heritability was estimated at 0.5. Moreover, the laying hour of the daughters was correlated positively to that of the mothers (N=61;r=0.45). These results support the notion of heritability of oviposition time in Japanese quail.  相似文献

The suitability of Oxydia vesulia transpeneus (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) was assessed as a potential biological control agent of the invasive weed Brazilian Peppertree Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi. Larvae were collected in Brazil feeding on the plant in its native range and colonised in quarantine where life history and host range studies were conducted (27?±?2°C; 50RH). Development time from neonate to adults when fed Brazilian peppertree leaves was 48.0 (±2.2) days for females and 51.0 (±1.3) days for males. Larvae generally required five (occasionally six) instars to reach the adult stage. Females had greater pupal weights 1004.1 (±45.9) mg compared with males 668.5 (±19.7) mg. Larvae were tested on seven non-target plant species from Florida natives, ornamentals, to economic species. Larvae completed development on all but one of these valued plant species. These results suggest that the host range of O. vesulia is not sufficiently specific for release as a biological control against Brazilian peppertree in the USA.  相似文献

Context: In management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), excellent biomarkers for inflammation would be helpful in our practice.

Objectives: Kinetics of c-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) was characterized, using their biologic half-life times.

Materials and methods: Time course of CRP and SAA levels in the successfully treated 36 CAP patients were investigated and their half-life times were determined and compared.

Results & Discussions: SAA and CRP declined in an exponential mean and the biologic half-life times of SAA levels was 34.9?±?28.7?h, significantly shorter than that of CRP, 46.4?±?21.7?h (p?=?0.0014). Conclusion: The kinetic evidence, presented as biologic half-life times of CRP and SAA, helps us make a clinical assessment of CAP patients.  相似文献

Abstract Forest clearance results in a marked change in the dispersion of resources such as food and shelter: from a relatively continuous distribution, to patches and strips of remnant habitat set in a more or less inhospitable matrix. Such changes in the patterns of resource dispersion have the potential to strongly influence the dynamics of social and mating systems of resident animal populations. We studied the den‐use patterns, home range characteristics and mating system of a population of bobucks, Trichosurus cunninghami (Marsupialia: Phalangeridae), permanently resident in linear roadside strips of vegetation in north‐eastern Victoria, Australia in order to gain a greater understanding of the impacts of occupying linear roadside habitats on the behavioural ecology of arboreal marsupials. We radio‐tracked 11 adult females and six adult males and collected 2126 diurnal fixes (mean 125/individual) and 1044 nocturnal fixes (mean 61/individual). Males used significantly more den‐trees (mean 16.5 ± 1.5 den‐trees/individual) than females (mean 7.4 ± 0.6 den‐trees/individual) and had home ranges more than twice the size of those of females (male mean 5.1 ± 0.8 ha, female mean 2.1 ± 0.3 ha). On average, each male's home range overlapped with those of three females; there was little intrasexual home range overlap in either sex. Genetic parentage analysis of all young sampled during the study (n = 22) established that only males that overlapped in home range with females had sired those females' young. All but one male in the study sired multiple young in each of the years they were recorded breeding. These behavioural and genetic data indicate that the roadside population was polygynous, in contrast to the socially monogamous bobuck population we studied in a neighbouring forest patch. These differences in behaviour may reflect patterns of resource distribution in the two habitats.  相似文献

Context: Post-exercise cardiac troponin release has been extensively described in athletic groups but little attention has been given to any role of sex in mediating this phenomenon.

Objective: We compared the release of cardiac troponin T (cTnT) after endurance running in training-experience, biological-age and maturity-matched young male and female runners.

Materials and methods: Nineteen male (training history: 2.3?±?1.0?years; mean age: 16.1?±?1.2?years; Tanner stage: 3.7?±?0.6) and 19 female (training history: 2.2?±?1.0?years; mean age: 15.9?±?1.4?years; Tanner stage: 4.0?±?0.4) runners performed a 21?km run with “all-out” effort. Serum cTnT levels were assessed at pre-exercise (Pre-ex) and at 4?h post-exercise (Post-ex).

Results: At Pre-ex, cTnT concentrations were below the 99th percentile value (10?ng.l?1) in 32/38 runners. Post-ex cTnT increased in all subjects but the response was substantially higher (p?<?0.05) in males [median (range): 210 (20–1360) ng.l?1] than females [median (range): 80 (10–550) ng.l?1]. At Post-ex, 95% (95% confidence interval: 75–99%) of males and 63% (95% confidence interval: 41–81%) of females (p?<?0.05) had cTnT concentrations above the cut-off for acute myocardial infarction.

Conclusions: The present data suggest that post-exercise cTnT elevation occurs in all runners but is augmented in young male compared to female athletes.  相似文献
