A radiobioassay was performed in rats with or without iron depletion to evaluate the iron bioavailability of diets enriched with common beans and with “multimixture”, a nutritional supplement based on parts of foods that are not usually eaten. The full-body 59Fe level was determined after 5 h, the absorbed 59Fe level was determined after 48 h, and the amount of 59Fe retained was determined after 7 days. Iron bioavailability was assessed by the full-body radioactivity of the animals, determined using a solid scintillation detector. The iron bioavailability of common beans was higher in the iron-depleted animals (55.7%) than in the non-depleted animals (25.12%) because of the higher absorption rate in the iron-depleted animals. The multimixture did not influence dietary iron bioavailability. In addition, the iron bioavailability of common beans was similar to that observed in the standard source of iron for Wistar rats. Hence, common beans may be considered an adequate dietary iron source because of its high bioavailability.  相似文献

The AIN-93 reformulation of the AIN-76A rodent diet includes a change in selenium supplement from sodium selenite to sodium selenate to reduce dietary lipid peroxidation. A change to selenate as the standard form of Se in rat diets would render results from previous work using selenite less relevant for comparison with studies using the AIN-93 formulation. To critically examine the rationale for the AIN-93 recommendation, we prepared Torula yeast basal diets patterned as closely as possible after the AIN-93 formulation and supplemented with 0, 0.15 (adequate), or 2.0 (high) mg selenium/kg diet as sodium selenite or sodium selenate. Livers isolated from male Sprague-Dawley rats fed these diets for 15 wk showed no differences in thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances or lipid hydroperoxides measured with the ferrous oxidation in xylenol orange method. Lipids isolated from samples of high-selenate and high-selenite diets showed no differences in conjugated dienes. The addition of selenate or selenite to soybean oil did not result in an altered Oil Stability Index. These results demonstrate that selenate is not less likely than selenite to cause oxidation of other dietary components. Benefits of selenate over selenite in the diets of rodents remain to be demonstrated. Results included in this paper were presented at the meeting of Experimental Biology 98, San Francisco, CA, April 18–22, 1998, and published in abstract form (Moak, M. A., Johnson, B. L., & Christensen, M. J. [1998] On the AIN-93G recommendation for selenium. FASEB J. 12, A824).  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the dietary patterns of adults living in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and their associations with body mass index (BMI). Research Methods and Procedures: A survey was conducted in 1996 in a probabilistic sample of 2040 households. Weight and height were measured and food intake was based on an 80-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were identified through factor analysis. Results: More than one-third of the adult population (20 to 60 years old) was overweight (BMI = 25 to 29.9 kg/m2), and 12% were obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). Three major dietary patterns were identified: mixed pattern when all food groups and items had about the same factor loading, except for rice and beans; one pattern that relies mainly on rice and beans, which was called a traditional diet; and a third pattern, termed a Western diet, where fat (butter and margarine) and added sugar (sodas) showed the highest positive loading and rice and beans were strong negative components. Among men, the Western diet also included deep-fried snacks and milk products with high positive values. The traditional diet was associated with lower risk of overweight/obesity in logistic models adjusted for dieting, age, leisure physical activity, and occupation (13% reduction in men and 14% reduction in women comparing the traditional and Western diets). Discussion: Factors contributing to the effects of the Brazilian traditional diet may include low-energy density, high-dietary fiber content, incorporation of low glycemic index foods such as beans, or a relatively low food variety.  相似文献

Dietary iron overload in rodents impairs growth and causes cardiac hypertrophy, serum and tissue copper depletion, depression of serum ceruloplasmin (Cp) activity and anemia. Notably, increasing dietary copper content to ~25-fold above requirements prevents the development of these physiological perturbations. Whether copper supplementation can reverse these high-iron-related abnormalities has, however, not been established. The current investigation was thus undertaken to test the hypothesis that supplemental copper will mitigate negative outcomes associated with dietary iron loading. Weanling mice were thus fed AIN-93G-based diets with high (>100-fold in excess) or adequate (~80 ppm) iron content. To establish the optimal experimental conditions, we first defined the time course of iron loading, and assessed the impact of supplemental copper (provided in drinking water) on the development of high-iron-related pathologies. Copper supplementation (20 mg/L) for the last 3 weeks of a 7-week high-iron feeding period reversed the anemia, normalized serum copper levels and Cp activity, and restored tissue copper concentrations. Growth rates, cardiac copper concentrations and heart size, however, were only partially normalized by copper supplementation. Furthermore, high dietary iron intake reduced intestinal 64Cu absorption (~60%) from a transport solution provided to mice by oral, intragastric gavage. Copper supplementation of iron-loaded mice enhanced intestinal 64Cu transport, thus allowing sufficient assimilation of dietary copper to correct many of the noted high-iron-related physiological perturbations. We therefore conclude that high- iron intake increases the requirement for dietary copper (to overcome the inhibition of intestinal copper absorption).  相似文献

Diet and obesity, and their associated metabolic alterations, are some of the fastest-growing causes of disease and death in America. Findings from epidemiological studies correlating obesity, the sources of dietary fat and prostate cancer (PCa) are conflicting. We have previously shown that 15% of PB-ErbB-2 x pten+/- mice developed PCa and exhibited increased phosphorylated 4E-BP1, but not the key PI3-kinase intermediary phospho-protein, mTOR, when maintained on unrefined mouse chow. We report herein that 100% of animals fed refined, westernized AIN-93-based diets containing corn oil developed PCa by 12 months of age. Increases in visceral fat and mTOR activation in the tumors were also observed. Furthermore, nuclear cyclin E levels were significantly induced by the AIN-93-corn oil-based diets versus chow. Replacing 50% of the corn oil with menhaden oil, with 21% of its triglycerides being n-3 PUFA’s, had no effect on tumorigenesis, fat deposition, cyclin E or mTOR. Phosphorylated BAD levels were similar in the tumors of mice in all three diets. Our data demonstrated that in the context of our preclinical model, components of crude chow, but not dietary n-3 PUFAs, protect against PCa progression. In addition, these data establish phosphorylated mTOR, nuclear cyclin E and visceral fat deposits as possible biomarkers of increased dietary risk for PCa.  相似文献

The relation between the dietary phytate (InsP6), mineral status and InsP6 levels in the organism, using three controlled diets (AIN-76A, AIN-76A + 1% phytate, AIN-76A + 6% carob seed germ), are studied. AIN-76A is a purified diet in which InsP6 is practically absent. No important or significant differences in the mineral status (Zn, Cu, Fe) of blood, kidneys, liver, brain and bone, were observed, except iron in the brain. Thus, the amounts of iron found in the brain of rats fed AIN-76A + 1% InsP6 were significantly inferior to those found in rats fed AIN-76A diet. The amounts of InsP6 found in organs of rats fed AIN-76A diet became very low or even undetectable while the ones found in rats fed diets that contained 1% and 0.12% (AIN-76A + 6% carob seed germ) InsP6, were considerably higher and similar. Moreover the majority of rats fed AIN-76A diet exhibited calcifications at the corticomedullary junctions, whereas no calcifications were detected in rats fed the other two diets. From these results, it can be deduced that there was no important adverse effects on mineral status as a consequence of the presence of InsP6 in the studied diets. Besides, considering that a 0.12% InsP6 contained in the AIN-76A purified diet through the addition of a 6% of carob seed germ to this diet, produced the same beneficial effects as the direct addition of a 1% of InsP6 and no negative effects on mineral status was observed, it can be concluded that the value of the presence of InsP6 at adequate amounts in the diet is remarkable and must be favourably considered.  相似文献

Nutritional studies in laboratory animals have long shown that various dietary components can contribute to altered gene expression and metabolism, but diet alone has not been considered in whole animal genomic studies. In this study, global gene expression changes in mice fed either a non-purified chow or a purified diet were investigated and background metal levels in the two diets were measured by ICP-MS. C57BL/6J mice were raised for 5 weeks on either the cereal-based, non-purified LRD-5001 diet or the purified, casein-based AIN-76A diet, as part of a larger study examining the effects of low dose arsenic (As) in the diet or drinking water. Affymetrix Mouse Whole Genome 430 2.0 microarrays were used to assess gene expression changes in the liver and lung. Microarray analysis revealed that animals fed the LRD-5001 diet displayed a significantly higher hepatic expression of Phase I and II metabolism genes as well as other metabolic genes. The LRD-5001 diet masked the As-induced gene expression changes that were clearly seen in the animals fed the AIN-76A diet when each dietary group was exposed to 100 ppb As in drinking water. Trace metal analysis revealed that the LRD-5001 diet contained a mixture of inorganic and organic As at a total concentration of 390 ppb, while the AIN-76A diet contained approximately 20 ppb. These findings indicate that the use of non-purified diets may profoundly alter observable patterns of change induced by arsenic and, likely, by other experimental treatments, particularly, altering gene and protein expression.  相似文献

Abstract: There is evidence that dietary lipids and age both influence neuronal membrane composition and receptor G protein-linked signal transduction, but very little information is available on the interaction between these two factors. To investigate this, we obtained striata from 2, 12, and 22-month-old male F344 rats who were fed either a high-cholesterol, high-saturated fat or low-fat diet for 1 month. The striata were assayed for muscarinic agonist-stimulated low-Km GTPase activity using 10?3M carbachol and 10?5M oxotremorine and for KCl-evoked dopamine release enhancement by 10?5M oxotremorine. Membrane cholesterol and phospholipid content and phospholipid class composition were also determined. Mature animals showed significant but divergent changes in GTPase activity and dopamine release for high-cholesterol and low-fat diets: GTPase activity decreased, whereas dopamine release increased in these groups. Alterations in GTPase activity but not in dopamine release were inversely correlated with the cholesterol/phospholipid molar ratio. Old control animals showed reductions in both GTPase activity and oxotremorine-enhanced dopamine release compared with young animals. Whereas none of the experimental diets affected GTPase activity in old animals, the low-fat diet produced a marked decrease in dopamine release. In contrast to mature and old groups, young rats showed no significant change in either GTPase or dopamine release, suggesting a relative “resistance” to such dietary lipid modulation. The observed dissociation in GTPase and dopamine release responses to diet may reflect differing effects of these diets on discrete membrane lipid domains that preferentially influence different signal transduction components. The substantial age-related differences in striatal membrane response to dietary lipid modulation may represent the effects of underlying age differences in membrane lipid metabolism, structure, and/or dynamics. Our findings support the work of other groups that have shown that brain membranes are susceptible to modification by exogenous lipids. They also suggest the need for a more systematic examination of the influence of age on the response to other types of dietary lipid changes.  相似文献

Ferritins are highly stable, multi-subunit protein complexes with iron-binding capacities that reach 4500 iron atoms per ferritin molecule. The strict dependence of cellular physiology on an adequate supply of iron cofactors has likely been a key driving force in the evolution of ferritins as iron storage molecules. The insect intestine has long been known to contain cells that are responsive to dietary iron levels and a specialized group of “iron cells” that always accumulate iron-loaded ferritin, even when no supplementary iron is added to the diet. Here, we further characterize ferritin localization in Drosophila melanogaster larvae raised under iron-enriched and iron-depleted conditions. High dietary iron intake results in ferritin accumulation in the anterior midgut, but also in garland (wreath) cells and in pericardial cells, which together filter the circulating hemolymph. Ferritin is also abundant in the brain, where levels remain unaltered following dietary iron chelation, a treatment that depletes ferritin from the aforementioned tissues. We attribute the stability of ferritin levels in the brain to the function of the blood-brain barrier that may shield this organ from systemic iron fluctuations. Most intriguingly, our dietary manipulations demonstrably iron-depleted the iron cells without a concomitant reduction in their production of ferritin. Therefore, insect iron cells may constitute an exception from the evolutionary norm with respect to iron-dependent ferritin regulation. It will be of interest to decipher both the physiological purpose served and the mechanism employed to untie ferritin regulation from cellular iron levels in this cell type.  相似文献

Objectives: Our objective was to evaluate the effects of a qualitative change in dietary carbohydrate source on body weight and adiposity in a rodent model of diet‐induced obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: We evaluated the effects of high‐fat diets (basal) varying in carbohydrate source in aP2‐agouti transgenic mice. In the ad libitum study, animals were given free access to the basal diet or one of four test diets for 6 weeks. In two of the diets, dietary carbohydrate was derived from a single source: mung bean noodles (MUNG) or rolled oats (ROLL). The remaining diets were designed to mimic commercially available instant oatmeal with added sugar (IO‐S) or flavored instant oatmeal (IO‐F). In the energy‐restricted study, animals were given ad libitum access to the basal diet for 6 weeks. Subsequently, animals were assigned to one of six treatment groups for 6 weeks. One group was continued on the basal diet ad libitum. The remaining groups were maintained with energy restriction (70% ad libitum) on either the basal, MUNG, ROLL, IO‐S, or IO‐F diet. Results: Subcutaneous fat pad mass was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the energy‐restricted basal and IO‐S groups compared with the energy‐restricted ROLL diet. Similarly, visceral fat pad mass was significantly lower with ROLL and MUNG diets (p < 0.05 for both) compared with basal and IO‐S diets, and the insulin:glucose ratio was reduced (by 23% to 34%, p < 0.05) in these two diets compared with all others. In ad libitum‐fed animals, liver fatty acid synthase expression was 43% to 62% lower (p < 0.05) with ROLL and MUNG diets compared with all others. Discussion: These data suggest that a qualitative change in dietary carbohydrate source modulates body weight and adiposity.  相似文献

The effects of two dietary treatments on norepinephrine turnover in iron deficiency were examined. These studies were designed to bridge the gap between previous studies of poor thermoregulation in iron deficiency which used a diet (HMW, Hubbel-Mendel-Wakeman formulation) relatively high in fat (46% of calories) and moderate in carbohydrate (46% of calories) and the more recent studies of thermogenesis in iron deficiency which use the AIN-76 recommended diet which is relatively low in fat (11% of calories) and high in carbohydrate (67% of calories). Iron deficient rats grew less well and had depressed thyroid hormone concentrations regardless of dietary treatment group. The HMW diet significantly increased norepinephrine turnover in heart in iron deficient animals relative to AIN diet but had no effect in controls. Brown adipose tissue norepinephrine turnover was threefold higher in HMW rats fed a low iron diet, and only 67 percent higher in control rats. This study demonstrates that certain modest macronutrient manipulations affect norepinephrine content and turnover more in iron deficient than controls. However, abnormalities in thyroid hormone concentrations persist in iron deficient animals regardless of these dietary treatments.  相似文献

PurposeDiets rich in fat and energy are associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Increased body iron stores have been recognized as a feature of MS. High-fat diets (HFs), excess iron loading and MS are closely associated, but the mechanism linking them has not been clearly defined. We investigated the interaction between dietary fat and dietary Fe in the context of glucose and lipid metabolism in the body.MethodsC57BL6/J mice were divided into four groups and fed the modified AIN-93G low-fat diet (LF) and HF with adequate or excess Fe for 7 weeks. The Fe contents were increased by adding carbonyl iron (2% of diet weight) (LF+Fe and HF+Fe).ResultsHigh iron levels increased blood glucose levels but decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The HF group showed increases in plasma levels of glucose and insulin and insulin resistance. HF+Fe mice showed greater changes. Representative indices of iron status, such hepatic and plasma Fe levels, were not altered further by the HF. However, both the HF and excess iron loading changed the hepatic expression of hepcidin and ferroportin. The LF+Fe, HF and HF+Fe groups showed greater hepatic fat accumulation compared with the LF group. These changes were paralleled by alterations in the levels of enzymes related to hepatic gluconeogenesis and lipid synthesis, which could be due to increases in mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.ConclusionsHigh-fat diets and iron overload are associated with insulin resistance, modified hepatic lipid and iron metabolism and increased mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to better understand why dietary soybean products are poorly utilized by salmonids. The influence of dietary intake on coho salmon fingerling weight gain and specific properties of pyloric caeca enzymes was investigated. Fingerlings were fed diets containing heated or unheated soybean meal (SBM) or Promoveal™, as 15–25% herring meal replacer, for 8–12 weeks. Fish fed to apparent satiation with diets containing heated SBM replacer gained more weight than those fed unheated SBM at the same level. Fish increased in body weight at the same rate when fed restricted rations containing either 15% SBM replacer that was variously heated up to 20 min, 15% Promoveal™ replacer or the herring meal basal diet. After the experimental diets were fed, digestive proteinases were isolated from the pyloric caeca. Yield of pyloric caeca enzymes (PCE), recovery of trypsin in PCE, soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) sensitivity of PCE trypsin, specific activity of PCE trypsin and in vitro casein digestibility by PCE were determined for each dietary group. Weight gain vs in vitro casein digestibility by PCE was linear for animals fed unheated SBM to apparent satiation (r2 = 0.71, P < 0.1) but not for animals fed either heated SBM to apparent satiation or variously heated SBM as 15% replacer at restricted levels. Trypsin from fish fed diets with heated or unheated SBM, but not Promoveal™ replacer, was less sensitive to SBTI than fish fed no SBM. For fish fed diets with variously heated SBM as 15% replacer, the SBTI activity of the SBM and SBTI inhibition of PCE trypsin were inversely related (r2 = 0.88, P < 0.05). The yield of PCE was higher for fish fed 25% of heated SBM replacer than it was for diet groups fed less SBM. The yield of PCE trypsin was higher from animals fed 25% heated SBM replacer than those fed diets with a lower percentage of heated SBM replacer. Feeding coho fingerlings rations with SBM replacer appears to promote physiological compensation of PCE. Heat stable and/or heat-activated factor(s) and SBTI appear to cause the compensation of salmon digestive proteinases from coho salmon fed diets with SBM.  相似文献

A tissue uptake experiment was conducted to determine the bioavailability of rumen bacterial Selenium (Se) in mice. The donor animal was wether fed a diet containing 0.2 mg Se/kg dietary dry matter (DM). Ruminal fluid was collected 2 h postprandially. Bacterial-rich precipitate was obtained by differential centrifugation of the ruminal fluids. This was later freeze-dried and mixed in the diet to be used in feeding the mice experiment. Thirty growing female mice with a body wt (mean±SD) of 21.4±0.74 g were housed in plastic cages (5 mice/cage) and allotted equally to three dietary treatments. Diet 1 and Diet 2 were formulated based on AIN-76, except that no Se supplementation in the form of selenite was made in the former. In Diet 3, rumen bacterial matter was 20% of the diet, which gave an equivalent of 0.1 mg Se/kg dietary DM. The other two diets, Diet 1 and Diet 2, had an Se content of 0.025 and 0.1 mg/kg dietary DM, respectively. A 7-d feeding commenced after 7 d of acclimatization of the semipurified diet. Results showed that those mice fed an Se- (selenite) supplemented diet (Diet 2) had higher (P<0.05) tissue Se concentrations than those mice fed the other two diets. No statistical differences were observed on various tissue Se concentrations between Diet 1 and Diet 3, although the latter diet had higher values. Kidney and liver had the highest Se concentrations compared to the other tissues. This study concludes that bacterial Se collected from the rumen of wether is not fully available for absorption in the intestine of the mice.  相似文献

Effects of field beans with various tannin content and exogenous enzyme mixture containing tannase, pectinase and xylanase activities on N-corrected dietary apparent metabolisable energy (AMEn), coefficients of dry matter (DMR) and nitrogen retention (NR), fat digestibility, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) development, jejunal villus morphometry, ileal digesta viscosity and sialic acid were examined. Birds’ growth performance and energy conversion ratio (ECR) were also measured. Birds were fed one of eight mash diets. The Control diet contained as major ingredients wheat (400 g/kg) and soybean meal (SBM) (127 g/kg and 221 g crude protein/kg and 12.83 MJ AMEn/kg. To reduce nutrient density, the Control diet also contained washed sand at 119 g/kg. Another three diets containing 300 g/kg of each of three experimental field bean cultivar samples in replacement for SBM and sand were also mixed. Each diet was fed to nine pens with two male Ross 308 broilers. Diets high in tannin had low AMEn, ECR, DMR and NR (p < 0.001). Feeding field beans increased (p < 0.001) the weights of the pancreas and the proventriculus and gizzard (PG) of the birds. Supplementing diets with the enzyme mixture improved (p < 0.001) feed conversion efficiency, AMEn and all nutrient utilisation coefficients despite the tannins in diets. The enzyme mixture reduced ileal digesta viscosity (p < 0.001) and the weight of pancreas, total GIT and PG (p < 0.05) of the birds. It can be concluded that the feeding value of field beans with different tannin contents may vary when fed to broilers. The supplementation of the enzyme mixture improved the feeding value of diets for broilers. The beneficial effect of the addition of the enzyme mixture seems to be mediated through reduced ileal digesta viscosity and improved nutrient availability.  相似文献

Captive maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) often consume diets high in prey and meat items even though they are omnivorous in the wild. These soft, high protein diets may exacerbate conditions of gingivitis and cystinuria in this species. Feed intakes were monitored in wolves provided with prey and meat-based diets (3 periods) and subsequently with extruded dog chows and small amounts of prey (2 periods). Digestibilities of each type of diet were measured with the indigestible marker chromic oxide. Dry matter intakes were similar between diets (374–584 g · 30 kg?1 · d?1), even though dietary protein content was reduced from 44% to 29% of dry matter. Digestibility of dry matter was unaltered by these dietary changes (77% of high prey diet vs. 73% of chow diet), but fecal consistency changed to softer stools at lower intakes of prey. Estimated metabolizable energy intakes of wolves (501–674 kJ · kg?0.75 · d?1) were similar to the maintenance requirement for domestic dogs (525 kJ · kg?0.75 · d?1), suggesting a similar energy requirement for maintenance of the wolves. The metabolizable energy derived from protein in the high prey diets was 37%, whereas that of the chow diets was only 27%. These levels exceed estimates of protein requirements for maintenance (4.3–21.8%) and growth (11.5–20.3%) in domestic dogs and may thus exceed those of the wolves. Dietary management of maned wolves should minimize excess protein intake by limiting prey consumption and acclimating animals to extruded diets for domestic dogs. Further research is required to formulate diets for long-term management of cystinuria in maned wolves. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether dietary zinc depletion affected protein expression in the hippocampus. Eleven weanling Sprague-Dawley male rats (21 d) were fed the AIN-93G diet containing 1.5 ppm zinc and supplemented with 30 ppm of zinc in the drinking water. After 1 wk, the rats were randomly divided into three groups: control (n=3), pair fed (n=3), and zinc restricted (n=5). All groups consumed the same diet. The zinc-restricted group consumed water containing no zinc. The rats were sacrificed 3 wk later. Chelatable zinc levels in the hippocampus, as measured by N-(6-methoxy-8-quinolyl)-para-toluenesulfonamide (TSQ) staining, were significantly reduced in the zinc-restricted group. Analysis of hippocampal protein expression by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) revealed increased expression of the P2X6 purinergic receptor in the zinc-restricted rats, as determined by MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) and database analysis. The data provided evidence for the dual effects of dietary zinc deficiency on the hippocampus, reducing ionic zinc levels and stimulating protein expression. The role the P2X6 receptor plays in the physiological response of the hippocampus to zinc depletion remains to be determined.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of elevated dietary levels of vitamin E (α‐tocopherol) on growth performance, proximate composition and fatty acid profiles of juvenile silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus. Three semi‐purified experimental diets were formulated to contain 49% protein and 16% lipid. High docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) tuna oil was added to the diets to supplement DHA. A graded level of vitamin E (0‐, 50‐, and 100 mg kg?1) was added to experimental diets 1 to 3, respectively. Analyzed vit. E levels were 155.2, 195.3 and 236.4 mg kg?1 in diets 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks with juvenile silver pomfret (29.6 ± 7.6 g) using a flow‐through system consisting of nine 1‐m3 tanks. Each treatment had three replicates and fish were stocked at the rate of 20 m?3. Growth performance and feed utilization parameters of fish fed diets 2 and 3 were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in fish fed diet 1, but the parameters in diets 2 and 3 did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Although whole body protein levels were not influenced by the dietary vit. E levels, whole body lipid in fish fed diet 2 was significantly higher than in fish fed the other diets. The whole body vit. E levels in fish fed diet 2 (22.6 mg kg?1) and diet 3 (24.1 mg kg?1) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in those fed diet 1 (18.2 mg kg?1). Whole body total saturated fatty acids were significantly lower, and DHA levels higher in fish fed diets 2 and 3 than those fed diet 1. The results of the present study suggest that increasing dietary supplementation of vit. E in high lipid diets enhances the growth performance of fish and that a dietary level of 196 mg kg?1 vit. E is suitable for the growth of silver pomfret.  相似文献

This paper gives the results of a study conducted at Game Ranching Ltd, situated at the Athi Kapiti Plains, Kenya, to determine the dietary composition of cattle (Bos indicus L), kongoni (Alcephalus buselaphus Pallas) and wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus Burchell), through two forage growing seasons (wet and dry). The dietary preferences and overlaps between the species were also determined. The diet preference of the three herbivores was determined using a microhistological analysis technique. The three dominant grasses in the ranch: Themeda triandra Fork, Digitaria macroblephara (Hack.) Stapf and Penisetum mezianum Leeke, formed the major diets of the animals. The browse component of the diets increased during the dry season by about 100% for all the animal species, with cattle always having twice as much browse as the wild herbivores. However, the animals selected similar diets in terms of plant species during both seasons but were more selective during the wet season. Dietary overlaps were always above 75%, but more than this during the dry season. The dietary overlaps were lower between cattle and wild herbivores than between the wild herbivores. The diet preference index for the animals differed from season to season, and from plant to plant.  相似文献
