In this study, curvilinear regression was applied to the relationship between BMI and body fat percentage, and an analysis was done to see whether there are characteristic changes in that curvilinear regression from elementary to middle school. Then, by simultaneously investigating the changes with age in BMI and body fat percentage, the essential differences in BMI and body fat percentage were demonstrated. The subjects were 789 boys and girls (469 boys, 320 girls) aged 7.5 to 14.5 years from all parts of Japan who participated in regular sports activities. Body weight, total body water (TBW), soft lean mass (SLM), body fat percentage, and fat mass were measured with a body composition analyzer (Tanita BC-521 Inner Scan), using segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis & multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis. Height was measured with a digital height measurer. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as body weight (km) divided by the square of height (m). The results for the validity of regression polynomials of body fat percentage against BMI showed that, for both boys and girls, first-order polynomials were valid in all school years. With regard to changes with age in BMI and body fat percentage, the results showed a temporary drop at 9 years in the aging distance curve in boys, followed by an increasing trend. Peaks were seen in the velocity curve at 9.7 and 11.9 years, but the MPV was presumed to be at 11.9 years. Among girls, a decreasing trend was seen in the aging distance curve, which was opposite to the changes in the aging distance curve for body fat percentage. 相似文献

Anthropometry is a simple and cost-efficient method for the assessment of body composition. However prediction equations to estimate body composition using anthropometry should be 'population-specific'. Most popular body composition prediction equations for Japanese females were proposed more than 40 years ago and there is some concern regarding their usefulness in Japanese females living today. The aim of this study was to compare percentage body fat (%BF) estimated from anthropometry and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to examine the applicability of commonly used prediction equations in young Japanese females. Body composition of 139 Japanese females aged between 18 and 27 years of age (BMI range: 15.1-29.1 kg/m(2)) was measured using whole-body DXA (Lunar DPX-LIQ) scans. From anthropometric measurements %BF was estimated using four equations developed from Japanese females. The results showed that the traditionally employed prediction equations for anthropometry significantly (p<0.01) underestimate %BF of young Japanese females and therefore are not valid for the precise estimation of body composition. New %BF prediction equations were proposed from the DXA and anthropometry results. Application of the proposed equations may assist in more accurate assessment of body fatness in Japanese females living today. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the use of body circumference, ultrasonography, and serum leptin levels as noninvasive measures to estimate body fat percentage in adult, male, Yucatan swine, which are widely used in biomedical research models. Swine (ages 8 to 15 months) were maintained for 20 weeks: control (n = 7); high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (hyperlipidemic; n = 8); alloxan-induced diabetes with high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (diabetic dyslipidemic; n = 7); and diabetic dyslipidemic plus exercise-trained (n = 6). Anesthetized swine were positioned on their dorsum for the following measurements: 1) neck, mid-abdomen, and widest abdominal girth circumferences; and 2) neck and mid-abdomen ultrasound measurements. Blood samples were obtained for quantification of serum leptin levels. After euthanasia, the carcass and viscera were separated for chemical composition analysis, which demonstrated a significant increase in carcass and visceral fat in the diabetic dyslipidemic swine compared to controls. Serum leptin levels were also increased in the hyperlipidemic and diabetic dyslipidemic swine. Regression analyses demonstrated a significant correlation between carcass fat, visceral fat, and all of the circumference, ultrasound, and serum leptin measures. In conclusion, the widest abdominal girth circumference was the noninvasive measure with the highest predictive value for estimating carcass and visceral fat in adult, male Yucatan miniature swine. 相似文献

Objective: To investigate the effect of breastfeeding in healthy boys and girls on their trajectories of percent body fat (%BF) and BMI standard deviation scores (BMI–SDS) throughout childhood. Methods and Procedures: Analyses of the DOrtmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) Study included data from 219 male and 215 female term participants, born between 1984 and 1999, with repeated anthropometric measurements between 0.5 and 7 years and prospective data on duration of breastfeeding. Results: Among boys with an overweight mother (OW‐M), analyses adjusted for potential confounders revealed that not or shortly breastfed (≤17 weeks) boys did not experience the age‐dependent decrease in %BF seen in all children with normal weight mothers (NW‐Ms). In contrast, boys fully breastfed for >17 weeks were protected against the adverse effect of maternal overweight (effect of long breastfeeding vs. no/short breastfeeding among boys with OW‐Ms: 0.46%/year; s.e. 0.18; P = 0.01). There was also a suggestion of an interaction between maternal overweight and breastfeeding for the BMI–SDS trajectory (0.08 SDS/year; s.e. 0.04; P = 0.07). Among boys with NW‐Ms mothers and the corresponding subgroups of girls, breastfeeding had little effect on the development of %BF or BMI–SDS throughout childhood. Discussion: Our study suggests that breastfeeding could offset a potential programming effect for childhood adiposity among boys with OW‐Ms, to whom advice to breast‐feed should thus be specifically targeted. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: In our series of investigations concerning the causes of seasonal change in fat accumulation in young university students, we could not find any contribution of seasonal variation in the ratio of carbohydrate and fat metabolism to that of body fat percentage in Japanese and Thai participants. After our previous study, we examined the effect of daily physical activity on body fat percentage to look for the major causes of seasonal change in fat accumulation in young university students. FINDINGS: In this study, we measured participants' (young Japanese and Thai university students) daily physical activity by a uniaxial accelerometer in addition to the measurements of body fat percentage and body mass index by a bioelectrical impedance meter. We found that there was significant and moderate negative correlation between body fat percentage and daily step counts among Japanese but not Thai participants. We observed significant, moderate and positive correlations between the percentage of body fat and body mass index among Japanese and Thai participants. CONCLUSIONS: Daily physical activity plays an important role in the seasonal variation of body fat percentage of Japanese female students. Our present study also confirmed the importance of daily physical activity for controlling body mass index and for the prevention of obesity. 相似文献

The Czech Republic has undergone rapid political, social, and economic transformation since the late 1980s. While obesity rates among children and adolescents in the Czech Republic have been previously relatively low, this has changed in recent years. Across the past 50 years, body weight, body mass index (BMI)-for-age, and adiposity rebound (AR) (the time when a child reaches the lowest BMI before their BMI gradually begins to increase until adulthood) occurs earlier. The most dramatic changes have been observed among school-aged children, where BMI values have increased at the 50th, 90th, and 97th percentiles. In contrast, adolescent girls appear to be thinner than in the past. The analyses of weight-for-height percentiles indicated that the 50th percentile of the body weight among boys and girls remained similar in nearly all age categories across the past 50 years. Although the growth pattern of children at the 50th percentile has not changed, the 10th and 90th percentiles have expanded. Our findings suggest that the secular trend of increased height, accelerated growth, and earlier maturation is responsible for Czech children experiencing adiposity rebound at earlier ages compared to the past. 相似文献

C-reactive protein (CRP) is considered a marker of inflammation, which is a risk factor for many chronic diseases. However, determinants of CRP remain unclear and were studied in a strictly defined cohort of healthy premenopausal women (n=233) using multiple regression models. Independent predictors of serum CRP (model R2=0.59) were percentage body fat, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), sex hormone-binding globulin and white blood cell count. The close association between CRP and ALP suggests that enzymatic activity of ALP may be important for the anti-inflammatory effects of CRP, which should be confirmed with additional studies. 相似文献

A symmetrical body may signal the ability of an individual to cope with developmental perturbations and may thus be considered a ‘health certificate’. It is known that symmetrical men are considered more attractive by women and that their reproductive success is higher. This study examined the associations between measures of body structure and fluctuating asymmetry in young Turkish men. Weight, height, and bioelectrical impedance were measured in a sample of 250 men residing in Ankara (mean age = 18.4, SD = 0.6), and body mass index was calculated. Fluctuating asymmetry was measured using hand length, hand width, elbow width, wrist width, knee width, ankle width, foot length, foot width, ear length, and ear width. According to the obtained findings, there is a negative linear relationship between composite fluctuating asymmetry (CFA) and height, and a positive quadratic relationship between CFA and fat mass. These results might indicate that the tall Turkish men with medium body fat mass percentage display more developmental stability. 相似文献

We measured whole body bone, fat and lean mass, by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, of third-grade children in a suburban public school district adjacent to Detroit. Of 1,340 eligible children, 773 participated. Using U.S. Census categories, parents identified their children as black/African-American (57%), white (38%), or one of several other categories (5%). Some of the participants also identified with a relatively large Middle Eastern subgroup (Chaldeans). Of the 773 participants, 734 are included in this report (71 Chaldeans, 226 whites, and 437 black/African-Americans; other categories are omitted). We describe body size, body composition, and physical activity levels in the three groups. The Chaldean and black children have significantly higher average whole body bone mineral content (BMC) than whites (P > 0.05), but are not different from each other. Lean mass and height are significantly greater for Chaldeans and blacks than for whites. The ratio of BMC to height was also significantly greater in Chaldeans and blacks compared with whites. Chaldeans have a significantly higher weight and fat mass than either the black or white children, and report significantly less physical activity than either the white or the black children. The higher bone mass among the Chaldean children may be partially explained by their greater body mass, but there is no readily apparent explanation for the observed ethnic differences in body size. We cannot exclude genetic or environmental factors not evaluated in this observational study. Our unexpected finding that Chaldean children, when analyzed as a separate group, are more similar in body composition to black/African-American than to white children contributes to a growing body of literature indicating that the uncritical use of “race” categories may obscure rather than facilitate the identification of population differences. The aim of this study was to investigate fat distribution, mainly abdominal fat, and its relationship with metabolic risk variables in a group of 126 children and adolescents (60 males and 66 females) aged 5.0 to 14.9. According to IOTF criteria, 46 were classified as normal weight, 28 overweight and 52 obese. Weight, height, waist (WC) and hip circumferences were measured. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Total body fat, trunkal and abdominal fat were also assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Glucose, insulin, HDL-Cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), ferritine, homocystein and C-reactive protein (CRP) were measured. Obesity status was related with insulin concentrations, CRP, TG and HDL. Obese patients had higher abdominal fat and higher CRP values than overweight and normal subjects. All markers of central body adiposity were related with insulin and lipid metabolism; however, they were not related with homocystein or ferritin. A simple anthropometric measurement, like waist circumference, seems to be a good predictor of the majority of the obesity related metabolic risk variables. 相似文献

Sixty mares in transition from winter anestrus to normal cyclicity were assigned to a 3 x 2 factorial experiment to determine the effect of energy intake and percentage of body fat on the interval to first ovulation. The factors were 1) percentage of body fat--thin (<11.5), good (11.5 to 15), or fat (>15); and 2) energy intake--maintenance (100% of National Research Council (NRC) digestible energy requirement for maintenance) or high energy (150% of NRC digestible energy requirement for maintenance). Percentage of body fat was estimated by ultrasonographic scanning of rump fat thickness. Energy treatments began on April 2 and ended on June 4. Mares were teased daily with a stallion and their ovaries were palpated per rectum daily or every third day. A high energy intake was effective in hastening ovulation for mares in the thin group (P < 0.05) but not for mares in the moderate or fat groups. Mares in the fat group had a shorter (P < 0.05) interval from April 2 to ovulation (26.4 +/- 4.2 d) than those in the good or high energy-thin groups (48.7 +/- 2.8 and 49.1 +/- 4.2 d, respectively). Duration of the initial estrus was shorter (P < 0.05) for mares in the fat group (16.2 +/- 5.7 d) compared with mares in the good group (34.7 +/- 3.9 d) and tended (P<0.12) to be shorter than mares in the high energy-thin group (29.0 +/- 5.7 d). 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relation between fat mass (FM), fat free mass (FFM) and ventilatory function in children and adolescents. 1 174 healthy children and adolescents (583 males and 591 females) aged 10-18 years were selected from Heilongjiang Province through random sampling by means of questionnaire and physical examination, and measured for height, weight, waist to hip ratio (WHR), FM, FFM and ventilatory function. The data were analyzed by means of independent-samples t test, Pearson correlation analysis and multi-factors regression analysis. Regardless of sex, an independent positive correlation was found (P<0.001) between age and FFM index (FFMI). FM index (FMI) correlated negatively with age in males (P<0.001), but positively with age in females (P<0.001). Regardless of sex, FFMI correlated positively with forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory flow at 25% of forced vital capacity (FEF25%), FEF50%, and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) (P<0.05), while negatively with FEV1/FVC (P<0.01). FFMI was correlated positively with FEF75% in males (P<0.05), but not correlated in females. In males, FMI correlated negatively with FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEF, FEF25%, FEF50%, FEF75% and MMEF (P<0.05), but not correlated with FVC. No correlation was found between the ventilatory function indices and FMI in females. Except FEV1/FVC and FEF75% in males, the effect of FFMI in predicting ventilatory function was higher than FMI regardless of sex. Moreover, the predicting effect of FFMI was higher in males than that in females. Growth spurt of lung function occurred in the ages of 12-15 years in males, while in the ages of 12, 13 and 18 years in females. During the period of growth spurt of lung function, regardless of sex, the effect of FFMI in predicting the lung function was higher than that of age. In conclusion, regardless of sex, FFMI correlates positively with ventilatory function, as a reflection of muscle mass. The effect of FFM in predicting ventilatory function is higher in males than that in females. FM correlates negatively with ventilatory function in males, but not in females. The rapid growth of height and FFM are possibly the main reasons for growth spurt of lung function. 相似文献

Previous research has often used correlations as a statistical method to show agreement; however, this is not a valid use
of the statistic. The purpose of this study was to investigate the bias and limits of agreement for three methods of estimating
percentage body fat for 117 male and 114 female university athletes: hydrodensitometry (HYD), bioelectrical impedance (BIA)
and skinfold calipers (SKF). The mean (SD) percentage body fat for males as assessed by HYD, BIA and SKF methods, respectively,
were 13.2 (3.3)%, 14.1 (3.3)% and 13.0 (3.2)%. Female body fat measurements were 22.5 (3.9)%, 23.7 (4.3)% and 23.8 (4.2)%,
respectively. Pearson product moment correlations for male and female body fat percentages between the three methods were
high, ranging from 0.81 to 0.86 (P < 0.05). However, compared to the criterion measure of body fat percentage (HYD), the magnitude of agreement BIA and SKF
revealed a different pattern. The mean absolute difference between HYD and BIA measurements of body fat for males was −0.8
(2.0)% fat, and between HYD and SKF was it was 0.2 (1.7)% fat. The mean absolute difference for females between HYD and BIA
was −1.2 (2.5)%; for HYD and SKF it was −1.4 (2.2)%. Compared to the HYD measures for males and females, the BIA and SKF measures
were as much as a 3.8% underestimation and a 6.2% overestimation of body fat. This study provides evidence that the strength
of a correlation does not indicate agreement between two methods. In future, reliability and validity studies should examine
the absolute differences between two variables and calculate limits of agreement around which a practitioner can appreciate
the precision of the methodologies.

We investigated the regulatory effects of structural differences among methylxanthine derivatives on the elevation of body fat percentage in developmental-stage rats. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine were used as the methylxanthines. High-fat diets (20% lard) containing each methylxanthine (0.025%) were administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats for 12 weeks, with the result that the body fat percentage was generally reduced in each methylxanthine-fed group. The abdominal adipose tissue weight in the caffeine group was also significantly lower than that in the control group, the serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the caffeine group also being significantly lower than the levels in the control group. The study results suggest that caffeine could contribute most to preventing arteriosclerotic diseases. 相似文献

Secular changes in growth and maturation have been well documented in various world populations, with secular increase especially noticeable in the developed countries. To assess the trend in both adult size and tempo of growth we compared the data on stature and body weight obtained in 1992-1993 from 1,804 Melbourne school students aged 5 to 17 with historical data collected from white Australians during the last 100 years. We illustrate the age-dependent trend in stature and body weight by means of regression surfaces. These were constructed by fitting local regression models to historical data and by simple plots showing the overall, and per decade, secular increase in both these measures at peripubertal and adult ages. Because of limited information on sample sizes and variability provided by the historical data, statistical comparisons have been performed only between the present 1992-1993 survey and two earlier independent surveys conducted in 1985 and 1970. The results have shown secular increase in adult stature over the last century, with the rate of increase varying between 0.4 and 2.1 cm/decade in males and 0.01 and 1.6 cm/decade in females. While secular increase in stature has significantly slowed down during the last two decades, the increase in body weight is still continuing at a high rate, and this increase is more pronounced in females. The period of strong secular increase, especially in the tempo of growth, coincided both with the shift toward earlier menarche and the improvement of socioeconomic conditions of the Australian population. The need for further studies to identify factors determining the continuing increase in body weight is emphasized, and caution in using the existing national growth standards for stature and weight is recommended. 相似文献

Background
Limited data have indicated that body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) of athletes and young adults provide misleading results concerning body fat content. This study was aimed at the evaluation of the relationship between different surrogate indices of fatness (BMI, WC, WHR, WHtR and body adiposity index (BAI)) with the percentage of body fat in Polish students with respect to their sex and physical activity. Methods
A total of 272 students volunteered to participate in the study. Of these students, 177 physical education students (90 males and 87 females) were accepted as active (physical activity of 7 to 9 hours/week); and 95 students of other specializations (49 males and 46 females) were accepted as sedentary (physical activity of 1.5 hours/week). Weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were measured, and BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were calculated. Body fat percentage was assessed using four skinfold measurements. Results
Classification of fatness according to the BMI and the percentage of body fat have indicated that BMI overestimates fatness in lean subjects (active men and women, sedentary men), but underestimates body fat in obese subjects (sedentary women). In all groups, BMI, WHR, WHtR and BAI were significantly correlated with the percentage of body fat (with the exception of WHR and hip circumference in active and sedentary women, respectively). However, coefficients of determination not exceeding 50% and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficients lower than 0.9 indicated no relationship between measured and calculated body fat. Conclusion
The findings in the present study support the concept that irrespective of physical activity and sex none of the calculated indices of fatness are useful in the determination of body fat in young adults. Thus, it seems that easily calculated indices may contribute to distorted body image and unhealthy dietary habits observed in many young adults in Western countries, but also in female athletes. 相似文献18.

This study compared the two following hydrodensitometric methods for estimating percent body fat (%BF): 1) estimation of residual volume (RV) by helium dilution before and after measurement of immersed mass at RV, and 2) determination of immersed mass at a comfortable level of expiration (approximately functional residual capacity) with measurement of the associated gas volume by oxygen dilution. Twelve men [27.9 +/- 7.5 (SD) yr; 79.32 +/- 12.79 kg; 180.5 +/- 9.9 cm] were tested for %BF via both methods on each of two separate visits within 3 days by using a counterbalanced design. The two helium dilution measurements yielded a technical error of measurement of 0.2% BF and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.999. Corresponding values for the oxygen dilution method were 0.4% BF and 0.999, respectively. There was no difference (P = 0.80) between the helium dilution (16.9 +/- 9.3% BF) and oxygen dilution (16.9 +/- 9.4% BF) methods, and the individual differences ranged from -0.7 to 0.6% BF. The interclass correlation coefficient between the two methods was 0.999 with a SE of estimate of 0.4% BF. Whereas both methods were precise and reliable and yielded similar results, the oxygen dilution technique was more expedient and was preferred by the subjects because they were not required to exhale to RV. 相似文献

A comparative study was conducted between two independent methods to estimate body fat in 13 college male distance-runners (20.2 +/- 1.1 yrs) and 11 male college students (19.6 +/- 0.7 yrs) as control group. The methods dealt with different body component parameters. Body fat was estimated (1) in terms of total body water based on the analysis of dilution of orally ingested deuterium oxide (D2O) in urine, and (2) in terms of body density based on underwater weighing. The results were as follows: 1) The skinfold thickness at 14 sites in distance-runners were thinner than those in control group. The mean values for subcutaneous fat in distance-runners were 4.3 +/- 0.7 kg (7.2 +/- 1.1%), which were lower than those (8.3 +/- 2.7 kg & 13.3 +/- 3.4%) in control group significantly. Oh the other hand, the mean values for internal fat in distance-runners were 8.7 +/- 1.4 kg (14.4 +/- 1.6%), which were larger than those (6.5 +/- 3.1 kg & 10.2 +/- 4.3%) in control group. 2) The mean values for percent body fat in control group were 16.1 +/- 1.6% by skinfolds method, 20.2 +/- 5.1% by body density method and 23.5 +/- 4.6% by total body water method. The estimated values of percent body fat by the methods of body density and total body water were approximately the same. 3) The mean values for percent body fat in distance-runners were 11.9 +/- 1.4% by skinfolds method, 11.8 +/- 1.7% by body density method and 21.5 +/- 1.9% by total body water method. The estimated values of percent body fat in distance-runners were lower than those in control group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献
