Strategies for resource exploitation

In a mixed strategy, game-theoretical scenario mimicking the behaviour of fishing vessels competing for a limited renewable resource, agents following either a Collective Intelligence or a purely selfish strategy quickly outperform fully cooperative teams as well as agents not planning for future action by acting randomly. The stable balance between fully selfish agents and the Collective Intelligence depends subtly on the ratio of instantaneous demand to instantaneously available resource as well as on the dynamics of the resource itself. This suggests use of ratio of strategies as an indicator of the level of resource exploitation. The Collective Intelligence performance proves to be extremely robust to uncertain information, especially when longer records of historical catch are accounted for.     

Evaluation of high-dose estrogen and high-dose estrogen plus methyltestosterone treatment on cognitive task performance in postmenopausal women

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the cognitive effects of high-dose oral estrogen alone or in combination with oral methyltestosterone in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Participants were tested with a randomized, double-blind design on the Identical Pictures, Cube Comparisons, Building Memory and Shape Memory tasks before and after 4 months of hormone treatment. RESULTS: Women receiving estrogen and methyltestosterone maintained a steady level of performance on the Building Memory task, whereas those receiving estrogen alone showed a decrease in performance. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the addition of testosterone to high-dose estrogen replacement exerts a protective effect on memory performance in postmenopausal women.     

Gregarious Oviposition and Clutch Size Adjustment by a Heliconius Butterfly1

Female Heliconius hewitsoni butterflies were found to aggregate during oviposition, producing multi‐parent egg clutches. This behavior occurred when host plants were locally plentiful, indicating that females chose to oviposit gregariously. Collective clutch size correlated with host growth rate and with the number of females contributing to a clutch. Eggs did not positively bias host plant growth. Collective clutch size adjustment may represent a mechanism for facilitating larval aggregation while reducing intraspecific competition.
