The Bischof-Köhler hypothesis posits that nonhuman animals cannot plan for future motivational states that differ from a current state. [Naqshbandi, M., Roberts, W.A., 2006. Anticipation of future events in squirrel monkeys Samiri scireus and rats Rattus norvegicus: tests of the Bischof-Köhler hypothesis. J. Comp. Psychol. 120, 345–357] found that two squirrel monkeys that were not thirsty at the time of choice reversed their preference for a larger amount of food when choice of a smaller amount alleviated future thirst. This apparent anticipation of future thirst contradicts the Bischof-Köhler hypothesis. We used the methods described by Naqshbandi and Roberts with rhesus monkey subjects and found that the monkeys did not alter their behavior in anticipation of future thirst. To assess which factors enhance and inhibit the ability to express planning, we then systematically modified the experimental design in four subsequent experiments and found that monkeys that were not thirsty acted to alleviate future thirst only when the delay between their behavior and the contingent outcome was brief. Taken together these results suggest that the inability of rhesus monkeys to display planning resulted from their inability to learn behavior-outcome associations across long-delay intervals as would be expected from traditional accounts of operant learning, rather than from failure to anticipate future motivational states as posited by the Bischof-Köhler hypothesis.  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic salmon or parr (Salmo salar L.) maintain station at certain locations in flowing stream water. This position choice is assumed to involve the maximization of energy intake, based upon food availability which is usually directly related to water flow rate. Conversely energy expenditure, including station holding behaviour, foraging and defending preferred sites, is inversely related to water flow rate. Adaptations of parr to life in fast flows implies that station holding is energetically inexpensive at water speeds up to the maximum sustained holding speed, which is fish specific, thus the most important energetic consideration for parr is the ability to maximize food intake. Ten groups of three parr were each observed for 60 min within an artificial stream tank over a heterogeneous substratum. Individual position choice and behaviour were recorded continuously. For each location chosen by the parr the potential upstream line‐of‐sight (LOS), defined as the maximum distance upstream that the water surface would be visible, was calculated. At those sites where foraging behaviour was observed, the mean upstream potential LOS was significantly greater than at sites where other behaviours were observed and at 400 randomly generated sites within the tank. When foraging, parr usually take food from the stream drift and there is a significant time expenditure on food location, identification and catching. Results presented here would seem to confirm that to maximize time available to make these decisions, a fish would be expected to maximize the distance over which it can observe potential food particles.  相似文献

Environmental enrichment devices are a potential way to enhance psychological well-being in laboratory animals. The effects of such devices need to be systematically evaluated before they are recommended for widespread use. The purpose of this research was to monitor the behavioural and physiological responses of adult female rhesus macaques to a simple enrichment device. The apparatus consisted of a box attached to the monkey's home cage that contained a radio and a food dispenser, which could be controlled by the monkeys via contact detectors. Radio and food dispenser use were automatically recorded. Whole blood serotonin (WBS), plasma cortisol and abnormal behaviour were measured in 5 monkeys before, during and after a 20-week period in which the monkey's cages were equipped with the device. All monkeys used the device (3 of the 5 subjects earned an average of more than 200 food pellets per day). Mean plasma cortisol and whole blood serotonin did not differ across sampling times, suggesting that the apparatus had no effect on basal stress levels. There was an inverse relationship between apparatus use and cortisol levels in 76% of the samples, but only 3 of 17 coefficients were significant. There was a significant but small negative correlation between apparatus use and self-abusive behaviour. This enrichment device was readily used by adult rhesus monkeys and could be adapted for use in a wide variety of laboratory settings.  相似文献

Classic central place foraging theory does not focus on the foraging of central place herbivores. This is especially true with regard to large mammalian herbivores. To understand the foraging dynamics of these neglected foragers, we measured giving‐up densities (GUDs) in artificial food patches. We did this at different distances away from the central point (i.e. corral) for a herd of free‐ranging domestic goats. To determine temporal changes, we conducted the study over a 3‐mo period during an extended dry season. Throughout our study, goats foraged across a gradient of food availability where forage was more available farther away from the central point. In contrast to the prediction that predation risk and/or increased travel costs were the main drivers of foraging decisions, we found that the goats increased their feeding effort (i.e. achieved lower GUDs) the farther away they moved from the central point. This suggests that either metabolic or missed opportunity costs were the main factors that influenced foraging decisions. In addition, we suggest that social foraging may have also played a role. With increases in foraging opportunities away from the central point, a herd will likely move slowly while foraging. As a result, individuals can feed intensively from patches but remain part of the group. Ironically, owing to the sustained close proximity of other group members, individuals may perceive patches farther from the central point as being safer. Temporally, the goats increased their feeding effort throughout the dry season. This suggests there was a decline in food quality and/or availability across the environment as the study progressed. Despite this increase in feeding effort, the negative relationship with distance did not change. Ultimately, our results provide key insight into how metabolic, missed opportunity and perceived predation costs influence the feeding decisions of large central place herbivores.  相似文献

Proceptive behavior of female rhesus monkeys during follicular and luteal phases of the ovarian cycle was examined in laboratory tests with a tethered male partner. Cyclical changes in proceptive behavior were observed. In tests during the follicular phase of their cycles, females on the average approached and solicited the male at a higher rate, spent more time sitting within proximity of him, and less time at a maximum distance away from him than during tests in the luteal phase of their cycles. Additionally, in the follicular phase of their cycles, females exhibited an increase in proceptivity following the male's ejaculation. This latter finding was discussed in light of other observations demonstrating that male rhesus monkeys are capable of multiple ejaculations. When females were paired with a tethered, ovariectomized female as a partner, rather than an adult male, none of the cyclical changes in proceptive and sexual behavior were observed.  相似文献

Abstract: The influences of housing location and temporal factors on the results of blood sampling were examined to determine their contributions to levels of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal hormones, as well as leukocyte subset counts from peripheral blood in rhesus monkeys. Differences in housing location and the amount of room disturbance associated with blood sampling have a significant impact on cell counts, but not on ACTH or Cortisol levels.  相似文献

The behaviour of members of a group of rhesus monkeys was observed in experimentally created, competitive feeding situations. Socially dominant members of the group tended to start eating before lower-ranking subjects, and generally ate more. Dominants sometimes used aggression to control access to food, but overall, intermediate-ranking monkeys were involved in most agonistic episodes. Non-dominant subjects improved their feeding performance when food was presented in three piles rather than one pile, often by snatching food and consuming it away from the pile. These general patterns were less evident when realistic snake models were placed on some of the food piles. Feeding was disrupted by the presence of snakes, but notably, subordinates risked feeding in these conditions. Piles containing preferred foods and snakes were eaten from, but a low-preference food (carrot) under snakes went untouched by all subjects. The results suggest that group-members evaluate potential risks and benefits of competing for a restricted resource, and that dominance status, while an important factor, is only one element in the equation.  相似文献

The samango monkey occurs at the southern limit of the range of Cercopithecus mitis. Greater climatic seasonality at this latitude results in more predictable fruiting patterns. In addition, there are no diurnal sympatric primate frugivores. Under these conditions, the diet and feeding strategies of samango monkeys would be expected to differ notably from those of central or east African C. mitis subspecies. Contrary to these expectations, the preliminary observations reported here indicate that diets of samango and blue monkeys differ only superficially in the proportions of items eaten. Similarities in feeding behaviour are especially marked during the dry season period when fruit is not abundant. Both samango and blue monkeys tend to be less selective in their choice of food species and to eat available food species regardless of their energy content; a shift toward less nutritious items such as leaves is also noted. Feeding behaviour during the summer wet season is characterized by the selection of fruits with high-energy values. A high proportion of visits by the monkeys to areas of greater food availability suggests a concentration of feeding effort in food patches and the selection of higher energy food species within patches.  相似文献

We investigated how food preferences and social bonds interact to determine the choice of grazing location in sheep. Ewes of INRA 401 breed were grazed in plots in which taller areas, i.e. preferred feeding sites, were left to grow at 15 or 50 m from a socially attractive site, i.e. familiar ewes placed in a public pen at one end of the plot. Eight experimental ewes were tested either alone or in groups with one, three or six accompanying animals chosen amongst 20 other familiar ewes. We used a Latin square design, in which the eight treatments (two distancesxfour group sizes) were balanced in 8 measurement days. We recorded, in 20-min tests, the behaviour of the experimental ewes by focal sampling, and the location of each animal in the groups by scan sampling. Foraging location, dietary choices and vigilance behaviour of ewes were affected by both the distance between the group of public peers and the preferred feeding site, and the size of their own group. Our results suggest that a sheep will move whether alone or with a few peers to a preferred feeding site located close to the core of its social group. In a small sub-group, its frequency of vigilance behaviour increases, probably to maintain social contact with the rest of the group. Conversely, a sheep will not leave its group to reach a preferred feeding site located further away unless it is followed by several other peers.  相似文献

During early July 1968, a severe food shortage occurred on Cayo Santiago, an island colony of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). The food shortage produced striking changes in the behavior of the monkeys. Within the one social group intensively studied, the total frequencies of grooming, play and fights decreased significantly; the frequency of matings also dropped; body contact, displacements by other groups, and non-displacement movements decreased, but not in statistically significant amounts. Changes in the percentage of total grooming attributable to related and unrelated monkeys reflected the stability of the rhesus matriline. Comparisons made between Cayo Santiago and other primate groups under analogous situations reveal similar responses to food shortage.  相似文献

Zinc deprivation has been shown to produce hypogeusia in rhesus monkeys but the possible consequences of altered taste sensitivity for food preference and selection is not known. We studied 13 rhesus monkeys (2.5 to 3 years of age) for food preference in a structured choice situation. These animals were fed two levels of dietary zinc: marginally zinc deprived (fed 4 μg zinc/g diet from conception and throughout development;N=6), or control (fed a 100 μg zinc/g diet throughout the study;N=7). Preference for familiar vs unfamiliar food items, order of food preferences, persistence in retrieval of preferred and nonpreferred foods, and preference under four deprivation periods were examined. Animals were offered a choice of two food items, both containing minimal zinc levels, and food choice and latency of choice were measured. Results indicate that animals fed the marginal zinc diets had reduced preference for unfamiliar foods relative to controls and different patterns of food preference. These results may be relevant to maintenance of appropriate food selection in marginally zinc deprived populations.  相似文献

Although eastern chipmunks typically larder hoard food in theirburrows, some scatter hoarding occurs, especially by newly emergedjuveniles and by females with young. To examine patterns ofscatter hoard placement and their adaptive significance, weused standard food provisioning tests followed by continuousmonitoring to determine the longevity and fate of scatter hoards.Longevity of scatter hoards was low (median 74 min) and pilferagewas high (46%). Chipmunks placed scatter hoards away from thepatch, closer to their burrow and within the defended area ofprimary use. Scatter hoard placement was affected by the numberof competitors at the patch. However, juveniles and femaleswith young differed slightly in their responses. competitorsthat approached scatteihoards were sometimes chased away bythe scatter hoard's owner, and the scatter hoard was moved toanother location by the owner. Females with young recoveredtheir largest scatter hoards first, but there was little additionalpattern in scatter hoard recovery. An experiment using simulatedscatter hoards showed that scatter hoards farther from a patchof food lasted longer and that disturbing and marking scatterhoards reduced their longevity. These observations indicate:(1) that scatter hoard placement is more related to avoidingpilferage of completed caches than to rapidly sequestering fooditems from an ephemeral patch and (2) that optimal cache distributionmay be affected by the cache-defense ability of individuals,by the relationship between competitor density and cache securitynear the patch, and by the territorial behavior of neighboringconspecifics.  相似文献

In this study, we present evidence that the larvae of Acrobasis vaccinii (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a species that feeds on cranberry fruit, are able to take into account at least three cues (fruit size, fruit color, and the distance between fruits) when searching for food. In laboratory experiments, the relative impact of each cue depended on which cues were presented in a given bioassay. Fruit color was the dominant cue in some contexts (e.g., larvae showed a significant perference for green fruit over red ones regardless of fruit size when fruits were equidistant from the larvae) but not in others (e.g., when given a choice between a large red fruit placed close to the larvae and a small green fruit placed farther away, a significantly higher proportion of larvae chose the former). This plasticity in foraging behavior allows larvae to maximize foraging efficiency under conditions of differing fruit and larval densities, which this species experiences in nature.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Host–parasitoid models often identify foraging behaviour and dispersal distance as important for system persistence.
2. Laboratory observations and field trials were used to characterise foraging behaviour and dispersal capability of Platygaster californica Ashmead (Platygasteridae), a parasitoid of the gall midge Rhopalomyia californica Felt (Cecidomyiidae).
3. Although foraging parasitoids meticulously searched plants in laboratory observations, none of the laboratory trials resulted in 100% parasitism, and the proportion of parasitism declined as midge egg density increased.
4. The field trials showed that the distribution of parasitism over distance from a central release point was hump-shaped, as predicted by a simple diffusion model. Mean parasitoid dispersal distance was 4.5 m, considerably farther than the 1.7 m mean midge dispersal found in previous work.
5. Although the parasitoid appears to search thoroughly for midge eggs and to disperse farther than the midge, the results of this study show how this host–parasitoid system may persist due to spatially variable incomplete parasitism.  相似文献

We conducted an experiment on a group of captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) in which we manipulated both food size and interfood distance independently to examine which factor was more important in causing aggressive competition. For each of 254 trials, the monkeys were offered simultaneously two apple pieces ranging in size from 1 to 40 g at interfood distances ranging from 1 to 5 m. In contrast to other studies, food size and interfood distance were not conflated in this study. Multiple regression analyses revealed that food size was a better predictor of aggression whereas interfood distance was a better predictor of the ability to monopolize foods. Growing evidence suggests that factors such as food size, quality and depletion time are more important than interfood distance in influencing aggression within groups.  相似文献

Five infant rhesus monkeys reared togather in free-ranging natural environment for about eight months were subjected to peer separation. Separation of an infant was inflicted by way of removing all the other infants from their home range. The infants so separated showed exceedingly high levels of locomotion and vocalizations in the beginning of separation phase, but their such excited behaviour did not last for more than a day, and during the remaining separation period they appeared to be quite depressed as mainly indicated by their reduced range of locomotion, reduced motivation for food and water, and reduced level of vocalization and environmental exploration. Thus, the animals showed a biphasic response to separation, which was characterized by an initial phase of ‘protest’ followed by a ‘despair’ stage, basically similar to what has been reported in infant rhesus monkeys subjected to peer or mother separation under laboratory conditions. The main project of which this research was a part is being financed by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR).  相似文献

Many territorial insects use specific perches, or lookout posts, from which they perceive and react to conspecific males and females. We investigated the lookout post choice of territorial male amberwing dragonflies (Perithemis tenera). An observational study indicated that males rarely perched directly at their oviposition site; rather, they perched farther out from shore than, and within 2 m from, their oviposition site. In an experimental study, we provided an array of perches at different distances from the shore and oviposition site to eliminate perch limitation as a factor in perch choice. The results of the experimental study confirmed the patterns evident in the observational study; males perched farther from shore than their oviposition site was located. Interestingly, in both the observational and the experimental study, when neighbors were close, a male perched away from his closest neighbor, which usually resulted in his oviposition site being closer to his neighbor than he was. Thus, male amberwings apparently alter their perch choice within their territories in response to the location of other males. These lookout post locations may provide the best opportunity for the territorial male to perceive passing females and intruding males, while minimizing conflict with their neighbors.  相似文献

Background

Many Canadian patients who receive hemodialysis live far from their attending nephrologist, which may affect clinical outcomes. We investigated whether patients receiving hemodialysis who live farther from their attending nephrologist are more likely to die than those who live closer.

Methods

We studied a random sample of 18 722 patients who began hemodialysis between 1990 and 2000 in Canada. We calculated the distance between each patient''s residence location at the start of dialysis and the practice location of their attending nephrologist. We used Cox proportional hazards models to examine the adjusted relation between distance and clinical outcomes (death from all causes, infectious causes and cardiovascular causes) over a follow-up period of up to 14 years.

Results

During the follow-up period (median 2.5 yr, interquartile range 1.0–4.7 yr), 11 582 (62%) patients died. Compared with patients who lived within 50 km of their nephrologist, the adjusted hazard ratio of death among those who lived 50.1–150 km away was 1.06 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.12), 1.13 (95% CI 1.04–1.22) for those who lived 150.1–300 km away and 1.13 (95% CI 1.03–1.24) for those who lived more than 300 km from their nephrologist (p for trend < 0.001). The risk of death from infectious causes increased with greater distance from the attending nephrologist (p for trend < 0.001). The risk of death from cardiovascular causes did not increase with distance from the attending nephrologist (p for trend = 0.21). Compared with patients who lived within 50 km of their nephrologist, the adjusted hazard ratio of death among those who lived more than 300 km away was 1.75 (95% CI 1.32–2.32) for infectious causes and 0.93 (95% CI 0.79–1.09) for cardiovascular causes.

Conclusions

Mortality associated with hemodialysis was greater among patients who lived farther from their attending nephrologist, as compared with those who lived closer. This was especially evident for death from infectious causes. In Canada, no one is denied renal replacement therapy because of their residence location; however, a substantial proportion of patients receiving dialysis live more than 300 km from the closest nephrologist.1 Since this geographic barrier may make it more difficult to provide high-quality renal care, it is plausible that disparities in access to appropriate care may result in differences in health outcomes. Despite the potential implications for health policy, this issue has not been formally studied. We sought to examine this issue using data collected prospectively from patients who began hemodialysis in Canada between 1990 and 2000. We hypothesized that patients who lived farther away from their attending nephrologist would be more likely than patients who lived closer to die after starting dialysis.  相似文献

The studies were performed on 4 intact and 3 callosotomized adult male rhesus monkeys that comprised one social group. Group behaviour of all the monkeys was investigated by the frequency method of social contacts registration. Both aggressive and friendly contacts were registered. The results obtained have shown a considerable decrease in social contacts of callosotomized rhesus monkeys, as compared to normal animals. The aggressive contacts prevailed in the behaviour of the operated monkeys. The data suggest that callosotomy does not only significantly decrease the frequency, but also alters the structure of social contacts in the rhesus monkeys.  相似文献
