Kampimodromus aberrans, Typhlodromus pyri and Amblyseius andersoni are generalist predatory mites important in controlling tetranychid and eriophyoid mites in European vineyards. They can persist by exploiting various non-prey foods when their main prey is absent or scarce. A comparative analysis of the effects of various prey and non-prey foods on the life history of these predators is lacking. In the laboratory, predatory mites were reared on herbivorous mites (Panonychus ulmi, Eotetranychus carpini and Colomerus vitis), a potential alternative prey (Tydeus caudatus) and two non-prey foods, i.e. the pollen of Typha latifolia and the mycelium of Grape downy mildew (GDM) Plasmopara viticola. Developmental times, survival, sex ratio and fecundity as well as life table parameters were estimated. Kampimodromus aberrans developed faster on E. carpini, C. vitis or pollen than on P. ulmi and laid more eggs on pollen than on prey. Low numbers of this predator developed on GDM infected leaves. Tydeus caudatus was not suitable as prey for any of the three predatory mites. Kampimodromus aberrans showed the highest intrinsic rate of population increase when fed on pollen. Developmental times of T. pyri on prey or pollen were similar but fecundity was higher on pollen than on P. ulmi. Typhlodromus pyri had higher intrinsic rates of population increase on C. vitis and pollen than on P. ulmi; E. carpini showed intermediate values whereas GDM resulted in the lowest r ( m ) values. Development of A. andersoni females was faster on pollen and C. vitis than on P. ulmi and GDM. Fecundity was higher on pollen and mites compared to GDM. Life table parameters of A. andersoni did not differ when predators were fed with prey or pollen while GDM led to a lower r ( m ) value. On a specific diet A. andersoni exhibited faster development and higher fecundity than T. pyri and K. aberrans. These findings improve knowledge on factors affecting the potential of predatory mites in controlling phytophagous mites in European vineyards.  相似文献

Population growth and persistence of Euseius finlandicus (Oudemans), Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten and Kampimodromus aberrans (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were studied in single-species and two-species systems on apple seedlings primarily infested by Panonychus ulmi Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) in an environmentally controlled greenhouse. During the experiment, the seedlings developed natural infestations by Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and powdery mildew. Several weeks after the start of the experiment a condition of diminishing prey availability was created by use of hexythiazox treatments. Without heterospecific competitors, T. pyri attained a higher population level than E. finlandicus or K. aberrans when similar amounts of food (spider mites) were available to each. Population growth of T. pyri was decisively favoured by the presence of T. urticae. In the single-species systems each predatory species persisted to the end of the experiment in spite of diminishing prey. In two-species systems with T. pyri/E. finlandicus and T. pyri/K. aberrans that were started with the same number of individuals of each species, only T. pyri was left at the end of the experiment. Typhlodromus pyri became more numerous than the other species when prey was abundant (which was in accordance with the results of the single-species groups) and finally displaced E. finlandicus and K. aberrans towards the end of the experiment. The following factors may have contributed to the dominance of T. pyri: (1) the ability of adult females to survive longer without food than those of E. finlandicus and K. aberrans, (2) the ability to complete juvenile development and to sustain reproduction with phytoseiid prey and (3) an advantage in foraging behaviour over K. aberrans and E. finlandicus at low spider mite levels. Euseius finlandicus predominated in the two-species system E. finlandicus/K. aberrans, but both species persisted to the end of the experiment.  相似文献

We conducted a series of path analyses to determine which direct and indirect species interactions were most important in determining the within-season dynamics of apple rust mite (Aculus schlechtendali) (Eriophyidae) in a series of Nova Scotian (Canada) apple orchards. Typhlodromus pyri (Phytoseiidae) was usually more important than Zetzellia mali (Stigmaeidae) in the direct reduction of the apple rust mite population growth rate. When both predators contributed to lowering apple rust mite growth, T. pyri acted earlier in the season than did Z. mali. Predation by T. pyri was not affected by plant quality (nitrogen content or cultivar), but predation by Z. mali was enhanced by high nitrogen levels and was influenced by cultivar. There was little evidence of direct competition between Panonychus ulmi and apple rust mite in these orchards, possibly due to the low densities of P. ulmi. The indirect effects were generally smaller than the direct effects, but were occasionally important. Apparent competition between P. ulmi and apple rust mite was observed at times in some orchards, more often mediated by Z. mali than by T. pyri. Interference between the predator species was only occasionally strong enough to affect apple rust mite population dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract:  Prey consumption by Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten was studied in the presence and absence of apple powdery mildew, Podosphaera leucotricha (Ell. and Everh.) under constant laboratory conditions. Eggs of Tetranychus urticae Koch were offered to predatory mites as a prey. Seven densities ranging from five to 100 T. urticae eggs per arena were used. Mildew conidia (approximately 0.5 mg) were added to half of the arenas by brushing them from infected apple leaves. A single adult female of T. pyri was introduced onto each arena and number of prey eggs consumed was counted 12 h later when the predator was offered new T. urticae eggs again and the procedure was repeated once. Data showed that predators consumed in both experimental periods nearly all prey in experiments with densities up to 40 eggs per arena and no mildew. However, the number of eggs consumed decreased more than twofold when mildew conidia were supplied, even at high prey densities. Differences in predation rate between treatments with and without mildew were highly significant. The results thus indicate that availability of mildew as an alternative food can reduce prey suppression by T. pyri . Possible implications of these findings in biological control of spider mites by generalist predatory mites are discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to characterize the activity of the insecticide spinosad against the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, and European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae). T. urticae females and larvae were individually placed on bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae), leaf disks treated with four rates of spinosad (25, 55, 121, and 266 ppm) and a water control. Significantly fewer T. urticae completed development on any spinosad rates (<15%) compared with the control (>85%), whereas spinosad exhibited no significant effects on P. ulmi development; 72.5 and 83.1% of P. ulmi completed development on apple (Malus pumila P. Mill, Rosaceae) leaf disks treated with 75 ppm spinosad and the control, respectively. T. urticae adult females placed on spinosad-treated disks had significantly higher mortality and lower oviposition rates compared with the water control; no significant mortality effects were observed until 3 d after placing adults on leaf disks. In choice tests where half of a bean leaf was treated with 55 ppm spinosad transversally or longitudinally, T. urticae females were repelled by spinosad and largely oviposited and fed on nonspinosad treated areas. Spinosad did not affect the behavior of P. ulmi females. When T. urticae females were released on potted bean plants (two-leaf stage) in which leaves received spinosad sprays on the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces, or complete spinosad coverage on one or two of the leaves, mite population increase lagged significantly behind those released on control plants. These results indicate that spinosad has significant acaricidal effects against T. urticae but not P. ulmi.  相似文献

The response of adult females of the predatory mite Typhlodromus kerkirae (Acari: Phytoseiidae) to volatiles emitted from bean leaves infested with Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) or from leaves of Oxalis corniculata infested with Petrobia harti (Acari: Tetranychidae) was studied in the laboratory using a Y-tube olfactometer. Typhlodromus kerkirae females reared from larvae through to adults on T. urticae and pollen of Vicia faba responded to volatiles of bean leaves infested with T. urticae, either when they had a choice between infested and non-infested bean leaves or between bean leaves infested with T. urticae and O. corniculata leaves infested with P. harti. However, they did not respond when they had been reared only on the carotenoid-deficient pollen of V. faba. Female T. kerkirae that had been reared from larva to the tenth day of adult life on T. urticae and subsequently fed for 1 week on V. faba pollen did not respond to volatiles of bean leaves infested with T. urticae. In contrast, those that had been reared on V. faba pollen to the tenth day of adult life and subsequently fed for 1 week on T. urticae responded to volatiles of infested bean leaves.  相似文献

An organophosphate pyrethroid-resistant strain of Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten imported from New Zealand was reared on potted apple trees in an outdoor insectary. From 1988 to 1995, the population was selected one to three times per year with a dilute solution (1.7 ppm) of the pyrethroid cypermethrin. Petri dish bioassays with cypermethrin in 1995 indicated that the insectary-reared T. pyri had an LC50 of 81 ppm versus 0.006 ppm for native T. pyri taken from a research orchard. The bioassays suggested that recommended orchard rates of cypermethrin would cause heavy mortality in native populations of T. pyri but only moderate losses in the imported New Zealand strain. Bioassays in 1996 with the organophosphate insecticide dimethoate indicated both New Zealand and native T. pyri were susceptible and that recommended orchard rates of dimethoate likely would cause high mortality of T. pyri in apple orchards. These findings from bioassays were supported by data from orchard trials. In June and July 1993, insectary-reared New Zealand T. pyri were placed on five apple trees in each of eight 38-tree plots in the research orchard. In late August 1994, New Zealand T. pyri from orchard trees that had been sprayed twice by airblast sprayer with the full recommended rate of 50 g (AI)/ha (83 ppm) cypermethrin were placed on the other 33 trees in each of six plots. In the summers of 1994-1996, plots were treated with one of the following insecticide regimes: (1) conventional integrated pest management (IPM) (registered neurotoxic insecticides considered harmless or slightly toxic to T. pyri); (2) advanced IPM (use of newer, more selective insecticides); (3) pyrethroid (at least one full-rate application of cypermethrin); (4) dimethoate; and (5) dimethoate plus pyrethroid. Densities of European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), were highest in all plots treated with dimethoate and in pyrethroid plots not yet inoculated with New Zealand T. pyri. Densities of apple rust mite, Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa), and of the stigmaeid predator Zetzellia mali (Ewing) were highest in plots treated with dimethoate and were nearly absent in the IPM plots. Densities of T. pyri were high enough for effective biocontrol in the IPM plots and in the pyrethroid plots 1-2 yr after release of the New Zealand strain, provided pyrethroid was applied just before the resistant strain was released in the orchard. A recurring theme of this study was the generally negative association between densities of phytophagous mites and those of T. pyri, suggesting the ability of this predator to suppress their prey. In contrast, the positive association between phytophagous mites and Z. mali suggests the inability of this predator to regulate their prey at least under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

The ability of Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten to feed on powdery mildew was investigated. Adult females of T. pyri which had previously been fed on the pollen of Pinus sylvestris L. were offered three powdery mildew species and their feeding behaviour was observed. The females fed readily on the conidia of Erysiphe orontii Cast. from tobacco and Oidium fragariae Harz. from strawberry while no feeding was observed on Erysiphe polygoni DC. from red clover, even after the mites were starved for 2 days. Erysiphe orontii was tested for its effect on the survival, oviposition and development of T. pyri. The results showed that the conidia of E. orontii can supply mites with the water and nutrients necessary for their normal development. Mature females successfully mated and reproduced, although their oviposition rate was low. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The leaves of an apple tree are a patchy environment for leaf-inhabiting predaceous and phytophagous mites, consisting of discrete patches of leaf resources connected by relatively inhospitable petioles and branches. We investigated four species of predaceous mites ( Amblyseius andersoni , Galendromus occidentalis , Typhlodromus pyri (Acari: Phytoseiidae), and Zetzellia mali (Acari: Stigmaeidae)) inhabiting 'Red Delicious' apple trees ( Malus pumila ). These mites experience intra-guild predation (IGP), and we hypothesized that the vulnerable species would show increased aggregation when they are in plots with other predators. We also hypothesized that the increase in aggregation will be proportional to the vulnerability of the predator to IGP. We measured intraspecific aggregation with a binomial model that measures P(I), the amount of space a species occupies at a given average density, and compares this statistic among species at a common average density: samples that exhibit lower values of P(I) at a particular average density are considered to be more aggregated. We measured P(I) for the predaceous mites over four years, combining counts of all life stages. Data were segregated into groups with plots containing each predator alone, and each predator together with combinations of other predators. G. occidentalis and Z. mali showed significant increases in aggregation when other predators were present, with G. occidentalis showing the greatest change. T. pyri showed significant change only in the presence of Z. mali . A. andersoni , the largest mite studied here, showed no change in aggregation in the presence of other predators. We discuss possible causes of these changes in intraspecific aggregation and how they may promote long-term coexistence of predaceous mites.  相似文献

In a series of experiments, the interspecific predation and cannibalism on immatures by the adult females of Euseius finlandicus, Kampimodromus aberrans and Typhlodromus pyri were examined under laboratory conditions. The three species showed differing tendencies to prey on each other's motile immature stages. Euseius finlandicus females consumed more larvae and protonymphs than the females of T. pyri and K. aberrans. In cages without free water E. finlandicus ate a range of 6.51 larvae or 5.31 protonymphs of T. pyri and 5.27 larvae or 5.95 protonymphs of K. aberrans per female per day. Kampimodromus aberrans and T. pyri females exhibited a greater tendency to prey on heterospecifics than on conspecifics. When feeding on phytoseiid immatures and without free water, T. pyri females survived longer and laid more eggs than the females of E. finlandicus and K. aberrans. Adult females of E. finlandicus and T. pyri having free water and preying on heterospecific protonymphs were able to maintain egg laying during the whole experimental period of 12 days. The females of all three species had difficulties in piercing phytoseiid eggs, and the number of sucked eggs per female per day was low. Kampimodromus aberrans females ate 0.48 eggs of T. pyri daily, which was the highest recorded number. The great tendency to interspecific predation on motile immature phytoseiids by the females of E. finlandicus is discussed with regard to the dominance of this species on deciduous trees and bushes in Austria.  相似文献

A shake-and-wash technique for monitoring the predatory phytoseiid mitesTyphlodromus pyri, Amblyseius finlandicus, and their prey,Panonychus ulmi, Tetranychus urticae andAculus schlechtendali in commercial apple orchards was developed. The removal and recovery of mites from leaves, shoots and spurs is based on agitating the plant material by hand in alcohol and subsequently removing the mites using a separating funnel. The mites are quickly killed and easily washed off the plant material, and are thus well preserved for further study. The technique is more efficient than directly counting the mites on plant material under a dissection microscope and can be easily employed both in the laboratory and in the field.  相似文献

The influences of esfenvalerate on mite behaviour were investigated by image analysis. Video recordings of the locomotory behaviour of two mite species were converted into a series of x,y coordinates that, when joined, closely resembled their paths. These coordinates were used to calculate walking speed, direction of travel, turning frequency, turn bias and tortuosity. Two experimental arenas were used: (1) a leaf disc arena for the European red mite, Panonychus ulmi and (2) a glass coverslip arena for Typhlodromus pyri. The behavioural responses of P. ulmi and T. pyri to esfenvalerate (field rate) indicated that these mites did not show a preference for the unsprayed halves of the arenas during the first 48 min. However, significant differences between most of the behavioural parameters to esfenvalerate residues were found with P. ulmi when whole arenas were compared. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

We looked at the effect of the presence of pollen (Typha latifolia) on the functional response of Typhlodromus pyri (Phytoseiidae) to Panonychus ulmi (Tetranychidae) in the laboratory. We found that pollen significantly reduced the predation rate but that the magnitude of the effect was not large. Over the lower range of prey densities the effect appeared to be due to a decrease in search efficiency.  相似文献

Female parents ofElasmucha dorsalis attend their offspring and show specific sequential defensive behavior when disturbed. Intense responses of brooding females such as wing fanning were usually triggered by exposure to crushed nymphs. Maternal care continued for a long time, sometimes into the fourth or last nymphal instar. Female removal experiments showed that maternal defense is highly effective under field conditions. High egg mortality observed in the field was probably due to the predation by an ant,Myrmica ruginodis, which occurred at high densities on the host plant,Aruncus dioicus. Most of the egg masses were found on the leaves subtending axillary inflorescence of the female plants, and nymphs usually aggregated and fed on fruits in the inflorescence. Because the food of nymphs is temporally limited, the female can produce only a single brood. Thus, temporality of food resources as well as a heavy predation pressure may have led to prolonged maternal care.  相似文献

The phytoseiid mites Metaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) and Typhlodromus pyri Schueten are used together and alone as biological control agents against tetranychid pest mites of apple. Their effectiveness as control agents may be impacted by intraguild predation. The effects of prey species and prey density on the rates of inter- and intraspecific predation and oviposition by these two predators were investigated through a series of experiments. Adult female predators were given prey as mixed populations of phytoseiid larvae and larvae of a more preferred species, the spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, at different densities and ratios. Typhlodromus pyri, more of a generalist predator, showed higher rates of predation and cannibalism on phytoseiid immatures at most prey densities and ratios. Manly preference indices indicated that T. pyri switched to feed on phytoseiid larvae at higher prey levels and ratios of T. urticae than M. occidentalis. This greater ability to use phytoseiid larvae as prey may help stabilize T. pyri populations when more preferred prey is unavailable. This may, in part, explain the observed persistence of T. pyri populations when M. occidentalis populations were decreasing in orchard test plots.  相似文献

The flat-mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes, 1939) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) is considered important in citrus (Citrus spp.) and coffee plants (Coffea spp.) in Brazil, and is known as the leprosis and coffee ring spot mite, as being a vector of the Citrus Leprosis Rhabdovirus - CitLV and Coffee Ring Spot Virus - CoRSV. The objective of this work is to find out about the reproductive success of B. phoenicis on citric fruits and coffee leaves by fertility life table parameters and its biology. The experiments were carried out in laboratory conditions at 25 +/- 2 degrees C, 70 +/- 10% of relative humidity and 14 h of photophase. The lengths of embryonic and post-embryonic periods were different due to the host where the mite was reared. B. phoenicis showed better development and higher survival and fecundity in citric fruits than coffee leaves. The intrinsic rate of the population increase (r(m)) was 0.128 and 0.090 - females/female/day on citric fruits and coffee leaves, respectively. The citric fruits were more appropriate for the development of B. phoenicis than coffee leaves.  相似文献

The juvenile development and survival, and demographic parameters of the predatory mite Neoseiulus cucumeris (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) fed on pollen of castor bean, tulip, apple, Christmas cactus, horse-chestnut, maize, and birch were assessed under laboratory conditions. Deprivation of food and pollen of castor bean plants resulted in 100 % juvenile mite mortality. Feeding mites with tulip and horse-chestnut pollen resulted in the shortest development and the highest total fecundity. Adult mites fed on birch, tulip, maize, and apple pollen lived significantly longer compared with those fed on pollen of horse-chestnut and Christmas cactus. The intrinsic rate of natural increase ranged between 0.1013 ♀♀//day for maize and 0.1806 ♀♀//day for horse-chestnut pollen as food. Net reproductive rate was the lowest when fed with maize pollen and highest when fed with horse-chestnut pollen. Population doubling time was highest on maize pollen and shortest on horse-chestnut pollen. Our study revealed that birch, tulip, horse-chestnut, apple, and maize pollen can be used by N. cucumeris from early spring to late summer as a suitable alternative food in periods when prey in the field are scarce or absent.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of six vineyard pesticides on Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a key predator of the mite Calepitrimerus vitis Nalepa (Acari: Eriophyoidae), in Pacific coastal vineyards. Materials tested were whey powder, 25% boscalid + 13% pyraclostrobin (Pristine), 40% myclobutanil (Rally), micronized sulfur (92% WP), 75% ethylene bisdithiocarbamate (mancozeb; Manzate), and 91.2% paraffinic oil (JMS Stylet), all applied at three concentrations. Pesticide dilutions were directly sprayed onto T. pyri adult females and juveniles, and each treatment was assessed to determine effects on direct mortality and fecundity. Five of the six pesticides tested resulted in < 50% mortality to adult and juvenile T. pyri for all concentrations 7 d after treatment. Paraffinic oil treatments displayed direct mortality > 50% for adult and juvenile assays and resulted in significantly higher mortality. Sublethal effects were more pronounced than acute pesticide toxicity, particularly in juvenile mite bioassays. Significant decreases in fecundity were detected in the sulfur and mancozeb treatments compared with the control in juvenile tests. The relative percentage of fecundity reduction for juvenile mites was highest when applying mancozeb (> 70%), sulfur (> 25%), or myclobutanil (> 20%). Adult mites displayed the greatest reductions in fecundity from applications of paraffinic oil (> 20%) or mancozeb (> 15%) treatments. Boscalid (+ pyraclostrobin) and whey displayed the least effect on fecundity across all bioassays. These results can be used to develop management guidelines in vineyard pest management practices to help conserve and enhance predatory mite populations.  相似文献

Tydeus caudatus (Acari: Tydeidae) can prey upon grape eriophyoid mites but little is known about its alternative foods. Observations carried out during 1999–2003 in a commercial vineyard located in northeastern Italy showed that densities of T. caudatus were often correlated to downy mildew spread on the vegetation. Densities of T. caudatus increased in late summer when downy mildew symptoms occurred on a high number of leaves. The predatory mite Paraseiulus talbii (Acari: Phytoseiidae) increased in late season following the increase of tydeids. On several sampling dates, T. caudatus populations were significantly higher on leaves with downy mildew symptoms than on leaves without symptoms. Tydeid densities were often positively correlated to the extent of leaf surface showing symptoms. These relationships were sometimes found regarding P. talbii. In two experimental vineyards colonised by T. caudatus, untreated plots or plots treated with different fungicides to control downy mildew were monitored during 2002. Downy mildew infections rapidly spread in the control plots while they were effectively controlled on fungicide-treated plots. In both vineyards, T. caudatus densities reached significantly higher densities in the control than on fungicide-treated plots. A field study showed that most of these fungicides did not reduce tydeid populations when downy mildew was virtually absent. Isoelectric-focusing electrophoresis (IEF) was used to detect downy mildew in mites. Glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) was selected from among different enzymes. A high proportion of T. caudatus females, collected from infected leaves, and analysed under IEF showed a GPI isozyme allele corresponding to the downy mildew isozyme in addition to the tydeid intrinsic alleles. This phenomenon was also observed for P. talbii but with a lower incidence. All T. caudatus females confined on symptomatic leaves became positive by IEF after few hours but the same did not occur with P. talbii. A high proportion of P. talbii females became positive after preying on tydeids collected from symptomatic leaves or reared on pollen and then confined on symptomatic leaves.  相似文献

The predation preference of singly caged adult females and nymphs of Typhlodromus pyri and Kampimodromus aberrans for con- or heterospecific immature stages as prey was tested in the laboratory. Both polyphagous predatory mite species have been previously shown to interact directly through predation on each other. The present study demonstrated that the adult females of T. pyri and K. aberrans are able to discriminate between con- and heterospecific larvae and protonymphs and that they prefer to prey upon heterospecifics when given the choice. Hunger did not reduce the propensity of the females to prefer heterospecifics over conspecifics. For proto-and deutonymphs the trends followed the results obtained with the adult females, but the preference for heterospecifics was not distinct enough to be significant. In competitive situations reciprocal predation may be a crucial mechanism in the interaction of polyphagous phytoseiid species and may contribute significantly to population persistence. The results are discussed with regard to possible associations between the ability to discriminate con- and heterospecifics and the type of feeding specialization (generalists versus specialists).  相似文献
