Stem flattening in Rhynchosia pyramidalis (Fabaceae) is achieved by the development of crescent-shaped successive cambia on two opposite sides of the stem (referred hereafter as distal side). Other lateral sides of the stem (adjacent to supporting host and its opposite side, referred as proximal sides) usually possess single cambium. In the young stems, parenchymatous cells located outside to protophloem of distal side dedifferentiate and develop small segments of cambium. Concomitant to bidirectional differentiation of the secondary xylem and phloem, these newly developed cambial segments also extend in tangential directions. Differential activity of newly developed crescent-shaped cambial segments deposits more secondary xylem at median position as compared to their terminal ends of the stem on distal side; consequently, it pushes the cambial segment outside, thus resulting in crescent-shaped arcs of the cambia only on two opposite sides. After the production of 1–2 mm of secondary xylem, they cease to divide and new segments of cambial arc develop on the same side in a similar fashion. Such repeated behaviour of successive cambia development consequently leads to the formation of tangentially flat stems. The secondary xylem is diffusely porous with indistinct growth rings and is composed of vessels (wide and narrow), fibres, axial ray parenchyma cells, while phloem consisted of sieve elements, companion cells, axial and ray parenchyma. Rays in both xylem and phloem are uni- to multiseriate and heterocellular. The structure of secondary xylem and development of successive cambia is correlated with climbing habit.  相似文献

Neotropical climbing rats (Tylomys), offspring of animals from Mexico and Panama, were maintained in the Michigan State University Museum-Live Animal Colony for the purpose of collecting data on reproduction. Vaginal smears indicated an estrous cycle 6.8 +/- 0.4 da under natural winter lighting, 12.0 +/- 2.5 da when exposed to a 12:12 light:dark cycle, and 4.3 +/- 0.3 da when utilizing an activity wheel and under a 14:10 lighting scheme. The earliest recorded mating for a female Tylomys was 90 da of age. The gestation period was 40.6 +/- 0.5 da, and there was no statistical difference between the gestation lengths of lactating and non-lactating females. The average litter size was 2.3 with a range of 1-4. Weight at birth averaged 20.2 +/- 0.3 g, or about 8% (litter about 16%) the weight of the adult. The daily instantaneous rate of growth (weight) for the first wk was about 5.6%. Graphs were presented indicating changes with time of weight, total body length, and tail, hind foot, and ear lengths. Young respond to loud noises at 6-14 da of age, and eye opening occurs slightly later, at 7-15 da of age. The young cling tenaciously to the female's nipples nearly continuously for the first 3 wk. Females did not perform any nest-building activities. Weaning occurred at approximately 3-4 wk of age.  相似文献

The embryology and the seed development of Syngonanthus caulescens are presented. This species possesses: a bithecous and tetrasporangiate anther, with a four-layered wall, a conspicuous endothecium of the baseplate type, a secretory tapetum formed by uninucleate cells, successive microsporogenesis resulting in isobilateral microspore tetrads, spiraperturate and binucleate pollen grains, an orthotropous, pendulous, bitegmic and tenuinucellate ovule, with a micropyle formed only by the inner integument, a megagametophyte of the Polygonum type, with formation of an antipodal cyst, free-nuclear and starchy endosperm, a broad and bell-shaped embryo, operculate and endotestal seeds, a seed coat derived from the inner layers of both integuments, and tanniniferous endotegmen. These embryological aspects are characteristic not only for Syngonanthus, but for the whole family, with few differences between genera. Furthermore, the pollen grain of the spiraperturate type and the cystic arrangement of the antipodals in the megagametophyte are peculiar and very distinctive features of Eriocaulaceae within the other Poales (commelinids).  相似文献

Modification of external morphology and internal structure of plants is a key feature of their successful survival in extreme habitats. They adapt to arid habitats not only by modifying their leaves, but also show several modifications in their conducting system. Therefore, the present study is aimed to investigate the pattern of secondary growth in Leptadenia pyrotechnica (Forssk.) Decne., (Asclepiadaceae), one such species growing in Kachchh district, an arid region of Gujarat State. A single ring of vascular cambium, responsible for radial growth, divided bidirectionally and formed the secondary xylem centripetally and the phloem centrifugally. After a short period of secondary xylem differentiation, small arcs of cambium began to form secondary phloem centripetally instead of secondary xylem. After a short duration of such secondary phloem formation, these segments of cambium resumed their normal function to produce secondary xylem internally. Thus, the phloem strands became embedded within the secondary xylem and formed interxylary phloem islands. Such a recurrent behavior of the vascular cambium resulted in the formation of several patches of interxylary phloem islands. In thick stems the earlier formed non-conducting interxylary phloem showed heavy accumulation of callose on the sieve plates followed by their crushing in response to the addition of new sieve elements. Development of intraxylary phloem is also observed from the cells situated on the pith margin. As secondary growth progresses further, small arcs of internal cambium get initiated between the protoxylem and intraxylary phloem. In the secondary xylem, some of the vessels are exceptionally thick-walled, which may be associated with dry habitats in order to protect the vessel from collapsing during the dryer part of the year. The inter- and intraxylary phloem may also be an adaptive feature to prevent the sieve elements to become non-conducting during summer when the temperature is much higher.  相似文献

Shoots of adult plants of Lilaea scilloides have a sympodial form. Each unit of the sympodium bears a single sheathing prophyll (which is the only kind of foliage leaf produced in the adult) and terminates in an inflorescence. The prophyll subtends the next unit of the sympodium. A further accessory bud can form in association with each unit. This bud repeats the pattern of the main sympodium, giving the plant a tufted habit. Five different kinds of flower can be identified in the inflorescence: a unisexual male flower with a single perianth member and adnate stamen; a bisexual flower, with a single perianth member and adnate stamen, and a single carpel with an anatropous bitegmic ovule; a unisexual female flower with a single perianth member and carpel; a unisexual female flower comprising only a single carpel; and a female flower comprising only a single carpel with a very long filamentous style. The first four kinds occur in the upper part of the inflorescence which is normally elevated on a scape, while the last kind is restricted to the base of the inflorescence. In the position of the basal flowers several variations have been observed in cultivated material. These include branching associated with the basal flowers, which results in the development of additional basal flowers or inflorescences, and even total replacement of a basal flower by an inflorescence or a branching structure bearing flowers. A review of past literature includes a clarification of some persistent errors which have confused the taxonomic position of the plant and the morphological interpretation of the reproductive appendages.  相似文献

The occurrence of flattened stems in Rhynchosia phaseoloides (SW.) DC. (Fabaceae) has been known for years, but little interest has been shown toward elucidating its secondary growth. This study aims to (1) understand the pattern of secondary growth and development of vascular elements from the cambium at different stages of stem growth and (2) elucidate the type, size and distribution of cells related to these processes at different regions of the stem. Dilatation growth in main stems and branches of R. phaseoloides is achieved by successive cambia formed in two areas of the actual cortex that are opposed to each other by approximately 180°. Only the first cambial ring is functionally normal and closed-elliptical in outline, supporting the growth of the middle part of the rather flat stem. Later on, this stem becomes oval to oblong in cross-section outline by the activity of successive cambia from which cells produce further xylem, phloem and parenchyma tissues in a somewhat fan-shaped way. As shown in cross section, a flat cable-like structure of several modules results, forming wings relative to the primary central axis tissues. The secondary cambia are formed by dedifferentiation of cortical parenchyma cells, resulting in small clusters of radially arranged meristematic bands of cells. From these meristematic bands, an outward-facing crescent-shaped new band of cambium is originated. The innermost cells of this meristematic band form the parenchymatic tissue that connects the new lateral module to the proximal one. Amaranthus includes approximately 60 species, of which three are cultivated as a grain source. Many wild Amaranthus species possess agriculturally desirable traits such as drought and salt tolerance, and pathogen resistance. We examined relationships among wild and cultivated Amaranthus species based upon restriction-site variation in two chloroplast DNA regions and in a nuclear DNA region. The chloroplast regions consisted of (1) an intergenic spacer in transfer RNA genes and (2) the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase gene with a flanking open reading frame. The nuclear region was the internal transcribed spacers ITS-1 and ITS-2 flanking the 5.8S gene in the ribosomal DNA. These regions were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and digested with a total of 38 restriction endonucleases. We detected 11 potentially informative restriction-site mutations and seven length-polymorphisms among the 28 Amaranthus species. Parsimony analysis was used to find the shortest tree for each separate data set (chloroplast, nuclear, and length) and for two combined matrices (chloroplast/nuclear and all data sets). Overall, there was a low level of variation which generated poorly resolved trees among the 28 species. Congruence analyses revealed that the chloroplast and nuclear data sets were congruent with each other but not to the length data set. The congruence of the chloroplast and nuclear data sets suggested that cytoplasmic gene flow may not be a confounding factor in our analyses. The phylogeny also suggested that drought tolerance evolved independently several times. The molecular phylogeny provides a basis for selection of species pairs for crop development.  相似文献

The plants belonging to Pfaffia genus are used in folk medicine to treat gastric disturbances. This study examined the effects of an aqueous extract of Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng) Pedersen (AEP) on the gastrointestinal tract. Wistar rats were pretreated orally (p.o.) with the AEP (125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg.kg(-1)) before induction of ulcers by hypothermic restraint stress (HRS, 3 h restraint stress at 4 degrees C), ethanol (ET, 70%; 0.5 ml/animal; p.o.) or indomethacin (IND, 20 mg.kg(-1); s.c.). Control animals received water (C) or ranitidine (60 mg.kg(-1)) p.o. The AEP protected rats against HRS and ET-induced ulcers, but was not able to protect the gastric mucosa against IND-induced ulcers. When injected into the duodenal lumen, the AEP reduced total acidity and both basal and histamine-stimulated acid secretion in pylorus-ligated rats. In addition, gastric secretion from AEP-treated animals exhibited increased concentrations of nitrite and nitrate. Treatment of animals with L-NAME (120 mg.kg(-1), p.o.) prevented both the reduction of total acidity and the increase in NOx levels promoted by AEP treatment. In conclusion, AEP effectively protected the gastric mucosa and inhibited gastric acid secretion in rats, probably by involving the histaminergic pathway and an enhanced production of nitric oxide in the stomach.  相似文献

Stem traits were analysed in laboratory-grown seedlings of 80 European woody and semiwoody species of known potential relative growth rate (RGR) and of similar ontogenetic phase. The objectives were, firstly, to assess the relation between stem structure and plant growth potential and, secondly, to explore how stem structure varies among species differing in life form and leaf habit. Hydraulic conductance was represented by the mean diameter of the widest xylem conduits (Dmax), and structural strength by the percentage of xylem tissue occupied by cell wall material (CWx) or stem tissue density (SD). Across all species RGR showed a weak positive correlation with Dmax and weak negative ones with CWx and SD, with slow-growers showing great dispersion of stem trait values. In the RGR-Dmax relationship this dispersion disappeared when trees were removed from the analysis. None of the relationships were significant among tree species alone. It was suggested that fast-growers require a xylem with wide conduits (high Dmax) to achieve high hydraulic conductivity, and “cheaply” constructed stems (low CWx and SD) to maximise allocation to leaves. However, the possession of such traits does not guarantee fast growth, as other factors may constrain RGR elsewhere in the plant. Deciduous seedlings showed higher Dmax and lower CWx than evergreens. Higher Dmax could reflect an innate higher tolerance of conductivity loss by freeze-induced embolism in deciduous plants, which are not burdened by the maintenance of foliage in winter. In contrast, life forms were differentiated most clearly by SD. For instance, shrub seedlings had less dense stem tissues than tree seedlings, possibly because they need less investment in long-term strength and stature. Summary Data regarding seasonal abundance, microhabitat preference, and diet were collected over 3 field seasons for adults of 15 robber fly species on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. The species comprised 2 distinct thermal guilds; light-seeking (hereafter LS) species foraged in sunlit areas, while shade-seeking (SS) species foraged only in deep shade. All species were rare during the dry season. During the rainy months, most SS species had flight periods of 2–3 months, and no temporal segregation was apparent. In contrast, most LS species had flight periods of only 4–6 weeks, and a distinct sequence of occurrence was evident during 2 years of censusing. Most SS and LS species displayed a pronounced specificity for perches of a particular substrate type. However, the ranges of perching heights utilized varied considerably among species. Dietary comparisons revealed that mean and maximum prey sizes increased with increasing robber fly size, while minimum prey sizes were constant. Robber fly species <20 mg fed primarily upon nematocerous Diptera, whereas larger species generally fed upon a wide variety of prey types. For each thermal guild, the actual mean overlap for a particular niche dimension was compared to mean overlaps generated by randomly assigning species to thermal guilds. No significant differences from the random null hypothesis were found for the SS guild. However, niche complementarity between dietary and spatial overlaps and dietary overlap was apparent among the 5 large LS species.  相似文献

Formicine ants are able to detect slopes in the substrates they crawl on. It was assumed that hair fields between the main segments of the body and between the proximal leg segments contribute to graviception which triggers a change of posture in response to substrate slopes. The sagittal kinematics of two ant species were investigated and compared on different slopes. Cataglyphis fortis, a North African desert ant, is well known for its extraordinary sense of orientation in texturally almost uniform habitats, while Formica pratensis, a common central-European species, primarily uses landmarks and pheromone traces for orientation. A comparison of these two species reveals differences in postural adaptations during inclined locomotion. Only minor slope-dependent angular adjustments were observed. The largest is a 25° head rotation for Cataglyphis, even if the slope is changed by 150°, suggesting dramatic changes in the field of vision. The trunk’s pitch adjustment towards the increasing slope is low in both species. On all slopes Cataglyphis achieves higher running speeds than Formica and displays greater slope-dependent variation in body height. This indicates different strategies for coping with changing slopes. These specific aspects have to be reflected in the ants’ respective mode of slope perception.  相似文献

This study is intended to provide early access to recent findings on the formation of the successive cambia of Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. in Kenya. The non-annual character of the growth layers was demonstrated by using three trees from a cambial marking experiment and three trees from a plantation of known age. The respective number of growth layers produced during one year was on average a half and three. Considering 28 stem disks of trees at three study sites, differing in local site conditions, growth layer development was shown to be strongly correlated with stem diameter (R2=0.84, p<0.0001, n=31). However, an additional influence of the site conditions was also demonstrated (homogeneity-of-slopes model test: F=54.72, p<0.0001, n=28). With increasing salinity and/or inundation class the width of the growth layers decreased. The significance of these variations in growth layer width offer interesting perspectives. The larger proportion of xylem in comparison with phloem in trees with wide as opposed to narrow growth layers may provide extra mechanical strength. On the other hand, the larger fraction of living tissue (phloem and parenchyma) in trees with thin growth layers may be beneficial for the water balance of the tree. Next to the non-annual nature of the growth layers and their networking pattern, more than one cambium was found to be simultaneously active. We conclude that classical dendrochronological methods (ring width measurements) should not be applied to A. marina (from Kenya).  相似文献

This paper provides a new anatomical model for how branches are joined together at forks in trees, using evidence from MicroXCT scanning, ESEM output and visual observation.

Abstract

Wood grain arrangements at the forks and other junctions within a tree must be arranged to mechanically join together the two or more branches, yet not adversely restrict sap flow. The grain orientation at junctions therefore represents a trade-off in xylem performance between the functions of efficient sap conductance and the provision of adequate load-bearing capacity. Initial observations of wood grain orientation were made on the surfaces of several dozen debarked and fractured bifurcations of a wide range of tree species, both by eye and using a scanning electron microscope. Subsequently, small volumes of wood were sampled from two locations within the junctions of hazel, at the junction apex and on the outer section of join. Wood was imaged in 3D using high-resolution X-ray tomography, and the scanned volumes were analysed for their wood grain patterns. It was found that the wood at the junctions of hazel forks contained only 37 % of the number of vessels contained in wood within the adjacent stem. The vessel elements formed at the junctions were only 32.5 % the length of those in the stem, had a mean diameter only 50.5 % of the stem vessels and consequently only 26.3 % of their lumen volume. The passage of the vessels through the fork wood deviated from a straight line (Euclidean) distance by more than 14 times more than the stem wood vessels did. The interweaving of vessels in the fork wood was over 22 times greater than in the stem wood. A survey of rays showed them to be 58 % more abundant in fork wood but only 62 % of the height of rays in the stem wood. These results suggest that where two branches of similar diameter join to form a tree fork, an interlocking wood grain pattern is formed at the apex of the bifurcation, which provides higher tensile strength to the junction. Breaking of the hazel fork requires wood fibres to be stretched axially and broken across, which requires greater stress than breaking normal wood radially or tangentially.  相似文献

The taxonomic history of Anthopterus as it relates to Themistoclesia is briefly reviewed. Anthopterus is redefined to include several species formerly placed in Themistoclesia. Two subgenera are established within Anthopterus. Anthopterus costaricensis Luteyn is described as new, and the new combination Anthopterus pterotus (A. C. Sm.) Luteyn is made. A key to the genus, a list of the species currently accepted, and brief notes on distribution and frequency are provided.
