In most mammalian species, males tend to leave their natal group and disperse farther than females, while females tend to be philopatric. Primates generally follow this rule, although long-term studies of a variety of species are revealing an increasing number of exceptions. This paper reviews dispersal patterns in 3 subspecies of savanna baboons (Papio cynocephalus cynocephalus, P. cynocephalus anubis, P. cynocephalus ursinus) which exhibit very similar patterns of social organization. Males usually disperse from the natal group at 8-10 years of age. Female dispersal is rare but well documented. Inbreeding avoidance as well as enhanced mating opportunities are suggested as ultimate causes of dispersal. Several proximate factors implicated in the timing of dispersal events are also reviewed.  相似文献

Paternal kin discrimination in wild baboons.   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
Mammals commonly avoid mating with maternal kin, probably as a result of selection for inbreeding avoidance. Mating with paternal kin should be selected against for the same reason. However, identifying paternal kin may be more difficult than identifying maternal kin in species where the mother mates with more than one male. Selection should nonetheless favour a mechanism of paternal kin recognition that allows the same level of discrimination among paternal as among maternal kin, but the hypothesis that paternal kin avoid each other as mates is largely untested in large mammals such as primates. Here I report that among wild baboons, Papio cynocephalus, paternal siblings exhibited lower levels of affiliative and sexual behaviour during sexual consortships than non-kin, although paternal siblings were not significantly less likely to consort than non-kin. I also examined age proximity as a possible social cue of paternal relatedness, because age cohorts are likely to be paternal sibships. Pairs born within two years of each other were less likely to engage in sexual consortships than pairs born at greater intervals, and were less affiliative and sexual when they did consort. Age proximity may thus be an important social cue for paternal relatedness, and phenotype matching based on shared paternal traits may play a role as well.  相似文献

Background  There is little information available concerning trichobezoars in the non-human primate literature.
Methods  We evaluated 118 cases of trichobezoar in baboons over a 29-year period at the Southwest National Primate Research Center.
Results  The anatomic locations affected in decreasing order were the stomach, small intestine, cecum, esophagus and colon. The most common clinical history was weight loss. The most frequent associated pathology included gastrointestinal inflammation and ulceration, emaciation, peritonitis, intussusception, pneumonia, and aspiration. Trichobezoars were the cause of death in nine baboons and the reason for euthanasia in 12. Females were 2.14 times more likely than males to be affected. The greater the percentage of group housing time, the more likely the baboon is to develop trichobezoars.
Conclusions  The baboon may present a useful model to evaluate the etiology, genetic predisposition, physiopathology, neurobiology, and treatment response of trichobezoars.  相似文献

As large-bodied savannah primates, baboons have long been of special interest to students of human evolution: many different populations have been studied and dietary comparisons among them are becoming possible. Baboons' foraging strategies can be shown to combine high degrees of flexibility and breadth with selectivity. In this paper we develop and test multivariate models of the basis of diet selection for populations of montane and savannah baboons. Food selection is positively related to protein and lipid content and negatively to fibre, phenolics and alkaloids. Seasonal changes in dietary criteria predicted by these rules are tested and confirmed. Although nutritional bottlenecks occur at intervals, a comparison between long-term nutrient intakes in four different populations indicates convergence on lower degrees of variation than exist in superficial foodstuff profiles.  相似文献

Regularly cycling female baboons were selected and maintained under a diurnal light schedule from 0500 to 1900 hr (CST). Beginning three days prior to the expected LH peak, blood was collected daily at 0800 and 1600 hr for 6 days in 5 baboons under light sedation for radioimmunoassay of plasma LH and estrogen. The plasma level of LH increased linearly and reached a peak in the afternoon of the second day. The peak in plasma estrogen appeared prior to the LH peak. In order to examine the critical period of LH surge in baboons, nembutal was injected daily at 1300 hr beginning a few days prior to expected LH relase. Initial dose of nembutal was 35 mg/kg body weight, but a supplementary dose was later required for a full 5 hours of anesthesia. Blood was collected at 1600 hr from 4 baboons during nembutal injections and after cessation of nembutal injections for radioimmunoassay of plasma LH and estrogen. It was found that nembutal injections suppressed LH release in 2 baboons, and caused a delay of LH release in 2 baboons. However, the plasma level of estrogen declined immediately after initiation of nembutal injection and remained lower. The evidence illustrates the nature of the neural components of LH release which became effective in the afternoon during the ovulatory phase. In addition, a linear increase in plasma level of LH, which is due to accumulation of circulating LH, is necessary for induction of ovulation in baboons.  相似文献

Eight of 19 identified adult females transferred over 7 years in a study of intertroop relations among Papio ursinus at Suikerbosrand. Only one of the eight was cycling at the time of transfer. Five of the seven recent mothers who transferred had lost their infants shortly before transferring. Females who transferred received no more aggression before or after their transfer than females who did not transfer. The most important factors determining this extraordinarily high rate of female transfer include subtrooping and absence of predation.  相似文献

The results of 20-year study of infanticide cases in hamadryas baboon troop of the Sukhumi colony and 10-year observations in Gumista Natural Reserve are presented. The allopatric behaviour which may be the cause of infant death, is shown to be common for 4-7 year old males. In behaviour of older males directed to the infants the elements of aggression predominate. The majority of injuries and infanticide by males takes place in the situations associated with a dominant male change in the group or with the introduction of new females into the groups. In the groups where the social relationships are not fully organized, the appearance of infant leads to decrease of dominant male function and to appropriation of infant by a male and its traumatizing. As a result of infanticide the infants of young 4-7 year old females die most of all. The death of infants commonly occurs during the introduction of young males into the group. The probability of infanticide during the introduction of older males is lower.  相似文献

In a wide variety of animal species, females produce vocalizations just before, during, or immediately after copulation. Observational and experimental evidence indicates that these copulation calls are sexually selected traits, functioning to promote competition between males for access to the calling female. In this paper, we present an acoustic analysis of variation in the form of copulation calls of female yellow baboons, Papio cynocephalus cynocephalus. In particular, we examine whether information about three factors-the calling female's reproductive state, the occurrence or absence of ejaculation, and the dominance rank of the mating male-is encoded in call structure and hence is potentially available to male receivers attending to the signal. Although several features of copulation calls were correlated with each of these factors, when all three were included in multiple regressions only reproductive state and rank of the mating male had independent effects on call form. These findings indicate that female copulation calls in this species signal information about the proximity to ovulation of the calling female and also the relative competitive strength of her mating partner.  相似文献

In normally cycling female baboons, an LH surge appeared prior to ovulation, in addition, another LH surge (postovulatory LH surge) was observed within two days after ovulation. An attempt was then made to determine the effect of postovulatory LH on the luteinization of corpus luteum in baboons. Injections of 300 micrograms estradiol benzoate were given at 09.00 and 16.00 hr daily for 5 days following ovulation; the plasma level of LH was increased, but plasma progestin was suppressed. These results infer that the injected estrogen (estradiol benzoate) may inhibit the luteotrophic effect of postovulatory LH on the corpus luteum, therefore, plasma progestin remains lower even though postovulatory LH is elevated.  相似文献

The wild-type agouti-banding pattern for hair is well characterized in lower mammals such as mice. The switch between eumelanin and pheomelanin in bands in the hair results from the interaction of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone and agouti signal protein through the melanocortin 1 receptor on melanocytes. However, such banding patterns have not been described to date in higher mammals. We now report such 'agouti'-banding patterns that occur in several subspecies of baboons, and characterize those hairs using chemical and immunohistochemical methods. Hair and skin samples were obtained from the dorsa of adult male baboons of different subspecies (Papio cynocephalus hamadryas (PCH) and Papio cynocephalus anubis (PCA)). The hairs were excised with scissors into the gray and the white bands of the PCH subspecies and into the black and the yellow bands of the PCA subspecies, and were analyzed for total melanin, eumelanin, and pheomelanin by spectrophotometric and chemical methods. Hairs in the PCA subspecies oscillate between a eumelanic band (with high melanin content) and a pheomelanic band, while hairs in the PCH subspecies oscillate between a eumelanic band (with low melanin content) and a non-pigmented band. Those chemical data are consistent with the histological appearance of the hair bulbs stained by the Fontana-Masson technique. The difference in the melanin content between PCH and PCA subspecies is most likely related to tyrosinase levels, as suggested by the presence of unpigmented muzzle in the PCH subspecies compared with the black muzzle in the PCA subspecies.  相似文献

Background Gallbladder pathology (GBP) is a relatively uncommon, naturally occurring morbidity in both baboons and humans. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 7776 necropsy reports over a 20 year period to determine the prevalence of baboon GBP. Results Ninety‐seven cases of GBP were identified, yielding a 20 year population prevalence of 1.25%. GBP is more common in adult female baboons, occurring with a female to male ratio of nearly 2:1. Among gallbladder pathologies, cholecystitis (35.1%) and cholelithiasis (29.9%) were the most prevalent abnormalities, followed by hyperplasia (16.5%), edema (15.5%), amyloidosis (5.2%), fibrosis (4.1%), necrosis (4.1%), and hemorrhage (1.0%). Conclusion Many epidemiologic similarities exist between GBP in baboons and humans suggesting that the baboon may serve as a reliable animal model system for investigating GBP in humans.  相似文献

Interactions between adult males and infants may have important consequences not only for males and infants, but also for mothers. Considerable attention has been paid to interactions that involve two males and an infant. Investigators have proposed three different general strategies to account for this behavior: (a) exploitation of the infant for one male’s advantage, (b) protection of the infant from harassment and aggression, and (c) development of relationships with the infant’s mother. We review various accounts of these interactions, detail the hypotheses used to explain the behavior, make predictions derived from the hypotheses, and evaluate available data for testing the predictions. We conclude that multiple factors are probably at work, but the development of social relations between a male and an infant’s mother is a central force.  相似文献

The antithrombin III-heparin cofactor activity of 65 baboons and 130 healthy human subjects was measured. The results indicate that antithrombin III-heparin cofactor activity is significantly lower in baboons than in humans. The increased activity of the coagulation system of baboon is coupled with decreased antithrombin III-heparin cofactor activity. In humans each of these changes is associated with increased risk of thrombosis, but the baboon has a very low risk of developing thrombosis. Other factors probably balance the coagulation-coagulation inhibition systems in baboons.  相似文献
