Waterstriders (Gerris paludum) often try to maintain a nearly stationary position on a moving water surface. Passive motion is restricted to 3 degrees of freedom: yaw, longitudinal, and transverse displacement. They correct for passive rotation and translation by distinct behavioral sequences. The compensatory behavior is predominantly visually controlled.
1.  When waterstriders are rotated and translated simultaneously, they are able to discriminate their own rotation and translation visually.
2.  They discriminate their rotation from their translation even if the visible pattern is restricted to a monocular visual field.
3.  They detect rotation only if they see an extended pattern.
The restriction of degreess of freedom reduces the complexity of the motion-induced visual flow field. Each motion component induces its own flow field component. We propose that those areas of the visual field are preferred for analysis where the directions of the 3 flow field components differ most. These areas (Figs. 2 and 3) have their largest extent at 45° above the horizon.  相似文献

In response female pheromone the male gypsy moth flies a zigzagging path upwind to locate the source of odor. He determines wind direction visually. To learn more about the mechanism underlying this behavior, we studied descending interneurons with dye-filled micro-electrodes. We studied the interneuronal responses to combinations of pheromone and visual stimuli.
1.  We recorded 5 neurons whose directionally selective visual responses to wide field pattern movement were amplified by pheromone (Figs. 2–6).
2.  The activity of the above neurons was more closely correlated with the position of the moving pattern than with its velocity (Fig. 4).
3.  One neuron showed no clearly directional visual response and no response to pheromone. Yet in the presence of pheromone it showed directionally selective visual responses (Fig. 6).
4.  We recorded 4 neurons whose directionally selective visual responses were not modulated by pheromone (Fig. 7), ruling out the possibility that the effect of the pheromone was simply to raise the activity of all visual neurons.
5.  Our results suggest that female pheromone amplifies some neural pathways mediating male optomotor responses, especially the directionally selective responses to the transverse movement of the image, both below and above the animal.

1.  Locusts (Locusta migratoria) flying under open-loop conditions respond to simulated course deviations (movements of an artificial horizon around the roll axis) with compensatory head movements and with steering reactions of wing muscles (Figs. 3, 4). Steering was quantified as shifts of the relative latency between spikes in the left and right M97 (first basalar muscle). For practical reasons these shifts are a more useful measure than corrective torque itself, to which they are linearly proportional over much of the range (Fig. 2).
2.  Steering in M97 is elicited visually (horizon movement) and by proprioceptive input reporting head movements (neck reflexes). Compensatory head movements reduce the strength of steering because the reduction in visual information signalling deviations is only partially balanced by proprioceptive input from the neck (Fig. 4C).
3.  Under closed-loop conditions, flying locusts stabilize the position of an artificial horizon against a constant bias (Figs. 5–7), the horizon oscillating slightly along the normal orientation. Head movements do not follow the horizon movements as closely as under open-loop conditions, but on average head movements are compensatory, i.e. the mean mismatch between head and horizon is less than the mean mismatch between body and horizon.
4.  The horizon position is stabilized when the head is free to move, but also when the head is immobilized. In the latter case the oscillations along the straight flight path are more pronounced (Fig. 7), indicating that the reduction of steering by compensatory head movements (as seen under open-loop conditions, Fig. 4C) reduces overshoot.
5.  The control and the significance of (compensatory) head movements for course control are discussed.

1.  We recorded compensatory eye stalk movements in response to pitch and roll stimulation of the visual, statocyst, and leg-proprioceptive systems in different species of crabs (Carcinus maenas, Heloecius cordiformis, Pachygrapsus marmoratus) (Fig. 2).
2.  The relative contribution of visual, statocyst and leg-proprioceptive inputs to eye stabilization in space varies greatly among different species (Fig. 3).
3.  We suggest that for stabilizing the eyes in space, the contribution of various sensory inputs in different species of crabs correspond to the availability of cues in their habitat. Semiterrestrial crabs living in a habitat with well defined and predictable visual geometry stabilize their eye stalks mainly by visual cues. Crabs living on solid substrate make strong use of leg proprioceptive input. Swimming crabs, and other predominantly aquatic crabs, rely mainly on their statocysts.

1.  Wildtype Oregon-R Drosophila melanogaster were trained in the ambient magnetic field to a horizontal gradient of 365 nm light emanating from one of the 4 cardinal compass directions and were subsequently tested in a visually-symmetrical, radial 8-arm maze in which the magnetic field alignment could be varied. When tested under 365 nm light, flies exhibited consistent magnetic compass orientation in the direction from which light had emanated in training.
2.  When the data were analyzed by sex, males exhibited a strong and consistent magnetic compass response while females were randomly oriented with respect to the magnetic field.
3.  When tested under 500 nm light of the same quantal flux, females were again randomly oriented with respect to the magnetic field, while males exhibited a 90° clockwise shift in magnetic compass orientation relative to the trained direction.
4.  This wavelength-dependent shift in the direction of magnetic compass orientation suggests that Drosophila may utilize a light-dependent magnetic compass similar to that demonstrated previously in an amphibian. However, the data do not exclude the alternative hypothesis that a change in the wavelength of light has a non-specific effect on the flies' behavior, i.e., causing the flies to exhibit a different form of magnetic orientation behavior.

1.  Paramecium bursaria was stimulated by a light spot of 10–15 m diameter, and the photosensitive site was searched by recording responses in swimming behavior and in membrane potential.
2.  Local stimulation to the anterior half of the cell caused an avoiding response.
3.  Stimulation to the cells deciliated by ethanol treatment elicited a depolarization of the membrane potential.
4.  Local stimulation to the anteroventral portion elicited a depolarization, but stimulation to the dorsal side induced no change in the membrane potential.
5.  The action spectrum of depolarization elicited by local stimulation to the anteroventral surface showed two main peaks at 420 nm and 560 nm, corresponding to those of light stimulation of the whole cell.
6.  It is concluded that a photosensitive site exists on the anteroventral surface ofParamecium, in particular within the oral groove of the cell. This local photosensitivity is discussed with respect to the mating reaction.

1.  The actions of GABA on three classes of visual interneurons in crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, medulla externa are examined. The effect of GABA on the visual response is compared to GABA's action on agonist-elicited responses purported to mediate the visual response.
2.  GABA produces a shunting type of inhibition in medullary amacrine cells which is associated with a small depolarization (Figs. 2, 3), a large increase in input conductance (Gn) and a reversal potential close to rest (Fig. 4). GABA is a potent antagonist to the depolarizing action of acetylcholine (ACh) (Fig. 5).
3.  GABA depolarizes dimming fibers (Fig. 2), and the response is mediated by an increase in Gn (Fig. 6). GABA antagonizes the light-elicited IPSP and the hyperpolarizing action of ACh (Fig. 7).
4.  Sustaining fibers (SF) do not appear to have GABA receptors but GABA inhibits the excitatory visual input pathway to the SFs (Fig. 8). Conversely, the GABA antagonist, bicuculline, potentiates the SF light response (Fig. 9).
5.  GABA has at least three different modes of antagonist action in the medulla: i) Increased conductance and depolarization in dimming fibers and medullary amacrine neurons; ii) Decreased chloride conductance in tangential cells; and iii) An inhibitory action on the visual pathway which drives SFs.

1.  While collecting nectar in hovering flight the European hawk moth Macroglossum stellatarum efficiently regulates its distance relative to flowers that are shaken by wind. This can be demonstrated in laboratory experiments by moving dummy flowers (blue cardboard disks) towards and away from the feeding animal (Fig. 1).
2.  Distance regulation is predominantly mediated by visual cues. Mechanoreceptors on the proboscis appear to contribute little to the response.
3.  Movements of dummy flowers can be simulated by expanding and contracting a pattern projected onto a screen. With this technique we investigated the dynamical properties of the servo mechanism underlying distance regulation. The system behaves as a bandpass filter with corner frequencies of 0.15 and 5 Hz (Figs.2,3).
4.  When a high-speed ramp-like movement of the flower is simulated, there is an asymmetry in the response. During simulated approach the reaction is phasic-tonic with a pronounced overshoot at the beginning, during simulated retraction it remains tonic (Fig.5B,C).
5.  During distance regulation the animals compensate for the speed of the edge of the projected pattern. Distance regulation improves substantially when the number of stimulated elementary movement detectors is increased through increasing the number of contour lines by projecting concentric rings instead of a homogeneous disk (Figs.7, 8).

In recent years anthropologists have made much progress in understanding ancient activities from skeletal remains. In this paper, material from the Iron Age cemetery at Pontecagnano (VII-IV century BC) is used to illustrate activity-related traits of eight basic categories:
(1)  idiosyncratic patterns of dental wear
(2)  activity-related articular degeneration
(3)  non-pathological functional alterations (neoformations, contact facets)
(4)  mechanical remodelling of bone architecture
(5)  enthesopathies (muscular lesions)
(6)  traumatic lesions
(7)  activity-related pathologies
(8)  activity-related nutritional characteristics
These traits, and others, can be used not only singly but in conjunction to define (a) patterns of activity and occupational specialization for individuals, and (b) distributions within society reflecting the basic division of labor by geneder and class.  相似文献

1.  If the eyes of young chickens are deprived of clear vision by translucent occluders, they develop considerable amounts of axial myopia within days. At the same time, the day time retinal dopamine levels drop by about 30%. Because the retinal dopamine levels of normally sighted chicks also differ diurnally and are low at night, we expected that the rate of axial eye growth might also differ during this time.
2.  Unexpectedly, eyes grew in length only during the day (about 0.13 mm/day) and even shrank during the night (about -0.04 mm/night, average net growth + 0.09 mm in 24 h).
3.  If the eyes were occluded, they grew both during the day and also at night (average net growth: + 0.16 mm in 24 h). Therefore, development of deprivation myopia was a result of the lack of growth inhibition at night rather than of excessive growth during the day when the actual deprivation occurred.
4.  Suppression of dopaminergic retinal pathways by intravitreal injections of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxy-dopamine (6-OHDA) also suppressed development of deprivation myopia and it restored the growth inhibition at night. With normal visual experience, the drug had no effect on axial eye growth and refractive state.
5.  Diurnal growth rhythms of the eyes disappeared under continuous light.
6.  Our results show that: (a) normal diurnal eye growth rhythms require a normal (12/12 h) light cycle and normal visual experience; with a degraded retinal image during the day, growth rates at night change so that they relate to retinal dopamine levels in the opposite way as with normal visual experience, (b) intact retinal dopaminergic pathways are necessary to mediate the deprivation-induced alterations in diurnal growth rhythms and myopia, (c) deprivation myopia is not simply a result of the lack of visual feedback control of eye growth during deprivation but rather of an active process related to abnormal diurnal dopamine rhythms.

The present review describes the effects of light on reproductive processes in fungi, mainly when action spectra are available. The study of these has resulted in three kinds of photoresponses observable in fungi:
–  responses only to UV light (230–380 nm)
–  responses to NUV and blue light (300–520nm)
–  responses to great wavelengths of the visible spectrum. The photomorphogenetic processes on the control of these same photoreceptor pigments are reviewed.

1.  Umbrellar fragments of the leptomedusaCampanularia johnstoni with or without parts of the radial canal demonstrate a gradient in the potential for manubrium regeneration and in regeneration time.
2.  Implantation experiments exclude the manubrium as a source of inhibition or induction in the regeneration of another manubrium. One special case of inhibition appears to be due to competition for a common substrate.
3.  Medusa fragments consisting of only peripheral umbrella (C-fragments) undergo a considerably different restitution process as compared with fragments including a central portion of the umbrella (A-fragments). Vital stain is seen to disperse in the subumbrellar tissues during this process in C-fragments, whereas vital stain in A-fragments is observed to accumulate and later on is incorporated into the regenerating manubrium.
4.  The mesogloea of different-sized A-fragments retains a stable form when freed of its adhering cellular components, after a 12–24 h regeneration period; for C-fragments, however, the same result is not observed until 72 to 96 h after their excision.
5.  InPodocoryne carnea the observed gradients in manubrium regeneration can be abolished when the subumbrellar tissues are separated from the mesogloea by collagenase treatment.
6.  A model for manubrium regeneration in interradial fragments, based on the influence of tension exerted by the cicatrization process and the counteracting mesogloeal force, is presented and discussed.

1.  Most Purkinje neurons show ongoing spike activity. In approximately 75%, this activity disappeared after peduncle lesion and in some of these the activity stopped when water flow over the gills was interrupted. Approximately one-fourth of Purkinje cells (PC's) showed continuing ongoing activity after afferent input was abolished.
2.  Stimulation of spinal cord elicited both simple spikes, mainly in ipsilateral PC's, and some complex responses (via climbing fibers) usually contralateral and of longer latency than the simple spikes.
3.  Tactile stimulation of skin and flexion of tail or fins, also lateral line stimulation by a water stream, evoked bursts of spikes in PC-s. Input was by mossy fibers and mechanoreceptive fields were large.
4.  Stimulation of vestibular nerve produced both simple and complex responses in PC's. Auditory stimuli were most effective at 800–1200 Hz in eliciting responses via mossy fibers. Responses to sound were phasic changes in ongoing frequency, bursts followed by inhibition or on-off excitation.
5.  Responses to visual stimuli were recorded in granule cells and Purkinje cells, also in mossy axons. Many PC's showed excitatory-inhibitory sequences; a few climbing fiber responses were recorded. The mossy fiber visual input is from optic tectum relay.
6.  Some PC's were activated by two or three sensory modalities.

3DFS is a 3D flexible searching system for lead discovery. Version 1.0 of 3DFS was published recently (Wang, T.; Zhou, J. J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci., 1998, 38, 71–77). Here version 1.2 represents a substantial improvement over version 1.0. There are six major changes in version 1.2 compared to version 1.0.
1.  A new rule of aromatic ring recognition.
2.  The inclusion of multiple-type atoms and chains in queries.
3.  The inclusion of more spatial constraints, especially the directions of lone pairs.
4.  The improvement of the query file format.
5.  The addition of genetic search for flexible search.
6.  An output option for generating MOLfiles of hits.
Besides the above, this paper supplies:
1.  More query examples.
2.  A comparison between genetic search and Powell optimization.
3.  More detailed comparison between 3DFS and Chem-X.
4.  A preliminary application of 3DFS to K+ channel opener studies.

Evidence is presented here from experiments on the visual system of the fly that questions participation of the large monopolar cells (LMCs) in the optomotor response.
1.  The response of a directionally-selective motion-detecting neuron (H1) in the lobula plate to small sudden jumps of a grating is directionally-selective (Fig. 1), indicating that at least one of the inputs to each of the elementary movement detectors (EMD) that feed into H1 must deliver a tonic signal. The responses of LMCs to the same stimulus are, however, entirely phasic (Fig. 2).
2.  In dual electrode experiments on Eristalis, injection of current into an LMC does not change the spiking rate of H1. Induction of spiking activity, or injection of current into an LMC, which alters the cell's response to a flash of light from a point source, does not affect the response of H1 to the same flash (Figs. 3, 4).
3.  The temporal properties of LMCs differ markedly from those of the optomotor response and of directionally-selective movement — detecting neurons in the lobula plate (Figs. 6, 9).
4.  There is poor correlation between LMC degeneration and the strength of the optomotor response in a mutant of Drosophila (Fig. 8).
5.  The optomotor response of Drosophila is strongly polarization sensitive, but Drosophila LMCs show no polarization sensitivity (Fig. 11).
While our results do not exclude the participation of the LMCs in the optomotor response, they do indicate that at least one other lamina channel that is tonic and/ or polarization sensitive must be involved.  相似文献

(1)  The aminoesters inhibit glucose-stimulated proton extrusion by yeast cells.
(2)  The inhibitory activity depends on aliphatic carbon chain length.
(3)  The inhibition of proton extrusion is concentration-dependent.
(4)  The aminoesters stimulate quinacrine accumulation in vacuoles of yeast cells so they should possess affinities for lysosomes.

1.  Non-visual sensory systems are likely to be important in antarctic fish since these fish inhabit an area where low light levels occur for long periods. This study was undertaken to examine the suitability of the lateral line system for prey detection.
2.  Recordings were made from afferent fibres of the anterior lateral line in the antarctic fishPagothenia borchgrevinki.
3.  A vibrating probe was used to stimulate the lateral line at a range of frequencies between 10 and 100 Hz.
4.  Most units responded best at a stimulus frequency of 40 Hz. Below the best frequency the response typically declined steeply and at higher frequencies it was usually better sustained.
5.  Crustacea identified as major components of the diet ofPagothenia borchgrevinki were individually attached to a force transducer to determine the vibrations produced by swimming movements.
6.  The Fourier amplitude spectra of swimming crustaceans exhibited prominent low frequency peaks at 3–6 Hz and higher frequency peaks in the 30–40 Hz range.
7.  It is concluded that the overlap in the frequency response characteristics of the anterior lateral line and the frequencies produced by crustacean prey clearly establishes the suitability of the lateral line for prey detection.
8.  In several instances recordings were made from fish primary afferent neurons responding to a swimming amphipod. These recordings confirm that crustacean swimming is indeed a potent natural stimulus of the lateral line system.

1.  We have discovered a previously unreported visual mutant of the blowfly,Calliphora erythrocephala. It shows a reduced or absent visual performance, e.g., in escape and optomotor behavior. The effects of this mutation on the ultrastructure were studied by electron microscopy (Figs. 3–8) and on electrophysiological function, by intracellular recordings (Figs. 1 and 2).
2.  The genetic basis of this spontaneous mutation was studied by test crosses of mutant and wild-type flies. The defect appears to be in an autosomal recessive gene (Table 1).
3.  Of the mutant stock studied soon after eclosion (n = 18) 35% shows optomotor reactions, whereas only 6% studied in later life (n = 240) shows any optomotor behavior.
4.  The absence of the receptor potentials in photoreceptor cells is not directly associated with structural disorders in the early life of these mutant flies, but several types of degenerative changes are manifested in the retinular cells later on. The optomotorically blind specimens have normal (about –60 mV) resting membrane voltages but no detectable receptor cell voltage response to light, indicating a block in phototransduction. The spectral and polarization sensitivities of optomotor-positive flies are normal (Fig. 2).
5.  At the beginning of degeneration the number of lysosomes in the receptor cells is increased compared with normal flies, but their number as well as that of other components of the cell interior decrease later on. During the progression of the degeneration, the rhabdomeres shrink while the mitochondria swell and disintegrate (Figs. 6–8).
6.  The blocking of phototransduction is proposed to lead to disturbance of the turnover of the rhabdomeres and finally to degeneration of the receptor cells.

In the rift valley (North-East of France/South-West of Germany), the Rhine runs freely for 300 km from South to North. The absence of natural obstacles allows the development of a very regular profile of the river. We have therefore an opportunity to study very gradual modifications of the alluvial forest communities of the fluvial corridor from upstream to downstream, according to the gradual evolution of the ecological factors, related to slope decrease and hydrological modifications. We describe, from Basel to Mainz:
1)  modification of dynamic processes in the forest communities such as successional sequences or sylvigenetic mosaïcs of the terminal stages.
2)  modification of species richness.
3)  reduction of species diversity.
4)  simplification of the forest stratification.
5)  modification of efficiency of the biogeochemical cycling.
6)  ecological vicariances.
7)  modification in species behaviour.
