SUMMARY. From 16 air-lift samplers described in the literature, three were selected for operation from a small boat: Mackey, Pearson et al. and Verollet & Tachet samplers. Random samples (number of sampling units n= 10) were taken in a large tank with a known number of dried peas, representing invertebrates, amongst stones of uniform size. Separate experiments were performed with three sizes of stones (modal sizes 2–4, 16–20 and 32–36 mm). Stratified-random samples (usually n= 10) were taken in rivers at lour sites with modal particle sizes of < 0.1 2–4. 32–128 and 64–128 mm. The samplers were compared with a Ponar grab in the tank experiments and the field, and with a Naturalist's dredge in the field. Rates of pumping at different air-flows were established for each sampler. Water-How increased with increasing air-How and increasing submergence of the riser-pipe. The Mackey sampler achieved the highest water-flow and lifted more substratum and larger stones (64–128 mm) than the other samplers. The Verollet & Tachet sampler had the lowest pumping rate and failed to lift stones > 8 mm long, whilst the Pearson et al. sampler, with an intermediate performance, lifted mud and stones < 32 mm long. In the tank experiments, the area from which the Mackey and Pearson et al. samplers collected peas varied with air-flow, operating time and type of substratum. The Maekey sampler over-sampled and the Pearson et al. sampler usually under-sampled their respective sampling areas, except the latter sampler at high air-flows gave approximately quantitative results comparable to those of the Ponar grab for peas on the surface of stones 16–20 mm. No sampler collected much at a depth of 3 cm on larger stones (32–36 mm), and the Verollet & Tachet sampler failed completely on all substrata. In field trials, the Mackey and Pearson et al. samplers provided good qualitative samples except on large stones (32–128mm). The Verollet & Tachet sampler lifted little material. The relative abundance of taxa often differed between samplers. Estimates of the number of invertebrates per m2 differed widely between samplers except for the Pearson et al. and Ponar grab which gave similar quantitative results at three sites. Values were very low for the Verollet & Tachet sampler and Naturalist's dredge and always very high for the Mackey sampler which often grossly over-sampled its sampling area. Therefore, these three samplers cannot be considered as quantitative. The relationship between the variances and the means of samples of peas in the tank and most invertebrates in the field followed a power law with values of the exponent b in the range 1.13–2.51. The present study completes the evaluation of 14 samplers used to sample benthic macro-invertebrates in deep rivers, and the more important conclusions from the comparative studies of seven grabs, four dredges and three air-lift samplers are summarized in a table.  相似文献

SUMMARY. After considering the large number of grabs described in the literature, seven grabs of weight < 25 kg were chosen for manual operation from a small boat: Van-Veen grab, weighted and unweighted Ponar grabs, Friedinger version of the Petersen grab, Dietz-La Fond mud-snapper, pole-operated Birge-Ekman grab and pole-operated Allan grab. Random samples (number of sampling units n= 10) were taken in a large tank with a known number of 2-mm cylindrical plastic pellets amongst stones of uniform size. Separate experiments were performed with four sizes of stones (model ranges: 2–4 mm, 8–16 mm, 16–32 mm, 32–64 mm). Stratified random samples (n= 10) were taken in rivers and the modal particle sizes at four sites were 0.004–0.06 mm, 0.5–2 mm, 16–64 mm and 64–128 mm. All grabs usually took a representative sample of the substratum at each site with no strong bias towards a particular particle size. The general performance of the Friedinger, Dietz-La Fond and Allan grabs was poor, except on a muddy bottom, with frequent failure to operate, small samples of substratum and a mean depth of penetration < 3 cm in all substrata except mud for the Dietz-La Fond and Allan grabs. The Van-Veen and Birge-Ekman grabs sampled to a mean depth < 3 cm in mud and fine gravel (2–4 mm), but the Birge-Ekman jammed frequently in fine gravel. Both Ponar grabs operated well and sampled to a mean depth ≥ 5 cm in mud and fine gravel, > 3 cm when small stones (8–16 mm) were present and 2 cm (weighted Ponar only) when larger stones (> 16 mm) were present in a gravel bottom. The mean depth was <0.8 cm for all grabs when larger stones (>16 mm) were predominant on the bottom. In the tank experiments with pellets, the efficiencies for the total catches of the Friedinger, Dietz-La Fond and Allan grabs were low with values <45% for fine gravel (2–4 mm), < 22% for small stones (8–16 mm) and <5% for a substratum of larger stones (>16 mm). If 50% is the minimum acceptable efficiency, then the Ponar, Van-Veen and Birge-Ekman grabs were adequate for fine gravel, only the two Ponar grabs were adequate for small stones and no grabs were adequate for sampling a substratum of larger stones (>16 mm). In field trials, the relative abundances of major taxa were similar for most grabs at each site; Friedinger and Dietz-La Fond grabs were the major exceptions. In terms of both mean number of taxa and mean number of invertebrates m?2 the Ponar, Birge-Ekman and Allan grabs performed well on the predominantly muddy substratum at site 1, but only the weighted Ponar grab performed adequately on the predominantly gravel bottom with some large stones (>16 mm) at site 2. All grabs performed badly when larger stones (>16 mm) were predominant on the bottom (sites 3, 4). The relationship between the variances and means of the samples taken with each grab followed a power law for the catches of pellets in tank experiments, and for major taxa and total numbers at each site in field trials. Values of exponents in the power law lay within the range 1.14–2.34. The coefficient of variation was also frequently related to the sample mean and was an unreliable statistic for comparing the precision of grabs.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. As three previous comparative studies of deep-water samplers for benthic macroinvertebrates in rivers highlighted the need for a quantitative sampler for use on stony substrata, a new air-lift sampler was developed. It can be operated from a small boat by two people, weighs 13.5–20.0 kg, depending on the length of riser used, and extends the maximum range of substrata that may be sampled quantitatively from 16–32 mm to 128—256 mm. The sampling area is isolated by forcing a collecting cylinder into the substratum, and rapid evacuation of the contents is assisted by a vibrator.
2. All the major specifications of the sampler were determined experimentally in a large tank using three sizes of substrata and plastic pellets to represent invertebrates. The sampler performed accurately to a depth of at least 8 cm on substrata ranging from gravel (2–4 mm) to large stones (32–36 mm long).
3. The performance of the sampler was compared with that of a Ponar grab and Pearson el at. air-lift sampler at two sites on a large river and also with a Naturalist's dredge and a diver-operated Hess-Waters sampler at one of the sites where there were large stones up to 280 mm long. In terms of both mean taxa per sample and mean numbers m−2, samples taken using the new air-lift sampler provided estimates comparable to or belter than those obtained with the other samplers.  相似文献

Modified dredges were used on Aequipecten opercularis (queen scallop) fishing grounds off the Isle of Man in the north Irish Sea to determine seasonal variability in swimming behaviour in queen scallops and its effect on dredge fisheries. Scallops, which evaded dredge capture by swimming up into the water column, were captured by a specially designed net deployed above the dredge gear. The gear was used over a 20-month period and the number and size distribution of queen scallops captured in both the net and dredges were recorded. A subsample of captured scallops was maintained in running seawater tanks and used to assess two components of swimming behaviour, the time taken to respond to stimuli and the number of valve adductions carried out until exhaustion. There was considerable seasonal variability in the proportion of queen scallops that avoided dredge capture by swimming. Very low numbers of queen scallops were found in the net during the winter and spring. Net capture increased in June, and was high throughout the summer and autumn when up to 42% of scallops greater than 55 mm in height, captured in dredges, swam over the dredge mouths. There was a strong positive correlation between seawater temperature and proportion of captured scallops found in the net. Swimming experiments in the laboratory indicated that the observed seasonal variability in net capture was probably a result of changes in the time taken to respond to stimuli, rather than changes in the ability to perform a large number of valve adductions. There was no relationship between reproductive state and the proportion of actively swimming scallops. Analyses of size distributions indicated limited swimming activity in the largest scallops but no effect of epifaunal load was found on the ability of scallops to avoid dredge capture.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Colonizing aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected from two kinds of artificial substrate placed on wing dams in Pool 13 of the Upper Mississippi River in September 1978. Thirty-one taxa were collected from basket samplers containing cement spheres and twenty-one taxa from multiplate samplers constructed from tempered hardboard. Hydro-psychidae (Trichoptera), especially Cheumatopsyche sp., Potamyla flava and Hydropsyche sp., were the dominant macroinvertebrates which colonized both samplers. Basket samplers had a significantly greater macroinvertebrate density, biomass and number of taxa compared with multiplate samplers. Precision of the arithmetic mean for density, biomass and number of taxa was 19.9, 18.3 and 8.1% for basket samplers and 18.8, 18.7 and 8.5% for multiplate samplers. The number of sampling units required for a precision of 20% for macroinvertebrate density, biomass and number of taxa was 13, 11 and 2 for basket samplers and 11, 11 and 2 for multiplate samplers. Basket samplers with 7.5-cm cement spheres are recommended for use instead of multiplate samplers.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The influence of exposure time upon macro-invertebrate colonization on modified Hester-Dendy substrate samplers was investigated over a 60-day period. The duration of exposure affected the number of individuals, taxa and community diversity.
The numbers of individuals colonizing the samplers reached a maximum after 39 days and then began to decrease, due to the emergence of adult insects. Coefficients of variation for the four replicate samples retrieved each sampling day fluctuated extensively throughout the study. No tendencies toward increasing or decreasing coefficients of variation were noted with increasing time of sampler exposure.
The number of taxa colonizing the samplers increased throughout the study period. The community diversity index was calculated for each sampling day and this function tended to increase throughout the same period. This supports the hypothesis that an exposure period of 6 weeks, as recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, may not always provide adequate opportunity for a truly representative community of macro-invertebrates to colonize multiplate samplers.
Many of the taxa were collected in quite substantial proportions after periods of absence or extreme sparseness. This is attributed to the growth of periphyton and the collection of other materials that created food and new habitats suitable for the colonization of new taxa.
Investigation of the relationship between 'equitability' and length of exposure revealed that equitability did not vary like diversity with increased time of exposure.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Plastic cages containing artificial substrata were placed on the stony bottom of a stream in a section where the environmental conditions appeared to be homogeneous. The section was divided into eight equal sub-sections (A-H) and four cages were placed in each sub-section. The stone-size of the artificial substrata was similar within each cage but differed between the four cages with average diameters of 14, 24, 48 and 96 mm, respectively. The baskets were removed one month later and the catches of macro-invertebrates were recorded.
Analysis of the catches (density and number of taxa in each cage) revealed no significant differences in connection with the position of the cages in the section of stream. Cages with 48-mm stones contained the least abundant fauna. The taxa which colonized cages with 14- or 24-mrn stones were more numerous than those collected from cages with 48- or 96-mm stones.
Statistical analysis by laxon confirmed the preceding results. Variability in connection with the position of the cages along the section of stream was never significant. A little more than half the taxa were distributed independently of stone size but always showed a contagious type distribution. The density of the other taxa was higher, either in cages with 14- or 24-mm stones (particularly Gammarus ) or only in cages with 96-mm stones (especially Hydropsyche ). Only one taxon was more abundant in cages with 48-mm stones, the type of substratum in which the overall density was lowest.
Catches in the cages were not the same as those taken with a Surber sampler because the two samplers did not take samples from the same habitats and also because the baskets offered a more specialized habitat than the surrounding bottom. The basket with 24-mm stones gave the least distorted picture of the natural population.  相似文献

In order to estimate the water quality of S?o Pedro stream, through distribution and composition of Chironomidae larvae present in the sediment four sampling sites were selected. In each sampling site, three sediment samples were collected within a period of twelve months using the Petersen (0.0189 m2) and the van Veen (0.0518 m2) dredges. Samples were washed through a sieve with a 0.21 mm mesh and the collected organisms were sorted in transparent trays, with a light shine being reflected into the tray. The sites located in the greatest urban mesh showed high densities of the genus Chironomus and lower values for diversity, uniformity and taxa richness, in relation to sites located in a less urbanized area. A significant difference in density of Chironomidae larvae (p = 0.02; H = 5.89) was observed between the sites without domestic sewage effluents (site I) and those with the input of the effluents (sites II, III and IV). The Chironomidae larvae composition and the physical and chemical parameters were effective as indicators of the environmental alterations in S?o Pedro stream.  相似文献

In the 2 weeks before estrus, pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) females on the National Bison Range in northwestern Montana, USA usually move actively among several widely spaced, mature, site‐faithful males in a mate search process that identifies vigorous mates. Typically, at least 90% of females practice this active sampling each year; each of the remaining females moves, before the rut begins, to a peripheral, isolated location with a single male and mates there without sampling. In 2001 and 2002, 90 and 100% of females, respectively, used the sampling strategy. The summer of 2003 was unusually hot and dry in western Montana. By September, when the pronghorn rut occurs, many pronghorn females were in visibly poor condition. In the winter that followed, 38% of females and 79% of males died, and in the following spring, only 17% of the surviving females gave birth. In the rut of 2003, 19% of females practiced the active sampling strategy. In 2004, 68% of females attempted to sample, even though there were only three mature males in the population. Among females that sampled, the number of switches away from harems and the number of males visited did not vary across years, except in 2004. The proportion of samplers in 2003 that died over winter was not different from the proportion of non‐samplers that died over winter, and among the survivors, the proportion of samplers that completed gestation was not different from the proportion of non‐samplers that completed gestation. The data suggest that pronghorn females have a strong motivation to sample potential mates, that sampling is abandoned when energy stores are low, and that yearly variation in the percent of females that sample is explained by variation in female condition.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The EC Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) recognises the need for biological monitoring. Indices derived from standard samples of macroinvertebrates are frequently used for the appraisal of the ecological quality of rivers. However, information on the errors or chance variation that can influence the value of an index is also important. 2. This paper describes a study to quantify the observed sampling variation in three ecological indices based on the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) score system across a wide range of river types and qualities. The indices are number of BMWP taxa, BMWP score and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). 3. The study sites were selected to encompass the four major groups within the River InVertebrate Prediction And Classification System (RIVPACS) site classification for Britain. Within each group, four sites which differed in ecological quality grade were chosen (total of 16 sites). At each site three standard RIVPACS samples were taken in each of spring, summer and autumn by trained staff. In each season, two samples were taken by one biologist and the third by a different individual to allow for within and between‐operator variation. 4. The effects of sampling variation within a season on the number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT across all sites, irrespective of operator, could be represented by some simple parameters. We found that the sampling SD of the square root of the number of taxa, square root of BMWP score and the untransformed ASPT were roughly constant in each case, irrespective of site type or quality. For each index, SD for two and three seasons combined samples were smaller than for single season samples. 5. Inter‐operator influences on sample values were negligible (4–12% of total sampling SD) in this study. This underlines the importance of adequate training for all staff involved in extensive monitoring programmes which use standard procedures from one year to the next, but may involve different staff. 6. Indices for number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT were all estimated with greater precision from combined season samples than from the averages of two or three seasons' samples. 7. This study enables us to estimate confidence intervals for the values of the number of taxa, BMWP score and ASPT based on single season, two or three season combined samples collected using standard RIVPACS procedures for any river site in Britain. The results can also be used in simulation models which incorporate the effects of sampling variation into assessments of the ecological quality of river sites based on the ratio of observed to RIVPACS expected values of these BMWP indices.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of a pilot study on the macroinvertebrate communities occurring in a fast-flowing river in Northern Spain. The objective was to devise a sampling strategy for use on a series of Basque rivers included in a site classification study. Two contrasted sites were chosen for the pilot-study on the River Lea (Bizkaia), at the headwaters and near the mouth. Taxon richness and distribution across the river was examined using two sampling techniques at each site. It was concluded that, ideally, timed sampling units should be collected at intervals across a river transect in order to acquire a representative list of taxa. In addition, adequate sampling in marginal areas was stressed because a number of taxa appeared to be exclusive to marginal areas. Sampling location and total sampling effort were also shown to be a major consideration when taxon lists were acquired for the application of routine biological surveillance techniques.  相似文献

To evaluate a possible introduction of a new dredge in the fishery of Callista chione (Linnaeus, 1758), IPIMAR has conducted a study with the objective of comparing the efficiency of two dredges (traditional dredge and the new dredge design) and evaluating their impact on the benthic community. The experiments were carried out during March 1999 on the Southwest coast of Portugal, from a site off Troia. Three different tow durations of 5, 10 and 20 min were investigated. A total of 24 hauls were accomplished, 4 for each tow duration and dredge. The experiments were conducted by attaching a cover bag with a 20 mm mesh to the gear. After each haul, the catches in the bag and in the cover were sorted separately. All individuals retained were attributed scores on a scale of 1–4 in which 1 equates to good and 4 equates to dead. The results obtained showed that catches from the traditional dredge (TD) are composed of a great fraction of juveniles of C. chione, while in the new dredge (NDD) catches are composed, almost entirely, by individuals with a superior size to the minimum legal length (50 mm). This result indicates that the mesh of the bag of the TD used in the exploitation of this resource is not adequate. For the 3 different tow durations, the mean fishing yield obtained for the NDD was always superior to the TD, due to its greater efficiency in capture. The proportion of by-catch is significantly higher when the TD is used. For all 3 tow duration, the TD caused mortalities on the target species and on the macrobenthic community in the same order of magnitude as the NDD. Since the fishery of C. chione is managed by daily quotas per boat, when using the NDD the impact on the macrobenthic community is reduced by about 50% due to its greater efficiency of capture. Another advantage in the usage of the NDD relatively to the TD, is to allow the smallest individuals (independently of the species) to escape rapidly through the metallic bars on the grid, increasing their probability of survival.  相似文献

1. Detection of impairment in macroinvertebrate communities using rapid biological assessment depends on the ability to compare sites, with confidence that differences obtained result from water quality. However, collections from more than one habitat type may introduce variation that can potentially mask water quality differences among sites. Data were collected from the riffle, edge, pool-rock and macrophyte habitats at reference (minimally disturbed) and test (disturbed) stream sites throughout the Australian Capital Territory. The effect of habitat-specific sampling on predictive models for detecting impairment in macroinvertebrate communities was determined. Four models were used: riffle only, edge only, each habitat as an individual object, and all habitats sampled at a site considered as a composite sample. 2. Macroinvertebrates from individual habitats generally clustered into separate groups because collections from the same habitat at different sites were more similar than collections from different habitats within a site. Thus, in the habitats as individual objects model, the taxa predicted to occur at a test site may be an indication of habitat type rather than water quality. The outputs of the composite habitats and riffle and edge models were similar. However, the variable number of habitats included at each site in the composite model may confound the detection of biological impairment because of unequal sampling effort. The riffle and edge models were the most robust because they were less confounded by inter-habitat variation and were based on comparisons made between equivalent environmental units. 3. Comparison of observed/expected taxa ratios for test sites showed that each model could detect biological impairment, indicating considerable data redundancy was introduced by sampling several habitats. In particular, the pool-rock and macrophyte habitats contributed no information with regard to macroinvertebrate taxon occurrence or detection of biological impairment that could not be obtained from either the riffle or edge habitats within the study area.  相似文献

The efficiency of a cantilevered bridle net was tested in comparisonwith a Wisconsin net and a pumping system to sample zooplanktonorganisms in three water layers (epi-, meta- and hypolimnion)of three Canadian Shield lakes. Variations among samplers werecompared to variations due to within-lake vertical distributionof zooplankters and among lake variations. For each lake andwater layer, we also assessed the efficiency of the three methodsaccording to the catches of zooplanktonic taxa. The highestpercentages of variation were generally due to lake or water-layereffects; interaction between sampling gears and water layerswas above 50% for most taxa, except cladoceran. Sampling methodsexplained more variation than the lake effect for some zooplanktontaxa, indicating that using different sampling devices couldpotentially alter the among-lake variation interpretation ofzooplankton abundance. The pumping system captured higher densitiesof animals per taxa than the cantilever and the Wisconsin nets. The cantilever net generally captured mobile taxa more efficiently(Polyarthra vulgaris, copepods, Daphnia sp., Diaphanosoma brachyurumand chaoborids) than the Wisconsin net and the pumping system, but its efficiency varied among water layers.  相似文献

Sampling variability and colonization rate of introduced substrates (plastic trays filled with pebble and cobble) in two southwestern Virginia streams are described. Substrates were rapidly colonized by aquatic macroinvertebrates, but colonization rates differed between years, possibly due to annual variability in macroinvertebrate abundance. To examine the applicability of using these substrates for biomonitoring benthic communities, trays were placed at several locations in a river receiving power plant discharges. Only six samples were necessary to detect a 15%reduction in macroinvertebrate density and a 12% reduction in number of taxa at effluent sites. Benthic communities established on rock-filled trays and multiplate samplers collected from the same stations during the same period were compared. Although multiplate samplers were more variable than rock trays and were selective for different taxa, both substrate types showed significant differences in community parameters among locations. Rock trays at all sites were dominated by Cheumatopsyche sp., whereas chironomids were more abundant on multiplate samplers. The relative abundance of mayflies was reduced at the effluent site on both substrate types.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Factors affecting invertebrate colonization of samplers consisting of twenty-five 5-cm diameter porcelain balls were studied in small northern California streams. Peaks in diversity, in number of individuals and in taxa, occurred after 2—4 weeks in each of four 10-week colonization runs. Most variation in number of organisms was correlated with increases in organic detritus. Time was the second most important variable.
The average coefficient of variation in total numbers collected from the artificial sampler was 0.40, slightly less than the average 0.56 for the Surber sampler. Published coefficients of variation for artificial substrates range from 0.109 to 0.849, which are similar to values reported from work with the Surber sampler. We had several practical difficulties with the artificial substrates. Samplers were lost, became clogged or buried, supported vertebrate predators and were costly. The samplers also collected some organisms in greater proportion than their occurrences in the natural substrate. In sampling small streams these disadvantages (compared to a Surber sampler) outweigh the slight reduction in sampling variability.  相似文献

Downstream movements of young-of-the-year fish in Catamaran Brook and the Little Southwest Miramichi River, New Brunswick, Canada were monitored by drift sampling during June and July of 1994, 1995 and 1996. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar , white sucker Catostomus commersoni , Cyprinidae, and sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus , were the most commonly captured taxa. All taxa moved downstream almost exclusively at night. Movement was greatest near midnight then declined towards dawn. Drift abundances peaked in mid-June for Atlantic salmon, late June for white sucker, and early July for Cyprinidae. Dates of peak movement were earlier in the Little Southwest Miramichi River than in Catamaran Brook for all taxa. Salmon fry captured in drift samplers were shorter than salmon fry captured by electrofishing near the sampling sites. Salmon fry captured in Catamaran Brook drift samplers were heavier at length than those captured in Little Southwest Miramichi River drift samplers. Results suggest that Catamaran Brook provides relatively better habitat for Atlantic salmon fry growth and relatively poorer habitat for larval white sucker growth than the Little Southwest Miramichi River.  相似文献

This study examined the impact of physical disturbance from long-established road culverts on stream macroinvertebrate communities. Three streams within a 6 km section of highway on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland, Canada, were sampled. Streams had the entire upstream watershed and at least 100 m downstream of the road with natural boreal forest/barren vegetation and all had, within the sampled reaches, similar physical streambed characteristics. The fauna on stones from riffles was sampled at two upstream and three downstream sites, i.e., from 50 m above to about 100 m below the road in each stream. A total of 33 taxa were identified among the streams, with differences limited to a few rare taxa. The sample site communities did not significantly differ from each other with respect to the taxa present. Total macroinvertebrate abundance by site, for combined data of all streams, indicated the site at the exit of culvert plunge pool (site 3) had significantly elevated abundances. Analysis of individual taxa showed this was primarily due to very high numbers of Simulium spp. The other most notable changes were a decrease in numbers of Hydropsyche spp. and Elmidae below the road. The abundances of the remaining taxa were more variable among all sites. The study indicated that long-standing point source physical disturbance primarily impacted taxa abundance rather than community present/absent data, which will recolonize the disturbed zone by downstream drift. The differences in abundance are probably the result of the cleaning of substrate by abrasion, movement of substrate and reduction of detritus during each spate. Handling editor: D. Dudgeon  相似文献

Fruit-bodies of hypogeous fungi were sampled over two seasons across 136 forested study sites representing a stratified sample of the climatic, geological and topographic features of far south-eastern mainland Australia. Two hundred and nine species, over three-quarters being undescribed, were recorded. Statistical models based on various environmental attributes measured for each site were developed for the occurrence of several common taxa. At a landscape scale, climatic factors such as mean minimum temperature of the coldest month and annual mean moisture index were important explanatory variables for most taxa examined, but the type of response varied. More locally, topographic position, soil fertility, time since last fire and micro-habitat structures such as the leaf litter layer and number of large fallen trees also influenced the distribution of taxa in different ways. A model was then developed for the number of fungal species occurring at each site. Important explanatory variables were type of substrate, topography and diversity of potential host eucalypt species. The utility of each model constructed needs evaluation by further sampling of hypogeous fungi. Possible implications of our findings for forest management are discussed. Further analyses of our existing data are also identified.  相似文献

Artificial substrates were compared with a Ponar grab for sampling benthic macroinvertebrates in Lake Anna, Louisa Co., Virginia. The objective was t0 find which technique was best for assessment 0f thermal effluent effects using the following criteria: 1) provide reliable data on density and composition 0f the macrobenthos with a reasonable number 0f replicates; 2) collect the most taxa; and, 3) require the least amount 0f time. Leaves, 3M Corporation's #200 conservation web, and limestone rocks were compared. Each material was tested separately in chicken wire baskets placed 0n the bottom at several depths. Three replicates of each type were retrieved monthly from each depth using SCUBA and cloth flour sacks and compared with grab samples taken from the same depths. Lesser amounts of these materials were tested separately in smaller plastic containers. All large artificial substrate samplers collected significantly more individuals (P = 0.05) and taxa than the Ponar grab. Small web and leaf samplers best met all three 0f the established criteria. The SCUBA system developed in the study is a fast and reliable sampling method.  相似文献
