 As a contribution towards identification of the principal environmental factors involved in cadmium accumulation in Antarctic marine organisms and the establishment of a baseline near the Italian Antarctic Station “Baia Terra Nova”, surface sediments, plankton and benthic organisms were studied in coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea). The cadmium content of sediments was similar to that regarded as background in most marine coastal areas, whereas in surface water, phyto- and zooplankton it was similar to values measured in areas of enhanced upwelling. Algal and animal taxa dominating benthic associations had a higher cadmium content than related species from other seas. Very high concentrations of the metal were found in sponges (10–80 μg/g dw) and in the digestive gland of molluscs (up to 345 μg/g in Neobuccinum eatoni). The rapid regeneration of cadmium and its natural occurrence and bioavailability in highly productive coastal waters seem to be responsible for cadmium accumulation in the tissues of marine organisms near the “Baia Terra Nova” station. Data on heavy metal contents in polychaetes and free-living nematodes inhabiting the bottom sediments of Zolotoi Rog Bay near the port of Vladivostok are reported. Chronically high contents of heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, and Cd) were found in the bottom sediments and in the infauna. The levels of some toxic elements in tissues of the polychaete Dorvillea (Schistomeringos) japonica inhabiting polluted sediments of Zolotoi Rog Bay were higher than in worms of this species from relatively clean areas of the Sea of Japan. Similar high concentrations of Fe were found in the polychaete Capitella capitata and the nematode Oncholaimium ramosum. The highest concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, and Cd were found in tissues of the free-living nematode O. ramosum. The lateral variation of sediment properties and associated cyst content of sediment in Manila Bay were determined and their possible role/s in the occurrences of Pyrodinium bahamense Plate var. compressum (Bohm) Steidinger, Tester et Taylor toxic blooms were assessed. Manila Bay's surface sediment was determined to be silt dominated. Clay generally increased towards the coast, probably as a result of flocculation and rapid deposition upon entry of sediments from the rivers. High sand content characterized the southeastern part of the bay attributed to the greater sand inputs and relatively strong currents in this area. Bulk densities were lower in the eastern side of the bay from dilution by high organic load from sewage and urban areas. Benthic flux calculations, particularly NH3, suggest more than 50% nutrient contribution comes from sediments. In general, dinoflagellate cyst density increased from the center of the bay towards the coast, except in Pampanga Bay where it deceased near the coasts. A maximum of 23 dinoflagellate species were identified: 5 were autotrophic (Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge, Gonyaulax spp., Pyrophacus steinii (Schiller) Wall et Dale, Protoceratium reticulatum (Claparede et Lachmann) Butschli, and Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum), and the rest were predominantly composed of Protoperidinium spp. and Diplopsalis spp. Heterotrophs comprised about 70% of the total cyst counts. Pyrodinium counts increased towards the northwestern part of the bay where it was the dominant autotroph species. Negative correlations were observed for live Pyrodinium cyst density and N flux, P flux, ratio of N to P and total organic carbon (TOC) content. However, areas with high N:P ratio contain abundant Pyrodinium live cysts.  相似文献

Micro-spatial patterns of five infaunal polychaete species were investigated on tidal flats in the Wadden Sea (island of Sylt, North Sea). Sediment samples were taken within plots of 4 m2 at regular distances or with a multiple-cell corer composed of 144 contiguous units. Most of the configurations observed can be related to the mode of feeding. Individuals of the predatory polychaeteEteone longa do not generate discernible spatial structures.Anaitides mucosa, a carnivoruous scavanger, occurs in marked patches. Juveniles ofScoloplos armiger, a burrowing deposit feeder, live in small aggregates which in turn conglomerate to larger ones. Adults are scattered within larger clusters. High density areas of juveniles and adults do overlap. Another burrowing deposit feeder,Capitella capitata, is even more aggregated. Local attractors may cause clusters of exceptional intensity. Territoriality is exhibited by the tube-dwelling surface deposit feedingNereis diversicolor. Crabs are among the most conspicuous and ecologically important invertebrates of the large intertidal zones that characterize estuarine and protected coastal areas in temperate regions. The habitat, population structure and breeding cycle of Chasmagnathus granulatus (Brachyura: Varunidae), a semiterrestrial burrowing crab endemic to the warm temperate coasts of the Southwestern Atlantic, were studied in San Antonio Bay (Argentina), near the southern limit of its range. San Antonio Bay has no freshwater input, winter is relatively colder, and summer warmer, than northern habitats of this species. Crabs lived both in vegetated and unvegetated zones, but density and sex ratio varied among dates and zones. The maximum observed density was 136 crabs/m2 , the maximum carapace width (CW) was 32 mm (males) and 29.8 mm (females), ovigerous females were found only in November and January, and the smallest ovigerous female measured 17 mm CW. The population structure, spatial distribution, and recruitment pattern of C. granulatusdid not differ between San Antonio Bay and northern habitats. The higher density, smaller maximum size and shorter reproductive cycle observed in San Antonio cannot be atributed to changes associated with a latitudinal cline and other factors, such as thermal amplitude and food availability, need to be studied.  相似文献

The qualitative and quantitative composition of free-living marine nematodes have been studied in Vostok Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). It is found that the population density of nematodes in the bottom sediments of Vostok Bay shows an uneven distribution. The mean population density equaled 56800 ± 23400 specimens/m2. A correlation has been revealed between the population density of nematodes and the substrate type. Altogether, 85 species of nematodes have been found; they were dominated by Sabatieria palmaris, Rhabdodemania orientalis, Araeolaimus parvibulbosus, Oncholaimium paraolium, Doryolaimopsis peculiaris, and Metachromadora itoi. Six taxocenoses of nematodes were distinguished, taking into account the species dominating in the population density and using cluster analysis of the obtained data. The dominating trophic assemblage of nematodes was “scrapers.” In general, the species composition of nematodes in Vostok Bay is characterized by the relatively great similarity with that in other areas of Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan).  相似文献

Grain size and grain-size related stresses impart a significant influence on the ichnological character of marginal-marine deposits. This is evident on the New Brunswick coastline of the Bay of Fundy, Canada, where three coarse-grained marginal-marine deposits are studied to assess grain-size controls on the occurrence and type of bioturbation. Firm mud and sand substrates exhibit the greatest diversity and density of bioturbation (i.e., bioturbation intensity). The types of organisms colonizing sands and firm-mud substrates are variable; however, the resultant trace assemblages are similar. Thixotropic muds exhibit significantly reduced trace diversity and density relative to firm mud, reflecting the additional stress placed on the organisms by the relatively soupy consistency of the sediment. A significant change in the trace assemblage occurs when sediment caliber passes the gradational sand—fine gravel boundary.Four main conclusions can be drawn from this study. First, for mixed sand and gravel, fine gravel, and coarse-gravel deposits, the degree of bioturbation (diversity ? density) decreases more rapidly onshore (across the intertidal zone) than is noted in sand or mud deposits. Second, there is a decrease in the degree of bioturbation with increasing grain size for substrates composed of sand-sized and larger clasts. Third, burrows in gravels tend to be lined and/or robust, likely to maintain a stable environment within the burrow. Fourth, in coarse-gravel substrates or substrates with a significant component of coarse gravel, burrows are developed between the clasts and tend to be more permanent structures (than those developed in sand or mud), which are generally continuously occupied.The degree of burrowing noted in these modern gravel deposits contrasts with the relative paucity of biogenic structures reported in conglomerates preserved in the rock record. Based on the intensity of burrowing observed in the gravels, we hypothesize that ancient marginal-marine conglomerates are likely bioturbated, but that these burrows are likely distorted during burial and compaction.  相似文献

Summary Primary productivity in Lancaster Sound was estimated from chlorophyll and light irradiance profiles and light saturation measurments. Mesozooplankton concentrations were measured using an in situ zooplankton counter mounted on a Batfish and with the BIONESS. Microzooplankton concentrations were estimated from samples taken with the BIONESS. The horizontal and vertical distribution of the two groups of zooplankton are described and related to the distribution of chlorophyll primary production and physical features of the Sound. A westward intrusion of Baffin Bay water along the north shore of the sound which mixed with Arctic water flowing easterly resulted in a complex physical environment in the sound. The admixing of these water masses resulted in a highly variable biological structure. The thermocline was the main physical feature that affected the depth of the chlorophyll layer and the levels of primary production, with a shallow thermocline resulting in higher primary production. The admixing of Baffin Bay water with Arctic water at different areas of the sound combined with the different times of appearance of open water resulted in the populations of Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis showing different age structures, the youngest being in the Arctic water at the western end of the Sound. Microzooplankton populations were concentrated at various depths depending on the species. Oithona juveniles preferred the upper 10 m when the thermocline was near the surface. Most macrozooplankton were found below the thermocline and the primary production maxium. The largest concentrations of microzooplankton were found at the western end of the Sound in the Arctic water believed to be still in the biological spring.  相似文献

To evaluate the contribution of the long-range transport of heavy metals from the Asian continent to the enrichment of surface sediments in western Japan, heavy-metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn) concentrations were measured in sediment cores collected at three sites each in Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi. Sedimentation fluxes of these metals were calculated on the basis of their concentrations in excess of their background concentrations. Pb showed similar sedimentation fluxes in the sites, suggesting a predominant contribution of atmospheric deposition of Pb transported from the Asian continent to the input to the lakes. In contrast, the sedimentation fluxes of heavy metals other than Pb in the surface sediments were markedly high near the estuary of a principal river flowing into Lake Nakaumi. A highly positive correlation was observed between the Cd and Zn concentrations in the cores at each site (r 2 = 0.84–0.97). The Cd/Zn ratios in the surface sediments (1990–2007) indicated that Lake Shinji sediments have ratios of 0.0067–0.0074, higher than those of Tokyo Bay sediments (0.0054 on average in 1990–2003), which have been polluted primarily by effluent discharges. In contrast, the ratios in Lake Nakaumi sediments (0.0053–0.0060) were close to those in Tokyo Bay sediments. Rainwater and aerosols, which were strongly affected by air pollutants from the Asian continent, have much higher Cd/Zn ratios of 0.014–0.016. This suggests that the Lake Shinji sediments with higher Cd/Zn ratios are less affected by effluent discharges. Hence, Lake Shinji sediments may be suitable for assessing the environmental impact of the long-range transport of heavy metals from the Asian continent.  相似文献

The qualitative composition and distribution of the meiobenthos in Wrangel Bay (Nakhodka Bay of the Sea of Japan) depend on the bottom sediment grain composition and on the concentration of heavy metals in the ground. It was established that the meiobenthos in the bay was represented by 13 groups of animals (class, order) and was relatively evenly distributed. The nematodes dominated (50–80%), and their settlement density was slightly higher in silty ground than in silty–sandy ground. Forty-eight species of nematodes were found; Dorylaimopsis peculiaris, Viscosia stenostoma, Axonolaimus seticaudatus, Metasphaerolaimus japonicus, and Pseudosteineria inaequispiclata dominated in the silty–sandy sediments; Sabatieria pulchra, S. palmaris, Metalaimus pumilus, Sphaerolaimus limosus, and Oncholaimium ramosum dominated in the silty ground. A slightly expressed correlation of the settlement density with the ground type and lead concentration in the bottom sediments emerged for two species (S. pulchra and S. palmaris).  相似文献

A multilayer sediment-water exchange model was used to evaluate the importance of bioturbation in the profundal sediments of L. Esrom. The temporal variation of the vertical distribution of sedimentary phosphorus fractions was modelled with an objective function of 1.50. Deviations between measured and simulated values occurred in the spring, where the measured pool of sedimentary phosphorus sharply declined in the surface sediments. The application of a model for the activity ofChironomus anthracinus based on biomass, oxygen consumption and temperature improved the model in the spring period. The downwards transport of easy-degradable surface sediments reduced the average release of sedimentary phosphorus from 12 mg P · m−2 · day−1 to 11 mg P · M−2 · day−1. The introduction of a similar model for the other important burrowing species in L. Esrom,Potamothrix hammoniensis, lowered the objective function to 1.37 and increased the average release to 12.5 mg P · m−2 · day−1. The minor role of bioturbation in sediment processes is discussed.  相似文献

Changes in grazing management are believed to be responsible for declines in populations of birds breeding in grassland over the last decades. The relationships between grazing management regimes, vegetation structure and composition and the availability of invertebrate food resources to passerine birds remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the foraging site selection of meadow pipits (Anthus pratensis L.) breeding in high intensity sheep-grazed plots or low intensity mixed (i.e. sheep and cattle)-grazed plots. We sampled above-ground invertebrates, measured vegetation height and density and conducted a vegetation survey in areas where meadow pipits were observed to forage and areas that were randomly selected. Birds foraged in areas with a lower vegetation height and density and in areas containing a lower proportion of the dominant, tussock-forming grass species Molinia caerulea. They did not forage in areas with a total higher invertebrate biomass but at areas with preferred vegetation characteristics invertebrate biomass tended to be higher in foraging sites than random sites. The foraging distance of meadow pipits was higher in the intensively grazed plots. Our findings support the hypothesis that resource-independent factors such as food accessibility and forager mobility may determine patch selection and are of more importance as selection criteria than food abundance per se. Food accessibility seems to become an even more important selection criterion under high grazing intensity, where prey abundance and size decrease. In our upland grazing system, a low intensity, mixed grazing regime seems to provide a more suitable combination of sward height, plant diversity, structural heterogeneity and food supply for meadow pipit foraging activity compared to a more intensive grazing regime dominated by sheep.  相似文献

In an experimental study we assessed if benthic bioturbating invertebrates affect the recruitment (hatching) of zooplankton from the sediment, and if this effect persists as differences in the zooplankton community in the water column, that is, if bioturbation quantitatively stimulates benthic–pelagic coupling. We investigated the effects of four different benthic invertebrates (Asellus aquaticus, Chironomus plumosus, Tubifex tubifex in the presence or absence of the predator Sialis lutaria). In total, 45 zooplankton taxa hatched from the sediment and the hatching success of some of these was dependent on the species identity of the bioturbating invertebrate. The predator Sialis reduced the abundance of all three invertebrate species, but tended to positively influence the zooplankton recruitment rates, possibly through increasing the activity of the bioturbating invertebrates. The most striking effect of bioturbation on the hatching and pelagic zooplankton community properties was that, on average, 11% more species hatched in the Asellus treatment than in any other treatment. This was also mirrored in the zooplankton water column community where, on average, 7% more species established a viable population in treatments with Asellus as bioturbator. In a complementary field survey, Asellus was more common in littoral than in profundal sediments. Because Asellus strongly affected recruitment of zooplankton in our experiment, we argue that bioturbation may partly explain why recruitment of resting stages of both phyto- and zooplankton is generally higher in littoral than in profundal areas.  相似文献

Common species of intertidal agglutinated benthic foraminifera in salt marshes in Massachusetts and Connecticut live predominantly at the marsh surface and in the topmost sediment (0–2.5 cm), but a considerable part of the fauna lives at depths of 2.5–15 cm. Few specimens are alive at depths of 15–25 cm, with rare individuals alive between 25–50 cm in the sediments. Specimens living between the sediment surface and 25 cm deep occur in all marsh settings, whereas specimens living deeper than 25 cm are restricted to cores from the lower and middle marsh, and have an irregular distribution-with-depth. Lower and middle marsh areas are bioturbated by metazoa, suggesting that living specimens reach these depths at least in part by bioturbation. High-marsh sediments in New England consist of very dense mats of Spartina patents or Distichlis spicata roots and are not bioturbated by metazoa. In this marsh region bioturbation by plant roots and vertical fluid motion may play a role in moving the foraminifera into the sediment. The depth-distribution of living specimens varies with species: living specimens of Trochammina inflata consistently occur at the deepest levels. This suggests that species have differential rates of survival in the sediment, possibly because of differential adaptation to severe dysoxia to anoxia, or because of differing food preferences. There is no simple correlation between depth-in-core and faunal diversity, absolute abundance, and species composition of the assemblages. It is therefore possible to derive a signal of faunal changes and thus the environmental changes that may have caused them from the complex faunal signal of fossil assemblages.  相似文献

Distribution patterns of Gomphus pulchellus larvae in different sediments with different density of prey organisms were studied in the field in a small gravel pit lake in the south of Germany. Larval burrowing behaviour at different temperatures as well as food preference, consumption rates and activity were studied in laboratory experiments. In the study lake G. pulchellus larvae lived exclusively in places where macrophytes were present and in fine sediments (mean grain size <3 mm) with detritus cover. There was a significant positive correlation between larval density and density of food organisms suggesting that abundance of food is one of the determinants of larval distribution. In late autumn larvae migrated to deeper places probably to survive the winter. Low temperatures simulated in laboratory experiments did not induce larvae to burrow deeper. Larvae were always found in a sediment depth of 0.59–0.74 cm. Experiments with mixed prey showed that G. pulchellus larvae preferred tubificid worms and chironomid larvae over gammarids and ephemerid larvae. However, chironomid larvae which stayed in their tubes had a higher survival rate than those outside of tubes. Single-prey experiments showed that G. pulchellus larvae can prey not only on benthic species but also on Daphnia from the open water. Functional-response experiments showed that one G. pulchellus larva consumes a maximum of 2 to 3 tubificid worms or chironomid larvae per day, which corresponds to a maximum biomass (freshweight) of 5 to 30 mg per day. Video recordings of activity showed that G. pulchellus larvae cover long distances of up to 52 m per night on the substrate surface and that activity on the substrate surface started after midnight and ceased before sunrise. Consumption of Zooplankton prey and high activity above the substrate is interpreted as an adaptation of G. pulchellus larvae to the life in still water habitats.  相似文献

We studied the diet of larval and juvenile Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus in the upper Ariake Bay, Japan. Diet was analyzed by examining the digestive tracts; feeding intensity, proportion of empty guts, and prey selectivity were calculated. Anchovy density was negatively influenced by temperature and positively by salinity and prey density. Diet was dominated by Acartia omorii, which was positively selected with two other copepods, Calanus sinicus and Pseudodiaptomus marinus. In contrast, Oithona davisae was highly dominant in the environment but was absent in anchovy guts; thus, this copepod was negatively selected, with two others, Tortanus derjugini and Sinocalanus sinensis. Overall, larger prey were positively selected and smaller ones were negatively selected; value of electivity index correlated negatively with prey size. Larvae [<18 mm of standard length (SL)] showed significantly lower feeding intensities and higher rates of empty guts than juveniles (≥18 mm SL). In juveniles, feeding intensity increased steadily as the fish grew in size, with a corresponding reduction in empty guts. Feeding intensity correlated positively and empty gut correlated negatively with fish size. We suggest that larger prey are important diets for postlarval Japanese anchovy in Ariake Bay.  相似文献

In some lakes, large amounts of the potentially toxic cyanobacterium Microcystis overwinter in the sediment. This overwintering population might inoculate the water column in spring and promote the development of dense surface blooms of Microcystis during summer. In the Dutch Lake Volkerak, we found photochemically active Microcystis colonies in the sediment throughout the year. The most vital colonies originated from shallow sediments within the euphotic zone. We investigated whether recruitment of Microcystis colonies from the sediment to the water column was an active process, through production of gas vesicles or respiration of carbohydrate ballast. We calculated net buoyancy, as an indication of relative density, using the amounts and densities of the major cell constituents (carbohydrates, proteins, and gas vesicles). Carbohydrate content of benthic Microcystis cells was very low throughout the year. Buoyancy changes of benthic Microcystis were mostly a result of changes in gas vesicle volume. Before the summer bloom, net buoyancy and the amount of buoyant colonies in the sediment did not change. Therefore, recruitment of Microcystis from the sediment does not seem to be an active process regulated by internal buoyancy changes. Instead, our observations indicate that attachment of sediment particles to colonies plays an important part in the buoyancy state of benthic colonies. Therefore, we suggest that recruitment of Microcystis is more likely a passive process resulting from resuspension by wind‐induced mixing or bioturbation. Consequently, shallow areas of the lake probably play a more important role in recruitment of benthic Microcystis than deep areas.  相似文献

Soil redox potentials and pore water sulfide concentrations on a mangrove island in the Belizean barrier reef system were significantly correlated with the presence of the aerial roots of mangrove trees. Sulfide concentrations were three to five times lower near the prop roots of Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove) and the pneumatophores of Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) than in adjacent (≤ 1 meter away) unvegetated sediment. Soil redox potentials were also significantly higher near the aerial roots. A comparison of the two species revealed that sulfide concentrations in the rhizosphere of R. mangle were as low as that of A. germinans. However, sulfide concentrations in areas occupied by the black mangrove were variable and a function of pneumatophore density. The occurrence of an oxidized rhizosphere around the roots of both species suggests that the adult trees are equally capable of exploiting reduced sediments as long as their respective pathways for root aeration are functional.  相似文献

We assessed the response of a guild of endemic medium and large-bodied carabid species to the local (fine-grained) habitat heterogeneity induced by man. The study was conducted by means of trapping (without killing and preservative agents) and radio-tracking methods (to collect data on the spatial ecology of the endangered species Carabus olympiae Sella). Habitat differentiation induced by man (a mosaic of beech forests, alpen rose shrubberies and pastures) affected species richness and abundance of the guild, which were significantly higher in forests and/or shrubberies than in pastures. Most species preferred forests and shrubberies, with the only exception of Carabus concolor Fabricius, which preferred open areas. Species distribution was also affected by stone density and cattle grazing intensity. In particular, petrophilous species peaked on the roadside because of the high stone density there (stones amassed during road construction), while species abundances significantly lowered in overgrazed pastures. The compactness of the paths made by C. olympiae individuals (evaluated through a tortuosity index) was significantly higher in beech forests than in alpen rose shrubberies, indicating movements in the latter habitat type were bound by the spatial distribution of shrubs, which imposes a limit on path tortuosity. Our findings suggest that local ground beetle species diversity strongly depends on small-scale anthropogenic variables (namely habitat type, stone density and grazing intensity), and that habitat modifications (namely from forest to shrubbery) may significantly affect species movement patterns. General and local conservation management suggestions are given in conformity with these results.  相似文献

The toxic dinoflagellate, Pfiesteria piscicida, is a common constituent of the phytoplankton community in the Delaware Inland Bays, USA. In this study, molecular methods were used to investigate the distributions of benthic stages (cysts) of P. piscicida in sediment cores from the Delaware Inland Bays. Cores from 35 sites were partitioned into nephloid and anoxic layers and analyzed for P. piscicida by nested amplification of the 18S rDNA gene using P. piscicida-specific primers. The presence of inhibitory substances in the PCR reaction was evaluated by inclusion of an exogenous control DNA in the extraction buffer, thus eliminating samples that may yield false-negative results. Our results indicate a patchy distribution of P. piscicida in sediments of the Delaware Inland Bays, with distinct differences between each of the three bays. Overall, P. piscicida was found more frequently in sediments from Rehoboth Bay compared to Indian River and Little Assawoman Bays. These differences suggest (i) that populations of P. piscicida may be more widely distributed in Rehoboth Bay, (ii) that populations of P. piscicida may have been introduced to Rehoboth Bay at an earlier time, (iii) that past blooms of P. piscicida in Rehoboth Bay estuaries may have seeded the sediments with higher numbers of cysts, and/or (iv) that Rehoboth Bay sediments may be more resistant to clearing due to storm turbulence.  相似文献
