The eco‐friendly and low‐cost Co‐free Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 is investigated as a positive material for Li‐ion batteries. The electrochemical performance of the 3 at% Fe‐doped material exhibits an optimal performance with a capacity and voltage retention of 70 and 95%, respectively, after 200 cycles at 1C. The effect of iron doping on the electrochemical properties of lithium‐rich layered materials is investigated by means of in situ X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique during the first charge–discharge cycle while high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to follow the structural and chemical change of the electrode material upon long‐term cycling. By means of these characterizations it is concluded that iron doping is a suitable approach for replacing cobalt while mitigating the voltage and capacity degradation of lithium‐rich layered materials. Finally, complete lithium‐ion cells employing Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 and graphite show a specific energy of 361 Wh kg?1 at 0.1C rate and very stable performance upon cycling, retaining more than 80% of their initial capacity after 200 cycles at 1C rate. These results highlight the bright prospects of this material to meet the high energy density requirements for electric vehicles.  相似文献

Cobalt‐free layered lithium‐rich nickel manganese oxides, Li[LixNiyMn1?x?y]O2 (LLNMO), are promising positive electrode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries because of their high energy density and low materials cost. However, substantial voltage decay is inevitable upon electrochemical cycling, which makes this class of materials less practical. It has been proposed that undesirable voltage decay is linked to irreversible structural rearrangement involving irreversible oxygen loss and cation migration. Herein, the authors demonstrate that the voltage decay of the electrode is correlated to Mn4+/Mn3+ redox activation and subsequent cation disordering, which can be remarkably suppressed via simple compositional tuning to induce the formation of Ni3+ in the pristine material. By implementing our new strategy, the Mn4+/Mn3+ reduction is subdued by an alternative redox reaction involving the use of pristine Ni3+ as a redox buffer, which has been designed to be widened from Ni3+/Ni4+ to Ni2+/Ni4+, without compensation for the capacity in principle. Negligible change in the voltage profile of modified LLNMO is observed upon extended cycling, and manganese migration into the lithium layer is significantly suppressed. Based on these findings, we propose a general strategy to suppress the voltage decay of Mn‐containing lithium‐rich oxides to achieve long‐lasting high energy density from this class of materials.  相似文献

Recently, anionic‐redox‐based materials have shown promising electrochemical performance as cathode materials for sodium‐ion batteries. However, one of the limiting factors in the development of oxygen‐redox‐based electrodes is their low operating voltage. In this study, the operating voltage of oxygen‐redox‐based electrodes is raised by incorporating nickel into P2‐type Na2/3[Zn0.3Mn0.7]O2 in such a way that the zinc is partially substituted by nickel. As designed, the resulting P2‐type Na2/3[(Ni0.5Zn0.5)0.3Mn0.7]O2 electrode exhibits an average operating voltage of 3.5 V and retains 95% of its initial capacity after 200 cycles in the voltage range of 2.3–4.6 V at 0.1C (26 mA g?1). Operando X‐ray diffraction analysis reveals the reversible phase transition: P2 to OP4 phase on charge and recovery to the P2 phase on discharge. Moreover, ex situ X‐ray absorption near edge structure and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that the capacity is generated by the combination of Ni2+/Ni4+ and O2?/O1? redox pairs, which is supported by first‐principles calculations. It is thought that this kind of high voltage redox species combined with oxygen redox could be an interesting approach to further increase energy density of cathode materials for not only sodium‐based rechargeable batteries, but other alkali‐ion battery systems.  相似文献

Spinel‐layered composites, where a high‐voltage spinel is incorporated in a layered lithium‐rich (Li‐rich) cathode material with a nominal composition x{0.6Li2MnO3 · 0.4[LiCo0.333Mn0.333Ni0.333]O2} · (1 – x) Li[Ni0.5Mn1.5]O4 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1) are synthesized via a hydroxide assisted coprecipitation route to generate high‐energy, high‐power cathode materials for Li‐ion batteries. X‐ray diffraction patterns and the cyclic voltammetry investigations confirm the presence of both the parent components in the composites. The electrochemical investigations performed within a wide potential window show an increased structural stability of the spinel component when incorporated into the composite environment. All the composite materials exhibit initial discharge capacities >200 mAh g–1. The compositions with x = 0.5 and 0.7 show excellent cycling stability among the investigated materials. Moreover, the first cycle Coulombic efficiency achieve a dramatic improvement with the incorporation of the spinel component. More notably, the composite materials with increased spinel component exhibit superior rate capability compared with the parent Li‐rich material especially together with the highest capacity retention for x = 0.5 composition, making this as the optimal high‐energy high‐power material. The mechanisms involved in the symbiotic relationship of the spinel and layered Li‐rich components in the above composites are discussed.  相似文献

Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LRLOs) exhibit specific capacities above 250 mAh g?1, i.e., higher than any of the commercially employed lithium‐ion‐positive electrode materials. Such high capacities result in high specific energies, meeting the tough requirements for electric vehicle applications. However, LRLOs generally suffer from severe capacity and voltage fading, originating from undesired structural transformations during cycling. Herein, the eco‐friendly, cobalt‐free Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 (LRNM), offering a specific energy above 800 Wh kg?1 at 0.1 C, is investigated in combination with a lithium metal anode and a room temperature ionic liquid‐based electrolyte, i.e., lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and N‐butyl‐N‐methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide. As evidenced by electrochemical performance and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry characterization, this electrolyte is capable of suppressing the structural transformation of the positive electrode material, resulting in enhanced cycling stability compared to conventional carbonate‐based electrolytes. Practically, the capacity and voltage fading are significantly limited to only 19% and 3% (i.e., lower than 0.2 mV per cycle), respectively, after 500 cycles. Finally, the beneficial effect of the ionic liquid‐based electrolyte is validated in lithium‐ion cells employing LRNM and Li4Ti5O12. These cells achieve a promising capacity retention of 80% after 500 cycles at 1 C.  相似文献

Li[Ni0.9Co0.1]O2 (NC90), Li[Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05]O2 (NCM90), and Li[Ni0.9Mn0.1]O2 (NM90) cathodes are synthesized for the development of a Co‐free high‐energy‐density cathode. NM90 maintains better cycling stability than the two Co‐containing cathodes, particularly under harsh cycling conditions (a discharge capacity of 236 mAh g?1 with a capacity retention of 88% when cycled at 4.4 V under 30 °C and 93% retention when cycled at 4.3 V under 60 °C after 100 cycles). The reason for the enhanced stability is mainly the ability of NM90 to absorb the strain associated with the abrupt anisotropic lattice contraction/extraction and to suppress the formation of microcracks, in addition to enhanced chemical stability from the increased presence of stable Mn4+. Although the absence of Co deteriorates the rate capability, this can be overcome as the rate capability of the NM90 approaches that of the NCM90 when cycled at 60 °C. The long‐term cycling stability of NM90 is confirmed in a full cell, demonstrating that it is one of the most promising Co‐free cathodes for high‐energy‐density applications. This study not only provides insight into redefining the role of Mn in a Ni‐rich cathode, it also represents a clear breakthrough in achieving a commercially viable Co‐free Ni‐rich layered cathode.  相似文献

One of the major hurdles of Ni‐rich cathode materials Li1+x(NixCozMnz)wO2, y > 0.5 for lithium‐ion batteries is their low cycling stability especially for compositions with Ni ≥ 60%, which suffer from severe capacity fading and impedance increase during cycling at elevated temperatures (e.g., 45 °C). Two promising surface and structural modifications of these materials to alleviate the above drawback are (1) coatings by electrochemically inert inorganic compounds (e.g., ZrO2) or (2) lattice doping by cations like Zr4+, Al3+, Mg2+, etc. This paper demonstrates the enhanced electrochemical behavior of Ni‐rich material LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) coated with a thin ZrO2 layer. The coating is produced by an easy and scalable wet chemical approach followed by annealing the material at ≥700 °C under oxygen that results in Zr doping. It is established that some ZrO2 remains even after annealing at ≥800 °C as a surface layer on NCM811. The main finding of this work is the enhanced cycling stability and lower impedance of the coated/doped NCM811 that can be attributed to a synergetic effect of the ZrO2 coating in combination with a zirconium doping.  相似文献

Li and Mn‐rich layered oxides, xLi2MnO3·(1–x)LiMO2 (M=Ni, Mn, Co), are promising cathode materials for Li‐ion batteries because of their high specific capacity that can exceed 250 mA h g?1. However, these materials suffer from high 1st cycle irreversible capacity, gradual capacity fading, low rate capability, a substantial charge‐discharge voltage hysteresis, and a large average discharge voltage decay during cycling. The latter detrimental phenomenon is ascribed to irreversible structural transformations upon cycling of these cathodes related to potentials ≥4.5 V required for their charging. Transition metal inactivation along with impedance increase and partial layered‐to‐spinel transformation during cycling are possible reasons for the detrimental voltage fade. Doping of Li, Mn‐rich materials by Na, Mg, Al, Fe, Co, Ru, etc. is useful for stabilizing capacity and mitigating the discharge‐voltage decay of xLi2MnO3·(1–x)LiMO2 electrodes. Surface modifications by thin coatings of Al2O3, V2O5, AlF3, AlPO4, etc. or by gas treatment (for instance, by NH3) can also enhance voltage and capacity stability during cycling. This paper describes the recent literature results and ongoing efforts from our groups to improve the performance of Li, Mn‐rich materials. Focus is also on preparation of cobalt‐free cathodes, which are integrated layered‐spinel materials with high reversible capacity and stable performance.  相似文献

Ni‐rich Li[NixCoyMn1?x?y]O2 (x ≥ 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g?1. Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the α‐NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer‐sized Ni‐rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single‐crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge–discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume‐change‐induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g?1 at 3.0–4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g?1 at a current density of 1000 mA g?1). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni‐rich layered oxide cathode materials.  相似文献

Li‐rich layered metal oxides are one type of the most promising cathode materials in lithium‐ion batteries but suffer from severe voltage decay during cycling because of the continuous transition metal (TM) migration into the Li layers. A Li‐rich layered metal oxide Li1.2Ti0.26Ni0.18Co0.18Mn0.18O2 (LTR) is hereby designed, in which some of the Ti4+ cations are intrinsically present in the Li layers. The native Li–Ti cation mixing structure enhances the tolerance for structural distortion and inhibits the migration of the TM ions in the TMO2 slabs during (de)lithiation. Consequently, LTR exhibits a remarkable cycling stability of 97% capacity retention after 182 cycles, and the average discharge potential drops only 90 mV in 100 cycles. In‐depth studies by electron energy loss spectroscopy and aberration‐corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate the Li–Ti mixing structure. The charge compensation mechanism is uncovered with X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and explained with the density function theory calculations. These results show the superiority of introducing transition metal ions into the Li layers in reinforcing the structural stability of the Li‐rich layered metal oxides. These findings shed light on a possible path to the development of Li‐rich materials with better potential retention and a longer lifespan.  相似文献

Although potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) have been considered to be promising alternatives to conventional lithium‐ion batteries due to large abundance and low cost of potassium resources, their development still stays at the infancy stage due to the lack of appropriate cathode and anode materials with reversible potassium insertion/extraction as well as good rate and cycling performance. Herein, a novel dual‐carbon battery based on a potassium‐ion electrolyte (named as K‐DCB), utilizing expanded graphite as cathode material and mesocarbon microbead as anode material is developed. The working mechanism of the K‐DCB is investigated, which is further demonstrated to deliver a high reversible capacity of 61 mA h g‐1 at a current density of 1C over a voltage window of 3.0–5.2 V, as well as good cycling performance with negligible capacity decay after 100 cycles. Moreover, the high working voltage with medium discharge voltage of 4.5 V also enables the K‐DCB to meet the requirement of some high‐voltage devices. With the merits of environmental friendliness, low cost and high energy density, the K‐DCB shows attractive potential for future energy storage application.  相似文献

Layered lithium‐ and manganese‐rich oxides (LMROs), described as xLi2MnO3·(1–x)LiMO2 or Li1+yM1–yO2 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, etc., 0 < x <1, 0 < y ≤ 0.33), have attracted much attention as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries in recent years. They exhibit very promising capacities, up to above 300 mA h g?1, due to transition metal redox reactions and unconventional oxygen anion redox reaction. However, they suffer from structural degradation and severe voltage fade (i.e., decreasing energy storage) upon cycling, which are plaguing their practical application. Thus, this review will aim to describe the pristine structure, high‐capacity mechanisms and structure evolutions of LMROs. Also, recent progress associated with understanding and mitigating the voltage decay of LMROs will be discussed. Several approaches to solve this problem, such as adjusting cycling voltage window and chemical composition, optimizing synthesis strategy, controlling morphology, doping, surface modification, constructing core‐shell and layered‐spinel hetero structures, are described in detail.  相似文献

Li and Mn‐rich layered cathodes, despite their high specific capacity, suffer from capacity fading and discharge voltage decay upon cycling. Both specific capacity and discharge voltage of Li and Mn‐rich cathodes are stabilized upon cycling by optimized Al doping. Doping Li and Mn‐rich cathode materials Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.56Co0.08O2 by Al on the account of manganese (as reflected by their stoichiometry) results in a decrease in their specific capacity but increases pronouncedly their stability upon cycling. Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.51Al0.05Co0.08O2 exhibits 96% capacity retention as compared to 68% capacity retention for Li1.2Ni0.16Mn0.56Co0.08O2 after 100 cycles. This doping also reduces the decrease in the average discharge voltage upon cycling, which is the longstanding fatal drawback of these Li and Mn‐rich cathode materials. The electrochemical impedance study indicates that doping by Al has a surface stabilization effect on these cathode materials. The structural analysis of cycled electrodes by Raman spectroscopy suggests that Al doping also has a bulk stabilizing effect on the layered LiMO2 phase resulting in the better electrochemical performance of Al doped cathode materials as compared to the undoped counterpart. Results from a prolonged systematic work on these cathode materials are presented and the best results that have ever been obtained are reported.  相似文献

High‐performance rechargeable all‐solid‐state lithium metal batteries with high energy density and enhanced safety are attractive for applications like portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. Among the various solid electrolytes, argyrodite Li6PS5Cl with high ionic conductivity and easy processability is of great interest. However, the low interface compatibility between sulfide solid electrolytes and high capacity cathodes like nickel‐rich layered oxides requires many thorny issues to be resolved, such as the space charge layer (SCL) and interfacial reactions. In this work, in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and in situ Raman spectroscopy measurements are performed to monitor the detailed interface evolutions in a LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM)/Li6PS5Cl/Li cell. Combining with ex situ characterizations including scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the evolution of the SCL and the chemical bond vibration at NCM/Li6PS5Cl interface during the early cycles is elaborated. It is found that the Li+ ion migration, which varies with the potential change, is a very significant cause of these interface behaviors. For the long‐term cycling, the SCL, interfacial reactions, lithium dendrites, and chemo‐mechanical failure have an integrated effect on interfaces, further deteriorating the interfacial structure and electrochemical performance. This research provides a new insight on intra and intercycle interfacial evolution of solid‐state batteries.  相似文献

Multiple applications of lithium‐ion batteries in energy storage systems and electric vehicles require highly stable electrode materials for long‐term battery operation. Among the various cathode materials, high‐Ni cathode materials enable a high energy density. However, cathode degradation accompanied by complex chemical and structural changes results in capacity and voltage fading in batteries. Cathode degradation remains poorly understood; the majority of studies have only explored the oxidation states of transition‐metal ions in localized areas and have rarely evaluated chemical degradation in complete particles after prolonged cycling. This study systematically investigates the degradation of a high‐Ni cathode by comparing the chemical, structural, and electrical changes in pristine and 500 times‐cycled cathodes. Electron probe micro‐analysis and X‐ray energy dispersive spectroscopy reveal changes in the Ni:O ratio from 1:2 to 1:1 over a large area inside the secondary particle. Electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis related to structural changes is performed for the entire primary particle area to visualize the oxidation state of transition‐metal ions in two dimensions. The results imply that the observed monotonic capacity fade without unusual changes is due to the continuous formation of the Ni2+ phase from the surface to the bulk through chemical and structural degradation.  相似文献

An increase in the amount of nickel in LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn) layered system is actively pursued in lithium‐ion batteries to achieve higher capacity. Nevertheless, fundamental effects of Ni element in the three‐component layered system are not systematically studied. Therefore, to unravel the role of Ni as a major contributor to the structural and electrochemical properties of Ni‐rich materials, Co‐fixed LiNi0.5+xCo0.2Mn0.3–xO2 (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.2) layered materials are investigated. The results, on the basis of synchrotron‐based characterization techniques, present a decreasing trend of Ni2+ content in Li layer with increasing total Ni contents. Moreover, it is discovered that the chex.‐lattice parameter of layered system is not in close connection with the interslab thickness related to actual Li ion pathway. The interslab thickness increases with increasing Ni concentration even though the chex.‐lattice parameter decreases. Furthermore, the lithium ion pathway is preserved in spite of the fact that the c‐axis is collapsed at highly deintercalated states. Also, a higher Ni content material shows better structural properties such as larger interslab thickness, lower cation disorder, and smoother phase transition, resulting in better electrochemical properties including higher Li diffusivity and lower overpotential when comparing materials with lower Ni content.  相似文献

Poor cycling stability is one of the key scientific issues needing to be solved for Li‐ and Mn‐rich layered oxide cathode. In this paper, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is first used as a novel binder in Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode to enhance its cycling stability. Electrochemical performance is conducted by galvanostatic charge and discharge. Structure and morphology are characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results reveal that the CMC as binder can not only stabilize the electrode structure by preventing the electrode materials to detach from the current collector but also suppress the voltage fading of the Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode due to Na+ ions doping. Most importantly, the dissolution of metal elements from the cathode materials into the electrolyte is also inhibited.  相似文献

Development of electrolytes that simultaneously have high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and lithium dendrite suppression ability is urgently required for high‐energy lithium‐metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, an electrolyte is designed by adding a countersolvent into LiFSI/DMC (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide/dimethyl carbonate) electrolytes, forming countersolvent electrolytes, in which the countersolvent is immiscible with the salt but miscible with the carbonate solvents. The solvation structure and unique properties of the countersolvent electrolyte are investigated by combining electroanalytical technology with a Molecular Dynamics simulation. Introducing the countersolvent alters the coordination shell of Li+ cations and enhances the interaction between Li+ cations and FSI? anions, which leads to the formation of a LiF‐rich solid electrolyte interphase, arising from the preferential reduction of FSI? anions. Notably, the countersolvent electrolyte suppresses Li dendrites and enables stable cycling performance of a Li||NCM622 battery at a high cut‐off voltage of 4.6 V at both 25 and 60 °C. This study provides an avenue to understand and design electrolytes for high‐energy LMBs in the future.  相似文献

A new approach to intentionally induce phase transition of Li‐excess layered cathode materials for high‐performance lithium ion batteries is reported. In high contrast to the limited layered‐to‐spinel phase transformation that occurred during in situ electrochemical cycles, a Li‐excess layered Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 is completely converted to a Li4Mn5O12‐type spinel product via ex situ ion‐exchanges and a post‐annealing process. Such a layered‐to‐spinel phase conversion is examined using in situ X‐ray diffraction and in situ high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that generation of sufficient lithium ion vacancies within the Li‐excess layered oxide plays a critical role for realizing a complete phase transition. The newly formed spinel material exhibits initial discharge capacities of 313.6, 267.2, 204.0, and 126.3 mAh g?1 when cycled at 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5 C (1 C = 250 mA g?1), respectively, and can retain a specific capacity of 197.5 mAh g?1 at 1 C after 100 electrochemical cycles, demonstrating remarkably improved rate capability and cycling stability in comparison with the original Li‐excess layered cathode materials. This work sheds light on fundamental understanding of phase transitions within Li‐excess layered oxides. It also provides a novel route for tailoring electrochemical performance of Li‐excess layered cathode materials for high‐capacity lithium ion batteries.  相似文献

Herein, the successful synthesis of MnPO4‐coated LiNi0.4Co0.2Mn0.4O2 (MP‐NCM) as a lithium battery cathode material is reported. The MnPO4 coating acts as an ideal protective layer, physically preventing the contact between the NCM active material and the electrolyte and, thus, stabilizing the electrode/electrolyte interface and preventing detrimental side reactions. Additionally, the coating enhances the lithium de‐/intercalation kinetics in terms of the apparent lithium‐ion diffusion coefficient. As a result, MP‐NCM‐based electrodes reveal greatly enhanced C‐rate capability and cycling stability—even under exertive conditions like extended operational potential windows, elevated temperature, and higher active material mass loadings. This superior electrochemical behavior of MP‐NCM compared to as‐synthesized NCM is attributed to the superior stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and structural integrity when applying a MnPO4 coating. Employing an ionic liquid as an alternative, intrinsically safer electrolyte system allows for outstanding cycling stabilities in a lithium‐metal battery configuration with a capacity retention of well above 85% after 2000 cycles. Similarly, the implementation in a lithium‐ion cell including a graphite anode provides stable cycling for more than 2000 cycles and an energy and power density of, respectively, 376 Wh kg?1 and 1841 W kg?1 on the active material level.  相似文献
