Variation in crop growth is an important limiting factor for groundnut production in Niger. Populations of Aphelenchoides sp., Ditylenchus sp., Helicotylenchus sp., Hoplolaimus pararobustus, Macroposthonia curvata, Paralongidorus bullatus, Scutellonema clathricaudatum, Telotylenchus indicus and Xiphinema parasetariae have been associated with groundnut crop growth variability. S. clathricaudatum, X. parasetariae and T. indicus were widespread and S. clathricaudatum was most abundant nematode. Population densities of S. clathricaudatum was always higher in the roots of poorly growing, chlorotic and stunted plants than in the roots of apparently healthy plants. A preplant population density of 1.3 S. clathricaudatum cm-3 soil caused (p=0.05) reduction in plant growth of groundnut cv. 55–437. S. clathricaudatum was mainly confined to 0–15 cm soil depth at the time of planting in June and was not found below 45 cm depth at any time during the crop growth period. Soil application of carbofuran (10 kg a.i ha-1) reduced the nematode population densities and resulted in vigorous and uniform crop growth. Higher Al and H-ion concentrations (0.50 meq 100 g-1 soil) also was associated with poorly growing chlorotic seedlings. Symptoms of nematode-caused variable growth were evident 3 to 4 weeks after seedling emergence.Submitted as ICRISAT Journal Article No. 1141.  相似文献

The effects of the herbicide tebuthiuron (0.36, 0.6, and 1.01 kg/ha in pellet form) on nontarget organisms, vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, were observed in sagebrush semidesert in central Utah. Only the highest level of tebuthiuron application showed any significant effects on mycorrhizal fungi compared to the untreated control. The introduced annual Bromus tectorum L. had both a reduced percent mycorrhizal root infection and reduced spore density in its rhizosphere with the highest herbicide level. The herbicide did not significantly affect mycorrhizal root infection of Sitanion hystrix, a short-lived perennial grass, at any level of application. There was no significant effect of any level of tebuthiuron on germination of mycorrhizal spores collected 6 months after herbicide application.Published with the approval of the Director, Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, as Journal Paper No. 3777  相似文献

This laboratory-based study sought to determine the efficacy of using carbofuran in an exclusion experiment aimed at assessing the impacts of biocontrol agents on Lantana camara L. (sensu lato) (Verbenaceae). Two separate experiments were conducted, the first one on insect-free plants, to determine the effects of carbofuran solely on plant growth; and the second one, on Teleonemia scrupulosa Stål (Hemiptera: Tingidae) infested plants, with the objective of determining the impact of carbofuran on this biocontrol agent, as well as its impacts on plant growth. Carbofuran granules (10% a.i.) were applied at 7?g/m2 a.i. to the potting medium. It was found that carbofuran did not have a significant effect on plant growth. Total removal of T. scrupulosa from exclusion plants (carbofuran-treated plants) was not achieved; however the low level of leaf feeding lesions on those plants indicated that carbofuran had considerably reduced the insect’s population density. Results from a bioassay showed 100% and 40% T. scrupulosa mortality on leaves collected from carbofuran-treated and control plants, respectively, within three weeks of exposure. Analysis of chemical residue levels in the leaf material revealed that carbofuran potency only persisted for about three weeks, and was detectable at trace levels (<0.1?mg/kg). It was therefore concluded that carbofuran was effective at reducing the population of T. scrupulosa on its host plant, but only briefly. Carbofuran should be applied at least once every three weeks or at a higher dosage in order to maintain a low insect population for the duration of an experiment or to achieve total exclusion. For better insect removal, one should consider combining carbofuran and foliar insecticides.  相似文献

Rooted cuttings ofRosa multiflora ‘Brooks 56’ were grown in a medium of 1 mineral soil: 1 sand (v/v) or bark: 1 sand (v/v) inoculated with the VA-mycorrhizal (VAM) fungiGlomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe andG. fasciculatum (Thaxt. sensu Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe or left as noninoculated controls. The slow release fertilizer osmocote was applied at rates of either 0, 1.2, or 4.2 kg/m3 (18N-6P-12K) and incorporated into the container medium. After 180 days plants were evaluated for growth, development and chemical leaf analysis. Greatest growth responses occurred after the highest fertilizer application of 4.2 kg/m3, and the poorest one after 0 kg/m3. Combination bark: sand medium was superior to mineral soil: sand medium for growth of mycorrhizal plants. At 0 kg/m3, mycorrhizal plants in bark: sand medium had longer shoots than other treatments. At 1.2 kg/m3, VAM plants compared to nonmycorrhizal plants in park:sand medium had greater effect on growth parameters. At the highest fertilizer application of 4.2 kg/m3, greatest growth responses occurred with VAM plants in bark:sand medium. Mycorrhizal plants compared to nonmycorrhizal plants in bark:sand medium had greater K and Zn uptake at 0 kg/m3, and greater K, Ca, S, Mn and Zn uptake at 1.2 kg/m3. Texas Agr. Expt. Sta. Stimulation of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi may secure the early establishment of symbiosis and benefit the host plant at an earlier stage of development. The application of Bacillus mycoides resulted in particular in the acceleration of early VA mycorrhiza formation. An increase in vigour of the symbiosis could be measured later in terms of increased sporulation of the mycorrhizal fungi after shoot removal. Natural sporulation during later mycorrhizal development was affected by combination of bacteria and just one mycorrhizal isolate. The stimulation of mycorrhizal development was shown to be non-specific with regard to host plant and the isolate of the VAM fungus. However, the effect could not be achieved in all combinations of soil types and host plants. Application of the systemic fungicides triadimefon and pyrazophos promoted VAM formation. Combinations of fungicide and bacterial treatments were not synergistic.  相似文献

Summary Six mycorrhizal fungi were tested as inoculants for pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum Leeke) grown in pots maintained in a greenhouse. VAM fungi varied in their ability to stimulate plant growth and phosphorus uptake. Inoculation withGigaspora margarita, G. calospora andGlomus fasciculatum increased shoot drymatter 1.3 fold over uninoculated control. In another pot trial, inoculation withGigaspora calospora andGlomus fasciculatum resulted in dry matter and phosphorus uptake equivalent to that produced by adding phosphorus at 8 kg/ha.The influence of inoculatingGigaspora calospora on pearl millet at different levels of phosphorus fertilizer (0 to 60 kg P/ha) as triple superphosphate in sterile and unsterile alfisol soil was also studied. In sterile soil, mycorrhizal inoculation increased dry matter and phosphorus uptake at levels less than 20 kg/ha. At higher P levels the mycorrhizal effect was decreased. These studies performed in sterilized soil suggest that inoculation of pearl millet with efficient VAM fungi could be extremely useful in P deficient soils. However, its practical utility depends on screening and isolation of fungal strains which perform efficiently in natural (unsterilized) field conditions.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to examine the effect of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus macrocarpum and salinity on growth of Sesbania aegyptiaca and S. grandiflora. In the salt-stressed soil, mycorrhizal root colonisation and sporulation was significantly higher in AM-inoculated than in uninoculated plants. Mycorrhizal seedlings had significantly higher root and shoot dry biomass production than non-mycorrhizal seedlings grown in saline soil. The content of chlorophyll was greater in the leaves of mycorrhiza-inoculated as compared to uninoculated seedlings. The number of nodules was significantly higher in mycorrhizal than non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal seedling tissue had significantly increased concentrations of P, N and Mg but lower Na concentration than non-mycorrhizal seedlings. Under salinity stress conditions both Sesbania sp. showed a high degree of dependence on mycorrhizae, increasing with the age of the plants. The reduction in Na uptake together with a concomitant increase in P, N and Mg absorption and high chlorophyll content in mycorrhizal plants may be important salt-alleviating mechanisms for plants growing in saline soil.  相似文献

Grapevine N fertilization may affect and be affected by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal colonization and change berry composition. We studied the effects of different N fertilizers on AM fungal grapevine root colonization and sporulation, and on grapevine growth, nutrition, and berry composition, by conducting a 3.5-year pot study supplying grapevine plants with either urea, calcium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, or ammonium nitrate. We measured the percentage of AM fungal root colonization, AM fungal sporulation, grapevine shoot dry weight and number of leaves, nutrient composition (macro- and micronutrients), and grapevine berry soluble solids (total sugars or °Brix) and total acidity. Urea suppressed AM fungal root colonization and sporulation. Mycorrhizal grapevine plants had higher shoot dry weight and number of leaves than non-mycorrhizal and with a higher growth response with calcium nitrate as the N source. For the macronutrients P and K, and for the micronutrient B, leaf concentration was higher in mycorrhizal plants. Non-mycorrhizal plants had higher concentration of microelements Zn, Mn, Fe, and Cu than mycorrhizal. There were no differences in soluble solids (°Brix) in grapevine berries among mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. However, non-mycorrhizal grapevine berries had higher acid content with ammonium nitrate, although they did not have better N nutrition and vegetative growth.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhiza reduces susceptibility of tomato to Alternaria solani   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mycorrhiza frequently leads to the control of root pathogens, but appears to have the opposite effect on leaf pathogens. In this study, we studied mycorrhizal effects on the development of early blight in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) caused by the necrotrophic fungus Alternaria solani. Alternaria-induced necrosis and chlorosis of all leaves were studied in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants over time course and at different soil P levels. Mycorrhizal tomato plants had significantly less A. solani symptoms than non-mycorrhizal plants, but neither plant growth nor phosphate uptake was enhanced by mycorrhizas. An increased P supply had no effect on disease severity in non-mycorrhizal plants, but led to a higher disease severity in mycorrhizal plants. This was parallel to a P-supply-induced reduction in mycorrhiza formation. The protective effect of mycorrhizas towards development of A. solani has some parallels to induced systemic resistance, mediated by rhizobacteria: both biocontrol agents are root-associated organisms and both are effective against necrotrophic pathogens. The possible mechanisms involved are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Studies examined net photosynthesis (Pn) and dry matter production of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizalPinus taeda at 6 intervals over a 10-month period. Pn rates of mycorrhizal plants were consistently greater than nonmycorrhizal plants, and at 10 months were 2.1-fold greater. Partitioning of current photosynthate was examined by pulse-labelling with14CO2 at each of the six time intervals. Mycorrhizal plants assimilated more14CO2, allocated a greater percentage of assimilated14C to the root systems, and lost a greater percentage of14C by root respiration than did nonmycorrhizal plants. At 10 months, the quantity of14CO2 respired by roots per unit root weight was 3.6-fold greater by mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants. Although the stimulation of photosynthesis and translocation of current photosynthate to the root system by mycorrhiza formation was consistent with the source-sink concept of sink demand, foliar N and P concentrations were also greater in mycorrhizal plants.Further studies examined Pn and dry matter production ofPinus contorta in response to various combinations of N fertilization (3, 62, 248 ppm), irradiance and mycorrhizal fungi inoculation. At 16 weeks of age, 6 weeks following inoculation with eitherPisolithus tinctorius orSuillus granulatus, Pn rates and biomass were significantly greater in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal plants had significantly greater foliar %P, but not %N, than did nonmycorrhizal plants. Fertilization with 62 ppm N resulted in greater mycorrhiza formation than either 3 or 248 ppm. Increased irradiance resulted in increased mycorrhiza formation.  相似文献

Summary Rooted cuttings ofSeverinia buxifolia were inoculated with the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungusGlomus intraradices or provided an inoculum filtrate (non-VAM plants) and grown in one of seven media combinations of fired montmorillonite clay (FMC) and Canadian peatmoss (CP) at ratios of 100%, 80%, 67%, 50%, 33%, 20%, or 0% FMC. Mycorrhizal infection increased with higher proportions of FMC, but the growth of both VAM and non-VAM plants was reduced with increased FMC amendment. The growth benefit (top and root fresh-dry weights) conferred by mycorrhizal infection was greater at higher levels of FMC in the media. Improved phosphorus uptake by inoculated severinia plants appeared at least partially responsible for increased growth compared to non-VAM plants under conditions of high soluble salts and pH associated with high FMC composition. The effect of Streptomyces albovinaceus (S-22) and Bacillus sp. (B1) on the growth response, nodulation, nutrition and nitrogenase activities of faba bean (Vicia faba) varieties infected with Glomus mosseae under pot conditions in sterile soil amended with chitin was studied. The growth, nodulation, nutrients content and nitrogenase activity of mycorrhiza-treated plants of Giza-667 were significantly increased compared to untreated ones. Such increases were related to the increase in mycorrhizal root infection. Amendment of soil with chitin alone reduced the growth, nodulation, total nitrogen contents and nitrogenase activities of mycorrhiza-treated faba bean plants (Giza-667) compared to untreated plants. Inoculation of plants with S. albovinaceus or Bacillus sp. significantly increased the level of mycorrhizal roots infection, but addition of chitin to the soil in combination with Bacillus sp. reduced the mycorrhizal infection of faba bean roots. Highest phosphorus contents of faba bean Giza-667 were recorded after G. mosseae inoculation in the presence of all treatments. Similar results were observed for the other varieties. The microbial populations were significantly increased in rhizospheres amended with chitin. Such increases were not in response to the mycorrhizal inoculation. Generally, the microflora of faba bean rhizospheres was increased after treatment with G. mosseae in the absence of chitin amendment alone compared with non-mycorrhizal rhizospheres.  相似文献

The influence of four nitrogen levels (0, 60, 90 and 120 kg N/ha) on growth of maize and development of lepidopterous pests was investigatdd in a field trial. Nitrogen had a positive effect on both plant growth variables (plant height, stem diameter and yield), and development and survival ofSesamia calamistis andEldana saccharina, and thereby increased the incidence of dead hearts and stem tunneling. However, the percent yield loss due to artificial infestation decreased with increasing N application rate from 20% to 11% in the in the 0kg/ha and 120kg/ha treatment, respectively. Using a multiple regression analysis, plant height, plant diameter and stem tunneling were found to be the most important variables explaining the variability in maize yield.  相似文献

Different rates of granular formulations ofaldicarb, carbofuran, ethoprop, fensulfothion, and phenamiphos were applied directly onto garlic seed cloves in the seed furrow in sandy clay loam, clay loam, and loam soils at planting to assess efficacy for control of Ditylenchus dipsaci in infected seed cloves. All treatments were compared to hotwater-formalin clove dip disinfection treatment and to nontreated infected controls. Aldicarb and phenamiphos at 2.52 and 5.04 kg a.i./ ha, but not at lower rates, effectively suppressed infection by D. dipsaci and increased yields. Although both nematicides slightly slowed the rate of plant emergence, normal stands were established. Trace levels of infection occurred in all treatments, including the hotwater-formalin dip. Carbofuran at 5.04 kg a.i./ha controlled the nematode but was phytotoxic. Ethoprop was phytotoxic. Fensulfothion did not control D. dipsaci even at the highest application rate, 8.90 kg a.i./ha. Single and multiple applications of oxamyl at 1.12-8.96 kg a.i./ha, applied as a surface spray or in furrow irrigation water, slowed the early progression of disease symptoms but failed to provide season-long nematode control.  相似文献

Summary The effect of seed inoculation withAzotobacter spp. orAzospirillum spp., and garbage amendment (0.5%), on the growth of wheat was studied in a field experiment under sub-tropical conditions. Two levels of N fertilizer were applied, the usual field rate (150 kg N ha–1) and half this amount. Tillering of plants, dry matter contents and nitrogenase activity were determined 30, 60 and 90 days after sowing. At the end of the experimental period, spore numbers and percentage of mycorrhizal infection were observed in the rhizosphere and root systems of plants. Straw and grain yields were also determined. The results of this study showed that seed inoculation and/or organic amendment stimulated plant growth, nitrogenase activity and mycorrhizal infection. This was more noticeable withAzotobacter than withAzospirillum. Inoculation withAzotobacter together with 1/2 N dose and organic amendment was the most effective application (19.75 and 10.70 t ha–1 were recorded for straw and grain yield, respectively).  相似文献

Effect of carbofuran on the growth, nodulation, phytomass, chlorophyll and carotene ofVigna radiata Roxb., was studied. Out of different concentrations of carbofuranviz., 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 ppm, the concentration of 5 ppm carbofuran revealed no toxic effect, instead the growth, number of nodules, phytomass and chlorophyll were increased in comparison to control. However, 10, 25 and 50 ppm carbofuran proved to be toxic. The plants showed inhibition of growth. While 100 ppm of carbofuran was found to be fatal for the growth of plants.  相似文献

Plant growth enhancing effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are suitably quantified by comparisons of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plant growth responses to added phosphorus (P). The ratio between the amounts of added P required for the same yield of mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants is termed the relative effectiveness of the mycorrhiza. Variation in this relative effectiveness was examined for subterranean clover grown on a high P-fixing soil. Plants were either left non-mycorrhizal or inoculated with one of three AM fungal species with well-characterised differences in external hyphal spread. With no P added, plants from all treatments produced <10% of their maximum growth achieved at non-limiting P supply. The growth response of non-mycorrhizal plants was markedly sigmoid. Mycorrhizal growth responses were not sigmoid but their shape was two-phased. The first phase was an asymptotic approach to 25–30% of maximum growth, followed by a second asymptotic rise to maximum growth. Growth effects of Glomus invermaium and Acaulospora laevis were quite similar. Plants in these treatments produced up to four times greater shoot dry biomass than non-mycorrhizal plants. Scutellospora calospora was less effective. The relative effectiveness of AM fungi varied with the level of P application. This is expected to apply to all soils on which a sigmoid response is obtained for growth of non-mycorrhizal plants. In a simple approximation the relative effectiveness was calculated to range from 1.46 to 15.57. Shoot P contents were increased by up to 25 times by A. laevis, significantly more than by the other two fungi. The further mycelial spread of this fungus is thought to have contributed to its relatively greater effect on plant P content.  相似文献

Chenopods are generally regarded as non-host plants for mycorrhizal fungi and are believed not to benefit from colonization by mycorrhizal fungi. Perennial Atriplex nummularia Lindl., growing under field conditions, showed a relatively high level of colonization by mycorrhizal fungi (10–30% of root length colonized) in spring and summer. Accordingly, two glasshouse experiments were designed to assess the effects of inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi (with a single species or a mixture of different species) on growth, nutrient uptake, and rhizosphere bacterial community composition of A. nummularia at high and low salinity levels (2.2 and 12 dSm–1). Only low and patchy colonization by mycorrhizal fungi (1–2 of root length colonized) was detected in inoculated plants under glasshouse conditions which was unaffected by salinity. Despite the low colonization, inoculation increased plant growth and affected nutrient uptake at both salinity levels. The effects were higher at an early stage of plant development (6weeks) than at a later stage (9–10 weeks). Salinity affected the bacterial community composition in the rhizosphere as examined by ribosomal intergenic spacer amplification (RISA) of 16S rDNA, digitization of the band patterns and multivariate analysis. The effects of inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi on growth of A. nummularia may be attributed to (i) direct effects of mycorrhizal fungi on plant nutrient uptake and/or (ii) indirect effects via mycorrhizal-induced changes in the bacterial community composition.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India during 1982 wet season (June–July) to study the root activity and rooting pattern of IR-20 rice as influenced by urea insecticide combinations by a32P absorption technique. The treatments involved a factorial combination of four levels of N (0, 60, 90 and 120 kg N/ha) as urea and three levels of insecticides (no insecticide, carbofuran @ 0.75 kg a.i./ha and phorate @ 1.0 kg a.i./ha). The root activity measured in terms of the amount of32P absorbed by the plant, increased considerably by the application of urea and insecticides (carbofuran or phorate) as well as due to their interactions. The root activity increased upto 120 kg N ha−1. Carbofuran or phorate application increased root activity and the effect of carbofuran was greater than that of phorate. Nitrogen-insecticide interaction was positive on root activity upto 120 kg N ha−1 and the effect was more marked with carbofuran and N combinations. But the percentage distribution of active roots of rice could not be influenced by levels of N, insecticides or their interactions. About 80 percent of the roots of IR 20 rice forage within 10 cm from the surface. The enhanced root activity due to application of N and insecticides (carbofuran and phorate) increased the uptake of major and micro-nutrients. the phytotonic effects of carbofuran and phorate on rice works by triggering the root activity of the crop.  相似文献

Summary The effects of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM) on the growth and phosphorus uptake of cocoa seedlings (Theobroma cacao L.) grown for 100 days in polythene bags, were studied at five levels of phosphorus fertilization in both steamed and unsterile Bungor Series soil (a fine clayey, kaolinitic isohyperthermic Typic Paleudult). The cocoa seedlings responded well to phosphorus fertilization and mycorrhizal treatments. Plants inoculated with VAM fungi (Gigaspora spp.) gave the most vigorous growth and higher phosphorus in the leaf tissues in unsterile soil compared to plants grown in steamed soil. However, the mycorrhizal effect was significantly more pronounced (P<0.01) in plants grown in steamed than in unsterile soil. High levels of phosphorus application depressed mycorrhizal development. Phosphorus fertilizer applied at the rates of 250 and 500 ug g−1 soil gave maximum root colonization and spore counts in both soil types used.  相似文献
