1. In treehoppers in which courtship has been studied, males initiate the search for females by periodically emitting a vibrational signal. The responses by the female are used by males as a beacon and give rise to a duet. 2. Courtship and mating of the treehopper Ennya maculicornis were characterised through the simultaneous recording of vibrational signals and the behaviour of males and females in an arena. 3. In E. maculicornis, female initiated mate searching. Females produced two types of signals during the this process: (i) a signal that preceded the approach by the male and (ii) a signal that preceded mating. Males emitted two signals associated with two stereotyped body movements: (i) a signal produced as a response to the first signal emitted by the female, involving a change in the male's locomotory mode and the approach to the female, and (ii) a signal produced after finding and holding on to the female, involving simultaneous abdomen raising and wing fluttering. These signals were repeated several times before the female emitted the second signal. The four signalling patterns were observed in all recordings in which mating was observed. When any of the signals was missing, mating did not occur. 4. Female‐biased sex ratios in E. maculicornis, along with iteroparity, are suggested to explain the initiation of mate searching behaviour by females. A comparison of data with that from other treehoppers indicates that vibrational signals and their associated behaviour are more diverse among treehoppers than has been appreciated previously.  相似文献

Producers of Bt cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae), in the southeastern USA face significant losses from highly polyphagous stink bug species. These problems may be exacerbated by crop rotation practices that often result in cotton, peanut, Arachis hypogaea L., and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill (both Fabaceae), growing in close proximity to one another. Because all of these crops are hosts for the major pest stink bug species in the region, we experimentally examined colonization preference of these species among the crops to clarify this aspect of their population dynamics. We planted peanut, soybean, Bt cotton, and glyphosate‐tolerant (RR) non‐Bt cotton at three sites over 3 years in replicated plots ranging from 192 to 1 323 m2 and calculated odds ratios for colonization of each crop for Nezara viridula (L.) and Euschistus servus (Say) (both Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). In four of five experiments, both E. servus and N. viridula preferred soybean significantly more often than Bt cotton, non‐Bt cotton, and peanut. Neither N. viridula nor E. servus showed any preference between non‐Bt and Bt cotton in any experiment. Both species had higher numbers in Bt and non‐Bt cotton relative to peanut; this was not significant for any single experiment, but analyses across all experiments indicated that N. viridula preferred Bt and non‐Bt cotton significantly more often than peanut. Our results suggest that soybean in the landscape may function as a sink for stink bug populations relative to nearby peanut and cotton when the soybean is in the reproductive stage of development. Stink bug preference for soybean may reduce pest pressure in near‐by crops, but population increases in soybean could lead to this crop functioning as a source for later‐season pest pressure in cotton.  相似文献

The female calling song (FCS) of the southern green stink bug Nezara viridula is composed of vibrational pulse trains that include either short pulses and a long pulse (FCS-1) or just short pulses (FCS-2). Their function in communication was studied by investigating male vibratory responses to natural and artificial signals on artificial and natural substrates. On a loudspeaker membrane, FCS-1 triggered in males from a Slovene and a French population significantly more courtship songs (MCrS) than FCS-2. Experiments with artificial signals showed that male responses are modulated by the duration of pulse trains and pulse repetition time. On a bean plant, males of both populations responded in the same way to the two types of female calling song pulse trains. Moreover, a laser vibrometer study of the transmission of different natural and artificial vibratory signals through the bean plant showed that the pulses of a high repetition rate are prolonged and fused at distances from the emitter. We conclude that female calling song pulse trains of different temporal structure have the same function in vibrational communication of the species. The temporal and spectral structures of the female calling songs of N. viridula are discussed in terms of effective transmission through plants.  相似文献

Abstract.  Male stink bugs, Euschistus heros , only produce the three-component sex pheromone blend consisting of methyl-(2 E ,4 Z )-decadienoate, methyl-2,4,6-trimethyldodecanoate and methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate in a constant ratio of 53 : 3 : 44, respectively, when provided with a food source (green beans, Phaseolus vulgaris ). When volatiles are collected from insects with drinking water, humidified air, or under dry conditions, the insects stop producing two components (methyl-2,4,6-trimethyldodecanoate and methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate) after 1 day and increase the amount of defensive compounds produced [e.g. ( E )-2-hexenal, decane]. Methyl-2,4,6-trimethyltridecanoate is able to change the behaviour of females but not males. Dual-choice olfactometer bioassays with synthetic standards of all three components, as well as the ternary mixture in the correct ratio, induce a response from females but not males, indicating that all three components have a role in sexual communication. Thus, the dietary conditions under which volatile collections are carried out are crucial for determination of the precise sex pheromone blend.  相似文献

The predatory spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), is an economically important and highly valued biological control agent. There is substantial information on the biology, ecology, behavior, and rearing of this stink bug. However, virtually nothing is known of its genetic variation, in natural or domesticated populations. To address this lacuna, we used amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) to assess the genetic variability of field and laboratory populations. Four AFLP universal primer combinations yielded a total of 209 usable loci. The AFLP results showed greater genetic variability between populations from Missouri and Mississippi (both USA), and relatively low variability within Missouri populations. We infer little genetic isolation among Missouri field populations and within laboratory populations, but a significant genetic isolation between Missouri and Mississippi populations.  相似文献

In the genus Panorpa (Insecta: Mecoptera), also known as scorpionflies, premating behavior includes repeated sequences of slow wing movements (waving, fanning, flagging) which are accompanied by rapid abdomen vibrations that generate substantial substrate‐borne sound. It is still unknown whether wing patterns or vibratory signals contain information about species identity, sex and/or the quality of potential mating partners. Besides species‐specific pheromones, these multimodal signals may be of particular importance for the maintenance of reproductive isolation in sympatrically occurring scorpionfly species. Here, we analyzed phyologenetic relationships among, and the pattern of forewings as well as substrate‐borne sound in 3 different sympatric Central‐European scorpionfly species (P. communis, P. germanica, and P. alpina). Divergence time estimates, based on 879 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene, indicate longstanding separate evolutionary histories for the studied Panorpa species. Morphological analysis revealed that wing length as an indicator of body size increased in the following order: P. alpina < P. germanica < P. communis. Individuals can be assigned to the correct species and sex with high accuracy just by evaluation of the number of dark spots and the proportion of wing pigmentation. Despite high variability of interpulse period at an individual level, across species analysis revealed a positive correlation of average interpulse period as well as mean signal amplitude with forewing length. These results suggest wing patterns, but less likely vibratory signals, to contain information about species identity. Furthermore, receivers may be able to estimate the body size of a signaler solely on the basis of substrate‐borne sound.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of weed hosts on stink bug density and damage (Euschistus conspersus Uhler and Thyanta pallidovirens Stal), and a nectar bearing plant on natural enemies of stink bugs in the Sacramento Valley of California. Stink bug density and fruit damage were evaluated in processing tomatoes adjacent to weedy and cultivated borders. The density of E. conspersus was significantly greater in tomatoes adjacent to weedy borders in July but not during August/September. Thyanta pallidovirens was less abundant overall (19%), but was found in significantly greater densities adjacent to cultivated borders in July but not in August/September. Mean percent fruit damage by stink bugs was greater adjacent to the weedy border than the cultivated border, but this difference was not significant. Stink bug egg parasitism and generalist predator density were evaluated in fresh market tomatoes adjacent to a sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima L.) border and an unplanted control border at three sites. Egg parasitism was significantly greater in the alyssum treatment for the 9–12 September sampling period. Jalysus wickhami VanDuzee (Hemiptera: Berytidae) density was significantly greater in the alyssum treatment in mid‐June. No other significant differences in predator populations were detected. Results of these two studies show that habitat manipulations have the potential to reduce densities of E. conspersus in tomato, the first step in developing a farmscape management plan for stink bug control.  相似文献

Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a major pest of soybean in South America, feeds on alternative legume hosts, and four species of Indigofera were tested. Nymphal survival was 88% on I. endecaphylla Jacq. (IE), 15% on I. suffruticosa Mill. (IS), 70% on I. hirsuta L. (IH) and 40% on I. truxilliensis H.B.K. (IT). From stadia 2 through 5, fastest development (22 days) occurred on IE and IT, and the slowest (29 days) on IS. Fresh body weight at emergence was higher for nymphs fed on IE and IT. Adult survival of P. guildinii after 40 days, was greater than 70% on IT and IE, and less than 20% on IS. Females oviposited on all Indigofera species, but <30% were observed to lay eggs on IS. Body weight gain during the first week was greater for adults feeding on IE and IH. Insects lost weight on IS; at the end of day 15 no differences in percent change in body weight, among the food plants tested, were observed. Field surveys conducted on IT and IS, the two most abundant species in northern Paraná, indicated a greater number of nymphs, adults, and egg masses on the former host. On both hosts P. guildinii was more abundant during April/May, after soybean harvest, suggesting movement of the populations from soybean to Indigofera.  相似文献

Temperature‐based degree‐day models describe insect seasonality and to predict key phenological events. We expand on the use of a temperature‐based process defining timing of reproduction through the incorporation of female reproductive physiology for the invasive pentatomid species Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug. A five‐stage ranking system based on ovary development was able to distinguish between the reproductive statuses of field‐collected females. Application of this ranking method described aspects of H. halys’ seasonality, overwintering biology, and phenology across geographic locations. Female H. halys were collected in the US from NJ, WV, NC, OR, and two sites in PA in 2006–2008 (Allentown, PA only) and 2012–2014. Results identify that H. halys enters reproductive diapause in temperate locations in the fall and that a delay occurs in developmental maturity after diapause termination in the spring. Modification of the Snyder method to identify biofix determined 12.7‐hr photoperiod as the best fit to define initiation of reproduction in the spring. Applying the biofix, we demonstrated significant differences between locations for the rate at which the overwintering generation transition into reproductive status and the factors contributing to this difference require further study. For example, after including abiotic variables influencing development such as temperature and photoperiod (critical diapause cue), reproduction occurred earlier in OR and for an extended period in NJ. This data describe a method to investigate insect seasonality by incorporating physiological development across multiple regions that can clarify phenology for insects with overlapping generations.  相似文献

Jumping spiders in the genus Habronattus use complex multimodal signals during courtship displays. In the present study, we describe multimodal displays from the Habronattus coecatus clade, comprising a diverse group of 23 described species. Habronattus coecatus group displays are made up of sex‐specific ornamentation and temporally coordinated combinations of motion displays and vibratory songs. Vibratory songs are complex, consisting of up to 20 elements organized in functional groupings (motifs) that change as courtship progresses. This temporal structuring of displays is analogous to a musical composition. Vibratory elements are associated with movement displays involving coloured and patterned ornaments on the male body. We describe general patterns of multimodal displays for 11 species including one, Habronattus borealis, which appears to have lost complex display behaviour. Habronattus coecatus group courtship is one of the most complex communication systems yet described in arthropods and this group may reveal important factors driving the evolution of complex signals. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 522–547.  相似文献

To improve our understanding of adult Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) overwintering biology and to better inform models of its population dynamics, its temporal pattern of spring emergence was investigated using experimental overwintering shelters in screened cages within protective structures. In 2012, plastic shelters containing 100 adults were deployed in unheated, unlighted buildings, and adjacent woodlots in Virginia, USA. In 2013 and 2014, wooden shelters containing 300 paint‐marked adults were deployed in pairs in six woodlots across Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland, USA; one in a closed cage and one in a cage with the top removed, enabling emerged adults to be counted or to disperse, respectively. In 2013 and 2014, pheromone‐baited and non‐baited pyramid traps encircled the shelters at each site. Regular counts of adults that emerged into the closed cage and of marked and ‘wild’ (unmarked) adults captured in traps were conducted from February or March through early July. In 2012, emergence patterns from shelters in buildings and woodlots were very similar and matched those recorded from woodlots in 2013 and 2014. In all years, a small peak of emergence occurred in about mid‐April, a larger and more prolonged peak was observed between mid‐May and early June, and emergence ended by early July. Of the 449 H. halys adults captured in traps between 2013 and 2014, only three were marked individuals from shelters in the open cage, suggesting that adults emerging from overwintering sites may require a dispersal flight before responding to pheromone‐baited traps. In 2013 and 2014, respectively, 98 and 93% of captures were in pheromone‐baited traps, but there was no correlation between the weekly number of adults that emerged from shelters in the closed cages and captures in traps.  相似文献

In a previous study, we found that soybean fields could be supplemented with refrigerated eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) to enhance parasitism. As a part of a study to evaluate the effect of host egg refrigeration on parasitism, host acceptance behavior and interspecific larval competition between Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were studied in multiparasitized unrefrigerated and refrigerated eggs. O. nezarae showed complete host acceptance behavior when offered refrigerated host eggs that were preparasitized by G. japonicum. Adult emergence rate of O. nezarae was 43 and 74% when the interval between the first and second oviposition was 0 and 4 days, respectively, and was not different between refrigerated and unrefrigerated eggs. Refrigeration did not change host acceptance behavior of G. japonicum, but adult emergence declined from 80% in unrefrigerated eggs to 37% in refrigerated eggs that were pre-parasitized by O. nezarae on the same day. No negative effects of refrigeration on sex ratio, adult longevity, and adult size of the both parasitoids were found. Generally host egg refrigeration did not negatively affect host acceptance behavior of the both parasitoids on preparasitized eggs or larval competition between the two parasitoids in multiparasitized host eggs with exceptions in the development time and emergence rate of G. japonicum. Therefore, host egg refrigeration may not interrupt interactions between the parasitoid populations in the field.  相似文献

  1. The invasive brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys (Stål) is a serious nuisance pest in buildings.

To address how H. halys select potential overwintering sites and to predict the risk of home invasion, citizen scientists, primarily from the Mid‐Atlantic region of the U.S.A., were recruited to count the number of H. halys present on the exterior of their homes during the autumn dispersal periods in 2013 and 2014.
  3. Volunteers provided daily count data on numbers present on each exterior aspect of the home during the peak dispersal, as well as their home's location, colour and structural material.
  4. Among volunteers, fewer adults were counted on white homes compared with brown and tan homes in 2013 and with grey homes in both years. Across all homes, greatest numbers were counted on the north and east walls in both years and on homes with wood, cement or stone exteriors.
  5. In addition, significantly more adults were counted on homes in rural landscapes compared with urban areas in both years. Halyomorpha halys were found in greater numbers on darker coloured homes made of natural materials, even though these were less common than other types in the landscape.
  6. Thus, homes located in rural landscapes with these features could be prone to larger nuisance infestations of overwintering H. halys.

Abstract:  The effect of topical application of neem seed kernel aqueous suspension (NSKAS) and neem seed kernel hexane extract (NSKHE) on 2-day-old fourth instar nymphs of Nezara viridula (L.) was studied under laboratory conditions. The applications resulted in loosening of the proboscis, along with separation and deformation of mouthparts, predominantly in the stylets in fifth instar nymphs, adults and in inter-stadial moults. This rendered the insects incapable of feeding and led them to death. Application of NSKAS at 2.5% concentration led to 100% mortality, of which 40% was due to mouthpart deformities. Application of NSKHE at 2.5% concentration led to only 70% mortality, of which 3.33% was due to mouthpart deformities. At 5% concentration, mortality was again 100% for NSKAS and reached close to 100% for the NSKHE application. Dose-dependent mortality was observed for both the applications. However, dose-dependent mouthpart deformities were observed only for NSKAS, the highest being 60% at the 5% concentration. Moreover, for both the applications, more than 50% of the total mortality was observed up to the fifth instar at almost all the concentrations. The LC50 values for NSKAS and NSKHE applications, for mortality up to the fifth instar were 0.36% and 5.22%, and for mortality to the adult stage (10 days old) they were 0.23% and 1.32% respectively. The percentage of bugs showing mouthpart deformities and toxicity was higher for NSKAS than NSKHE, and indicated that NSKAS was more potent than NSKHE.  相似文献
