Homeostasis of trace elements can be disrupted by diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, disturbance in trace element status in diabetes mellitus may contribute to the insulin resistance and development of diabetic complications. The aim of present study was to compare the concentration of essential trace elements, zinc, copper, iron, and chromium in serum of patients who have type 2 diabetes mellitus (n = 20) with those of nondiabetic control subjects (n = 20). The serum concentrations of zinc, copper, iron, and chromium were measured by means of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Shimadzu AA 670, Kyoto, Japan) after acid digestion. The results of this study showed that the mean values of zinc, copper, and chromium were significantly lower in the serum of patients with diabetes as compared to the control subjects (P < 0.05). Our results show that deficiency of some essential trace elements may play a role in the development of diabetes mellitus.  相似文献

A number of essential trace elements play a major role in various metabolic pathways. Selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) are essential trace elements that have been studied in many diseases, including autoimmune, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. However, the findings of previous research on the status of trace elements in patients with schizophrenia have been controversial. We studied these elements in patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia and compared them with sex- and age-matched healthy controls. Plasma Cu concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.01) and Mn and Fe concentrations were lower (p<0.05 and p<0.05, respectively) in schizophrenic patients than in controls. Se and Zn concentrations and protein levels did not differ between patients and healthy controls. These observations suggest that alterations in essential trace elements Mn, Cu, and Fe may play a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. However, findings from trace element levels in schizophrenia show a variety of results that are difficult to interpret.  相似文献

The role of trace elements in the pathogenesis of liver cirrhosis and its complications is still not clearly understood. Serum concentrations of zinc, copper, manganese and magnesium were determined in 105 patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis and 50 healthy subjects by means of plasma sequential spectrophotometer. Serum concentrations of zinc were significantly lower (median 0.82 vs. 11.22 micromol/L, p < 0.001) in patients with liver cirrhosis in comparison to controls. Serum concentrations of copper were significantly higher in patients with liver cirrhosis (median 21.56 vs. 13.09 micromol/L, p < 0.001) as well as manganese (2.50 vs. 0.02 micromol/L, p < 0.001). The concentration of magnesium was not significantly different between patients with liver cirrhosis and controls (0.94 vs. 0.88 mmol/L, p = 0.132). There were no differences in the concentrations of zinc, copper, manganese and magnesium between male and female patients with liver cirrhosis. Only manganese concentration was significantly different between Child-Pugh groups (p = 0.036). Zinc concentration was significantly lower in patients with hepatic encephalopathy in comparison to cirrhotic patients without encephalopathy (0.54 vs. 0.96 micromol/L, p = 0.002). The correction of trace elements concentrations might have a beneficial effect on complications and maybe progression of liver cirrhosis. It would be recommendable to provide analysis of trace elements as a routine.  相似文献

Atrial fibrillation is the most frequently encountered arrhythmia following cardiac surgery. Since the essential trace elements zinc, copper, and magnesium are suspected to have an effect on postoperative atrial fibrillation, the concentrations of these elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the plasma of 60 patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting. Blood samples were collected every 30 min during cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperatively. Plasma concentrations of copper, zinc, and magnesium were measured with flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. All patients were monitored by continuous electrocardiography until they became outpatients or immediately after atrial fibrillation had taken place. Atrial fibrillation occurred in 13 of the 60 patients, corresponding to 21.7%. The zinc and copper concentrations at postoperative days 1 and 3 were significantly different (P < 0.05) between patients with and without atrial fibrillation. The concentrations of zinc following cardiopulmonary bypass recovered more slowly in patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation than in patients without it. Whether or not supplemental zinc could lower the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation should be evaluated in future prospective randomized clinical trials.  相似文献

Pituitary dwarfism (hGHD) is known to be associated with trace element deficiency, which causes improper functioning of the involved endocrine system. Previously, we reported on the head hair concentrations of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron from a total of 418 normal subjects (154 male and 264 female). In this report, we analyzed the head hair concentrations of the same four trace metals of 103 hGHD children (60 male and 43 female) under treatment with human growth hormone (hGH). These subjects ranged in age from 5 to 18 yr. The results were compared with 338 agematched normal subjects (120 male and 218 female). Both male and female hGHD showed approx 1.7 times higher zinc concentrations than normal subjects. Cheruvanky et al. reported a similar trend but with a slightly lower difference between hGHD and normal subjects. The average copper content in the hair of both male and female subjects also showed higher values for the hGHD than for the normal subjects, a trend similar to the values reported by Teraoka et al. In the case of manganese, the concentrations in hair of the hGHD were approx 50% of the values in the normal subjects. Head hair concentrations of iron in the hGHD were commensurate with the normal subjects. Because the content of trace elements in hair varies with the age of subjects, as a control, we investigated the head hair concentration of zinc from 20 healthy girls ranging in age from 10 to 18 yr. The average zinc concentration decreased from 10 to 12 yr, but no clear relation to age was observed from 13 yr and older. These trends were similar to our previous report. The zinc concentration in hair and body weight gain over a year was negatively correlated. The age variation in the content of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron in hair was measured comparing hGHD with the normal subjects in various ages. Concerning the zinc-level variation of hGHD and normal subjects, there were conspicuous differences between hGHD and normal subjects. For copper, the variations in concentration with age were similar to zinc. Regarding the age variations for manganese, hGHD had lower concentrations in hair compared to the normal subjects throughout adolescence (11–18 yr). We have studied the effects between the hair and these trace element concentrations in hGHD before and after hGH administration. These results suggest that hGH affects the metabolism of these trace elements.  相似文献

The level of trace elements such as Zn, Cu and Fe in testicular tissue is an indication of the condition of the tissue as these elements take over important tasks. Zinc and copper are the prosthetic groups of several metalloenzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) which is an important antioxidant enzyme in the cellular protection from reactive oxygen species. If concentrations of these trace elements decrease significantly, SOD cannot detoxify harmful oxygen species. In this study, adult male rats (wistar-albino) were exposed to formaldehyde at different periods (subacute and subchronic) and concentrations (0; 12.2; 24.4 mg.L-1). Body and testis weights were recorded and compared with control groups. The metals described above were determined in rat testicular tissue by atomic absorption spectrometry by using wet ashing. We conclude that subacute or subchronic exposure to formaldehyde have caused growth retardation and altered levels of trace elements, including copper, zinc and iron, in testicular tissue, and may induce further oxidative damage on testicular tissue leading to spermatozoal abnormalities.  相似文献

Ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is a classical surgery for ulcerative colitis patients. However, knowledge on trace element alteration in patients who had undergone this surgery is limited. This study was conducted to assess trace element alteration in patients with ulcerative colitis before and after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. Preoperative (40) and postoperative (35) ulcerative colitis patients were studied. The dietary assessment of trace element intake was undertaken by a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Patients' trace element status of zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, calcium, iron, and vitamin D3 was assessed by measuring their blood concentrations. We found that with the similar dietary intake, there was no statistical difference in the concentrations of plasma copper, iron, calcium, and vitamin D3 in the two groups (P?>?0.05). Compared with preoperative patients, postoperative patients had higher concentrations of plasma zinc (14.51?±?4.75 μmol/l) and manganese (0.21?±?0.11 μmol/l) and lower concentrations of plasma selenium (0.86?±?0.58 μmol/l). Both preoperative and postoperative mean concentrations of plasma calcium and vitamin D3 were below their reference range, respectively. We conclude that IPAA does not seem to alter patients' abnormal trace elements completely. It is important to monitor and supply some specified trace elements even in postoperative patients.  相似文献

Viral hepatic diseases, especially those induced by the hepatitis B virus, can progress into more serious pathological outcomes and eventually to hepatocellular carcinoma. A growing body of evidence indicates that many trace elements play important roles in a number of carcinogenic processes that proceed through various mechanisms. To examine the status of trace elements during the development of hepatic carcinoma, we determined the selenium, iron, copper, and zinc levels and copper-to-zinc ratios in the serum of patients at different stages of viral hepatic disease. We observed significant changes in the selenium, iron copper, and zinc levels in the serum of patients having hepatocellular carcinoma, relative to those of healthy controls (p<0.05). The mean serum copper level in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma was significantly higher than that of the control group. In contrast, the mean selenium, iron, and zinc levels in patients having hepatocellular carcinoma were significantly lower than those of the control group. In addition, the mean zinc level in the serum of patients with hepatic cirrhosis was significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05). Moreover, we found markedly elevated Cu: Zn ratios (p<0.05) in patients having hepatic cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. Our findings imply that the levels of some trace elements, such as selenium, iron, copper, and zinc, and Cu:Zn ratios, might serve as biomarkers for the increased severity of viral hepatic damage.  相似文献

Summary We report data showing changes during the growing season in the concentrations of manganese, zinc and copper in the rhizosphere in soil solutions of barley plants. Substantial mobilisation of these trace elements occurred during the early stages of rhizosphere development so that soil solution concentrations increased three fold for the copper and zinc and fifteen fold for manganese.  相似文献

In this study, a number of selected trace elements and clinically relevant parameters were compared between thoracic empyemata and the corresponding sera for a better understanding of the trace element distribution between these two compartments. Serum-empyema pairs were obtained from 13 patients and quantified for selected and essential trace elements, namely copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), rubidium (Rb), and magnesium (Mg), by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, the concentrations of the following clinical laboratory parameters were analyzed by standard methods: total protein, leukocyte count, lactate dehydrogenase, glucose, pH, and the C-reactive protein. Individual concentrations of the elements determined in the empyemata were frequently higher than in pleural effusions of any other benign or malignant condition except for Cu. Serum Cu exceeded the normal range (600–1400 μg/kg) in 6 out of 13 patients (median 1410 μg/kg). In the empyemata, Zn concentrations (median 2000 μg/kg) were characteristically higher than in the sera (median 450 μg/kg) and exceeded the upper limit for serum (1200 μg/kg) in 8 of the 13 patients. Manganese concentrations in the empyemata (median 2.7 μg/kg) were also higher compared to corresponding sera, although they stayed within the limits considered normal for serum of healthy adults (upper limit 2.9 μg/kg). Rubidium was also moderately higher in most empyemata (median 290 μg/kg) and exceeded the upper limit for serum (560 μg/kg) in two patients. The median concentration of the essential element magnesium was higher in the empyemata (23 mg/kg) than in the sera (21 mg/kg). However, all serum Mg concentrations except three remained within the normal range (17–22 mg/kg). Removal of large amounts of empyematous fluid may deprive the body of trace elements and can cause suboptimal or deficient trace element status and homeostasis. Recuperation will be accelerated by compensatory supplementation of trace elements. Therefore, selective medication with adequate trace element compounds in patients with thoracic empyema can be generally recommended for zinc. The other elements need not necessarily be monitored or substituted, because of their stable concentrations in the serum. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was employed in an evaluation of zinc, copper and iron as trace elements in serum and erythrocytes from 56 children with protein-calorie malnutrition at different stages (early kwashiorkor, kwashiorkor and marasma). Iron and zinc concentrations showed a decreasing pattern through the various stages of the P.C.M. Significant changes are present in zinc values. Importance of iodine and selenium in thyroid metabolism is well known, but the roles of other essential trace elements including copper, zinc, manganese and iron on thyroid hormone homeostasis remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the status of those trace elements in benign thyroid diseases and evaluate possible links between trace element concentrations and thyroid hormones.The study group was composed of 25 patients with multinodular goiter. Concentrations of thyroid hormones (plasma-free thyroxine, FT4; free triiodothyronine, FT3; and thyrotropin, TSH), selenium, copper, zinc, manganese and iron in plasma, and urinary iodine were determined. The results were compared with those of a healthy control group (n=20) with no thyroid disorder.A mild iodine deficiency was observed in the patients with multinodular goiter whereas urinary iodine levels were in the range of “normal” values in healthy controls. All patients were euthyroid, and their thyroid hormone concentrations were not significantly different from the control group. Plasma selenium, zinc and iron concentrations did not differ from controls, while copper and manganese levels were found to be significantly higher in the patients with multinodular goiter indicating links between these trace elements and thyroid function and possibly in development of goiter. Besides iodine, there was a significant correlation between plasma copper concentration and FT3/FT4 ratio.  相似文献

Significantly more information about trace element status can be obtained by investigating concentrations in blood cells instead of only evaluating the concentrations in plasma. This can be explained by the fact that essential trace elements such as zinc, copper, chromium and selenium take part in a variety of enzymatic processes on a molecular cellular level. Ignoring these important biochemical roles, trace element concentrations determined in whole blood or plasma very often lead to conclusions contrary to the actual intracellular concentration. Especially in metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus, conclusions drawn from trace element concentrations in blood cells usually offer more valuable clinical information about the metabolic state than trace element concentrations in plasma or whole blood. In the present investigation copper and zinc concentrations were increased in all blood fractions of diabetic patients (IDDM). In insulin-dependent diabetic children significantly higher values of zinc in erythrocytes were also found, and they were higher in patients with poor metabolic control (HbA1c>9%). When different blood fractions in diabetic patients (NIDDM) were compared with a control group, chromium was significantly increased in plasma and polymorphonuclear cells. Patients with IDDM had pronounced decreased selenium concentrations in erythrocytes as compared to controls.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the status of serum trace elements: zinc, copper, manganese, iron, calcium, and magnesium concentrations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. Forty-eight obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and 48 healthy volunteers were included in this study. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for zinc, copper, iron, calcium, and magnesium) as well as graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (for manganese). Data were analyzed using independent t test, Pearson's correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. Statistical analysis of these data showed a definite pattern of variation among certain elements in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder compared to controls. In patients' serum, zinc, iron, and magnesium concentrations decreased significantly (p<0.05) compared to the controls. Serum manganese and calcium concentrations were significantly higher (p<0.05) in patients compared to the controls. These data showed a definite imbalance in the interelement relations in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients compared to controls and therefore suggest a disturbance in the element homeostasis.  相似文献

To clarify trace element distribution in red and white muscle, and to verify two populations of muscle mitochondria, the iron, zinc, copper, and manganese concentrations of whole muscle and their subcellular fractions were determined. The iron, zinc, copper, and manganese concentrations of red muscle were 1.83, 4.31, 2.05, and 1.67 times higher than those of white muscle, respectively. In skeletal muscle subcellular distribution or iron, zinc, and copper were entirely different and that of manganese was relatively similar as compared with those in liver reported previously. The pattern of mineral distribution in all fractions of red muscle was similar to that of white muscle, but their concentrations in some fractions were different between red and white muscle, e.g., iron, zinc, and manganese in supernatant fraction and copper in nuclear and microsomal fractions. The difference between subsarcolemmal and interfibrillar mitochondria were ascertained by the distribution of trace elements.  相似文献

Preeclampsia complicates 2–8 % of all pregnancies and it is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and pre-term delivery in the world. Unfortunately, there is scarcity of document discussing the circulating level of several essential trace elements in preeclampsia patients in Bangladesh. The present study was designed to evaluate the serum concentration of four trace elements, namely zinc, copper, manganese, and iron, in preeclamptic pregnant women. The study was conducted as a case–control study with 50 preeclamptic pregnant women as cases and 58 normotensive pregnant women as controls. Obstetric, anthropometric, and clinical data were collected at routine obstetric visits. Serum trace elements were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Independent sample t test and Pearson’s correlation test were done for the statistical analysis using the statistical software package SPSS, version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). We observed significant differences for gestational age, body mass index, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure between patient and control groups (p?<?0.05). Analysis of serum trace elements explored significantly lower level of all the four elements in preeclampsia patients in comparison to the control group (p?<?0.05). Pearson’s correlation analysis explored that the correlation between serum level of different trace elements was statistically insignificant (p?>?0.05) except the correlation between zinc and iron in preeclampsia patients (p?<?0.05). Establishment of inter-element relationship strongly supports that there was a disturbance in the element homeostasis in patient with preeclampsia. In conclusion, our study suggests that preeclampsia patients have considerably lower level of serum zinc, copper, manganese, and iron compared to the healthy pregnant women.  相似文献

The relationship of minerals and trace elements with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is complex. Alterations in their metabolism can be induced by the diseases and their complications. To study the role of trace elements in IBD patients’ serum zinc and copper and their related enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), activity were measured in patients with IBD patients as well as in healthy subjects. In addition, the correlation between serum trace element levels, albumin, total protein, urea level, copper/zinc ratio, and disease activity (DA) was determined in these subjects. Serum samples were obtained from 35 patients (19 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 16 Crohn’s disease (CD)) in the active phase of the disease and 30 healthy control subjects. Serum levels of zinc, copper, SOD activity, albumin, total protein, and urea were measured. The results were compared between the two groups using independent Student’s t test in statistical analysis. Serum levels of zinc, SOD activity, albumin, and total protein were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in patients than controls, while serum urea level was significantly higher in patients compared to controls. Copper concentrations did not differ between patients with IBD (mean ± SD, 58.8 ± 20.7 μg/d) and controls (55.57 ± 12.6 μg/d). Decreased levels of zinc and SOD activity are associated with increased inflammatory processes indicating inappropriate antioxidant system in patients with IBD. Additionally, lower levels of albumin and total protein with higher level of urea reflect metabolic problems in liver system.  相似文献

Trace elements may contribute to myocardial dysfunction and susceptibility of the phospholipid cell membrane to free-radical damage and oxidative changes. We studied the concentration of trace elements copper, zinc, and magnesium in cardiac surgery. Fifty-four consecutive patients for elective coronary artery bypass grafting (n?=?30) and valve replacement (n?=?24) were studied. Blood samples were collected every 30 min (T1–T5) during cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperatively (T6–T9). Plasma concentrations of copper, zinc, and magnesium were measured with flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentrations of copper, zinc, and magnesium were significantly different during and after cardiopulmonary bypass (p?<?0.01). The zinc concentration at T7 and T8 (p?<?0.01) and the copper concentration at T1, T9 (p?<?0.05) were significantly different between two groups. However, the magnesium concentration had no significant differences between the two groups (p?>?0.05). In patients undergoing valve replacement or coronary artery bypass grafting, the concentrations of copper and zinc decreased significantly during cardiopulmonary bypass. Our study suggests that the current cardiopulmonary bypass protocol is adequate in the maintenance of c magnesium. However, the low copper and zinc concentrations found in the present study may suggest that in the future, supplementation particularly of copper and zinc may become a necessary procedure in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.  相似文献

It is known that cisplatin induces the excretion of zinc from the urine and thereby reduces its serum concentration. However, the fluctuation of these trace elements during or after cisplatin-based chemotherapy has not been evaluated. To answer this question, we performed a clinical study in esophageal cancer patients undergoing cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Eighteen patients with esophageal cancer who were not able to swallow food or water orally due to complete stenosis of the esophagus were evaluated. The patients were divided into a control group [total parenteral nutrition (TPN) alone for 28?days, ten cases] and an intervention group (TPN with additional trace elements for 28?days, eight cases). The serum concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, manganese, triiodothyronin (T3), and thyroxin (T4), as alternative indicators of iodine, were measured on days?0, 14, and 28 of treatment, and statistically analyzed on day?28. In the control group, the serum concentration of copper was significantly decreased from 135.4 (day?0) to 122.1???g/ml (day?14), and finally to 110.6???g/ml (day?28, p?=?0.015). The concentration of manganese was also significantly decreased from 1.34 (day?0) to 1.17???g/ml (day?14) and finally to 1.20 (day?28, p?=?0.049). The levels of zinc, iron, T3, and T4 were not significantly changed. In the intervention group, the supplementation with trace elements successfully prevented these decreases in their concentrations. TPN with supplementary trace elements is preferable and recommended for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy in order to maintain the patients?? nutrient homeostasis.  相似文献

BackgroundAberrations in endothelial cells, immune and oxidative pathways are associated with atherosclerosis (ATS) and unstable angina (UA). The role of trace elements, minerals, and the endogenous opioid system (EOS) in UA are less well established.MethodsWe measured lipid, insulin resistance (IR), and immune, trace element (copper and zinc), mineral (magnesium, calcium), EOS (β-endorphin and mu-opioid receptor (MOR)) and antioxidant (vitamin D3) biomarkers in patients with ATS (n = 60) and UA (n = 60) and healthy controls (n = 58).ResultsATS patients showed increased atherogenic and IR indices, IL-6, IL-10, β-endorphin, copper and magnesium, and lower zinc than healthy controls. Logistic regression showed that UA was significantly discriminated from ATS without UA with an accuracy of 85.5 % using calcium, IL-10, β-endorphin, MOR, triglycerides, IR (all positively), and copper and vitamin D3 (inversely). Neural networks showed that UA was discriminated from ATS without UA with an area under the ROC curve of 0.942 using MOR, β-endorphin, calcium, insulin resistance, vitamin D3 and copper as input variables. We found that 50.0 % of the variance in IR was explained by the regression on copper, IL-10, IL-6 (all positively), and zinc (inversely), while 32.9 % of the variance in the atherogenic index of plasma was explained by copper, IL-10 (both positively), and magnesium (inversely).ConclusionUA is not only mediated by insulin resistance, atherogenicity, and immune disorders, but also by aberrations in the endogenous opioid system and trace elements as well as lowered antioxidant levels.
